Illinois supplies coal to seven states in the Upper Mississippi Valley —Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and portions of the Dakotas, Nebraska and Kansas. In this same area are marketed large quantities of coal from West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere; fuel oil from the crude petroleum supplies of the Mid-Continent fields, and natural gas from Louisiana, Kansas and the Texas Panhandle. The boundaries of this "Illinois coal-market area" are determined by competition from other coal fields and from other forms of fuel. Within the area so described 90 per cent of Illinois coal is marketed. Thus in the Southwest, an abundance of fuel-oil supplies and natural gas dominates the market almost to the exclusion of coal. The westward movement of Illinois coal in Kansas, Nebraska and the Dakotas is met by an eastward flow of high-grade coals from Colorado, Wyoming and Montana. In the lake-shore counties of Minnesota and Wisconsin, the market is dominated by Appalachian coals, cheaply carried over the Great Lakes and reaching the ports of Lake Michigan and at the head of Lake Superior. Illinois coals find their largest market in the southern and western sections of these two lake states. Only small quantities of Illinois coals are shipped east of the state line. This market area is occupied entirely by the neighboring coal fields of Indiana and the Appalachian coal fields in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Illinois Coal-makket Area , With these factors in mind, the map of the Illinois coal-market area may be drawn. Within this boundary is the area that is logically and economically served by Illinois coal. However, this area is by no means exclusively dependent upon coal from Illinois mines. The preponderance. of Appalachian coal in Wisconsin and Minnesota has been mentioned. Appalachian coal, also, moves in large tonnages into Illinois itself, particularly the Chicago district. The Iowa and Missouri local coals share the market with imported coal from Illinois; throughout the market area, fuel oil and natural gas are important factors in the total energy supply.

The centenary of Julia Ward Howe, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," is of particular interest to the members of the Institute because of the very active part that has been taken in the affairs of the Institute by her son, Dr. H. M. Howe. By an order of the Board of Education, the one hundredth anniversary of Mrs. Howe's birth, May 27, was observed in the public schools of New York City with the singing of the fatuous battle hymn. Boston, the city of her adoption, celebrated her centenary by a service in the Church of the Disciples, where Governor Coolidge made an address, and in which John Andrew Post took a prominent part. General Pershing sent a letter, which was read by the Rev. Abraham Mitrie Rihbany, in which he said: "It is a great privilege to bear witness to the widespread effect of ?The Battle Hymn of the Republic? on the morale of the fighting men. It is unique in its religious fervor and enthusiasm and whenever sung it can have but the same effect which it produced when it was first sung in the Civil War."

This important Chair has been filled in the past by such eminent metallurgists as John Percy, Sir William C. Roberts-Austen, and others. A large manufacturing company having two iron foundries, blast furnace, etc., requires the services of a chemist, metallographist, and metallurgical engineer qualified to give advice on cast iron practice, and to prescribe remedies for difficulties often met with in the usual iron foundry. The years immediately ahead-1961, 1962, 1963- will be critical years from every standpoint for the young engineer. In the next few years, he must learn to grow professionally. Most often, the rate and extent of this growth will be governed by his own initiative and perseverance. Habits and attitudes acquired during these early professional years relate very closely to, and even foreshadow, future accomplishments. The future goal of the young engineer is a moving target. It will change with professional growth, family requirements, changes in predominant interest, general economic and business conditions and geographic location. However ambitious and stead-fast in his goal he may be, the young engineer should not hesitate to adjust or change-for he really does not know initially what he is best fitted for and will not know until he has tried a number of things patiently and persistently.

Between cross currents of economic factors and international expediencies the iron and steel industry in 1948 made an outstanding contribution to the general economic picture. Were it not for an unfortunate episode during the month of April involving a temporary shortage of coal, 1948 would have been an all-time record year in output. Exceeded in no previous peacetime year, the production of iron and steel in 1948 totaled some 88,500,000 tons. That it was a worthwhile effort of no small magnitude is evidenced by the fact that in three and one half years following the war, this nation has produced as much steel as in the five years preceding the war. This figure of 88,500,000 tons is 68 per cent greater than that for 1939.

