OF all the metals that have from time to time been called the "Wonder Metal," mercury, often called quicksilver, is probably the most deserving of this designation. A wonder metal it must have been to those workers of an earlier day who named it after that Latin god of commerce and gain, characterized as the fleet messenger of the gods and the conductor of souls to the lower world. The word mercury has been used to indicate a carrier of tidings, a bearer of news, a nimble or clever person, a hawker, and a skillful thief. All of these attributes, and more, are recognizable in this metal, the technical terminology of which is "Hydragyrum," meaning water-silver, and from which the chemical symbol "Hg" is derived. Fickle in its occurrence in nature, simple in its metallurgy, illusive in captivity, it serves man in life or death, in war or peace, in commerce, science and arts, in mining, agriculture, and forestry with a versatility found in no other element.

ALTHOUGH the open-hearth charge contributes CO, C02, H2, A and water vapor to the combustion gases and absorbs oxygen from them, in the main the thermal effects in the melting charge and molten bath can be considered independently of those in fuel combustion; the latter then is regarded simply as the source of the net heat required to finish a heat of steel. First of all, it should be remembered that a large percentage of the heat supplied to the bath is furnished by oxidation of the various elements in the charge itself. If this charge consisted of 80 to 100 per cent of hot metal and the oxidation were accomplished by blowing in air or oxygen, as in the bessemer converter, the net heat absorption would be negative; that is, the bath would contribute part of the heat required to keep the melting chamber hot, in addition to that contained in the finished steel and slag. In actual open-hearth practices, probably the nearest approach to this is in the duplex furnace, charged with bessemer-blown metal and some hot metal, where very little heat is required to complete the refining and nearly all the heat energy from fuel combustion is used to keep the roof and walls of the melting chamber up to around 2900 to 3000 F (1600 to 1650 C), so that the bath will not cool off during the refining. The other extreme is with all-cold charges containing around 80 per cent steel scrap and 20 per cent cast iron or cold pig iron, in which case a very large proportion of the heat in the bath at tap is supplied from the fuel combustion. THERMAL EFFECTS IN MELTING In a typical heat, the fuel furnishes about four million British thermal units per ton of steel produced. The heat required, for the metallurgical processes is not easily defined in useful manner but it ranges downward from about one million Btu, depending not only on the charge but on the manner of calculation. Roof bolter occupations in underground coal mines continue to experience overexposure to respirable dust. One potential source of dust in roof bolting operations is the exhaust from the roof bolter dust collection system. A wet exhaust conditioner (water box) has been developed to reduce dust emissions from the exhaust of the vacuum dust collection system on roof bolting machines. The exhaust conditioner consists of a muffler chamber and a water chamber with four internal partitions to direct airflow over the surface of the water. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a series of laboratory tests to assess the respirable dust capture ability of this device as compared to the standard exhaust muffler. To determine the dust collection efficiency, both devices were placed in the exhaust stream of a simulated roof bolter dust collection system. Gravimetric samplers were operated upstream and downstream of the exhaust conditioner and muffler to evaluate the ability to capture both respirable coal and limestone dust. Researchers observed a 41 % reduction in dust concentrations for the water exhaust conditioner in the laboratory configuration. Significant levels of dust deposition in the sampling chambers may have contributed to this effective capture rate.

