Results of a Debye-Scherrer X-ray investigation are given which show that the order-disorder transformation is a first-order or heterogeneous reaction in Cu-AU alloys with compositions near CuAu. Evidence was found for conventional tie-line segregation across a usual type of two-phase field separating the ordered and disordered fields in the Cu-Au equilibrium phase diagram. The horizontal and vertical widths of the two-phase fields are about 3 atomic pct and 20°C, respectively, at 43 and 54 atomic pct Au. No evidence for the existence of an ordered structure based on a stoichiometric composition of Cu3Au2 could be found. ALTHOUGH the modern theories relating the de-Agree of order of binary alloys to temperature and composition have met with considerable success, the nature of the transformation from the disordered state to the ordered state and vice versa has never been well understood. It has been assumed by some' that this is a second-order transformation, that is, a homogeneous change of state. Others2 hold that the transformation is first-order and that the effects characteristic of heterogeneous phase transformation apply. Since this subject is discussed in detail in a recent paper,' the arguments will not be repeated here. The present paper summarizes an experiment which was designed to distinguish between these two viewpoints for the case of Cu-Au alloys near the composition CuAu. The Cu-Au system is an important one because it furnishes prototype alloys, the behavior of which has formed the basis of much of the present-day order-disorder theory. It has recently been shown- hat in alloys near Cu3Au there is a temperature range within which the ordered and disordered states coexist in equilibrium and are distinguishable as separate phases. Therefore, the transformation must be first-order for these alloys. A similar demonstration for alloys near CuAu, however, has been lacking. Experimental Method Essentially the experiment consisted of equilibrating Cu-Au samples at various temperatures, quenching them in water to retain the high temperature states, and then examining them at room temperature for the coexistence of the ordered and disordered structures. The thermal gradient method of heat treatment- as used because it was important that all temperatures over the transformation range should be represented in the test. Briefly, this method consisted of holding a wire of the desired composition, sealed under vacuum in Pyrex, in a known temperature gradient for a long enough time to allow each part of the wire to assume the crystal structure characteristic of the temperature at which it was held. The temperature gradient was produced by inserting into an ordinary wire-wound cylindrical laboratory furnace, an 18 in. length of 1/8 in. ID ceramic tube which was heavily wrapped with asbestos. The furnace power was controlled by a Tag-liabue Celectray controller and a chromel-alumel thermocouple with the junction located on the heating elements. During the equilibrating treatment the widest variation of temperature within the gradient tube was approximately 4°C at the highest temperature. The rate of formation of silicon monoxide from silica spheres has been measured at 1500°C in H2, H2-H2O, H2-He, H2-Ar, and CO-CO2 gas mixtures. Indications are that in the hydrogen-containing gases the reaction rate is mainly determined by convective diffz~sion. In the CO-CO2 mixtures the rate approches a constant value which is independent of sphere diometer (and gas velocity). This suggests that a surface reaction becomes rate controlling in CO-CO2 gas. WHENEVER silica is exposed at elevated temperature to a strongly reducing atmosphere there occurs, inevitably, a volatilization of silica by the formation of gaseous silicon monoxide. Because of the importance of this reaction in metallurgical processes and laboratory experiments, its kinetics were studied in the present work. EXPERIMENTAL The spheres made of vitreous silica were suspended by a molybdenum wire in the hot zone of a gas-tight high-purity recrystallized alumina furnace tube of 3.1 cm internal diam and 100 cm length. Molybdenum wire resistance heating was used. A purified H2, H2-H2O, H2-He, H2-Ar, or CO-CO2 gas mixture was passed through the tube, from top to bottom. The amount of silicon monoxide formed was determined by weighing the silica balls before and after the experiments. The silica balls were made from commercially available translucent fused quartz glass. In experiments with hydrogen-containing gases the silica stayed vitreous during the experiment, whereas in experiments with CO-CO2 mixtures, which were performed over longer times, the balls were always crystallized to cristobalite (as determined by X-ray examination) at the surface. Constant-pressure head capillary flowmeters were used to control the composition of H2-He, H2-Ar, and CO-CO2 gas mixtures. The oxygen and water vapor were removed from the gases containing hydrogen by passage