Separate treatment sections are isolated by outside stockpiles fed with radiating conveyors. Hence the name "radial" layout. Many plants are designed with "linear" layout where successive operating stages are dotted like beads along a string of conveyors.

THE following presentation of the more important accumulated facts and probabilities involved in copper ore deposition is based on my experience in examination work and study of the extensive litera-ture of the subject; to make personal mention of all sources of information would require the naming of a small army of able geologists and other investigators who have contributed to, building up the science. I have tried to present the salient features of the subject in logical order and condensed form, and to point out the relative importance of processes involved. Doubt-less many geologists could suggest some changes and many additions. ORIGINAL SOURCE The original source of all copper was in the earth's interior; it has been brought to the outer part of the earth, within reach of man, in three ways: (1) By intrusions and flows of basic igneous rocks containing copper in minute quantities, presumably as silicate or sulfide. No orebodies have been formed by this method. (2) As segregations within intrusive igneous rocks, the copper minerals having solidified at the same time as the rock itself. The few deposits known to have been formed in this manner have been of little or no importance. The oft quoted Sudbury nickel-copper deposits are now known to belong to the class following. (3) By gaseous or liquid aqueous emanations from ,large deep-seated masses of intrusive molten rock. These emanations, or mineral solutions, ascended through zones of connected openings in the earth's crust and dropped their load at points far above their source. Deposits formed in this manner were the primary source of nearly all, if not all, of the world's copper production.

With the greatly expanding use of magnesium during the war, it appeared necessary to the War Metallurgy Committee that the notch sensitivity of magnesium alloy extrusions be further investigated and the influence of various factors upon notch sensitivity be noted. Accordingly, the National Defense Research Committee of the Office of Scientific Research and Development placed a research contract with the University of California, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee. The work discussed herein was done under "Restricted" Project NRC-21, reported in Dec. 1943~; it has been released for publica-tion by the O.S.R.D. Scope of the Investigation The notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions was determined under axial tension, and also under several conditions of nonaxial tension. Hardness, grain size and other metallographic features were observed; stress-strain data were obtained, and the chemical compositions of the alloys were determined, in order to correlate these quantities with thc notch sensitivity. Notch sensitivity under axial tensile load was determined for a few specimens which had been cold worked to various degrees by tensile prestraining. Magnesium alloy extrusions studied included Dowmetal 0, X, J, and A(. For comparison, extrusions of aluminum alloy 24s-T, cast bars of aluminum alloy 122-T2, and cast bars of magnesium alloy C were also tested. The specified chemical composition of these alloys is given in Table I. All bars tested were within specification limits of composition. Investigation of thc tensile notch sensitivity of various magnesium alloy extrusions, under conditions of axial and eccentric load, showed little or no correlation with stress-strain or other conventional data. Since the many uncontrolled variables present might mask significant relationships, one alloy was selected for intensive study. Magnesium 0 alloy extrusions were subjected to experimental heat treatments, and the ,Changing hardness, tensile strength, microstructure, and notch sensitivity observed. Experimental Techniques and Procedures Tensile Testing Bars used for axial loading were machined with % in.- and with 34-in. minimum diam1 and included specimens with 60" V notches (Fig I and 2). Each V-notched specimen was roughed out carefully and then finished with a honed tool. H G. MOULTON should not be confused with the famous economist of the same name. Our H. G. stands for Herbert George, whereas the chief of the Brookings Institution is Harold Glenn. Like most so- called New York members of the Institute's hoard, Mr. Moulton came from the West, in this case from Idaho where he was born, and Oregon, where he was educated at the University of Oregon. His early work included such jobs as mucker, assayer, smelter, chemist, mine surveyor, draftsman, engineer on surveys and construction, and assistant on mine examinations. In 1909 he was engaged as mining engineer by the firm of Eugene Meyer, Jr. S' Co., continuing with them for the next eight years.

This paper outlines research conducted by the US Geological Survey on the geophysical signatures of chromite. Results of the chromite study highlight the importance of a laboratory research Phase (petrophysical and petrographic studies) at the beginning of work on a new commodity; a realistic ore deposition model to serve as a conceptual framework, and the necessity to continually test, refine, and modify it during the study; and indirect geologic/geochemical indicators, secondary associations, and the use of multiple physical properties. The keystone to the success of the study is frequent and substantive dialogue among geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists.

