Surface mine operators have organized a voluntary group known as the Mined-Land Conservation Conference for the specific purpose of developing and expanding reclamation programs on mined land. As a part of the Conference program, a Voluntary Industry Program was adopted and subscribed to by its membership. This program stated: "The basic approach to a sound conservation program is the restoration of mined land to its most practical and productive use within the shortest possible time . . . reclamation of mined lands, including planting to grasses or tress, should be done on a planned basis, under technical guidance by personnel trained in this field."

This paper is a study of the effects of heterogeneity on flow in an analog of porous media, the Hele-Shaw model. l-3 A set of experiments in heterogeneous Hele-Shaw models showed streamlines through and around heterogeneities of various sizes, shapes and levels. (A level, we define as the ratio between the transmissibility of the heterogeneity and that of the rest of the model.) The heterogeneities were restrictions or expansions of the flow stream analogous to variations in the transmissibility of porous media. The experimental data agreed well with numerical results and with an analytical solution, which we derived for a circular heterogeneity in an infinite field. This study considers the flow-stream distortion due to the shape, size and level of heterogeneities. Size and level are much more important than shape provided the heterogeneity is not long and narrow. Our analytical solution shows that a circular heterogeneity in a large field can be replaced by an equivalent circle of either zero or infinite permeability. The radius of the. equivalent circle is a simple function of size and level of the actual circle. INTRODUCTION With the availability of high-speed computers and numerical procedures to predict reservoir behavior, we are faced with an important question. How much information about the reservoir do we need to justify the cost of the computer in any given case? To answer this question, we have to know how various reservoir parameters affect flow behavior. Reservoir heterogeneity is one of these parameters. In this study, we used a simple, two-dimensional model of porous media, the hele-shaw model, to investigate the effect of heterogeneity on flow behavior. We restricted ourselves to linear, single-phase, steady-state flow in a rectangular field with a single heterogeneity at its center. The analogy between flow in Hele-Shaw models and in porous media is easily verified. Let us first consider a homogeneous Hele-Shaw model with constant plate separation h. (The Hele-Shaw model is constructed by placing two plates, usually glass, very close together and allowing liquid to flow between them. Streamlines are made visible by introducing colored fluid into the space between the plates at a number of points across the model.) We assume a cartesian coordinate system with its origin in the middle between the plates and the z axis directed perpendicular to the glass plates (Fig. 1). The fluid flow is always in a direction parallel to the glass plates and varies from a maximum value to zero in the very small distance from the middle (z = 0) to either plate (z = h/2). For slow motion of an incompressible fluid, neglecting inertia and body forces, we have the viscous flow equation: where p is the fluid pressure, p the viscosity, and v the velocity vector with components u, v and w in the x, y and z directions, respectively. The rates of nucleation and growth at various temperatures in U-0.45, 1.1, and 1.35 at. pet Cr alloys were determined, providing a qliantitative proo-f that the transformation under study is controlled by nucleation and diffusional growth. The linear relationship, log NV US 1/T2, suggests that the nucleation of the alloys is probably controlled by the classical law of nuclei formation. The established linear relationship, log G us 1/T, in the three alloys suggests that growth in each alloy is controlled by bidimensional nuclei formation. It was established that both the rate of growth and the rale of nucleation are retarded by chromium. Using classical formulae, sApN and sApG (the ß/a apparent interphase energies) were calculated from the nucleation and growth results, respectively. It was found that their values are of the same order of magnitude. However, why sApN is unaffected by the addition of chromium, while sApG increases with it, needs further clarification. In the last few years, an appreciable amount of research has been conducted into the mechanism of the ß —a transformation in uranium and uranium alloys. Recently, Burke1 reviewed the published work concerned with this transformation. He concluded that in dilute uranium alloys it is firmly established