through columns containing platinized asbestos (450°C) and an-hydrone. The CO was purified from O2 and CO2 by passing it through activated copper (200°C) and through ascarite. The H2-H2O gas mixtures were prepared by passing purified Hz through a mixture of oxalic acid dihydrate and anhydrous oxalic acid held at a constant temperature in a water bath. The equilibrium water vapor pressures of oxalic acid dihydrate-anhydrous oxalic acid mixtures were taken from the available data.1 The furnace system was checked for sufficient gas tightness at regular intervals. As an additional check, the H2O and CO2 contents were measured in the exit gas and were found to agree closely with the metered contents when H2-H2O or CO-CO2 mixtures were used. When purified H2 was used, H2O pressures found in the exit gas were always below 0.1 mm Hg. These contents originate either from an incomplete reoxidation of silicon monoxide in the cold part of the furnace or from small leaks which cannot be avoided. If the latter is the case, such small uncontrolled H2O contents decrease the partial pressure of SiO in equilibrium with SiO2 by less than about 7 pct, which is considered small in comparison to other experimental uncertainties. The temperature of the furnace was controlled automatically in the usual manner. The reported temperature was measured with a Pl-Pt/l0pct Rh thermocouple and was accurate to ± 5°C. TRANSPORT-CONTROL LED RATE OF REDUCTION The gaseous convective diffusion from the surface of a sphere can be predicted from the semiempirical relationship obtained by Ranz and Marshall2 in a study of the evaporation of water and benzene drops in air. [ ] We at The Dow Chemical Co. have recently done some work on the deformation of magnesium alloys and although it is far from complete there have been a few observations which may be of interest in connection with this paper. In the first place, I should like to point out that the deformation of polycrystalline magnesium alloys has not been completely explained by the work on single crystals. Bakarian and Mathewson found slip on the ( 101) and {002) planes, and (102) twinning as the deformation mechanisms in magnesium single crystals, but in compression when the (002} planes were within ii° of parallel t0 the compression surfaces, fracture occurred at all temperatures up to 340°C (644°F). In commercial working processes, particularly in rolling, an orientation is quickly produced which should be unfavorable to further deformation by the three established mechanisms. RECENT interest in germanium centers around its use as a semi-conductor of electricity in electronic devices. It is generally believed that germanium transistors, diodes, triodes, photocells, and rectifiers will largely replace the present-day vacuum tubes. The germanium electronic devices are much smaller, lighter, and more resistant to shock, and they require only a small fraction of current required for conventional devices. Hence only a small amount of heat is given off by the equipment. This development will require many times the quantity of germanium now being produced, which in 1948 was approximately 1000 lb' and was obtained almost entirely from zinc ores in Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma. No one knows with certainty what the demand will be for ger-manium by 1956. It may be 40,000 lb.1 Known concentrations in zinc ores are not sufficient to

This paper does not pretend to advance any facts or improvements not known to many members of the Institute, but is intended merely to give a few practical hints on preliminary tests, and to call attention to a possible enlarged field for the cyanide process in the treatment of some silver-ores, which merits investigation. Broadly considered, the choice of a process for the treatment of silver-ores in Mexico is confined to the following alternatives: (1) Concentration for treatment by smelting; (2) milling and pan-amalgamation; (3) the patio and Ortega process; [4) chloridizing roast and lixiviation; (5) chloridizing roast and cyaniding; and (6) cyaniding of the crude ore. These methods of treatment may also be combined, and cyaniding or concentration, or both, may be introduced, at what-ever stage it is found to be most advantageous. The characteristics of the ore (especially its gold-content) and local conditions, such as distance from railway, cost of fuel, amount of water available, vary so much that it is impossible to make general comparisons between the different processes, either as to extraction or cost. Concentration and subsequent smelting may be made very expensive by long-distance transportation of concentrates; pan-amalgamation is undoubtedly expensive; and the patio process is barred when the ore contains appreciable amounts of gold, by reason of its poor extraction of that metal; yet there are many ores for which each of these processes is especially adapted, and the expense of treatment is compensated by the results obtained.

