Six examples of the peritectoid transformation were selected from the literature and studied by the method of isothermal transformation. The kinetics and mechanisms of five of the examples are presented as TTT diagrams and photomicrographs. The exist-enc- of a peritectoid in the sixth case is doubtful. ALTHOUGH the peritectoid transformation per se has been known for many years, no precise published data exist concerning the kinetics or mechanisms involved in transformations of this type, except for the brief treatment by Rhines, et al. 1,10 Bearing in mind the fact that investigations of recent years are uncovering more and more peritectoids and suspected peritectoids, a thorough study of the well-established peritectoids appeared to be in order. It was for this reason that a study of the kinetics and morphological mechanisms of six binary peritectoids was undertaken. The six peritectoids selected from the literature for study were those reported at 7.02 wt pct Al-Ag, 26.0 wt pct Sb-Cu, 30.5 wt pct Sb-Cu, 32.3 wt pct Sn-Cu, 8.35 wt pct Si-Cu, and 21.2 wt pct Al-Cu. These selections were based on availability and purity of components, ease of preparation and heat-treatment, and estimated reliability of the available equilibrium diagrams in the regions of interest. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were induction melted in electrode-grade graphite and chill-cast in cast-iron split molds. In all cases, the alloys were so brittle that they could easily be broken into samples weighing 1 or 2 g. Chemical analyses showed that the alloys used were close to the respective peritectoid compositions reported in the literature and that the impurity levels were low in all cases. Metallographic examination showed uniform distributions of phases in all samples, indicating uniformity of composition in the samples studied. Isothermal transformation studies were carried out in fused-salt media, using the familiar inter-rupted-quench method. Uniformity of temperature in the salt baths was maintained by continuous stirring with a stainless-steel agitator. On the basis of actual observations of the temperature fluctuations, the estimated temperature control was + 10C for the Ag-Al and Cu-Sb alloys and ±30C for the Cu-Sn, Cu-Si, and Cu-Al alloys. The accuracy of all temperature measurements was estimated to be ±1°C. It was found necessary to mount metallographic specimens of the Ag-Al alloy in cold-curing methyl methacrylate, since the temperatures encountered in mounting in bakelite or lucite caused an appreciable degree of transformation to the ß phase. For the other alloys, wood-flour-filled bakelite mounts were used to avoid extraneous X-ray diffraction lines during the later examination of the metallographic specimens on a Norelco Geiger-counter d if f r ac tomete r. In the X-ray diffraction procedure, agreement between the published diffraction patterns and those obtained in this study was good. This was particularly important for phase identification, since the literature contained little in the way of micrograph description in some cases. Etching of the silver-aluminum alloy for metallographic examination was done by swabbing with either of the following reagents: 1) 10 g CrO3, 1 g (NH4), SO2, 0.5 g NH4NO3, 100 ml H2O, or 2) 10 ml NH4OH, 1 ml 20 pct KOH, 4 ml 3 pct H2O2, 5 ml H2O. The other alloys were etched with the usual bichromate etchant: 2 g K2Cr2O7, 1.5 g NaC1, 8 ml conc. H2SO4, 100 ml H20 (swabbed vigorously). EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS A) The Ag-Al peritectoid at 7.02 wt pct Al— The phase equilibrium involved in this peritectoid is shown in Fig. I.2 The phase boundaries in the vicinity of the peritectoid were most comprehensively established by Hume-Rothery, et al,3 who placed the equilibrium temperature at 448 °C and the equilibrium compositions of the a ß' and y phases at 6.11, 7.02, and 7.24 wt pct Al, respective The alloy used in this study analyzed4 6.95 wt pct A making it slightly hypoperitectoid according to the accepted equilibrium diagram. RECENT studies by Smith and Olney,1,2 Olney,3 Greifer and Salli,4 Rys etal., and Olney and smith 6 have established that graphite is the first decomposition product to format the surface of hypereutectoid plain-carbon steels when they are austenitized in a vacuum or inert atmosphere and slowly cooled. This graphite evidently forms directly from the austenite and only at the surface of the specimen. The interior of the specimen is found to be free of graphite. The graphite layer can almost completely cover the specimen surface and the rate of its formation is markedly sensitive to the orientation of the austenite. The present work was undertaken to study this phenomenon further, especially with regard to the effect of temperature and austenite orientation. The material studied in this work was a high-purity iron-carbon alloy containing 0.88 pct C, 0.005 pct Mn, 0.016 pct Si, 0.005 pct S, and 0.002 pct P. Specimens were heat-treated in a commercial hot stage modified for rapid quenching.7 This permitted direct observation of the formation of the surface graphite. A vacuum of 10"" to 10-5 mm of Hg prevented oxidation or decarburization of the specimens. Specimens were austenitized for 30 min at 1100°C and quenched to a series of lower temperatures where they were isothermally transformed. Surface graphite was observed to form at 700°, 750°, and 780°C but not at 825°, 