THE growing need of better methods for the recovery of zinc and other elements from complex sulfide ores has suggested an inquiry respecting a possible group separation of the elements by the aid of volatilization at more or less elevated temperatures. It 'is evident that if the zinc content of such ores can be completely separated, for instance, as pure oxide, by a volatilization 'method, there should be no difficulty in recovering the other elements by smelting and refining. Zinc burning" as applied to zinkiferous ores has advanced but little in practice since the invention of the wetherill grate-furnace process in 1852, as may be seen by reference to papers on the subject.' In other words the thermochemical reaction employed in effecting the volatilization of the zinc is essentially one of reduction by means of carbon, whether the ores treated contain their zinc in an oxidized form, or as the sulfide. The zinc vapors, liberated from the ores at a temperature above that required for the reduction of ZnO by C (about ,1100° C.) or for the volatilization of ZnS per se, (about' 1300°-1400° C.) are subsequently burned to ZnO or to ZnO + SOz, by contact with' atmospheric ,oxygen in the upper or posterior parts of the furnace chamber, or in a so-called "combustion chamber" after leaving the .furnace proper.

Vapor transport experiments have been carried out in order to determine the saturation solubility of carbon in cobalt and nickel with respect to graphite over a large temperature range. Some of the uncertainty existing in the thermodynamics of these systems has been removed and accurate estimates of the heat and entropy of solution of carbon in nickel and cobalt have been deduced. The relatitle partial entropies of carbon are considered to be predominantly vibrational in origin. ALTHOUGH the thermodynamic properties of solid solutions of carbon in cobalt and in nickel have been investigated previously, the results of these investigations show a marked lack of agreement amongst themselves. In this investigation simple vapor transport experiments have been undertaken in order to measure the temperature variation of the saturation solubility of carbon in nickel and cobalt with the object of removing to some degree the uncertainties in the thermodynamics of these systems. In the case of the C-Co system, early measurements of the saturation solubility of graphite in Co show results at the same temperature differing by almost an order of magnitude.1-5 Recently Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert6 measured the equilibrium between CH4-H2 mixtures and C-Co solid solutions at five temperatures ranging from 850° to 1050°C. Their values of the activity of carbon in the solid solution, deduced from a knowledge of the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas, varies linearly with composition at each temperature and the authors concluded that the solutions were Henryan. The saturation solubilities deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's measurements are in good agreement with the solubility determined at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson7 and the value at 1000°C deduced from the measurements of smith8 on the equilibrium between CO/CO2 mixtures and C-Co solutions. The object of this investigation was to check the results of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert and also to extend the range of solubility data to higher temperatures. In the case of the C-Ni system, there is fairly good agreement between the values given by schaefer9 for the saturation solubility of carbon C, in nickel, the value given at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson,7 and that deduced from Smith's8 measurements of the equilibrium between C-Ni solutions and CO/CO2 mixtures at 1000°C. The values of C, deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's6 measurements of the carbon activity in nickel are also in fairly good agreement. However, there is a large discrepancy between the above set of measurements and those of Lander, Kern, and Beach," who measured the carbon solubility of nickel in equilibrium with graphite by depositing an excess of graphite on the surface of Ni-foils from a gaseous mixture and subsequently diffusing in the carbon. These results are considerably higher than those mentioned above. The determinations6 of carbon activity a, in nickel from the CH4-H2 equilibrium showed that at all the temperatures investigated, the ac-values varied linearly with concentration up to about a, = 0.6 and then began to increase with concentration much more rapidly. On the basis of auxiliary experiments in which C-Ni solutions were equilibrated with graphite, Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert concluded that their CH4-H2 solid equilibrations at high values of a, were spurious and a, behaved linearly with composition up to the saturation limit (a, = 1). The short linear extrapolations of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's a, data yield values of C, in good agreement with those of Lander, Kern, and Beach." The solubility data for nickel discussed here is presented in Fig. 1 in the form of plots of ln[Cc/(l - 2cc)] vs 1/T. The discrepancies mentioned are clearly seen. INTRODUCTION Certain rock types can be fractured thermally by spallation and thermal cracking. Spalling occurs in the regions subjected to thermal shock temperatures and cracking takes place in the adjacent cooler regions. The analysis of the heat-affected zones requires that heat transfer calculations be made where the thermal conductivity of the rock is a function of temperature and direction. Generally, accurate thermal conductivity data is not available for the high temperatures and rise rates associated with most thermal rock breaking methods. This paper describes a method for determining the thermal conductivity of an orthotropic material whose conductivity is a linear function of temperature. The necessary data is obtained from one test which makes it especially useful for in situ applications. The properties data are determined through an iterative process of comparing theoretically computed values of temperature for assumed conductivity parameters with data measured in the laboratory. The conductivity of the rock is determined when the results of the assumed parameters yield computed temperatures which agree with those obtained experimentally. Transient temperatures are computed using the explicit numerical method at given points in a three-dimensional semi-infinite solid whose surface is symmetrically heated on a circular spot. The thermal conductivity is assumed to be a linear function K = [a] + Bt; however, if necessary, any reasonable linear or non-linear function might just as well be used. In estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end of its life, or to return the capital involved when the earningpower of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the 'number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compouiid interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time—usually once a year—and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows : Let S = total amount to be retired, Let T = interest rate : R = 1 + r, Let n = life of tlie sinking-fund or the amortization-period, Let L = the sum set aside at the end of each year. Then the amouilt of the sinking-fund at the end of first year is 2, which at the end of n years will have illcreased by compound interest to IRn-l. WHAT are known as insulating firebrick are lightweight firebrick with low thermal conductivity designed primarily for use in direct contact with furnace gases. These are a recent development in the refractories industry, and are really an outgrowth of the type of insulating brick suitable for use behind refractory walls developed by the insulation manufacturers. To differentiate between these two types of brick, the manufacturers have recently agreed upon the use of the term "Insulating Firebrick" to apply to the type of brick suited for use in direct contact with furnace gases, and the term "Insulating Brick" for the type suitable for use behind refractory walls. Insulation was applied to steam pipes as far back as 1900. This was a low-temperature insulation, the most common type being magnesia blocks. The next development was applying insulation to the outside of furnace walls, a service which necessitated an insulating material of higher temperature resistance. Natural diatomaceous earth, both in the powdered and brick form, was used; this was efficient and is still used extensively for backing up refractory walls where the inner surface temperature of the insulation does not exceed 1600° F.

