The death of Privy Councilor Bruno Kerl, on March 25, 1905, terminated a distinguished and useful career. Bruno Kerl was born March 24, 1824, at St. Andreasberg in the Harz, and entered in 1840 the mining school of Claus-thal, where he studied for three years, working at the same time in the mines and stamp-mills. After an additional year of practice in the silver-reduction and iron-works of the Upper Harz, he passed his examination as a metallurgical graduate, and studied for a gear at Göttingen under Wöhler in chemistry, Hausmann in mineralogy, and eminent teachers in other branches. In 1846 he was employed at the Oker works, but very soon left this post, to become a tutor in chemistry, metallurgy, etc., at Clausthal, where he continued to labor until 1867. During this period the Clausthal school became a completely equipped Mining Academy, and Kerl was made in 1862 a full professor. Not many accounts of mining methods or labor conditions in the mines in early days can be found; all that have seemed to be authentic have been included in the preceding chapters. In practically every field opened before 18.10 the first coal was recovered by quarrying, or strip mining, the operations, of course, being by hand and on a very small scale; new places were opened as soon as mining became difficult or expensive. Where it became necessary to drift into the hillsides, the first coal was taken out by sleds, and later by small wagons, the power being supplied by the miner, often assisted by dogs. Wooden rails then came into use with small cars running on them. These cars were very small, usually holding only a few bushels; in the Belleville, Illinois field as late as 1863 cars having capacities of 10, 12, 14 and some as large as 30 bushels were in use. It was not until late in the 1830's that horses or mules came into use for haulage purposes in the Pittsburgh region, although some had been used in the Richmond, Virginia field at an earlier date. Coal was usually undercut by hand and wedged down, until explosives came into general use, and in nearly every field the coal was forked into the cars, the fine coal, or slack, being left in the mine. Hours worked were very long, but few records remain to show what they were at different places and times; there was undoubtedly a great variation between districts and mines. Roy stated a miner could often produce 5 or 6 tons in a day of 8 or 9 hours in a 5 or 6 foot seam, but in another seam possibly could mine only 3 1/2 to 4 tons. He estimated an average day's work in a four foot seam at about 3 1/2 tons.1 In a strike in the Belleville field in 1863 it was found that an average skilled miner in the field could probably produce 4 to 5 tons a day.2 This was only the coarse coal loaded and did not include slack. In 1873, a coal undercutting machine was tried at a mine about two miles from Brazil, Indiana, said to be the first coal machine ever invented in the United States. Under the auspices of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory of the University of California analyzed an experiment to provide information as to whether the chimney of broken rock produced by a deeply buried nuclear explosive could be "drawn" by conventional techniques. Since many low-grade disseminated ore-bodies occur in a granite media, the experiment took place in a granodiorite-quartz monzonite intrusive porphyry in the Nevada Test Site as a follow-up to the Department of Defense's Hardhat detonation in February 1962. For emplacement of the nuclear device, a 12 ¼ - in. pilot hole was reamed to a diameter of 44 in. and a depth of 950 ft in one pass using a Hughes multiple-cluster rotary bit. It was then cased to 36 in. ID. The center of the explosive device was located 938.85 ft below the collar. The yield of the device was predicted to be 5 kilotons, or an equivalent of 5000 tons of TNT; the yield was later confirmed by chemical means to be 5.4 kilotons.

