In the course of an examination of some of the California hydraulic mines in November last, I visited the property of the Gold Run Ditch and Mining Company, near Dutch Flat, Placer County. This is one of the most important and extensively worked mines in the district. The gold occurs in the characteristic blue gravel, which averages 175 feet in thickness, the lower 40-60 feet being made rip of cement gravel, which resists the action of water, and can only he loosened by blasting. The specimen which I have the pleasure of laying before the members was presented to me by Mr. I. L. Gould, the intelligent superintendent of the mines, who informs me that he found it in the old river channel, about twelve feet above the bedrock. The flattened water-worn nugget of gold, about the size of a kidney-bean, is imbedded in blue cement gravel, around which quartz has crystallized. When found the projecting portion of the nugget was enveloped in quartz, the core of gravel and gold having only been discovered after breaking the lump of quartz. On the quartz there is a shell of cement. The specimen is a remarkable confirmation of the theory of the deposition of quartz from solution. DISCUSSION. Dr. T. STERRY HUNT, in commenting upon this occurrence, remarked that it is in accordance with what we already know of the recency of some of the quartz of this region, and cited the microscopic

The porosities of fractured limestone reservoirs can be divided into two broad types in accordance with their effects on fluid distribution and fluid flow. In the coarse porosity, gravity segregation lakes place freely and the resistance to fluid flow is very small. In the fine porosity there is no segregation and a high resistance to flow, and it has relative permeability characteristics similar to tight sandstones. By analyzing the affect of the two porosities it is concluded that in some cases to recover the maximum amount of oil it is necessary to remove large quantities of gas from the reservoir by producing at high gas-oil ratios. In this manner the fine porosity is drained of its oil and the gas-oil contact drops slowly permitting higher production rates from the oil leg. Since this conclusion is contrary to widely accepted principles of conservation, a mathematical model (Fig. I) was constructed to duplicate the conditions desired. The behavior of the model indicates that under certain conditions it is possible to recover more oil by producing at high gas-oil ratios than by production at low gas-oil ratios, and that the rate of production is affected more by gas shut-offs than by the decrease in pressure (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5). INTRODUCTION It has been noted that certain limestone reservoirs behave in such a way as to indicate that there are two distinct types of porous spaces available for fluid storage and fluid flow. Regardless of the nature of these porous spaces the distinguishing characteristic is that in one type of porous space there is definite gravity segregation between the oil and the gas; while in the other, the gas evolved tends to remain distributed equally throughout the reservoir. For the sake of simplicity the porosity in which gravity segregation takes place at a fast enough rate to affect the behavior will be called "coarse po- rosity", while that in which this is not so will be termed "fine porosity". The behavior of a reservoir of this type would be different than that of a sandstone reservoir, especially if most of the oil is in the fine porosity. Zinc metal production in the operating plants in the United States during 1948 was approximately equal to that of the year 1947, although new developments during the year assure higher output in 1949, if economic conditions are favorable. In the Western plants, the man-power shortage was almost completely overcome and new capacity has been or is in the process of being added to three plants; thus by December of 1948 daily zinc metal production had risen to the highest point since May of 1944 despite strikes in one large primary smelter and in one secondary plant.

Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. THE Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co., located in the Globe-Miami district at Inspiration, Ariz., became a producer of copper in 1915. From 1915 until 1948, 116,278,000 tons of ore were produced from underground workings by the block-caving system of mining. In April 1948, open-pit ore production from portions of the ore body was started and earlier plans for block-caving in these areas were abandoned. The change was due to economic conditions.

For the last 4 years political leaders have found a new subject on which they can safely generalize wihout creating opposition. That subject is commodity prices. Since the four-fold increase in OPEC crude oil prices, public attention has focussed as never before on the subject of commodity prices. To advocate stabilizing commodity prices is akin to supporting motherhood or peace or better schooling. Everyone gives lip service to the concept that stable commodity prices are desirable. It is easier to state the principle than to achieve it. Prices that are stable in terms of one currency may be clearly unstable in terms of a different currency. This has become a troublesome matter since 1971, when the world's leading trading currencies were set free to float in relation to each other. To illustrate: consider copper prices in the interval between the end of 1974 and the end of 1977. During those 3 years, the copper price in pounds sterling on the London Metal Exchange rose by 25 per cent. During that period, however, in terms of the USA dollar equivalent, the price was unchanged. And during that period, in terms of the German mark equivalent the price shrank by 13 per cent while the Japanese yen equivalent fell by 20 per cent. Thus a price that appears stable in dollars, rose in terms of pounds sterling and fell in terms of marks and yen. Had this result been achieved as a consequence of an international effort to stabilize prices, an American would have said the effort was successful. An Englishman would have said it had failed to prevent a price rise. And a German or a Japanese consumer would have been happy to have covered his copper needs at a lower cost in terms of his own currency.

