THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36’ W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. Geology has become increasingly quantitative in the last 20 years. This trend has been accelerated by computer capability in the manipulation of data. The mining industry has been relatively slow to harness computer power, but the larger companies have moved in this direction in the past few years. Among the leaders in this progression is the White Pine Copper Co., and the following is a brief description of their computer system for processing, managing, and utilizing geologic data. Geology The White Pine mine is in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, 6 miles south of Lake Superior and 80 miles west of the Houghton-Hancock area, center of the famous Copper country. The ore body of chalcocite, native copper, and minor native silver, is a tabular body in the basal 25 ft of the flat lying Nonsuch Shale and the top part of the underlying Copper Harbor Conglomerate. It is the purpose of this article to present the results of an investigation of certain clay and shale suspensions having viscosities that are materially influenced by fluid motion, and to discuss the bearing of these results upon the choice of policy in the control of drilling fluids. A previous article described the design and the characteristics of an instrument adapted to measure the viscosity of plastic suspensions during continuous uniform motion and at a variety of speeds.' It has long been recognized that the viscosity of a clay suspension depends on the past history of the fluid motion. Since an abundance of literature is available on this phenomenon,2 it is not necessary to describe it in more than general terms. It is usually observed that rapid motion reduces the viscosity of a clay suspension, and that some time is required for the viscosity to fall to its equilibrium value after the steady motion is started. On reducing the speed of motion to some lower value, the viscosity again rises, but it also requires some time to attain a steady viscosity value at the slower rate of motion. Thus clay suspensions are usually observed to be increasing in viscosity as time passes when the measurement has been immediately preceded by fluid motion that was more rapid than that employed in the measurement. And it is usually observed that the viscosity falls as time passes when the measurement has been preceded by more quiescent conditions. Reed,3 and Broughton and Hand4 have reported a condition of observation of clay suspensions in which the viscosity was observed to fall during the first few moments of steady motion, and rise thereafter. The characteristics of the new instrument are particularly well adapted to studies of this kind. DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

Gasoline is undoubtedly of major importance not only to the petroleum refiner but to the producer. To study the economic aspects of gasoline is, in a measure, a constructive effort to solve the problem of overproduction not only for the refiner but for the entire petroleum industry. After all, the prime object of producing crude petroleum is to supply motor fuel and lubricants to nearly 25,000,000 American motor vehicles, not to mention the increasing demand for these products abroad. Since gasoline furnishes the chief source of revenue to the refiner, it follows that this important product should veritably become recognized by all branches of the petroleum industry as an almost infallible index of day to day requirements of the producer and the refiner. A careful study of gasoline statistics over the past decade or more reveals that there is a definite correlation between world-wide gasoline requirements and the demand for crude petroleum, as well as all other petroleum products. This leads the writer to the conclusion that gasoline is literally the economic yardstick of the entire petroleum industry. Control of Operations That the refiner has begun to recognize the urgent need for controlling his operations is evidenced by the results of the past three years. Unfortunately, it is a difficult problem to convince the refiner that he cannot run crude in excess of the demand for gasoline, without incurring a consequent decline in the market value of this and all other products of distillation. Undoubtedly, he still has much to learn in this respect. Few commercial products have enjoyed such phenomenal growth in demand as has gasoline, and, at the same time, few products have failed, as has gasoline, to reap financial benefit from the popular demand for a national necessity. Perhaps this unprecedented demand was responsible for the overextension of retining facilities, which resulted in the excesses of recent times; at any rate, as the demand for gasoline grew by leaps and bounds, so the refining industry continued to increase its capacity for

