AS part of a programme of experimental work on single crystals of rhenium and ruthenium, it was found necessary to have the crystallographic angles for these elements. The angles given in Table I were determined to the nearest minute of arc, by Univac Computer. The angle $ between (HKIL) and (hkil) is given by the formula: The angles given for rhenium should be particularly useful in view of the increasing interest in this element. For completeness, angular values are also given for cadmium zinc and magnesium; these form a more complete set of values than those given by Salkovitz.' The assistance of Professor J. Hobstetter and Mr. J. Crozier in the programming of this data is acknowledged. The work is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research under contract No. NONR 551 (19).

DR. HARRISON W. CRAVER. Dr. Craver was born in Owaneco, Illinois, August 10, 1875. He was educated in the public schools of Carmi, Illinois, and Terre Haute, Indiana, and the Rose Polytechnic Institute, from which he was graduated in 1895, having specialized in industrial chemistry. A GIFT of $10,000 to the endowment of Engineering Foun-dation, made by the Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corporation, has been announced. In transmitting this gift T. R. Beal, president of the corporation, made the follow-ing interesting statement: "You may be interested to know that this amount was in fact earned by our employees by their more efficient opera-tion of the physical properties under their care. It rep-resents $10,000 of return premiums paid during the past year on accident insurance, as the result of the company's excellent record in preceding years, so that we take greater satisfaction in making this gift as it is related, in some degree at least, to the higher standards of engineering and operating practice to which the work of the Foundation per-tains."

An error occurred in the preparation of Fig. 3, p. 249, of Basic Statistical Measures Used in Geo-chemical Investigations of Colorado Plateau Uranium Deposits. This figure shows the relation of the arithmetic mean: geometric mean ratio to the geometric deviation. Curves for the cases where n, the number of samples, is 100, 10, and 5 are too high with respect to the ordinate. The error is negligible at low geometric deviations, but becomes increasingly greater wi,th higher values of geometric deviation. Arithmetric mean values in Table I1 are not effected by the errors in Fig. 3. The authors will endeavor to supply copies of the revised curves on request; write to: A. T. Safety records in the mineral industry for 1954 will do well to hold their own as compared with 1953, because of the poorer rate in the coalmining branches, even without the recent mine explosion at the No. 9 mine of the Jamison Coal & Coke Co., Farmington, W. Va., that killed 16 persons. .The cause of that disaster has not yet been ascertained. The metal-mining branch appears to have improved its record over the last year, however. Health Diesel equipment continues to be favored in non-coal mines. Equipment includes locomotives, trucks, tractors, and muckers. Of major concern and interest is the establishment of a new threshold limit for oxides of nitrogen-5 ppm as compared with 25 ppm. This gas is the most harmful component of diesel-engine exhaust gas

Stuart Manwaring Buck, a member of the Institute from the first year of its existence, and one of its Managers from 1883 to 1885, died at his home in Bramwell, West Va., on July 16, 1921, at the age of 79 years. He was the son of David and Matilda S. Ruck of Boston, and was educated at Williams College, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and at the School of Mines at Freiberg, Germany. Mr. Buck was one of the pioneers in the development of the coal fields of West Virginia. From 1872 to 1877 he was connected with the Kana-wha and Ohio Coal Co. as engineer and as lessor; from 1877 to 1888 he was general manager of the East Bank Coal and Coke Co.; from 1888

To counteract the spiralling costs of labor and materials against the fixed sale of its product, namely, gold at $35 per oz, Homestake Mining Co. has revised the milling flowsheet once and effected increases in the daily milling rate twice in the past 12 years. During this period the mining department has been able to hold production costs steady by increased productivity through technical improvements and utilization of the most modern mining by CLAUDE E. SCHMIDT and FRANK M. HOWELL, JR. 46-MINING ENGINEERING, APRIL 1963 equipment. The flowsheet alteration occurred during 1951-1953 when the two crushing plants at the shaft head frames were converted to a three-stage crushing system with the third stage closed circuited to produce a minus 5/8-in. product as rod mill feed.

A few months ago I had the honor of addressing the Society of Mining Engineers annual banquet in Sun Francisco. I have since been asked to amplify some of the remarks I made at that time concerning the management policies of the Kaiser organization and various aspects of our corporate thinking. This is a difficult task for an insider like myself. I look at the different companies, and the men who run them, and it is hard to think of these men in terms of policy or procedure. Actually I prefer the term management philosophy to either policy or procedure. My father, Henry J. Kaiser, is not only the founder but the guiding spirit of our organization. His philosophy, and in turn that of the organization, centers around two concepts, service and accomplishment.

Due to their heterogeneity, most rocks fracture with a zone of distributed cracking ahead of the fracture front. This makes linear elastic fracture mechanics inapplicable. The present study describes a mathematical model in which the progressive microcracking is taken into account by strain-softening stress-strain relation. In a simpler version of the model, the triaxial strain-softening stress- strain relation is obtained by direct adjustment of the elements of the compliance matrix. This formulation is rigorous only if the principal stress directions do not rotate during fracture formation within the fracture process zone. As a more sophisticated and generally applicable model, the so-called microplane model which is an analogue of the slip theory of plasticity is outlined. Comparison with fracture data for various rocks are given.

Ceramic projectiles made from 94% to 99% alumina with a nominal mass of 3.1 gms were fired into granite blocks. The average compressive strength of the ceramic was 800 MPa and that of the rock was 135 MPa. Flat, ogive, conical and pyramidal nose shapes were evaluated at velocities ranging from 450 to 1400 m/sec. It was found that the conical and pyramidal nose shapes at the higher velocities did a significant amount of damage to the rock. On the average, they removed 10 5mm3 of rock and were six and ten times better than the flat and ogive nose shapes. It was also observed that increases in volume occur in discrete steps. This process is highly dependent on the ability of the projectile to penetrate the rock.

