THE following is a brief account of the methods of measuring intelligence especially prepared for use in the U. S. Army, of typical results, and of some of their immediately practical applications. It has been prepared for the assistance of army examiners and for the information of all who are interested in the relations of scientific placement to military efficiency. PURPOSE OF THE INTELLIGENCE TESTS Under the direction of the Division of Psychology, Medical Department, and in accordance with provisions of War Department General Order No. 74, mental tests are given recruits during the 2-wk. detention period. These tests provide an immediate and reasonably dependable classification of the men according to general intelligence. Their specific purposes are to aid: 1. In the discovery of men whose superior intelligence suggests their consideration for advancement; 2. In the prompt selection and assignment to development battalions of men who are so inferior mentally that they are suited only for selected assignments; 3. In forming organizations of uniform mental strength where such uniformity is desired; 4. In forming organizations of superior mental strength where such superiority is demanded by the nature of the work to be performed; 5. In selecting suitable men for various army duties or for special training in colleges or technical schools; 6. In the early formation of training groups within regiment or battery in order that each man may receive instruction and drill according to his ability to profit thereby;

GEORGE OTIS SMITH, the Institute's new presi-dent, continues the long tradition of close asso-ciation between the organization and economic geology. Several preceding presidents have been eco-nomic geologists, and a gen-erous share of space in the TRANSACTIONS has always been devoted to that subject, one of critical importance to the miner as well as the seeker for ore. Mr. Smith has long served the Institute, hav-ing been a director since 1921 and first vice-president since 1927. He was born in Hodg-don, Me., on Feb. 22, 1871, and graduated at Colby College, where he took his A.B. and A.M. He did graduate work at Johns Hopkins, where he re-ceived a Ph.D. in 1896. Meanwhile he had engaged in field geological work in Michi-gan, Utah and Washington with the Geological Survey. In 1896 he joined the regular staff of that organization, be-coming director in 1907. He has been with the Survey con-tinuously since he first joined, with the exception of one year when he was furloughed to serve as a member of the U. S. Coal Commission. His special interest for many years has been in the eco-nomic aspects, in the larger sense, of the mineral in-dustry, matters that are necessarily the subject of strong differences of opinion, but which he has dis-cussed with good temper though with full adherence to his strong con-victions.

DEWATERING is a major problem in the preparation and utilization of fine-sized coals now being recovered in increasing amounts from colliery effluents, refuse banks, and silt ponds. Of the various methods which have, been proposed for dewatering fine coal, gravity drainage is probably the oldest and most widely used, and yet little information on this subject has been published. Consequently a laboratory investigation of gravity drainage phenomena was undertaken not only to provide basic data for predicting the drainage behavior of fine coals in cars, bunkers, basins, and silos, but also to obtain some understanding of the moisture retention properties of fine coal. Because of practical interest in the problem, a reproducible laboratory technique, which simulated plant conditions as closely as possible, was developed for the evaluation of drainage variables. The ap- paratus selected consisted of vertically-mounted lucite columns, nominally 4 to 8 ft in length and 2, 3 or 6 in. in diam; the bottom of the column was provided with a rubber stopper through which was inserted a -in. diam drainage tube; a wad of glass wool was placed on the upper part of this outlet tube to retain the coal and a plug was temporarily located at the lower end to prevent drainage during charging of the column, see Fig. 1. The thermal conductivity of aluminum alloys is of considerable industrial importance. This is particularly true in such applications as internal-combustion engines where one of the principal reasons for the use of these alloys is their relatively higher thermal conductivity. In spite of this, relatively few data are available on this property of aluminum alloys. The reason is quite apparent to anyone concerned with the experimental determination of coefficients of thermal conductivity. This determination, in theory so simple, is extraordinarily difficult if any high degree of precision is desired. Fortunately, some .knowledge of the relationship between thermal and electrical conductivity has permitted the use of the latter physical property in deducing the relative approximate values of the thermal conductivities of metals. This fundamental relationship, first enunciated by Wiedemann and Franz' as applying to metallic elements and later shown by Lorenz2 to be applicable to alloys within a single metallic system, has been of service in the industrial application of metals. The electrical conductivity of metals is easily determined with a high degree of precision. It is, therefore, quite desirable that the relationship between electrical and thermal characteristics be determined with the greatest possible precision. This paper presents data on the electrical and thermal conductivities of a number of aluminum alloys of industrial importance. Literature on Thermal Conductivity of Aluminum Alloys Masumoto3 determined the electrical and thermal conductivities of 18 aluminum alloys. His results indicated a relatively constant relationship between thermal and electrical conductivity.

