EXTENDED discussions, by inviting attention to problems affecting the conservation of natural resources, have encouraged investigations as to their sufficiency, with the general result that the more thorough the examination, the less cause appears for anxiety as to the exhaustion or serious depletion of these resources. The extent of industrial development, the large plants and the enormous volumes of materials required, when compared with conditions a few decades ago, are sufficiently startling to enlist the attention of those who "fear .the pace," and yet in but few instances has real solicitude for the future. been warranted by a knowledge of true conditions. In a former communication, presented 5 years ago,1 I endeavored to emphasize the fact that true conservation represented the best utilization of reserves and not the locking up of resources for future use; a conviction which has become more pronounced as the subject was investigated. Prophecies of the, early exhaustion of mineral resources have raised the question as to our permanent reliance upon these, and encouraged inquiries which have in most cases developed reassuring conditions. But the fact that the future appears less dark than prognosticated cannot excuse wastefulness or improvidence; and detailed study which demonstrates an apparent abundance of natural resources should encourage their best application. In making inventories of resources one is liable to confine conclusions as to availability upon present circumstances and conditions in the past, or to formulate data for the future upon methods which are rapidly being displaced. In reserves which are not reproductive, such as minerals, the possibilities of exhausting the supply are startling if estimates assume that future extensions will follow methods which were less economical than those now employed, or to he used, and we dare not claim that the limit of advanced practice has been attained.

RECENTLY it has become the custom of retiring presidents to talk of the relations of the Institute to its membership and its constituency- and it seems a good precedent to follow. Past-president Smith reviewed our relations to materials and to society in general. Mr. Bradley spoke of the value and use of our publications and of our educational duties. My message will be in regard to the coordination of our various groups of member interests and of service to industry. This Institute has, within its organization, four divisions and fourteen technical committees--each interested in a separate put very definite subject, and each covering a phase of mining engineering interest. These vary from geology and the geophysical methods of prospecting, to the physics of the structure of metals, truly "from the mine to the consumer"-from the preparation for mining to the final use of that which has been mined.

On Wednesday evening, Jan. 27, 1915, were held in the auditorium of the Engineering Societies Building the inaugural exercises of The Engineering Foundation, established by the United Engineering Society. The initial gift to the Foundation of $200,000, made by Ambrose Swasey, Past President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was formally accepted at this time. So far as known this is the first instance of a foundation devoted to engineering purposes. This meeting con-stituted also an appropriate tribute to the generous gift made to the Foundation and gave opportunity for expression of the satisfaction and approval which are felt by engineers everywhere at the establishment of a means of promoting the good of mankind through the work of the engineer along the broadest lines. Gano Dunn, President of the United Engineering Society and Past President of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, acted as presiding officer, and on the platform were seated representatives of the three societies constituting the United Engineering Society, and of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Members of the four societies and many other friends interested in the profession composed the audience.

FEW phase diagrams of alloys composed of two transition metals have been adequately studied, probably because of the high melting points involved. Transition metals are the elements that have inner shells incompletely filled with electrons. They comprise groups IIIa to VIIIa of the periodic table, including more than half of all metals. We have chosen to study two systems whose comparatively low melting points allowed the alloys to be melted in a molybdenum resistance furnace. The nickel-palladium system proved to consist of a simple series of solid solutions, but iron-palladium manifested several remarkable features. The main characteristics of the latter diagram were decisively established, but lack of time prevented precise determination of phase boundaries. The gamma to alpha transformation in this system is unusual and warrants further study. Grigorjew1 determined the liquidus and solidus of the iron-palladium system by thermal methods. He found a minimum melting point, but no eutectic. He also found that palladium lowered the gamma to alpha and raised the gamma to delta transformation temperatures of iron, with a complete series of solid solutions existing between gamma iron and palladium. His measurements also indicated a compound or super-lattice near the composition FePd3. Jellinghaus2 found that annealing at 500° C. greatly increased the magnetic coercive force of an alloy of composition FePd. X-ray dif-fraction photographs showed that a tetragonal ordered phase had formed during the anneal.