Rimming steels derive their name from their action during solidification in the molds. As a result of incomplete deoxidation, gas is evolved during freezing, and the metal has a characteristic rolling action. The metal rises along the mold walls and descends in the center of the ingot. This action keeps the top of the ingot open and the advancing rim of solid metal can be seen. The rim grows until the rolling action is insufficient to prevent the top of the ingot from freezing or until the action is stopped by capping the ingot with a heavy plate. The violence of the reaction and its characteristics, such as growth or drop in the molds, are determined by the composition, the furnace practice, and the deoxidation in the ladle and in the molds. Though rimming steels represent a large proportion of the amount of plain carbon steel made, they have received comparatively little attention in the technical literature. The manufacture of rimming steels has been described by Hibbard,1,2 Fleming,3 Pierce4 and Jackson.5 The reactions occurring during rimming have been considered from the theoretical point of view by Chipman and Samarin.? The structure of rimmed-steel ingots has been discussed by Nead and one of the present authors6 Meyer: in studying segregation, investigated the distribution of carbon, sulphur and phosphorus in rimmed-steel ingots by analyzing the rim and core of blooms. In their studies of segregation, the Joint Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute and the British Iron and Steel Federation9 studied distribution in one billet and one ingot of rimmed steel. A detailed study of the distribution throughout the ingot has not been published. The present investigation was undertaken to determine accurately the distribution of carbon, manganese and sulphur in normal rimmed ingots and the general distribution of other common elements present. The study included some work on the effect of pouring conditions and furnace practice on the distribution, though there is still much to be done in this direction. The structure of a rimmed ingot that has been split by dynamiting and a schematic diagram of the zones in the ingot are illustrated in Fig. 1.

Forecasts of future timber consumption in soft-coal mining are handicapped by the lack of adequate experience records for estimating properly the timber requirements of the industry. Data were obtained from plants where records are kept or from operators who collected the information and to these were added composite figures for the continental United States in 1905 and 19191 and for central and western Pennsylvania and for Illinois in 1922.2 The result, representing slightly over 928,000,000 net tons, is shown in Table 1. Some of the companies furnishing data were unable to segregate the timber into classes of use but for those who did, Table 2 shows the board feet of posts and cross ban used per ton of coal mined and the percentage of the total timber consumed that was used in roof support. So far as we are aware, the technical literature contains no data or discussions on this subject, except two referencesl,2 of a general character. It is apparently a question that every one concerned, producer and consumer alike, has been willing to evade as far as possible. Various theories as to the cause of the deterioration have been given but such checking of these theories as we have done indicates that there was no sound basis for most of them. This work on the galvanizing of malleable was first undertaken in 1916, and has continued until the present time. We now feel that for all practical purposes we have reached a solution and are glad to be able to offer it in a form that can be readily applied to production processes. It is impossible to give here a detailed account of the early work done on this problem. A great number of tests were instituted and an enor-

THE value of a mine is basically dependent on its capacity to yield profits. Since the ore must be mined, treated, and sold, some of it in various future years. there is a risk involved as to future costs, selling price, and working conditions. It cannot be expected that the economic condition existing at the time of valuation will continue unchanged for long periods in the future. During the past 20 years, mineral production in the United States has been conducted under a changing economy in many respects more exacting than that applied to other businesses. There have been increased production incentives, technical aid, exploration of privately owned mineral deposits by government at federal expense, and liberal loans for development and equipment, with risk partially assumed by government.. Some of these benefits have been counterbalanced by price ceilings, consumption controls, and stimulation of competition from foreign producers who have been offered the same advantages extended to American operators. For the present, mines will operate under a government policy directed toward reducing federal aid and control. The tenure of this change will depend upon future elections and the status of foreign relations. War and threat of war are now of the most vital significance to the mineral