GRAVITY surveying with the torsion balance or the pendulum for ore prospecting purposes has generally not been considered practical or even possible. It is the intention of this paper to show that a fast and sensi-tive gravimeter can be very useful in ore prospecting, as an auxiliary to the electrical and magnetic instruments. A number of gravimeters have been constructed and put in practical use in the last seven or eight years; for instance, by Ising, Lejay-Holweck, Haalck, Hartley, Thyssen, Noergaard, the Humble Oil and Refining Co. and the Gulf Production Co. Their main application, apart from their use for geodetic surveys, has been for structure mapping in oil prospecting. There is no record that any of them have been used for ore prospecting. About the middle of 1934 the Boliden Mining Co., in Sweden, began experiments in constructing a static gravity meter sensitive enough for ore prospecting. Calculations and considerations that will be discussed later in this paper showed that this would necessitate an accuracy in the measurements of 0.1 milligal-roughly, one ten-millionth part of the total force of gravity. The first successful practical field tests of the instrument were made in January 1936. About the middle of 1937 the Boliden gravimeter was perfected. Ore prospecting with this instru-ment is now regular practice in Sweden, especially for the testing of indications given by geoelectric and magnetic methods.

A NUMBER of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing.. These publications demonstrate both, the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish -to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. Mills Day left a journal of his travel to Ohio and return by way of Pittsburgh in 1810. He left this comment about western Pennsylvania: "June 19. As I proceeded toward Pittsburg, (From Washington and Canonsburg) the country grew more populous. The hills appeared to consist of strata of freestone, iron, coal, and slate. June 20. Its (Pittsburg's) water communication with a vast extent of country and the immense beds of coal in its immediate vicinity render it a place peculiarly adapted to manufactures. Coal may be obtained of a good quality, ready delivered at 5 cents a bushel."1 Until within a year or so of this period, coal was used for domestic purposes, brick-making, by blacksmiths, etc.; now the industry entered a period of rapid growth caused by the introduction of the steam engine. As manufacturing was increasing due to the settlement of the western country, the additional facilities created by mechanical power were welcome. Apparently the first engine was installed in Pittsburgh, in a steam grist mill, in 1808; it is described in the Navigator of 1811: "The water of the boilers are heated by large fires made of stone coal, which is introduced at one end into a grated fire place as long as the cylinders themselves; the quantity of coal consumed daily by these boilers is said to be about twenty bushels, which cost one dollar." The predominant methods for mining coal in the USA are room and pillar and longwall. Approximately 95 percent of the coal is mined by room and pillar and 5 percent by longwall. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has an ongoing program to improve the rate, quality, and cost effectiveness of stabilizing the roof for both of these mining systems. In room and pillar mining, the installation of permanent roof support is often the task which paces the system operation, and it thus controls the level of production achieved during any mining shift. Two automatic roof bolt insertion equipment developments are discussed, as well as a flexible drill for operation in thinner seams. Progress will be reported on under- ground trials of a particular flexible drill which has been combined with a bolt inserter to form a compact, reliable module for retrofitting to continuous mining machines. In longwall mining, the use of hydraulic supports on the working face provides roof stability. The DOE has several trials ongoing with shield- type supports in difficult strata conditions which are described, as well as a co-funded project with the Bureau of Mines on a resin injection remedial method for consolidating a shear zone at one site. A project to improve the match of strata conditions to shield design is also described, which involves the use of a 1360 tonne vertical load mine roof simulator.