THE deposit of rock salt along the shores of Lake Huron, in Canada, has been brought before the public during the last six months, in consequence of the developments made by the diamond drill at Goderich. It is likely to be of more than common interest in the future, since now actual operations have been commenced to exploit the deposit and work it by regular mining. The methods of mining rock salt being but little known in this country, it may be of interest to make a few general remarks in regard to them before entering, upon the description of this new mining enterprise. According to the conditions under which salt is found in nature, various methods have been resorted to, in course of time, to make it available for the human race. They consist in : A. Natural or solar evaporation. B. Artificial evaporation, either exclusively or in connection with the former. C. Mining the rock salt in its natural state, and converting it to a marketable product, if need be, by simply pulverizing it. Without going into the details of the various methods of making salt available in an economical point of view, dependent on its degree of purity, or on various local influences, we cannot refrain from. alluding to the general principles which influence the mining and manufacturing of salt in countries where they have been carried on for hundreds of years. ECONOMICAL CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS. Salt being one of the articles of prime necessity, and one universally distributed throughout nature, it must always be sold at a comparatively low price. It would even be quoted in the market at prices far below those now ruling, if it were not for the high duties generally imposed upon it, for purposes of state revenues. But looking closer into the subject, it will be found that this duty is probably one of the least oppressive, although in some countries it exceeds sixfold the cost of profitable production. NOW that real progress is being made in building airplanes that can stand up under adverse conditions in isolated parts of the world, utilization of aviation by mining and petroleum companies is proceeding rapidly. This isolation, offering such handicaps to ordinary methods of transportation, also was the thorn in the flesh of aviation until the recent advances in plane and englue design. The accompanying illustration shows one of the six new planes just delivered to the U. S. Government for map making. The planes will be used in Department of Commerce, Coast and Geodetic Survey, Navy Hydrographic, and Insular work. There is a trap door in the bottom of the hull for a Fairchild camera which takes five pictures-vertical, N60°, E60°, S60°, and W60°-at regular intervals. INTRODUCTION - SCOPE OF DISCUSSION There has hitherto been no systematic effort to make public the available information on petroleum in South America and the object of this paper, therefore, is to broadly discuss the subject as it pertains to South America as a whole, endeavoring to collect in readable form what is known regarding individual fields. This article is not intended to exhaustively discuss individual fields, or to solve the many complicated problems regarding petroleum and natural. gas in the various republics, since those necessitate years of study and work by petroleum geologists, engineers, financiers, and drillers. Neither. can the reader expect absolute accuracy in all statements, since this is impossible at the present time. The writer has, of course, attempted to be correct in all cases, but in a review involving so many countries and extending over so many, phases of the subject, it is to be expected that some errors will have crept in.

A number of detailed investigations of the physical changes accompanying age-hardening have raised the question as to the possibility of some phenomenon preceding the actual process of precipitation. There is considerable evidence to indicate that in the first stages of the aging process there is a pronounced distortion of the crystal lattice. This is particularly marked in duralumin. It would be of considerable theoretical interest to know the nature of this distortion as compared with that produced in other ways and to find out whether, in supersaturated alloys, it is a necessary antecedent to the formation of a second phase by precipitation. It was believed that a study of the age-hardening char-acteristics of a normally aged alloy compared with one that had been mechanically distorted might supply some useful information on these points. In addition, information would be obtained regarding the effect of a mechanical distortion on any subsequent stage in the aging process. Duralumin was chosen as the material for this investigation because the various aspects of its aging behavior can be shown in detail by suitable variations of the aging temperature. Also, probably more work has been done on this class of alloys than on any other. In spite of the many published results, it was felt that the experiments would be significant only if all of the work were done on samples from the same source and if they were examined under identical experimental conditions. Previous Work The many studies of the mechanism of aging in duralumin have been more or less crystallized by a series of papers by Fink and Smith1~2~3 and a recent paper by Cohen.~ The former authors believe that a simple precipitation theory is adequate to account for the various phenomena

A career in the coal mining industry today offers students one of the most interesting and challenging opportunities available in the industrialized world. As reserves of other fossil fuels dwindle in face of the world's demand for energy, it has become apparent that coal, once the king of energy sources, must be relied upon again as the major fuel for powering industrial growth in developed and developing nations. Centuries of coal supplies lie beneath the earth's surface, assuring the world of a steady, plentiful supply of energy until science and technology can produce a way to harness and efficiently use renewable sources, such as solar. The need to increase our use of coal during the last two decades of the 20th century is reason enough to believe that the future growth of the coal industry is assured. A major impediment to that growth might be backward national public policies that could restrict the full utilization of our coal reserves. These policies could result from overregulation and a failure of the public to recognize that coal use, with proper techno- logical safeguards, is compatible with our society's environmental-quality objectives. Communication of this problem and its solution is a major undertaking of the coal industry in the 1980s. At the end of the 1970s, the American coal industry was producing approximately 635 Mt/a (700 million stpy) of coal. To meet the nation's projected energy needs by 1985, the annual tonnage must be doubled. A similar scenario is predicted for the rest of the world. Such growth in the modern international business world will require huge additional amounts of capital, equipment, and people who know how to wisely raise and apply the capital; use the equipment productively; and deal with the many community, public, and governmental problems such expansion will create. OF all the qualities that are essential in a good cigar tobacco none is quite so important as the burn. This term is general and includes many points, the most important of which are evenness of burn, color of ash, firmness and coherence of ash, and fire-holding capacity. The fire-holding capacity refers to the length of time the leaf or cigar will continue to, glow after ignition. Chlorides tend to prevent complete combustion and products are formed thereby that are injurious to the flavor and aroma. On the other hand, the carbonates of the alkalies, particularly of potassium, aid the combustion and increase the fire-holding capacity. Barth1 thought that the harmful effect of the chlorides was due to their fusing and coating the tobacco, thereby preventing complete combustion. Schlosing,2 Nessler,3 and Garner,4 suggested widely different theories to account for the favorable action of potassium salts. In order to study carefully the action of the various salts upon the course of combustion of the cigar a knowledge of the temperature of the burning cigar is necessary. Lehmann5 who seems to be the only investigator who has made any attempt to determine the temperature of a burning cigar gives 480° C. as the maximum temperature which he recorded. It is evident, however, that his measurements were in error, probably on account of the method and apparatus used, since the lowest visible red corresponds to a temperature of about 575° C.

