A fast, easy, and inexpensive method of determining the consolidation of overburden in surface mining operations through seismic analysis has been developed. The method involves use of a refraction seismograph which measures overall consolidation of subsurface materials, including such factors as rock hardness, stratification or lamination, fracturing or jointing, and the degree of weathering or decomposition. It also is possible to determine the thickness of various layers of subsurface materials to depths exceeding 100 ft.

Because of U.S. Forest Service regulations and the consequent cost of leaving several diamond drill holes open at the same time, it was necessary to develop an electrical method that could be used in one hole at a time to extend known mineralization. This was achieved by balancing the surface current electrodes so that the two potential electrodes in the hole being surveyed were in the same equipotential surface. This condition eliminated stratigraphic response but enhanced any asymmetry due to ore between the hole and either current electrode. This method was successfully used in mineralized holes at West Fork, Reynolds County, Mo., to show the direction in which to extend the drilling into areas of better mineralization.

Leach water management is one of the few areas in dump leaching subject to operator control. As such, it is of considerable importance. Theoretical considerations indicate that high leach solution application rates are inefficient in washing solubilized copper from dumps. The high rates cause unnecessary dilution of copper values, raising unit recovery costs. Use of excessive amounts of leach solution also cools dumps, resulting in reduced leaching rates. This paper reviews leach solution application methods and details the results of field tests run to determine the benefits and feasibility of low versus high application rate techniques of applying water to dump surfaces.

Price is a complicated concept, for price is both a cause and an effect. This reciprocal aspect is commonly overlooked and the oversight is the source of many economic maladjustments. Price is the resultant of the ratio between supply and demand, but it differs from a mathematical concept of a proportion, by itself constituting an economic force which continuously alters the elements that determine the relationship. Price, therefore, is not merely the outcome of other forces but is in its own right one of the most powerful of economic agents. Price accordingly does not play a passive role; nor can it be sterilized or rendered inactive. In consequence, price cannot be fixed or at least kept fixed, except by the elimination of all freedom of choice on the part of producers and consumers. A primary objective of all economic activity is equilibrium. The same is true of a unit of economic activity, the single industry. The plane upon which equilibrium centers may shift in the course of time, but equilibrium itself is the point of departure and the point of return. If an industry is in equilibrium, that industry is operating effectively. The motivating forces of an industry—profits or the common good—are not to be confused with the prerequisite of equilibrium, but this mistake is often made. The producer is dominated by the profit motive; the consumer, or his collective representative, by the general welfare motive. No one is the advocate for equilibrium; that status is supposed to be arrived at automatically. If the forces of competition are perfectly free, such is the tendency. Equilibrium For the purposes of this analysis, equilibrium needs to be broadly defined and is conceived to involve: (1) balance between supply and demand; (2) internal equipoise amongst the elements within an industry; and (3) symmetry in respect to the whole economy. This definition implies flexibility and case of adjustment; a ready accommodation to change. Equilibrium does not postulate profits or nonprofits, social objectives or the lack of them. This study confines itself to an examination of the two million square miles of the northern hemisphere which the geographer defines as the terrestrial Arctic, a land region in which the mean temperature of the warmest month is below 50°F-in effect, the area lying north of the tree line. The engineering and human problems there are of a different order of magnitude than is generally true of the sub-Arctic. Whether in Dawson Creek or Matanuska, in Mo i Rana or Skelleftea such problems are of the same general order as in Hibbing or Noranda. The same is not true in Kong Oscar's Fjord or Lancaster Sound.

A simple disturbance in a gas reservoir travels with a finite velocity which is nearly independent of the amplitude of the disturbance. As a result very complex transients may be set up which seriously affect observation at a well. The time of transient is much longer than commonly supposed. INTRODUCTION A change in pressure at a gas well is not propagated through the reservoir instantaneously but with a definite fin- ite velocity. Knowledge of the period ! of this transient is of value because: 1. Observations of pressure and flow-rate during the transient may affect interpretation of back-pressure tests. 2. Interference effects between wells may be used to determine continuity of formation. 3. Additional information concerning the physical characteris- tics may possibly be deduced from the behavior of a well during the transient. MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT It will be assumed that the well is initially closed in and that the pressure is constant throlughout the reservoir. AUSTENITE is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic trans-formation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state.

When coal is irradiated by the X-rays emitted from a plutonium 238 isotope, the radiation absorbed by elements of low atomic number (carbon and hydrogen) is lower than that absorbed by elements of high atomic number (silicon, aluminium, iron) which form the ash in coal. The differences are reproducible and readily measurable, and this paper describes how this technique is used to determine the ash content of coal and to optimize measurement accuracy. Uses of the output signal are given with an example of a simple control circuit, and the advantages of instantaneous ash measurement are highlighted in terms of operational convenience and profit.