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of preventable electrical source injuries is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals throughout the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data from test site and laboratory indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. These low order or "transient" velocities were believed to originate because of inadequate primer strength or a primer diameter to column diameter mismatch. However, the nature of this experimental work was generally confined to small diameter column charges detonated in iron pipe simulated bore-holes. It was questionable whether the smaller scale laboratory data was applicable to large 12 1/4 and 15-in. boreholes.

THE large iron-ore producers on the Mesabi Range are able to maintain the silica in their shipping products at from 8 to 10 per cent by mixing ores of various grades, some assaying 4 per cent silica and some as high as 18 per cent silica. For each ton of 4 per cent silica ore mined, a ton of 14 per cent silica ore can be mined and mixed with it and the average grade maintained at 9 per cent. This mixing operation has made possible the utilization of large cluantities of ore too lean to be used alone. and herein lies the advantage of the producers who operate a number of mines at the same time. As the grade of the ore from one of the properties falls off, a little high-grade ore from another property can be mixed with it and the average maintained, while if one property alone were being operated all of the ore below grade would be left behind.

The interface energies of solid and liqid ch?&apos;omiu?.z, nolybdenu?rr, and tungsten are not geatly aff&apos;ected by rhenium and therefore are not a ttlajor factor in the ductili zing rhenium effect in Croup VI-A metals. THE interface energies of the refractory Group VI-A metals, chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, are not well-established. The objective of this investigation was to study the liquid surface tension, solid surface energy, and grain-boundary energy of these metals and compare them to those found for the bcc solid-solution alloys, Cr-35e,&apos; 0-33e,&apos; and -25e. Five techniques were used to measure interface energies in high-purity polycrystal rod, wire, and sheet at 0.6 to 1.0 of the absolute liquidus temperature. The alloys were chosen to see if there was any connection between interface-energy behavior and the ductilizing rhenium effecL4j5 EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials. A description of the materials used is presented in Table I. Chromium rod was prepared by arc melting iodide process crystals supplied by Chromallo Cor., hot extruding, and warm swaging to 0.63-cm-diam rod.6 The sheet was prepared by rolling as-extruded rod to 95 pct reduction in area from a hydrogen furnace at 800" to 900°C and surface grinding off 0.02 cm from each face. Cr-35Re rod was prepared by arc melting sintered rhenium powder and iodide chromium crystals, warm rod rolling to 50 pct reduction in area in cans, and swaging to 60 pct reduction in area at 1100" to 1200°C. Some of the rod was warm-rolled to sheet and then surface-ground. Portions of swaged chromium and Cr-35Re were further reduced by swaging and drawing to 0.013-cm-diam wire by the General Electric Co. Mo-33Re and W-25Re rod, sheet, and wire were provided by Chase Brass and Copper Co. The molybdenum sheet consisted of two lots, both essentially the same except for the carbon content. Liquid Surface Tension. The liquid surface tension of Cr-35Re, Mo-33Re, and W-25Re was measured by a combination of pendant-drop and drop-weight methods using techniques already decribed." Following out-gassing, molten drops were formed on the ends of centerless-ground Mo-33Re and W-25Re rods by electron bombardment at 5 x 106 mm. Similar drops were formed on outgassed Cr-35Re rods by induction heating under 1 atm of 99.995 pct Ar. Solid Surface Energy. Solid surface energy was measured by conducting microcreep experiments on molybdenum, Mo-33Re, chromium, and Cr-35Re wires at 2350°, 2306, 1550°, and 180O°C, respectively. In preparation, gage marks -2.5 cm apart and -0.001 cm deep were circumferentially scribed on the wire with a razor blade. Weights of the wire material were then attached. Five to seven reasonably straight wires were hung in a container made out of the wire material. The free end was placed through a small hole in the removable top and secured by bending a small portion 90 deg. The containers not only tended to provide vapor-solid equilibrium for the wires but also protected them from gaseous impurities. They were nominally 2.5 cm in diam by 5 cm high and were made from extruded chromium rod, Cr-35Re arc casting, molybdenum bar stock, or welded Mo-33Re sheet. After deg re as ing, the assembly was outgassed at a relatively low temperature to 2 x 10"5 mm and then recrystallized 2 to 8 hr at the creep temperature in a rhenium-element resistance furnace. The static argon atmosphere was gettered by tantalum radiation shielding. Specimen temperature was measured optically to 25"C using calibration with known melting points and blackbody conditions. The wires generally developed a stable bamboo-type structure according to Fig, l(b), (c), and (d) and retained their gage marks [upper portion of Fig. l(d)]. One or two of the weights were clipped off to provide a low load for the creep anneal. When the writer first began his search for the early history of coal he was amazed at the paucity of information in literature about it, and while after six years many of the reasons for such a scarcity are understood, there are still many cases, even within the last two centuries, when one who can appreciate the tremendous part coal has played in the development of modern times, finds it hard to realize how little attention was paid to this material in those early clays. Occasionally a traveller or observer is found who foresaw how valuable coal was to be when industries were developed, but these were few and to most of those recording its occurrence it was just another mineral. George Washington was farsighted in his view of the development of this country and the need for means of transportation across the mountain barrier, but it was at least sixteen years after he must first have known of coal before he made any reference to it in his journals. He did, however, knowingly or not, select some valuable coal properties in the lands lie obtained in the West. This was then almost entirely an agricultural country, and what industries there were found a great abundance of wood fuel within easy access, there were no steam plants, and all iron was made with charcoal; in fact, the "captive mines" of the iron industry then were large timber "plantations," and when these were exhausted the furnace usually was abandoned and another one built elsewhere, as transportation of charcoal was quite expensive. Along the seaboard the cities and industries began to import coal from England and Nova Scotia early in the eighteenth century, but until the war of the Revolution began the total quantity of coal used yearly in this continent did not exceed nine thousand tons. In 1800 only two places, Pittsburgh and Richmond, Virginia, were using coal to any extent for domestic purposes and it was much later. than this that the amount of coal used in Philadelphia, New fork, and Boston exceeded that of wood. Practically all of the early travellers and writers mentioning coal are noted in the following pages. Several Englishmen who were evidently familiar with its use and value at home, mention its presence as being of great future promise to the young nation, but to nearly all it was more or less of a curiosity and the smoke caused by its use an abomination, and it

