The Geology Div. of Northern Pacific Railway Co. has adapted to its exploration efforts field procedures for geochemical sampling and semi-quantitative analysis which have been developed through research by the U. S. Geological Survey. The sampling is done in conjunction with reconnaissance geologic mapping on aerial photographs or during field checking of maps which have been prepared largely by photo-geologic interpretation. Stream sediment or soil samples are taken and readily soluble combined heavy metals are extracted with ammonium citrate followed by colorimetric titration with dithizone at the sample site. The effectiveness of this approach has been demonstrated both in positive and negative results, thereby assisting in the elimination of large areas of land from further immediate attention and in providing targets for followup exploration. An occa sional sample is submitted for spectrographic analysis as a check on the possible presence of other elements of economic significance. Field laboratory procedures are also being implemented for determining molybdenum, mercury, and other metals which may be valuable in themselves or useful as pathfinder elements in outlining mineralized areas. A lead-zinc occurrence in Oregon and a copper deposit in Montana were readily detected and outlined by stream sediment and soil sampling and a heavy metal anomaly that lacks obvious interpretation has been found in northwestern Montana. Detailed mapping and additional sampling are followed by other exploration techniques if warranted. Northern Pacific's program of reconnaissance mineral evaluation of company-owned lands and adjoining areas was outlined in a paper presented at the American Mining Congress meeting in Las Vegas four years ago. That report included policies and procedures with respect to mineral development on Railway Co. lands and may be referred to for information on these matters.1 In a sense this paper is a progress report on the use of geochemical prospecting in Northern Pacific's continuing mineral evaluation program. At this time there are positive results but as yet there is no real success story in the form of a minable ore body. GEOCHEMICAL PROSPECTING PROCEDURES The decision to use geochemistry as a reconnaissance exploration tool must be followed by research into sampling and analytical methods and into the interpretation of results. Various analytical methods were tried and evaluated by the Geology Div., including hot and cold acid extraction with and without fusion of the sample, panning and magnetic separation followed by dithizone testing of the magnetite, and cold aqueous extraction of metallic ions followed by indicator tests. Samples were first sent to the laboratory for analysis; later field laboratories were established and now virtually all testing is done at the sample site. It was concluded that, where applicable, the quickest dependable methods for reconnaissance use are the dithizone field tests for readily extractable heavy metals. This involves the simultaneous treatment of a sample, usually of soil or stream sediment, with two immiscible liquids; one a cold aqueous extractant (ammonium citrate) and the other a solution of dithizone in toluene or xylene.2 Dithizone is a colorimetric indicator that reacts quantitatively with copper, lead, zinc, and several other metals to form colored complexes in organic solvents. Results may be expressed in ml of 0.001 pct dithizone that are required to reach the blue end point, or calibration of the test results can be carried out with standard solutions of zinc; conversion factors would then be expressed in ppm, zinc equivalent. Calibration of dithizone solution with zinc standards indicates that 1 ml of 0.001 pct dithizone is equivalent to approximately 0.25 ppm of zinc. An authoritative report on dithizone field tests authored by H. E. Hawkes in the June-July 1963 issue of Economic Geology* states "The appeal of these techniques has been the simplicity and speed of the determinations as compared with more tedious laboratory determinations of trace metals in weathered rocks, soils, or plant materials. The scanning electron microscope (SEM), became commercially available in 1966. Embodying some unique features not provided by conventional electron microscopes, this new electron-optical instrument offers the scientific community a new way of observing the surfaces of materials. In rock mechanics research, the SEM should prove a useful basic tool in characterizing rock fracture on a very small scale and thus contribute to a better understanding of rock behavior at larger scales. This article presents one example of how the SEM is being applied to such research at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center operated by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in Minneapolis. This research center conducts theoretical and experimental studies on a broad range of mechanisms that induce disintegration by the application of energy to rock.1 Some of these studies are concerned with the relation of microstructure to rock behavior and are carried out mainly with the petrographic microscope. At the same time, however, the center recognizes that this relation must be studied through several orders of magnitude, from lattice-size units of rock-forming minerals to field-size rock units. The SEM fits this scheme by extending the capability of the petrographic microscope into smaller orders of magnitude. However, because its resolution is limited to about 200 A at 10,000x, the SEM is not capable of resolving lattice-size units, and hence a conventional electron microscope with a much greater resolution capability is necessary at this order of magnitude.