industries. Other factors which influence cost of production, markets, and price of mine output might be classified as Acts of God or Acts of Government. In some countries expropriation and the difficulty of exporting earnings or investment returns are risks that must be considered by foreign capital. Recognizing that this retards American investment in foreign countries, the Mutual Security Agency offers insurance against such expropriation and guarantees the convertibility of capital and profits. Since it is impossible to predict with certainty either cost of production or selling prices of metals for long periods, some assumptions must be made as to profits in the future. The basic assumption must be that the price of the company's product will vary in proportion to changes in operating cost. There is often a lag in this reaction, however, for prices of minerals are generally more sensitive to declines and less sensitive to increases than are costs. This reflects in part the resistance of labor to downward wage revision and a corresponding alertness in realizing its share of price advances. Some labor contracts include automatic adjustments to metal prices. Notwithstanding the complexity of the, problems involved and the difficulty of weighing their effect on value, such risks may be appraised with reasonable accuracy and a rate of earnings adopted that is compatible with the risk. It is, of course, possible to revert to a yardstick of value such as the commodity dollar, which has been advocated from time to time, but while revaluation in 1933 disturbed public confidence, the theoretical gold dollar continues to be the standard of greatest stability. Its gain or loss in purchasing power is reflected ultimately in cost of production and selling price of the mine product. At present 35 dollars are allocated to one ounce of gold. Measurement of Risk In the application of the Hoskold and most other formulae, a yearly dividend rate commensurate with the risk involved is set aside out of annual earnings. If the risk is great, this rate may be 15 to 25 pct of the amount invested. The remainder is placed in a sinking fund invested in safe securities such as high grade bonds or conservative equities, and the interest or dividends from these securities are added to the sinking fund. The sum of these sinking fund payments and the compounded interest at the end of the mine life is taken as the value of the mine. Admittedly the decision as to the size of the risk rate is the most difficult element in valuation and one requiring the most exacting consideration. It is necessary to look years ahead in an effort to determine future costs, market prices, demand, competition which may develop, including that of substitutes, and other influences common to the mine and to the region in which it is situated. Another phase of risk is the enactment of unfavorable legislation, taxes, and what appears to be an alarming spread of nationalization and expropriation. Capital is sometimes borrowed from the government to finance strategic production. Such loans may be collectable only out of production and involve no liability otherwise. Valuation in these cases must recognize the effect of such a reduction in liability. Offsetting some of these risks are the possibilities of mechanization and other cost-reducing discoveries, improvements in mining and treatment methods, new uses for minerals and metals, and normal growth of markets. In this paper, the terms risk rate, dividend rate, and speculative rate are synonymous. Safe rate and redemption rate are also used interchangeably. These alternatives are used here because they are commonly found in the literature on mine valuation. In Michigan, the State Tax Commission has long employed a risk rate of 6 pct in its valuation of iron mines. There the outline of reserves is well established and operating costs and conditions are based on adequate experience. The following comment on rates appears in the report of the Minnesota Interior commission on Iron Ore Taxation submitted to the Minnesota Legislature of 1941.1 Most engineers agree that 7 percent for the specu-lative rate is "an absolute minimum". IN the recent world-wide deflation of commodity prices the coal industry, including both anthracite and bituminous coal, had reached a level where the actual delivered market prices received by the operators were usually less than the cost of production. Many steel companies and public utilities, operating their own "captive" mines, could have bought coal during the past three years for less money than the true cost of coal produced at their own properties. Competition within the coal industry itself was cruel to the point of profitless operation, and the competition of other forms of fuel was bearing heavily on the coal producers. They were thus forced into methods of production and utilization that they had hitherto ignored; there had been almost complete absence of any appreciation (by the bituminous operators especially) of the necessity of real research work in finding better methods of preparing coal for specific uses, and in finding new and profitable uses for different kinds and grades of coal.

