THOSE interested in the early developments and experiments, both in the United States and abroad, that led to modern rock dusting, will find an excellent summary in a paper by George S. Rice,13 published in 1914. The period from 1914 to 1924 was one of intensive experiment on coal-dust explosions in the United States; abroad, war activities and rehabilitation stopped this work over a large part of that decade. Amer-ican findings were published by the Bureau of Mines, particularly in Bulletins 167 and 268. It is convenient to consider that in the United States rock dusting to prevent coal-dust explosions in mines was initiated in 1924 with the publication of tentative specifications.17 This was followed in 1925 by an investigation of methods and costs12 and approval by the American Engineering Standards Committee of a Recommended American Prac-tice.18 Approximately 13 years have elapsed since this approval, and inasmuch as changes in rock-dusting practice in the United States have been evolutionary, it is necessary to consider this entire period as "recent" in some phases of the work. There have been no official changes in the Recommended American Practice since its approval. This paper reviews as briefly as possible knowledge acquired since the issue of the earlier papers mentioned, through experience in mines and experiments conducted by different organizations engaged in the pro-motion of mine safety.

Excluding top-slicing and sublevel caving, large production caving methods may be divided into two general classes, the branch raise, or undercut caving method, and the combined shrinkage and caving method, each of which has a number of variations, the result of continual efforts towards obtaining lower costs and better extraction, by the introduction and substitution of minor improvements and modifications. Early Caving Methods Present caving methods are the cumulative result of developments covering a period of many years, with the most rapid growth during the past 15 years. They originated, presumably, from early English stoping methods, and, as far as is generally known, were first introduced in the Michigan iron district. They have had their greatest expansion and application in the large low-grade porphyry coppers. In their present form, they are probably a development and combination of sublevel caving and shrinkage (back stoping on ore) with gravity handling of broken material. Sublevel caving, as practiced in the Michigan district today, is a combination of drift, or crosscut, mining, with top-slicing, and caving, supplemented by later refinements in the shape of mechanized handling of broken ore. A height of anywhere from 16 to 20 ft. is generally taken, and the ore is drilled and blasted along the drift or crosscut for half this height (say 8 to 10 ft.), after which the upper 8 to 10 ft. caves and breaks of its own weight, with comparatively little assistance from drilling. GENERAL Broken Hill lies at latitude 31º58'S longitude 141º27'E on the semi-arid western plains of New South Wales. From discovery in 1883 until the end of 1969 the lead-silver-zinc orebody has yielded 107,570,000 tons of ore for an overall grade of 13.1% Pb, 6.9 oz Ag/ton and 9.4% Zn.* The orebody currently supports the activities of four mines which are, from north to south, North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. It is estimated that in 1969 these mines produced about 8 ½ % of world lead production and about 6% of world zinc production. In 1905 The Zinc Corporation, Limited was founded to recover zinc from tailings dumps and moved into mining in 1911 on leases purchased from Broken Hill South Limited at the then southern extremity of the "line of lode". New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited was formed in 1936 to explore and mine for deep ore in the leases to the south of The Zinc Corporation which were purchased from Barrier South Limited. The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines are both managed by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Limited, which wholly owns The Zinc Corporation, Limited and has a 32% interest in New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. * Throughout this paper tons referred to are long tons of 2,240 lbs.

Water-propelled banks of carbon dioxide recovered both high- and low-viscosity crude oil substantially in excess of that recovered by water flood in linear flow model experiments. The increase in oil recovery is explained by oil swelling and viscosity reduction. Additional oil was recovered by solution gas drive at the end of the carbon dioxide floods when the model systems were depres-sured. This study was an investigation of the use of a water-driven carbon dioxide bank to recover crude oil. Techniques involving the injection of carbon dioxide have aroused con-siderable interest in recent years among methods considered for increasing oil recoveries. A number of investigators have studied the process in the laboratory1-' and in the field.7,5 Laboratory studies referenced indicate that carbon dioxide in conjunction with water flooding recovers more oil than does water flooding alone. These re- ports diverge widely, however, in stating magnitude of improvement. We believed that a water-driven carbon dioxide bank would increase recovery of crude oils by two mechanisms: viscosity reduction and oil swelling. Due to reduction in the oil viscosity caused by solution of carbon dioxide, displacement efficiency should be improved. In addition, the residual oil should be highly swollen by the carbon dioxide held in solution. Thus, the final residual oil saturation, in terms of stock-tank oil, would be lower than in the absence of carbon dioxide. To test this hypothesis, experi-

The Pima mine, Pima County, Ariz., a 53,500-tpd copper mine, is located 17 miles south of Tucson, Ariz. The mine is in a sequence of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments striking east-north-east and dipping southeasterly. These sediments are intruded by a Tertiary quartz monzonite porphyry. The Paleozoic Permian (?) dolomites, limestones, and sandstones have been altered to calc-silicate skarn, marble, and quartzite. The overlying Mesozoic Triassic (?) clastic sediments have undergone some recrystallization and hydrothermal alteration. The clastic metasediments are divided into three distinct lithologic units: lithic arenite, arkose, and interbedded and overlying black argillite. Three types of hydrothermal alteration in the clastic rocks are propylitic alteration (epidote, chlorite, and quartz, with or without sericite), quartz-sericite alteration, and potassic alteration (K-feldspar, quartz, and sericite, with or without chlorite and calcite). The porphyry has undergone potassic alteration. Dominant structures are an east-west postmineral fault in the western part of the pit, and strong low angle faulting and shearing which truncates the ore body at depth. The two joint sets, one parallel to bedding and the other at right angles to bedding are prominent in the mine. Faulting is in two dominant directions, one striking northwest, dipping northeast, and the other striking northeast, dipping northwest. Economic mineralization is prediminantly disseminated pyrite and chalcopyrite, and molybdenite-quartz veinlets. There are less important amounts of magnetite, hematite, sphalerite, galena, tennantite, and bornite. Mineralization is believed to be both structurally and chemically controlled.

