AS we contemplate the bestowal of the John Fritz medal year after year on men of wide-world dis-tinction in the various fields of engineering, men who in one way or another have given impulse and direction to the progress of mankind, the question becomes inter-esting as to what manner of man was John Fritz and what were the qualities that singled out his name to be so conspicuously associated with the world's great scientific and industrial achievements. If, as Lowell said, it is the duty of the nation to pro-duce great men, our country surely rose to her oppor-tunity when she guided and guarded the career of John Fritz. Starting life as a blacksmith with no advantages of education, without influential friends or the favor-ing accidents of fortune, he advanced steadily in use-fulness, power and respect of his fellowmen until by common consent he occupied the first place in the domain of the steel industry of this, country. The numerous honorary scientific memberships conferred upon him in this country and abroad attest the esteem in which he is held by his fellow engineers. Twenty years after his retirement from active business at the age of seventy, he lived to enjoy, as few men have been permitted to do, the fame and the friendships which he had so amply earned. His sterner qualities of industry, integrity and sterling character were re-lieved by unfailing human sympathy, humor and spon-taneous good-will toward his fellowmen. To all who

This communication points out that serious errors exist in some current treatments of the random fracture of solids, including the prior treatments by Klimpel and Austin, Gilvarry, and Gaudin and Meloy. The problem considered in all of these papers is: what cumulative weight versus size distribution is expected for the fragments produced by fracture of a particle? The basic assumption made is that fracture surfaces propagate in random directions from weak flaws in the solid (these weak flaws being activated to fracture by applied stress), with the activated weak flaws distributed at random spatially within the solid. The previous treatments considered fracture in three dimensions, and all use similar physical models, although the mathematical techniques were somewhat different. We first noticed that these treatments were in error when we attempted to reduce the equations developed to the simple case of fracture of a one-dimensional particle, e.g. a long, thin fiber which breaks along its length. For this simple case, it is readily shown that the assumption of random fracture leads to the expression P(V) = (r/Vo) (1-V/Vo) r-1 dV (1) is the probability of occurrence of a fragment of length within the range V to V + dV; V being length dimension, from r random fractures passing through an original size of Vo to produce r + 1 fragments. This equation agreed with the one-dimensional form of an equivalent equation in the original Klimpel-Austin treatment. Introduction SINCE about 70 per cent. of the total cost of mining is due to underground work which is out of sight, it is essential that expenditures should be made here to the best advantage. A great many mistakes have been made which were expensive, but perhaps these have not even been detected by mine owners. In the future these may be minimized to some extent, especially if there is cooperative effort on the part of each employee. I have been interested in this subject for some years and have tried to deduce principles and methods. These have proved highly advantageous and may also be of help to others. Some corporations, like the United States Steel, and the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., have done a great deal in this field by having stated meetings of their organizations, with the view to interchanging ideas among their men and educating them along the lines of concerted effort. Since no man knows all about the various branches of mining, it is advisable that frequent meetings of the operating department be held for the interchange of ideas and that all members of the organization have an opportunity to express themselves on the various subjects. It has often been found that in discussions between heads of departments, foremen and bosses, many valuable suggestions may be obtained which promote the best interests of the company. The method regarded as the most conducive to cooperative effort, and pursued by the organization, is to analyze and develope the different phases of various mining subjects at regular meetings.

There he was engaged in perfect.ing the various kinds of gases, and while thus employed was gassed several times, which so affected his heart and lungs that he was unable to withstand an attack of the influenza which developed into pneumonia, from which he died at the end of 24 hours. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Lebanon, and belonged to the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Lebanon Lodge 121, I. 0. 0. F. and Camp 65, P. 0. S. of A. Lieutenant Bernhardt Edward Heine Bernhardt Edward Heine, a lieutenant in the Aviation Service of the U. S. Army, died as the result of a fa1I1 in an aeroplane at Fort Sill, Okla., on Aug. 10, 1918. The accident occurred on Aug. 2, when the machine in which he was flying with Lieutenant Carsons fell from a height of 1500 ft.; Lieutenant Carsons was instantly killed, but Lieutenant Heine died from his injuries a week later. Lieutenant Heine was born at Mount Clemens, Mich., in 1895. After attending the local High School he entered the Michigan College of Mines, and became a Junior Member of the Institute while still a student. He graduated in 1916, with the degree of B. S. In 1914 he served as a transitman for the engineering department of the City of Hancock, Mich. Lieutenant Heine had been in the army since 1916, having been with the 'troops at 'the Mexican border. He had been in the Aviation Section since August, 1917.

