AMONG the half-dozen major research search projects now being conducted at the Michigan College of Minim, and Technology under the terms of an FERA grant, an important one relates to the use of suspensions in ore dressing. The study has resulted from the constantly widening industrial use of metals and minerals. The modest demands of a few decades ago for these minerals could be easily met from richer deposits. Now, at least in some localities, the richer deposits are nearing exhaustion. Furthermore, advances in the industrial arts and the competition of other minerals and metals have changed the specifications of materials needed by the manufacturers. Premiums and penalties enter into the sale value. Hence, to meet the requirements for amount and quality, washing and other ore-dress-

There are no formulas that guarantee success when obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often represent the most controversial issues faced by a community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and, probably most important, fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. The public hearing process is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately, not designed for resolution of disputes. It is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day there will be a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive, and unmanageable community conflicts.

MY endeavor in this paper will be to tell something of the accomplishments and current problems of the anthracite producer and to suggest some of the avenues for technical development that seem to me to be the most necessary and likely to bear fruitful results. The several subjects, that I find of most interest will be taken up individually with brief reference to the future trend. Underground Mining and Loading ?In this field great progress has been made in the last twenty years, beginning with the introduction of the scraper system. The electrical hoists for the operation of scrapers have been improved, and give little trouble, but there is an open field for the improvement of the auxiliary apparatus, particularly in the application of roller-hearing sheaves to the guiding of scraper ropes. Also notable in the last six or seven years is the introduction of shaker chutes, so that far more anthracite is now loaded over them than by scrapers. This trend should continue to be manifest, particularly if those who are looking ahead and who are charged with the development of this specialty continue constantly to study and improve the mechanical design of their shakers.

DURING 1937 the subject of mining geology was probably given more attention and more mining geologists were usefully employed than at any previous time. Of the many contributing factors the most important were: (1) a higher degree of prosperity in many countries, (2) a. better understanding of geologic phenomena, and (3) the apparently diminishing reserves of several important minerals. Mining companies have come to look upon geology with a growing appreciation of its aid in the more effective exploration and exploitation of mineral deposits. Most of the larger and more active companies have one or more geologists permanently attached to their staffs and some have well organized and efficiently managed geological departments. Even the smaller companies, who feel they cannot afford to employ a geologist on a permanent basis, are seeking the advice of competent men in this field with increasing frequency. One of the most significant trends has been the growing tendency to base exploratory work on more thorough geologic studies instead of empirical "hunches,"on which so much off the work in the past has relied. Likewise, mining companies are apparently more willing to expend larger sums on the basis of geologic possibilities in a district.

THE only oil produced in Alaska in 1923 was obtained from a dozen small wells, one of which was drilled during the year on the single patented tract of petroleum land in Alaska, in the Katalla field. These wells are owned by the Chilkat Oil Co., which finds a ready local market for its product in the form of gasoline produced in its own refinery. The search for oil has been continued, but except in the Cold Bay field there has been no drilling in new fields during the year. Drilling was in progress during 1923 at Pearl Dome, 18 miles from the coast. Here the Associated Oil Co. sank two wells, about 500 and 950 ft. deep, but suspended drilling in June. The Standard Oil Co., drilling on the same structure, reached a depth of 300 ft. by August and is reported to have reached about 700 ft. by November. The company began the, installation of a second drill in August. George C. Martin, who hastily examined the Chignik region, south of the Cold Bay field, reports that what is known of the geology near Chignik is not favorable to the presence of petroleum. Kirtley Mather, who made a geologic survey of the northern part of the Alaska Peninsula, reports that some of the structures and the formations are favorable to the presence of oil. A small seepage has long been known in the region near the mouth of Douglas River, which flows into Cook Inlet. Sidney Paige last summer made an examination .of the oil seepages which have long been known near Cape Simpson, 50 miles southeast of Point Barrow, the northernmost point of Alaska. He reports that there are two very large seepages emanating from small ridges about a mile apart and several miles from the coast. These are marked by flowing petroleum, and cover many acres. There is a very large accumulation of petroleum residue at these seepages. The surface exposures consist of clay shales with hard thin partings of calcareous shale which lie nearly horizontal, and are probably, of Jurassic age. Mr. Paige and his two sub-parties explored a large area inland from the Arctic coast between Cape Beaufort on the south and Point Barrow and Cape Simpson on the north. He himself ascended the Meade River for 150 miles. These surveys indicate a wide distribution of what is believed to be the formation from which the Cape Simpson seepages emerge, which is probably of Jurassic age. These rocks near the north Arctic coast are little disturbed, but are increasingly folded to the south, toward the mountains. No other seepages have been found, but what is known of the geology is not unfavorable to an oil field. This entire region lies in Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 4, and it was examined by the Geological Survey at the request and expense of the Department of the Navy.