The Texas Panhandle produced 18,677,000 bbl. of oil in 1932 as against 25,064,000 in 1931. The decline was caused by smaller market demand, since the Railroad Commission potential increased from 105,528 to 149,260 bbl. during the year. Expiration of leases was one reason for a greater number of dry holes through forced drilling of questionable areas. The small number of gas wells reflected the influence of the business depression upon industrial and domestic gas demand, together with difficulties of franchise negotiations or pipe line extensions under present conditions. Probably much of the gas-well drilling was done on expiration leases, or to protect against drainage, and equalize withdrawals as between the various units held by each gas pipe line company. The increase in average initial daily production was due chiefly to excellent granite wash wells in the LeFors district developed by the Texas Co. and Skelly Oil Company. In the Panhandle district, comprising a major anticline with almost a million productive gas acres, the pools tend to merge in time, the development being confined to more productive areas. Hence separation into pools becomes a matter of time of development with some effort to keep dolomite, archosic and granite wash production separate. Many pools, like the Finley and Bowers, have mainly one type, but many leases and even individual wells produce from two zones. MACHINERY has not taken the place of manual labor in steep pitch coal in the anthracite field and there is a shortage of miners experienced in this type of work. To overcome these difficulties several coal companies have resorted to different types of mining such as the diamond or zig-zag method, the slant method, long hole drilling, and several other variations. For the past 5 years the diamond shape method has been used extensively in the heavy pitching beds of both the Knickerbocker and Yatesville basins at Knickerbocker colliery of the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Co.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1300 tpd by October 1, 1964. Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1400 tpd and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1100 tpd due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January 1968, was mainly massive sulfides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, Copper, zinc, and minor amounts of lead sulfides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (average specific gravity of 3-8). From January 1968 until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulfide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite with some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. James C. M. Li (United States Steel Covp.)—The author has discovered a single analytical relation between the minimum, or the steady-state, creep rate and the applied stress confirming a statement made earlier by orn" that such relation should exist and should reduce to the power law at low-stress levels and to the exponential law at high-stress levels. However, as pointed out by the author, all the available theories of creep are not adequate to explain such a single relation. Inspired by such a statement, I have made a suggestion concerning a possible explanation13 of the new relation. This is based on the concept that the rate-controlling step is the cooperative motion of a short dislocation segment. The nature of and the reason for the cooperation have been discussed13 as well as the reason why the motion of the dislocation could be controlled by the mobility of the short segments. A natural short segment has been proposed13 to be the node formed at the intersection of two dislocations. The reason why the node may contain only a few atoms has not been discussed and the application of the proposed model to all the metals and alloys reported in this paper has not been attempted. It seems appropriate to include these in this discussion. The model was partly inspired by the substructure recently observed in the electron microscope on creep specimens. One such example is shown in Fig. 48 in Darken's Campbell Memorial Lecture. The substructure is a collection of dislocation intersections and irregular networks. No pileups have ever been observed in such specimens. A closer look at the network indicates that one set of dislocations is more straight than the other set sug- gesting that the other set may be mobile in the plane of the net. Since, for the network to survive the creep deformation, some dislocation reaction has to take place at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations, the mobile dislocation, even if it can slip in the plane of the net, will have difficulty in moving at these intersections. To illustrate, an idealized network is shown in Fig. 9. The thin lines represent the set of dislocations which are mobile and can slip in the plane of the net except at the nodes which are formed at the intersection of the two sets of dislocations. The other set of dislocations, represented by the thick lines, may have a Burgers vector which is not parallel to the plane of the net, and therefore may be immobile. Because of this nonparallel Burgers vector, the Burgers vector of the node, which is avectorial sum of the Burgers vectors of the two sets of dislocations, will also be nonparallel to the plane of the net. Therefore, the node cannot slip in the plane of the net and the set of mobile dislocations will have to drag the node along as indicated in Fig. 9. Now the problem is how many atoms could be involved in the nodes. Exact calculation of the length of the node is a difficult task especially since the length should be a steady-state length and not an equilibrium length. An estimate of the equilibrium length can be made by balancing the line tension of all the dislocations. The results would be a small fraction of the length 1 between nodes as shown in Fig. 10. In some instances such a calculation shows that the node will not be formed. But, since the calculation is only approximate, it does not rule out the possibility of the formation of a short node. NO matter what position we hold, workman, foreman, superintendent, manager, president, or what not, let us fail to give or to make good products, then see how quickly we'll be called to account for- our work by the buying public. The waves of progress taught us that millions were wasted in unnecessary strikes-we also learned that many losses were due to neglect on the part of manufacturers to give the same consideration and attention to the human element of their factory as they gave to their machinery. The employees learned also that the employer was their agent who found purchasers for the product of their labor. So between the two we learned that many years of labor were needed in order for a worker to recover his wasted savings, or for the manu¬facturer to replenish his loss. Treat 'em rough, and tell 'em nothing, was not very far from the true relationship between management and employees in manufacturing plants in the early days. Today just exactly the opposite views are held by executives whose function is the handling of employees. Men today want to know what it is all about. They are intelligent enough to comprehend the facts, and to use them constructively, and it is good business to give them the information.