INE operators have a choice of several classi- fications of mechanical loaders. Within each classification there are many types and makes available. Table I lists loaders on which manufacturing data as to operating characteristics are available. This paper discusses the conditions met in a mine as they affect these characteristics. It is assumed that management will provide satisfactory engineering, supervision, power, maintenance, loader service within a concentration of workings, and a balanced working cycle served by balanced production equipment. These are factors which affect the optimum operational efficiency of a loader. The conditions which determine loader choice are: Height of Vein—The main limitation to the use of a loading machine is the height to which the vein is mined; i.e. a loader cannot be higher than the place in which it is to work unless rock is taken. Since there are several low vein loaders being developed and successfully applied, this does not appear to be a requisite of an efficient mining operation. The maximum useable height of a loader should be equal to the working seam thickness less a working clearance for travel and operation. A—Working seam thickness = B—Artificial roof support thickness = C—Safe headroom below support = (generally about 6 in.) D—Height of roadway = E—Total of B + C f D =_______________________ A—E = maximum loader height F—Distance from top of roadway to bottom of roof support = G—-Height of loader's coal or ore line (see Table I) = H—Difference between F and G = Size of largest broken particle + a safety factor of 2 to 3 in. H is a loadability factor and is important because the clearance over the top of the conveyor chain to the roof or roof support must be greater than the largest broken particle or else the particle and/or the conveyor chain may be broken. From this standpoint it might be desirable to use a lower height machine even though it may have a smaller capacity, though this is warranted only when increased lump realization offsets lower man-day and machine pro- duction rates. Ivan Given has stated, "Loading should not be handicapped by securing lump only to grind it in the breaker." Width of Working Place—The width of a working place is the greatest width a place may be safely driven. The working place includes not only the face but the roads the loader must tram when mucking out more than one face. The width is limited by the system of placing props with sufficient room between them for the machine runner (about 2 ft). Maximum width of place in which the loader will operate at maximum efficiency is determined by the type of mounting. With track-mounted loaders, maximum width of place is determined by maximum angular swing of the loading head and proximity of track to the face. The use of double track leads to added expense and operational complexities. Several mines that have used double-track systems have found that a substantial saving is made by the use of machines that load out wider places. Trackless loaders may work in rooms of any maximum width. Minimum width of place in which a loader will operate is determined by width of the loader plus a safe movement area for the operator. Often a barodynamic study of the mine will show that either an increase in room width and/or a change in the system of propping may be made by using roof bolting, full or part-width room timbers, removable aluminum I-beams at the face, etc. Increasing the width of a working place will, in general, increase loader operating efficiency by providing more material per fall and by decreasing the preparation and moving time per ton. A change in the system of propping that would increase the minimum width might permit the use of a higher capacity loader with safer working conditions. Proper face tirnbering is necessary to insure safety from roof falls and because the speed of preparation and loading generally increases since the men work with greater assurance and there is less chance of kicking out posts. In the sinking of bore holes, there are but two fundamental operations —drilling and hoisting—which determine in the main the character of drilling mechanism and structures. There are endless ramifications, however, in the execution of these fundamental operations, according to the purposes for which the bore holes are drilled, their maintenance after completion, the protection and convenience of workmen, etc. The three main lines of use for bore holes are in mineral exploration, the sinking of water and salt wells, and the exploitation of pqtroleum and natural gas. This paper has to do more especially with the last. Here again there are many divergences. Wells may be drilled by either the percussive, the hydraulic, or the abrasive method. Finally, each of these methods, as applied by drillers of diverse nationalities, has followed somewhat different lines of development. The American system of cable-tool drilling has perhaps had the widest application; the hydraulic rotary is also in extensive use; but the Canadian system, the Galician system, and the Russian free-fall system all have their points of recognized merit and are preferred by operators accustomed to their use. These differences in drilling procedure, which rest ultimately on essential variations in geological conditions, are reflected in the drilling structures as well as in the drilling mechanism. The purpose of the present paper is to record those stages in the development of the application of steel to the construction of drilling mechanism and structures with which the writer has been intimately associated, and to contribute to the history of the art of drilling other data acquired in the course of his personal investigations. It is necessarily limited by reason of space to American practice, with especial reference, therefore, to the cable-tool system and the hydraulic rotary method of drilling wells for oil and gas.

