On August 22, 1966, just 20 months after writing sales agreements with Japanese steel mills, Hamersley Iron Pty Ltd made its first contractual shipment of 52,000 tons to Yawata Iron and Steel Co Ltd. As world news, the event was not spectacular. But to mining men it represented an astonishing achievement. Twenty months of feverish effort and the expenditure of more than $100 million had created a large open-pit iron ore mine, a crushing plant, storage and load-out facilities for sized ore, and a supporting township at Mt Tom Price; a 182-mile standard gauge railway; and port and loading facilities for a nominal loading capacity of 6000 tph as well as a port town, Dampier, on King Bay. The project was executed in the sparsely inhabited, arid, dissected-plateau country of the Hamersley Range in the northwest sector of Western Australia. Hamersley, 60% owned by Conzinc RioTinto of Australia Pty Ltd and 40% by Kaiser Steel Corp, holds sale contracts for ore and pellets valued at $770 million. The main contracts are with the Japanese, who are to be supplied with 65.5 million tons of ore during the 16 years from August 1966 to August 1982 and 18 million tons of pellets over a 10-yr period beginning in early 1968. Of lesser importance at this time, but presaging trends, are contracts for a total of nearly 1.5 million tons to be shipped to England and Western Europe during the years 1966-68. A pellet plant with a capacity of 2 million tpy is now under construction at Dampier and is to be on stream early next year. Another interesting project for which the plans are set, is a desalination plant for sea water to supply industrial requirements and potable water for the town of Dampier.

Fujiwara quarry had been operated by the glory-hole benchcut mining system, but as it became difficult to meet expanding demand with this system, a central-shaft mobile crushing plant (MCP) system was introduced in 1979. This MCP is equipped with a hydraulic walking system manufactured for the first time in Japan. Central-shaft mining is now the common mining method of Japanese limestone quarries. With this method, crushing facilities are usually installed at the bottom of the shaft. But at the Fujiwara quarry, MCP was adopted and installed on the quarry surface. Many MCPs are operated in foreign countries, but few examples exist in Japan. Normally, Japanese limestone deposits lie in high mountain, obviously making it inconvenient for MCPs to walk in and around the quarry. This difficulty, however, was overcome, and the MCP has operated satisfactorily and efficiently for two years since its installation. To overcome difficulties in the central-shaft MCP mining system, two mining methods are employed: the slice-down method and the block-cut method.

For four years your Committee has been engaged in the study of problems connected with the educational preparation of professional geophysicists. The Present report represents the conclusions drawn from the investigations and deliberations undertaken since it was first organized. These studies have shown that the evolution of geophysics has proceeded along lines that differed from those marking the advance of classical geology. The latter science developed as a descriptive one, dealing with directly observable terrestrial phenomena, and the elementary, rational explanations that could be offered therefor. The fact that these phenomena were also chemical and physical in nature was seldom given more than passing acknowledgment. During the last half century, however, a new approach to problems of terrestrial phenomena has become of greater significance. This new attack has come through the sciences of physics and chemistry, as the people trained therein have investigated the facts of the earth as problems in their respective sciences. This development has been chiefly at the hands of European investigators, and European universities have long recognized it by establishing departments or institutions of geophysics. In the universities of North America, their arbitrary departmentalization into fields of physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, etc., has prevented the academic recognition of such domains of science as geophysics and geochemistry. In consequence, the development of these subjects in the United States has been largely at the hands of nonacademic institutions, while the universities themselves are evidently in a state of confusion as to how the subject should be handled. In some places an attempt to teach geophysics is made in the physics department, in others in the geology department, in some in the engineering school, and occasionally as a cooperative effort; a Department of Geophysics is seldom found in North America. In some instances, proper academic plan. ning has been precluded by interdepart. mental jealousies, or by lack of appreciation of the significance of the subject. AMONG the genetically interesting iron ores of the United States are those of the St. Francis Mountains near Ironton and Iron Mountain, Missouri. They are specular hematite in porphyry. The Iron Mountain and Shepherd Mountain deposits are generally spoken of as veins and those of Pilot Knob, Cedar Hill, and Russell Mountain as bedded deposits. Iron Mountain has produced nearly 4,000,000 tons of ore and Pilot Knob about 1,500,000 tons. The output of the other three localities has been insignificant. Pilot Knob is no longer worked as an iron mine, but the rock is now being crushed for use as road metal. Iron Mountain has continued as an active producer. In 1927, the property was acquired by the M. A. Hanna Co. and an extensive prospecting and exploration campaign was undertaken, so that the ultimate production of Iron Mountain will doubtless greatly exceed the figures mentioned. Previous Theories of Origin Descriptions of the deposits and theories of their origin have been concerned mainly with Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob, which represent the two contrasting types of occurrence. The Iron Mountain deposits have been considered of close magmatic origin by Whitney' in 18.54, Geijer2 in 1915, and Spurr3 in 1927. Whitney referred to them as of eruptive origin. Geijer considered them fissure fillings at magmatic temperatures. Spurr called them vein dikes formed from ore magma which was essentially fluid iron oxide. Schmidt4 in 1872 ascribed them to fissure filling by thermal chalybeate waters of meteoric origin. Nason5 in 1892 advanced essentially the same explanation. One of the best