that, at high temperatures in the a range, ß decomposes by a diffusional process. However, he based his conclusion either on experiments dealing with the over-all transformation,2 or on qualitative results.3 It was felt that a better insight into the mechanism of transformation could be gained from the quantitative measurements of growth and nucleation rates, which we aimed to carry out in the present work. In a previous work,4 we have shown that a rim of a grains is formed during isothermal transformation at the high a range. The thickening of this rim with time was used for measuring the rate of growth in U-0.45 at. pet Cr.5 This method was also used in the present work for two more alloys. For meas- uring the rate of nucleation, a method of quenching and macroetching was developed to allow differentiation between a grains formed during isothermal transformation at the upper a range and those formed after quenching, Fig. 1. IT has been shown in a number of recent publications that much information on the mechanical behavior of metals can be gleaned by first deforming test specimens under one set of conditions, and then evaluating the effect of this deformation by means of a subsequent tensile test. A straining procedure of this type has been applied to study the flow behaviors of a number of metals.1, 2 In these studies the prestraining and testing were both tensile strains, while the straining temperature was varied between the prestraining and testing steps. These data indicate that there is a more or less general flow behavior exhibited by all metals which are pre-stretched at one temperature and then tested in tension at a second temperature. Prestraining a metal at a high temperature produces a lower yield strength during the subsequent low temperature strain than would the same total strain at the lower temperature. On reversing the order of the strains, low temperature prestraining produces a higher yield strength during the subsequent high temperature straining than would a single high temperature strain of the same magnitude. Unlike the flow behaviors, the fracturing characteristics of metals when prestrained under one set of conditions and tested under a second set of conditions is quite material dependent. The fracture behavior of a number of steels2" as well as of a commercially pure zinc,4 have been investigated by these two-step tests and was found to depend upon the position of the transition temperature with respect to the prestraining and testing conditions. Since these fracturing phenomena are complicated by the appearance of the transition temperature, it has been difficult to reliably define the basic effect of a two-step straining procedure in fracturing. Metals crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system do not exhibit transition temperature effects so that the mechanical characteristics obtained on these materials could serve as a base for two-step straining behaviors. Consequently groups of specimens of the aluminum alloy 24s-T4 were prestrained various amounts at room temperature in either tension or compression after which these strained specimens were further strained to failure, or tested in tension, at either room or some lower temperature. Other groups of 24S-T4 specimens were prestretched at various low temperatures after which these were tested in tension at room temperature. These straining techniques then made it possible to compare the behaviors of aluminum with the behaviors previously presented for steels. Material and Procedure The commercial aluminum alloy 24S-T4 in the form of 3/4 in. rods was used in this investigation. The material was subjected to the following treatments before machining: 1—resolution treating at 920" & 10°F for 45 min, 2—quenching in water at room temperature, and 3—aging at room temperature for four days. The re-heat treated material was then machined to either of the specimen shapes shown in Fig. 1. Fig. la shows the threaded-end specimen used for prestraining in compression. Fig. 1b shows the specimen used for both prestrain in tension and final testing. The material subjected to precompression in the form of the specimen shown in Fig. la was re-machined to the specimen shape in Fig. 1b for final testing. Prestraining in tension and final testing were done without any intermediate machining. All straining was performed on a 10,000 1b Riehle tensile testing machine. S. A, Lewisohn's article' has presented the major factors to be considered; the physical suffering and mental torture endured by those who are deprived of income through no fault of their own, the direct economic losses' sustained in the degradation of 'great, numbers of our population and the disintegration of efficient working forces, and the prime responsibility of owners and managers.