The Denver Mining Research Center headquartered at Denver, Colo., is typical of the new research units recently activated as a result of increased emphasis by the U. S. Bureau of Mines on research concerned with metal and nonmetal (except mineral fuels) ore extraction. The Denver Center, together with the recently established Minneapolis Research Center and the Offices of Mining Research at Reno and Spokane, and the older, well-known Applied Physics Research Laboratory at College Park, Md., share the responsibility for the comprehensive mining research program. The Denver Center specializes in two areas of research: (1) The development of engineering principles and mathematical techniques applicable to exploration, development and operational problems in mining, and (2) the study of rock mechanics as applied to ground control. The first area presently includes three categories: research on methods of ore sampling, mine-systems analysis, and applications of statistics to problems of mineral exploration. The second area emphasizes research in two main categories: laboratory investigations designed to develop a fuller understanding of how rock be- haves under the loads imposed by mining, and field investigations to evaluate stress-strength relation- ships in full-scale, operating mines.

THE flow characteristics of drilling muds, as described in this paper, and the method given for solving problems relating to the flow of these muds through pipe and accessory equipment, are based on a conception that drilling muds are plastic solids like paints or greases; not liquids. The data presented in this report have been obtained from studies of California muds, chiefly those used in the Kettleman Hills field, by the Producing Department of the Standard Oil Company of California. Although no claim of scientific exactness is made for the formulas and diagrams, since the data upon which they are based, are not. complete even for California muds, the method has proved to be a convenient means for estimating, closely enough for practical purposes, the pressures required to force muds at various rates through pipe systems in which they are handled. Certain approximations have been made to simplify the procedures so that they can be used easily in the field.

INTRODUCTION. THE Park City mining-district is distinctively a camp of few properties, 5,000 acres, or one-third of the entire district, being under the management of but three companies. As a rule, the ore-bodies lie deep, with no outcrop, except where erosion has formed the deeper canyons and gulches. Ontario canyon exposed the famous Ontario ledge, and Woodside gulch showed the first ore of the Silver King Coalition mine. The Quincy ore-bodies were first brought to light in upper Empire canyon, and Thaynes canyon was instrumental in aiding the prospector during the early days of the camp. There are 22 shafts which have reached a depth of at least 500 ft., ten a depth of 1,000 ft., five a depth of 1,300 ft., and two a depth of 2,000 ft. The amount of lateral development has been proportionally extensive, including six long tunnels, four of which are in 3 miles, with a fifth now being driven. The Ontario lower drain-tunnel is now more than 4 miles long. The formations are sedimentary, dipping about 30° NW. and N., and traversed by many fissures, dikes, and faults. The principal ore-bodies are found associated either with the contact of the basal Ontario quartzite and the overlying limes, or on a quartzite stratum within the limes, or in the fissures, or along some of the porphyry dikes. The district covers the intersection of the Uintah and Wasatch ranges, which explains the existence of large folds and faults, and fissures of great length, width, and depth. In a general way, the geology of the district consists of a basal quartzite dome, which has been exposed by erosion at the Ontario property. The Ontario fissure lies entirely within this formation. DURING a session on coal and coke at the February, 1926, meeting of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, the writer called attention to the important work on the X-ray analysis of coal1,2 being carried on in England by C. Norman Kemp and his associates. This aroused so much interest that a paper on the subject was requested for the October meeting. It has seemed advisable to make this paper a preliminary survey of the present status in the application of X-ray methods to coal problems and to follow it from time to time with further articles as the art develops. A survey of this sort naturally divides itself into two parts, radioscopic analysis of the distribution of constituents through the body of the coal, and diffraction analysis of the state of association of the elementary components. In this article the subject matter concerning radioscopic analysis has been drawn almost entirely from the writings of Kemp and his associates and the illustrations have been specially furnished by him. It is a pleasure to record here a great indebtedness for this courtesy and cooperation. The subject matter and illustrations concerning diffraction analysis are taken from the author's unpublished researches.