The side-blown converter has been investigated as a possible commercial process for the production of low nitrogen steel. During this work, two converters of 3-ton and 22-ton capacity were operated on a pilot plant basis for a total of 214 heats. The steel made in these converters was low in nitrogen and possessed good cold working properties. Some problems of converter operation remain to be solved. IN plants operating with a high iron capacity, sev-eral different refining methods are used in the conversion of the molten pig iron to steel. These include various ore practices in stationary and tilting open-hearths, the duplex process employing the Bessemer converter and open-hearth, and the Bessemer process. At J&L, a considerable part of the iron produced is handled by the Bessemer process, either alone or in conjunction with duplexing, and therefore an appreciable portion of the steelmaking research effort has centered about the method. This paper covers research work on the development of the side-blow converter for the commercial production of low nitrogen ingots and includes descriptions of the operation of a 3-ton and a 22-ton experimental converter at the Aliquippa Works. The refining of iron to produce steel requires the removal of a large portion of the carbon and silicon and the control of manganese, phosphorus and sulphur which are present in the iron in varying amounts. The first large-scale means of refining iron was the acid Bessemer process which was brought into use almost 100 yr ago. This method, using compressed air as the refining medium, accomplishes substantially complete removal of carbon, manganese and silicon. Phosphorus and sulphur are not affected but, by choice of an iron composition sufficiently low in these elements, a commercial product can be produced. Since the process will handle large tonnages rapidly, operates without external fuel and with a minimum of additional equipment, it quickly became the major tool in the early expansion of the steel industry. Later, the basic open-hearth process, by affording control of phosphorus and sulphur and by consuming the large quantities of steel scrap that were becoming available, forced the acid Bessemer process into a secondary position in the industry. During the past two decades the demand for steel to be used in cold forming and drawing operations has gradually increased. Bessemer steel, because of its work hardening and aging characteristics, is not as suitable for these applications as basic open-hearth steel, consequently the decline of the process was accelerated. More recently, because of changing economic conditions, this long range trend appears to have been arrested or perhaps reversed. Ingot production data for recent years furnishes only an incomplete picture of the importance of the converter in the American steel industry; open-hearth furnaces utilize large tonnages of blown metal for which no published statistics are available. Metallurgical Aspects The fundamental difference between Bessemer and open-hearth steels apparently lies not in the method of manufacture but, rather, in the differences in chemical composition of the two steels. It is further believed that the principal features distinguishing Bessemer from open-hearth steel are the higher nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the former. Evidence supporting this position is supplied by tests on laboratory induction furnace heats that were made to contain varying amounts of phosphorus and nitrogen but were otherwise similar to normal low carbon silicon-killed steels. Fig. 1, 2 and 3, summarizing the test results, are taken from G. H. Enzian's paper titled, "Some Effects of Phosphorus and Nitrogen on the Properties of Low Carbon Steels."' Fig. l indicates that phosphorus has a marked effect on the cold work embrittlement of steel as shown by the work brittleness test of Graham and Work.' In the low nitrogen steels, which as a group have the better cold working properties, the effect of phosphorus variations is the more pronounced.

