THE value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an, invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both, surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,1 has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.2 A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the percentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. The Buick mill is located at the site of the old Buick general store, approximately 4 miles south of Bixby, Missouri on route KK. It is a part of the operations in the area now called the "New Lead Belt". The ore body lies at an elevation of 270 feet above sea level, and is fairly flat lying, becoming slightly deeper toward the south. The mineralization is due to the secondary deposition of galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, calcite, dolomite and some localized drusy quartz in a country rock of dolomitic limestone. The galena is fairly coarse grained with some large crystaline structure, and some oxidized surfaces. The sphalerite is fine grained- small crystals containing Cd (about 0.7%) and Ag (about 10 oz per ton) in solid solution. The chalcopyrite is fine grained, fine crystals that are sometimes massive in nature. The mine plan is a modified room and pillar system. Broken ore at the mine face will be transported to several different ore passes by rubber tired load-haul-dump units. Ore passes will drop the ore to a rail haulage level some 90 feet below the mining level where bottom dump cars will deliver it to a 42 in. Nordberg gyratory crusher. Two 12 ton capacity skips in balance carry the ore some 1,200 feet to the surface. The hoist is equipped with automatic controls for loading, hoisting and unloading.

Although 1931 witnessed no new discoveries of oil or gas in Oklahoma, the year is especially outstanding because of price demoralization, political intervention, abandonment of marginal properties, a strict curbing of oil flow from wells in flush fields and an extension of proration into settled fields. In spite of a strict, adherence to proration agreements, the price per barrel of oil sank from 65c to $1.07 to a low level of 10c to 22c. Table 1 gives the price range for crude oil in Oklahoma during the year. Under a martial law order by the governor, a period intervened from Aug. 4 to Oct. 10, of complete shutting in of the flush fields. This condition created an abrupt decline in the production curve during the two months' period. Oklahoma, as elsewhere, is passing through a "transition period" of relieving expensive above-ground storage by maintaining the more copious supplies of crude oil in the natural reservoirs. For many years the thousands of small, nearly depleted wells have been considered as being the "backbone of the industry." A large number of wells of this type are now idle or completely abandoned. More than 1100 abandonments were recorded by the state Corporation Commission during the year. The industry is becoming less interested in these small wells, replacing the former attitude by the curbed potentialities of flush pools. The overall success of many strip coal mining operations depends primarily upon the efficient use of draglines to remove overburden. These machines require enormous capital investment and unless used efficiently the profitability of a venture is adversely affected. It is important that the dragline works continuously and it is imperative that the walking path and other facets of its operation be predetermined exactly so that the desired production rate is achieved with a minimum of non-productive time. Details of dragline operations which are of particular interest are walking path, prediction of best cut and positioning to maximize production, the angle of swing which produces the swiftest operation, optimum fill factor allowable for the type of material and conditions of ground, the maximum depth from which it can excavate and operating level with respect to the elevation of the high wall. The aims of the present paper are: 1. To establish a cut-off point in the cost-depth ratio. 2. Predict the most economic method of stripping in a given area using graphical plots of walking path implemented with information necessary to ensure optimum production. The optimum operating efficiency of the dragline in relation to the terrain and other conditions imposed on its operation will be evaluated. The model is based upon operating data which has been collected from site observations of a large strip coal mining operation in Central Queensland, Australia.

IN his paper on the calculation of hardenability from chemical composition, Grossmann1 discussed the effect of most of the alloying elements used commercially. The purpose of the work reported in this paper was to determine the effect of several other elements on hardenability-arsenic, antimony, beryllium, cobalt, columbium, germanium, tellurium, tin, aluminum, and titanium-and to extend the range of composition of some of the elements studied by , Grossmann-chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel and silicon. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS To determine the effect on hardenability, suitable amounts of the alloying elements were added to experimental heats and the hardenability determined by means of end-quenched hardenability specimens. The steels were melted in a high-frequency induction furnace with a basic crucible, using ingot iron as a base for some of the heats and S.A.E. 1015 for others. The alloying additions were made as ferroalloys or as metal, depending on the ' alloying element. Hundred-pound heats were split and poured into square, tapered, cast-iron ingot molds with hot tops. Aluminum was not used as a deoxidizer in most of the heats. The ingots were homogenized for 12 hr. at 1260°C. (2300°F.) , and forged into rounds of 1 ½ in. diameter. These bars were normalized twice from 840°C. (1550°F.) before machining into Jominy bars. MANY investigators have attempted to determine the true nature of the internal changes taking place during aging. Merica, Waltenberg and Scott1 were the first to propose a theory of age-hardening. They attributed the age-hardening of duralumin to the precipitation of minute particles of the compound CuA12. Later Zay Jeffries and R. S. Archer2 augmented the above theory by suggesting that the small CuA12 particles acted as "keys" causing "slip interference." Many other investi-gators3 have devoted much time to the mechanism of age-hardening, some corroborating the "precipitation" and "slip interference" theory, others coming to different conclusions because of effects that to them seemed unexplainable by the early theories; e.g., the increase of electrical resistance upon aging, the fact that no change in lattice parameter could be detected during the early stages of aging even at elevated tempera-tures, and the fact that the density did not change as would be predicted. In 1932, Merica revised4 his earlier precipitation theory to take care of these presumably anomalous effects. This revised theory, the "knot" theory, assumes that substantial age-hardening occurs before actual precipitation of solute as discrete particles. The assumed mechanism is one of diffusion of solute atones into groups forming distorted regions which act as "hard" spots and cause slip interference. These "knots" are assumed to have approximately the same lattice arrangement as the solvent.