PHYSICAL properties have been used for a long time in characterizing different kinds of coal, and physical properties, such as friability and slacking, have been included with chemical properties in grouping coals according to the widely used system of classification adopted by the U. S. Geological Survey. Nevertheless, the usefulness of physical properties for classifying the different ranks or kinds of coal has been limited because it has not been possible to express these properties in definite form as numerical values. Because of the present wide interest in the formulation and adoption of a satisfactory system of coal classification, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the College of Mines of the University of Washington, has recently completed a study of the physical and chemical properties of approximately 100 different coals ranging from lignite to, anthracite. PURPOSE AND SCOPE For this investigation samples were collected in approximately 45 mines and prospects in Washington and 23 mines in other states. The following studies, in addition to proximate and ultimate analyses, were made of the samples: Determination of (1) friability, (2) slacking or weathering characteristics, (3) yield of products by low-temperature carbonization in a laboratory retort, and (4) agglutinating value. Most of the coals examined were subjected to each of the tests enumerated, but with coal of some ranks this was unnecessary in some instances, and in others it was not feasible to do the work involved.

The motion of individual grain boundaries under a constant driving force was investi,qated for zone-refined lead, with and without solute tin additions. The rate of boundary migration was found to depend strongly on tin content and on the orientation relationship between the adjacent grains. The results are compared with the theory of impurity-controlled grain boundary miqration developed by Lucke and Detert. Evidence was found that grain boundaries separating grains which have the Kronberg-U&apos;ilson orientation relationships of 38 and 22 deg about <Ill> and 28 deg about <100>, correspond to boundaries of high mobility. The results are discussed in relation to the formation of annealing textures in metals and the structure of high-angle boundaries. It is generally known that small amounts of impurities in solid solution greatly influence the re-crystallization behavior of metals. For example, the addition of 0.005 at. pct of tellurium to copper,&apos; or 0.005 at. pct of silver to lead,2or 0.01 at. pct of manganese or nickel to aluminum3 greatly decreases the rate of recrystallization of these metals. However, this effect may be the combined result of a decrease in the rates of both nucleation and growth; recrystallization experiments do not separate these two factors. Bolling and winegard4 determined the effects of small quantities of tin, silver, and gold on grain growth in polycrystalline zone-refined lead.

The removal of hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors from iron ores becomes of interest when a duplex flotation process is considered for upgrading, when a pelletizing process is considered for a concentrate floated with a fatty acid or a soap collector, or when a disposal of froth products from cationic silica flotation is of environmental concern. Ozone can oxidize organic compounds rapidly, thereby removing the hydrophobic coatings of flotation collectors. Ozone is widely used for treating and purifying drinking water, waste water treatment, and for chemicals processing (Murphy and Orr, 1975; Rice et al., 1980). Its uses in metallurgical operations, however, are very sparse (Allegrini et al., 1970; Chernobrov and Rozinoyer, 1975; Ishii et al., 1970; Iwasaki and Malicsi, 1985; Matsubara et al., 1978). Yet, its high reactivity and the absence of potentially hazardous byproducts become of interest in destroying flotation reagents adsorbed on mineral surfaces or remaining in mill water for recycle or for discharge. Duplex Flotation A duplex flotation process, as applied to oxidized iron ores, would involve a fatty acid flotation of iron minerals followed by an amine flotation of the siliceous gangue from the rougher iron concentrate. Such a process has been used in the Florida phosphate fields. Fatty acid coatings cannot be removed as readily with a simple acid or alkali treatment from iron oxide surfaces as from Florida phosphates. A combination of reagents, such as lime and quebracho, lime and alkali phosphate, or sulfuric acid and oxalic acid, has therefore been proposed. In a previous article (Iwasaki et al., 1967) , the use of activated carbon was found to be effective in removing fatty acid coatings both in the duplex flotation and the pelletizing processes. The use of ozone offers another approach to the removal of fatty acid coatings from iron oxide surfaces. To investigate the possible application of the duplex flotation process, a specularite ore from Michigan analyzing 36.5% iron was used. A 600-g (1.3-1b) sample was ground in a