The process of diffusion alloying of mixed powders offers attractive possibilities both commercially and experimentally. It avoids the fabrication difficulties arising from high alloy contents. Indeed, the process is facilitated by larger alloy additions. The direct formation of the part or test piece and the opportunlity to perform machining operations under more favorable conditions are of no small importance. However, it is necessary to make only brief mention of the interesting features. As yet there have been few attempts to study this process in detail and to carry it to completion, if such is possible. It was intended not only to measure the intermediate and optimum magnetic properties of sintered alloys but to use magnetic testing itself as a means of following the progress of alloying under various condi-tions. Having established that alloys could be successfully synthesized by this tech. nique, the opportunity was taken to study the magnetic properties of several alloys of iron and silicon which had hitherto been too difficult to prepare in suitable test piece form. While avoiding some of the difficulties inherent in the fabrication of alloys by orthodox methods, the diffusion alloying process introduces a few of its own. The first of these is the evaluation of the approach to homogenization. In recent years some notable contributions have been made to this question, but considerable uncertainty remains in its definition and evaluation. This work has concerned itself with further study of this problem and it is hoped that more light has been shed on it. The second of these difficulties arises from the presence of porosity. It is inevitable that in the consolidation of a loose bulk of powder, there should remain some voids unless extremely high pressures are repeatedly applied. It was therefore of importance to investigate their effect on magnetic properties. Recently this effect has been studied and certain predictions made of its behavior. It is believed that the experimental results presented here provide a sound substantiation of the theoretical treatment. The attempt has been made to synthesize five alloys of the iron-silicon system and three each of the iron-nickel and iron-cobalt systems. A series of experiments was also conducted on some of these alloys to test their susceptibility to heat treatment. Some unfortunate experiences have provided opportunity to report data on the deleterious effects of nitrogen on magnetic properties when present as a a in protective atmospheres. FULTON1 says: "Speiss is an artificial arsenide of iron containing smaller amounts of other metals. In constitution it is similar to a matte except that arsenic replaces sulfur." For the purposes of this paper it will be necessary to broaden the definition, and I propose the following: Speiss is an artificial mixture of arsenides, of which arsenide of iron may be taken as a type, but iron may be replaced in part or wholly by other metals (such as copper, nickel, cobalt, lead and zinc) and the arsenic may be replaced in part or wholly by antimony. In addition to antimony and arsenic, speisses often contain sulfur. Speisses usually also contain both silver and gold. Table 1 illustrates the variations that may be encountered. The Elk City district is in north-central Idaho about 60 miles east of Grangeville and near the headwaters of the South Fork of the Clearwater River (Fig. 1). At the height of its boom in the early sixties, Elk City had a population of more than 2000 people, Published estimates of the placer production from the district range from $10,000,000 to $18,500,000. Although the first quartz-vein location was made as early as 1870, very little gold was extracted from quartz ores until after the completion of the American Eagle mill in 1902. Between 1902 and 1932 a total of from $750,000 to $1,000,000 was taken from about six properties. General Geology Distribution of Rocks Banded gneiss (Fig. 2) is the most aburldant bedrock in the Elk City district. It is interbedded with schist and quartzite and ill some places these rocks have been intruded by sills and dikes. Banded gneiss prevails in the western part of the area whereas schist prevails to the southeast. Augen gneiss occurs for the most part as irregular bodies, which lie transverse to the trend of the banded gneiss and schist. It is largely confined to two areas; one of which extends from east of the American Eagle mine westward as far as the Black Pine mine, a total distance of about five miles, and another area of about two square miles in the vicinity of the California-Idaho placer mine. Quartzite is fairly abundant. In addition to the bands of the latter interbedded with gneiss and schist, some large lenses crop out in the southeastern part of the dik-trict near the southern contact of the area underlain by granodiorite. Granodiorite crops out over a large area and extends northeastward