(written dlscussion ?) .-It is interesting to observe how closely Mr. Hansen agrees with other investigators to the effect that the art of electrolytic zinc has left the realm of mystery. In his introduction, lie has said practically what Thomas French said in his paper "The Future of Electrolytic Zinc. "1 The successful electrolysis of zinc from sulphate solutions has not been an easy matter, and it is only within recent years that the difficult problem of depositing high-grade zinc has been satisfactorily: accomplished on a commercial basis. The principal requisite is. that the electrolyte shall be quite free from certain impurities. The methods by which freedom from these impurities is assured are now very well understood, and with experienced superintendents there is little difficulty in obtaining a high efficiency in that part of the process. When certain underlying principles are recognized, the difficulty encountered in dealing with the filtration of the acid and slimy solutions also largely disappears, although it has been a very serious one to the uninitiated. In the dissolving of the zinc from the roasted ore, there is nothing which any competent chemical' engineer cannot undertake, and any other operations connected with the electrolytic process are either of little or no difficulty, or are common to the retort process. Mr. Hansen also agrees with R. G. Hall's statement in " Some Economic Factors in the Production of Electrolytic Zinc:"2

Today, there are four alternatives available for disposal of highly toxic, non-radioactive hazardous waste: deep well injection, chemical processing, landfill and incineration. However, based upon research conducted by the author, a fifth alternative now exists. Disposal in salt. Salt, because of its chemical characteristics, is an ideal medium for retention of inorganic hazardous waste. Except for a few elemental compounds such as lithium and potassium, there is no reaction with sodium chloride. In the family of inorganic wastes, there are basically seven suites of waste that may be mixed together without any chemical reaction. The process developed by the author would be to take a suite of waste, either dewater or add moisture, add a solidification agent to the mix and slurry pipeline the mass into a cavern. Residence time before hardening can be adjusted, but the nominal time until full solidification is 48 hours. Once solidified, the mass will reach compressive strengths exceeding 3000 psi. The slurry can be introduced into an evacuated cavern pumped free of brine, or it can be placed beneath the brine and the waste will force the brine to the surface. The latter technique requires a high degree of engineering control to prevent contamination of the brine leaving the cavern-thus creating more hazardous waste and additional problems. The Environmental Protection Agency endorses the concept both at the research level and within EPA Headquarters. The technology will soon be utilized in a salt formation in Texas.

FACED with rising costs, the mining industry is looking to new methods and equipment to supply the relief necessary for profitable operation. Conveyor transportation is rapidly taking a superior position to motor tramming in underground mines because of lower installation, maintenance, and operating costs. Haulage is always a critical problem in underground mining. The ease of operation and flexibility of a haulage system can have an important effect on ultimate mining cost. With the average tenor of ores on the downgrade, larger tonnages are required for the same metal recovery. This selection of a tramming system can be the key to a successful, paying plant. Because this shift is being made at an ever advancing rate, it may become necessary to tailor mining operations to the transportation system, rather than to select a haulage system fitting set mining methods. In choosing a haulage system, the relative costs of the various methods are of the greatest importance. Adapting the mine to one or the other type of tramming is not considered in the cost analysis, and very likely would make little difference, outside of location of drifts and raises. In the cost sheet, the problem presents recommendations for a conveyor installation and a comparison of equipment, installation, operation, maintenance, and power costs are made. Although coke is the acknowledged metallurgical fuel, and has been extensively used in this country for more than thirty years, yet the facts on record in regard to its physical properties are exceedingly meagre; and this is also true, but in a less degree, of its chemical composition. An investigation is being carried on in the National Museum which is intended to supply, so far as may be, this deficiency, and through the kindness of Professor Baird, Director of the Museum, I am permitted to present to the Institute a summary of a portion of the results already obtained. So far as I am aware, the credit for the first systematic investigation of the physical properties of coke belongs to Mr. John Fulton, Mining Engineer of Cambria Iron Co. The results of this investigation have been published in Report L, Second Geological Survey, Pennsylvania, 1875, and in a pamphlet setting forth the advantages of the Connellsville coke, the latter published also by the " Virginias"* His results are not altogether free from experimental errors, and the assumption that "the specific gravities of coke and water are very nearly alike "- is scarcely warranted. It has seemed to me, therefore, desirable to make an independent investigation of the physical properties of coke on a plan somewhat different from that adopted by Mr. Fulton. This is the investigation now being carried on at the National Museum.

