The constitution of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600ºC. has been determined by X-ray crystal structure methods. If the results are represented isothermally by a conventional equilateral triangular plot, the single-phase solid solution (body-centered cubic structure) of the iron-rich alloys at 600°C. is bounded by four two-phase areas. Three three-phase areas separate the respective two-phase areas. Three of the phases in the polyphase areas have the same structures as the corresponding phases in the binary iron-nickel or iron-silicon alloys. There are two phases, however, that have not been reported previously and whose structures have been tentatively identified in the present investigation. The solid solubility limit of the iron-rich solid solution at 600°C. was determined by comparing the lattice constants of this body-centered cubic phase in the single and polyphase areas. It has been shown that the lattice constants of ternary alloys may be represented by surfaces whose distances above the ternary plot (representing atomic composition) are proportional to the lattice constants of the respective alloys. Then the intersections of the surface for the single-phase alloys with those for the corresponding phase in the polyphase alloys, at the respective temperatures, are the solid solubility limits of the single-phase alloys at these temperatures. The data of the present investigation were evaluated by this method, although by a system of orthographic projection it was possible to represent the three-dimensional model in two-dimensional diagrams. This investigation has shown that the solid solubility of nickel in the body-centered cubic phase of the iron-rich iron-nickel-silicon alloys at 600°C. changes from 3.7 weight per cent (Owen and Sulley) in the binary iron-nickel alloys to 5.0 per cent in the ternary alloys containing 4.8 per cent silicon. Further additions of silicon increase the solid solubility limit of nickel to 16.0 per cent at 12.6 per cent silicon. From this point the limit decreases to 9.5 per cent nickel at 15.5 per cent silicon and is, of course, zero at 15.3 per cent silicon in the binary iron-silicon alloys.

Numerous consistent seismic signals are being generated in a pilot fireflood in a 750 m deep high permeability unconsolidated channel sand in Eastern Alberta. The pilot has a central air injection well, eight production wells on artificial lift, and two internally placed observation wells. Surface seismometers and a 12-hydrophone downhole string were deployed to detect seismics signals. Date were collected for 22 hours employing signal-triggered event detectors recording on cassette tapes. Monitoring during twelve hours of steady air injection at 625m3/s yielded a clear event frequency of about 50 events/h. The events were mostly clear compressional wave arrivals originating in the vicinity of the firefront. Stopping air injection caused a gradual drop in event frequency, and the rate was reestablished when air injection was reinitiated. Spectral frequency analysis and knowledge of material properties indicate that the events are shears of a stick-slip nature associated with the strain-weakening behavior of the over-compacted reservoir sands. The event amplitude indicates small-scale shearing, and different amplitudes suggest that planes re-shear with lower energy release levels. The triggering mechanism for shear rupture is high shear stress created by thermal expansion in the area of highest ther- mal gradient. Other enhanced recovery techniques may also produce useful signals for process control. In particular, steam flooding, hydraulic fracturing, and high-pressure injection operations likely generate mappable microseismic events which can be applied directly to production/ injection strategy.

WE have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the first we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second, we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allotropic states of iron-a, stable below A2; 19, stable between A2 and A3; and 7, stable above A3-all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, but did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier was even led to think from some of our results that iron could very well be a rhombohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. In 1926 the Clover Splint Coal Co. acquired a lease on 1793 acres of coal lands situated in Harlan County, Ky. about two miles above the end of the Clover Fork Branch of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad at Louellen. This property contains several coal seams near the foot of the mountain, which are excellent coal but too thin to be very attractive now, and carries about 968 acres of the High Splint seam 1375 ft. vertically above the stream and slightly more than three-fourth mile from it. This High Splint seam produces a high percent- age of large lump, is very low in ash and sulphur, stands transportation and stocking exceedingly well and has an excellent reputation as a high-grade domestic bituminous coal. To develop this tract it was necessary to build an extension of the railroad slightly over two miles long, and, in addition to the usual mining equipment and machinery, to build enough houses, with the necessary store and other buildings, to accommodate all of the employees. The topography made construction expensive, so that it was important to keep the cost as low as possible, in order that the proposition might be financially attractive.