In this Monograph are presented operating data, operating costs, plant descriptions, and detailed flowsheets of twenty seven different cyanidation plants around the world. Twenty three of these are gold producers and four are primarily silver producers. With one exception, (Pueblo Viejo scheduled to start up in late 1974), all of the plants are operating at the time of this writing. Selection of operations was based on metallurgy and were grouped into free milling lode ores, other free milling ores, ores requiring sulfide flotation in addition to cyanidation, ores requiring roasting, telluride ores, South African ores, and silver ores. Each of the plants described illustrates some unique form of cyanidation metallurgy. It is the hope of the authors that publication of this Monograph will be an aid to metallurgists in bringing new and successful cyanidation ventures into operation.

The cyanide process in the United States, notwithstanding numerous failures made under the direction of the owners of the patent-rights, and others, has now passed its experimeiital stage, and can, undoubtedly, be made successful when intelligently applied to suitable material. Much, however, remains to be known as to the exact conditions under which this process is applicable to the treatment of gold-bearing ores. If the owners of the patent-rights in this country have ever scientifically investigated the matter, they have never published any valuable informatioil on the subject. Other parties who are now using the process (often independently of the patentees), have nothing to gain by publishing their experience; and, moreover, many of the chemical reactions described in the text-books refer to the use of solutions of potassium cyanide many times stronger than are used in the metallurgical process.

Procedures are given for calculating stresses in underground tunnel supports which accounts both for the structural behavior of the support and that of the adjacent rock mass. Stresses in the support are caused by service loads and rock reactions. Service loads are due to rock pressures, hydrostatic and hydraulic pressures, selfweight of the support, or other utilitarian-type loads. Rock reactions, equal and opposite those in the support, are due to the deformational interaction that results as service loads deform the tunnel support against the adjacent rock mass. The procedures developed for solving this problem are an application of matrix structural analysis. The principles involved in this method allow for the consideration of the deformable characteristics of most tunnel support systems and an iterative solution procedure is applied to determine the areas of support-rock interaction. Numerical results of example problems are given.