The possibility of using a semiconductor, metal, semiconductor structure as a light detector is discussed. A brief theoretical argument is presented which predicts that this structure should have pho-toresponse characteristics similur to those of a metal-semiconductor diode, but with the magnitude of the current increased by a transistor gain factor. Measurements made at low frequencies on a particulur S-M-S device agree u~th this prediction aizd shoul that significant gain factors are attainable. The current gain is substantially higher than that predicted for the metal base transistor. It is proposed that the operation of these units is more closely approxinzated by the metal-gate model which predicts higher current gains. A qualitative discussion of its high-frequency performance indicates that detection of light modulated at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S deuice is possible. ADVANCES in the technology of chemical vapor deposition'-4 have made it possible to form a S-M-S structure consisting of a thin metallic layer sandwiched between layers of single-crystal semiconductor. It has been proposed5-7 that, if the metal layer is made sufficiently thin, this structure could be used in an amplifier having several advantages over presently available transistors including higher-frequency performance. Calculations8 predict that the maximum gain-bandwidth product is nearly an order of magnitude higher than that of a bipolar transistor having the same geometry. Maximum oscillating frequencies in the microwave range are predicted. Electrical measurements made on S-M-S devices have shown that, although the theoretical frequency characteristics are not presently attainable, current and power gain is obtained. Another possible application of the S-M-S structure is its use in a light detector. This structure is a three-layer relative of the metal-semiconductor diode. Light detection using M-S diodes is the subject of considerable present interest. They are known to have a short response time and the ability to detect light having a photon energy below the semiconductor bandgap. In this paper, the mechanism by which S-M-S photocurrent is generated is discussed. An expression is derived which shows that the response characteristics are similar to those of a M-S diode, but that the magnitude of the current is increased due to the transistorlike behavior of the device. The results of low-frequency response measurements on a particular S-M-S structure are presented. These agree with the theoretical predictions and show that significant gain factors are attainable. A qualitative discussion of the high-frequency characteristics is presented which predicts that detection of light at microwave frequencies by a S-M-S device is possible. THEORY In this discussion, the photocurrent, iT, measured across terminals attached to the semiconductor emitter and collector layers is related to the current pho-toemitted from the metal base layer. The latter will be referred to as the primary photocurrent. The behavior of the primary photocurrent is determined by the characteristics of the two metal-semiconductor diodes. The diode photoemission is illustrated in Fig. 1, which shows the emitter and collector potential barriers. The metal thickness has been greatly exaggerated. As will be discussed later, the actual barrier shape can be much more complex, but this diagram illustrates the essential features of the photoemission process. It is generally recognized to date that a rational stability analysis of slopes and foundations in rock masses is a desirable but still rather remote goal of rock mechanics.1 In principle, a slope analysis is possible provided the original state of effective stress in the ground is known and the shear strength of the earth material can be clearly defined. In a macroscopically continuous earth medium such as soil, the two basic ingredients of the stability analysis in most cases can be assessed with sufficient approximation. A much less favorable situation exists when the slope is composed of a macroscopically discontinuous medium such as rock mass containing one or more sets of geological planar structures. In such a case, both the original effective stresses and the overall shear strength of the mass are much more difficult to determine. As for the former, it is only recently that certain calculation methods and solutions concerning the stress distribution2 and the seepage forces3 in a discontinuous medium have been proposed. As the strength behavior of the rock mass is concerned, much valuable effort has been made in recent years toward reaching a proper understanding of the phenomenon of rock mass failure under stress. Probably one of the most complete investigations of the problem to date has recently been made at the University of Illinois. The study resulted in establishing a first useful working hypothesis of the shear behavior of a regularly jointed rock mass, proposed by Patton in 1966.4 The main purpose of the work described in this chapter is to establish a more general framework for the shear behavior of rock mass, one that would be directly related to some basic rock parameters and would also

Some months ago a gentleman gave me a handful of minerals which he had collected in an arroyo, or dry stream-bed, that ran through the town of Ramos, State of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, as a sample of the class of ore that might be expected in the mines of that section. I was, however, familiar with those mines and their ores, and cast the pebbles aside as of no interest. I afterwards returned to Mexico and took charge of two groups of mines, one in the State of Zacatecas, and the other in the town of Ramos, State of San Luis Potosi. While I was thus engaged, it was a very frequent occurrence for parties to bring me specimens of rock, ores, etc., for my opinion on them; and one day a man brought me a half-dozen or more small pieces of a very black shiny mineral, desiring to know what it was. I did not recognize it, and desired him to give me the specimens for analysis, which he promised to do in a day or two. He never did give them to me, for he lost them ; but he said there were plenty more where these came from—at Ramos—and he could get them at any time for me. I thought no more of the matter until after my return to this country, when, one day, in looking over some of my old " trash," I came across the specimens at first referred to as having been cast aside so carelessly. I noticed two distinct minerals among the pebbles : one being erubescite or tetrahedrite, the predominating mineral of the mines of Ramos, and the other a hard black shining mineral, the same that I had wished to analyze in Mexico. On testing for hardness I was surprised that it scratched topaz with some degree of ease, thus placing it above 8 in the scale of hardness. Trying it with a corundum, I sometimes succeeded in scratching it, but at other times it would scratch the corundum, and at still other times neither would produce the slightest effect on the other. Crystallized topaz would be ground to a powder in attempting to scratch the black mineral, without abrading it in the slightest. It must, therefore, be placed at 9 in the scale of hardness. Crude or Crude Iron The name crude or crude iron is recommended for the iron produced from ore by the blast furnace. When necessary it can be specified as pig iron when in the form of pigs (usually cold), or as molten iron, commonly called hot metal to distinguish it from cold iron in pigs. The product of a direct process of making wrought or malleable iron from ore is not included.

