In the Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefor?, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 Ib. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of ovcr 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 Ib. per sq. ft. of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to he given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam arc appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent. At the above-mentioned mines, electric motors have replaced the many small steam engines, so that this supply of exhaust steam has been practically eliminated. The larger engines are compound, triple, or quadruple condensing. The hoists, however, in all cases are simple and non-condensing and of two sizes, namely, 24 by 60 in. and 32 by 72 in. (61 by 152 cm. and 81 by 183 cm.). Friends often ask how accurate the work of our little stamp mill is, or express the opinion that a little mill cannot do good work. As a reply we would like to place on record the results of a few tests. There are two periods of work in our laboratory; the fall term, when the class collectively goes through all our chief laboratory-processes, and the spring term, when the students work up their theses, each electing some one process or investigation and devoting himself wholly, or almost wholly, to that. Some of the tests, the results of which are recorded in this paper, were made in the fall term; the preparation of the apparatus, the sampling and the assaying being done largely by assistants, with the aid of the students. An investigation of the creep deformation of coarse-grained high-purity aluminum at temperatures approaching the melting point permitted the formulation of a theory of subgrain formation. Subgrain boundaries were found to be formed by two different processes: kinking and polygonization. Polygonization is considered as the main factor in subgrain formation. SINCE "slipless flow" was first discussed in detail by Hanson and Wheeler,' many studies have been undertaken to determine how metals deform at high temperatures. Several types of observations have been reported. Jenkins and Mellor,² working on the creep of mild steels and various grades of commercial irons, found metallographic evidence of a kind of substructure within the grains after deformation at high temperatures. Homes" observed after creep deformation of steel at high temperatures that the original X-ray spots were sharply divided into several small ones. The same phenomenon was reported by Hirst4 from his studies on lead and later by Crussard5 from his work on aluminum. The works of these investigators demonstrated beyond any doubt that the splitting of the X-ray spots was due to the fact that the grains underwent a division into subgrains during deformation at high temperatures. Since then, numerous experiments have been undertaken on aluminum in order to determine the mechanism of formation of subgrains. Research workers can be divided, for the purpose of discussion, into two different groups as regards thinking on subgrain formation. On one hand, based on the work on polygonization by Cahn,6 Guinier and Lacombe,7 Greenough and Smith," Crussard,10,11 and Servi, Norton, and Grant," it was concluded that subgrain formation was a consequence of the simultaneous effects, first, of inhomogeneous deformation which produced bending of the lattice, and second, polygonization. On the other hand, Wood and coworkers13-16 based their work on the results of an earlier report" which dealt with crystallite size and a fragmentation theory. It is interesting to note that while Greenough and Smith8 and Wood et al. performed similar experiments, their conclusions were quite different. Wood et al. did not recognize polygonization as a fundamental mechanism and said that aluminum, at the beginning of the deformation, fragmented immedi- ately into subgrains in order to permit deformation of the metal, the number of these subgrains being a function of strain rate and temperature. They concluded that deformation of grains occurred by flow along the subgrain boundaries. In view of the contradictory conclusions, it would appear that the data were not explicit enough to provide an unambiguous conclusion. It appears that the techniques by which most of the results were obtained, namely, X-ray work, were not enough by themselves to solve the problem. Another approach was needed. In the present research, therefore, an extensive metallographic study was planned to supplement the X-ray work. The importance of revealing the subgrain boundaries metallographically was realized, and this will explain the extensive development and use of etching techniques. In order that subgrains would be considerably larger and therefore more readily visible under a microscope, the creep experiments were performed at very high temperatures approaching the melting point of aluminum. Development of Experimental Technique Creep tests were run at constant load on high purity (99.995 pct) aluminum specimens having a very coarse grain size. None of the specimens was run to fracture. Under sponsorship of NIOSH, Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard School of Public Health acting as a subcontractor, has determined for the first time the effective protection provided to working underground coal miners wearing approved half-mask dust respirators. This was done by conducting 187 man-shifts of in-mine testing in four different coal mines; included in this testing were 37 different test subjects representing 11 different job classifications and 5 different models of respirators. Presently available respirators on average provided significant protection levels to working miners even though on an intermittent use basis. However, "average" protection values were well below those achieved under laboratory conditions. Protection levels varied from man to man in a given work crew and from day to day for a given man. In addition, some of the factors affecting use and effectiveness of presently used respirators are discussed, as are areas in which improvements are needed, and the need to consider these improvements in context of a systems approach.