U. S. mining trends for 1956 continued steadily U+ S. uphill, technique and equipment advanced with the pull, and exploration and development of once mined districts attracted more attention than new areas. Expansion of the Ambrosia Lake district in New Mexico more than doubled known uranium ore reserves, and production began from several of the large new ore discoveries. In Canada the up trend was more spectacular, especially in exploration and development. To combat increasing problems arising from high labor costs, taxes, low grade orebodies, and dwindling discoveries, manufacturers and mining companies have continued to introduce new techniques and new products-reamer bits for enlarging small holes drilled by jacklegs, whup d'whups for drift mucking, Cryderman machines and over-the-head small crawler-type machines for shaft mucking, the 20-ton TL 220 four-wheeled tractor trailer unit for underground haulage, inertia-type dust collectors, roof bolting in conjunction with chain link fencing for wall support, wooden roof bolting using compression support of ground for wall support, and new one-use carbide bits.

Distinct areas of mineralized and non-mineralized brecciated rock are found in the Ontario Unit of the United Park City Mines. These breccias contain an appreciable fraction of the present ore reserves and probably will become even more important as deeper levels are developed. Three ages of breccia have been recognized in the Ontario Mine to date: ( 1) Pre-mineral breccia that may or may not be mineralized, (2) early post-mineral breccia with mineralized fragments, and ( 3) late post-mineral breccia that is younger than and cuts through ( 1) and (2) above. These age ,relations are known from detailed underground mapping. Locally, both pre-mineral and post-mineral breccias have sufficient lead-zinc-silver content, either as matrix or fragmental material, to constitute ore. Ore-grade breccias occur throughout a vertical range of over 1000 feet and are found in both the Humbug and Deseret formations from above the Ontario 1300 level to below the Ontario 2200 level. The mineralized breccias, which are difficult to distinguish on mine maps, are not well delineated by underground workings, and their horizontal outline and vertical extent are not known beyond the immediate mining areas. The greatest amount of truly mineralized breccia is exposed on the 2200 level.

