A. Cook K.A. Grace's article advocates usage of the terms describing resources as defined by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Originally recommended in 1943, the terms were revised in 1976 and again in 1980. Mr. Grace further recommends that the term reserves should be severely restricted and that it should encompass mining and processing factors. The list of references quoted in the article does not, however, mention the study concerning reserves that was made over a period of almost four years by a joint Committee on Definitions. This committee was sponsored by three societies - the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Most of the detailed work was done by a working party appointed by the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. After studying previous definitions in the US as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and other European countries, the following definitions were proposed and accepted in 1974 by the SME board of directors. (Ore reserve definitions in Rhodesia, South Africa, or New Zealand were not mentioned as having been reviewed. Table 1 lists definitions from MINING ENGINEERING, July 1975. Notice in Table 1 it was mentioned, under Resources, that the definitions of reserves were recommended for the purposes of commercial evaluation. It was further stated that the terminology adopted by the USBM and the USGS, as released to the public, covering resources, was recognized as such. Mr. Grace also recommends that reserve calculations should allow for future losses in ore tonnage, ore grade, milling, and smelting. Unfortunately, it might take years to develop a prospect after it has been discovered. Mining methods have to be tested before being finalized in order to know what tonnage of ore is going to be lost, or how much dilution is likely to occur. The same problems are present in concentrating or in smelting. Operating mines usually know how mined grade compares with ore reserve grade. They can usually predict fairly closely what their final metal recoveries are probably going to be. It is, however, expecting too much to have to delay quoting reserves from say a recently drilled prospect. Any responsible mining geologist or mining engineer (or company for that matter) should state several things about an ore reserve calculation: that it is or is not a preliminary estimate only; that estimated grades have not been diluted to allow for a future, as yet unknown, mining method; that metal recoveries are or are not only tentative, based perhaps on drill hole samples only or on no metallurgical testing at all. [ ] Reserves of a partially explored prospect are always quoted when it becomes necessary to raise capital. If they are described as preliminary only (really just tonnage and grade estimates and not true "reserves") in addition to being accompanied by some of the items just mentioned, nobody is going to be misled. If, on the other hand, a report by a member of the SME or SEG is intentionally misleading, the individual must be reported and eventually disbarred from his or her society. To summarize, let us stay with the definitions of ore, ore reserves, and related terms as recommended and accepted by SME. I might add that on occasion I have used a fourth category in my ore reserve calculations, namely Geologically Possible Ore. This category is more or less the same as Inferred ore defined by the USBM and USGS. I have never given a grade to this category, which may be based only on geological mapping, geochemical sampling, or geophysical traversing. ?

The rapid increase in the amount of steel produced by the basic open-hearth process is an index of its ability to produce high-grade steel from raw materials of the most, varied physical character and chemical analysis. This inherent adaptability of the process has resulted in a lack of care in the selection of raw materials, so that in far too many cases charges are used of a chemical and physical character not justified by local economic conditions. A practice, or series of practices, should be used that will result in the greatest economy for the plant as a whole; therefore, the operations of blast furnace and open hearth must be considered together. In this paper, an effort has been made to show those variations in both open-hearth practice and cost that follow changes in the analysis of the pig iron arid it may be said that the theoretical costs shown are worthy of careful study and consideration. Carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur constitute the principal metalloids in basic pig iron and play the leading role in the production of steel by the basic open-hearth process. The percentages of each of these metalloids, with the exception of carbon, is a variable that has its genesis in the economic relation of the blast-furnace plant to its ore and fuel supplies. As the amount of carbon in the iron is a saturation function of the temperature at which it is produced, the variation in the amount carried is, for any given locality and grade of iron, practically negligible and is so considered in the eight heats discussed in this paper. The melting and refining reactions in an open-hearth furnace, either acid or basic, are essentially oxidizing and vary greatly with the type and age of the furnace, as well as the character of the fuel employed. This paper is a review of recoverable reserves of bituminous coal in the Southern Appalachian area, according to the latest published estimates. A few comparisons are made, some apparent trends are discussed, and some comments are made regarding the limitations of present estimates. The definition of Southern