MOST extraordinary of the technical developments in placer gold mining during the last five years has been the rise of the dragline dredge, by which is meant a floating washing plant for auriferous gravel, fed by a dragline excavator. The idea originated in the fall of 1933, when Horace Onyett constructed a floating washing plant to which gravel was delivered by a dragline excavator standing on dry land. Onyett's operation near Oroville, Calif., and another started by H. F. England later on Wyandotte Creek, Butte County, Calif., yielded '75 oz. of fine gold before the end of 1933. Although the first operation was abandoned shortly as un- profitable, the dragline-dredge method of gold recovery soon began to expand at a boom rate. As a matter of interest, the Onyett operation was taken over later by Lord and Bishop, who are re- ported to have succeeded in making it the first financially successful drag- line dredge. A SELF-RESPECTING miner doesn't wash the cuttin's off his hard hat until he quits his job but, on the other hand, he keeps his lamp clean and a "spot" focus on the work at hand; the former habit is a matter of pride and the latter serves for efficient operation. During 1949, the mining engineer got all the "wet raises" for the problem of cutting costs to meet the drop of metal prices and keeping research work up to schedule when strikes tied up his work were his headaches. We note, not without admiration, that he hasn't washed the muck off his hat in token of surrender but, on the contrary, his light shines bright on the job to be done as can be seen in the following pages. Few people have any conception of how much ore and rock have to be mined and how much sorting it takes to cull a pound of copper from a 1 % ore body. These people would be even more startled to picture the problems faced by the engineer in mining and extracting, profitably, .2 oz of gold from a ton of ore as is done at some of our lode mines. Strikers have sometimes kept our researchers from their pilot plants and research laboratories, but the end of the year shows progress in making ore out of taconite and ferruginous sandstone, with a pilot plant in operation at Aurora, Minn., and plans for one near Birmingham. Unfortunately, it looks as though the mining engineer will have to make John Doe secure in mineral resources in spite of himself. Coal for steel, power, and to warm our homes is still economically possible, in spite of Mr. Lewis, through development of mechanized tools for mining. During the year, the use of continuous mining machines has extended, transport systems are being adopted to keep the ore flowing from the face to the tune of 40 tons per man-shift. Experiments in the gasification of coal are going forward in several places and may eventually extend our fuel reserves by the addition of coal seams now too lean for mining. Liquid fuel from coal, oil shale, or natural gas will become economic when oil consumption exceeds our supply; but, at less than 30 cents a ton direct cost for mining oil shale, the engineer is almost making it competitive under present market conditions. In this age of specialists, the mining engineer is still holding his own as a broad-gauge man. As a matter of fact, he is emerging from a stage of semispecialization as a coal, nonmetallics, or metal mining man to the realization that, with mechanization, mining is fundamentally materials handling whether it is fluorspar, coal, or copper ore. From the coal business come rubber-tired mechanical loaders to the iron mines of Birmingham. Shuttle cars are also finding application in the lead mines of the Tri-State. Open-pit methods are universal. Belt conveyors, trucks, Diesels, and mobile, jumbomounted drills are finding application in all types of mining. In preparation, such methods as flotation,- heavy density, electrical, and centrifugal are finding application in coal, nonmetallics, and metals. These concepts have been recognized by the mining engineer who has kept himself informed and has been quick to seize a method, machine, or a process from another operation and, with ingenuity, applied it to his problems. This, our Annual Review issue, is written by mining engineers. In gathering these separate articles under one cover for publication, we think of it as a trrbute to the tireless energy and skill of these men. They get little of the publicity accorded physicists, medical men, labor leaders, or company executives, but they supply raw materials without which industry would die.

Most underground mining operations are dependent on pumping installations to keep the mine unwatered. The reliability of such installations is obviously of paramount importance. The volume of water to be handled is often considerable, and the total head is relatively high. In these cases, both capital cost and operating expense of the pumping installations will become significant factors in overall mining costs. To insure reliability and to keep efficiencies, and hence operating costs, within acceptable limits it goes without saying that mechanical maintenance of a mine pumping installation must receive scrupulous attention at all times. Large mine pumping installations today almost invariably use multistage centrifugal pumps, since positive-displacement units would not be economically competitive except under very unusual conditions of small volume combined with extremely high heads. Centrifugal pump maintenance, under ideal circumstances, would be confined to parts subject to normal running water, i.e., bearing surfaces, stuffing box packing, and shaft sleeves. Under adverse conditions, however, metal may be lost from the wetted surfaces of a pump by erosive or corrosive action of the pumped fluid, and maintenance costs can easily attain enormous proportions.

