High-viscosity water injection has been proposed for use in reservoirs containing high-viscosity crude oils. Previous publications have largely ignored the possible effects of the connate water on the proposed process. This paper describes experimental work which indicates that the connate water will be forced ahead of the injected water to form a bank of low-viscosity water. This decreases the oil recovery which would be expected if such a bank were not formed. These effects are shown for a range of fluid mobilities and connate-water saturations for a five-spot injection system. In general, oil recoveries using viscous water are significantly greater than for untreated water even though they are less than would be expected if no connate water bank were formed. INTRODUCTION The effect of mobility ratio on the oil recovery of wa-terfloods has been known for many years. Muskat first pointed out that the fluid mobilities (k/µ) in the oil and water regions would affect the performance of the water-flood, and he estimated the general effect of these variables.' Since this early work, studies of the effect of mobility ratio on secondary recovery have been reported where mathematical,' potentiometric3 and scaled flow models' were used. These studies have shown that a reduction in the mobility ratio between the oil and the displacing fluid would cause additional oil recovery when water-flooding reservoirs containing viscous crude oils. Studies reported by Pye- nd Sandiford 8 have indicated that chemicals to increase injection water viscosity are now available and can be used to reduce the over-all mobility ratio of a waterflood. Where mobility ratios are controlled by the injection of viscous fluids, the connate water of the reservoir can play an important part in the displacement of the reservoir oil. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the connate-water saturation in waterfloods where viscous waters are used for injection. DISPLACEMENT OF THE CONNATE WATER Russell, Morgan and Muskat7 were the first to recognize the mobility of connate waters in waterflooding. They conducted waterfloods on oil-saturated cores containing 20 and 35 per cent irreducible water saturations, and found that from 80 to 90 per cent of the "irreducible" water was produced after only one pore volume of water was injected. However, their experiments were conducted at rates of flow significantly higher than those ordinarily occurring in waterfloods. Also, the cores were only from 4.0 to 8.5 cm long. Brown 4 studied a 100-cm linear sand pack which had been prepared to contain connate water and oil. He used 140- and 1.8-cp oils with injection water of essentially the same viscosity as the connate water. He found that all of the connate water was displaced by the injection water in both cases. However, the injection volumes required for complete displacement of the connate water were considerably higher in the case of the more viscous oil. To verify the results of the foregoing experiment, a 10-ft-long linear model was constructed by packing 250-300 mesh sand in a 1/2-in. diameter nylon tube. The model was evacuated, saturated with a brine of 1-cp viscosity, and flooded with a 41-cp mineral oil to the irreducible water saturation of 10.9 per cent. The model was then waterflooded by the injection of a water solution which had an apparent viscosity of 42.6 cp. The solution consisted of 0.5 per cent methylcellulose in distilled water. The viscosities of the oil and connate water were measured with an Ostwald viscosimeter. The viscosity of the polymer solution was calculated by Darcy's law using pressures measured during actual flow conditions. The ratio of the mobility in the oil region to the mobility in the inject ion-water region was approximately 0.32. The mobility ratio of the oil region to the connate-water bank was approximately 14. The mobility ratio between the connate-water bank and the injection water region was 0.024. Approximately 84.5 per cent of the recoverable oil was produced before water breakthrough. Immediately following breakthrough, oil and connate water were produced at an increasing water-oil ratio until the viscous injection water broke through. The construction of a new breaker at the Cranberry Colliery, Hazleton, Pa., was forced upon the operators, A. Pnrdee & Co., by a fire which destroyed the entire plant early in January, 1896. The loss included, in addition to the breaker, three boilerhouses and three engine-houses. The boilers were not injured, but the steam-pipes and connections were all broken and warped by the fire. The boilers were probably saved from injury by the presence of mind of the fireman., who started all his feed-pumps and filled the boilers with water. The hoisting-engines were more or less warped and cracked, but by patching and replacing the injured and broken parts, they were made to do satisfactory service in the new plant. It may be worthy of mention that the wrought-iron shaft of one of the hoisting-drums, 12 inches in diameter by 17 feet long, was so heated in the fire that the weight of the drum caused it

Thai means free. Historically accurate, as the country has never been subjugated by foreign occupation, the name "The Land of the Free" also seems to fit the attitude of the people. At the Bangkok airport, without so much as a kopkhun (thank you), travelers are found behind, beside and in front of ticket counters. A pretty Thai face on TV calls flights in English and Thai. Baggage disappears with alarming rapidity and your reporter and spouse despaired of ever being reunited with it. But at the entrance, all the parts came together and there was even a limousine from our hotel, The Oriental. Driving downtown English style, we noted that there were four lanes of traffic occupying the space we would allow for three lanes. Motorcycles and enclosed three-wheel motorcycle taxis were much in evidence, but the occasional water buffalo held up the slow lane. In the city, men wore European-type slacks and shirts but the women were colorful in traditional ankle-length wraparound skirts.