THE Wednesday morning session was devoted entirely to the consideration of the tentative code for coal mine ventilation. A. W. Hesse is chairman of this subcommittee. E. A. Holbrook presided at the session and assisted by A. W. Hesse and George S. Rice, gave the historical background of the movement for a ventilation code. They stressed the point that this was to be an engineer's code, and that it was hoped that it might serve as a valuable guide to operating companies in securing greater efficiency as well as safety in ventilation. The discussion was continued into the afternoon session, and by adjournment the entire' code had been covered.' Many sections were referred back to the Committee for further study and several new sections were suggested. The various opinions and new ideas brought out during the discussion proved very valuable and. contributed much to the progress being made in the preparation of this code.

THE cosmic ray continues to engage the attention of the physicists, and according to Millikan and Compton, experiments of the past summer indicate that these rays must come from interstellar space, but not from the stars themselves. According to press reports of the International Congress of Physicists at Rome, the view was given there that these rays have an initiating potential of over 750,000.000 volts. In the field of spectrographic investigation great strides have been made. The U. S. Naval Research Laboratories (R. F. Mehl and G. E. Doan of Lehigh) have just finished a year's work with a "radium torch" or "shadowgraphic apparatus" in the field of the X-ray, that bids fair to displace the latter to a great extent. The torch is more powerful., easier to operate and cheaper. Penetration of 10 in. of steel has been accomplished, which. is much -beyond the- -scope-, of the X-ray..

As legislation to minimize pollution in effluent streams becomes stricter, it is important to treat used acid pickling baths before discharge. This is usually achieved by neutralization of the acids and precipitation of the dissolved metals in such a way that neither acids nor metals can be re-used. A process has been designed and tested on a pilot plant scale to recover both acids and metals from a stainless steel pickling bath leaving only Na2SOs in the effluent. In this process, H2SOr is added to the spent pickling liquor and the recovery of the pickling acids HN03 and HF is achieved by solvent extraction, using TBP in kerosene as the organic solvent. The extracted acids are stripped with water, giving an acid concentration high enough for direct use in the pickling bath. Molybdenum is also extracted by TBP and is recovered in a separate step. The other metals, Fe, Cr and Ni, are precipitated from the raffinate as hydroxides, dried and recycled to the metal process. In evaluating this process, comparative experiments with mixer-settler and pulsed column have been performed. The process described is being considered for use by a Swedish company pickling 70,000 tons per annum of stainless steel.