Appalachian area used in this report is somewhat arbitrary. It includes all the bituminous coal deposits of Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. All of West Virginia has been excluded. The East Kentucky and Virginia counties included were selected in connection with a literature study the writer made in 1959 of possible coal supply areas for the Tennessee Valley Authority. The selected counties were considered to be the only ones from which TVA might expect to obtain coal. The availability of coal from some of these counties is doubtful, but no other East Kentucky counties were considered more than remote possibilities. With these limitations, the Appalachian area covered is that from which producers of electric power and steel and commercial coal users, located in the Southeastern U. S., may expect to obtain their supplies of coal. Of course, it is recognized that coal from the eastern interior fields is also available to many of these same organizations. RANK AND QUALITY OF THE COALS Practically all the coals in the Southern Appalachian region are of high volatile A bituminous rank. An occasional sample indicates a slightly lower rank, but such samples may be oxidized or otherwise not representative. Some thin beds in Lookout Mountain and Sand Mountain in Alabama and Georgia, are low volatile bituminous coals, but they have not been mined extensively in modern times. There is a possibility that some of the deeper beds along the southeastern edge of the Warrior field of Alabama are near the Low-medium volatile bituminous dividing line. The Sewanee bed and some other minor ones of the Southern Tennessee field, some of the lower beds in Virginia, many beds in Sand and Lookout Mountains in Georgia and Alabama, one or more beds in the Coosa field, possibly some lower beds in the Cahaba field, and most of the beds along the southeastern edge of the Warrior field and the southern end of the Sequatchie anticline of Alabama, are of medium volatile bituminous rank. The quality of the Southern Appalachian coals is highly variable. Some of them, particularly such prevailingly thin ones as the Black Creek bed of Alabama and the Straight Creek bed of Kentucky, are unusually low in mineral matter— probably the lowest in the U. S. With the exception of certain beds and local areas, Alabama and East Kentucky coals probably have as low average ash and sulfur content as can be found in any sizeable coal area in the country. The sulfur content of Southern Appalachian coals is also variable, but few beds are consistently high in sulfur. In Alabama, sulfur generally increases from southeast to northwest across the Warrior field, but this trend is not quite as clear in the other states. A few beds in Northern Tennessee are prevailingly high in sulfur. All Southern Appalachian coals are potential coking coals if they can be prepared to meet chemical requirements. Only a comparatively small part of the medium volatile A bituminous coal, but most of the medium volatile bituminous coal mined is actually used for coking purposes. An estimate of reserves of coking coal under the requirements of present practice, could be compiled comparatively easily, but this probably has never been done. The reserve of coal that can be coked as an ingredient of a suitable blend is probably many times the size of the reserves of coal that will yield suitable blast furnace and foundary coke without blending. WHAT CONSTITUTES ECONOMICALLY RECOVERABLE COAL RESERVES? When one first realizes the vast extent of the coal-bearing rocks in the Southern Appalachian area, (see Fig. 1) the thought is likely to occur that the supply of coal is inexhaustible. T. T. READ, Secretary of the Committee on Industrial Organization, presents the following very interesting monthly ad interim report: Reports from London are to the effect that 750 housing schemes for workers, involving the erection of 128,000 new dwellings, have been submitted to the Local Government Board. Birmingham alone needs 14,000 new houses, and the Housing and Town Planning Committee of the City Council considers that 5000 new houses must be built each year for the next 20 years. Nine hundred acres of land has been acquired, on which to build 10 to 12 houses per acre for the next two years. The town of Dudley, which built 300 modern dwellings in 1915-1916, submitted schemes for another 500 houses. There is a shortage of building materials required, specially brick. Financial assistance has been received for reopening brick yards that were closed during the war. W. E. Dickson, vice president of the Midvale Steel & Ordnance Co., is reported in the daily press as stating that his corporation is planning to spend $8,000,000 in improving its plant and assisting its employees in building their own homes. The company will advance 90 per cent. of the cost of the house and extend payments over a period of 12 years. Methods of work employed in building 256 houses at Quincy, Mass., for the workers of the Fore River shipyards are described, by Joseph Meltzer, in the Engineering News Record for May 29, 1919. The approximate cost was about $3500 per house, not including water supply, sewers, streets, and sidewalks. "Comparative Costs of Tenantry and Home-Owning;" "A Plain Talk on Helping Home-builders;" and "More Plain Talk on Home Building" are the titles of three publications of the Information and Education Service of the Department of Labor. These publications should be' of a good deal of service in convincing employees that it is to their interest to own their homes rather than to live in rented houses. The same Service has issued pamphlets discussing the cost of materials.