The formal outline of Mr. Hague's life and work is embraced in the following statement, chiefly based upon data furnished by him, at my request, shortly before his death. At that time the probability that I would survive to record his death was apparently small; but I urged upon him the duty of providing, whether for me or for my successor as Secretary of the Institute, trustworthy material for the notice which somebody would some day have to write—and which might otherwise be incomplete or incorrect. Mr. Hague, with characteristic promptness and freedom from affectation, did what I asked of him; and I am therefore able to present an authoritative sketch—concerning the details of which I shall add my own comments, and some particulars obtained from friends. James Duncan Hague was born Feb. 24, 1836, at Boston, Maes., where his father, Rev. William Hague, D.D.,an eminent clergyman, then resided. After a preliminary education in private schools, he studied in 1854 at the Lawrence Scientific School of Harvard University; in 1855 and 1856 at the University of Göttingen, Hanover; and from 1856 to 1858 at the Royal Mining Academy of Freiberg, Saxony. In 1859-1861 he was attached as chemist to a South Sea exploring expedition, sent by W. H. Webb, of New York, to examine Jarvis, Baker, and other islands for phosphate-deposits. After the outbreak of the Civil War, he entered the U. 5. Navy, serving for a year as Judge Advocate to the fleet stationed at Port Royal, S. C. In 1863 he became Superintendent of the Albany and Boston copper-mine, in the Lake Superior region, where he was also connected with the earliest development of the Calumet and Hecla property. ONE of the major uses of barium in metallic form is as a getter material in vacuum tubes. Because of the high chemical reactivity of the metal, Ba-Al alloys are extensively used. Numerous methods for the preparation of Ba-Al alloys have been published, a few of which1-4 are cited here. Most of these methods were found to be quite elaborate, involving the reduction of BaO, and not too well adapted for the close control of the final composition of small amounts of alloys prepared for laboratory use. A simple laboratory method for the preparation of Ba-A1 alloys in small batches starting from pure metals was devised, so that it was possible to control the desired compositions to within 1 pct. The pertinent features of the alloy system Ba-Al5 are 1) an intermediate compound BaAl, with the melting point of 1050°C, and 2) a eutectic between aluminum and BaAl4 at 98 pct Al. The accompanying sketch shows the experimental arrangement for the preparation of the alloys. Weighed amounts of aluminum and barium were placed in an alumina and a stainless steel crucible, respectively. According to the supplier's specification, the purity of the metals used in the alloys is as follows: a) aluminum rods—99.9 pct Al, and b) barium rods—99.5 pct Ba. The stainless steel crucible, tapered at the bottom and having a 1/16 in. diam hole, rested on top of the alumina crucible. The assembly was placed inside a graphite sleeve which rested on a refractory platform. The platform moved the assembly up and down through the field of a radio frequency coil. A glass bell jar was placed between the crucible assembly and the radio frequency coil to maintain a steady flow of helium around the melt. A small window was cut out on the wall of the alumina crucible to observe the progress of the re- action and to record the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The platform was first raised high enough to move the barium out of the radio frequency coil field in order to allow only the aluminum to melt. The assembly was then lowered so that the barium began to melt and flow out through the small orifice into the molten aluminum. In order to keep the violence of the exothermic reaction under control, the rate of flow of barium was carefully regulated by raising or lowering the crucible assembly. All the samples prepared by this technique were examined by a Norelco X-ray diffractometer using CuKa radiation, The diffraction specimens were prepared by placing the finely powdered samples in flat specimen holders. The Ba-Al alloys prepared with a high barium content were found to consist mainly of BaAl4. The structure of BaAl4 has previously been reported by Alberti and Andress.8 They found that BaAl4 was body-centered-tetragonal with an a0 = b0 = 4.530Å and c0 = 11.14Å. An alloy whose composition was found by chemical analysis to be almost 100 pct BaA1, was used to determine the relative intensities. The d-spacings were obtained from the same alloy to which a small amount of tungsten had been added as a calibrating material. Accurate values for a, and c, were calculated according to the method proposed by Taylor and Floyd.' The calculated values are: a, = b, = 4.566Å and c0 = 11.250Å. The