Any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence can be synthesized if there is a transition procedure from one lithology or bedding type to another, and if thickness distributions of the different lithologies are known. Stratigraphic sections of a fluvial sandstone body were synthesized with five bedding types: cross-bedding, massive beds, parting lineation, ripple mark and mudstone. The transition procedure from one bedding type to another used dependent, Markovian random processes which have a memory that extends one step backward in the depositional process. As observed in nature, median grain size and sand wave thickness (cross-bedding and ripple mark) decline upward in the synthesized sections as proportions of the different bedding types change. Grain size and permeability were also incorporated into the sections. By changing the transition procedures, bed thickness distributions, rate of upward decline or sand wave height and length, different types of sections can be synthesized, thus making it possible to model many different sedimentation problems. INTRODUCTION This paper describes a general method for synthesizing stratigraphic sections and bedding sequences of sedimentary, metamorphic or igneous origin. Synthetic generation is of interest for several reasons. Close correspondence between real and synthetic sections suggests that the factors used in the synthesizing model may indeed be the correct ones, thus giving the investigator a check on his assumptions. Rapid, inexpensive simulation of many stratigraphic sections permits one to synthesize a rock body (sandstone or carbonate reservoir) or, on a larger scale, the fill of a sedimentary basin. Harbaughl gives an example of mathematical simulation of a carbonate basin. He simulated the basin in the hope that improved prediction would follow better understanding of the depositional processes. From the petroleum engineer's viewpoint it seems reasonable to believe that the synthetic generation of rock properties and their distribution in a reservoir should be relevant in the study of reservoirs. Any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence can be generated provided there is a transition procedure from one lithology or bedding type to another, and provided the thickness distributions of the different units are known. The transition procedure involves random processes that are either independent or dependent. If the depositional process is independent, previous deposition will have no influence on present deposition. However, if it is dependent, past deposition will influence either present or future deposition. Such a dependent depositional process can be thought of as having a memory that extends backward in time through one or more pulses of deposition. A process with a memory can be described by a Markov process. Because the concept of memory or dependence appears to be in accord with our understanding of many depositional processes, Markov processes were used to synthesize the bedding sequences of this study (see Appendix). The above methods are perfectly general and are appropriate for any stratigraphic section or bedding sequence: bedding types in a beach deposit, an evolving carbonate bank or the changing lithologic fill of a thick geosyncline sequence. We chose to synthesize a vertical profile of a fluvial sandstone body because its characteristics were well documented, much was known about fluvial processes and fluvial-deltaic sandstone bodies constitute an important class of petroleum reservoirs. CHARACTERISTICS AND ORIGIN OF FLUVIAL CYCLE The fluvial cycle has been well documented in recent years by Bersier,2 Allen3-5and Visher.6,7 Deposits from fluvial cycles range from 10 to 150 ft or more in thickness and are characterized by a "fining upwards": coarse sandstones with occasional conglomerates grade upward into medium- to fine-grained sandstone, and hence into siltstone and mudstone. THE Province of British Columbia covers 382,000 sq. mi., about 250,000 sq. mi. of which have not been prospected. In fact, the coast country and the islands are so heavily timbered and the surface covered with so thick a mantle of soil, muskeg, and, over broad areas, glacial drift, that prospecting, and even trail breaking are extremely difficult. It is only along the coast or stream channels, or above the timber line, or where snow or rock slides have scoured the surface that rock outcrops can be found. Glaciers nestle in many of the cirques and fill the valleys in the higher ranges. Great ice sheets and perpetual snow persist in certain localities, thus reducing the exposed areas worth prospecting. Almost the entire country has been subjected to intense glaciation, so that the conspicuous oxidized outcrops of orebodies typical of the south-western United States and Mexico do not exist and surface bodies of enriched or oxidized ore are rare. With few exceptions, the mines1 of the Province are working primary ore. Developments have proved that some of these orebodies are large and important, although usually comparatively low in grade. Besides the few mines that have produced most of the minerals, there are many small mines, but their total output is unimportant. Considering the number of mines and prospects and the widespread mineralization, it is strange that no really great mines, comparable in size and richness with those in the western United States have been found.

(written discussion).-The basic requirement in the electrostatic process of electrical precipitation is that gases containing solid particles in suspension are forced to pass through an electrical field consisting of an insulated high-potential wire, or other type of discharge member, and a grounded plate, or other, type .of collecting member. Commercial. operation and efficiency of precipitation are secured by electrical and structural arrangements to provide the maximum value of the variable factors modifying the degree of precipitation. That is to say: 1. A unidirectional flow, of high-potential current is vastly more effective in precipitation than a high potential alternating-current flow.