900° or 1000°C. It is, perhaps, more important to put on record the particulars of experiments that are derided failures than those that are successful, as those of the latter class are certain to live, while the former may be lost sight of in a short time, and repeated by others. TO this end, I propose to give the particulars of a straight or no-bosh furnace just tried at the Chester (New Jersey) works, which was such a decided failure as to leave no doubt of the plan being wrong, and determining the necessity of a bosh of some kind, as of old. Some experiences during the past year led me to suppose that the bosh or belly of a furnace was unnecessary, and that the contraction of the walls toward the bottom for the stock to wedge in, in its descent, facilitated dirty walls and scaffolding; hence, irregularity and high fuel. I concluded, however, that a very shallow bosh for a skew-back support to the stock would be necessary, and that the proper place for this was in the tuyere-section, beginning just below the tuyeres and ending just above them, where there is nothing in the solid state but fuel, which is consuming, and no slipping or travel of stock takes place. The cubical capacity of a furnace of this design would necessarily be much less than in the old style, unless it was made very much higher. But I assumed that the loss of room for reduction could be overcome by making the size of the ore and stone charged much smaller, so that the gases would act more quickly. The next point was, what should be the size of the shaft, crucible, tuyere-circle, and tunnel-head for a given quantity of air? My first design was 12 feet diameter of shaft for 7000 feet of air, with a 9-foot crucible and 8-foot toyere-circle. This I soon reduced to 8-foot shaft diameter, which I concluded was large enongh for economical work, if regular travel of the stock on the walls could be maintained. I consulted with a number of experienced furnacemen and furnace-engineers, and the plan was well thought of by many of them; and, as I had also some offers of financial aid from them toward the risk of trying the experiment, my firm concluded

OF all the machinery used in mining work, mine cars are probably the most abused. They are hauled through water and muck, up hill and down grade, whipped around curves, bumped and jerked, and exposed to the ravages of the weather. However, as a general rule their lubrication is not altogether neglected. The mine operator may not heed the extra drag that a frozen conveyor bearing gives, but he is all too aware of the increased load that faulty mine car wheels put on his power plant. When the circuit breakers begin to fly, and when his mine loco- motives come out with only half the cars that they were able to carry a month before, then neglected mine car wheel lubrication becomes apparent, and woe to the person responsible.

As director of the Division of Metallurgy of the Technical Section of the Air Service, American Expeditionary Forces, from August, 1917, to January, 1919, I devoted much time to the study of the steels best suited to the construction of aircraft. It became apparent at a very early stage of my investigation that the practice of builders varied greatly in regard to the number of different steels to be used, to the kinds of steels, and to their treatment. Some manufacturers employed as many as fifteen steels while the builder of one of the newest motors, favorably passed upon in the United States, assured me that two or, at the most, three kinds of steel were all he needed to produce satisfactory results. In the matter of treatment, the manufacturers were also greatly at variance. Some treated their steel with considerable refinement while others paid but scant attention to this feature. Some manufacturers case-hardened many parts, while others used the case-hardening process sparingly, if at all. Nickel-chromium steels were used at some works for case-hardening while at other plants this treatment was applied exclusively to carbon steels. Air-hardening nickel-chromium steel was used extensively by some and not at all by others. Considerable variance existed likewise in regard to the steels used for admission and exhaust valves. The conclusion was obvious, that no two manufacturers of airplane motors held like opinions as to the steels to be used or as to the treatment they should receive. Was it to be inferred from this that the many committees and associations that had been created, in part at least, for the standardization of aircraft steels had failed to make proper recommendations or that the manufacturers had ignored their recommendations ? Confining our inquiry to the committees and associations that had dealt with this question in England, France, and the United States, it was found that in Great Britain the British Engineering Standards Committee, now the British Engineering Standards Association, had devoted much time to the problem of satisfactory standards for aircraft steels. In April, 1918, this Association presented a set of specifications described as "British Standard Specifications for Aircraft Steels for Government Purchases in the United States of America." WHEN a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibili-ties of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or 1/4-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1.) The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands.