A Discussion of the Paper of Prof. Howe. (Bi-Monthly Bulletin, No. 14, March, 1907, pp. 169 to 274.) P. H. DUDLEY, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The characteristics of Prof. Howe's metallurgical papers are, that he is able, from the mass of confusing evidence on the subject, to make an analysis and present hypothetical and essential principles in concrete form for consideration and discussion. I can appreciate, from the practical side of the subject, the arduous labor of collecting and investigating the data that is essential to prepare the paper. Much of the data necessarily came from material of preceding years. of manufacture in which there was allowed time for chemical reactions of the recarburizer, and for the elimination of the oxidation-products before teeming the ingots. This condition gave a favorable tinge-element to free the metal from slag- and other impurities, but, in allowing the. ingot to cool before charging in the furnace, the time-element entered as a detrimental factor in the development of the pipe or shrinkage-cavities, which gave an ingot-structure deficient in soundness. The interpretations from such material must be made with due allowances for the methods of manufacture, and must be given proper weight, as general facts, in subsequent arguments. The difficulties under which investigators labor are not easily surmounted in differentiating between reliable and unreliable data incident to variables of methods of manufacture, chemical composition of the alloys of steel, mediocre practice and that of the highest state of the art. DURING 1939, 286 by-product coke ovens were completed and put into operation. These included 140 Witputte ovens for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp., at Gary, Ind.; 61 Koppers-Becker ovens for the Ford Motor Co., at River Rouge, Mich.; 65 Semet-Sotvay ovens for the Great Lakes Steel Corp., Zug Island, River Rouge, Mich.; and 20 Curran-Knowtes ovens for the Midwest-Radiant Corp. plant at Mitlstadt, Ill. The Millstadt plant is unique in carbonizing a washed coat containing 3.50 per cent sulphur. The gas contains approximately 2500 grains sulphur per 100 cu. ft.; this is successfully removed with sodium carbonate solution by the Seaboard liquid purification process. The coke is intended primarily for use as a smokeless domestic fuel in the city of St. Louis.

THE oil-producing territory of Peru is confined to the province of Tumbes and the department of Piura, located in the extreme northern end of the republic and adjacent to the southern border of Equador. The first real production came from Zorritos field, located on the shore line and in the province of Tumbes. The production of this territory was soon exceeded by that of the Negritos field, also located along the shore line and in the northwest corner of the department of Piura. Talara, lying a short distance north of the original or early producing area was made the shipping port. This field was developed by the London Pacific Petroleum Co.; it is now-operated by the International Petroleum Ltd. (Toronto, Canada). A little later, the Lobitos field came into prominence; it was first exploited by the Lobitos Oil Co. At present, it is operated by the British Oilfields Ltd. This field is located between Talara, on the south, and Zorritos, on the north. It is now the second largest producing area in the country, the Negritos being by far the largest both in area and production. In other parts of Peru, there have been periods of desultory prospecting, particularly in the department of Puno. This work was carried on in the surrounding region of what,is locally known as the "Pirin" field, developed by the Brown Brothers. It lies between Juliaca, a railway junction point and Lake Titicaca. No favorable results from the latest prospecting have been reported. During the past few months, an opinion has been expressed in various journals that it is doubtful if commercial production will be found in the high plains of the Lake Titicaca region. It is, however, due to the Peruvian oil industry to remember that the Pirin field, although covering but a small area, was a fair producer even under adverse circumstances. If the author's interpretation of the geology of the Titicaca section is correct, certain sections of the high plains will be found to be commercially productive, not-withstanding the unfortunate geographical position from the standpoint of transportation; or its elevation.