This chapter reviews the steps which should be taken from the time it is decided to consider autogenous grinding in the development of a new ore deposit or the expansion of an existing plant up until the purchase of the new autogenous mills. In this case the term autogenous includes semi -autogenous, secondary pebble mills, and lump milling as well as fully autogenous grinding systems. Also, both wet and dry grinding alternatives have been included. Before the test program it must be decided how many bulk samples are required to properly assess the autogenous grinding possibilities of the deposit. Also, a decision must be made on where and how the samples are to be ground i.e. pilot mill at site or in established location, wet and or dry grinding, etc. In the test program itself, certain fundamental data must be obtained. The testing should include enough work to determine whether fully autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding should be used and what type produces best power efficiency. Also, all the other pertinent data should be collected such as power; tonnages; feed, charge, and product sizing; circulating loads, etc. If a secondary mill is required to produce a final grind the decision on whether a pebble or ball mill should be used may require additional test work. Finally, the concentration of the mineral may play an important part in selection of the circuit and should become a part of the final testing once the grinding has been established.

THAT the path of brittle fracture in temper brit-tle steel differs from the path in unembrittled steel has been known for some years1 More recently it has been recognized that alloy steels, at least, display two forms of temper brittleness1 which may be called upper-nose and lower-nose. No experimental evidence has been published, however, to show that the two forms can be distinguished by simple inspection of brittle fractures. Fig. 1 is a photograph of the fractured surface of a V-notch Charpy specimen of SAE 3140 steel in which temper brittleness developed during heat treatment in the lower-nose temperature range.' The steel was austenitized 1 hr at 900°, tempered 1 hr at 675", and embrittled 48 hr at 500°C, with water-quenching after each treatment. The temperature of transition from ductile to brittle fracture in the Charpy test was + 2°C (criterion of transition: 100 pet fibrous). The hardness was Re 25; the austenite grain size ASTM 8. This specimen was broken at 150°C in the standard Charpy test and absorbed 6.6 ft-lb; its fracture was rated 0 pet fibrous. Fig. 1 shows that the fracture appeared rough to the naked eye. At the side of the specimen away from the notch (the side which was in compression during the test), the surface as a whole deviated sharply from a plane. HERETOFORE, there has been very little study of the effects of various metallurgical factors on the behavior of thermoelectric materials, the need for which is evident if optimum processing and design of thermoelectric devices is to be realized. Accordingly, we have undertaken such an investigation on the thermoelectric materials bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy and in this paper present some preliminary results which merit consideration, in particular the relatively high thermoelectric power and figure of merit values obtained for the Bi-12Sb (at. pct) alloy powder compacts. The thermoelectric parameters for ingot and powder compact specimens are determined and the results are compared with published data for single crystals. Preparation of Materials. The bismuth and antimony used in this investigation are six nines pure. Melting and casting of the ingots was carried out in air for expediency, since most oxidation unavoidably occurs during the preparation of the powder by filing of the ingots. Chill cast ingots of pure bismuth were prepared by pouring the melt into split copper chill molds, and unidirectionally solidified ingots of bismuth and Bi-Sb alloy were obtained by slow directional cooling in pyrex tubes. All melts remained bright during melting and casting, indicating minimum oxidation. Powder for the powder compact samples was obtained by filing the ingots with a fine and coarse file to give a variation in the particle size of the compacts. IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