AT the meeting of the Iron and Steel Division at Cleveland, Sept. 10-12, the morning of Thursday, Sept. 12, has been set aside for an excursion to visit the ore docks, blast furnaces, and steel plants. A special train, made available through the courtesy of Appleton Cleveland, general superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad, will leave the siding near the Auditorium at 8.35 a. m. The trip will be free, but tickets must be' obtained in advance at the booths for registration for excursions at the Auditorium. An hour will be spent at the docks, an hour at the Central blast furnaces, and two hours at the Cuyahoga works of the American Steel and Wire Co. A buffet luncheon will be served, with the compliments of the Pennsylvania Railroad Co., on board the train en route. At the Tuesday morning session, Sept. 10, a motion picture showing the operations in making wrought iron by the Aston process will be shown for the first time.

Current scale-up procedures are discussed critically, including: constant specific energy criterion; determination of mill size and power for a given ore, throughput and mesh of grind; specification of operating speed and loading. A major dynamic and kinetic factor now recognized is that the ratio of media rotational flow to ore axial flow, and the number of mill revolutions that ore is subjected to during residence, both diminish as mill diameter increases. These factors can lead to capacity limitations when mill diameters reach a critical range, especially regarding coarse sizes. Experience at the Bougainville and Pinto Valley operations is contrasted. Corrective measures suggested are to reduce loading and increase speed towards the Davis best operating speed.

INTRODUCTION The Ramsbeck Pb/Zn Mine is located in the northern Sauerland area of West Germany, 150 km N of Frankfurt and 120 km E of Cologne. This is a vein deposit which has been worked from the middle of the 19th century to 1974. About 15 million tons of ore were mined and milled. The ore district contains several vein deposits and is roughly 14 km in length and 4 to 5 km in width. The host rocks are strata of Lower Middle Devonian age. The strata strike 60° to 70° NE and where overturned have a dip steeper than the veins (Fig. 1). The galena-sphalerite mineralization is in quartz veins, which are mineralized where they cut the "Main Ramsbeck Quartzite" horizon, a very competent host rock. Vein structures strike at 65º to 75º, dip about 20° to 25º SE and cut the quartzite at approximately 60 m intervals. The main or "steep veins" within each vein structure dip at 10º to 80° SE with an average of 30° and are offset by thrust faults dipping 5º N to 40° S with an average of 5º S. "Flat veins" usually weakly mineralized occur in the thrust faults between the "steep veins", thus forming the overall step-like vein structure. The mineralization is very irregular and changes a- long strike and down dip. It consists of thin veins of pure sphalerite and galena with quartz and pyrite. In order properly to evaluate the data related to geomagnetic surveys, it is highly desirable to have all the available information concerning the magnetic properties of the involved media. This is true of surface as well as subsurface formations and becomes of increasing importance as advancement in instrumental and interpretative technique permits the analysis of relatively slight magnetic reflections of buried masses. Since the magnitude and areal distribution of the usually complex resultant magnetic field at the surface of the earth is a function of the susceptibility1 of the involved matter, it necessarily follows that susceptibility determinations will afford valuable data for geophysical correlation. The present method was developed to meet the need for routine analysis of specimens in the geomagnetic laboratory where it was felt that general utility, ruggedness, ease of manipulation and reproducibility of results were of greater importance than extreme sensitivity. Electric Circuits The electric circuits are illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Current from the battery, B, passes through the variable resistance R1, reversing switch S1, double-break key K1 to switches S2 and S3. From S2 it flows through variable resistance R2, ammeter A2, to