Froth flotation has been described by several authors" as being analogous to a first-order rate process. Although a few investigators"," have found orders other than one fit their data best, the rate is described most often by the first-order equation, [ ] where r is rate of disappearance of floatable mineral by flotation, C(t) is concentration of floatable mineral in the cell, t is time, and k is first-order flotation rate constant. One of the difficulties in using this rate equation to develop a mathematical description of an actual flotation process is the determination of a suitable value of the constant k. The value of k, which reflects the floatability of the floatable mineral, is dependent on the hydrodynamic conditions in the cell, type and concentration of flotation reagents used, pulp density, and pH, method of froth removal, aeration rate, particle characteristics, and many other factors. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that each particle of floatable material has a distinct value of k and that a unique distribution of k values exists for given feed and cell conditions. This has been observed and discussed by several investigators, and mathematical descriptions of the batch cell and steady-state continuous cell with distributed flotation rate constant have been developed." The mathematical description in the form of a transfer function of the continuous or flow cell under unsteady-state conditions with a distributed flotation rate constant has not been presented in the literature. THIS short note on the probable character of the organic sulfur compounds in coal can do no more than indicate lines of research. We have no new experimental work to describe, nothing comparable in value with the careful studies of American coals by Powell and Parr1 and Yancey and Frazer.2 A study of the manner in which sulfur compounds exist in British coals (and their behavior on heat treatment) is rendered increasingly necessary by the fact that the British reserves of good coking coals of reasonably low sulfur content are fast being depleted. We believe that it is essentially by a study of the modes of formation, occurrence, and decomposition of the various types of inorganic and organic sulfur compounds in coal that it will be possible, with hope of success, to attack the problem of purifying coals, otherwise eminently suitable for coking, from these objectionable ingredients. Sulfur, so far as is at present known, does not normally occur in the free state in the coal conglomerate, but is chiefly distributed, irregularly, in three forms: 1. As primary constituents of the coal conglomerate, organic in nature and probably associated with those molecular complexes that have resulted from the degradation of the proteins of the plant tissues responsible for the formation of the coal mass. These constituents can be classed as "organic sulfur." 2. As metallic sulfides, e.g., iron pyrites. 3. As metallic sulfates, e.g., calcium sulfate and ferrous sulfate. (The occurrence of these compounds varies with the occurrence and degree of degradation of class 2.)

This treatment may be accomplished by wrapping the single crystal tightly in very thin, dead soft, brass foil and annealing in the presence of air for 20 hr at 800°C. Since the wrapping encircles the sptcimen three to four times, only a very slight amount of oxidation occurs on the specimen surface. On unwrapping one of these cylindrical single crystals. in. in diam by ro in. long (72.75 pct cu, 27.23 pct Zn, 0.01 pct P11, 0.01 pct re), mall light-gray depnrrits in the form of circular arcs werenoted on the part nf the foil which had been in contact with the single crystal, Fig r. (By superim- approximatetl). These deposits, which, from their color, suggest the appearance of sublimated zinc, were found to coincide roughly with a set of octahedral planes nearly perpendicular to the rod axis. The pattern shorn in the figure held no relation to the profle of the sample since the markin~s on the crystal More annealing werc attributed to traces of cube planes. It seems very likely that the deposits were formed by sutllimation of zinc diffusing from octahrdral planes since diffusian would Eogically take place along planes of maximum atomic spacing. However, it is difficult to understand why a continuous sublimation of zinc should occur from a single crystat in contact with a wrapping roil OF the same composition, and why diffusion would take place along specific octahedral planes and in a regular pattern.

In mining, all unit operations are closely interrelated, and the results of blasting are probably the key factor within that sequence. The drilling program prior to blasting is just as dependent upon the desired rock fragmentation as are the loading, hauling, and mechanical crushing operations which are economically and technically influenced by the results of blasting, namely, the size and scatter of the product. What is known today as optimum blasting is the process of designing a blast in order to obtain a certain degree of fragmentation so that overall mining costs are minimized. Applying this criterion often results in a different program than when an individual blasting pattern is chosen only on the basis of the lowest operational cost for that pattern, disregarding what comes before or after the blast. [Fig. 1] shows the characteristic variation of mining unit costs with the degree of fragmentation, or the maximum size of blocks obtained from blasting. From the figure, it can be seen that optimum breakage must correspond to the lowest total costs, but reducing drilling-blasting costs only does not achieve such an optimum solution. Methods of designing surface or underground blasting operations should comply with the optimization criterion, but this compliance is feasible only if a detailed mining system analysis is available. Therefore, predictions of costs of loading, transporting, and mechanical breakage of ore as a function of its size will define a narrow range of variation for drilling and blasting parameters in order to get the minimum total costs.