URANIUM ore was first discovered in the Edge-mont district of the southern Black Hills in the summer of 1951. The discovery was not made known for some time, but after the news leaked out prospecting became intense, and several hundred claims were staked in the spring of 1952. The Hot Springs Sub Office of the Atomic Energy Commission was established at that time and airborne radiometric surveys were commenced by the Government and by private companies. During the succeeding summer another important discovery was made by private airborne surveys in the northern Black Hills, and the area favorable for uranium ore was expanded many times. Between that summer of 1952 and the present, many individuals and groups have explored, developed, and exploited their claims until now uranium ore is produced in significant quantities and substantial reserves have been developed. The Black Hills portion of the geologic map of the U. S. issued by the U. S. Geological Survey is shown in Fig. 1. Sedimentary formations are exposed as a series of cuestas and hogbacks in a roughly annular pattern with the older sediments resting on the pre-Cambrian core, which is exposed in the eastern and southern portions of the dome. The South Dakota-Wyoming state line bisects the area from north to south. The Cheyenne River crosses the southern tip of the Black Hills and the Little Missouri bounds them roughly on the north. Headquarters of the AEC in the Black Hills is the Sub Office at Hot Springs, S. D. An ore buying station is located in Edgemont, 28 miles to the southwest, where a mill is presently under construction. The area of original uranium ore discovery and of principal activity in the southern Hills is a few miles north of Edgemont. Several areas of anomalous radioactivity have been noted between Dewey, S. D., and Newcastle, Wyo. A limited amount of ore has come from the Dewey area and private exploration is active there. The Carlile deposit, largest producing mine in the northern Black Hills to date, lies northwest of the Belle Fourche River near the western extremity of the Hills. Two of the larger known orebodies of the area are located near the Little Missouri River where a small window exposes the favorable strati-graphic horizon of the Fall River sandstone. Small production has recently come from Barlow Canyon, near Devils Tower, Wyo., Fig. 2, and numerous areas of anomalous radioactivity are known in the vicinity. (communication to the Secretary*) :-The very interesting results obtained by Prof. Hofman and his assistants came to my attention when I had temporarily assumed charge of the metallurgical department of the Missouri School of Mines, and had found it, pending the completion of a new building, lacking a furnace in which to roast ore preparatory to the customary lead blast-furnace run. An attempt at lime-roasting had been already determined upon, but the use of a charge which would make a slag of definite composition was a new idea. The results following were obtained by Messrs. Aubrey Fellows, J. C. Long, E. R. Wash, and Dr. T. C. Tseung, under my supervision. It is regretted that the data are not more complete; but the work was done simply incidentally to securing the desired ore for the blast-furnace, with no idea of obtaining any results of especial interest. It is submitted because of the metallic lead obtained, no notice of which has been seen elsewhere. The ore was an aggregate of several lots of concentrates, apparently from Missouri ores. The analysis follows, with that of the limestone and sandstone used, as far as made:. Ore, SiO2, 3.04; Fe, 0.77; CaO, 2.53; Pb, 68.74; Zn, 5.77; S, 13.9 per cent.; limestone, SiO2, 1.0 ; CaO, 54.35 per cent.; sandstone, SiO2, 99.8 per cent. The converter was made in the shops from a sheet of No. 14 iron riveted in the shape of a truncated cone, 20 in. in diameter at the top, 15 in. at the bottom and 22 in. high. DETERMINATION OF SILICA OXIDE iron ores usually are found in intimate association with silica and phosphorus compounds. Their quantitative separation and purification sometimes present difficult problems to the chemist. Silicic acids may represent various degrees of dehydration. They are exeedingly weak, but combine with metallic oxides and form some of the most stable oxides in nature, the silicates. When iron ores are treated with hydrochloric acid, they yield practically all their iron. However, apart from rare exceptions, varying amounts of insoluble residues of silica, alumina, lime, magnesia and compounds of phosphorus, sulphur, titanium, chromium and others will be left. If the oxides of silicon, aluminum and titanium are present in small quantities, the insoluble residue is generally very small, but the presence of these oxides is more usual in larger quantities. Therefore, only a special treatment can break the bond between these elements. Ore Residues Acids remove the soluble constituent of the ore, leaving the insoluble residue, which chemically is rock or gangue and must be treated accordingly. Alkali carbonates are used frequently to break up the residue, but other fluxes have also been recommended, such as a number of lead and boron salts. The introduction 0f these salts, which offers certain advantages, requires, however, their removal before the other constituents can be analyzed, and this elimination is sometimes difficult. Usually in quantitative analysis silicates are dissociated by fusing them in a platinum crucible with sodium carbonate, thereby forming sodium