INTRODUCTORY NOTE. THE research here recorded was undertaken early in the present year, and has been prosecuted steadily for about eight months. While the work has been under my constant supervision and advice, the labor has all been performed by Mr. Sadler, to whom is chiefly due the development of the successive steps which have led to the final result. The process is better than I dared to hope, and we are able to place at the command of chemists and engineers interested in the matter an apparatus of continuous and uninterrupted action, and methods of analysis by which the daily averages of the two variable and inconstant factors of illuminating gas, ammonia and sulphur, may be determined with all needful accuracy, even by those little skilled in chemical manipulation, and with very little loss of time. CURTAILMENT of production was a matter of far more serious concern to the oil industry through 1933 than the search for new supplies of oil. The huge reserves of crude, built up during past years, instead of inspiring a feeling of security, were viewed apprehensively. The status of past laws and court decisions seemed to guarantee to operators the right to produce oil at will, and this entrenched privilege was so widely adhered to that the market was-in a constant state of chaos. The more modern idea of the ownership of oil in place and correlative rights gained headway slowly, since usually there were enough belligerent producers, staunch believers in the old established order, to defeat the efforts of the majority who sought to' introduce order and restraint. State regulatory commissions were unable to cope, with the rebellion among producers with the result that those who abided by proration rulings were penalized, while those who flouted the rulings and produced unrestrainedly were able to make profits on large volumes of flush oil even at low prices. This situation, known in the vernacular as the "hot 'oil" problem, became so acute that the industry was threatened with ruin. The low price for 36c A.P.I. in the Mid-Continent came in April. at 25c per barrel 'but gradually moved upward to the long-hoped for price of $1.00 per barrel in October, after the Federal Government had taken a hand in the matter and effectively allocated production among the oil producing states and materially curbed the "hot oil" runs.

Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

THE search for potash salts in the great "Red Beds? region of the Southwest, conducted for several years by the U. S. Geological Survey, the work being carried on for a part of the time in coöperation with the Bureau of Economic Geology and Technology of the University of Texas, has resulted in the discovery, within shafting depth, of potash salts, apparently of workable thickness and commercial quality, and prob-ably of great extent. Definite information is lacking as to the exact thickness of the potash beds, the size and boundaries of the areas underlain by workable strata, and the locations of the deposits richest and most favorably situated for exploitation. Briefly to review the salient features, of the general situation: We have in the great Red Beds region of the southwestern United States, embracing portions of central Kansas, western Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico, and northern and western Texas, .a series of sandstones. shales, anhydrite beds, clays and limestones, which; through an interval of 1000 ft., more or less, carry beds of salt, estimated by Darton1 to contain over 30,000 billions of tons of rock salt. It is the greatest known salt field of the world. At some points the intercalated beds of rock salt, one of which is reported by the driller to exceed 300 ft. in thickness, aggregate, accord-ing to the drillers' records, over 1000 ft. The sedi-mentary strata are similar in composition to those carrying the potash deposits of western Europe, and they were laid down at the same time and under condi-tions which, in many respects at least, were similar The stratigraphy and character of the beds are des-cribed by Darton2 and a, part of the area and the reported aggregate thicknesses of salt are shown, with some revision after Darton, in the accompanying map Fig. 1. The assumption that in the great areas of shallow evaporation basins spread over -the vast base-level region of saline deposition in the Southwest during Permo-Triassic time, potash salts were in some places, and at different stages, thrown down in crystalline deposits associated with the beds of rock salt, anhydrite, and gypsum, is, geologically speaking, more than reason-able. They are to be expected, and the conviction that they are probably present has long been held both in the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology and Tech-nology, under Dr. J. A. Udden, and in the- U. S. Geological Survey. Accordingly, for many years, efforts to determine whether potash deposits are present in this region have been made, though under very great difficulties, such as insufficient funds for boring, hack of drilling on private initiative in the more promising regions, hack of interest at first on the part of the drillers and companies, and, hater, inadequacy both of the methods of boring and of the sampling, to reveal in definite terms the thickness-of any saline stratum of given composition.