This chapter presents a survey of instrumentation and control systems used on ball mill circuits from the past to the present. It is based on the concept of optimization of plant practice, and addresses the influence of the circuit design on the control strategy and on the instrumentation philosophy. Methods of optimization of the grinding circuit, within the constraints of the mill design requirements, are reviewed. The modern use of automation and circuit optimization is critically reviewed for known and possible conceptual control loops. A comparative study of circuit variations due to instrument hardware, location and installation is provided. Future trends i.e., computer control (DDC) and the effects on both the control stratagems and the optimization stratagems are described.

Such forerunners of national benefits have never been so notable in Mexico as in the last four decades of the nineteenth century, during which the national faith in the consolidation of peace has been a guaranty of the development of all the elements of national prosperity. Among all the improvements which have been realized with the unanimous approbation of the people, the railroads occupy a preferred place, for upon them depends the expansion of commerce, of agriculture and of mining, the three great factors of the wealth of Mexico. In a country so extensive as the Mexican Republic, where the inhabitants are greatly scattered, and great distances separate the producer from the consumer, the only way to encourage home industry, and the development of commerce, agriculture and mining, is to construct railroads, which shorten distance, facilitate transportation and minimize its costs. IT will hardly be worth while to spend time over the discovery of this mine, how lumps of galena, were picked up and brought to town, and how legends were told of an old mine from which Revolutionary bullets were made. This is an entirely new mine, with no evidences of former or ancient workings in its immediate vicinity to guide or attract the prospector. The first pit was opened in May, 1874. In August I made a visit to this pit, which was 6 feet wide in the northwest direction, 12 feet long north 80° east, and 6 feet deep. About 4 tons of a galena carrying gray copper, siderite, and quartz, had been taken fron this pit. The lumps were all of them evidently float specimens, and varied from 8 to 12 inches thick, and showed very distinct indica- * An abstract of this paper was kindly presented by Dr. T. Depression of galena by sulfite or chromate ion in xanthate flotation was investigated by means of adsorption measurements, electron diffraction and flotation tests. Flotation of galena was depressed by sulfite ion only when galena had been oxidized; no depression took place with unoxidized clean galena. A similar behavior was found when chromate ion was used as a depressant, with the exception that the chromate ion depressed unoxidized clean galena around neutral pH. Depression was attained with galena on which xanthate still remained in appreciable amounts, indicating that the depression is not due to a decrease in xanthate adsorption. The galena surface produced sparingly soluble films under conditions in which depression of galena took place. These films were identified by electron diffraction as lead sulfite and lead chromate on oxidized galena and as chromic oxide on unoxidized clean galena. These observations in conjunction with contact angle measurements, indicate that the depressing action of sulfite or chromate ion arises primarily from film deposition resulting from the reaction between depressants and the galena surface. The thickness of the film was analyzed by means of electrochemical polarization.