QUESTIONS raised during earlier investigations of the preferred orientation in titanium1 and zirco-nium sheet led to the examination of the rolling and annealing textures of beryllium and hafnium sheet. Since the c/a ratios are 1.568 and 1.584, less than that of ideal close packing, 1.633, it would be expected that the preferred orientations would be similar to those exhibited by zirconium and titanium. This was found to be true. However, in several regards the orientations observed for beryllium differed from those reported by Smigels-kas and Barrett4 and so are given here. The okientations for hafnium are presented since only the cold-rolling texture has been reported in the unclassified literature. The pole figures were determined by transmission using an X-ray spectrogoniometer with copper Ka radiation and the automatic pole-figure recorder designed by Geisler described previously.6 The intensity units in the pole figures in this case are only arbitrary since calibration against a random sample of the same material was not considered necessary for the original purpose of the examination. The beryllium sheet, cold-rolled from 0.036 in. to 0.006 in., a reduction of about 84 pct, exhibited a split texture with the [1010] direction in the rolling direction as shown in Fig. 1. THE behavior of mixtures of immiscible liquids in porous solids is of rapidly increasing interest to those engaged in the production of petro-leum. The operation of artificial water-floods and the control of natural ones immediately raise questions concerning the fundamental nature of such processes. Moreover, it is now recognized that often water occurs dispersed throughout the rock from which the oil issues into the well,1 and thus tends to move toward the well simultaneously with the oil. The work reported here is a laboratory investigation of the simultaneous, steady-state flow of oil and water through the same column of uncon-solidated sand. It is thus directly related to the situation in which water occurs in oil-producing sands; it may have less direct implications for the displacement of oil from sands by water. However, it is to be clearly understood that the experiments to be described were performed pri-marily to obtain information of a more or less fundamental nature, and are not an attempt to reproduce, on laboratory scale, any part of an oil field. The dynamic behavior of a system in which oil and water are flowing simultaneously through sand is best described in terms of its "effective permeability" to either phase. For incompressible fluids flowing through a system of uniform cross section, the effective permeabilities to the two phases, in darcys, may be defined by the equations:

IN recent years, there have been a number of experiments conducted to determine the rates of heating and cooling of various sizes and shapes of steel ingots. Up to date, however,-most of the published data has dealt with small sized ingots, the largest being an 18-in. (46 cm.) cube, the data on which was presented before the Iron and Steel Institute in May, 1918, by E. F. Law. It is due to thus lack of information on the rate at which large ingots absorb heat and come to temperature that the heating- practice varies so widely in different plants. One of the questions over which there is much debate is the proper rate of heating of large ingots for forging and the time actually required for the center of a mass of steel to come to forging temperature. As a continuation of experiments described by M. E. Leeds1 and at the request of Mr. G. R. Norton of the Sizer Forge Co. and Mr. R. C. Drinker of the Emergency Fleet Corpn., the test described in this paper was carried out on a 24-in. (61 cm.) round ingot and the rate of heating and cooling determined under regular production conditions. The ingot had been partly forged at one end but, on developing a flaw, had been scrapped so that it was available for test. The size and shape of the ingot and its position in the furnace are shown in Fig. 1.

IN preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,1 and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary.

For many years mine surveyors and exploration engineers have sought an accurate means of transferring meridian underground by using the gyro-compass. These efforts have generally failed, either because they were inaccurate or because the size and cost of the unit were prohibitive. During the past ten years, however, great strides have been made. Autonetics in California has developed a comparatively light-weight (100-lb) gyro-theodolite, and the Institute for Mine Surveying at Clausthal Mining Academy in Germany has developed an instrument that is accurate to within 20" to 30" of arc. Concurrently, Minneapolis-Honeywell has produced an astounding gyro, the size of a salt shaker, that weighs less than 0.5 lb and compares favorably in performance with the 50-lb gyros of conventional design. This unit, designed for missile guidance, should be adaptable for surveying small boreholes. Given the proper interest and approach from the engineering fraternity, excellent gyro- compasses could probably be available for accurate underground survey work at nominal cost within the next three years. Principles of the Gyro-Compass: The gyro- compass, used for 50 years as a navigational instrument in ships and aircraft, senses the turning axis of the earth and points out true polar north. It does this by employing the earth's rotation, the force of gravity, and the precession characteristics of a gyro. For further details the reader is referred to several excellent publications1-3 covering the principles and application of the gyroscope.

A BLAST can be "full of sound and fury," signifying nothing but a poorly confined charge, or it can be a muffled, well controlled explosion which moves the rock efficiently and places it in the desired location with the least amount of fuss and bother. Why one method will do the job and another proves to be almost useless is shown by the machine-gun camera studies of quarry blasting made by the Atlas Powder Co. staff. The sequence, or machine-gun, camera is the latest scientific device for the study of cause and effect factors in blasting. Movie cameras, previously used, although of some use, were limited because slow shutter speeds and small negatives failed to give clear, sharp prints. During World War II, the AAF developed the sequence camera, which figuratively stops the blast at regular intervals, making study and evaluation feasible. The camera is simple and inexpensive and offers material for accurate examination of blasting techniques. The machine-gun camera takes three 5x5 in. exposures per sec at a 1/450 sec shutter speed, four times faster than a movie camera. Negatives are 30 times larger than those of movie cameras, giving large, sharp prints. The rock movement is frozen on the picture as the sequence of the blast takes place. Pictures on this page show the advantage of individual machine gun photographs. But the sequences made possible by this camera give graphic, dramatic and conclusive support to recently developed detonation theories.