THE nature of the decomposition reactions producing hardening in aluminum-rich A1-Ag alloys is now fairly well understood. The silver is not uniformly dispersed even at temperatures above the solvus line: rather, it is clustered into zones and associated with dislocations.' During quenching, nearly all of the silver segregates into zones' and some is attracted to dislocations, producing stacking faults. Growth of these faults produces the semicoherent y precipitate.1 During aging, the larger zones and the y precipitates grow at the expense of the smaller zones. The large zones persist up to about 350°C; where they redissolve in favor of the y' and y precipitates.' The equilibrium hcp y precipitate occurs both by a cellular reaction at the grain boundaries1 and by growth of the Y' plates to a critical size where incoherency results. Damask and Nowick 4 observed an internal friction peak in an A1-6 at. pct Ag alloy at about 140°C (0.25 cps). The peak was found to exhibit a systematic instability. After aging at successively higher temperatures between 155' and 23Z°C, the peak first migrated to higher temperatures while increasing in height, then returned to lower temperatures and decreased in height. After aging at temperatures above about 200°C, the peak position remained constant while the height decreased very slowly. In quenched specimens, elastic after-effect measurements inhcated a rapid initial transient in peak position from low temperatures up to 155°C. The authors concluded that a stress induced growth and resolution of the clusters and the 7' was the most reasonable mechanism to account for the behavior. It would seem, however, very unlikely that both the clusters and the y' precipitate would provide damping contributions whose relaxation time and activation energies were identical, which is required for them to produce the same internal friction peak. The present investigation was motivated by this apparent anomaly and the development of a very low thermal inertia torsion pendulum5 capable of monitoring transient behavior. Low frequency internal friction measurements were made on four binary A1-Ag alloys nominally containing 5, 10: 15, and 20 at. pct Ag. The results of measurements made on a 10 at. pct Ag alloy in the quenched condition are shown in Fig. 1. There are two peaks apparent in the spectrum, one centered at about 160°C, the second at about 210°C. The two peak spectrum was observed in each alloy, but it was best resolved in the 10 pct Ag specimens. Because of the instability in the internal friction, 4 it seemed possible that the second peak was not a peak at all, but simply a manifestation of a single, sharply transient, peak. The occasional occurrence in metalliferous veins of rounded fragments of rock, matrix or ore, lying loose, embedded in clay, or enclosed in some kind of cement, may be attributed to four causes:— I. They have been washed in from the surface, or from an upper portion of the vein.. II. They are of concretionary origin. III. They have been produced by movements in the country-rock or in the walls of the vein. TV. They have been formed in situ, by the upward, downward or lateral flow of water in the vein itself. In this paper the word " conglomerate " is confined to a rock composed of rounded fragments or pebbles cemented together, as distinguished from a " breccia," in which the rock-fragments are angular. * I. Boulders and Pebbles which have been Washed in from the Surface, or from an Upper Portion of the Vein. In this type it is presupposed that the vein at one time communicated by a fissure or open space with the surface, or with the upper portion from whence the fragments have been washed. One well-authenticated occurrence was described long ago by Fournet. Owing, no doubt, to later dislocations in the lode, pebbles from an old alluvium and sands containing titaniferous iron, as well as fragments of wood, were found in a vein at Huelgoet, in France. Only general treatment of a subject of such scope can be given in a short paper, therefore, except in a few instances, statistics and descriptions of specific installations are omitted. The earlier applications of electricity to the production of petroleum in the Mid-Continent field were widely separated chonologically, each holding a special interest, and each contributing greatly to the present development. Electric Pumping One of the first installations of electric pumping was on a lease near Jenks, Okla., in the Arkansas River bed, where a difficult problem was solved by the use of motors. The Arkansas River had frequent flood periods which interfered seriously with the use of jacks and pull rods. Small piers were built with old casing used as piling, and upon these were set small jacks driven by 3-hp. squirrel-cage motors. The starting switches were located on a bank and the power was furnished by a small generator, which was driven by an oil country gas engine. This installation was made in 1913 and is, I believe, still in satisfactory operation. In 1914, the Cushing field came in and the Hill Oil & Gas Co. electrified its Shamrock property, using eight-pole Star Delta motors, rated at 10 to 30 hp. and belted through countershafts to the band wheel. Power was furnished by a small generating plant consisting of two 135-kw. machines, gas-engine driven. Considerable difficulty was experienced in the early operation of this station because of low voltage. It is characteristic of small alternating-current generators that voltage regulation will be poor with widely fluctuating loads. This field had three producing sands, and a number of wells were redrilled with the motors, and this, together with a great deal of swabbing, was responsible for the bad load conditions. However, when the wells had settled down to steady operation, the electric equipment functioned satisfactorily, and continued in use as installed until a few years ago when the present owners contracted for service from a central-station company and shut