THE bauxite deposits in central Arkansas were formed by weather¬ing, in early Eocene time, of fresh or kaolinized nepheline syenite above the water table in a subtropical climate of fairly continuous moisture. Four types are recognized: (1) residual bauxite deposits on kaolinized nepheline syenite, (2) residual deposits on kaolin and bauxite detritus, (3) alluvial deposits of sorted pebbles and pisolites of early Wilcox age, and (4) rubble deposits of later Wilcox age. All were invaded by kaolin and siderite during subsequent burial by Eocene sediments. PART I-FIELD RELATIONS OF THE DEPOSITS The Arkansas bauxite region for years has produced about 95 pct of the domestic supply of bauxite of the United States and it contains today reserves of more than 40 million tons-nine tenths of the known domestic reserves. During World War II, the Arkansas bauxite deposits were explored jointly by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Some 6000 holes were drilled by rotary rigs under contract to the Federal Govern¬ment, which resulted in the discovery and delimiting of approximately 20 million tons of ore in place. Detailed study of the many sections cored through the bauxite, of data from a much greater number of drill holes made available by all the operating companies, and of the extensive mine faces exposed in the strip pits, has yielded valuable geologic information about the origin of the deposits. It is now possible to piece together a paleotopographic picture of the deposits and the now-buried land surface on which they formed. The bauxite region in the center of Arkansas (Fig 1) contains two producing districts: one in Pulaski County, just south of Little Rock, and the other in Saline County, about 15 miles to the southwest. The deposits in both districts are associated with hills of nepheline syenite, bosses of a large batho¬lith that was intruded into Paleozoic rocks and later buried beneath coastal plain sediments deposited during Cenozoic time. The folded Paleozoic rocks are exposed in the northwest half of the state and are covered in the southeast half by the nearly flat-lying coastal plain sediments. The older rocks were intruded by nepheline syenite, probably in Late Cretaceous time, and sub¬sequently were eroded so as to expose the top of the batholith. In Paleocene time, marine limestone and laminated black silty clay of the Midway group were deposited in an advancing sea, and covered all but the most elevated parts of the batholith. I then suggested that a more attentive examination of the heavy sands left in the sluices of hydraulic washings would in all probability detect diamonds, mingled with other rare species not commonly believed to have occurred in these sands. Mr. George A. Treadwell, of San Francisco, has lately sent me a small package of these sands, collected by him from the sluices of the "Spring Valley Gravel Mining Claim," Cherokee, Butte County, California. INDEPENDENTLY of the recognized chemical reactions involved in the production of metallic zinc, the process is affected by physical conditions in efficiency, and by commercial as well as technical economy. To offer some observations concerning these conditions is the purpose of the present paper. Among the important elements of this problem is the physical nature of the particles constituting the mass of zinc oxide to be reduced. This may be the result, either of the manner of the original deposition of the mineral, or of the treatment to which it has been subjected in the roasting-furnace. The physical character of the reducing-agent is another important factor, since the carbon of some coals is much more active in reduction than that of others. The degree of fineness, whether of ore or coal, or both, likewise plays a significant part. These factors, together with the physical admixture of foreign substances with the ore, may give rise also to chemical "side-reactions," sometimes hindering or retarding, and sometimes accelerating, the reduction. Finally, thermal conditions, including the relative conductivity of the materials, deserve to be taken into account. In firing a furnace with retorts charged with a mixture of roasted ore and coal, the first reaction is naturally the boiling-off of the contained water ; the next is the distillation of the light hydrocarbons from the coal; the next is the reduction of the iron oxide to protoxide and sub-oxide successively, and then to metallic sponge; and the final reaction is the reduction of the zinc oxide in the ore by the carbon to metallic zinc. The Courtland-Gleeson area is in Cochise County about 15 miles east of Tombstone in southeastern Arizona. Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. The Precambrian is repre-sented by the Pinal schist. Paleozoic rocks include the Cambrian Bolsa quartzite and Abrigo limestone, Mississippian Escabrosa limestone, and the Permo-Carboniferous Naco Group limestones. Rocks believed to be of Triassic and/or Jurassic age include the Copper Belle monzonite porphyry, Turquoise granite, and Gleeson quartz monzonite. The Cretaceous is represented by andesitic volcanics and various sedimentary rocks. Tertiary rocks include the intrusive and extrusive Sugarloaf quartz latite porphyry and numerous dikes of various rock types. Quaternary conglomerates cover the northern and eastern part of the area. The geologic structure is extremely complex. All rocks as old as early Tertiary have been involved in either tilting, normal faulting, high angle reverse faulting, imbricate thrusting or folding and overfold-ing. Major deformation was initiated during the first half of the Tertiary. Northeast-southwest compres-sional forces caused thrust plates containing lower Paleozoic rocks to override Cretaceous rocks. Subsequently, two large slide blocks of lower Paleozoic rocks, acting under the influence of gravity, moved eastward. The imbricate structure and the gravity slide blocks were then broken by late Tertiary normal faults. INTRODUCTION The Courtland-Gleeson area, or Turquoise Mining District, has long been recognized as an area of extreme structural complexity. Gilluly 2 referred to the entire district as a "gigantic thrust breccia". In 1962, Bear Creek Mining Company completed a two year program of detailed geologic mapping supported by exploration drilling. The purpose of this paper is to present some of the results of this investigation and to provide a structural interpretation based on these results. The geologic map that accompanies this report is generalized and shows only the major and significant features. The area was initially mapped on aerial photographs on a scale of 1 in. equals approximately 500 ft. These data were transferred to a planimetric base using a vertical sketch master. LOCATION The Courtland-Gleeson area is in central Cochise County, about fifteen miles east of Tombstone, and about twenty-two miles northeast of Bisbee in southeastern Arizona (Fig. 1). The area is readily accessible over graded gravel roads from both Tombstone and Elfrida. GENERAL GEOLOGY Rocks exposed in the area range in age from Pre-cambrian to Quaternary. wilson3 and Gilluly2 have published very detailed descriptions of the principal rock units exposed in the area. Only a summary description is provided in Table I. A great number of previously unmapped narrow Tertiary dikes and small irregular masses of hornblende andesite porphyry, lamprophyre, and aplite intrude the Gleeson quartz monzonite in the western part of the map area. The scale of the map prohibits showing them. The aplite dikes are related to, and bear the same structural relationships as, the Sugarloaf quartz latite dikes found in this area. For that reason, and because both the hornblende andesite porphyry and the lamprophyre are post-mineral and post-thrusting, their omission from the map is not considered significant. Because so many of the contacts in the district are fault contacts, because bedding faults appear to be prevalent but are difficult to recognize and map, and because igneous intrusions are so common throughout the sedimentary section, it is virtually impossible to measure an exact total thickness of any of the sedimentary rock units. Nevertheless, neither the field mapping program nor the diamond drilling provided any basis for suspecting that the thicknesses of the sedimentary units are significantly greater or less than what might be inferred from surrounding districts.