Pore formation is examined analytically in cellu-larly solidified single crystals, in cylindrical castings of pure metals and alloys, and in unidirectionally solidified castings. Effects are considered of fluid flow. dissolved gas, and surface tension. Experimental results show that flow through a partially solid "mushy" aluminum alloy obeys relations similar to those applicable for flow through other types of porous beds. Flow rate is proportional to the square of the fraction liquid (fL) for fL less than 0.3. Results indicate models chosen for mathematical description of pore formation in alloy solidification are valid. ONE of the solidification variables which is influential in determining mechanical properties of castings and of wrought material produced from cast ingots is porosity. This porosity may result from shrinkage, dissolved gases, or a combination of both, and may take the form of either macroscopic pores in localized areas of the casting or microporosity evenly distributed throughout large areas of the casting. In alloys which freeze over a range of temperatures some microporosity is generally found after solidification. There has been much discussion as to whether the micropores are caused primarily by shrinkage, by gas, or by a combination of both.'-3 There has, however, been little experimental or analytical work performed to delineate the relative contributions of shrinkage and gas in causing microporosity or to quantitatively describe the influence of processing variables on microporosity. Porosity other than microporosity (e.g., center line shrinkage) has also received only limited quantitative treatment.495 The aim of this work is to examine analytically the general problem of pore formation in solidification and to perform limited confirmatory experiments. Consideration is first given to shrinkage porosity in pure and nearly pure metals (shrinkage in cellular growth, centerline shrinkage in cylinders). Next, a discussion is given of formation of shrinkage-caused microporosity in unidirectional solidification and in "mushy" solidification. Finally, influences of dissolved gas and surface tension on microporosity are examined. Numerical results are given for aluminum and an aluminum alloy. Typical examples of microporosity are shown in Figs. 1 to 3, for 1) cellularly solidified aluminum, 2) sand-cast aluminum alloy, and 3) low alloy steel. SHRINKAGE POROSITY IN PURE AND NEARLY PURE METALS 1) Cellular Growth. In cellular freezing of an impure liquid, liquid grooves may exist over a considerable length of the growing crystal.6 The cross-sectional area of the grooves decreases with increasing distance from the cell tips; the root of the groove is blunt if the liquid at this point reaches eutectic composition. As a result of volume contraction during solidification, flow occurs down the groove, parallel to the growth direction; hence, there must be a pressure drop from the groove entrance to points within the groove. The geometry of the groove is simplified to that of a circular cylinder of radius r and length L, Fig. 4, L » r, and a simple and useful limiting case is obtained. This is that, in the circular cylinder freezing at constant velocity, the pressure at the root of the groove is lower than that pressure at radius r in grooves of other geometries where r decreases continuously to a lower limit at L. THE year 1923 has seen new developments in the only French wells, i.e., those of Pechelbronn, Alsace. The output of the two pits now in operation totaled more than 75,000 tons, although there was a two months' strike. It is expected that 1924 will see an output of 85,000 tons; and 1925, 100,000 tons. A new pit has just been put in operation (fourth pit; the third not being in operation). The oil and the oil sands are extracted at a depth of 350 meters. Special attention has been given to the development of the distillation and refinery plants, particularly the manufacturing of lubricating oils. The present output of the lubricating-oil factories is approximately 20,000 tons neutral oils; 20,000 tons spindle oils, together with 2000 tons of paraffin. Engineers are introducing the most modern American processes of refinery and distillation. The company has 3000 employees. The capital of the company has just been increased from 45,000,000 francs to 81,000,000 francs. Some other drilling has been done in the Auvergne and Landes districts, and some oil has been found, but in too small quantities for commercial operation. Great hopes, however, are entertained of finding large quantities of oil, and the French Chambers have voted a special fund of 20,000,000 francs for investigating oil in France. Much work has also been done in the Colonies but without much success; oil is found in different districts of Tunis, but in relatively small quantities. In Morocco, drillings have not been successful. A prospecting mission recently returned from Madagascar gave an optimistic report concerning the oil conditions on the Island. Prospectings are being made also in French Indo-China. The present domestic yearly consumption is about: Gasoline 750,000 metric tons, kerosene 70,000 metric tons, automobile lubricating oil 75,000 metric tons.

THOSE acquainted with the fundamental differences between the, educational .systems of Great Britain and. the United States would hardly expect .the training of men for the petroleum industry to proceed along the same lines- in the two countries. The youth entering an English university is, except in the case of-the student from some of the British colonies or from foreign countries, almost invariably a product of the English "public school." This is in no sense comparable .with the American public school. It is a private institution, frequently of considerable age and heavily endowed. In many aspects it seems to be comparable with the American preparatory school. Yet to some extent its activities remind one of the first years of the undergraduate: course in the American college. Certainly it takes to-itself many of the social, functions of the American college.