Every 12 minutes, a cable operated skip car appears from beneath the desert surface of Arizona's Papago Indian Reservation. The Papagos have become quite used to the car, particularly those whose paychecks depend upon its regular appearance. The 24-ton capacity skip or tramcar hauls copper ore out of the North Decline of Hecla Mining Company's new mine about 30 mi south of Casa Grande. While there's nothing particularly glamorous about the skip itself, the railroad system upon which it travels is interesting because of the unconventional way it was built.

The small-angle dislocation-boundary density of nickel and some of its alloys was investigated as a function of strength. It was found that the strength is a linear function of the density for pure nickel and for Ni-Ti alloys, but not for Ni-Co alloys. The results are interpreted in terms of dislocation theory. THE processes by which metals deform are still poorly understood, even though there has been a concentrated research effort in this field during the past fifteen years. Single crystals and individual grains in polycrystalline aggregates often develop a subgrain structure when deformed. Substructure formation occurs as a result of local plastic bending and its development is augmented by annealing at moderate temperatures.' Investigations made to date, largely qualitative in nature, have shown that the substructure is composed of a network of small-angle boundaries. The purpose of the present paper is to present some quantitative data on substructure (obtained by X-ray techniques) and to correlate the results with the strength of the metal in which the substructure existed. Nickel and some of its alloys were used for the experiments. The presence of certain kinds of foreign atoms greatly alters the formation and effect of the substructure. Polycrystalline tensile specimens were prepared from high purity nickel, two Ni-Ti alloys, and two Ni-Co alloys; the composition of these materials is given in Table I. Tensile specimens having a reduced section 1/4 in. diam by 3 in. long were machined from materials which were refined, cast, forged, and swaged in the authors' laboratories. The specimens were annealed for 1/2 hr at 1150°C, a treatment which produced grains having a diameter of approximately 0.5 mm. This rather large grain size was used to facilitate later examination of the substructure. Duplicate specimens of pure nickel and of each alloy were strained various controlled amounts in tension at room temperature and recovered for 1 hr at 800°C. (This strain induced prior to recovery will be referred to hereafter as the "prestrain.") One of each of the recovered specimens was pulled in tension at room temperature to obtain the stress-strain curves. The other bar was cross-sectioned in the gage length, carefully polished, and deeply etched to remove all cold-worked material. This specimen was then examined by the X-ray microscopic technique2 to determine the nature and magnitude of the substructure. The use of duplicate specimens permitted a direct correlation between tensile properties and substructure characteristics. X-ray microscopic studies were made with an apparatus constructed to have an average resolving power of about 4 microns. The monochromatic radiation reflected from grains which were oriented favorably was recorded on fine-grain photographic plates. These were examined at Xl00 which represents the true magnification, since there was essentially none in the X-ray system. This permitted detection of angular differences between subgrains of as little as 10 min. A very large number (over 100) of grains for each specimen was examined at this magnification and the number of substructure boundaries per grain was tabulated. An accurate relative measure was obtained under fixed experimental conditions, e.g., same grain size, resolving power, magnification, etc. The greatest source of error lay in counting the subboundaries, but this proved to be surprisingly small when repeated counts were made by different investigators. Furthermore, as the subsequent analysis indicates, whatever human error was introduced was not significant. Analysis of the Substructure Data When the number of substructure boundaries per grain was plotted against the frequency, skew (asymmetrical) distribution curves of the type shown in Fig. 1 were obtained. These are smoothed curves for the 1 atomic pct Ti in nickel alloy subjected to various prestrains and are representative of the curves obtained with all the metals. Considerable discussion took place at the June 18th Board of Directors Meeting concerning ways the Petroleum Branch office in Dallas could better serve its members and the essentially Petroleum Local Sections, namely the Delta, East Texas, Gulf Coast, Kansas, Mid-Continent, North Texas, Oklahoma City, Permian Basin, and Southwest Texas. The question of whether decentralization strengthens or weakens the Institute was debated, particularly as to what services could be advantageously decentralized and how both offices could keep informed on their mutual problems. Among other things, it was decided that an Auxiliary Admissions Committee could screen applications from Petroleum members before final action by the National Admissions Committee in New York. Finally it was voted, "That all administrative matters that can be properly delegated to a Branch organization may be so delegated". Final details were approved at the July 16th meeting of the Executive and Finance Committees.