silicate, Na2SiO3, sodium aluminate, Na2Al204, sodium titanate, Na2TiO3, and carbonates of other elements. All the carbonates are soluble in hydrochloric acid, but also some silicic acid is formed that must be rendered insoluble. To this end the solution is evaporated several times, as the first evaporation still leaves as much as 5 per cent of the silica soluble. Even after a number of evaporations, minute quantities of silica may be found with the iron and alumina present. Perchloric Acid as an Agent for Dehydrating Silicic Acid Perchloric acid, HC104, (60 per cent), has been used for years as a solvent, but few chemists have used it to dehydrate silica. THE increased demand for iron ore has necessitated a re-examination of ore-bearing lands on which the presence of water previously has indicated hazardous and expensive operating conditions. In view of the importance of iron ore production to the national economy and defense, the Ground Water Branch of the U. S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the state of Michigan, began a study of mine drainage in the Iron River district in 1945, and later extended the work to the Marquette district. The purpose of these studies was to define the principles involved in the movement of surface and ground water toward the mined areas, with the hope that the information obtained in the research would lead to the development of methods of water control and to a reduction in the total mining costs. Not only are the direct costs of drainage increasing, but also the indirect operational costs of working a wet mine are becoming a larger proportion of the total mining costs. For some wet mines the direct costs of pumping and drainage may range from 35 to 40Ø per ton of ore produced, but the indirect costs due to handling wet ore and controlling the water may be five to ten times this amount. The methods of study were formulated as the work progressed, and inasmuch as they were the first large-scale studies of their kind, they should serve as a guide for the solution of similar problems in other mining areas. The Iron River district was chosen for a pilot study because in this district the longest records of mine pumpage and water-level observations were available, including, as they do, the records for the Homer mine of the M. A. Hanna Co., where pumping from surface wells began in 1930. The results of the first investigation by the Michigan Department of Conservation have already appeared." The first section of the report on a similar study of the Marquette district, which was started in 1948, will be published this year. Methods of Study In an effort to reduce the flow of water into the mine workings in the Iron River district, about 4500 gpm was pumped from the bedrock being mined and about 9000 gpm from the glacial overburden. In the Marquette district in the vicinity of Ishpeming and Negaunee, about 5000 gprn was pumped from the bedrock and about 4000 gpm was pumped from the glacial overburden. Where the water was pumped only from the bedrock, the rate of pumping ranged from a few hundred gallons per minute in the dry mines to many hundred gallons per minute in the wet mines. In each district, pumping from the overburden was localized on a few properties where costly pumping installations had been made and the expenditures for power had been large. In each district a comprehensive ground-water investigation was made of the whole area, involving the collection and interpretation of all the available data bearing on the source and quantity of water to be controlled. Although it is not the purpose of this paper to discuss the methods of making a ground-water investigation, it should be pointed out that a drainage study follows a pattern of engineering analysis that determines the occurrence, source, movement, disposal, and quantities of water involved. The investigation in the iron-mining districts of Michigan began with the construction of a map of the buried bedrock topography. Because the ground-water reservoirs occupy the low points in the bedrock basins, this map gives information concerning their areal extent, depth, shape, and degree of interconnection. The depth to water in the drillholes and wells indicates the altitude to which the ground-water reservoirs are filled, and the logs of the material penetrated in the drillholes and wells indicate the general character of the materials filling the reservoir. The slope of the ground-water surface indicates the direction of flow through the reservoir, the water movement being from the points of higher altitude to points of lower altitude. The four new oil-field discoveries made in the East and East Central Texas districts during 1941 were the East Long Lake field, Anderson County; Pickering field, Shelby County; Pleasant Grove field, Rusk County, and Tri-Cities field, Henderson County. The discovery of oil production in the Pettit lime of the Lower Glen Rose was made in the Groesbeck (Barron) field in Limestone County and the Willow Springs field in Gregg County. Important extensions were made to the Pittsburg field, in Camp County, the Chapel Hill field, in Smith County, and the Hawkins field, in Wood County. The Hawkins field was extended sufficiently to more than double the number of proved surface acres. As usual the East Texas field led the district in the number of completions for the year. The second most active field during the year was the Hawkins field, with 250 new wells completed. The third most active was the Long Lake field, in which 