There has been a considerable amount of research developed which shows that the close contour cutting of an excavation prior to removal of the central core will increase ground stability while concommitantly, reducing the number and size of blastholes required to create the excavation. To date, the industrial development of this technique has however, centered on the development of equipment based on simple cutter movement and mechanical rock cutting. The advent of reliable field operable high pressure waterjet cutting equipment with the very low reactive force required to hold the head in position has opened the way for a much smaller and more manueverable system. The advent of small, micro-computers allows the programming of accurate profiles for cutting tools on excavation equipment. The combination of these two technologies will allow the generation of complex as well as simple, excavation profiles and lead to the potential pre-support of the opening before major excavation is completed. A brief description of the necessary components and their functions is encorporated in the initial prototype design as given.

THE obligation of an employer to the State requires certain things of him as matters of good citizenship: for instance, that his workmen shall have a living wage, that child labor shall not be employed, that injuries from accidents shall not- make workmen a charge upon the State, and that the laborer's children shall have opportunity for education and to become good and useful citizens. Affairs of this kind are not taken up as philanthropy, for the officials of a corporation or a large manufacturing concern may not feel at liberty to spend the funds of their company as prompted simply by motives of kindliness; but they may spend company money on such matters because it is good business. For years, the poisonous effects of lead, phosphorus and dust have been emphasized in books on industrial hygiene and their elimination has been urged; but the more important and everyday physiology of the workman himself has been neglected. Part of my object in writing this paper is to show how our knowledge of physiology may be applied to working conditions in everyday life. In the interest of industrial laborers, accident compensation laws have been enacted in 33 States. This has been carried forward rapidly, because it has been shown that it pays both employer and employee. A further step is the recognition of sickness and disablement independent of accidents, not only because of their immediate cost to the worker and to the employer, but because continued efficiency in work and business depends largely upon health. Some measure of the importance of health in industry can be gained by the knowledge that records kept by some companies which now make this the subject of careful inquiry show that the time lost by employees, through illness; is several times as much as that lost as the result of industrial accidents. It is true that accidents frequently result in permanent disability or death, but it is equally true that illness is also a cause of permanent disablement or death. Thus the chief difference is that the loss to the employee through accidents occurring in the course of his employment is now generally recognized as a cost

The year 1936 in Illinois was marked by considerably increased activity in drilling, both wildcat and proved territory, in leasing, and in seismic and geologic exploration. Of the 92 oil and gas wells completed during 1936 in Illinois, 49 were oil wells, 3 were gas wells and 40 were dry holes. This compares with but 34 completions in 1935. The total of the daily initial productions of the new oil wells was 1755 bbl., or an average of 36 bbl. per well. One new field was discovered, the Bartelso field in Clinton County. The leasing of some large blocks of acreage in Clay, Marion, and other counties by the Carter Oil Co. in the late fall of 1935 was followed in 1936 by extensive leasing in southern Illinois by 10 major companies and many smaller companies and individuals. It is estimated that 2½ million acres were under lease by the end of 1936. Seismograph surveying has been carried on by about seven companies, and the number of seismograph parties operating in Illinois has varied from six to eight throughout most of 1936. It is estimated that approximately two million dollars has been spent in the state in seismic and geologic exploration and in leasing during the last quarter of 1935 and all of 1936. PRODUCTION statistics show that during the period of emergence from the depres¬sion the coal industry was becoming increasingly cognizant of the economic and competitive necessity for mechanizing. About 1935 many of its leaders were becoming aware also of the alarming scarcity of men properly trained to cope with the new problems of mechanization. In order to get a factual statement of this problem, a special AIME Coal Division Committee + was requested to survey the condition. Its investigation disclosed that graduates of mining schools going into coal mining numbered 16 in 1939 and 15 in 1938. With this as a background, Pittsburgh Coal Co. foresaw that a comprehensive program was necessary if it was to enlist the services of trained technical men, who were an indispensable part of a mechaniza¬tion program. The purpose of this paper is to review the program set up, to comment on the successes and failures and to outline the future course of action. SUMMER WORK An inescapable conclusion from the mechanization statistics was that the opportunities in coal mining were good. Not only was there a void in technical skill to fill from past years, but the ac¬celerating rate of mechanization indicated an increasing demand for technically trained men for the future. The remedy lay primarily in presenting facts con¬cerning the coal industry to the under¬graduate engineers before they made their professional occupational choice. Based on this idea, one of the key points in the program - was summer vacation work for the undergraduate, which, through the inducement of summer earnings, brought men into the mines to take a look at the prospects. This was more successful than statistics indicate because the war badly scrambled the orderly working of the program, but it could not obscure the value of a summer work program. A decided advantage was that it gave the company a preview of the graduate. An observation on this part of the program is that it is extremely hard to gauge lower classmen, and we found it wise to give them the benefit of the doubt, as the last two years in college bring about surprisingly rapid develop¬ment in some men. DEEPEST hole in the earth, and deepest producing oil well in the world-such is well No. K.C.L. A-2, of the Continental. Oil Co., completed on April 12 in the San Joaquin valley about four miles west of Wasco, Calif. It penetrated the earth's crust to a depth of 15,004 ft.- almost three miles-a depth that exceeds by over 2200 ft. that of the previous record holder in western Texas. It is now producing oil from sands at a depth from 13,092 to 13,- 175 ft., which is about 1500 ft. deeper than the record formerly achieved in Louisiana. Continental's new well was bottomed in what is possibly Domengine-Avenal Eocene sand, and is producing from the Middle Miocene equivalent to the Rio Bravo sand.