One of the more obvious phenomena which relate to coke formation is that soft coals of low volatile matter content tend to yield hard or high strength cokes while hard coals of high volatile matter content tend to yield soft or low strength cokes. This observation led researchers of the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia Univ. to study the possibility of using Hardgrove grindability as a supplemental rank indicator for coking properties. Grindability has been used for many years as a means to measure the resistance of coal to comminution but it has rarely if ever been considered for evaluating coals for carbonization. The coal proper- ties which are measured by grindability are complex, but recent work with the difficult-to-correlate high volatile coals has demonstrated that a 93% correlation exists between grindability and the total petrographic rnicrinites, exinites, and resinites. This work demonstrated that inherent ash had no apparent effect on the grindability of high volatile coals, suggesting that the coal substance is apparently harder than the associated ash. These observations, together with the patented Burstlein process," indicate that the distribution of hard and soft components in the individual high volatile coals and blends of coals may be quantitatively interrelated to coke stability through selected ranges of coal volatile matter. The objective of this progress report is 1) to demonstrate the statistical relationships which exist between coal grindability and the numerous coal petrographic entities and 2) to present the results of initial studies concerning the correlation of the coke physical strength index of stability with coal volatile matter and grindability.

TheRe has been, during the past year, a wealth of report data and discussion relating directly or indirectly to various phases of ventilation of metal mines, and many of the data are from foreign sources. The phase of the subject most generously accorded the attention of the technical press is that of cooling mine air, with much less attention to other fairly intimately associated features such as fan performance, friction factors, fires, mine gases, mine lighting, health of miners, and ventilation standards. Cooling Mine Air South Africa, with its very deep mining on the Rand and with fairly high working temperatures, 'contributes the most definite data on the subject of cooling mine air, and undoubtedly the most interesting issued are those from a paper by J. H. Dobson,' in which he gives a comprehensive review of the subject as gleaned largely by analyzing the data in three papers.2 Dr. Dobson's summation is decidedly interesting. In general it is recognized that the introducing into the mine and circulating to the working places of large volumes of pure air is the most effective method of giving deep, hot metal-mine workings reasonably efficient working conditions. A tabulation as to the cost of securing various amounts of cooling by circulating various volumes, from 230,000 to 760,000 cu. ft. per min., indicates that there are cost limits beyond which increase of quantity of air in circulation is impracticable, as the annual cost of circulating 230,000 cu. ft. of air per min. in a certain mine at a depth of

IT is known qualitatively that the recrystallization behavior of platinum is dependent upon the amount and particularly the nature of impurities present, the amount of prior cold-work and the annealing time and temperature, but published data are limited. A study of the effects of cold-work and annealing temperature on the hardness of a sample of very pure platinum was undertaken to supply part of this information. CONCLUSIONS 1. The platinum used in the experiments had a probable platinum content of 99.99+ per cent, and had the following mechanical properties in the completely softened condition: Vickers hardness number, 39.4; ultimate tensile strength, 19,340 lb. per sq. in.; proportional limit, very low; elongation, 37.5 per cent in 2 inches. 2. The effect of cold-rolling on the hardness is shown in Fig. 1. The hardness increases rapidly up to 10 to 15 per cent reduction and more slowly up to about 75 per cent reduction, beyond which it increases more rapidly. 3. The recrystallization temperatures for a 15-min. anneal, after cold-rolling 19, 39.5, 50.8, 66, 80.5 and 89.5 per cent reduction in thickness, are approximately 765°, 700°, 635°, 600°, 545° and 425°C., respectively. 4. The recrystallized grain size of this platinum is a function of the percentage of cold reduction, being larger the lower the percentage of cold-work. 5. Little or no grain growth resulted from subjecting recrystallized samples to higher temperatures or annealing for longer times.