The good work of the surveys supported by the different branches of the government needs little mention to geologists but is underappreciated by people at large. Geologists and engineers realize their usefulness and yet even from this group one hears occasionally an undercurrent of discontent about their work or the distribution of it. The very fact that discontent arises within and without this group and has drawn attention of legislative bodies of the country in the present time of stress means that a large number of people do not receive or do not realize that they receive benefit from these public works. This seems to be a clear indication that more than the relations between government surveys and the mining industry is involved and that if the mining industry is interested in continuation of the work of these surveys on the past scale they must consider the other survey divisions and their activity. Also, relations between government surveys and certain specialized types of mining have not been as close as they should be. I have been employed in almost the entire range of fields offered to geologists and have studied closely the feeling of people towards geological service. Recently it has been a pleasure to be closely associated with men who were as deeply interested in civic welfare and affairs of state as in the financial success of a large industry developing natural resources. Previously I had seen service in a national survey, a state survey, summer employment by a large mining company exploring new property and detailed geological work for a large corporation. Major responsibility as a college instructor has left me free to view each of these assignments in unprejudiced fashion and at the same time study the relation of government surveys to large natural resource industries, average industrial and construction work and service to nongeologists and laymen. Considerations Governing Geologic Public Service Three groups of people must be satisfied by the surveys if dissatisfaction is to be dispelled. This paper constitutes a preliminary report on experimental work done to date on the anode-furnace treatment of blister copper containing relatively high percentages of nickel. The investigation has not been completed but results obtained to date are considered of sufficient interest to warrant publication. Blister copper treated by the Ontario Refining Co. originates from the Copper Cliff smelter of The International Nickel Company of Canada, of which the former is a wholly-owned subsidiary. The blister as received contains from 0.50 to 1.50 per cent Ni, and in this respect differs from that treated by other refineries on this continent. During the anode-furnace treatment, only a portion of the nickel content is removed, and of the amount remaining in the anodes a varying percentage is found in the anode slimes. This necessitates a more extensive treatment than ordinary nickel-free material. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat roasting and leaching operations several times before the nickel content is low enough to permit the slimes to proceed to the dore furnace. This, besides increasing treatment charges, causes greater selenium stack losses and involves a longer tie-up of precious-metal values. Therefore this investigation was undertaken with the aim of determining the factors influencing the diversion of nickel into the anode sludge. From experience it was known that by keeping the nickel content of anodes at 0.55 to 0.60 per cent maximum a relatively satisfactory slime resulted. One avenue of attack therefork was developing improved elimination in the anode-furnace treatment so that the anode content mentioned above was not exceeded. Another angle was to improve the solubility, during electrolysis, of the nickel constituent in the anodes, thus decreasing the percentage diverted to slimes. It may be mentioned here that nickel dissolving electrochemically and entering the electolyte presents no difficulty from a treatment standpoint. Both of these approaches were studied and are discussed separately below.

EVERYONE is familiar with the story of the poor Indian and his leaking tepee. He couldn't repair the leak while it was raining, naturally. And when it wasn't raining, where was the incentive? Even if this traditional Indian was apochryphal, his counterparts are certainly alive today, and operating on a world-wide scale. - A recent issue of the Wall Street Journal, for example, carried an impassioned letter from an old cocoa planter, who wants the world to know why the price of cocoa has gone skyrocketing. For years, he says, British and American interests have bought cocoa at the cheapest possible price and, incidentally, from growers willing to sell at that price. Between them, they didn't put enough money back into the business, either to fight disease in the cocoa groves or to plant new cocoa trees. Until new trees are planted and come into bearing, we will be paying exorbitant prices for our cocoa, and getting less of it.

THE copper smelter and refinery of The Messina (Transvaal) Development Co. Ltd., at Messina, South Africa, was erected in 1920 and 1921, but initial operations were deferred until late in 1922 on account of the collapse of the copper market in the interim. Because the anticipated production was to be only 20 tons of copper per day from a high-grade matte containing 60 per cent copper, and because the ore did not contain gold or silver in quantities sufficient to pay for separation from the copper bullion, it was decided to design the plant along lines quite different from the modern smelteries treating large quantities of sulfide ores carrying appreciable amounts of gold and silver. The plant was built, therefore, for the production of copper by the Nicholls-James process. By this method two-thirds of the copper matte produced was roasted in a Merton calciner and charged into a bath of the remaining one-third portion of unroasted matte in a reaction furnace. The original design was not only novel in providing for the Nicholls-James process, but also in comparison with new plants built elsewhere, because of factors inherent in the locality. Sources of supply for machinery were very remote; it takes three months after the placing of an order to accomplish delivery of machinery into Messina from the United States. Native labor was available at 30 to 40¢ per 8-hr. shift. These factors permitted plant design which provided no overhead cranes, no matte ladles, no slag pots or other usual mechanical means of transportation between departments. The design resulted in a compact simple plant with furnaces arranged close together and. terraced so as to provide for gravity transfer of molten material from one furnace to another and for manual disposal of products. Fig. 1 shows the relative location of furnaces. The three furnaces are parallel on successively decreasing elevations. A superimposed feed floor was provided above the furnaces. All three furnaces were provided with coal-dust burners served from a Bonnot system of coal-dust transportation, and the waste gases were discharged into waste-heat boilers.