measured d-values for BaAl4 are shown in Table I along with relative peak intensities above background and hkl indices. Acknowledgment The authors are grateful to L. J. The suggestions of the members of the Institute are very much desired by-the Committee on Nominations prior to deciding upon its nominations to fill the places of those officers who retire early in 1917. The Committee must make its final report to the Board of Directors early ill October. The members are, therefore, -asked to send in promptly their suggestions for Directors as well as for Vice-Presidents and President. The Committee hopes to hear from a large number of the members. Significant cost savings and improved ground stability are two initial indications from the current wet process shotcrete ground support program at the Lakeshore mine. The area of shotcrete for ground stability is not strange to the Lakeshore operation. Since the beginning of the project, various shotcrete techniques have constantly been experimented with, incorporating all the latest technological developments. Over the years, the use of shotcrete has been employed as a primary, temporary, or permanent support, singly or in combination with rockbolts and steel sets. The extent of shotcrete usage compared with steel sets and rockbolts has varied from time to time as dictated by the overall state of the art. In 1972, for example, the ratio of the linear drift footage supported with shotcrete to that supported with steel sets averaged 1.0. In 1973, that ratio was about 3.0. Overall, for the Lakeshore mine, there are about 8000 drift ft of shotcrete, 8000 drift ft of steel sets and timber, 750 drift ft of formed concrete, 21,000 drift ft of rockbolts, and 3700 drift ft of combined type support.

(communication to the Secretary): In connection with Mr. Douglas's mention of the continuous charcoal kiln used at Kopparberg, some further data concerning this important invention may be of interest. Before giving these, however, I will say a word or two concerning other features of Swedish practice. In 1894 I spent two days at Soderfers with Mr. Tom Bergendal, the manager of the works, and was specially interested in the gas-producers and wood-drying kiln, illustrated in the paper contributed to our Transactions by Mr. Odelstjerna in that year.* The wood-drying kiln is, however, quite different in design and construction from Ljungberg's charcoal kiln. In the summer of 1894 it was discovered that by placing the gas-producer as close as possible to the open-hearth furnace, and working the producer hot, ordinary weather-dried wood, still containing a considerable percentage of moisture, could be used to advantage in the melting-furnace. Hence, the dryingkiln was needed for wet wood only. One of the iron-works of the Udeholm Go. was the first to adopt the Lundin saw-dust gas-producer and condenser, enabling them to make gas from saw-dust containing 45 per cent. of moisture, and convey the gas from the condenser through wooden pipes to the Siemens steel-melting furnace.† This sawdust gas gave very satisfactory results in iron-works; but the proprietors experienced much trouble by reason of the pollution of rivers by the tar-water from the condenser. INTRODUCTION The use of computers to assist the mine ventilation engineer began to grow in the early 1950s when electrical analogue devices were developed for the analysis of mine airflow systems in Europe and the United States (l,2,3). The need for quantitative planning of airflows in mines had become pressing and analogue computers fulfilled a useful purpose for over a decade. From about 1964 onwards, digital computer programs for mine ventilation network analysis became available (4,5) and, superseding the analogues, spread rapidly throughout the major mining countries. The successful implementations of such programs resulted in further research being directed towards the development of simulation programs to model the quality as well as the quantity of air flowing through underground workings. It is no understatement that digital computers have revolutionised environmental planning techniques in modern mining industries. This paper discusses the complex interaction of natural and mining factors which governs environmental hazards in underground mines and further indicates some of the simulation techniques which have entered practical usage or are at an advanced stage of development. THE PROBLEM OF ANALYSING THE MINE ENVIRONMENT The traditional methods of approaching environmental problems underground were based largely on empirical or intuitive techniques. The reason for this lay in the intricate relationships which exist between the many variables that influence the mine environment - and which limit the use of purely analytical methods to the simplest of cases. They tnust thank him for the vast array of $acts he presents, and for