Before Capitol Hill hearings, primary metal producers are often called "concentrated industries" because there are relatively few companies in each category and most of them are large corporations. Capitol Hill still looks on large companies as inherently wrong, but there are about as many arguments one way as the other. Encourage Imports? Now comes Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Richard W. McLaren to say that imports of metals and other basic materials should be encouraged to create competition for the concentrated industries here at home. Cloakroom analysts are wondering how this ties in with President Nixon's cabinet task force studying the copper price structure. This is chaired by Dr. Hendrik Houthakker, a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisers who has also indicated that the use of imports to pull down prices may be one way to create less inflation.

Three basic questions must be answered by an engineer performing an economic analysis of a mineral property: (1) How much can the company afford to pay for the property; (2) At what rate should the property be mined; (3) What will be the return on the investment. These questions often defy reasonable analysis, because at the point in time at which they must be answered little may be known about the grade of ore and the reserve tonnage. The purpose of this report is twofold. First, to derive a method of determining purchase price, rate of production and return on investment which is valid under varying conditions of ore grade and tonnage reserve; and, second, to apply this method to the Margay deposit in an attempt to evaluate it as a business enterprise. This is an actual economic analysis of an existing nickel-copper deposit fictitiously named the Margay. It was carried out for a mining corporation and proved to be the determining factor in the subsequent purchase and development of the property. All data referring to costs, quality and quantity of ore, etc., are accurate and truly represented. Prices used are obsolete but the method is not dependent on those variables. Basic assumptions for the analysis are given in Table I, page 71.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. Because of the strict requirements on the quality of limestone that are dictated by the users, the operator was compelled to find new approaches to produce a product of uniform and acceptable quality. The raw material is controlled and monitored every two minutes by a special computer in order to ensure its quality. The required minimum and maximum quality constraint had an adverse effect on performance and consequently cost. In order to improve this performance, a Monte Carlo simulation model was developed and tested for the optimal truck allocation. The input data is based upon the distribution of equipment performances and costs.

The sound made by ball, pebble and rod mills has long been used by the operator as the "telltale" of their operation. The nature of this sound depends upon local conditions and the type of mill used. By experience an operator can tell whether the mill is running properly or not. Some operators are able to detect the difference in sound much better than others and get better results running the same mill under the same conditions. The automatic operation of a mill using sound as the fundamental means for maintaining control presents many problems. The satisfactory solution of these problems requires, for given operating conditions, a greater average output, with improved product for subsequent processing, than can be obtained by manual control. Relation of Sound to Useful Grinding Energy Experience has taught us that there is a difference in character as well as in intensity of sound between a mill grinding wet and one grinding dry, in open or closed circuit, to obtain a coarse or fine product, on the same material, to say nothing of the effect with a variety of different materials. Broadly speaking, a wet-grinding mill operates best at a lower sound level than the same mill grinding dry, with other conditions the same. Several reasons for this variation in sound intensity under these conditions can be advanced, but the important point is that there is a difference, based upon practical results. Since these reasons may be more or less involved, and may be subject, to much discussion, only one will be considered here. It is apparent that two balls hitting together or a ball striking the lining, if there is no intervening material, will produce the maximum sound. If a complete cushion of material is placed between the balls or ball and liner, so that the energy is dissipated without doing useful work, the balls will be unable to create enough pressure or force to fracture the particles, and the sound will be at a minimum. At some point in between—that is, where there is sufficient material between the balls or ball and liner so that the ball will fracture the particles without mashing them unduly—the sound