Harry HaRkness Stoek, whose sudden death on March 1,1923, was a great shock to his friends in all park of the country, was a man of remarkable personal characteristics and mental ability. Through an acquaintance with him of nearly 35 years, during 12 yeam of which I was intimately associated with him both in business and socially, I learned to appreciate his many high qualities, his strict adherence to high professional and social ideals, and his lovable traits of character. In this appreciation I was joined by every one who was thrown in close personal contact with him. He was a conscientious student, not given to hasty judgments, but when he formed an opinion he was positive in upholding it. At the same time, he was most courteous and kindly in combatting that which he believed was erroneous. In fact, I never knew a person of his attainments more modest, forceful and kindly, or one who had a keener sense of clean humor. In his private life,he was a devoted husband and father, a consistent communicant and worker in the Episcopal Church, and was charitable in all things. In fact, his whole life was marked by helpfulness to others and a determined and successful effort to "make the world better by his having lived in it." Doctor Stoek was born in Washington, D. C., Jan. 16, 1866. His early education was obtained in the public schools of that city and he graduated from the Central High School in the first class to graduate from a high school in Washington. He entered Lehigh University in 1883, graduated in 1887 with the degree of Bachelor of Science, and after a year of post-graduate study in mining and metallurgy he received the degree of Engineer of Mines. During the summer vacation in 1885, he served as an assistant in the Department of Mineralogy in the National Museum at Washington, and during the summer of 1887 acted as U. S. Government inspector of dredging on the Tharnes River, Connecticut. From June, 1888, to January, 1900, he was assistant engineer for the Susquehanna Coal Co., at Wilkes-Barre, Pa. From January, 1890, to June, 1893, he was Instructor in Mining, Metallurgy and Geology at Lehigh University, and had charge of all courses in mining and metdlurgical design, and the visits of students to mines and metallurgical

Levi Holbrook was born in Westboro, Mass., March 7, 1836. He was a descendant of John Holbrook, who came from England in 1660 and settled in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Mr. Holbrook was prepared for college at Williston Seminary, East-hampton, Mass., and after one year spent in the West, he entered Yale. He was a, member of Phi Beta Kappa and of Linonia. During the six months following his graduation he was in Boston, under medical treatment for his cyes; then he took a horseback trip across the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River and back, and resided in Danville, Va., for a time. From 1860 to 1863, as his eyes permitted, he was a student of modern languages and literature in Cambridge, Mass., part of the time being a resident graduate at Harvard University. Finally, however, he was obliged to abandon the idea of a literary life and from 1864 to 1867 he was engaged in financial business in Boston. The following year, he spent in New York, and then traveled for a year in Europe, Egypt and Asia Minor. In 1871, he returned to New York City. Mr. Holbrook was a member of the New England Historic Gcncalogical Society, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Sons of the Revolution, was registrar general of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America from 1915 to 1920, and had been governor of the New York society of that order. He was also a member of the American Fine Arts Society, the Order of the Cincinnati, the American Geographical Society (of which he was a councillor and secretary). and the Geographical Society of America. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1878, and served as manager from 1895 to 1897. Mr. Holbrook died on July 26, 1922, from organic heart trouble, at his residence in Center Harbor, N. H. He was married Dec. 27, 1871, in Newark, N. Y., to Viola, daughter of John A, and Elizabeth (Failing)Vowers, who died on Sept. 10, less than six weeks after her husband. His two children, Clark Holbrook of Red Bank, N. J., and Mrs. Julian P. Smith, survive him

The first of a series of special war meetings of the New York Section of the American Institute of Mining Engineers held on the evening of July 20 at the Machinery Club, preceded by an informal dinner. The subject for discussion was the important general one of the manganese supplies of the steel industry of the United States. It had been intended to include chromium supplies but this matter was crowded out and left for a later meeting. The principal speaker of the evening was Donnel F. Hewett of the U. S. Geological Survey, who, as a result of his recent studies of the resources of the country, ably presented the question of the extent to which the United States can furnish manganese ore.

INTRODUCTION Activated charcoal has been used for several centuries in many capacities including the recovery, isolation and purification of various materials (1). The first use of charcoal in a gold metallurgical system was in the extraction of gold after chlorination (2, 3,4). The gold was dissolved in a chlorine system and subsequently filtered through charcoal. The application of charcoal with cyanide extraction was patented by Johnston (5) in 1894 and adopted commercially in Australia in 1897. The process consisted of dissolving the gold and silver in a potassium cyanide solution and passing it through a series of charcoal filters. The charcoal was subsequently smelted to recover the gold and silver. The interest in the use of charcoal diminished in the first part of the twentieth century as the practice of the use of zinc as a precipitating agent increased. However, in 1916, the Yuanmi Mine in Australia replaced their zinc precipitation plant with a charcoal adsorption plant. In 1926, Scott and Gross (7) of the U. S. Bureau of Mines con- ducted extensive research on the adsorption of gold and silver from cyanide leach solutions. Among their findings was the result that the most important factor in improving the adsorptive power of charcoal was heat treatment with oxidation by air or steam. The work of Zadra (8) in 1952 stimulated renewed interest in the use of activated charcoal in gold and silver recovery with the development of a method of recovery of the gold and silver from the charcoal other than its destruction by burning. In August 1954 a low altitude test geophysical survey was made in the Green Pond area of Morris County, New Jersey, with a Gulf Research and Development Co. Model I1 total magnetic field variation magnetometer mounted in a Sikorsky S-55 helicopter. The test was made in this area to compare the results of a high precision, very low altitude magnetometer survey with an existing ground magnetic survey in this area having known magnetite concentrations, so that the method could be used in areas of difficult access for the detailing of airborne magnetometer anomalies of interest in place of ground surveys. The load capacity of the Sikorsky S-55 permitted installation of a recording scintillation counter so that a radioactivity survey would be made simultaneously with the magnetometer survey.