Impingers TWO types of midget impinger apparatus are used at Climax. The Mine Safety Appliances Company's midget impinger (MSA) and the Climax Molybdenum Company's midget impinger (CMC) (Fig. I). The Leiman Brother's No. 25, positive displacement pump is used in the CMC impinger instead of the four-cylinder radial pump that is used in the MSA impinger. With the MSA apparatus it is possible to obtain the proper vacuum by adjusting the needle valve on the vacuum chamber, while with the CMC impinger the proper vacuum is obtained by varying the rate at which the pump is cranked. The Leiman Brother's No. 25 pump is built to displace 0.1 cu. ft. of air per min. when operated at 145 r.p.m. In the CMC impinger this pump is so geared that the required crank speed is approximately 59 r.p.m. Both types of impinger apparatus are equipped with a water gauge mounted on top of the case and they are calibrated and operated in reference to the gauge. The MSA impinger flasks and nozzles are used with both types. Calibrating Impingers A calibrated precision Sargent wet-test meter (Fig. 2) is used in calibrating the impinger apparatus. The apparatus is set up as for taking a sample in the field, except that the hose from the outlet side of the meter is attached to the impinger nozzle. One revolution of the large hand of the meter indicates 0.1 cu. ft. of air displaced. The impinger pump is cranked for one minute, therefore, at a rate that will cause the large hand of the meter to make one revolution. The gauge reading is noted, then the impinger is cranked at this rate for 10 min. and is checked for error. If the meter indicates that more or less than I cu. ft. of air has been displaced, the impinger must be cranked—ither slower or faster according to the error—for another 10 min. and again checked for error. This operation is repeated until the proper gauge reading for a sampling rate of 0.1 cu. ft. per min. has been determined. This gauge reading is used in all sampling operations until the impinger is again calibrated. An impinger is calibrated at least twice each week. MlCROPROJECTOR A Bausch and Lomb model B micro-projector is used (Fig. 3). It consists of a substantial metal base supporting the light source and a microscope. Illumination is provided by a Bausch and Lomb 4.5-amp. arc lamp with mechanical feed. A glass water cell filled with a heat-absorbing and color-filter solution is placed between the arc lamp and the microscope. Two types of solution have been found satisfactory— a 2 per cent solution of copper sulphate or a 2 per cent solution of picric acid and distilled water. The practice of roof bolting in WORLD-WIDE mining activities is very well-known, having been used extensively for over 50 years. The theory of roof bolting, however, is extremely complicated, and only recently have investigators attempted to explain the theory. Various means of stress analysis have been utilized in rock mechanics, most of which reduce rock to an isotropic, homogeneous medium that can be easily analyzed. One of the indirect research methods is the photo-elastic technique, the theory of which is widely known and needs no elaboration. This technique has been used extensively to examine the state of stress around underground openings of various shapes in certain types of strata, and under various loading configurations.'-" In-Situ Mine Roof Trusses The photoelastic technique was employed here to evaluate the state of stress above a mine opening where support is provided by the in-situ mine roof truss. This support configuration, shown in Fig. 1, has gained popularity in recent years, particularly in mines with bad roof conditions." To the authors' knowledge, no scientific determination has been made of the advantages roof trusses may offer over conventional bolting configurations comparable to roof trusses. Ordinary mine roofs usually sag or bulge downward soon after mining. Normally, after some movement the roof begins to stabilize, but the face of this bulging mine rock is usually in tension and will almost always fail unless supported. Because rock fails easily in tension, it is desirable to "preload" the roof, that is, to impress a compressive force on the mine roof to prevent bulging and subsequent tensile failure. Ordinary rock bolting installations, particularly if the bolting is perpendicular to the mine roof plane, do not produce a preloading effect. Although bolting installations squeeze the strata together and produce a beam effect desirable for support, they do not have the advantage of actual uplift. They pull down at the anchorage point with a force equal to the bolt tension which sometimes causes a separation in the plane of the anchorage detrimental to roof strength. In-situ mine roof trusses require the installation of steel tension rods in the roof of the mine much the same as conventional roof bolts, except that the rods are arranged to produce a stress pattern above the upper surface of the opening similar to that of a prestressed beam. The roof rock acts to transmit the compression force. The simplest form of truss consists of two steel rods anchored to the back of holes drilled at an angle of approximately 45 over the mine pillars. These rods are collared near the middle of the room, and the lower ends of the rods are connected by tie rods and turn-buckles. Used in this manner, a small-diameter steel rod can provide essentially the same support as a wide-flange steel beam. By tightening the turnbuckles, an uplift on the roof can be produced. Objective of the Investigation The objective of this investigation was to determine qualitatively the state of stress that exists above a mine roof after the installation of the in-situ mine roof truss vs. that of two angle roof bolts, hereafter referred to as "roof bolts," drilled and placed in the same configuration, that is, 45" above each pillar and connected together in the middle of the room by a bearing member such as a steel beam. Each state of stress was to be identified, insofar as possible, as compression or tension above the mine opening. Model Construction A photoelastic model of a mine opening was coil-structed from -in. thick PLM-4B birefringent plastic and was machined to specification shown in Fig. 2. The dimensions of the opening were chosen to simulate a width-to-depth ratio of 3 to 1. Two % -in. holes were drilled at 45" angles, as shown, to provide for the loading devices. After construction, the model was annealed at 240°F to remove stresses produced during machining.