Many investigations have been made on the effect of the variables of pressure, sintering temperature and sintering time on the physical and microstructural charactcristics of metal-powder compacts. Severa1 such investigations have indicatcd that pressure is the least important of these three factors in an attempt to secure a dense. strong compact by a simple coltl-pressing and sintering procedure. However, it was felt that a further study of the effect of pressure on pressed and sintered metal powder compacts might prove interesting, for the following reasons: In work done in the past on the effect of pressure, temperature. arid time, the, metal-powder compacts were subjected to long sintering periods, and temperatures right up to the melting point of the metal were applied. It was thought that pressure might exert a more profound effect under short-time simtering and within narrower ranges of temperature. such as normally would be applied in large-scale production of metal-powder parts. 2. It was hoped that something further might be learned of the nature of the bond in pressed and sintered metal-powder compacts. 3. It was thought that interesting infor mation concerning the work-hardening effect of pressure on the crystal structure. of sintered metal-powder compacts would be obtained. Procedure Rectangular bars, 2 by 1/2 by 1/4 in. were molded from the following metal powders: Atomizcd till powder, 325-mesh Atomized aluminum powder, 325-mesh Reduced copper powder, 100-mesh Electrolytic iron powder, 100-mesh Atomized 70-30 brass powder, l00-mesh The, till powder was molded at various pressures up to 40 tolls per sq. in. This was the maximum, because at higher molding pressures there was considerable extrusion of tin into the die wall, jamming the die plungers. The tin specimens were not -in tered, as this phase of the work was- done merely to see how much a very sold metal could be compressed. The aluminum powder was compressed at various pressures up to 50 lons per sq in. Higher pressures could not be used because of extrusion into the die wall The compacts were sintered one hour at 000 in pure dry hydrogen. The copper powder was molded at vari-ous pressures up to 96 tons per sq. in. One set was sintered at 750°C., another at 050 C. for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. The electrolytic iron powder was molded at various pressures up to 00 tons per sq. in. and sintered, one set at Soo°C and one set at 1300°C for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. Extra 325-mesh specimens were also prepared to study the effect of reduced particle size on grain structure. The brass powder was molded at various pressures up to 96 tolls per sq. in. and silltered for one hour. one set at 65o°C. and one set at 800°C, in pure dry hydrogeu.

Iodide-grade titanium, two oxygen alloys, and two aluminum alloys were studied by means of creep-rupture tests from 1000° to 2000°F. From the test information an evaluation was made of, 1) the relative creep-rupture strengths of the u (hexagonal-close-packed) and 0 (body-centered-cubic) forms of titanium and some of its alloys; 2) the effects of solid-solution strengthening by oxygen and aluminum on the u and 0 structures; and 3) the extent and effect of atmospheric oxygen alloying on rupture life in tests above about 1000°F. THE use of titanium alloys at temperatures above 1000° F has been considered unlikely by most investigators because of low creep strength (based on a requirement for room-temperature ductility, formability, and weldability) and low oxidation resistance. The results of this testing program do not entirely uphold this pessimism in terms of strength and oxidation resistance. The observations described below are based entirely on stress-rupture results, although some creep tests were also carried out on these alloys. Three items of primary importance are covered: 1) Stress-rupture data in the form of the Larson-Miller parameter curves for several titanium alloys at temperatures up to 2000°F; 2) The relative strengths of the hexagonal-close-packed a structure and the body-centered-cubic 0 structure; 3) The effects of solid-solution alloying on the creep-rupture properties of titaniu&apos;m at elevated temperatures. Only two investigatons have reported the creep- rupture properties of titanium at temperatures above 1000° F. Lunsford and rant&apos; tested iodide titanium; their values are also utilized in the paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After a few tests had been made in a conventional creep-rupture test machine, it became clear that some sort of atmospheric protection would be necessary for short-time tests conducted at temperatures above 1600°F, or for times greater than 100 hr at 1200°F or above. Several furnace units and test machines were constructed, the most successful of which is shown in Fig. 1. Certain experimental difficulties peculiar to titanium were encountered; for example, the use of molybdenum holders was dictated because titanium forms low melting-point eutectics with conventional high-temperature alloys containing appreciable amounts of iron, nickel, or cobalt. This same difficulty made the use of chrome l-alumel thermocouples in direct contact with a test specimen impossible, above about 1500" F. The high-temperature high-vacuum furnace shown in Fig. 1 was capable of maintaining a vacuum of better than 10"5 mm of mercury at 2000°F (pressure measured in cold part of system) and 5 X lo-&apos; mm at room temperature. AN increased demand for brown iron ore in the Birmingham district during the past 18 months has caused renewed activity both in prospecting and mining these ores. In recent years the production in Alabama has ranged from 41,559 tons in 1932 to 639,351 tons in 1928. During the last 9 years about 83 per cent of the total brown ore produced in the United States has come from Alabama (Tables 1 and 2). PROSPECTING Two methods of prospecting are used in this district: (1) test pits, (2) churn-drilling. Usually there is certain quite definite information on an area to be prospected; some of the indications are float ore such as small gravel or small and large boulders known as "dornicks" scattered over the surface, and ore exposed by erosion in gulleys and ravines, which have cut or eroded through the overburden. Often these natural erosions furnish an indication of the thickness of the ore and to some extent of the area of the ore body.