Black: Bodies.-In the ordinary conception, a black object is an opaque object that reflects but little of the light that is incident on it. This means naturally that such an object is a good absorber of luminous radiation. The black body; which is so closely connected with high-temperature measurements, represents the limit in blackness of all black objects. It is a body that not only absorbs all visible radiations but also all other radiations in the infra-red and the ultra-violet regions of the spectrum which are incident on it. No substance is known that is completely black; platinum black, one of the nearest if not the nearest representative of the ideal, reflects 1 per cent. or so of ordinary visible radiation. The closest approach to the ideal is a small opening in the wall of a relatively large opaque cavity. Any radiation incident on this black body will be almost completely absorbed if the relative dimensions are properly chosen no matter what the material may be. The great difference between the blackness of such a cavity and of lampblack, for instance, will be apparent to one who makes the simple test. Non-black Bodies.-The field of non-black bodies covers all real bodies. Their characteristics are extremely varied. So far as absorption of radiation-is concerned, these bodies range practically from the almost completely black, platinum-black, and lampblack, which absorb all but a fractional part of 1 per cent. or so of the incident radiation, by an infinite variety of steps to freshly polished silver, which ordinarily absorbs only a few per cent. The exact percentage absorbed depends not only on the nature of the incident radiation, but also on the temperature of the body, the condition of its surface, the angle of incidence, the nature of the surrounding medium, and on certain other less important conditions. As consequences of these varied characteristics, we have not only the differences of color of ordinary objects, but also the changes of color that any one object undergoes on heating or when lighted front various directions. This complexity of the phenomena, in a way, is responsible for the meagerness of knowledge, regarding materials at elevated temperatures. Measurement of High Temperatures.-Excepting in cases where the thermocouple or the gas thermometer are applicable, in which case the temperatures obtained are true temperatures regardless of-the material" studied, high, temperatures are almost always, if not always, determined from measurements of radiation. In fact, determinations of temperature from this latter point of view are often so much more convenient than the thermocouple and especially the gas-thermometer determinations that, in the region where all of these types of measurements may be made, the radiation measurements are often preferred. This is true even though the temperatures usually thus directly determined are not the actual temperatures, a consequence of the sources of the radiation being non-black bodies; in other words, a consequence of being concerned with iron, or glass, or tungsten instead of small openings leading to relatively large-cavities uniformly heated. Coordination of Experimental Results.-In order that data on iron, glass, tungsten, or other non-black bodies obtained in one laboratory, may be, correlated with similar data obtained elsewhere, temperatures must be expressed on a common scale. The true temperature scale is the natural scale for this purpose it is ordinarily the scale to which all other temperatures can be most directly reduced. AS the end of the collegiate year approaches, the problem of student employment again becomes acute. This subject divides itself into two phases: (1) employment prior to graduation and (2) employment following graduation. "Experience is the best teacher," according to the old adage, and the student needs all that he can get. He is afforded every opportunity to reap from his books the theories and principles of scientific and engineering practice, and occasionally he is privileged to make field trips to observe the practical side of the subject. But it is not enough for one to know the theory and to observe its application; it is also desirable for the student to get the feel of the tools during his training Such opportunities can only be afforded the student if the major companies cooperate with the universities in giving the student part-time and vacation work.

In the last ten years large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now-prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. In the last ten years, large gains have been made in the field of blasting. These gains have been both in the theoretical and in the practical application of explosives. One of the most publicized changes in the practical application of commercial explosives is the now prevalent use of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. The new water-compatible mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT should also have a large field of application. Most of the theoretical gains have been concerned with the actual rock breakage obtained with explosives. EXPANDING-GAS-BUBBLE THEORY There has been an outstanding change in the conception of how an explosive produces rock failure. The early theory which explained rock breakage was correct for some of the first force-producing agents such as quicklime. When a drillhole was filled with quicklime and water added, the material expanded and steam was generated. The expanding material and the steam exerted a slowly increasing pressure on the sides of the drillhole. The force broke the rock by splitting. Because a great quantity of gas was produced by the deflagration of gunpowder, the same process of the gas pressure splitting the rock was assumed to take place. Even after 80 years of use, the rock-breaking action of all high explosives was thought to be caused entirely by the expanding gas bubble which tore and split the rock. Fig. 1 shows a vertical section through an exploding spherical charge of high explosive. It illustrates the early theory which attributed the entire breakage to the expanding gas bubble. The basic idea of this theory is that the breakage started at the explosive charge and progressed toward the free face. REFLECTED-WAVE THEORY me expanding-gas- bubble theory has gradually been replaced by the reflected-wave theory. The reflected-wave theory explains rock failure by explosives in the following manner: The enormously high gas pressure in the drillhole produces fracturing of the rock on the sides of the drillhole. The fracturing around a 1 1/2-in. diam drillhole is usually confined to an area with about a 6-in. diam. In the fractured area, the pressure of the gas is reduced until the force on the walls is no longer capable of fracturing the rock. Although the gas pressure does not continue to fracture the rock, the pressure imposes a high impact stress on the wall rock. In addition, a pressure or seismic pulse is produced in the rock. The pulse is probably entirely a compression pulse when originally produced in the rock. But, with distance, part of the energy of the compression pulse is transformed into a tension pulse which follows the compression pulse. The explosive charges and burdens used in conventional mine blasting are such that the tension pulse of the original wave is probably too small to be considered in a practical evaluation of the theory. The compression pulse is transmitted through the rock with no associated fracturing.