Oil development in 1934 has been largely restricted to drilling offset and lease requirement wells. Practically no effort has been made to discover new fields, chiefly because of price structure and proration allowance. A summary of developments during 1934 of necessity is brief. No state agency is maintained for the collection of data. The State Bureau of Mines issues permits for drilling and inspects the plugging of wells in coal-bearing measures only. Therefore data are not in existence with which to compile tables similar to those in other papers of this symposium. Forty-seven counties in the state produce oil, productive depths ranging from 100 to 5300 ft. Approximately 35 different formations in Ohio have produced either oil or gas. These reservoir rocks occur through a stratigraphic interval ranging in age from the shallow Goose Run sand of the Upper Pennsylvanian in Washington County to the St. Peter sand of Lower Ordovician in Seneca County. However, 75 per cent of these formations are unimportant from the standpoint of real production. Most of the oil and gas in Ohio has been produced from the Clinton, Oriskany, Berea and Big Injun sands and the Trenton Lime. Of these, the Clinton is first and Berea second in importance. Fields The oil and gas-producing territory of the state can be grouped into five fields or districts, made up of a series of "pools" usually separated by nonproductive areas, and is in no sense a belt of continuous production. Trenton Field of northwestern Ohio, is scattered through 15 counties. Development began in 1885. This field reached its peak in 1896 with a production of 20,575,138 bbl. for the year. For 1934, production had declined to 990,000 bbl. The oil is classified as Lima grade. Clinton Field extends from the Ohio River in Lawrence County to Lake Erie in Lorain, Cuyahoga and Ashtabula counties. First Clinton-

Procedures are described for scaling up turbulent friction pressure drops of inelastic fluids and laminar friction pressure drops of inelastic/elastic fluids in circular ducts. The laminar scale-up calculation method does not require the use of arbitrarily defined flow models, and can be performed directly from laminar capillary viscometry data, or by means of a numerical solution of the integral equation for Poiseuille flow, inputing true shear rate-shearing stress data from other simple shearing experiments. e.g. Couette and plane Poiseuille flows. The turbulent scale up procedure, based on the Dodge-Metzner correlation for inelastic fluids, requires evaluating the characteristic rheological parameters at the existing wall stress under laminar flow conditions. Since the wall stress is the quantity sought in a pipe flow scale-up problem, a trial-and-err or solution is indicated, and therefore a calculation method has been developed and programmed for a medium-size magnetic-drum-memory digital computer. Laminar flow data from other somces may also be adapted to this turbulent scale-upmetbod for inelastic fluids. Comparisons between predicted and experimentally observed friction losses for generalized Reynolds numbers ranging from 3 — 32.000 indicate an error band width of less than 10 per cent in circular tubes ranging in size from 0.5 to 1.89 in. in diameter. INTRODUCTION Considerable effort has been devoted to the problem of establishing an accurate procedure for predicting the laminar and turbulent flow behavior of non-Newtonian materials in pipes from data obtained with small scale laboratory or pilot plant equipment, as evidenced by the variety of reviews on the subject.1-3 Although there does not appear to be a universally accepted scale-up method for laminar flow, the various methods currently employed can be divided into two principal categories depending upon whether a functional relationship between shear rate and shearing stress is assumed, or whether a generalized correlation is adopted. The methods of Hedstrom4 and of Weltmann are typical of the first category, while the generalized correlation of Metzner and Reed6 illustrates the second category. Under appropriate conditions either approach yields a reasonably satisfactory description of laminar flow behavior. In contrast, the prediction of non-Newtonian transitional and turbulent friction losses is much more complex. For example, certain types of materials have been observed to sustain laminar flow at much higher flow rates than Newtonian liquids. When turbulence does develop, the level of agitation is damped to such an extent that the friction factor is lower than that of the original low viscosity Newtonian medium. Extremely broad transition regions and "diameter effects" have also been noted in the turbulent flow of certain chemically complex materials.&apos; Aside from the latter complications, which are attributed in part to viscoelasticity, the existence of a variety of scale-up procedures for predicting transitional and turbulent friction losses is due principally to the chioce of viscosity parameter used in the definition of the Reynolds number. In contrast, Dodge and Metzner have demonstrated that the friction factorReynolds number relationship for inelastic fluids can be satisfactorily generalized provided the fluid property parameters are evaluated at the existing wall shearing stress.* However, the quantity usually sought in a pipe flow scale-up problem is the wall stress, and hence a trial-and-error procedure is required when dealing with non-power law materials. In this report we discuss two calculation methods: (1) for determining the wall stress, and hence the friction pressure drop, for inelastic fluids under conditions of turbulent flow by means of an iterative procedure, and (2) for predicting laminar friction pressure drops without recourse to arbitrarily defined flow models.