The production of all Russian fields incressed from approsimatctly 74,000,000 bbl. during 1926-27, to approximately 83,000,000 bbl. during 1927-28. Of this amount Baku was responsible for 54,.500,000 bbl., Grozny for 25,800,000 bbl., and Emba for 1,200,000 bbl. Accordingly, the proportional importance of the Grozny oil field has been considerably increased, the present production being twice that of 1913. The most notable factor of production during 1927-28 was the importance of gushers; 40.8 per cent. of the total was thus obtained. In the Baku fields 26 per cent. of the total, and in Grozny 74.2 percent'. of the total were produced by naturally flowing wells. This may be explained by the reduction in authorizations for drilling by the central authorities, and, accordingly, the local trusts increased the production to the planned figures at the expense of the proved prolific reserves. In Baku region, the Surnkany oil field produced 36.1 per cent. of the total Baku production, or an equivalent of 53,800 bbl. per clay, the largest percentage coining from the fifth horizon. Nest year's plans call for continual development of that horizon as well as of the sixteenth horizon in the Bibi-Eibat field, which was opened lately. In the Grozny fields the New Area (Bellik) WAS responsible for 79.4 per cent. of the total production. The authorized plan for 1928-29 production calls for 92,200,000 bid., and a reasonably accurate estimate for 1932--33 production is placed at. 156,000,000 bbl., with Baku contributing 101,800,000 bbl., Grozny 44,100,000 bbl., Emba 6,200,000 bbl., Kuban 2,100,000 bbl., Saghalien Island 1,400,000 bbl., and Russian Turkestan 400,000 bbl. In connection with recent discoverices in the Baku area these figures art. quite conservative. The average production per well per day in the Baku oil fields was 49.2 bbl., in Grozny 175 bbl.; in detail, Surakany oil field averaged 250 bbl., and the New Area in Grozny 514 bbl. per day. New completions in all Baku fields averaged 264 bbl. per day, and in Grozny 970 bbl. pel. day. These figures show a considerable progress in the technical developnlent of all fields, compared even with the prerevolution figures, since all the mprovements are noted in the fields that arc over 30 years old.

WHEN a deformed polpcrystalline metal is heated to a sufficiently high temperature, a recrystallized structure develops which consists of small, essentially stress-free grains. This transformation is referred to as primary recrystallization. Under certain conditions, on prolonged annealing of the specimens, a type of grain coarsening occurs in which a small number of grains commence to grow at various points by devouring the neighboring finegrained primary structure, which, in itself, exhibits a marked stability toward normal grain growth. This grain coarsening process has been referred to by Burgers' as "secondary recrystallization" or "exaggerated grain growth." Although much work has been done on recrystallization and growth processes, present knowledge of the factors which determine the occurrence and growth of secondary grains is inadequate for the advancement of a theory which accounts for the observed characteristics of this recrystallization phenomenon. In this respect, it would be important to make measurements of the velocity of growth of these large secondary grains. The early work of Feitnecht2 on aluminum showed that the size of secondary grains increased with temperature and time, suggesting that such measurements would be possible. More recently, Burgers1 found that the growth velocity of these grains in aluminum was constant over a large time interval, as is generally found for the growth velocity of primary grains in a uniformly deformed test piece.3-5 It is reasonable to expect that the determination of the activation energy of the secondary growth process might lead to a better understanding of the underlying atomic mechanism. This investigation, therefore, is one of a series primarily designed to measure the growth velocity of secondary grains at various temperatures for silver, copper, and aluminum. It is hoped that these studies along with those of orientation relationships, will establish a sound basis for theorizing as to the origin and nature of the secondary transformation. Experimental Procedure The metal used in the present investigation was high-purity silver (999.9 fine), which was supplied in the form of cold-rolled plates 0.250 in. thick. These plates were annealed at 500°C for 1 hr and then straight-rolled to a thickness of 0.04 in. in three reductions of approximately 45 pct, followed in each case by an anneal at 450°C for 1/2 hr. The 0.04 in. sheets were given a final reduction of approximately 50 pct, which resulted in a thickness of 0.02 in., thereby insuring two-dimensional crystal growth. Individual specimens of this material about 1x3 cm were used for all heat treatments, unless otherwise noted. The annealing was carried out under an atmosphere of argon in an Inconel tube furnace whose temperature was controlled to within -+2°C. Metallographic examination of the secondary transformation was accomplished by mechanically polishing the specimens on one side to approximately one half their thickness through 2/0 metallographic emery paper, and then electrolytically polishing in a solution of potassium ferrocyanide and sodium cyanide. With a current density of approximately 20 amp per sq dm, the time required to obtain a satisfactory surface varied from 3 to 5 min. Standard potassium bichromate was used to etch the electrolytically polished surfaces. A heavy etch with this solution produced a sharp contrast between the secondary grains and the fine-grained primary structure, darkening the latter while leaving the large secondary grains bright. All area measurements of the secondary crystals were made with a planimeter on enlarged tracings of the grains.