the primary coils of the fixed mutual inductance Mf and variable mutual inductance M,. . A mathematical model of reservoir behavior during one cycle of the intermittent steam injection process is presented in this paper. A cycle of the process is considered to be composed of three stages: injection, condensation and production. The model concentrates on behavior during the production stage. The influence of several parameters on production improvement is described, using the results obtained with a numerical equivalent of the model. Reservoir system parameters considered are thickness, reservoir thermal conductivity, oil viscosity, solution gas-oil ratio and the change in oil effective permeability with temperature. Operating parameters investigated are heat injection rate, steam temperature and cumulative injection time. In the face of considerable uncertainty, the model appears to give a fair prediction of the behavior observed during an actual test. This makes the model a useful means of selecting projects. It is shown that the model may also be utilized to select an optimum set of operating conditions for a particular project. Results of this study show the extent to which production improvement depends on each of the parameters investigated and give an indication of the range of system conditions within which the process would be effective. INTRODUCTION In recent years the intermittent steam injection or steam soak process of oil recovery has become a popular method of improving recovery in reservoirs bearing high-viscosity hydrocarbons. Production improvement due to the process results from heating the reservoir near the wellbore. The process is applied on an individual well basis and is executed in a series of cycles, each consisting of three stages: injection, condensation (the soaking period) and production. During the injection stage, high-pressure steam is injected into the reservoir surrounding the well-bore. This study assumes that injection is carried out over the entire vertical section of the reservoir rock that can be exposed to fluid injection. The condition of steam entering the reservoir is considered to fall within the following limits: (1) steam pressures less than 1,000 psig, (2) steam temperatures between 300 and 700F and (3) steam quality less than 90 percent. The last restriction is due to equipment limitations. Normally, injection re maintained for less than 3 weeks. After termination of injection, the condensation stage begins. The well is shut in for several days, supposedly to make certain that the injected steam condenses. This condensation would insure the retention of injected heat. The production stage is initiated when the well is opened again. Reservoir response during this stage determines the effectiveness of the process (response is defined as the oil production rates, the water production rates and the wellbore temperatures observed during the entire production stage). The immediate response of the reservoir is sometimes quite good. Sets of case histories by Longl and by Owens and Suter2 give some typical figures for response. Duration of the production stage is equal to the time needed for the oil production rate to decline to some predetermined value. This usually requires 4 to 6 months. Termination of the production stage coincides with the start of the next cycle. The process is continued, cycle by cycle, until it becomes unprofitable to continue. One simple model2 and two more sophisticated models3,4 of the process have been presented. These are based on fundamentally different assumptions than those used in this investigation. In a cooperative research effort, the US Bureau of Mines Denver Mining Research Center and the Pittston Co. investigated floor heave ground control problems that have plagued underground coal mining of the Beckley coalbed in southern West Virginia. Floor heave is accompanied by a redistribution of stresses and loads that are associated with underground openings, causing roof and pillar problems. The floor and roof analysis techniques that were used in the USBM/Pittston investigation may have a wide range of applicability in the mining industry. Recommended orientations and geometries for mining operations are directed at floor problems, but may also enhance roof stability.