Possibly a word explaining the phenomenon more in detail may not be amiss. In the act of solidification each drop as it starts to solidify splits up into a half drop poorer in carbon and another half drop richer in carbon than the drop itself. The half drop poorer in carbon solidifies and attaches itself to-the already solid walls, whereas the half drop richer in carbon remains molten for the excellent reason that it is richer and hence is more fusible than the original drop, and hence in turn is wholly fusible at the existing temperature. Under usual conditions, as when the steel solidifies in a mold of any form, the successive molten half drops thus enriched in carbon remain present and by their enrichment progressively raise the carbon con-tent of the remaining molten mass, out of which successive half drops are continuously solidifying and attaching themselves to the already solid walls. THESE observations of the metal-working industries of Europe are based on a three months' tour of eight countries of Europe, in which 75 industrial establishments were visited in England, France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Austria and Switzerland during the summer of 1927. Since the Western Electric Co. is a large consumer of copper and brass, these industries were of particular interest and differences in practices were of keen interest to us.

HALLOWAY mine of Tennessee Copper Co. at Copperhill, Tenn., has been under development for several years. It has two shafts, the A shaft, 1336 ft deep from the surface to the 16 level, and the B shaft, lying 500 ft to the southeast and extending 1385 ft deep from the 10 level down to the 24 level. A section through the two shafts, Fig. 1, shows the development work entailed by the proposal and the area involved. The Problem: For operational reasons it was necessary to extend the B shaft from the 10 level to surface, and the pilot hole and raising method was chosen. This method had been used to extend the Company's Boyd manshaft from the 10 to the 14 level in 1954, but no satisfactory hole surveying method had been employed. In that instance, when the hole was located it was found to be about 8 ft from its calculated position. The success of this shaft extension method lies in the ability to keep the pilot hole within the proposed shaft diameter for nearly the entire length. The approximate 670 ft of extension distance in one hole was thought to be excessive because of deflection encountered locally in other core drilling. Since a connection between the two shafts, intermediate between the surface and the 10 level, would be required at some future date, the pilot hole drilling was done in two sections. This intermediate level was fixed at the 6 level and distances became 470 ft from surface to the 6 level and 230 ft from the 6 to the 10 level. A rock pentice of 25 ft was left temporarily in place just above the 10 level.

The purpose of the mill tests reported herein, was to determine the relative power efficiency of fast and slow rod mill speeds on the ores of the Tennessee Copper Co. The tests were carried out at the lsabella Mill of the Tennessee Copper Co. under normal operating conditions. Every effort was made to keep the ore supply and other conditions constant, but it will be noted that some slight variation did occur. The open circuit 6 by 9 rod mill, and ore, used in these tests have been previously described.' Four motor drive pinions were available and the tests were performed in the following manner: each pinion was used to drive the mill for a period of one week. Constant sampling prevailed during the test run, and a composite sample for each speed test was made. Realizing that some slight liner wear took place during the four-week test-run, and that some slight variation of the ore may have taken place, a second and then a third series of four-week test- runs were made with the four different pinions. The screen analysis of each of the thee-week run samples at the various speeds were composited and the results are shown in Table 1. The authors feel that the 12 weeks of operation consumed during these test-runs would represent fairly the effect of each mill speed. The data of line 37 show that within the error of sampling and plant operation, the tons of minus 65-mesh material generated per horsepower hour was the same at all four speeds.

We would like to thank Mr. Mandolesi for his informative paper on rails from strand cast steel. The chemical and structural properties of the strand cast steel were of particular interest to us. We would like to supplement his excellent report with some of Inland's findings from our Caster with submerged nozzles and strands reduced in line from 7" x 7" to 5-5/8" square cross section. Inland has conducted extensive segregation studies on AISI 1049 steel - Fine Grain 0.50% carbon and 0.75% manganese. Based on approximately 80 heats, our normal segregation pattern results in analyses of .49% carbon in the center, and 0.50% carbon at the midway and edge position. The sulfur analysis averages .025% in the center, .027% midway, and .026% at the edge. Note the slight negative segregation between the center and midway position. This steel, being lower carbon and probably cast nearer the liquidus, resulted in less segregation than the 0.80% carbon rail steel.