laboratory rod mill together with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of sodium silicate to -150 µm (-100 mesh). This was transferred to a Fagergren laboratory flotation cell, and deslimed four times at 20 µm (quartz equivalent). The deslimed pulp was transferred to a laboratory conditioner, diluted to 40% solids, and conditioned with 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of soda ash and 250 g/t (0.5 lb per st) of oleic acid. The conditioned pulp was then transferred back to the Fagergren cell, floated until barren of froth, and the rougher froth product was returned to the cell and cleaned. The results are presented in Table 1. The cleaner concentrate at this point analyzed 45.3% Fe. The cleaner concentrate coated with fatty acid was transferred to a 2-L (0.53-gal) beaker. While the pulp was agitated with a glass T-stirrer, ozone was bubbled into the agitated pulp for 15 minutes at a rate of 10 mg/min (0.00035 oz per min) ozone (250 g/t or 0.5 lb per st 03 feed). It was observed that the pulp ceased to froth after about 10 minutes. The amine flotation of siliceous gangue from the ozonated pulp was carried out first by conditioning with a dextrin, a commonly used starch depressant for iron oxides. This was followed by flotation with a stage addition of an ether amine at increments of 100 g/t (0.2 lb per st). Three stages were required to float the siliceous gangue to near completion. The three froth products were combined and cleaned twice. When the cationic flotation Rougher, Cleaner 1 and Cleaner 2 cell products were combined, an iron concentrate analyzing 64.5% iron was obtained at an overall iron recovery of 72.8%. Pelletizing Fatty acid flotation concentrates have been pelletized successfully in northern Michigan mills. But at other locations, fatty acid coatings on iron flotation concentrates proved so undesirable in agglomeration that other methods of concentration had to be sought. For example, a sinter mix containing iron ore concentrates upgraded by fatty acid flotation resulted in decreased productivity. This occurred because the micropellets of particles with the hydrophobic coating are less tolerant of moisture. Thus, the bed permeability is lost (Beebe, 1965). The agglomeration of concentrates obtained by the fatty acid flotation alone, and the hydrophobic coatings destroyed by ozonation or by the duplex flotation process, is not expected to cause any difficulty since the surfaces of the concentrates would be hydrophilic. Removal of the fatty acid coating with activated carbon, indicated by the loss of floatability, was shown to restore the decrepitation temperature of wet balls during drying cycle (Iwasaki et al., 1967). Disposal of Cationic Silica Flotation Froths Recent demands of iron blast furnaces place the silica content of the magnetic taconite pellets at about 5%. Conventional process for magnetic taconite involving fine grinding and magnetic separation often produces magnetic concentrates analyzing in excess of 5% silica. This is due to the presence of the middling grains of siliceous gangue and magnetite. Cationic silica flotation of magnetic taconite concentrates (DeVaney, 1949) may be used to reduce the silica content. But the amine coating on siliceous gangue becomes of environmental concern when the flotation tailings are discarded in tailing ponds.

An attempt is made to ascertain the mechanism of tangle and cell formation and its dependence upon dislocation-interstitial carbon interactions. The strain-hardening behavior of single crystals of 3.25 pct Si-Fe was determined at 300° and 425°K and under conditions of both continuous and interrupted tensile strain. Significantly enhanced hardening was observed in crystals deformed at the elevated temperature, and it was further accentuated by interrupted straining. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the resultant dislocation structures. Strain aging was found to aid tangle and cell formation at 425°K, but at both temperatures embryo tangles formed solely from primary glide dislocations, presumably by a process involving cross slip and "mushrooming". IN the course of plastic deformation all bcc metals and alloys develop a dislocation structure characterized by loose-knit groups of tangled dislocations. With increasing strain the tangles become more tightly knit and grow larger; finally a three-dimensional cellular substructure is formed:1 This process has been observed with the transmission electron microscope.