IT is well known that high residual stresses are created in tubing by the sinking process, in which no internal tool or mandrel is used.1-4 In this process, the wall thickness is usually slightly increased.4,5 In tube drawing with a plug, the residual stresses are gradually reduced with increasing reduction of wall, and, by the conventional approximation methods of stress measurement, no stress is detected in tubing in which the wall reduction is over 50 per cent of the total reduction in cross-sectional area.1-6, It has also been observed that higher stresses are set up by the use of wide-angle dies than by the use of acute dies.2 The actual stress distribution in drawn .tubing has been investigated by a few workers,7-9 but has not been related to the conditions of the drawing process: Some attempts have been made to correlate accelerated cracking tests for stresses in brass products with the magnitude of the circumferential stresses and the condition of the metal.1-10 MATERIALS AND PREPARATION The material used in this experiment was commercial cartridge-brass (70 per cent Cu, 30 per cent Zn) tubing in the straightened and annealed condition.‡ This tubing was of various outside diameters and had a wall thickness of 0.032 in. It was sunk to 1/2-in. outside diameter by means of an experimental 10,000-lb. hydraulic draw-bench, with a maximum drawing speed of 8 ft. per minute. All dies were of 1/2 -in. diameter. Various die materials and contours were used in order to study the effect of die design on residual stresses in the tubing; the specifications for the dies are given in Fig. I. Castor oil was used throughout as lubricant. Chattering occurred in sinking some of the tubing, particularly when dies having the more acute angles were used, but the tubes showing chatter marks did not differ markedly from those with a smooth surface regarding the magnitude of residual stress. The source of the chattering has not yet been revealed. The wall of the tubing becomes thicker during sinking, as previously observed 4,5 The increases in wall thickness were 3, 7 and 9.5 per cent on the average for 6, 20 and 33 per cent reductions in diameter, no effect of the contour being noticeable. The reductions mentioned throughout this investigation do not consider this fact, but are reductions of the outside diameter. For the evaluation of the residual stress two fundamentally different methods were used. The approximation method1,11 of splitting a certain length of tubing was employed to obtain a bird&apos;s-eye view of the effect of various drawing conditions on the circumferential stress measured by the diameter change occurring on splitting. THE fact that the surface plays an important role in the plastic deformation of a single crystal has been demonstrated by several investigators. The surface conditions have been altered using oxide films,1&apos;2 alloyed metal layers,3, 4 deposited metal films,&apos; and polycrystalline layers.677° The resulting effects on the initiation and subsequent plastic deformation have been investigated extensively except for the case of a single crystal surrounded by a polycrystalline layer of the same material. The purpose of this paper is to describe an investigation of the effect of a polycrystalline surface layer on the yield stress, the critical resolved shear stress, and the work-hardening slope of tin single crystals. The tin single crystals used in this study were grown from the melt using material having an initial purity of approximately 99.999 + pet with lead and iron the major impurities. Fig. 1 shows the orientation of the (110)[001] slip system with respect to the crystal surfaces. The crystals had a 1/4 by 1/4 in. cross section and a gage length of 2 in. The polycrystalline surface layer was produced by abrading the single-crystal specimens with emery paper. Fig. 2 shows the broken Debye rings obtained from the deformed surface. The thickness of the layer was controlled by the number of passes on different grades of paper and was determined by electropolishing in dilute HC1, until the grains produced by the abrasion had all been removed. Metal-lographic examination showed that the grain size varied with depth, increasing from 10 µ right at the surface to 40 µ in the interior of the layer. With a platinum electrode the Eh-pH response in aqueous systems follows an empirical relation [Eh = E- 0.059 pH](1) where E usually carries a value between 0.8 and 0.9 v. The same potential (E) is observed with a number of other noble metal electrodes in the absence of surface poisoning and of other well-defined redox couples. Many sulfide mineral electrodes also respond in a similar manner in solutions containing their respective ions over wide pH ranges, especially in the alkaline pH region. Such a parallelism between noble metal and sulfide mineral electrodes points to certain implications of their surface conditions, and the flotation and leaching behaviors of sulfide minerals under aerated conditions may be inferred with respect to the foregoing Eh-pH response. Comparison of Sulfide Mineral and Noble Metal Electrodes [Fig. 1] shows the Eh-pH response of pyrite, galena, chalcocite, and pyrrhotite electrodes, reported by Sato, and some experimental points obtained with a platinum electrode in distilled water. THE subject of transverse fissures in steel rails has been discussed very thoroughly in recent years from various points of view and the final opinions expressed may be roughly classified into two groups: (1) That these fissures are the result merely of fatigue of the steel and are independent of the quality of the metal. (2) That the quality of the metal and the mill practice must have something to do with them. The first point of view was most-ably and logically presented by J. E. Howard,1 and in the discussion of this paper, as well as in several other preceding publications, Dr. P. H. Dudley, Consulting Engineer of the New York Central Lines, has strongly defended the other opinion.2 The steel makers of the country have naturally rallied under Mr. Howard&apos;s banner, hoping to place the entire blame for these. failures upon the railroads with their high wheel-loads, hard steel, heavy traffic, and sometimes inferior roach-bed; while the railroad men,, on the other hand, have been busy accumulating statistics and records in the effort to find an actual reason in the rails themselves that would account for the seemingly haphazard occurrence of transverse fissures under varying conditions and at widely separated points. The view that these fissures were due merely to normal fatigue under alternating stresses seemed most reasonable to the writer until quite recently, because from work clone in this laboratory, as well as the work of other investigators of the problem, no structural differences, in the vast majority of cases, were found between metal at the nuclei of transverse fissures and metal at similar positions in the same rails or in other rails that had not developed fissures. . Nickeliferous laterite ore from Sukinda, Orissa (India), consists of very fine particles agglomerated into larger aggregates. The ore is chemically and mineralogically complex and presents many characterization and beneficiation problems. In this study the results of a detailed investigation to characterize the ore by several techniques are discussed. Various techniques used for characterisation include elemental analysis, electron microscopy, electronspectroscopy for chemical analysis, x-ray and electron diffraction, differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, EDAX analysis, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopy. Generally one method compliments the other and it is shown that a combination of several techniques is necessary to fully characterize the ore. The scope and limitations of the techniques are also discussed.