The fire-clays of New Jersey belong in two geological ages, the cretaceous and quaternary, or post-tertiary. Three very small deposits of plastic clays have been discovered within the limits of the Archæan rocks. These are not refractory and of little importance, excepting in a geological consideration. They have resulted from a decomposition of the feldspars of the rock in situ, and they have been classified as inferior kaolins.

Early in the last century, Isaac Tyson, Jr., of Baltimore, was a miner of ores of chromium, iron and copper, and a manufacturer of their products. He was first to erect in America, for the reduction of copper-ore, a German blast-furnace, which was copied largely, and the improved successors of which are now universally used in this country. Dying in 1862, he left his manufacture of alkali bichromates to his eldest son, Jesse, while his work in the departments of mining and smelting descended to his second son, James Wood Tyson, the subject of this notice. The father had mined chrome-ores in Maryland and Pennsylvania and manufactured their products at Baltimore; he had mined and reduced copper-ores in both these States; iron-ores at Tyson Furnace in SW. Vermont, and copper-ores in the northern and central parts of that State. Among his holdings was what later became the Ely mine, now called Copperfield. The son extended this work to central Georgia, and carried the family mining interests to the Pacific coast, where he took up chrome-mines in Oregon and elsewhere, as far south as southern California. On December 3, 1900, in the 73d year of his age, James Wood Tyson passed away, in his native city of Baltimore, charging his third son, James Wood Tysou, Jr., with the labors which, 38 years before, his father had resigned to him. THIS paper presents evidence of the general occurrence of methane in a large number of the coal fields of the United States and substantiates the apparent unnecessary differences in the ventilation requirements and codes in the various states, as was brought to the attention of the Committee on Mine Ventilation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at its Pittsburgh meeting in October, 1925, by J. A. Garcia.1 The data in his report have been compiled from the files of the Gas Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and represent samples collected throughout the various states and submitted for analysis by its engineers, also by mine operators and State mining departments, since 1911. Several thousand analyses were available but most of them were rejected because they represented abnormal conditions, undefined place of sampling, special investigations, or duplications in the same mine. Only those samples were included which, without reasonable doubt, were ascertained to fall within three major classes, namely, main return, air splits, and face and rooms of live workings. In the case of air splits, and face and room samples, only the one which contained the highest percentage of methane found in a given mine was taken.

AT A MEETING of the Shareholders of the Russo-Asiatic Cons. Ltd., in London, Oct. 23, 1922, LESLIE URQUHART, chairman of the com- pany made the following statement:* I come now to our recent negotiations with the Soviet Government and to the agreement which has resulted from them. You will remember that the conference at The Hague broke up without having achieved anything very definite. It was not, however, a failure. It elicited from M. Litvinoff an offer which will, I think, come to be regarded as a milestone in the progress of Russia from a ruinous and unpracticable Communism towards a modified form of capitalism. The offer made by M. Litvinoff at The Hague amounted in effect to this: that in return for political recognition on our part the Soviet Government would first acknowl-edge its liability for Russia's national foreign debts, and, secondly, would give the original foreign owners of property in Russia effective compensation. A very great advance that. It showed-and there have been many other signs to confirm it-how real and persistent has been the internal evolution of Russia during the past year from Marxism to the economics of the Western world. I will not now detain you with the reasons why M. Litvinoff's highly promising and significant offer came to nothing. The fact that it had been made and the further fact that The Hague Conference had separated indefinitely were the important things. The first fact seemed to indicate that the Soviet rulers, after all, proved to be people with whom one could do business. The second fact rather emphatically showed that the way to do business with them was not by unwieldy poly-glot conferences of ministers, officials and experts representing a few dozen different governments and a few dozen different sets of national interests. That method had been tried at Genoa. It was tried again at The Hague. Each time it failed, and having failed it left the road clear for a simpler and more direct approach.