THE lattice parameter of the ß form of pure titanium has been measured at elevated temperature.', ' No attempt was made, however, to correct the parameter obtained to room temperature. In the course of phase diagram studies at Armour Research Foundation and elsewhere, the variation of ß-phase lattice parameter with composition has been established in a number of binary and ternary systems involving titanium. It was possible to extrapolate in these instances to 100 pct Ti to find the apparent lattice parameter of ß titanium at room temperature. Table I lists the results thus obtained. The suggested value for the lattice parameter of ß titanium is the average of the extrapolated values 3.276 ±0.003 kX. This suggested value gives an interatomic distance in ± titanium of 2.837 kX and hence a Goldschmidt atomic diameter (coordination number 12) of 2.925 kX. The latter agrees closely with the value of 2.93 given by Hume-Rothery." From the data of Adenstedt and coworkers' it was possible to determine by extrapolation the mean coefficient of linear expansion for /3 titanium in the range from room temperature to 1000°C. This value, 10.1x10-8 per degree C, compares with about 11x10-8 for a titanium in a similar range." It was thus possible to calculate the parameter at 900 °C. The value of 3.305 kX agrees well with 3.3065 given by Eppel-sheimer.' The majority of values reported in the literature7-', ' were given as Angstroms. In at least one case, ref. 8, it was shown that they actually represented kX units. The source of this confusion appears to be that a large number of tables of X-ray emission spectra list wavelengths as Angstroms and give values in kX units. The accepted conversion factor for kX units to Angstroms (10.' cm) is 1.00202. Thus the parameter of ß titanium suggested corresponds to 3.282A. References J. H. de Boer, W. G. Burgers, and J. D. In 1981 Ertec Rocky Mountain, Inc. completed a significant development in contemporary planning support; MINEPAK was completed, tested on various properties and offered for license. MINEPAK was one of the first computer systems for ore body analysis and mine planning that - Was designed as an interactive and completely integrated system - Was portable so that it can run on many hardware systems - Was really user friendly - Can run on minicomputers and on some microprocessors - Was built around a data base management system MINEPAK was designed to be a completely general block modeller and it achieved that goal. Since it contained a gridded file type, surfaces could be easily modelled but the system needed extensions to allow layered deposits to be modelled with the same ease as block models. So COALPAK was designed. COALPAK is an extension as well as a modification of MINEPAK. A 'layer' file type was defined and retrofitted into the existing system, new software tools were developed for modelling layered deposits, and tools for strip mining were written.

PREPARATION CONTROL IN UNDERGROUND MINING Selective Mining According to district Depending upon the particular geographic location or seam characteristics modem raw coal preparation practices can be used to obtain improved product quality and uniformity. Nevertheless, certain coal markets may require only marginal quality while others may require very high quality and these objectives may be sought by commencing the preparation of coal underground at the "working face." Underground preparation involves choosing those portions of the bed which can be cleaned to satisfy predetermined market requirements involving (1 ) maintenance of uniformity in chemical quality, (2) elimination of removable impurities, (3) control of sizes and size ratios and (4) control of moisture. The methods employed to attain these objectives vary widely with the (1) seam under development, (2) mining equipment available and (3) changing trends in the consuming markets. When a mining property is opened and development progresses from one section to another the (1) petrography of the coal in the bed does not re- main uniform, (2) character of roof and floor are subject to change and (3) character and prevalence of mineral impurities are subject to considerable variation. The quality of coal shipped to market from any mine depends upon intelligent foresight, planning, execution and supervision. Mining becomes a highly technical art. The quality of coal as determined by chemical and petrographic analysis is without question one of the most important considerations in the development and life of any coal-mining property. Variations in such proper- ties as volatile matter, ash, sulfur, Btu content and petrography are of considerable interest and to a limited extent so are such properties as phosphorous content, free swelling index, plasticity, hardness, pressure formation during coking and ash composition. The maximum and minimum specifications of these characteristics as established by competitive market conditions place definite limits on the