DUPING the last two years, and especially during the last six months, a number of important articles upon the new methods for the desulphurization of galena have been published in the technical periodicals, particularly in the Engineering and Mining Journal and in Metallurgie. I proposed for these methods the type-name of "lime-roasting" of galena as a convenient metallurgical classification,' and this term has found some acceptance. The articles referred to have shown the great practical importance of these new processes, and the general recognition of their metallurgical and commercial value which has already been accorded to them. It is my present purpose to review broadly the changes developed by them in the metallurgy of lead, in which connection it is necessary to refer briefly to the previous state of the art. The elimination of the sulphur-content of galena has been always the most troublesome part of the smelting-process, being both costly in the operation and wasteful of silver and lead. Previous to the introduction of the Huntington-Heberlein process at Pertusola, Italy, it was effected by a variety of methods. In the treatment of non-argentiferous galena concentrate, the smelting was done by the roast-reduction method (roasting in reverberatory furnace and smelting in blast-furnace); the roast-reaction method, applied in reverberatory furnaces; and the roast-reaction method, applied in Scotch hearths 2 Precipitation-smelting, simple, had practically gone out of use, although its reactions enter into the modern blast-furnace practice, as do also those of the roast-reaction method.

THE high tension belt conveyor is introducing a new and tremendously expanded era of low cost bulk material handling. High tension belt conveyors are generally those installations involving very long centers, high lifts, or drops, in which the belts are stressed up to their maximum tension values, and further, where the belt construction provides tension capacity far beyond what is possible with conventional belt constructions. With these high tension installations, the magnitude of the forces involved demands careful refinement of accepted design practice in order to achieve optimum balance of all factors. No attempt will be made to evaluate the relative merits of belt conveyor haulage with other means of transportation. For present purposes, it is assumed this has already been done in favor of belt conveyor. Neither will any attempt be made to evaluate the various conveyor belt constructions now available or to balance the advantages of various types of mechanical equipment. It is also assumed that the basic haulage information on which the conveyor design is based is accurate and complete. A sustained maximum, uniform load on the belt at all times must be achieved through proper feed control and the use of adequate surge storage to level the peaks and valleys of any varying demand for the material being handled. General Belt Capacity Considerations The belt conveyor capacity tables published by various belting and conveyor equipment manufacturers vary to a considerable degree, and the ratings given are quite conservative. Of necessity, these published ratings are based on the handling of average materials under average conditions. In applying a high tension belt, all possible capacity from the belt must be obtained in order to hold its width to a minimum and thereby limit the initial cost. Two factors are involved, loading to maximum cross section area and traveling at a maximum practical speed. Belt Loading: Proper treatment of the loading of the belt will result in maximum cross section to the load, and published capacity ratings can be exceeded, sometimes by appreciable margins. On the 10-mile conveyor haul used in the construction of Shasta Dam, California, although the rated capacity of the belt line was 1100 tons per hr, at times the system handled peak loads of 1400 tons per hr, almost 25 pct better than the rated capacity. One of the large coal companies has been able to exceed rated capacity by as much as 50 pct. Loading conditions which must be controlled are: 1. Large lumps must be scalped off and rejected or the load must be primary crushed before being placed on the belt. 2. The material weight per cubic foot must be accurate, must be known for all the materials being handled, and must be known for the complete range of conditions of the individual material being handled. Long centers and high lifts magnify small differences into serious proportions. 3. Uniform feeding to the belt is most important. Various types of feeders are available, which can be used to place a constant predetermined volume of material on the belt, or, where an appreciable range of material weight exists, through electrical control actuated by current demand, to place a predetermined uniform tonnage on the belt. One long slope belt in a coal mine in Pennsylvania is being fed at three separate stations with the controls so arranged that whenever the maximum load is going onto the belt from the first station, the other two stations automatically cut out. Whenever the load from the first station drops back, the other two stations again automatically cut in. 4. Careful design of the chutes and skirts is necessary to get the load centered on the belt with a minimum of free margin along each edge. Some free margin at the edge of the belt is necessary to prevent spillage, but if the load can be kept accurately centered, this free margin area can be reduced, and more material can be carried on the belt. What can be accomplished in this respect will vary widely, depending on the nature of the material being hauled. The chute and skirt design must also protect the belt. 5. The design of chutes and skirts should also get the load traveling in the same direction and close to belt speed, so that the load comes to rest on the belt as quickly as possible. The design of the chutes and skirts is worthy of careful study, and after a system is put into operation it should be experimented with to get the best results. Belt Speed: High belt speeds should be used in high tension work. Obviously, high belt speeds enable haulage on a narrower belt, reducing initial cost. AN unusually interesting meeting devoted to the discussion of the ways and means of improving coal mining practice, through the larger use of machinery underground, was held in the Auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building on March 11. The meeting was organized by the Materials Handling Division of the A. S. M. E. and held under the auspices of the Metropolitan Section of that Society and the National Coal Association. The New York Section of the A. I. M. E., which had been invited to participate, found itself unable to do so formally because of a conflicting date for its March meeting but informally did its part to aasure the success of the meeting. As a result of the discussion at and preceding the meeting, the National Coal Association, through Walter Barnum, chairman of its research committee, has asked the A. S. M. E. and A. I. M. E. to join the Association in a study of the present problems of the bituminous coal industry. Messrs. Harry L. Gandy, Calvin W. Rice and H. Foster Bain have been selected to act as a committee which shall develop plans for a joint program.