Although many elements reduce the tendency to porosity in steel castings, manganese, silicon, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium appear to be most generally suitable for the purpose. The manganese and silicon contents are usually maintained in a fairly constant range. Silicon-killed castings often are made to be sound with little or no addition of the stronger degasifiers. In many cases, however, it is more practical to utilize the stronger degasifying elements, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium. Since they greatly modify the composition, shape, and distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions, and thereby the ductility, the strong deoxidizers must be used in such a way as to form the least harmful types of inclusions. As the reasons for failure always to obtain good results have not been obvious, an effort has been made to determine the mechanism of solidification of steels deoxidized to produce certain types of inclusions. Diagrams representsing the mechanism of their formation have been constructed from the appearance of the nonmetallic constituents and have not only illustrated the limiting features of specific deoxidizing treatments with respect to inclusion formation and ductility, but have also indicated a relation between inclusions and resistance to hot tearing. Three different types of deoxidation treatment have been used for obtaining sound castings with relatively high ductility. The first method is to make and cast the steel under such conditions that deoxidation with silicon and a small addition of a strong deoxidizer assures soundness. The effective addition that will promote soundness without causing the formation of intergranular inclusions varies with the furnace practice and composition, but may be limitled to about 0.025 per cent Al, Zr or Ti. Up to 8.10 per cent Ca and 0.15 per cent V are also used for this purpose. The inclusions in these steels are characteristically glassy silicates and round or irregular sulphides. As pointed out by Sims and Lillieqvist,1 the formation of fine intergranular inclusions, which are detrimental to ductility, limits the amount of strong deoxidizers that may be added.

DEPLETION of anthracite resources in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, has forced the recovery of coal tracts formerly considered unminable. Chief among these are the large areas of outcrop coal lying on a heavy pitch on the mountain sides, abandoned thirty or forty years ago as too costly and too hazardous to mine. The old companies, in many instances, stopped their chambers 80 or 100 ft. hack from the actual outcrop, and then dropped back another 100 ft. before starting to rob the pillars, thus leaving large areas of coal. Recovery of this coal naturally leads to mining hazards not encountered years ago. The first step is to sink a slope from the surface with the pitch of the vein, and then drive counters across the pitch as close to the robbed area as proper protection for the lower side of the -counter will permit. Next, the old chambers are advanced or new ones driven in the solid, as the conditions require. As these chambers approach the outcrop the real safety work begins-that of preventing the miner from being buried or locked in by an avalanche of mud.

I WAS wondering whether we were going to adhere to our text. It seems to me that we are having a very remarkable meeting of mining engineers this year, because no matter what the texts may be that are assigned to us, we get back toward something higher; we turn to the consideration of questions of ethics, and of applied Christianity. Yesterday we listened to the most eloquent and remarkable address by Mr. Rickard in memory of Dr. Raymond, and it was told us that he was to speak about Raymond's achievements as an engineer. He did say considerable on that subject, but he was himself carried away with the spirit of the man and moved us all by his portrayal of Dr. Raymond's continued and fruitful labors for the betterment of mankind-that is to say his religion. Our President asked me if I would say something this afternoon and I find in the bulletin that the text of the discourses which we are to have here this afternoon is "International Cooperation in Mining in North America." But again I find that the eloquent speaker who has just preceded me has dwelt largely on ethical and spiritual cooperation rather than upon cooperation in mining. That is, cooperation as men, rather .than solely as engineers. The imaginary line dividing Canada from the United States, unmarked by fort or military post, was mentioned by a previous speaker. There are going to be in the future, I am sure, fewer entanglements of the barbed wire of tariff discrimination along our border-to that end let us cooperate. But there has always been a reciprocity in men. A Canadian conceived and created our great transcontinental line, the Great Northern Railway; an American made the Canadian Pacific what it is. In mining and metallurgy, American engineers, backed by American capital, have built up great Canadian industries while Canadian experts have developed some of the resources on this side of the line. They have done much more than develop our resources: some of them have been our leaders in sympathy for labor. It is therefore not a question of creating a spirit of cooperation, but of giving it freer scope and a fuller realization of fraternity-or, to use the .word now more common and of deeper significance-brotherhood.