Thermal-expansion and electrical-resistivity measurements have been carried out below 400°K on niobium and two niobium alloys containing tungsten. For anonaly in the expansion us temperature curve below aboct 300°K. This reslt is consistent with an earlier obsercation that Young's modilus joy Cb-132 lms an unusiully strong -tenperati-e dependence below roon temperature. No anonulous behavior was observed in the resistiuity vs temperature curve for either alloy or in the magnetic susceptibility us tenperature curve for Cb-132. These results are disclssed in terms of various electronic and bonding theories of the transition metals and their alloys, but it has not been possible to reach any definite conclusion as to the cause of the results obtained. ALONG with investigations of the low-temperature mechanical behavior of niobium and its alloys, some of the physical properties of these materials have also been studied. In the work described here, thermal expansion and electrical resistivity were measured below 400°K for niobium and two of its alloys, Cb-132 and D-43. In addition, the magnetic susceptibility of Cb-132 was measured over the same temperature range. The alloys are representative of two distinct tion-hardened alloy such as might find service as a turbine blade, while D-43 (Nb, 5.3 at. pct W, 1.1 at. pct Zr. and 0.08 at. pct C) is a solution- and dispersion-hardened alloy, of considerably lower strength than Cb-132. which is a potential vane material. Their significant common feature is the presence of tungsten as the principal source of solution hardening. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES Thermal-expansion measurements were made with a quartz-tube dilatometer using baths of liquid nitrogen, liquid bromoethane, and a liquid polyalkylene glycol derivative to cover the range 80 to 400 K. Results are recorded as expansion relative to that of quartz, and the probable maximum error in any value of relative expansion. All, is about il pct. The metallurgical condition of the specimens, which were in rod form. will be discussed in the section dealing with experimental results. Resistivity was measured on recrystallized wires 0.030 in. in diam using a potentiometric technique. The same baths were used for temperatures between 80' and 400°K as were used for the expansion measurements. and in addition the resistance of D-43 and Cb-132 was measured at 4.2 K by immersion in liquid helium. The maximum expected experimental error in any resistivity value is about 3 pct and that in any change in resistivity about i0.05 pct. Temperatures in both sets of experiments were measured with liquid-in-glass thermometers with an accuracy usually better than 1°K. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 1) Thermal Expansion. In Fig. 1 is shown the relative linear expansion of recrystallized niobium. D-43. and Cb-132. The curve for Cb-132 is composed of results from several runs on three different samples. Two of the samples were annealed for an hour at 1500°C to cause recrystallization and the third was annealed for an hour at 2000'C to remove some mi-crosegregation of tungsten which was known to be present in the wrought alloy received from the manu-

IN common with others, the zinc industry found itself after the war largely over-capitalized, a condi-tion which still exists notwithstanding that Tri-State production has doubled since prewar days. This is partly due to the abnormal war demands and partly because of the war impetus given to research, a stim-ulus that because of its success has persisted (and probably will persist) constantly since then. Improved practice and metallurgy resulting from research are today responsible for an increased pro-duction in the Tri-State district of 15 per cent over the practice of five years ago, and the giant strides in this respect in the western states together with the more moderate advance in the Tri-State district has thrown out of equilibrium the more or less balanced production of before the war and production has con-sequently gained on consumption, a condition resulting in rapidly narrowing profits in the Tri-State field, where the present average cost is actually greater than the price received for our product. Despite this condition, no thinking person will de-plore the cause or means used to achieve a greater production and, as this progress is merely the economic application of intelligent thought, it follows that equal effort and thought may be expected to produce the remedy. It has been suggested that the practical application of research has resulted in less need for man-power and consequently in the lessening of employment to common labor and to engineers. I cannot think that such is the case although personally I have received more ap-plications for employment during the last two years than ever before. But when one considers the strides production of all commodities has taken, it is difficult to reconcile this immense development with the possible increase in pop-ulation especially in view of our stringent immigration laws. Whether or not improved industrial methods are responsible for the lessening of employment the ques-tion as to the wisdom of such improvement is hardly debatable. While the Tri-State district of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri continues to be the leading factor in the zinc¬mining industry, gradually lowering prices during 1925 and 1926 and a. decided drop during 1927, have de-creased its production almost 20 per cent, this tonnage having largely been replaced by western concentrates.

It is now generally recognized that to secure the greatest ultimate recovery of petroleum from a field it is necessary to maintain at all times the lowest possible ratio of gas to oil production. The numerous ways of securing low ratios are not so generally understood or practiced. To many operators, reduction of gas-oil ratio simply means "beaning back" wells, with resultant reduced production rate. This postponement of production is often considered and spoken of as "lost" production, with the result that control of gas-oil ratio is in disfavor with some operators. Various methods are herein discussed by which gas-oil ratio may be reduced, some of which invoLve no curtailment of current production, while others are accompanied by an actual increase of daily production. It is further shown that in cases where rate of production is reduced to conserve gas, the indicated ultimate recovery is generally increased. Principles involved are discussed, and conclusions are illustrated by data from the operation of wells. General Principles The rate and ratio in which oil and gas enter a well are solely dependent, so far as the operation of that well is concerned, upon the pressures maintained in the well opposite the producing strata at various times and at various depths. The method of getting the oil out of the hole, whether by natural flow, gas-lift, or pumping, has no effect upon either rate of production or ultimate recovery except through its effect upon pressures. Oil apparently enters wells according to some such equation as the following: R = KC(Pf - Pw)n Where R = rate of production. K = well coefficient, depending upon thickness of sand, and size and number of pores in the sand. C = fluid coefficient, depending upon viscosity, surface tension, etc.

THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus.