THE problem of the curtailment of forces in large numbers does not often come to employment departments and is, therefore, a problem that many departments are not prepared to handle intelligently. Those companies that are able to measure the individual efficiency of each man would probably lay off men according to their individual ability, irrespective of dependents, citizenship, or other considerations. During the war when labor was scarce, the business of the employment manager in industry was hiring men and carefully placing them where they were best fitted to work. The careful selection of employees had developed to a considerable extent before the war, and was becoming a recognized science. In the last few months, however, the cancellation of copper contracts, the accumulation of large stocks, the necessary curtailment of production because the copper could not be sold, and lack of any immediate prospects of the copper market opening, have led to a universal reduction of forces; and the problem that industry now confronts is that of discharging rather than employing. The problem has been aggravated by the cancelation of contracts in many war industries with the consequent turning loose of hundreds of thousands of men, a great amount of unemployment, and the return of the soldiers and sailors. The problem has now become one of reduction of working force with the least hardship and the least injustice, and yet caring for the returning soldiers, sailors, and marines who have been in the service of the government for nearly 2 years, and who have offered the supreme sacrifice. The Copper Queen Branch of the Phelps Dodge Corpn., operating at Bisbee, Ariz., found it necessary, along with all of the-other copper companies of the country, to reduce its force materially. In making this reduction it was, after due consideration, decided to classify employees with respect to dependents, length of service, and citizenship. THE literature concerning the remelting of aluminum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the greater part of the papers about this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification1,2 are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remeltings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, .. , if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H2, 02, H2O, C02, CO, CH4, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of Sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere [m = K _%/PH, [I]] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Röntgen and Braun4, Röntgen and Möller5, Bircumshaw6 and Winterhager7 have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is inferior to 1.000°K. One obtains: [log K = - 4,702.5 + 0.238 [2]] Besides its usual signification, the term PH2 represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is, when no gas exchange occurs between the two phases, the pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary occurs, the quantity of H2 should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature lowers, the internal pressure of H2 increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a maximum depending on the hydrostatic pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However, even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. I deeply appreciate the honor of being selected to deliver the twentieth Annual Lecture of the Institute of Metals Division. The subject of my paper is extremely involved and voluminous, therefore I shall discuss only some more recent experimental material and speculate somewhat on the physical and mechanical fundamentals of these changes. The flow and the rupture of a solid material are rather different phenomena. It is therefore surprising that up to a rather advanced stage in metallurgical science these two fundamental phenomena have been simultaneously treated and forced into the general conception of the "failure " of solid material. Only in this century, and particularly during the last 20 years, have the very different physical meanings of flow and rupture been clearly recognized. Several hundred of the more recent publications deal with these subjects.l Law of Similarity The basic values commonly considered responsible for the mechanical behavior of any material are the stresses. From this standpoint both a large and a small article made from the same homogeneous metal and of geometrically similar shapes should behave identically, i.e., they should deform geometrically in a similar manner, if subjected to the same stress values at corresponding points. This "law of similarity" was introduced about 60 years ago simul- taneously by Barba2 and Kick3 and was derived from the classical theory of elasticity. As far as the plastic behavior of a metal is concerned, this rule appears to be valid. The conventional properties of large and small tension or compression test bars, machined from larger sections, are identical; while the force required to deform a section is proportional to its cross-sectional area and the work consumed in deforming geometrically similar articles in a geometrically similar manner is proportional to its volume. The general trend of the stress-strain diagram of a metal is independent of the section size (Fig. I). No exceptions from this rule are known. However, if the deformation of a metal is continued until rupture occurs, and the breaking stress or the work consumed is measured, a test bar of large cross section appears to fail before or at lower stresses than does one having a small cross section. Thus, the specific impact energy has been often found to decrease with increasing size of the test specimen, particularly for materials with a limited ductility.4 Another exception from the rule of similarity is offered by fatigue-strength values, which usually decrease with increasing section size.6'6 The conclusion must be drawn from these experimental facts that the ductility of a homogeneous metal decreases with increasing section size (Fig. I). This effect has been actually confirmed by Docherty,7 who observed that in static notch bending tests large specimens failed earlier and in a more brittle fashion than small specimens ma-