Starting-- from Cu-Si diffusion couples a study of diffusion in the intermetallic compound Cu3Si of the Cu-Si system has been made. Mmker experiments showed copper to be the diffusing element. From the rate of growth of the Cu3Si phase diffusion coefficients were derived. The activation energy for diffusion is 18.6 kcal per mole. The couples show some interesting microscopic features, for which a tentative explanation is given. THE synthesis of dimethyldichlorosilane, (CH3)2SiC12, an important compound in the manufacture of methyl-silicones, takes place at the surface of a thin Cu3Si layer deposited on a mass of silicon particles."' By passing CH3C1 vapor at about 350°C, silicon atoms are consumed from Cu3Si in forming the volatile silane molecules, thus leaving copper atoms at the surface. It is well-known that copper acts as a poison for the above-mentioned reaction by catalyzing the dissociation of methylchloride.' However, no poisonous effect is observed, at least not before most of the silicon from the particles is converted into silane.3 This would be understandable, if either the copper atoms diffuse through the Cu3Si deposit to the underlying silicon or silicon atoms diffuse in the reverse direction to the copper, both processes resulting in the formation of new Cu3Si and so ensuring the proceeding of the reaction. In this paper experiments are described, demonstrating copper to be the diffusing element. Also a very low activation energy for the diffusion is observed. EXPERIMENTAL The silicon used contained 1 ppm Mg and 1 ppm Cu; the copper was spectroscopically pure (Fe: 2 ppm; Ag, Mg, Si: 1 ppm). The copper and silicon samples were prepared in the form of blocks of approximately 10 by 10 by 5 mm with two parallel sides by spark-machining. The blocks were ground on emery paper (grit 600), etched (copper with nitric acid, silicon with a 4:l nitric acid:hydrofluoric acid mixture), and cleaned with alcohol. As the brittleness of the silicon did not allow a welding procedure to prepare the diffusion couples, the copper and silicon blocks were pressed together in a steel clamp. The pressure exerted by the clamp brought about contact between the parts of the couple and so ensured proceeding of the diffusion. The couples were heated in a vacuum furnace (about 10"5 Torr). The temperature was stabilized within 1 pct. After a heat treatment a section parallel to the direction of diffusion was examined in the microscope and in the X-ray scanning microanalyzer. To determine whether copper or silicon is the diffusing element marker experiments were carried out using tungsten wires with a 20-p diam. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4 give micrographs of diffusion zones of Cu/Si couples. Analysis by the electron mi-croprobe of the Cu/Si samples after a definite heat treatment revealed the existence of only one intermetallic phase as can be seen from the line scan shown in Fig. 5. From the X-ray diffraction pattern it could be deduced that this phase was CU 3 Si.4 Even when diffusion zones of considerable width (up to 600 p) were obtained, no other phases occurring in the Cu-Si system could be detected, neither by the electron microprobe nor by X-ray diffraction analysis. In the fall of 1969, ASARCO and Newmont Mining Co. began the design of the 700tpd concentrator at their Black Cloud shaft located near Leadville, Colo. The concentractor would treat by flotation a Pb-Zn-Ag ore containing minor gold values. Flowsheet design was based on laboratory test work performed at the Minerals Research Testing Laboratory of ASARCO. Since the concentrator is located at an elevation of 11,000 ft, cold weather was a major factor in design considerations. The original capacity was designed as 700 tpd but for various reasons an ultimate capacity of 1,000 tpd was desired. This necessitated special consideration in the design of several areas, particularly the grinding circuit. The grinding circuit chosen was a single 9 X 12 ball mill operating in closed circuit with one 20-in. cyclone. The ball mill will operate at low speed and as an overflow type originally. The mill can be speeded up and converted to grate type for handling the larger tonnage when required. Thickeners and filters were oversized and space was left for additional flotation cells in order to handle the increased tonnage in these areas. Pumps were sized so that they could handle the increased tonnage by increasing their speed. Construction began in May 1970; the Black Cloud concentrator went on-stream in April 1791.