George Hammell Cook was born at Hanover, Morris County, New Jersey, January 5, 1818. His early education was obtained in the country school, and he was, for a short time, a teacher in his native town. In 1836 he was engaged, as a civil engineer, in making surveys and locating the line of the Morris and Essex Railroad from Newark to Morristown, and the extension of the road to the Delaware River. Appreciating the advantages of a thorough education, and seeking a wider field of usefulness, he entered the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy in 1838, and, was graduated from that .school in 1839. In this institution he heard the lectares of Amos Eaton, the famous teacher, from whom so many of our older scientists caught their inspiration and love for the natural sciences. THE hardening of alloys by the precipitation of a second phase has long been an important technological process. One approach towards improving our understanding of this phenomenon has been a correlation of mechanical properties with such parameters as particle size and inter par ticle spacing.' Several reviews of such data have appeared.2-4 A major limitation to this approach has been that for most alloys the particles are submicroscopic in size in the range of optimum hardness. Precipitation-hardening copper-cobalt alloys, therefore, are of interest, because the ferromagnetic properties of the precipitate make it possible to measure particle size, number of particles, and so forth, from magnetic measurements alone.5, 6 Livingston and Becker7 have applied these techniques to a study of precipitation hardening in an alloy of 2 pct Co in copper. It was found from magnetic measurements that nearly all the cobalt to be precipitated was out of solution within a few minutes at 600°C, whereas the peak in tensile yield stress was not attained until a much longer aging time. Thus during the first 1000 min of aging time at 600°C the Yield stress was increasing while a constant volume of precipitate was coarsening, i.e., while particle size and interparticle spacing were increasing. Peak yield stress was reached at an average particle radius of about 70A. The earlier study was confined to one alloy at one aging temperature, so that the volume fraction of precipitate was fixed and, therefore, particle size and interparticle spacing could not be independently varied. The work has now been extended to several alloys of varying percentage cobalt in copper, and to aging at various temperatures. It was hoped that such a study might clarify the relative importance to precipitation hardening of particle size, interparticle spacing, and volume fraction of precipitate. EXPERIMENT The alloys studied contained 0.7, 1.3, 2.0, and 3.2 wt pct Co in copper. They were prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic cobalt in a vacuum -induction furnace, worked to 3/8-in.-diam rod, and machined into tensile specimens with a gage section 1 1/2 in. long and 3/16 in. in diam. All specimens were given a solution treatment consisting of a 30-min anneal in nitrogen at 1000° C followed by a quench into iced brine. Subsequent aging was done in nitrogen and followed by a water quench. Average grain diameter was approximately 0.01 in.