The application of the law of supply and demand to the sale of crude oil is generally conceded, but the motives underlying the buyer's (refiner's) demands are not always obvious to the seller (producer). In some cases this obscurity has led to the conclusion that the refiner may be unnecessarily particular when he selects one crude and rejects another. This preference, however, is very largely the reflection of the refiner's product demands and the quality of the stocks obtainable from the selected crude. The purpose of this paper is to point out critical characteristics of the major classes of refined products and to show how crudes vary in their suitability for such products. With relatively few exceptions, available processing methods and addition agents make it theoretically possible to produce any type of refined product from any crude source, although it may not be economi-cally sound to do so. The widespread application of thermal cracking for converting higher boiling stocks into gasoline is well known. More recently cracking and refining in the presence of catalysts9 have been developed, as well as various processes for polymerizing lighter hydro-carbons into gasolines having desirable characteristics.6 For several years, selective solvents have been applied commercially to refining inferior quality kerosene, Diesel fuel and lubricating oil distillates .3 Improved methods for refining lubricating oils from crude residua,4 formerly suitable only for fuel, are now in use and a number of special solvent processes are available for dewaxing lubricating oils to low pour point.5 These improved refining methods have been developed not only to meet the demand for improved product quality but also to enable the refiner to obtain quality products from crude sources that would not yield such products by the older refining methods. In many cases, the utilization of these modern refining tools necessi-tates an appreciable expenditure for equipment as well as added manufac-turing costs, and their application therefore must be justified economically. Despite the availability of such tools, the added processing costs involved and yields obtainable may render their application entirely impractical. A serious problem confronted the city of Gunnison early in 1958 in that, for a few months during each spring runoff, the water supply derived from the Gunnison River became polluted to an unsafe point. The city management had the choice of building a new filter plant to replace the old unworkable one or drilling wells to develop a ground water supply. The cost of a new filter plant was estimated at $180,000 compared to $50,000 for 6 wells, pumps, and additional water lines, hence their decision to attempt the development of sufficient ground water. Six wells at 300 gpm per well were estimated as necessary to handle the peak usage of 1800 gpm, compared to only 600 gpm winter usage. Although the water table is only about 7 feet below the surface, existing private wells drilled at random locations were producing much less than 300 gpm. The problem was to find sufficient quantities from about 6 wells. Since the presence of an ancient bedrock channel was suspected, which would be expected to localize greater quantities of water, the city of Gunnison authorized a resistivity survey to investigate bedrock topography below unconsolidated gravels. Survey results were highly satisfactory and led to the preparation of a fairly detailed bedrock contour map, Fig. 1. This map was used in selection of all well sites. The city of Gunnison is situated in a flat, broad, Quaternary gravel-filled valley (terrain dips south at 20 feet per mile) at the junction of the Gunnison River and Tomichi Creek. The valley, about 2-4 miles wide, is bordered by hills of Tertiary volcanics to the northwest, Cretaceous and Jurassic sediments to the north and northeast, and pre-Cambrian granite and gneiss to the south. One previous deep test well at the west end of the city hit pre-Cambrian granite at 496 feet, which, allowing for 40 feet of surface gravels, makes the older sedimentary section 456 feet thick. This section is probably all Jurassic Morrison formation, consisting of the Saltwash sandstone overlain by the much thicker section of Brushy Basin shales and mudstones. According to the driller's logs, each well was bottomed in what is believed to be Brushy Basin shale. FIELD PROCEDURE A standard Gish-Rooney type of resistivity apparatus was employed, which used 45-volt dry batteries as a direct-current power source. Applied voltages could be selected from 45 volts to a 270-volt maximum. Copper-coated steel stakes were employed as current electrodes and porous porcelain pots as potential electrodes to avoid possible polarization effects with direct current. The expanding Wenner electrode configuration was utilized for this investigation and measurements were made at 20 40, 60, 80, and 100-foot spacings,