&apos;-l7 However, most investigations were confined to the study of nearly pure polycrystalline metals at relatively low temperatures. At intermediate temperatures, 0.17 to 0.14 Tm where T, is the melting temperature in degrees absolute, the mobility of interstitial impurities such as carbon is high enough to permit migration to nearby glide dislocations but is still low enough so that a significant drag force is exerted.18,19 it is also in this temperature range that a hump occurs in the curve of work-hardening rate vs temperature for iron. Analogous plots for tantalum" and columbiumzo show a definite upward trend in the work-hardening rate. Keh and Weissman1 have pointed out that this behavior may be explained solely on the basis of changes in the dislocation configuration: at low temperatures the dislocations tend to be relatively straight and uniformly distributed, but at intermediate temperatures tightly knit tangles and cellular substructure appear. The interference of these tangles with glide dislocations causes the observed increase in the work-hardening rate. This explanation appears reasonable, yet one might ask what factors cause tangle formation to be so favorable at intermediate temperatures. It seens likely that the strong dislocation-interstitial interactions which are known to occur in this temperature range are at least partly responsible," with the magnitude of the effect being proportional to the interstitial concentration. The purpose of the present work is to study the relationship between tangle formation and strain hardening in a bcc metal in the temperature range 0.17 to 0.4 Tm. Particular emphasis was placed upon a study of the effects of interstitial-dislocation interactions. Single crystals of 3.25 pct Si-Fe containing about 200 ppm of C in solid solution were used in the investigation for the following reasons: 1) The mobility of interstitial carbon in 3.25 pct Si-Fe is negligible at 300°K but increases rapidly at slightly elevated temperature22. Hence, differences between the flow curves and dislocation structures of crystals deformed at 300°K, 0.17 T,, and crystals deformed, say, at 425°K, 0.24 Tm, should be appreciable because of the enhanced dislocation-carbon interactions at the elevated temperature. This effect was accentuated in some samples by interrupted straining, thereby introducing a certain amount of aging. 2) Near room temperature, slip in suitably oriented 3.25 pct Si-Fe single crystals is largely confined to the (110) planes.23&apos;24 Dislocation structures formed under conditions of single glide are the least complicated and their method of formation is the most easily discernable. 3) Dislocations in Si-Fe can be tightly locked with carbon atmospheres by a low-temperature aging treatment. The subsequent thinning of samples to foil thicbess causes little or no rearrangement in the dislocation structure.25 EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Large single-crystal sheets of 3.25 pct Si-Fe were donated by Dr. C. G. Dunn of the General Electric Research Laboratory, Schenectady, N. Y. The orientations of the sheets were determined and slabs 1.0 by 0.25 by 0.05 in. were cut such that the desired tensile axis corresponded to the long dimension. The slabs were mechanically polished and subsequently decar-burized by heating at 1000°C for 3 days in a flowing wet-hydrogen atmosphere. A carbon content of about 200 ppm was introduced by heating at 805°C for 25 min in a flowing atmosphere of dry hydrogen containing heptane vapor. Shaped copper tools were then used to spark-machine at 0.125 by 0.50 in. gage length onto each slab. Vacuum annealing at 1225°C for 2 days followed by a quench into the cold end of the furnace to retain carbon in solid solution concluded the soecimen preparation. Continuous tensile flow curves for crystals of severa1 orientations Were obtained both at 300&apos; and 425°K. A strain rate of 6.67 x 10-4 Per set was used in these and all other tests. Crystals oriented for single glide, B and D in Fig. 1, were subjected to a 3.5 pct plastic elongation to insure uniform slip along the gage length; they were then immediately subjected to interrupted strain cycling as indicated in Fig. 2(a). The reverse transformation of bcc martensite to the fcc phase was studied in an Fe-33.95 wl pct Ni alloy by nzeans oj dilatometry, melallography, and electron microscopy. Upon "slozc" heating (-1°C per min) length cJmnge us temperature plots showed u gradual contracLion over the temperature range 200" to 280"C ,followed by a more abrupt contraction beginning a1 -280°C. Howet,ev, zchen the heating rate was increased -4°C per tnin, no gradual contraction was observed and only the abrupt contraction starting at -2BO"C was found. Thus on slower heating- the AS "temperature" for the subject alloy, unlike the MS temperature, is better defined as a range of temperatures. Both optical and transmissiorl electron microscope observations showed that some of the martensite plates exizibited a partial loss of transformation twins during reversal. The midvib region of the martensite plates disappeaved relatively early duirng the reversal. Metallographic observations slowed that the earliest detectable stage of the rezlerse tvansforrvration begins (axd Moues inulardly) at The Martensens i te - parent interface. At higher temperatirres, the. formation of martensitically reversed jcc plates within the bcc martensite plales was observed. It is concluded that the reverse transformation consists of a diffusion less process (martensitic); but this is ps-obably aided by a prior or simultaneous dijjusiorz-comltvolled process, at leasl in the case of slower heat-ing&apos; experiments. ALTHOUGH numerous investigations have dealt with the parent-to-martensite ("forward") transformation (fcc — bcc) in Fe-Ni alloys, comparatively little is reported on the ("reverse7&apos;) martensite-to-parent transformation.