IN applied mechanics and in metallurgy the transition from elastic to inelastic action is a matter of considerable interest and importance. Often the first inelastic deformation is apparently quite homogeneous; that is, uniformly distributed throughout the specimen. Sometimes this deformation is heterogeneous; that is, localized; inelastic deformation proceeds to some definite amount in restricted regions before adjacent regions of the specimen are inclastically deformed. In such cases the deformation does not become homogeneous until the whole specimen has been deformed the amount corresponding to that for each localized deformation. If the test is stopped before uniform extension sets in, the heterogeneous character of the deformation is apparent on the surface of the specimen through characteristic markings, which have been called "Lüders"' lines, "Hartmann's" lines, the "Piobert effect," or simply "flow figures." These markings are the source of considerable trouble in fabricating operations, particularly in the deep drawing of steel sheet. In many cases where the transition is of this nature, the stress developed at the upper limit of the elastic range is greater than the stress during the period of heterogeneous deformation, giving rise to the familiar "drop of the beam" effect in testing. The amount of the yield-point elongation, as well as the value of the stress at the lower yield point (the value to which the stress drops when yielding begins), are functions of the tempera-ture and the testing speed. Lower temperatures and faster rates of testing increase both the yield-point elongation and the yield-point stress. These matters have been ably discussed in a recent paper by Winlock and Leiter1 though, as brought out by the discussion of that paper, the phenomena are but little understood. The purpose of the present paper is to clarify the problem through the application of a simple principle, and to show that, through the application of this principle, a number of phenomena in the plastic deformation of metals become more read-ily understood.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES), under sponsorship of the Defense Atomic Support Agency, has recently developed a unique dynamic high-pressure triaxial testing device (DHT). The device permits acquisition of both axial and lateral deformation data while undisturbed soil and/or rock specimens are subjected to various states of controlled impulsive-type stresses produced by varying both the axial stress and the radial stress rapidly with time. The device is used to develop controlled dynamic pressure pulses within the triaxial chamber fluid on soil or rock test specimens to 3 inches in diameter. Controlled dynamic axial pulse loads are delivered to the specimen by a piston driven by an existing pneumatic ram loader (SECO). The DHT consists of a triaxial cell and a pressure supply and decay system which permits the chamber pressure to be varied with time. Together the DHT and SECO operate in a testing program so as to provide time varying confining pressures and axial loads to test specimens at independently controlled but synchronized programmed rise, hold, and decay times. Rise time is defined as the time from zero load or pressure to peak load or pressure; hold time is the time of constant peak load or pressure; and the decay time is the time from peak load or pressure to zero load or pressure. The maximum dynamic confining pressure attainable is approximately 15,000 psi and the fastest rise and decay times are 3 millisecond (msec) and 20 msec, respectively. This paper presents a description of the DHT, the necessary support equipment, and details of the measurement system. Performance evaluation tests conducted on clay siltstone and a Cretaceous sandstone are presented since the results demonstrate some of the capabilities of the device and show some of its characteristics.

MANY papers and reports have been devoted to the geology and ore deposits of the Ducktown district, Tennessee, especially the complete report by W. H. Emmons and F. B. Laney, published as Professional Paper 139, by the U. S. Geological Survey. The present paper discusses the work of the geological organization of the Tennessee Copper Co., which is based on the field work of the above paper and the consulting work of W. H. Emmons. The Ducktown basin lies in the southeastern corner of Tennessee and extends a short distance into Georgia and North Carolina. All productive mines are contained in an area of 15 sq. mi. in the center of this basin, which is an undulating plateau at an elevation of 1650 to 1800 ft. above sea level. It is surrounded by the relatively high mountains of the southern Appalachian region. The rocks are of early Cambrian age. Deposition of the ores probably took place during the latter part of the Paleozoic era. The ore deposits are rudely tabular to lens-shaped bodies of massive sulfide, varying from a few feet to over 200 ft. in width. In general they all strike northeast and dip southeast at angles from 45° to 70°. Locally, where affected by folding and faulting, the variations in dip may be even greater. The lodes usually are parallel at distances of from one-half to one mile measured normal to the strike. The deposits are a replacement of a fairly continuous bed or a series of disconnected limestone lenses, highly folded and somewhat faulted, which probably represent the same stratigraphic horizon.