PRODUCTION of sound bronze castings is a matter of great practical interest to users and manufacturers of high-grade non-ferrous engineering specialties. Although there has been much excellent research in this field, there still remains some confusion regarding the fundamental principles underlying production of really sound bronze. The literature of the past 20 years on this subject indicates that the prevailing opinion of metallurgists and foundrymen has been that unsoundness in bronze is due generally to oxidation. SMALL things are customarily moulded in two ways (unless they have undercut parts which hold them in the moulds); that is in clay, or with natural or which artificial earthern powder made in halves in either wooden boxes or bronze frames. This also depends on whether the object is larger or smaller. Now if you wish to mould with moist clay, you must grease your relief with oil or pig fat; apply a dusting of charcoal, ashes, or cuttlebone on it; or gild or silver it dry with gold, silver, or tin foil. Then, first make with moist and somewhat firm clay a plate as, thick and large as can conveniently hold your relief, and carefully set the latter halfway into this and let it dry. Then, greasing or dusting it again, make the other half. When both are well dried, take out your relief and at the top make its gates and vents. If plastering is needed, do it. Finally, bake the halves, fit them together, and tie them well, as you wish, using the procedure that I taught you in the discussion of brass. But if one has to make a large quantity of works of one kind, he should for the sake of convenience use the method with powder [120] because it is short and requires less time and expense. Therefore if you wish to do this, you need to have several pairs of bronze frames or wooden boxes, higher than half the relief that you wish to mould, and of convenient length. On a flat board always keep half of one of these frames full of powder that has been slightly moistened for moulding, as I told you, so that by pressing with the ends of the fingers and with the hand it holds together as well as possible. Level it off with a cutting tool and when leveled put a flat board over it and turn it over. Turn it on to a dusting of ashes so that it will not stick, dust it on the other side, and remove the excess by blowing it off Then mould the thing that you wish to mould, pressing it halfway in once or twice, always taking it out and putting it back again. Then the other frame is fitted in its place and filled with earth by pressing and squeezing it carefully. Then it is leveled off on the outside with a sharp tool as you did with the other part, and then one of the parts of the frames is lifted up with the point of a knife or some other tool and,

We are concerned with the destabilizing effects of water inflow and remedies which can be used to reduce that cause. The number of these remedies which have already been demonstrated in mining may be a surprise. Several possible remedies, well known in other work seem worth trial. In saw mines the destabilizing effect of inflow is negligible; in others it can be disaster. Inflow can reduce stability in mining for very nearly, if not all minerals, whether by open pit or under- ground methods. It might cause trouble in saw under water work. As examples of these effects consider hydrostatic pressure on the walls of fractures and &apos; lubrication&apos; of clay seams. Skin protection by paint or gunite is not likely to help. It is generally necessary to go deeper, for example to drain the ground more effectively or to reduce inflow. The improvement of stability is but one of a score of possible advantages attainable with water control. Most of these advantages would help costs as wet mines go deeper for leaner ore while coping with more restraints and higher costs of per, labor and supplies. Investigation is promising!