marketability of a coal. The prospecting and evaluation of any area containing one or more salable coal beds by means of channel samples taken from outcrop openings and/or from diamond-drill cores can yield valuable data on coal characteristics. By correlating the data developed from distinct petrographic sections of channel and/or drill core samples, the quality of the bed according to stratification will be evident. Pressure-temperature-composition data were obtainedfor the Er-H system. Measurements werecar-ried out in the temperature range of 473° to 1223°K, the composition range of erbium to ErH,, and the pressure range of 10-5 to 760 Torr. Solubility relationships were established from these data throughout the system. Three solid-solution phases were delineated: metal solid solution, dihydride phase, and trihydride phase. The trihydride Phase decomposes at about 656°K and 1 atm pressure. The dihydride phase is stable to about 1023°K, but becomes more deficient in hydrogen above this temperature. The equilibrium decomposition pressure-temperature relationships in the two-phase regions, erbium solid solution plus dihydride and dihydride plus trihydride, were deter- The differential heats of reaction in these two regions are AH = - 52.6 * 0.3 and - 19.8 i 0.2 kcal per mole of Hz, respectively. The differential entropies of reaction are AS = - 35.2 * 0.3 and - 30.1 * 0.4 cal per mole HZ.deg, respectively. Relative partial molal and integral thermodynamic quuntities were calculated in the system to the dihydride phase. RARE earth metal-hydrogen systems have been the subject of general survey,1"4 and all have been found to form hydride phases. The heavy rare earths, of which erbium is a member, form dihydride and trihydride phases with different crystal structures, whereas the light rare earths form only a single-phase dihydride which expands without structure change, as hydrogen is added, to the trihydride composition. These materials are of interest primarily because of their theoretical properties, such as bonding, defect structure, and thermodynamic and electronic characteristics. Erbium has been studied in several previous investigations.5, 6 It was deemed desirable to more thoroughly and accurately define the system, both for the phase equilibria and the thermodynamic properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A Sieverts&apos; apparatus was employed to conduct the experimental measurements. Briefly, it consisted of a source of pure hydrogen, a precision gas-measuring buret, a heated reaction chamber, a mercury manometer, and two McLeod gages (a CVC, GM 100A and CVC, GM 110). Pure hydrogen was obtained by passing hydrogen through a heated Pd-Ag thimble. The hydrogen was analyzed and found to have only a trace of oxygen and nitrogen. A 100-ml precision gas buret graduated to 0.1-ml divisions was used to measure and admit hydrogen to the reaction chamber. The reaction unit consisted of a quartz tube surrounded by a nichrome-wound furnace. The furnace temperature was controlled by a recorder-controller to ±1°K. An independent measurement of the sample temperature in the quartz tube was made by means of a chromel-alumel thermocouple situated outside, but adjacent to, the quartz tube near the specimen. Pressure in the manometer range was measured to ±0.5 Torr and in the McLeod range (10-4 to 10 Torr) to ±3 pct. The hydrogen compositions in erbium were calculated in terms of hydrogen-to-erbium atomic ratio. These compositions were estimated to be ±0.01 H/Er. The erbium metal was obtained from the Lunex Co. in the form of sponge. The metal was nuclear grade with a purity of 99.9 pct +. The oxygen content was reported to be 340 ppm and the nitrogen not detectable. Metallographically the structure was almost free of second phase (<1 vol pct). A quantity of sponge was arc-melted for use as charge material. The solid material was compared with the sponge in the pressure-temperature-composition relationships. They were found to be identical. Therefore, sponge material was used henceforth, so that equilibrium could be attained more rapidly. The specimen size was about 0.2 grain for each loading of the reaction chamber. The procedure employed to obtain the pressure-temperature-composition data was to develop experimentally a family of isothermal curves of composition vs pressure. First, a specimen of erbium was wrapped in a tungsten foil capsule to prevent contact with the quartz tube. After loading the specimen, the system was evacuated to less than l0-6 Torr, flushed several times with high-purity hydrogen, and evacuated again ready for the start of the experiment. The furnace was then brought to the desired temperature. A measured amount of hydrogen was admitted into the chamber. Equilibrium was allowed to be attained, the pressure read, and the process then repeated many times until 1 atm of gas pressure was finally reached. Other isotherms were then developed in the same manner. The partial pressure plateaus were determined by another manner. In the solid solution-dihydride region a composition of approximately 1.0 H/Er was selected on the plateau. The temperature was varied throughout the range of interest. At each temperature level, equilibrium was achieved, the pressure read, and the next temperature attained. The temperature was cycled both up and down. In the dihydride-trihy-dride region, the plateaus were determined in the 473" to 651°K range only by heating to the desired temperature and not by both heating and cooling. The data were much more reproducible in this manner. Equilibrium required long periods of time. Specimens were initially hydrided to 2.8 H/Er, so that at the higher