&apos;-4 Even though such reverse transformations have been studied in detail in some nonferrous systems, one of the difficulties of studying the reverse transformation in most ferrous mar-tensites is that the martensite decomposes by tempering during heating. However, carbonless Fe-Ni alloys do not exhibit this difficulty since the transformation in these alloys is completely reversible. The present investigation represents an attempt to shed more light on the nature and mechanism of the martensite-to-parent transformation. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE 1.1) Alloy Prepatation. Fe-Ni alloys of compositions near 34 wt pct Ni were prepared from zone-refined iron (99.994 wt pct Fe) and high-purity nickel (99.999 wt pct Ni) by induction melting in recrystallized alumina crucibles in an argon atmosphere, with prior vacuum evacuation to 10"3 mm Hg. The alloys were homogenized by induction stirring in the molten state for 5 min. After solidification, the alloys were further homogenized in evacuated quartz capsules for 96 hr at 1230°C. 1.2) Dilatometry. Slices of the ingot were hot-forged (750°C in air) into approximate rod form and these specimens were then hot-swaged (750°C in air) into long cylindrical rods 0.55 mm diam. From the rods, specimens about 1 in. long were cut. These were then vacuum-annealed for 24 hr at 1200°C, cooled to room temperature, and subsequently transformed to martensite in liquid nitrogen (whereby about 40 pct transformation was obtained). Dilatation measurements were made by observing length changes in a vacuum dilatometer with an externally mounted LVDT sensing element. 1. 3) Preparation of Electron Microscope Specimens. Slices of the ingots were cold-rolled (with intermediate vacuum anneals) to -0.020 in. Out of these rolled sheets, specimens (about 1 by 1 in.) were cut. These were then vacuum-annealed, transformed to martensite by cooling in liquid nitrogen, and subsequently heated from room temperature to various temperatures to effect either partial or complete reverse transformation. These specimens were then chemically polished to 0.002 in. in l:l HsOz (30 pct) and &PO4 (85 pct) solution, and thinned to electron transparency in an electrolyte consisting of 150 g CraOs, 750 ml glacial acetic acid, and 30 ml ~~0.~ Observations were made with a 100-kv Hitachi HU-11 electron microscope equipped with an HK-2A tilting device. 1.4) Optical Microscopy. Metallographic observations were made with a Leitz MM5 metallograph on the same 0.020-in. sheet specimens as were used for electron microscopy and on bulk specimens which were 0.2 in. or more on a side. The chemical thinning solution when cooled below 20°C also served as an etchant for this alloy. Observations of surface relief were made with a Zeiss interference microscope employing a Thallium light source of wavelength 0.54 p. Specimens for interference studies were prepared by two-stage polishing on Buehler vibromet polishers using 0.3 and 0.05 p alumina abrasives. 2) EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS 2.1) Comparison of the MS,AS, and Af Tempera-tures wTth Previous Re sults. The AS aLd Af tempera -tures of several Fe-Ni alloys were determined dila-tometrically. The MS temperatures of the same alloys were determined by continuously lowering the temperature using a mixture of isopentane and liquid nitrogen and observing the highest temperature at which a prepolished specimen showed surface upheavals. For the present the As temperature is defined as the temperature at which an abrupt decrease in length occurs in the dilatation plot. The Mining and Metallurgical Club of the University of Toronto held a very successful meeting at the Engineers&apos; Club on Jan. 29, 1917. Interesting papers on the Arizona Mining Districts and on the Creighton Mine at Sudbury were read. Several members of the freshman class who have changed from other branches of engineering to mining have been taken into the Club, so that we are now booming. We are also making an attempt to have more of our members apply for junior membership in the Institute, and hope to report favorably along these lines in the near future. C. A. Pearson (British Iron and Steel Research Association, London, England)—Dr. Wagner has referred to the work of Richardson and Dancy and Gellner and Richardson on the reduction at 900°C of wustite films on iron. He has assumed that iron ions and electrons migrate backwards to the iron-wustite interface and that the reduced iron grows on the metal substrate. This would be a possible explanation of the results of these workers were it not for the fact that, as stated by Gellner and Richardson but not stressed, this growth in the center of the specimen can occur even