The same limitations' that characterized 1931 existed in the old fields of Indiana and Illinois during 1932. Prices remained low. The average for the year for Illinois and southwestern Indiana was $1.032 as against $0.852 for 1931 and $1.616 for 1930. In September a curtailment of production of about 25 per cent became effective and was continued to the end of the year. There were no new discoveries and very little wildcatting was done. Considering the age of the wells, and the number still producing, there were few abandonments. The most outstanding thing about the old fields in these states is their long continued productivity. Illinois The fields along the southeast end of the LaSalle anticline had their peak of 33,686,000 bbl. in 1908. In 1932, with a 25 per cent restriction for 355 months, these fields produced 4,661,000 bb1.l There were 52 new completions (most of them in old territory) and of these 33 were dry, 8 were gas, and 11 were oil wells. The new oil wells had a total initial of 102 bbl., or an average of 9.3 bbl. per well. Nineteen of the new producers were in Crawford County. There were about 200 wells abandoned in the old southeast fields in 1932 as compared to 210 in 1931. The greatest number, 86, were in Lawrence County. To the end of 1932, the four major counties—Clark, Crawford, Lawrence and Wabash—had produced almost 394,000,000 bbl. from 92,160 acres. Better than one-half of this was produced in Lawrence County from 26,240 acres. The Dupo area of Sinclair County had no additions to production although four wells were drilled. On the Jacksonville structure in Morgan County, six gas wells with an average depth of 300 ft. were drilled to sands in the base of the Pennsylvanian. They produced an open-flow total initial of 2,000,000 cu. ft. This gas will be developed further to supply a local market.

The Institute maintains a dual relationship with students: (1) an individual relationship with a Student Associate; and (2) a relationship with local organizations of students, known as Affiliated Student Societies or Student Chapters. 1. The conditions of Student Associateship are set forth in Section 8, .Article 1 of the By-laws of the Institute (see p. 45 and following pages) During 1934, sundry amendments were made for the purpose of improving the student relationship. Post-graduate students are now eligible; and the associateship can be maintained, with the payment of the regular dues of $2 per gear, for 18 months following graduation in June. A Student Associate is given a subscription to MINING A ND METALLURGY: he is accorded the privilege of getting special publications such as "The Porphyry Coppers" and "Ore Deposits of the Western States" at the reduced prices applicable to Members; he has the privileges of the Engineering Societies Employment Service and the Engineering Societies Library; and he is not only invited but urged to attend all meetings of the Institute, its Divisions and its Local Sections. The Institute wants to extend the hand of professional fellowship to students following mineral industries curricula.

T. W. ROBINSON, Pueblo, Colo.: Mr. Potter's review is a striking testimony to the important part played by science in this branch of practice. But, the question arises, In which department has science effected most ? The available raw material, the size of furnaces, the general design and equipment of the plant, and the daily management, are particulars, each of which contributes to the general result, while the effect of each merges into that of the others. The following notes concerning the operations of the furnace-plant of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company (formerly the Colorado Coal and Iron Company), at Pueblo, may throw some light upon the question of their relative importance. This company operates three stacks, and when the plant first came under my observation, about nine months ago, the furnaces were constructed, equipped,and run as stated below: Raw Materials.—The main sources of ore-supply were, as they still are, the Orient and Calumet mines of the company. The Brecce and Morning Glory ores, mentioned below, were formerly brought from Leadville, but are practically now no longer used. The Orient ore is a porous brown hematite, easily reducible in the furnace. The Calumet is a magnetite, very refractory in character, requiring preliminary roasting. Both are fairly uniform in composition. The Breece and Morning Glory are red hematites, resembling in appearance the soft ores of the Vermilion range, Lake Superior. The coke here used is made of coal from the company's mines in southern Colorado, and is distinct from that produced by the company in the western part of the State. The structure is similar to that of Alabama coke. The limestone employed is a calcite. The analyses are given in Table I. I would note, parenthetically, that I know of no section of the country presenting harder conditions for furnace-practice than these materials impose. Results cannot be measured by the more

Models of photoelastic material were made to simulate a mine roof that had cracked over the edge of the pillars and at the center of the span. Models were restrained from moving laterally outward so they acted as flat arches. Uniform loading was approximated by loading the models along the bottom at eight points spaced equally along the span. It was found that for models with depth to span ratios of 1:3 to 1:6, the maximum stress at the top of the center crack could be calculated directly by the following formula: Elastic stresses in mine roofs composed of sedimentary beds are usually computed by assuming that the immediate roof bed acts as a fully restrained beam uniformly loaded by its own weight and by overlying strata. Very little work has been done to analyze stresses in roof beds or beams which contain vertical (normal to the span) or nearly vertical cracks. Yet every mining engineer has walked safely under roofs that show such cracks. As far back as 1933, Bucky' made model studies of the effect of vertical cracks on the behavior of horizontal strata. He did not make any analysis of the stresses but did show that a cracked beam will stand safely under certain conditions, and also showed that a beam restrained at the ends can crack over the supports and in the middle without collapsing as long as the ends of the beam are not free to move laterally outward. The beam, or rather, part of the beam, acts like a flat arch and supports itself by pushing outward at its supports. In 1941 Evans2 treated analytically the problem of a beam cracked along so many planes perpendicular to the axis of the beam that no tensile stress can operate. He named this type of beam a "voussoir-beam" by analogy to the voussoir-arch. In 1962 ~a~cocks~ modified Evans's solution by including the effect of the shear stress component of the resultant force at the abutment. This paper gives the results of a photoelastic study of the stresses in a beam containing vertical cracks in the center of the span and over the supports. A