IN THE year just past there were produced in the United States about 170,000,000 tons of sand and gravel. Much of this was pit-run material used for gravelling roads and as railroad ballast on lines that did not carry heavy traffic. But more than half of it was marketed as washed and sized, or graded, material. The methods used for preparing sand and gravel for the market have long been used in ore dressing and, as in ore dressing, depend on differences in the specific gravity of two substances or in the size or weight of particles. But many changes in the design and operation of plants and machines have been necessary. In ore dressing, the concentrate is only a small part of the feed; in sand and gravel washing, it is much the larger part of the feed. In addition, such close work as is needed when con¬centrating a metallic ore is not needed when washing gravel; the ability to put through a large tonnage is more important, and sizing, which is only a preliminary process in ore dressing, is an end to be attained. Rock crushers are found in most sand and gravel plants and they are used to break up the larger pieces from the deposit (known as boulders and cobbles) which are removed by a scalping screen. The crusher discharge is usually sent back to the scalping screen, the perforations in this screen setting the maximum size of the finished product.

The rapid increase in the use of pulvcrulent adsorptive materials in the so-called "contact filtration" process for decolorizing lubricating oils makes it desirable to consider some of the basic principles involved. The commercial methods and types of equipment now used arc fairly well known, having been extensively described in the trade journals. In spite of this very little has been published concerning the factors which must be considered in the selection of a process or of a decolorizing ing material. It is commonly understood that contact filtration more or less closely follows the laws of adsorption. These principles have been thoroughly drscribed by Gurwitsch.' The contacting of neutral mineral oils seems to be adsorptive in character and apparently follows Freundlich's law of adsorption which may be expressed by the formula: X = Color material adsorbed hy the clay. M = Amount of clay used. C = Concentration of color material after equilibrium. A and P = Constants for a given oil and clay. Fig. 1 shows the decolorization curve for a natural, dark colored cylin-der stock when contacted with various quantities of clay, curve R being made with natural Riverside Texas fuller's earth and T being made with an acid-treated clay from Texas. As the Tag-Robinson color is inversely proportional to the depth of color, the reciprocal of these colors ran be assumed to be a funct ion of the concentratlion of coloring matter. A new process is described for extracting uranium from ores containing sulphidic minerals, which comprises treating an aqueous pulp of the ore with air or oxygen at elevated temperatures and pressures. The acid required to dissolve the uranium is generated during the leach through oxidation of the sulphides. The chemistry of the process is discussed and laboratory results are presented to illustrate the operation of the method and the variables which control it. With most ores, leaching at a temperature of 130°C and an oxygen partial pressure of 10 psi provides uranium extractions of 90 to 95 pct in 4 to 6 hr. The acidity and level of dissolved impurities in the leach liquor can be kept fairly low. The method is characterized by a number of advantageous features including low reagent cost, short retention times, and high recoveries. RECENTLY there have been developed several processes for extracting metal values from ores by pressure leaching techniques;' -' an example is the carbonate leaching process for uranium ores which has been studied in this laboratory.' Leaching is carried out under oxygen pressure to ensure oxidation of the uranium to hexavalent compounds which are soluble in carbonate solutions. During the course of investigations relating to this process, it was observed that sulphide minerals, such as pyrite, usually were oxidized under the conditions of the leach treatment resulting in the formation of iron hydroxides and sodium sulphate, i.e. 2 FeS= + 7Vz O2 + 8 Na,CO3 + 7 H,,O -* 2 Fe(OH)3 + 4 Na2SO4 + 8 NaHCO.,. Man: A purely detached consideration of nature and the place of man in it may easily result in somewhat pessimistic conclusions as to man and his destiny. However, when we come to the evaluation of man's role in the development of natural resources and his achievements in this field, a more optimistic tone may be justified. Hence the possible contradictions between Man and Nature, Perfection, and the present chapter are more apparent than real. After all, progress must have a foundation of optimism, and we cannot challenge either the faculty or the students to better work and to a progressive and constructive outlook without an underlying tone of optimism and basic faith in the future. Geology is the basic science of Mother Earth; the science of the natural forces that have produced and modified the structure of our globe; the science of minerals and rocks; of landscapes and soils; of water supply and mineral resources, including mineral fuels; and of the history of life, both plant and animal, as revealed by fossils in rocks. It is difficult to reduce man and his historical significance to their proper relationship with regard to the earth and its history. Processes of rock formation have continued for at least two billion years; man's activities have been in evidence only a few thousand years. As a means of comparison, if the height of the Empire State building were to represent geologic time, the thickness of a nickel placed on the tower would just about repre-