The Effect of tin and hydrogen on the C0 parameter of a titanium. specimens were capsule cooled in water to eliminate contamination by water. Deybe-Scherrer photograms were obtained in a 114.6 mm camera with CuKa radiation. The parameters shown in Table I and Fig. 1 were calculated from the 213 (8569°) and 302 (8173.5°) reflections? no attempt being made to correct for systematic errors. The principal difference in method of preparation of specimens between this investigation and that of Worner was the use of pickling by the latter to produce X-ray diffraction samples. The possibility that hydrogen introduced by pickling was responsible for the lower a and c-parameters was investigated with the same 80 pct HNO3- 20 pct HF solutions used by Worner. The 6 and 10 at. pct specimens, the parameters of which had already been determined, were pickled and the c-parameters obtained are also shown in Fig. 1. The a-parameters, not shown, are also diminished. The quality of the lines obtained from the unetched and etched samples was unchanged, being quite sharp in both cases. It is quite possible that if corrections for systematic error carried out that the parameters obtained for the unetched samples would approach the data of Worner. In any event, the parameters of the etched samples would be still lower. The data obtained here is evidence that hydrogen in solution has contracted the c and a -parameters. Crystallographic Angles of Calcium Tung-state (Tetragonal, c/a = 2.169) K. Nassau In connection with the preparation and orientation of single crystals of calcium tungstate (Scheelite -CaWO4), the need arose for a stereographic projection for this tetragonal material. There appear to be no tetragonal projections with a c/a ratio above that of indium1 (c/a = 1.522) in the literature. In addition to its use for calcium tungstate, such a projection might find other more general applications and is accordingly presented below. The most recent X-ray diffraction work on CaWO4 is that of Swanson, Gilfrich, and Cook,2 where a summary of previous work is also found. Lattice parameters given are: a = 5.242A, c = 11.372A, and c/a = 2.169. The material is tetragonal with space group Table I, giving angles between crystallographic planes (HKL) and (hkl), was calculated from the formula3

There are two basic forms of the LPG-slug process: the gas driven and the water driven. The pressure required for miscibility between gas and LPG prohibits the use of the gas-driven LPG process in shallow reservoirs. The water-driven LPG slug process normally exhibits good sweep efficiency. However, displacement of the LPG by water is poor. An improvement in this process appears possible by injecting a slug of carbon dioxide between the LPG slug and the water drive. Laboratory experiments were conducted in homogeneous linear systems to determine the effect of pressure on the various displacement zones. In the carbon dioxide-LPG displacement zone, the effect of pressure on the displacement efficiency is negligible above the miscibility pressure. However, the displacement efficiency decreases linearly with decreasing pressure below the miscibility pressure. With water displacing carbon dioxide, it was found that the recovery of carbon dioxide after water breakthrough can be predicted from its solubility in water. A displacement test was conducted with LPG and carbon dioxide slugs large enough to avoid interference between the oil-LPG, LPG - carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide - water displacement zones. Under these conditions, essentially complete oil and LPG recovery was obtained. However, a substantial amount of carbon dioxide was left in the core at water breakthrough. INTRODUCTION It has been shown in homogeneous linear systems that essentially complete oil recovery can be obtained by displacement with a miscible fluid such as LPG. Economic considerations dictate that the valuable LPG also be recovered. Methods proposed for recovering the LPG include (1) displacement with natural gas at a pressure high enough to make the two fluids miscible1 (the disadvantage of this method is that the required pressure of about 1,500 psi is too high for shallow reservoirs) and (2) displacement of the LPG with water2 (principal disadvantage is that a large amount of LPG remains in the formation because of poor displacement efficiency). This paper treats an improvement in the water-driven LPG slug process3,4 where carbon dioxide is injected between the LPG and water. Carbon dioxide is completely or at least partially miscible with propane and soluble in water; thus, displacement efficiency is improved at both ends of the carbon dioxide slug. To minimize effects of other variables, all experiments were conducted in linear core systems. GENERAL PROCESS DESCRIPTION The displacements of propane by carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide by water are considered separately, assuming enough of each is injected to prevent mutual interference. Displacement descriptions are confined only to the part of the pore volume containing mobile fluids unless otherwise specified. The schematic representation is given in Fig. 1. Starting at the producing well, a zone containing only oil is followed by a zone containing a single-phase mixture of propane and oil. The concentration of propane increases in the direction of the injection well and ultimately grades to pure propane. Then follows a zone containing a mixture of propane and carbon dioxide in continuously varying proportions until 100 percent carbon dioxide is reached. In this zone, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the immobile water phase also varies from zero to full saturation. Whether the displacement of propane by carbon dioxide is of complete or partial miscibility depends on pressure and temperature (Fig. 2).