The Bureau of Mines electrowon hafnium metal with an average oxygen content of&apos; 150 ppm at 700°C from an electrolyte containing 27 wt pct LiCl, 62 wt pct RbCl, and 11 wt pct HfC14. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were 90 pct at anode and initial cathode current densities of 86 amp per sq ft. Haf-nium metal with an average oxygen content of 440 ppm was electrowon at 800oC from an electrolyte containing 90 wt pct KC1 and 10 wt pct HfCl4. The average anode and cathode current efficiencies were similar to those obtained in the LiCL-RbCl-HfCl, electrolyte. The chlorine gas given off at the graphite anode was vented through either a silica or a graphite tube to prevent cell corrosion. THE current method for the commercial production of high-purity hafnium is the thermal decomposition of Hfl4.1 The iodide method is not adaptable to continuous process techniques. Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker2 studied the electrorefining of hafnium from hafnium sponge containing 800 ppm oxygen. They failed to obtain hafnium with 600 ppm oxygen in their initial deposits and obtained AEC specification for oxygen only after 75 pct of the soluble hafnium had been removed from the electrolyte. Calculations using their data indicated this was approximately 4 lb of hafnium. The electrolyte was then used to produce approximately 3 lb of hafnium with a low oxygen content. However, no data are shown concerning the amount of anode material initially used or what percent of it was dissolved, therefore, results are not suitable for evaluation of a continuous operation. In general, it was not possible to consistently obtain low oxygen content metal with the electrolytes described by Nettle, Hiegel, and Baker. Wong, Hiegel, and Martinez3 investigated the electrorefining process for hafnium and showed that even by strict control of electrolyte composition only relatively low oxygen reduction could be obtained. The oxygen contained in the hafnium anode material tended to transfer to the cathode deposit and only a limited purification was possible. Both the "iodide" and the "electrorefining" processes depend upon hafnium sponge as a starting material. The sponge is normally produced by magnesium reduction of HfC14 &apos; and does not meet AEC specifications for hafnium metal. Since only 30 pct of the anode feed could be utilized3 in the electrorefining cells, the Bureau of Mines developed an electrowinning process. HfC14 was used as the feed material for the electro-winning process described in this report. Many of the electrolytes used in the electrorefining studies3 ap- peared to be suitable carrier-electrolytes for HfC14. However, in the initial studies on electrowinning, it was desirable to use electrolytes that had low solidus temperatures and could be operated over a wide temperature range to investigate parameters of the process. Therefore, electrolytes containing LiC1, NaC1, KC1, RbC1, CsC1, and HfC14, in various combinations were explored. EQUIPMENT Chlorinator. Hafnium carbide was chlorinated to produce HfC14 in the batch-type chlorination shown in Fig. 1. Chlorination temperatures were measured with a thermocouple placed in the center of the HfC charge. A flow meter was used to monitor the helium and chlorine. The exhaust side of the silica chlorina-tor tube was equipped with a flask for collecting organic material released during the initial heating of the HfC. The temperature of an internal heater, which extended from the HfC14 condensing flask to the hot end of the chlorinator, was adjusted to prevent the HfC14 from condensing before entering the collection flask. Helium and excess chlorine were exhausted through the lid of the collection flask to an aqueous NaOH solution. Sublimer. Initial studies were conducted using a sublimer, Fig. 2, made by placing a 13/8-in. OD nickel thimble 11 in. long, inside a 11/2-in. ID nickel bell 12 in. long, and locking it in place. This unit was loaded with HfC14 and partially immersed in the molten electrolyte for sublimation directly into the electrolyte. In another sublimer shown in Fig. 3, the HfC14 was contained in a "resin reaction flask". Quartz wool, previously heated to 600aC, secured between two nickel wire screens, was placed just above the HfC14 powder. The