Self-diffusion in single-crystal tungsten and diffusion of rhenium tracer in single-crystal tungsten have been measured over the temperature range 2660° to 3230°C by direct sectioning and radio-chemical analysis of W185 and Re183 and Re184 tracers. The initial radioactive layer was produced on the diffusion specimens by bombardment with 9.0-mev deuterons. Diffusion heating of the samples in high vacuum was accomplished by induction heating. Temperatures were measured by optical pyrometry, and the system was calibrated ALTHOUGH a considerable body of experimental information has been accumulated on self-diffusion in solids, the major part of the detailed work has by reference to the melting points of tantalum (2996°C), molybdenum (2620°C), niobium (2468°C), and rhodium (1966°C). The diffusion coefficients for the two systems, obtained by least-squares analyses of the data, are well-represented by the equations thus far dealt with relatively low-melting systems. Diffusion studies on the high-melting elements niobium,1 tantalum,2,3 and tungsten4'5 have been limited to polycrystalline material, for which data interpretation and theoretical analysis are sometimes difficult. Only recently, a study has been made with single-crystal molybdenum.6 The present work deals with the measurement of self-diffusion in single-crystal tungsten at temperatures approaching the melting point (3410°c).7 Since the method chosen for producing the radioactive tracer layer-bombardment with deuterons—produced detectable isotopes of rhenium as well as of tungsten, the diffusion of rhenium was measured also.

Oceanographers are tooling up. Back of the build-up is Navy defense work and private business. Business is dipping toes in the ocean gingerly and not sure whether the motivation is based on logic or intuition. The problem is that new business opportunities in the oceans could explode rather than evolve. The question is when. At stake for earthlings are food supplies, mineral resources, oil and gas, weather forecasting, navigational systems, shore erosion control and sewage disposal, as primary targets. "Twenty years ago, offshore oil seemed a remote possibility for economic exploitation but today it is a reality. It became a reality largely because of the development of practical ocean seismic equipment and drilling platforms. Today the oil industry is looking at submerged-type drilling rigs. Mineral exploration in the sea is more expensive than on land now primarily because familiar land tools are being modified for sub- marine work." These were the ideas expressed by C. G. Welling of Lockheed Missiles & Space Co., at one of the many meetings that have taken place so far this year on development of marine resources. Welling's views indicate the rationale of companies that have already invested in the sea. Many companies, including those in mining, have observers who caution, "go slow." The continental shelfs and even the deep ocean floor represent to the mineral industries the age-old, enigmatic confrontation-is this the time to move? To no other industry, except Defense, are the results of correct timing so vital.

Vanadium has recently joined the growing list of mineral commodities being exploited by surface mining methods. Union Carbide Corp. controls several vanadium deposits in central Arkansas near the city of Hot Springs in Garland County and the community of Magnet in Hot Spring County (Fig. 1). Two open pit mines, located approximately five miles southeast of the city of Hot Springs in the Wilson Springs area, have been developed for production during the past two years. Adjacent to the mining area the company has recently completed a 1,600-ton-per-day (tpd) processing plant to treat the Wilson Springs and Magnet Cove ores (Fig. 2). Although this operation constitutes the largest vanadium mining project in the United States, the open pit mines are of moderate size. A number of small to medium-sized surface mines will be developed during the life of the operation. This chapter describes the methods and practices used to bring these recently discovered vanadium deposits into production. PRELIMINARY EXPLORATION The vanadium potential of the deposits near Hot Springs and Magnet Cove was first investigated by Union Carbide Corp. in 1960. These areas have long been of interest for their varied mineral content and were previously explored by government agencies and private interests for titanium, columbium, molybdenum, and uranium. Sublevel stoping has been used in Finland since the 1930's and today more than ten under- ground mines have adopted it as their main stoping method (Fig. I). Approximately 80% of the total underground tonnage is mined by sub- level stoping (Table 1) The first mines to introduce the sublevel stoping method in Finland were limestone mines. The development of sublevel stoping was very slow up to the mid 1960's when the switch to trackless mining started and the increase of mechanization lead to higher capacity and productivity. The method itself has been almost the same since the 1950's when long hole drilling was introduced. According to a future prognosis sublevel caving will give way to sub- level stoping; on the other hand, open pit mining will at the same time grow rapidly with some new mineral orebodies, which will he brought into production. Most Finnish orebodies are, however, only marginal ores and they could not support mining with more expensive methods than open pit mining or sublevel stoping. The future of sublevel stoping seems relatively bright. GEOLOGICAL AND ROCK MECHANICAL BACKGROUND The rock mechanical conditions in Finland are in general relatively good and the rocks firm. The compressive strength is normally 40 - 150 Mpa and modulus of elasticity 40 - 200 Gpa. Low values are common in altered and fractured rocks and near the ore contact Rock stress measurements have been carried out already for 20 years for mine design and monitoring purposes. The results of these measurements show that relatively high horizontal stresses seem to be common (Fig. 2).
