FEW mining schools possess an art gallery and certainly none can equal the collection of paintings depicting the mineral industries now hanging in the comparatively new building of the School of Mineral Industries at The Pennsylvania State College. Dean Steidle, who conceived the idea, early this spring boasted of 55 paintings in the collection, by 24 different artists, the gallery being appraised at $18,000. Since then, eleven additional paintings have been added. Opportunity will he presented for an inspection at the meeting of the Industrial Minerals Division, to be held at the College, Sept. 24-26.

Galvanic contact, occurring between electrically conducting minerals in flotation pulps, may affect the nature of mineral surfaces and influence their floatabilities. Rest potential and galvanic current measurements were made on an electrode combination of pyrite and pyrrhotite under nitrogen, air and oxygen aeration conditions. The results were correlated with their oxygen-consuming characteris- tics and flotation behaviors. The galvanic contact improved the floatability of pyrrhotite, but adversely affected that of pyrite. Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy indicated that the formation of hydroxide or oxide and sulfate species of iron on pyrrhotite decreased, whereas that on pyrite increased when these minerals were held in contact. An electro- chemical mechanism was proposed for the observed behaviors.

LEHIGH UNIVERSITY On April 25, the Mining and Geological Society of Lehigh University held a meeting and elected. the following officers for the college year 1918-1919: C. S. SCHUBERT, President, C. G. GILMAN, Vice-president, H. TSAI, Secretary, E. D. HOLLINSHEAD, Treasurer, C. N. TOMLINSON, A. A. KORVES, Curators. After a short business meeting the Society was favored by three interesting and instructive talks. Mr. C. A. Bonine spoke on the "U. S. Geological Survey" and showed a number of beautiful lantern slides; Mr. R. Rosenbaum read a paper on "Geodes;" and Prof. B. L. Miller presented a brief discussion on "War Minerals." H. Hallimond tube flotation, contact angle measurements, electrokinetics, and electrode potential measurements have been used to investigate the natural floatability of molybdenite. The effect of surface pretreatment and the role of hydrogen, hydroxyl, molybdate, and calcium ions on the flotation of molybdenite has been studied. The surface potential of molybdenite has been suggested to be controlled by HMoO[ ] and MoO4= surface species whose properties are strongly influenced by pH. Calcium ions, which appear to be specifically adsorbed, are able to reverse the zeta potential of molybdenite. The experimental results have been analyzed in terms of the Derjaguin model of wettability, namely in terms of van der Waals and electrical double layer interactions and hydration effects at interfaces.

Minerals research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines embraces the mining and metallurgical problems of some 80 metals and nonmetals excluding the mineral fuels. It requires the energies and talents of about 1400 persons, almost half of whom are professionally trained in the physical sciences or engineering. Of approximately $13 million appropriated to the Bureau for minerals programs in Fiscal Year 1962, 76% has been allotted to technologic research and 24% to resources examination and appraisal. In addition, almost $2 million will be made available to the Bureau for minerals research from other Government sources and from private organizations that wish to utilize Bureau experience and capabilities in cooperative studies.

Past and present phosphate production in the central Florida phosphate district has been predominantly from the unique Bone Valley formation. As these lucrative reserves are depleted, production will shift to the Hawthorn formation in all areas, but particularly so within the southern extension, where vast potential reserves of low grade phosphates exist. Use of existing plants can be extended for some years by mining deeper into the underlying Hawthorn formation, and by mining previously ignored peripheral areas if erratic combinations of the two formations. Hawthorn Production, as compared to the Bone valley, will be characterized by lower grade; lower tonnage yield, lower pebble percent of product, higher mining ratios, higher slimes (- 150 mesh) content, and more complex mining and beneficiation problems. Geological control and more sophisticated operational procedure; will become increasingly more important as the lower quality reserves replace Bone Valley production.

Consideration has been given to the merging of a size reduction model and a mineral liberation model to permit prediction of mineral composition as a function of size. The results of this integration of size reduction and mineral liberation models are discussed from both theoretical and practical viewpoints using batch grinding data for a magnetic iron formation sample as a demonstration vehicle.

Previous studies have demonstrated the possibility of using aqua regia-extractable copper and zinc in plutonic rocks in exploration geochemistry. The present investigation compares this method of extraction with hydrofluoric-perchloric acid attack and bisulfate fusion in terms of precision and discrimination between high and low concentrations. Statistical treatment of data shows that the overall performance of the aqua regia method compares very favorably with other methods of attack.