The Hallimond tube flotation of sphalerite and pyrite with sulfhydryl collectors has been found to be inhibited near neutral pH in the presence of copper salts. Alkalimetric titration studies of the reactions between collector and activator indicate that this effect is apparently related to the formation of basic copper collector complexes. The conditions of formation of these compounds and their stability are in good agreement with the depression observed in flotation experiments. The general procedure employed in the flotation of zinc sulfide minerals requires activation of the mineral surface by heavy metal ions, usually copper, which react more easily than zinc with the common short-chain ionic sulfhydryl collectors.' Commercially, zinc flotation is carried out under alkaline conditions (pH 7 to 10.5), but small-scale experiments indicate that zinc sulfide minerals can also be activated and collected under acid conditions. Selectivity, however, becomes poor at low pH and undesirable materials such as pyrite, silicates and carbonates tend to report in the float. Several years ago, Wark and Sutherland~, measured the contact angles of air bubbles on copper-activated sphalerite immersed in various sulfhydryl collector solutions. THERE are three primary plant nutrients—nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium—expressed in any fertilizer compound as percent N, percent P 2 O 5, and percent K 2 O, in that order. This article will be concerned with the first two. The chief source of P 2 O 5 is phosphate rock. As found in the western states phosphate rock is essentially tricalcium phosphate-calcium fluoride (fluor-patite). As such, it is quite water insoluble.

THE investigation of domestic tales was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama, at the request of the U. S. Army, on Dec. I, 1941: "Considerable concern has been expressed by the Supply Arms and Service over maintaining continued availability of supplies of the necessary raw materials. These ceramic products are used by the Signal Corps in all army radio equipment, and to a greater degree in the new ultra-high-frequency equipment. The Air Corps has become a user of large amounts of radio-grade ceramics for aircraft spark-plug covers required for high-altitude operations. In addition, the use of this material is essential to the proper functioning of the radio air-navigation aids of the Civil Aeronautics Board." HISTORY The use of steatite and talc in ceramic bodies goes back a great many years. If pure, tales shrink little under heat-treatment and are very resistant to heat shock. The massive form, commonly called "steatite" by the trade, cuts and works easily, and this was naturally the first method used in obtaining articles of talc. When gas was in general use for illuminating purposes, a large business was carried on in the manufacture of tips for gas burners.1 With the development of uses for electricity, low-tension insulators were made in a similar manner; and, in fact, the forming of shapes from massive talc continues. However, as the business increased, cuttings and waste became more and more of a problem. In the twenties, one of the larger producing firms had a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Mines at its Columbus station to work out a body using the finely powdered material. Somewhat earlier, manufacturers of spark plugs used the finely ground talc as part of the body and to some extent in wall-tile bodies. Somewhat later it came into use for kiln furniture and similar products and still more recently it has been used in some dinnerwares. With the development of the radio and the high-frequency fields generated, it was found that a dense steatite porcelain was far better than even high-tension electrical porcelain, which is a clay-flint-feldspathic type of body. Until the war increased the demand, the several pioneer steatite-porcelain manufacturers were able to furnish adequate supplies. When war began in Europe and Asia, three important foreign sources of raw material were cut off; i.e., the French, Italian, and Manchurian tales. INTRODUCTION THE object of this paper is to discuss the factors and conditions that affect the observed values of the melting points of refractory materials and to describe practical methods for the determination of these points. While it appeared to be necessary to discuss some of the general properties of silicates and refractories, these subjects have been entered into only in so far as they relate to the melting point and its determination. Refractory materials such as fireclays, firebricks, and minerals generally, may be considered to be composed of compounds of metallic oxides, solid solutions of the oxides, the pure oxides, or mixtures of the three classes together with small amounts of a variety of chemical compounds. The oxides of silica and alumina occur most commonly in refractory materials; in combination with. these, oxides of the alkali earth, the alkali, the iron group, and the rare earth metals are frequently found.