A meeting of the Board of Directors was held in the Council Room of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Interior Building, Washington, D. C., on Friday, June 21, 1918, at 4 p. m. Twelve members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and nine guests were present. Upon the petition of 28 members of the Institute residing in or near Washington, D. C., a Washington Section was authorized. A committee was appointed to nominate officers and prepare a set of by-laws. The report of the Treasurer was presented in writing, accepted, and ordered filed. Thirty-nine members, 12 associates and 8 junior associates were elected. Two members were reinstated. One resignation was accepted. The dues of 64 members were suspended on account of their being on active war duty.

TWO intermediate phases enter into equilibrium with the primary solid solutions of titanium.' The TiMn2 phase was identified by Wallbaum2 as of the C14 type isomorphous with MgZn2. Contrary to Maykuth, et al.,¹ the phase occuring at about the 50-50 atomic proportion has been shown to derive from a peritectoid reaction.:' A 30 day anneal at 900°C of an alloy containing 52 wt pct Mn developed sufficient of the new phase to give a clear and predominant diffraction pattern. The powder pattern was taken in a 14 cm diameter powder camera using filtered Cu Ka radiation. In all, 75 lines were recognized and measured. Interplanar spacing and observed intensities for the first 26 of these are given in Table I.

Phosphorus combines with copper in various proportions, forming true alloys, some of which are of commercial importance. These materials find wide application as deoxidizers and as a means of introducing phosphorus into other alloys, as in phosphor-bronze. Phosphor-coppers containing 10 and 15 per cent. of phosphorus are the commercial grades that are most generally offered. Each has certain advantages when used in making other alloys. The 10 per cent, grade of phosphor-copper has an advantage over the 15 per cent. in that it has a much lower melting point and can be prepared by certain methods with a much lower loss in phosphorus. The 15 per cent. grade has the advantage of lower freight rates per unit of phosphorus and, by the method to be described, a uniform product can be prepared with practically no loss of phosphorus. Alloys of copper and phosphorus containing any desired percentage of phosphorus lower than 15 per cent. can be prepared by melting together the requisite amounts of copper and 15 per cent. phosphor-copper. Processes for making phosphor-copper may be divided into two classes as follows: (1) Those depending on the smelting of phosphate rock or superphosphate of calcium with copper or copper-bearing materials, and coal or other carbonaceous material; (2) those depending on the direct combination of metallic copper and elemental phosphorus. A number of formulas for preparing phosphor-copper according to the first method have been published. The Metal Industry' gives the following: Superphosphate of calcium, 60 lb.; granulated copper, 30 1b.; finely powdered coal, 10 1b. Similar formulas are given by Brannt2 and others, and detail variations are covered by patents, such as those of L. A. Jeffs3 and H. A. Webster.4 Among the objections to this method of producing phosphor-copper are the large amounts of raw material and resulting slag to be handled, and the difficulty of getting a satisfactory fusion. GEORGE F. BECKER Dr. George Ferdinand Becker, notice of- whose death appeared in the May Bulletin, was born in New York City Jan. 5, 1847, the son of Alexander Christian Becker, member of a Danish family, and Sarah Cary Tuckernian Becker of Boston. Dr. Becker was the last member of the group of distinguished geologists who, in 1879, were associated with Clarence King at the time of the organization of the United States Geological Survey. He was a leader in mining geology and geophysics, and for many years had been the chief of the Division of Chemical and Physical Research in the Geological Survey, and the investigations under his direction led to the establishment of the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington. Dr. Becker was a graduate of Harvard University and received the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Heidelberg, and in 1871 passed the final examinations at the Royal School of Mines in Berlin. He was for four years an instructor of mining and metallurgy in the University of California, from which he went to the United States Geological Survey. In 1896 he examined the gold and diamond mines f South Africa and at the time of the Spanish-American War was detailed to serve as geologist on the staff of General Bell with the army in the Philippine Islands. He died at his hone in Washington, D. C., on Apr. 20'.1

In an effort to improve coal-mine safety, a spectrum analyzer was used to make a detailed examination of the vibration frequencies produced by tapping a mine roof. We show that spectral analysis can be used to distinguish between "solid" and "drummy" roofs to a degree approaching that of the human ear, but it can reveal little about roof-slab thickness or attachment. We recommend research into the utility of augmenting human hearing in roof testing and into utilizing microseismic emissions to help assess roof integrity.