THERMODYNAMIC properties of many high-temperature systems containing sulfur, such as slags, metal sulfides, and solutions of sulfur in liquid metals, have been studied by means of equilibration with known gas mixtures.'" This method presupposes a complete and accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic data for all possible components of the gas phase at high temperatures. However, a survey of the data available up to 1952 on the thermodynamics of gaseous sulfur species and compounds, by Richardson and Jeffes,' showed that there was considerable uncertainty in the values of the free energies of formation of S, SO, HS, and CS. In many cases, this uncertainty made it impossible to decide whether or not these species would form a significant proportion of the sulfur present in the gas phase in any given system. After the review by Richardson and Jeffes had been published, St. Pierre and Chipman6 measured, by an indirect method, the free energy of formation of SO. This also enabled a clear choice to be made among the three possible spectroscopic values for the dissociation energy of S2 into atoms10 thereby determining the free energy of formation of S from S2, and fixing the free energy of formation of HS more accurately" The main purpose of the present investigation was to measure the free energy of formation of CS, which was still in considerable doubt. For example, at 1600°C, it could be estimated to be +6 +25 kcal per mole,* most of the uncertainty being in the * Based on the dissociation energles of CS6 and S2,5 the heat of sublimation of graphite, and, the assumption that the entropy of formation of CS is the same as that of CO. value of the dissociation energy." A secondary purpose of the investigation was to determine more accurately the equilibrium sulfur pressures over dilute solutions of sulfur in carbon-saturated liquid iron. General Method Dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid iron, saturated with carbon, were brought to equilibrium at 1600" and 1800°C, with known gas mixtures consisting, initially, of A and CS2. After equilibrium had been reached, the melts were quenched and analyzed for sulfur. In the high temperature region of the furnace, an equilibrium was set up between the various possible sulfur species and compounds in the gas phase; namely, CS2, CS, S2, and S. The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Derr and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

Sand production for use in hydraulic concrete is probably the most important element affecting the physical characteristics of the resulting concrete in the opinion of most engineers, aggregate producers and contractors of today, who are engaged in the effort to produce stronger concrete per unit of cement used. Their opinion is based on both laboratory and field results. In the past, proper cement production has been the object of most of the study given this subject and while it is still studied by the extensive and well equipped laboratories that are a part of every cement mill, as well as by all governmental laboratories, at the present time the object of most of these studies has been in the field of low heat and quick setting qualities rather than the effect on the strength of the concrete. It is recognized that concrete must have two important qualities; namely, workability with the least water possible, and uniformity. These qualities have been accepted as axiomatic and possible to obtain if the foreman in charge knew his business. Now, however, with concrete produced by plants that mechanically weigh and chart all the ingredients, including water, of a batch of concrete, the foreman cannot cut and fit his aggregates, cement and water to fit his own desires and the secret of the important qualities of workability and uniformity are found to lie largely in the sand, hence the attention given its production at the present time. With this condition in mind the engineers of the United States Bureau of Reclamation and the Six Companies Incorporated in designing the plant for producing the aggregates for the Boulder Canyon Project included every possible means for the production of a sand of a constant and acceptable fineness modulus as well as a constant moisture content, and for attaining these results with as few detrimental ingredients, like silt and vegetable matter, as possible. This aggregate plant (Figs. 1 and 2) is in Hemenway Wash, 7 miles north of Boulder City. It is 4 miles upstream from the low-level mixing plant. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Don and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

OVERVIEW This paper is a review of two fine particle processing unit operations - classification and mixing. It may appear that these two processes have nothing in common. In fact, the simplified symbols used to represent them on flowsheets - a tipped equilateral triangle such that the base lies along the vertical - are totally reversed. For classification, a splitting action, the apex of the tipped triangle is to the left of the vertical base. A horizontal flow arrow indicating input is drawn to the apex while two horizontal flow arrows indicating outputs are drawn from the top and bottom of the vertical base, respectively. On the other hand, for mixing, a blending action, the apex of the tipped triangle is to the right of the vertical base. Two horizontal flow arrows indicating inputs are drawn to the top and bottom of the vertical base, respectively, while a single horizontal flow arrow indicating output is drawn from the apex. Classification is the process whereby a collection of particles is separated into two or more portions differing in some physical or chemical property. Mixing is the process whereby two or more portions of particles differing in some physical or chemical property are combined into a collection of particles. The common bond that links them together in the same review is the fact that they both require dispersion of the particles in order to achieve successfully their individual objectives.