An analog computer model has been developed of a large, walking dragline. This model permits changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, to be readily investigated on a computer. As a result, it is possible to determine ways of improving the dragline performance without having to carry out many expensive experiments on the actual machine. This model can also be used as a simulator for dragline operator training. INTRODUCTION The movement of large volumes of material is always a costly operation and the increasing trend towards the use of large capacity equipment does not necessarily produce the economy desired. This problem is of particular concern to the mining industry in its open-pit operations where large draglines are used to remove the overburden. Since this operation often forms a very large part of the total cost of open-pit mining it is particularly important that it be kept as economical as possible. This requires that the dragline be operated at its maximum possible productivity. In order to optimize the operation of a dragline it is desirable that a suitable model of the dragline be available for study. Once such a model is available the effects of changes in the configuration of the dragline, or changes in its digging cycle, could be readily investigated on a computer and methods of improving its performance could be determined without having to carry out expensive experiments on the actual machine. Such models would be of use not only to dragline users, but also to the manufacturers of draglines for design purposes. Presumably studies of this type could eventually lead to computer-con trolled stripping operations. As far as can be determined very little work1'2 has been done on the derivation of dragline models. Such models must be derived before work of the nature indicated in the previous paragraph can be carried out. As a small contribution to this field this paper describes work that has been carried out by the senior author during the past few years on the derivation of one such model. This model describes the drag, hoist and swing operations of a 35 cu yd, commercially available, walking dragline. This model was derived for use with an analog computer and can be used either for optimization studies, or for the training of dragline operators. DESCRIPTION OF DRAGLINE General: The particular dragline for which an analog computer model was developed is owned by the Great West Coal Company of Estevan, Saskatchewan. The paper has two parts: the field argument and the microscopic argument. The field argument indicates that either the deep chalcocite has replacea sulfide of extraordinarily easy replaceability or it is hypogene. The microscopic argumentindicates that this sulfide, if it existed, must have been hypogene bornite; that this bornite must so excel known bornite in replaceability as to constitute a new variety; that the existence of this new variety is wholly unsupported by evidence; and that the deep Butte chalcocite is therefore hypogene. IN 1900, when the public first heard of "secondary enrichment" the Butte chalcocite seemed clearly supergene. Mining, through successive regions of leached capping, bonanza sulfide, and sulfide less rich, had paused at lean bottom levels which, though chalcocite-bearing, suggested the waning of copper. The deepest chalcocite, at 1500 ft., was yet too shallow to disturb the supergene hypothesis. But, with deeper mining, lean levels yielded to fat ones. Here and there they showed, within the same vein, an inverted distribution, chalcopyrite above and chalcocite below. To the miners' astonishment, they carried chalcocite, unaffected by cross faults, on an independent course to the depth of 2500 ft. The pattern of ore distribution, hitherto revealed only in fragments, was now appearing in perspective, and, in the depth of the chalcocite, was beginning to make Butte differ from all districts where the chalcocite is indubitably supergene. The idea of hypogene origin at length came into favor; by 1913, when Sales1 advocated this origin, the argument had become a powerful one. This argument rested on field evidence; but, already, there was beginning to emerge microscopic evidence not included in this arugment. Especially pertinent was the proof that (1) The deep chalcocite lies in-mixed with bornite, often microscopic; (2) the deep chalcocite often replaces bornite; and (3) replacement of bornite by chalcocite is accom-

IN the United States, improvements in methods of combustion have made possible the use of the smaller sizes of anthracite. This coal is now being reclaimed from the culm banks accumulated by the miners in the more prodigal years. To-day the freshly mined "slush" is segre¬gated and stored against the time when, through briquetting or some other means, it may be utilized as a commercial fuel. For many years Europe has achieved enviable results in the conservation of her small coal by briquetting. This profitable industry, first placed on a commercial basis in France in 1842, has grown to such magnitude that the "'production during 1913 exceeded 36,000,000 short tons. Briquets produced in Great Britain are used principally for steam purposes and the greater part of the output is either exported or taken by the Admiralty. On the Continent the briquets are sold in all branches of the coal trade. The French railways consume from 16 to 40 per cent. of their fuel in briquet form, and in Germany the lignite briquets, (of which 20,000,000 tons were produced in 1913) are as familiar and interesting to the American traveler as the huge porcelain stoves in which they are burned. It is not strange, therefore, that aggressive and far-sighted promotors heralded this means of converting our ubiquitous coal waste into revenue. To the superficial student the briquetting process seemed so simple as to make success easy. It is for this reason principally that the path of the industry in America has been strewn with failures. The rash enthusiast had either not worked out the mechanical problems involved or had failed to grasp the local conditions under which the briquets must be made and sold. It may be confidently stated, however, that in spite of the many vicissitudes through which it has passed, coal briquetting is now an accomplished economic success in this country, and as a profitable adjunct to the coal industry it has come to stay.

A NEW record-a quarter million students in the engineering schools of the United States and Canada-has resulted from the great demand for engineers following World War II. The figures released by the American Society for Engineering Education and which appeared in detail in the Journal of Engineering Education for January 1948, show that, on Nov. 1, 1947, 252,250 students were studying engineering in 149 engineering schools of both countries. There are 244,390 in the 143 schools canvassed in the United States, and 7860 in six schools in Canada.