A variation of the longwall retreat system using friction props developed in coal mining is used extract a sedimentary manganese deposit at the San Francisco mine, Autlan, Jalisco, Mex. The Compania Minera Autlan, operating the mine, is partially owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. Roof control problems under a number of mining and strata conditions that defied uniform theoretical approaches led to a variety of experimental approaches that subsequently resulted in practical mining systems. Geologically, the area is one of considerable volcanic activity. The rocks are nearly flat-lying to moderately dipping conglomerate, tuff beds, inter-bedded porphyritic sills and felsitic lava flows. The formations overlying the manganese horizon are badly fractured and vary in thickness from 50 ft at the collar to 1400 ft in the deeper parts of the mine.

The Department (formerly called State) of Tolima, which is beginning to attract considerable attention in this country on account of its mineral wealth, comprises an area of 18,415 square miles, lying between latitude 1" 34' 25" and 5" 44' 12/" N. and between longitude 74" 25' 45" and 76" 34, 25" W. from Greenwich. It is bounded on the north by the Department of Antioquia, on the east by the Departments of Cundinnmarca and Cauca, and on the south and west by the Department of Cauca. It is the most recently created of the States of Colombia, having been established by decree of April 12th, 1861, and being composed of the old provinces of Mariquita and Neiva, and of the districts Melgar, Carmen, Cunday and Santa Rosa, of Tequendama.

BOTANICAL methods of prospecting for metalliferous ores are based on the premise that deposits at depth may be reflected chemically in surface vegetation. For the past several years, on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission, the U. S. Geological Survey has investigated on the Colorado Plateau the application of botanical methods to uranium prospecting. Results suggest that orebodies may be found under a considerable cover of barren sandstone through the absorption of uranium and associated trace elements by plants growing at the ground surface. Plant physiologists have demonstrated that uranium is a necessary nutrient for plant growth and therefore is present in all plants.' The amount present is small but measurable. The absorption of uranium by plants growing over ore deposits forms the basis, therefore, for a method of prospecting by plant analysis.

A study has been made of the relationships between grinding selection functions and physical properties of rocks, particularly the failure loads of irregular particles and the compressive and tensile strengths of large regular specimens. The rocks used were limestones of various structures and impurity contents, a carbonatite, and a high-purity crystallized calcite. The selection functions were obtained from carefully performed grinding experiments on selected narrow size ranges in various grinding machines-a laboratory batch ball mill, a Hard grove grindability machine, and a mill of the type suggested by Yang, Mempel, and Fuerstenau. The specific rates of breakage during milling and the failure loads of irregular specimens correlated well for the rocks studied. The testing of irregular particles is suggested as a means of predicting the behavior of commercial mills.

INTERNAL The year 1976 was another outstanding year in the operation of the Institute and in the success of its varied activities. Total AIME membership reached 59,773 for a gain of. 6.4 percent. Total revenue increased to $5,111,2 10, up 22.4 percent, and balance sheet assets increased to $8,479,612, up 12.2 percent from the previous year. AIME and its constituent units conducted 30 technical meetings during the year, and attendance was up at most of them. Publications issued by the Constituent Societies continued a healthy growth. During the year 9 new local Sections were established, and at the end of the year the Institute had 150 Sections, with 19 of them overseas. Details on all of these operations are on pages 2 and 3 of this report.

THE central washing plant of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Corp. was first operated in 1918 to furnish coal for two 60-oven batteries of Koppers design. Prior to that time the coke for the blast furnaces had been secured from a number of beehive operations, some with their own washeries. The original washery had four Elmore jigs, which did not do as well as had been expected. In 1923 the jigs were taken out and replaced by Deister Plat-O tables, with various changes in auxiliary equipment. In 1936 the throughput of the plant was considerably increased by the installation of vibrating filters for recovery and drying of fine coal, thereby reducing a large recirculating load of fine coal which passed through the screens of the Carpenter driers.

The rapid transformation has been ascribed to the presence of the primary a phase which provided nucleation sites and which permitted preferential partitioning of oxygen to the a phase and of uranium to the COMMERCLAL heat treatments are designed to produce certain strength and toughness character- istics by controlling the microstructure of an alloy. A desired distribution of microconstituents is achieved in practice by treating an alloy under the correct time-temperature conditions. Data obtained from development drilling provide the basic input for open pit mine planning and design. Development drilling is defined as delineation of the size, mineral content, and disposition of an ore body by drilling boreholes (Thrush, 1968). The objectives of development drilling are: ( 1 ) determining the geometry of the mineralization, ( 2 ) determining the grade and tonnage, , ( 3 ) obtaining samples for metallurgical testing, and ( 4 ) obtaining geotechnical data for mine design. To accomplish these objectives, an appropriate drilling plan must include the number of holes, the spacing and orientation of the holes, and a suitable data collection program. The data collection program covers sample collection, hole logging, and data presentation. This chapter will present some guidelines for development drilling and data collection techniques. The operational aspects of drilling will be covered in an- other chapter.

The use of electrokinetic or zeta-potential phenomena in studies of the properties of mineral sulphides has increased greatly over recent years. This review aims to examine and discuss the body of literature on the subject of electrokinetic properties of sulphides in a comprehensive and critical manner. Although the review covers the period from 1925 to 1975, it is only in the past ten years that researchers have been fully aware of the implications and problems of chemical reactions, notably oxidation and precipitation reactions, on the surface properties of sulphide minerals. These papers are discussed in more detail than the earlier publications. A table containing a list of determinations of iso-electric- points and points-of-zero-charge of mineral sulphides, and the methods employed in obtaining these results, is presented.