A PRESENT, a comprehensive account of the geology and ore deposits of the Robinson mining district, in eastern Nevada, is not warranted. Though several years' work has been done, the district is so large that it will be some time before the investigation nears completion. In this paper I purpose merely to discuss methods of study and the application of geologic data to the search for ore. In the first place, the purpose of a geological depart¬ment in a mining organization is to collect and correlate all geologic and engineering data likely to be useful. In an extensive and well developed mining camp this involves a detailed study of the structure and stratigraphy of the district as a whole, as well as careful analysis of the orebodies exposed. The problem then is to find continuations or similar ore environments in other parts of the district in which like phenomena have been active, and to explore these for new orebodies. Experience gained in other similar mining districts is useful but one must always remember that a great many mining districts are unique and that exploration rules and procedure applying to one cannot always be transferred to another of apparently similar character and be made to work. One also has to be careful in moving from one to another part of the same district. The geologist must first examine the region critically to determine its individual characteristics. .

Jasper County lies just north of the geographical center of Georgia, bounded on the west and north by the Ocmulgee River. The county seat, Monticello, is approximately 65 miles east-southeast of Atlanta and 40 miles north of Macon. It is served by the Macon-Athens branch of the Central of Georgia Railway Co. and by five paved highways converging from adjoining county seats. Farming and lumbering are the principal local occupations. About half the county is covered with pine and mixed hardwoods; a large part of the forested land is owned by the Soil Conservation Service of the Department of Agriculture in its Piedmont Land Utilization Project. The topography is one of gently rolling field and forest with occasional hills rising 100 ft or more above the creek beds. Though annual rainfall is in the neighborhood of 60 in., most of it falls in torrential downpours of short duration which tend rapidly to erode the red soil and convert the country roads to greasy tracks of red mud. History The pegmatites of Jasper County produced a small amount of mica in World War I. In World War 11, our Government's search for this strategic mineral brought to Georgia B. C. Burgess, then Southern Manager of Colonial Mica Corp., subdivision of Metals Reserve Corp., who noted on State Highway 83 the presence of pegmatitic material used as road metal. In 1944, after severing his Government connection and returning to private practice, Mr. Burgess investigated the source of the pegmatitic material noted on his previous visit and discovered that graphic granite pegmatite had been mined for the road metal. He secured mineral leases from the Soil Conservation Service and from private owners and began preliminary development work. By 1946 he had uncovered enough pegmatite to warrant an enterprise to undertake economic development of the feldspar. In March 1947, he conveyed his leases and interest to Appalachian Minerals Co., remaining with it as Vice President and General Manager. This company has carried on additional development, removing overburden by bulldozer and drilling the pegmatites uncovered. A modern and efficient feldspar grinding plant to produce 20 mesh feldspar for the glass industry was completed and placed in operation May 1, 1948. I regard it as one of the most important papers that have been presented on this subject, and worthy of complete study. I started out, on the limited time I had, on a system of study which I would recommend to any one else who has leisure to complete the investigation. I took the original report presented at the Cincinnati meeting, and selected from it' such tests as had the analyses reported along with the physical tests, giving the amounts of carbon, phosphorus, manganese, etc., taking only those in which all these elements are given.

The Robinson mining district in east-central Nevada is itself a century of study in the changing economics of the mining business. It began as a boom and bust area. In the district today, just west of Ely, Nev., the hills are pockmarked with the tunnels and shafts sunk in a frantic scramble for gold and silver before the turn of the century. But as the economics of dwindling reserves, rising costs, and changing markets were stamping out the efforts of the gold and silver seekers, copper took over as the king of the Robinson district. Today, Kennecott Copper Corp. has four open pit mines in the district and is planning a fifth. From these mines, Kennecott produces nearly 40,000 tpy (tons per year) of copper. In its hundred years of history, the district has produced more than $1 billion in mineral values, a richer treasure than that from the more famed Comstock Lode of Virginia City, Nev. Prospectors had reported copper outcroppings in the Robinson district as early as 1872. But the first significant copper orebody was not discovered until 1901. In that year, Dave Bartley and Edwin Gray exposed the top of the porphyry orebody that would become the Ruth mine in a shaft at a depth of 120 ft. Subsequently, other larger orebodies were discovered nearby which have resulted in this area being one of the leading copper producers in the country for some 60 years. Following a period of development and exploration, the