THE purpose of this paper is to describe, in a general way, gold-dredging operations in California, with particular reference to unusual features, including types of deposits and recent attempts to improve the recovery of the gold. Dredging Areas The gold-bearing formations that traversed the western slope of the Sierra Nevadas for a north and south distance of some 300 miles furnished the immediate source of the gold found in most of the placer deposits of California. Erosion through a long period carried the gold, together with various forms of partly disintegrated material, to lower elevations and formed placer deposits. Through the classifying action of water in motion, the coarser gold and heavier material of various kinds were - deposited relatively near the source; consequently, in the higher mountain country, old river channels were worked feverishly during the early California gold-rush days because of their high gold content. With the working out of these known high-grade channels, and from the knowledge thus obtained of prehistoric stream beds, drift mining was started and flourished until about 1890. Even today many drift mines are operating with the objective of opening other old Tertiary river channels that have been covered by volcanic flows. Adjacent to these areas, which contained relatively high gold values in the older river channels, smaller particles of gold, gravel, and debris were deposited along the sides of the former stream beds and on the adjoining flat areas, thus forming the large placer deposits, which were worked principally by hydraulic mining. CAST-STEEL runners, while not interesting from a commercial standpoint, furnish valuable material for microscopic study. Foley1 found not only the usual ingot structure, but zones of Widmannstattian structure, which he explains as due to differential crystallization. The writer, in examining nickel-steel runners, found a type of pro-eutectoid ferrite that is unusual and most probably new. The runner in question was 8.75 cm. (3.5 in.) in diameter and analyzed at its center 2.69 per cent, nickel and 0.350 per cent. carbon and at its edge 2.62 per cent. nickel and 0.359 per cent. carbon. The macrostructure, which is the usual type, is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, which are a cross-section and the longitudinal surface, respectively. Slight segregation of ferrite can be seen near the center of the segment and at other points near the edges of polyhedral grains. Stead's reagent brings out the dendritic structure within the grains as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. This texture is what would be expected of such a steel. Figs. 5 to 10 show the peculiar swirls of pro-eutectoid ferrite, the finding of which prompted this paper. These swirls, or eddies, if such a term can be applied, occur in all parts of- the runner and in all parts of the individual grains. I he tipper left-hand figure shows this ferrite at a grain boundary; the middle left-hand figure shows the inner portion of a grain; and the lower left-hand figure shows these swirls at the edge of a grain which is also the outer edge of the runner. Straight-lined ferrite associated with swirls is found in the areas of Figs. 11 and 12. The texture of the carbon-bearing constituent of the runner is shown to- some extent in Fig. 12, the pearlite being very fine or sorbitic. Higher magnification does not bring out any new features either in the peculiar ferrite or in the pearlite. Figs. 13 and 14, at 240 diameters, show the curved and straight-lined ferrite.

Spencer Gulf takes off from the Great Australian Bight cutting a 200 mile deep wedge of water into the South Australia coastline. A pale winter sun shines yellowly on the choppy surface of this body of water which is progressively more salty as it approaches Port Augusta at the head of the Gulf. Once Port Augusta thrived as a grain port and the speedy clipper ships began or ended their legendary races there. On the eastern shores of Spencer Gulf, farm land spreads away from the water's edge. The western side of the gulf meets marginal grazing land of acacia tree and salt bush. Part way down the gulf, there are two industrial towns facing each other from opposite shores; Port Pirie on the east and Whyalla on the west. These towns are like half brothers, the common parent being the founders of Broken Hill Pty. Ltd., (BHP) who began lead smelting at Port Pirie and discovered iron ore near Whyalla needed for the lead smelting process. The iron deposits later became the inspiration for BHP's iron and steel business.

IN order to secure cupels uniform in size, density, etc., I have arranged a machine which has proved quite satisfactory, and is so simple and inexpensive as to be within the reach of nearly everyone. It has been in operation here about four years, and with it all cupels used in the assay department of the School of Mines have been made. As shown in the accompanying figure, it consists of a common letter-press, the movable platen of which has been removed. In place of the plate, there is attached to the screw a plunger, which turns with the screw, moving up and down, and making the depression in the cupel. The ring holding the bone-ash is held in place directly underneath the plunger by a wooden guide fastened to the base of the press. There is also fastened to the top of the guide for the ring, at a distance above the base of the press equal to the height of the cupel-ring, a piece of mood about § inch thick, under which the ring will just slide into place, and through which there is cut a circular hole exactly fitting the plunger, guiding it in its downward movement always in the same vertical line; this last guide not only directs the plunger, but also prevents the lifting of the ring by the plunger, upon the raising of the latter.