A mathematical model has been used to investigate crossflow effects in a stratified reservoir during an idealized displacement process. A process in which one incompressible fluid displaces completely another incompressible fluid of the same density and viscosity was considered. The reservoir was assumed to be composed of homogeneous layers which are discrete but interconnected. Approximate five-spot flow geometry was simulated by arranging two pie-shaped cylindrical (two-dimensional) wedges in series. Some of the common production methods rely, for their effectiveness, on the fact that the formation consists of isolated strata. This is particularly true of selective plugging and single-zone production-injection methods. The effectiveness of these techniques for several cases in which adjacent strata are in communication has been evaluated. The usual production-injection schemes for fluid injection processes involve using the same completion interval in both the production and the injection wells. The efficiency of this, as well as alternative productioz-injection procedures has been examined for some cases involving communicating strata. INTRODUCTION The performance of many fluid injection projects is marred by early breakthrough and by production of a high percentage of the displacing phase after breakthrough. This channeling effect, if it occurs in reservoirs which have large permeability variations, is often explained on the basis of a model composed of discrete, isolated strata. Corrective or preventive measures based on this same model are also common. The behavior of stratified models has been the subject of considerable study. An excellent review of the early literature was given by Seba.1 Studies of the depletion performance have since been made for continuous, unrestricted communication between strata2-4 and for production from one permeable bed in continuous but restricted communication with an adjacent permeable bed.5,6 Model studies of displacement processes in stratified systems with crossflow also have been reprted.7-12 Finally, methods which account for crossflow have been developed for computing displacement behavior in stratified systems.13,14 Most methods for controlling or preventing channeling involve some change in the interval open to production and/or injection. Although many variations of the selective completion problem have been studied in regard to the depletion of a reservoir, little attention has been given to the behavior of a displacement process under similar conditions. Sebal used a resistance network model to study the performance of a process in which one incompressible fluid displaces an identical fluid from a linear, stratified reservoir. He investigated the possibility of improving the vertical coverage by limiting the completion interval of the production well. This investigation deals with techniques in which selective completion of the production and/or the injection wells is used in an attempt to control channeling. At one extreme, selective plugging and single-zone isolation (assuming perfect execution) should be successful if the reservoir is actually made up of independent strata. At the other extreme, they can hardly be expected to be successful if the channeling is caused by a mechanism in which stratification effects are negligible even though there are extreme variations in the formation permeability and/or the injectivity profile of the wells is not uniform. By contrast, it is difficult to anticipate the effect that the amount of communication between the beds of a stratified system will have on the efficiency of selective completion techniques. The objective of this study is the quantitative determination of the effect of communication on the behavior of some particular stratified systems which will at least lead to qualitative conclusions.

THE Institute met on Wednesday evening, May 22d, in the parlor of the Stanton House, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, President, in the chair. The President delivered an introductory address on the Brown Hematite Deposits of the Great Valley, after which the following papers were read and discussed : Note on the Result of an Experiment with the Wheeler Process of Combining Iron and Steel in the Head of a Rail, by W. E. C. Coxe, of Reading, Pa. On the Jenks Corundum Mine, Macon County, N. C., by Dr. R. W. Raymond, of New York City. On Wednesday afternoon, previous to the opening session, the members who had already arrived in Chattanooga, were taken by the Local Committee to the works of the Roane Iron Company, and Chattanooga Iron Company, and then to the top of Lookout Mountain, where, at the request of the members present, Dr. Hunt described the geological and geographical features of the Chattanooga region, with the magnificent panorama spread out before them as a map. On Thursday morning an excursion was made by steamboat down the Tennessee River as far as Shellmound. Here cars were taken to the coal mines of the Dade Coal Company, where the members were courteously received by Mr. E. B. Wells, the Superintendent. After a trip through the mines the party partook of a collation provided by the company. South Pittsburgh, on the Tennessee River, was next visited, where the Southern States Coal, Iron and Land Company have a large blast-furnace plant in the course of erection. After conducting the party through the works, shops, etc., Mr. James Bowron, the manager, entertained the members with graceful hospitality at dinner. The second session was held on Thursday evening for the transaction of business. The President, Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, appointed Messrs. W. E. C. Coxe, R. H. Richards, and F. J. Slade, scrutineers, to examine the ballots for officers for the ensuing year.