THE influence of environment on the mechanical properties of metals has been extensively studied and documented.&apos; Most investigations have dealt with an interaction between a particular environment and a specific metal surface and the concomitant change in bulk mechanical behavior. Typical contributing media are oxide and metal film:;, electrolytes, and other surface-active agents. In the last category fall controlled gaseous environs (i.e., pressure or vacuum). Most vacuum exposure experiments prior to 1963 were conducted at pressures s>10-6 torr and elevated temperatures, or in such a manner as to prolong the exposure (e.g., by stress-rupture, creep, and fatigue). Little attention has been given to vacuum environment effects on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to simple uniaxial deformation at room temperature. Test times and temperatures were assumed too ineffective as far as bulk changes were concerned. Further, the contribution of surface effects to the bulk mechanical behavior of metals was considered minimal. Under vacuums of the order of 1.0- 8torr and higher, molecular densities and, consequently, the rate of monolayer formation are such that exposures from seconds to days would be required for complete gas coverage. Thus, atomically clean surfaces created under ultra-high vacuum could conceivably maintain their cleanliness for time intervals orders of magnitude greater than at higher pressures. The influence of this unusual type of environmental surface phenomenon on the short-term bulk mechanical behavior of aluminum was first observed by Krame and Podlaseck in 1963.&apos; kin equivalent effect was reported for magnesium by Williams and Nelson.3 It was concluded from these studies2,3 that vacuum and, consequently, the monolayer formation rate of the oxide, were responsible for the described changes in flow behavior. The presence of an oxide layer impedes dis- I) EXPERIMENTAL DATA: MOLYBDENUM The tensile behavior of molybdenum was investigated by the author4-6 at ambient temperature over a range of pressures from 760 to 10-10 torr. These studies revealed that the flow behavior of the bulk specimens (0.200 in. diam by 2 in. gage length) was independent of pressure on sintered (0.062 mm grain size) and arc-cast polycrystals (0.012 to 0.149 mm grain sizes) and single crystals. Since the specimens were relatively large in size, it was assumed that any flow behavior effect would be surface-limited because of the short-term deformation procedure. Strain-rate-change experiments performed to determine the activation volumes for individual specimens at 760 to 10- 10 torr further indicated that the surface flow contribution was either minimal or zero, contrary to the findings of Shen el a1.7 on aluminum. Although the flow behaviors did not change, specimen ductility did change. For the sintered material at a strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4, specimen ductility was -9 pct higher at l0- 10 torr than at atmospheric pressure (dry nitrogen). A more comprehensive investigations on this same material revealed a distinct pressure dependence, Fig. 1. Intermediate and atmospheric pressure tests were obtained by backfilling the system from l0- 10 torr with extra dry, prepurified nitrogen. Other environments (air and purified argon) were also utilized for the 760 torr experiments; the results were essentially the same as those for dry nitrogen atmospheres. Departure from the fracture strain values obtained at 760 torr takes place in the vicinity of l0-6 torr, as indicated by the scatter band; a noticeable ductility increase is apparent at l0-8 and 10-10 torr.

The resignation of Herbert Hoover, Director General of Relief in Europe, from his post as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Food Administration Grain Corporation, in which capacity he had served for nearly two years; and the reorganization of the corporation under the name of the United States Grain Corporation, with Julius Barnes, United States Wheat Director, as its new head, took place at the annual meeting of the stockholders, held in New York, July 1. This action on the hart of Mr. Hoover is believed to be one of the first steps in his intended withdrawal from public service upon the conclusion of the war service of the various departments of the Food Administration, or as soon as they shall have been absorbed by other agencies. The Grain Corporation has been, for the past two years, a vast collection and distribution agency. Its function has been to assist in supplying to the Allies and the American Army and Navy large quantities of wheat, wheat flout, and other foods, with very little disturbance of American prices, and with such an even control of American distribution that reserves from one crop to another have been brought down to the lowest possible compass and without the dvelopment of actual scarcity anywhere in the United States. In the year just past, it carried on all the buying and the shipping for, the Belgian Relief Commission, until the commission retired on May 1 and the Belgian Government itself undertook its own overseas supplies. During the twenty-two months of its existence the corporation had disbursed $3,500,000,000 and collected an equal amount, selling for over-seas shipments commodities valued at $1,800,000,000, at an operating expense of about $3,250,000, or one-sixth of 1 per cent. During this time it has not lost a single dollar through fire loss.