The definition of precipitation-hardening1 is well understood and its principles have been subjected to study for some time. However, the variation of properties with double aging, combined with strain-hardening, gives promise of new and useful phenomena. Properly to understand these distinctions, definitions of these terms are necessary. Precipitation-hardening1.—This reaction usually depends upon an alloy having such a composition that it consists only, or in major part, of but one phase, a solid solution, at a high temperature, so that, upon slow cooling, this solution breaks down into two phases, the solid solution and a compound. By heating the alloy to the temperature for maximum solution of the compound, quenching, and reheating to a suitable lower temperature for critical dispersion precipitation of the compound, useful properties of the alloy may be developed to a maximum. Double Aging.—Dougle aging in part is similar to the process for precipitation-hardening, consisting of heating a precipitation-hardening alloy to the solution temperature, quenching, reheating to the suitable dispersion precipitation temperature, strain-hardening, and again reheating to a suitable temperature to develop certain useful properties to a maximum. The strain-hardening may be induced by two methods: (I) a rate of cooling from the first reheat may suffice to strain the solid solution lattice of the alloy; or (2) the alloy may be cold-worked to a suitable degree between the two reheats. Pkecipitation-hardening of Copper-cobalt-beryllium Alloys1.2 The composition of principal interest is that of 2.6 per cent Co, 0.4 per cent Be, 97 per cent Cu. The alloy has been developed commercially and, with certain reasonable precautions, ordinary brass-foundry practice suffices to produce an alloy of high quality. The two principal attributes of a thickener pulp are its settling rate and the ultimate pulp density of the thickened mud. Testing for evaluation of thickening attributes of a pulp has usually been done batch-wise by placing the pulp in a one-liter glass graduated cylinder and noting the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud as a function of time. Refinements in testing have included repulping a thickened mud to various dilutions and evaluating the settling rate on these various repulped muds. This is considered to make possible an estimate of the settling rate as a function of pulp density and therefore to pinpoint the slowest settling pulp which ought to be critical from the standpoint of thickener plant design. Finally, tests are sometimes made with model-size continuous thickeners of arbitrary size. In batch tests it is generally accepted that the behavior of a pulp is described by a curve such as the one shown in Fig. 1, in which the position of the boundary between clear liquor and mud (the mudline) is plotted against time. It has also been assumed that the initial settling rate (the slope of the line segment AB) is descriptive of the pulp and independent of the size and shape of the container. Where the settling rate is slower and clearly a function of time (portion CD of the settling curve), it has been assumed that the data are not of much use because of the intrusion of compacting phenomena. The next important datum is the height. PE, which is a measure of the so-called ultimate pulp density. This quantity is assumed to be characteristic of the pulp and independent of the container. When actual data are recorded, results are rarely exactly according to this theory and numerous deviations may be noted. For example, some pulps seem to require an appreciable delay before beginning to settle, as in line AF. This is spoken of as representing the need for an induction time for flocculation. It has seemed desirable to explore thickener data with a more sensitive charting tool than is afforded by the coordinates of Fig. 1. Instead of relating the position of the mudline to time, it has seemed desirable to relate the rate of descent of the mudline to time. This, in effect, amounts to charting the slope of the line in Fig. 1, or the derivative of its ordinates, against the same abscissas. Fig. 2 shows the new chart for the curve ABCDE of Fig. 1. When this new tool was applied to data obtained, for example, with sized clay pulps, astonishing differences appeared. Apparently the traditional tool conceals differences instead of revealing them, whereas the new method emphasizes them. It seems, also, that both charting methods have their uses. In this article attention is focused on the effects of pulp density and container height as they affect the settling behavior of flocculated suspensions of a sized kaolin. The thesis by M. C. Fuerstenau' gives more details than this summary, as well as some information about the effect of other variables. Sized fractions of kaolin were used, supplied through the courtesy of S. C. Lyons of the Georgia Kaolin Co. Large batches were made by agitation in a flotation machine and in a glass jar equipped with a mixer. The settling vessels were 2, 4, and 6-in. diam glass cylinders of various heights. Pulp Dilution: The effects of pulp dilution on sedimentation behavior are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Fig. 3 shows data on pulps ranging from 2.44 to 16.7 pct solids initial pulp density, flocculated with Separan and charted in the traditional manner. The experiments described in this paper deal more precisely with stressless corrosion, or "prior-corrosion fatigue,"9 and have been carried out to test such an assumption, to segregate, if possible, the effect of pitting from that of absorbed hydrogen, and although very preliminary in nature they indicate results which are striking.

Recently, the mining community has begun to move toward a more prominent place in the structure of American society. Extensive press coverage of our energy problems during the past year or two has led to an increasing awareness on the part of the public of the vital role that mining must play if today's standard of living is to be maintained. It appears that mining may be emerging from a status generally characterized in the public mind as an esoteric, dirty, man-killing, land- scape-despoiling endeavor, to a new stature that may eventually become as respectable as agriculture. To be sure, we are still being criticized, as has been the lot of miners since the time of Agricola. In fact, the clamor has never been louder. Nevertheless, the public, in increasing numbers, is beginning to know it needs us. But we cannot be complacent. Our improving stature brings along with it increasing responsibility. The mineral industry will be expected to produce mineral raw materials and fuels in ever larger amounts and sell them at reasonable prices, in the face of rising labor costs, decreasing labor availability, chacging labor attitudes, increasingly stringent environmental regulation, stricter health and safety standards, and a deteriorating geo-political climate.

Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.