In March 1962, over three months ahead of schedule, production began from the Ventersdorp Contact Reef of the Western Deep Levels Ltd. mine on the West Witwatersrand. Few mines have captured the interest of mining men and the public as has Western Deep Levels. It has presented the gold mining industry with a challenge which involved the opening of an ultradeep mine with the attendant problems of exceptionally heavy capital commitments ($77 million to start of production), high rock temperatures and pressures at great depths, cementation and pumping in an area notorious for the volume of subsurface water, and the necessity for entirely new thinking and the application of new ideas. HISTORY Not all the problems facing Western Deep Levels were, however, new. Situated 43 miles from Johannesburg, just off the main road to Potchefstroom, Western Deep Levels was the sixth company to undertake mining operations on what is known as the West Wits line and it could draw on the wealth of experience gained by other pioneer mines in the area.

THE Sunrise iron mine of The Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation is in Platte County, Wyoming, about 110 miles north of Cheyenne. It is served by the company-owned Colorado and Wyoming Railway, which connects with the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy and the Colorado and Southern railways at Guernsey, Wyoming, a distance of 6 miles from the mine. The original Sunrise claims were staked mainly by United States Army officers and soldiers stationed at old Fort Laramie, because of small showings of copper in the Carboniferous limestones that form a horizontal capping overlying the Huronian iron ore. A small copper smelter was operated for about three years at Fairbanks, now an aban-doned town on the North Platte River. As many of the copper shafts and test pits near the present Sunrise mine were deepened, they pene-trated the capping and encountered iron. ore or gray sericitic schist, and were abandoned. Evidence of an early interest in iron ore was found when the Chicago claim was stripped for mining. A narrow, winding crevice was dis-covered, which led downward 20 ft. through the capping to the underlying soft red hematite, in which a room 10 by 14 by 7 ft. had been excavated. Stone hammers and wedges and a few rusted pieces of iron were found on the floor, and the evidence is conclusive that the excavation was used up to rather recent times by Sioux Indian medicine men, to provide war paint.

The pumping operations at the Chief mine have been unique in the respect that for many years the entire flow of water into the mine has been disposed of by pumping into natural underground " caverns" or "sinks." Volumes up to 4000 gpm have been pumped into these caverns with no apparent tendency for the caverns to fill with water, and it has never been proven that any of the water returns to the mine workings. Major pumping operations have been carried on during two periods, the first from 1918 to 1927, and the second from 1942 to the present time.