50 wells were completed. Approximately 964 wells were completed in the district during 1941. Production and Probation The district is credited with having produced 163,566,695 bbl. of oil and distillate during the year. This represents a decrease of 4 per cent from the 170,424,685 bbl. of oil and distillate produced during the preceding year. The production of 130,378,620 bbl. of oil and distillate from the East Texas field represents 79.7 per cent of the total production of the district; that is, 6.3 per cent less than the production for the year 1940, The district had an estimated basic daily allowable of 614,982 bbl. of oil on Dec. 31. Approximately 33 per cent of the state's annual production was produced in the district, compared with 34.9 per cent for 1940. Since the majority of the fields in this district are subject to proration, any change in the annual production is attributable largely to changes in proration schedules and number of shutdown days. Fields subject to shutdown days were closed in for 113 days during the year, with the exception of the East Texas field, which was shut down 111 days. An order was promulgated by the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission for encouraging the disposal of salt water and reservoir-pressure maintenance in the East Texas field. INTRODUCTION The toughest job for any mining company, large or small, is to locate and identify a property which it feels has the potential for development and which can be tied up through location, lease or option under terms within their means. In the case of a small company, this precludes grass-roots exploration with its attendant high costs and the extended time required to develop a prospect to the point of being a project. The small mining company, therefore must limit its search to known properties which, for various reasons, have been shut down or were never thoroughly developed at the time of discovery. These types of prospects are located either through literature search, familiarity with many mining areas in general, or through contacts and submittals from a variety of sources. In order to develop a marketable presentation to any investor, the basic requirements are the same: - the property must demonstrate the potential to provide a satisfactory return on investment - the evaluation study must be thorough and professionally developed. In order to promote any mining property, it is first necessary to know what you have. INFORMATION DEVELOPMENT We normally begin with a detailed literature search of the district, assembling all available data on the basic geology, production records, and old reports of this or neighboring properties and any other information which can be found. This will aid in the general understanding of the basic geology and hopefully allow a fairly detailed knowledge of the specific occurrence. With this information one can begin to speculate on the reserve potential and develop some high and low figures for estimating purposes as to mining method, production rate, metallurgy and begin developing estimated capital and operating costs. Cashflow runs are developed for varying tonnages (high and low), estimated high and low grades of metal and at differing market prices for the product. FINANCE CONTACTS Brooks Minerals, from its inception, has been an operating company and we have been able to assemble a small but experienced operating staff. For this reason we try to put together projects and joint ventures where we can be the operator and maintain a certain degree of control. Whether due to familiarity with many colleagues in the mining industry or due to unfamiliarity with the banking houses and securities markets, the approach to raising finance has generally been to contact the established mining companies. This requires a familiarity with the corporate philosophies of these companies with respect to their development goals and financial capabilities. A common mistake is to shotgun the proposal to many companies of different sizes and goals in hopes that one might be interested. It is more beneficial, when possible, to tailor a proposal to each company, stressing the positive points where the specific proposal best meets their interests. One company may be more interested in a development program with fairly certain and conservative return potential. The property may well contain both possibilities but a lack of understanding of the individual company's method of operation could spoil the deal. In another instance, one company may look at a property as a moderate income producer over an extended life, yet a second may elect to high-grade the deposit over a shorter period in order to provide early cash flow or take advantage of a favorable market situation. DURING the first years of operation of the titanium and iron mine of the National Lead Co. at Tahawus, New York, efforts to increase production were hampered by the increased load put on the facilities for sharpening churn-drill bits. The ore and rock are extremely hard and abrasive and it was necessary to sharpen and harden a large number of bits per day to keep the churn drills supplied. Efforts to increase the capacity of the bit shop by a two-shift operation were not wholly successful in that it was hard to train men to do a satisfactory job of sharpening and tempering the bits. The number of bits that were improperly tempered increased, thus boosting the daily requirements for bits at the drills and increasing the load on the bit-sharpening facilities.