Ruth mine started production in 1915 and continued as a prosperous underground mining operation until 1948. The mining industry in Nevada experienced the same increasing cost of labor and supplies that all other mining areas had to contend with, and by 1948 the Ruth mine was no longer profitable. The U. S. Geological Survey has been actively engaged in work on coal for more than 50 years. During this long period we have released more than 300 publications containing information about coal and coal reserves, including details on the thickness, distribution, and quality of coal, and the structure and stratigraphy of the coal-bearing rocks. We have also cooperated with state surveys on many similar publications. For many areas these reports are the only reliable published data on our resources of coal. During the last several years we have substantially increased our activities above the wartime low. We now have field work in progress, or reports in preparation, on 13 detailed mapping projects distributed as follows: 1. Pennsylvania anthracite field 2. Casselrnan Basin, Md. 3. INTRODUCTION The tremendous capital investment required to produce a low grade ore deposit demands a reliable answer to the question: "How much does it cost to drill a well to produce the uranium that geologists have indicated is there in the ground?" However, you will find the answers given will be many and varied, depending on whether they come from the operating company, the drilling contractor, a geologist, a reservoir engineer, purchasing agent, or whoever. Each generally considers only a limited area of the total operation. The operating company usually depends upon the drilling contractors, service companies, and consultants to supply expertise. Because it is often difficult to see the "whole picture" or even to agree upon what the "whole picture" is, planning a well program and its costs is often done piecemeal. Frequently, costs "saved" in one area of the program are needlessly spent in another, because the effect of one area upon the other was overlooked. Since the drilling fluid is such an influential part of the drilling program, it should be given utmost consideration when planning the overall program. As W. D. Lacabanne wrote in 1954: "The drilling fluid system is understandably called the heart of the rotary oil drilling rig. Any other type of rotary rig.... should benefit by the incorporation of mud fluids in the drilling scheme." And G. R. Gray mentions that "The driller recognizes the drilling fluid as one of the useful tools available to solve drilling problems." However, in minerals drilling, only in recent years has the drilling fluid been considered as more than a tool to get through special problem areas. Although there are many similarities between drilling for oil and gas and drilling for minerals, the differences in the drilling equipment used justifies designing specific fluids for the minerals drilling industry. NL Baroid/NL Industries, Inc. has been a leader in introducing such fluids and in providing technical know-how to the minerals drilling industry. The purpose of this paper is: (1) to discuss the selection of drilling fluids to meet specific drilling conditions during both exploration and production and (2) to show the interrelationship among factors present in the exploration and production phases that influence total well costs. DRILLING FLUIDS FOR DRILLING PROBLEMS The drilling fluid is a tool that can be used to improve drilling performance by improving hole cutting, cleaning, stability, and formation productivity. Properly formulated and maintained drilling fluids enable the drilling operation to be carried out with increased efficiency and lower total (overall) costs. However, it should be noted that not all drilling problems can be solved by even the most carefully prepared and maintained drilling fluids. Of the many possible drilling problems encountered in a well before reaching target depth, this paper will discuss only those most likely to be present in the shallow [61 to 610 m (200 to 2000 ft)] drilling operations in South Texas. LOST CIRCULATION Loss of circulation is the most common problem encountered in drilling. Because the losses occur under varied conditions, it is often difficult to determine the exact causes. "Lost circulation" or "lost returns" means the partial or complete loss of drilling fluid to voids in the formation. "Loss of water" while drilling with water may take place into any permeable section and should be distinguished from "water loss" or filtration of fluid through the filter cake of mud solids laid down on a permeable formation. "Loss of water" can frequently be stopped by the addition of colloidal sized clay particles such as high yield bentonites, whereas "water loss" may be controlled with organic polymers. Subsurface conditions that lead to loss of circulation can be classified as: (1) natural fractures, (2) induced fractures, (3) unconsolidated or highly permeable formations (loose gravel), and (4) cavernous formations (crevices and channels). Loss of circulation may occur whenever the borehole pressure exceeds the formation pressure. The greater the differential pressure, the more likely it is that circulation may be lost. To stop loss of whole mud, voids must be bridged so that a filter cake can be laid down on the permeable section. The plugging material must be of the proper size and shape to offer greater resistance to the fluid flow around it than the flow up the annulus. A plugging composition that satisfies these requirements may not be able to be handled by the small rig pump available.