The removal of mine-water by hoisting in tanks instead of pumping, while somewhat a reversion to the methods of the ancients, has come very rapidly into favor in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the past few years. In fact, so much so, that at the present time there are at least eight large collieries at which all the water is hoisted, and six more plants are in preparation. The particulars of the plants in operation and under construction, as far as decided on, are given in the tables on pages 107 and 108. Besides these, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western R.R. Co. is constructing a hoist of large capacity for a depth approximating 500 feet, to be located in the Keyser Valley, near Scranton. The hoists will be driven by electric motors, geared directly to the sheaves. The Lehigh Valley Coal Company is planning a large hoist for the Packer collieries in the Shenandoah district, but no work has been done on this as yet. The earliest regular hoisting, I believe, mas done by means of semi-cylindrical tanks (Fig. 1) at the Nanticoke collieries of the Susquehanna Coal Company. These tanks were attached under the regular shaft-carriages, taking in water through six large clack-valves in the bottom, and discharging through an endgate opened by a lever which was operated by a guide-piece on the shaft head-frame. These tanks were designed July, 1880, by the late J. H. Bowden, one of the very early members of the Institute. Similar tanks are still used in emergencies at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 shafts of the company. The objections to. their use were: that water could only be hoisted during the night-shift, or when the shafts were not in use for hoisting coal, thus requiring a very large sump, and greatly limiting the water capacity of the plants; that the alternate wetting and drying

It is now three years ago that I wrote a paper on the fire which broke out in October, 1880, at the Chrysolite mine, Leadville, Col orado, of which I was at that time manager. The paper was read by title at the Harrisburg meeting in 1881, and was accompanied by plans and sections fully illustrating it. It was written to invite a general discussion of the course pursued in the management of that fire, since the various fragmentary and sometimes prejudiced or inaccurate newspaper accounts were not suitable to base judg ment on. The paper I offered, gave the facts as they appeared in the contemporaneous record which I had kept. At that time, a dif ference of opinion had arisen with an adjoining mine, as to possible damages entailed through the fire; and a law suit was talked of. In view of these circumstances, the President of the Chrysolite Company advised a temporary withdrawal of my paper. Somewhat later, I withdrew it entirely, because of the unlooked-for delay in * arranging the controversy referred to. It. has now, indeed, been amicably settled; but the lapse of time has deprived the matter of much of its immediate professional interest. To the urgent request of some of the members, that I should, at least, give a description of the fire- and gas-proof bulkheads employed, I yield with some hesitation, since I lay no claim whatsoever to orig inality in these devices, and therefore question the value of such a paper. The fire originated by accident, in the Chrysolite, a mine comprising extensive and more or less irregular workings, containing immense quantities of timbering, but partially packed with waste rock or earth. ONE'S JOB is the watershed down which the rest of one's life tends to flow write the Lynds in the first pages of their classic social study, "Middletown in Transition." Certainly engineers will confirm this statement after a check among those in their own profession with whose lives they are at all familiar. I have no hesitancy in acknowledging the truth of their observation for the men and women who are engaged in the profession of the law. It has been often remarked that American public life is overrun with members of the law profession. The highest public office in the land, that of President. has been occupied by lawyers almost to the exclusion of citizens of any of the other professions. Twenty-two Presidents of the United States out of the total of 31, were members of the bar. For the most part, members of Congress, the governors of the states, the state legislators and the mayors and other local leaders, men who occupy important positions of responsibility and public trust, have had legal training. Now this fact is no mere accident. Those who were fitted for the "job" of the practice of the law are favorably placed with respect to their participation in public life. Thus public service and public office is the watershed down which the "lawyer's" life tends to flow.