having given them sixty-four analyses with which to combat his own conclusions and to establish their own, which are entirely opposite to his. In Dr. Duclley" discussion of his former investigation, at the Pittsburgh meeting, he said, "If you do not like my conclusions, draw your own conclusions." I have studied his last paper as thoroughly as the limited time since I received it would adruit, and have drawn some concluvions which I will first state, and then attempt to demonstrate. Joseph William Richards, was born in Oldbury, Worcestershire, England, on July 28, 1864, of English-Scotch parents, Joseph and Bridget (Harvey) Richards. In 1871, he came to this country with his parents. He attended the public schools of Philadelphia, Pa., where his father was a manufacturing metallurgist, and in 1882, graduated from the Central High School with the degree of A. B. The same year he entered Lehigh University, from which he received the degree of A. C. (Analytical Chemist) in 1886; M. S. in 1891, and Ph. D. in 1893. His connection with the university was continuous from 1887 until his death, and he therefore adds another to the list of names of men Prominent in the A. I. 11. E. who have helped to develop Lehigh University to the important position which it now occupies in mining and metallurgical education in respect of world-wide fame. It is fitting to recall in this connection that, Eckley B. Coxe, a fonnder of the A. I. M. E., four times its vice-president,, and president in 1878-79, was literally a pillar of the university for several years prior to his death; Thomas M. Drown, founder, vice-presi(lent, secretary for 11 years, honorary member, and president in 1897, was president of Lehigh University from 1895 to 1904; and Henry S. Drinker, founder, manager, vice-president, and honorary member, was president of the university from 1905 to 1920. Doctor Richards was no less active in both institutions. With the exception of the years 1886 to 1887, when he was superintendent of the Delaware Metal Refinery of Philadelphia, his professional life was devoted to the upbuilding of the metallurgical department of the university, in part through his continuous services as a member of the teaching staff, and in part through the international renown won for the department by his achievevements as author, investigator, expert and rerognizcd authority in metallurgy, especially the metallurgy of aluminum, metallurgical-chemical calculations, and electrometallurgy. He was assistant instructor in metallurgy and blowpiping in 1887; instructor, 1888-90; instructor in metallurgy, mineralogy and blowpiping, 1890-97; assistant professor, 1897--1903; professor of metallurgy, 1903-1921. He died at his home in Bethlehem, Pa., on Oct. 12, 1921, of heart failure. To the A. I. M. E., for a continuous period of a dozen years, his services were equally loyal and effective. He was vice-president, 1910-11, and 1916-17; councilor, 1912; dirctor, 1913-15; chairman of the Iron and Steel Clommittee, 191-1-21; he was one of the framers of the Insti-

Drown, founder, vice-presi(lent, secretary for 11 years, honorary member, and president in 1897, was president of Lehigh University from 1895 to 1904; and Henry S. Drinker, founder, manager, vice-president, and honorary member, was president of the university from 1905 to 1920. Doctor Richards was no less active in both institutions. With the exception of the years 1886 to 1887, when he was superintendent of the Delaware Metal Refinery of Philadelphia, his professional life was devoted to the upbuilding of the metallurgical department of the university, in part through his continuous services as a member of the teaching staff, and in part through the international renown won for the department by his achievevements as author, investigator, expert and rerognizcd authority in metallurgy, especially the metallurgy of aluminum, metallurgical-chemical calculations, and electrometallurgy. He was assistant instructor in metallurgy and blowpiping in 1887; instructor, 1888-90; instructor in metallurgy, mineralogy and blowpiping, 1890-97; assistant professor, 1897--1903; professor of metallurgy, 1903-1921. He died at his home in Bethlehem, Pa., on Oct. 12, 1921, of heart failure. To the A. I. M. E., for a continuous period of a dozen years, his services were equally loyal and effective. Only three are now available; 4th Annual Report (1912), 15th (1924) and 18th (1927) Reports since 1921 contain statistics on mineral production. All reports contain papers on various subjects, many of which are still available separately, and are so indicated in the list of publications. Seven bulletins have also been issued, principally of interest to paleontologists Bulletin 7, The Pensacola terrace and associated beaches and bars in Florida (1931), is of more general interest Bulletins will be sent upon receipt of postage.
