Catalytic purifiers are widely used as exhaust treatment devices on diesel equipment in confined spaces. The paper summarizes some studies carried out at the University of Lulea on diesel exhaust purifiers. The main purpose has been to elucidate important chemical activities of catalysts useful for the improvement of their effect. The effects of platinum catalysts on exhaust constituents such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, unburned gaseous hydrocarbons, and polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons are discussed. Also pointed out are the great differences in catalyst activity and advantages/disadvantages associated with the catalysts.

CREEP rupture characteristics of high purity Al-Mg solid solution alloys were studied by Mul-lendore and Grant' to investigate solid solution strengthening of pure aluminum and the accompany- ing effects on deformation and fracture characteristics. This paper presents the results of an extension of that work to A1-Cu and Al-Zn alloys to permit a comparison of the relative effects of the three solute elements on the high temperature strength and on the deformation and fracture characteristics. Experimental Procedure A total of nine alloys was studied. They were all made of ultra high purity aluminum alloyed with high purity copper, zinc and magnesium. The corn-

Freeport Indonesia, Incorporated produces 180,000 tons per year (200,000 STPY) of 32% copper concentrate. A 111 kilometer (69 mile) pipeline transports the concentrate slurry to the sea coast. Rheology characteristics of the concentrate slurry must be monitored continuously to assure that the pipeline does not plug and that mini- mum degradation of the pipeline occurs. Factors affecting the rheobgy include particle size, percent solids, pH, and reagent additions. This paper includes a general pipeline description, slurry rheology factors affecting operations, and the problems encountered and their subsequent resolution. Six years successful operation of the worlds longest copper concentrate slurry pipeline has provided a unique insight into slurry behavior.

There were present eight Directors, the Secretary and the Assistant Secretary of the Institute, and seventeen guests. Messrs. John V. N. Dorr and George D. Barron were appointed members of the Founder Societies Finance Committee on Joint Activities. A request from the New York members of seventeen societies that the Institute send a delegate to Engineering Congress for the purpose of formulating a code for professional conduct was referred to the Engineering Council. CYCLONE thickeners are "hydraulic centrifuges" designed either to produce a maximum practical separation between the water and solids of a feed slurry or to classify the slurry solids according to particle settling rate.