The most extensive oil shale development program ever undertaken in the United States has been that carried out by Colony Development Operation at Para- chute Creek in western Colorado. Field development goals were completed this spring, with the remainder of the $24 million joint venture program, primarily engineering, environmental and economic analysis, due to be finished by the end of 1972. Upon completion of the overall program, a decision concerning a commercial venture is expected. This program points up the increasing attention being focused on oil shale as a source of crude oil and energy for the U.S. at a time when the nation's supply of oil produced by conventional methods is far from adequate to meet the demand. The oil shale reserves of the Green River formation in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming are the largest hydrocarbon reservoir. The Piceance basin of Colorado, alone, contains some 80 billion bbl of shale oil recoverable by modern methods in reserves more than 30 ft thick and containing at least 30 gal of oil per ton. The U.S. Geological Survey has estimated that the total shale oil reserves of the Green River formation in the states of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming is more than 600 billion bbl of oil in deposits containing at least 25 gal per ton of shale oil.

The responsibility resting upon the owners and managers of mines where fire-damp is generated, renders it a matter of imperative duty that a frill and correct statement of any explosion that occurs should be given to the public. But such a statement must be based on the testimony of impartial eye-witnesses or trained experts. Then a sad experience may result in the adoption of effective preventive measures. In the absence of any official and professional body of mining experts in the State of Virginia, the writer desires to submit to his professional brethren of the American Institute of Mining Engineers an account of an explosion which recently took place in a colliery under his management, and earnestly desires a thorough and impartial discussion on the Fats submitted. Description and Plan of the Mine.—The "Grove" shaft is situated at the nearest point 825 feet from the last old workings upon the Midlothian property, south of the old Pump shaft works. (See Plate 111.) The shaft was sunk by the former company, some thirty years ago, to the depth of 622 feet. An incline over 230 feet long, starting in a northwest direction at a depth of 105 feet above the shaft bottom, had been driven to explore the coal on the dip. A return of very small dimensions had been driven round the shaft on the south side, entering the upcast chamber. With the information obtained from the former company that a seam of coal about four feet thick, at a depth of 490 feet, had been found, and with the information obtained by the present proprietor, R. T. Burrows, of Albion, N. Y., by means of two boreholes on the dip west of the old shaft, in both of which workable seams of coal at various depths had been ascertained, the clearing out and thorough retimbering of this shaft were commenced in March, 1873. Borehole No. 1, at a depth of 4773 feet from surface, revealed a seam of coal. This borehole was afterwards carried to a depth of 1140 feet to the granite, without finding any other seam of coal. Borehole No. 3, at a depth of 608 feet, revealed the first coal-seam, 14 1/2 feet thick; at 633 feet, the second, 12 feet thick; at 662 feet the third, 1 foot thick, and at 692 feet the fourth, 43 to 5 feet thick. The borehole was stopped at a depth of 715 1/2 feet.

Description and Plan of the Mine.-The "Grove" shaft is situated at the nearest point 825 feet from the last old workings upon the Midlothian property, south of the old Pump shaft works. (See Plate III.) The shaft was sunk by the former company, some thirty years ago, to the depth of 622 feet. An incline over 230 feet long, starting in a northwest direction at a depth of 105 feet above the shaft bottom, had been driven to explore the coal on the dip. A return of very small dimensions had been driven round the shaft on the south side, entering the upcast chamber. With the information obtained from the former company that a seam of coal about four feet thick, at a depth of 490 feet, had been found, and with the information obtained by the present proprietor, R. T. Burrows, of Albion, N. Y., by means of two boreholes on the dip west of the old shaft, in both of which workable seams of coal at various depths had been ascertained, the clearing out and thorough retimbering of this shaft were commenced in March, 1873. Borehole No. 1, at a depth of 477 1/2 feet from surface, revealed a seam of coal. This borehole was afterwards carried to a depth of 1140 feet to the granite, without finding any other seam of coal. Borehole No. 3, at a depth of 608 feet, revealed the first coal-seam, 142 feet thick; at 633 feet, the second, 12 feet thick; at 662 feet the third, 1 foot thick, and at 692 feet the fourth, 4 1/2 to 5 feet thick. The borehole was stopped at a depth of 715 1/2 feet.