At the Seventy-sixth meeting of the Institute, held in New York, N. Y., February, 1899,I presented a paper on this subject entitled, Coal-Cutting Machinery,' which has become somewhat out of date, in view of the decade's development in this feature of the coal-mining industry. It should be explained that the present paper is limited to the use of mining-machines in bituminous mines. Practically all of the anthracite mined is "shot from the solid," no undercutting being done. Anthracite-mining is therefore not considered in the statistics or other references. The statistical record as compiled by the U. S. Geological Survey shows that in 1898, the year preceding the presentation of my former paper, there were 32,413,144 short tons of coal undercut by the use of machines. In 1907 the machine-mined coal-product amounted to 138,547,823 short tons. In sympathy with the general decrease in coal-production during 1908, the output of machine-mined coal decreased to 123,183,334 short tons, but the proportion of machine-mined coal to the total output, nevertheless, showed an increase, from 35.1 per cent. in 1907 to 37 per cent. in 1908. In 1898 only 19.5 per cent. of the total product was unclercut.by the use of machines. The number of in use in the bituminous mines of the United States has increased from 2,622 in 1898 to 11,144 in 1907, and to 11,569 in 1908. A simplified system of flotation testing has been developed recently at the Bureau of Mineral Research of Rutgers University. The technique involves the known principle of skin flotation and can be used with minute quantities of sample and reagents in a beaker. A vessel containing the conditioned sample with added water and flotation reagents is held inclined and rotated slowly. Water-repellent particles come in contact with air and float on the surface of the liquid, while wettable particles are submerged. The float is poured off and filtered whereas the nonfloat remains in the beaker. The filtrate may be returned to repeat the process.

THE loading of bituminous coal mechan¬ically was recognized about the year 1900, but during the following 28 years less than 5 per cent of the bituminous pro¬duction in the United States was loaded by mechanical means. During the past i6 years, however, the usage of some form of mechanical loader has had a very rapid and accelerated growth, until at present production of bituminous coal by mechanical means has reached an all¬time high of approximately 46 per cent, and is still increasing. This rapid growth in the use of the mechanical loader has been supplemented by an increase in mechanical cleaning. The importance of mechanical cleaning of coal was recognized many years before the mechanical loader was introduced, because of the impossibility of cleaning manually the sizes below 2 in., and the increasing competition from other fuels. Utilization of mechanical loaders without mechanical cleaning on the surface for at least one or more sizes is the exception, rather than the rule. One exception is a mine that employs caterpillar-mounted mobile loaders exclusively, and mines the entire seam without any selectivity, and yet loads and ships six grades of coal of the very highest quality without mechanical cleaning. Such a fortunate situation can exist only where mining conditions are ideal, where top and bottom are exceptional and there are no impurity partings, and where there is loader height. The conversion from hand loading to mechanical loading has definitely intro¬duced many problems in the preparation plant of yesterday and in the modern streamline plant as well. Many of these problems have been solved by good, sound, conscientious initiative on the part of the plant personnel, with minor expendi¬tures; the solution taking the pattern of rearranging and improving the equipment at hand. Other problems have caused, and are causing, considerable concern and difficulty. LARGE IMPURITIES The removal of large quantities of large impurities from the lump coal, and their handling and disposal, is definitely a troublesome and costly problem. The cost of manually removing the impurities from the picking table alone, based on the actual recovered lump coal, can reach a cost of 42 cents per ton or more. In the design of future plants it would be wise to give this phase of preparation considerably more time and thought, particularly if the seam of coal contains one or more heavy partings and the mining procedure is all seam. This same caution applies to seams that may not contain heavy partings but have poor and heavy draw-slate top, which falls with the coal during the mining cycle. One of the more recent of the modern preparation plants has answered this problem by installing a rock crusher under the picking table in such a manner that the impurities can be diverted by gravity directly to the crusher.