lid contained a vacuum outlet, a gage, an argon inlet, and an air-cooled pipe for condensing the HfC14. This sublimer was evacuated and heated. The sublimation temperature was not critical and the sublimer operated satisfactorily at all temperatures between 250" and 350°C. Electrolytic Cell. The electrolyte chamber, Fig. 4, was made of mild steel 8-in. schedule 20 pipe, 30 in. long. The exterior was metallized with a Ni-Cr alloy. The electrolytes were contained in a 16 gage nickel or iron liner with a nickel heat shield on top. The cell was heated by a resistance furnace. A 21/2-in. ID by 25 in. long air lock was connected to one port of a two-port cell cover assembly through a slide valve. The cover assembly of the air lock was electrically insulated from the cell and was equipped with a rubber sleeve that provided for the passage of the cathode lead. This allowed the cathode deposits to be removed and a new nickel cathode to be introduced without allowing air to enter the cell. AS the term "hardness" is used with many different meanings, it should be understood that it here means resistance to deformation by compression. It was determined by measuring the pressure, in pounds per square inch, necessary to reduce by 20 per cent., the length of cylinders 1 in. (25 mm.) in diameter by 2.6 in. (66 mm.) long. The tests were made at Columbia University on an Olsen 400,000-lb. machine, the load being applied at a constant rate of speed 0.0319 in. per min. The results were obtained by Messrs. Rigg and Williams, and some of them were given in a paper read at the Sixteenth Annual Meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials, in June, 1913. The remainder of the results were obtained in subsequent experiments by the same authors. In all cases, the results given are the averages of three or more closely concordant tests. All of the spelters tested were of standard commercial grades and all were of compositions making them good deliveries. We have already devoted two previous memoirs to this question. In the firstL we collated and discussed the existing literature on the subject; in the second: we described the crystalline forms obtained by the reduction, at different temperatures, of ferrous chloride by hydrogen or by zinc-vapor. The conclusion from these researches was that the three allo-tropic states of iron—a, stable below A2; , stable between A2 and A3; and , stable above A3—all crystallize in the cubic system. The differences observed were such as are customarily encountered in the crystallographic records of many minerals of which allotropic varieties or isomerides are not known, and did not conform to the ordinary definition of polymorphism. It is, however, improbable that allotropic transformations, which are placed beyond doubt by a series of positive facts, do not involve some changes in the intimate structure. As a matter of fact, the crystals we did obtain were too small to allow of a precise examination, and this might introduce an element of uncertainty in the firm establishment of our conclusions. Professor H. Le Chatelier mas even led to think from some of our results that r-iron could very well be a rhom-bohedron simulating a cube, and not a true cube, and it will be remembered that the crystalline form of bismuth was for a long time incorrectly regarded as cubic. A combination of industrial and laboratory data is used to explain the interrelationships between operating parameters and cementation plant performance as measured by copper recovery and iron consumption. The chemical factors considered are the relative concentrations of copper and ferric ions in solution, acid concentration, the possible buffering action of other dissolved salts and solution temperature. The effects of flow conditions, solution oxidation, the presence of metallic copper and retention time are also considered. Based on the various relationships developed, possibilities for plant optimization are discussed.

Operating one of the world&apos;s largest underground copper mines, Braden Copper Co. has been able to reduce its total accident frequency rate per million manhours by 84 pct, from 27.4 pct in 1945 to 4.45 pct for the first ten months of 1958. It has also won the Inter-American Safety Trophy for 12 consecutive years. The record may seem to indicate a secret formula, but there is none. The results stem only from hard work, and more and more of it.

An experimental study of the process parameters controlling the selective agglomeration of raw coal slurries is described. Particular attention has been paid to the influence of input variables on agglomerate size and process kinetics. These factors were considered to be of paramount importance as they determine the selection and sizing of the process equipment. The variables studied include oil addition, pulp density, agitation rate and particle size of the feed. The results have been qualitatively interpreted in terms of a classical reaction kinetic model.