Developments in reverberatory furnace practice at Noranda over the period 1928 to 1953 are described. Features of interest are increasing furnace tonnage from 700 to 2000 tons per furnace day, the use of the suspended basic roof, and improvements in furnace fuel ratio. Points of comparison and contrast between Canadian and American furnace practice are given. OPERATIONS at the Noranda smelter have been described in a series of papers published between 1930 and 1945.1-4 In the present paper the development of reverberatory furnace practice over the 25 year period from the beginning of operations up to the present time will be reviewed and current furnace practice will be described in some detail. Particular attention will be given to those features which are characteristic of Canadian practice: first, the use of the suspended basic roof; second, the deliberate driving of furnaces to give tonnages in the range of 1400 to 2000 tons of solid charge per furnace day; and third, the continuous operation of furnaces at high tonnage for many years without any extended shutdown for repairs or rebuilding. Finally, points of comparison and contrast between reverberatory furnace practice in Canada and the United States will be discussed. The Noranda smelter, which started in December 1927, was built for the reduction of ore from the Horne mine where early development had shown a comparatively small tonnage of rich cop-per-gold ore of a grade and character which would require direct smelting. The smelter was designed for a capacity of 1000 tons of ore a day and originally consisted of eight roasters, two reverberatory furnaces, and two converters, together with necessary auxiliaries. The discovery of a large new body of ore in 1928 made it necessary to increase both the size and the scope of the reduction plant. A mill which was ultimately brought to a capacity of 3000 tons a day was built for concentrating low grade ore and in addition the capacity of the smelting plant had to be greatly expanded, so that for the next fifteen years every effort in the smelter was directed toward achieving maximum tonnage. Because the layout and design of the smelter made it impracticable to add a third furnace, it was necessary to increase the tonnage on the two original furnaces by improvements in furnace design and operation, roasting and converting equipment being added as required to meet the demands of increased furnace capacity. The smelter tonnage, which reached a peak in 1941, was curtailed in 1944 when it became necessary to operate on a one-furnace basis because of a reduction in the output of the Horne mine due to a shortage of labor. Two-furnace operation at a moderate tonnage was resumed in 1949. In the early years the smelter tonnage was made up almost entirely of Noranda ores and concentrates. However, since 1937 an increasing tonnage of ores and concentrates from other mines has been treated in the smelter. In recent years, with decreased production from the Horne mine, copper concentrates from several mines in the district, treated on a custom basis, have formed an important part of the smelter tonnage. THE high affinity of molten titanium for oxygen and nitrogen has resulted in considerable difficulty in developing a satisfactory melting procedure. It has been found necessary to perform melting operations either in a vacuum or inert atmos-phere, and failure to obtain a satisfactory crucible material has necessitated the use of special melting techniques. These techniques have included cold-mold arc-melting utilizing both consumable and nonconsumable electrodes, skull-melting, drip-melting, and levitation melting.' It has been recognized generally that the melting of both titanium sponge and titanium scrap would be expedited by the use of induction-melting procedures but the lack of a crucible capable of containing molten titanium without objectionable contamination thus far has prevented the use of induction-melting procedures. An extensive investigation: which included the common refractory materials was not successful in developing a satisfactory crucible for induction-melting. Some success in induction-melting has been attained with the use of a graphite crucible material, but in all instances sufficient carbon contamination was encountered to cause an appreciable reduction in the optimum mechanical properties of the titanium or titanium alloys. These investigations"" report an increase in the carbon content from approximately 0.3 to 1.0 pct. A serious reduction in the tensile and forming properties has been observed as a result of this carbon contamination. The development of a satisfactory induction-melting procedure for titanium without undue contamination undoubtedly would have considerable economic significance. Such a process would be particularly useful in melting the large quantities of low-cost scrap now available that can only be reprocessed at considerable expense and difficulty by the more elaborate techniques referred to previously. In addition, the process could provide a satisfactory method of melting and alloying of bri-quetted sponge for forging ingots.

Construction of the Ranger uranium project, located 230 kms east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, Australia, commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was A$407 million, made up of A$125 million in cash to the Federal Government and the issue of 125 million A$1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of A$16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd. (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd. (EZ). ERA's cash requirements to complete the project were estimated in October 1980 to be A$553 million. Project loans, secured by first ranking debenture stock, were arranged for a total of US$390 million, while second-ranking debenture loans totalling A$60 million were [ ] obtained from the vendors, Peko and EZ. Overseas participants (power utilities who had agreed to purchase uranium yellowcake under contract) arranged to take up 25% of the equity capital for A$102.5 million; Peko and EZ were allotted 30.5% each as satisfaction of vendors' consideration; and 14% representing A$57.5 million was issued to Australian residents in an underwritten public flotation in November, 1980. The loan and equity financing arrangements required the successful resolution of many complex and interlocking factors, including technical and economic feasibility, agreement with Aboriginal interests, compliance with Government policies, and securing of sales contracts.