THE problem of surface support in coal mining is naturally divided into three branches: 1. Surface covered with improvements of such value as compared with the value of the underlying coal, or with such elements of danger to mining, that absolute support is essential. 2. Surface with improvements of less value than the underlying coal such that moderate settlement may be permitted, but destructive settlement must be avoided, either by reason of danger to human life or unwarranted property damage. 3. Surface of relatively small value as compared with the underlying coal where destructive settlement may be permitted. First Problem In the first case it is evident that the original support must be maintained either (a) by leaving ample pillars and confining the coal recovery to a very conservative first mining, (b) by so supporting less conservative first mining by filling or flushing that the gradual deterioration of the pillars may be prevented and subsidence avoided, or (c) by incompressible support as masonry either as an adjunct to insufficient pillars or in place of the original coal support. a. From tests made by the Scranton Engineers Club, it appears safe to figure on 2000 lb. per sq. in. as the safe squeezing strength of coal pillars in place, provided that these are, as usual, not higher than their least horizontal dimension; and from this figure the percentage of pillar to be left for various depths may be easily calculated. INTRODUCTION Where and how to spend the exploration dollar to net the greatest economic return, has always been a major problem for mining companies. Minerals are being consumed in ever increasing quantitie: throughout the world and the mining industry is being called on to meet this demand. In view of the present world-wide nationalistic trend, it is becoming more difficult to determine where exploration money can be spent most profitably. An exploration project should be evaluated continually--in the beginning, to define economic targets and later to determine, as early as possible, whether a project has a chance of developing into a venture that will make a profit acceptable to top management. At this point, a decision can be made whether or not to proceed with plans to bring in a new mine. Exploration, evaluation, and development, therefore, must be fully integrated in transforming an exploration project into a profitable mining venture. DEMAND FOR LEAD AND ZINC Lead and zinc are metals basic to our economy and the demand for them will continue to rise as the population in the world increases. If the population continues to grow at the present rate, it will about double by the year 2000. The accelerating demand for these metals is shown by statistics. Nearly half as much lead (48%) and more than half as much zinc (55%) have been mined between the two world wars as in all pre- ceding history. (1)

Intergranular corrosion in corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel steels has been widely discussed in the last few years. So far as the author knows, nothing has been published which definitely shows that this tendency can be eliminated, although suggestions have been made that a remedy is possible if certain specifications are satisfied. Strauss, Schottky and Hinnüberl suggested an increase in chromium content to an extent that would prevent the impoverishment of chromium on carbide precipitation sufficient to cause impaired corrosion resistance in the matrix. Pilling2 suggested an increase in nickel, so that the stability of the austenite matrix would be increased. Aborn and Bain3 say that "intergranular attack—may be eliminated by preventing carbide precipitation (e. g., by lowering the carbon content or somehow raising its solubility) or by precipitating it permanently under conditions which will not remove chromium from solid solution so drastically at any points." In a later paper Aborn and Bain4 state that many different metallic elements, tungsten, vanadium, copper, aluminum, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium, have been added in small percentages to increase the stability of these alloys, but that it has been reported that according to the copper sulfate test these added elements act only to retard the intergranular corrosion. and that increased nickel and chromium contents have similar effects. Newell5 showed that the lower the quenching temperature before reheating, the less severe was the intergranular attack.

(New York Meeting, October, 1913.) THE investigation herein described was carried out for the purpose of studying, both by chemical and metal-lographical means, the extent of over-oxidation of steel that can be accomplished by excessive over-blowing in a Bessemer converter. In addition there are appended some results of basic. open hearth and crucible steels. Remarks on Chemical Methods. The test block used was hemispherical in shape, 4.5 in, in diameter and 2 in. thick. Drillings for analysis were obtained by drilling through the entire solid part of the. block, carefully avoiding all cracks anti blow-holes and mixing these drillings thoroughly. Drillings were carefully examined for scale and the finest were gone over with a microscope to be sure all scale from whatever source had been. removed. Oxygen was determined by the well-known method of Ledebur, modified according to Cushman,1 with, however, the removal of the preheating tube, which was found unnecessary. This method has been found to give concordant results. Blanks run from 0.0003 to 0.0006 g. Duplicate determinations varied not more than 0.001 to 0.003 per cent. It seems to be generally supposed that the hydrogen method gives only that oxygen which is combined with iron. Whether this be true or not, the content of oxygen existing as iron oxide no doubt predominates sufficiently, so that the result obtained is sufficient to indicate whether the steel is over-oxidized or not.

The absence of a convenient glossary- of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copy, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. For mining and exploration, and indeed the entire mineral industry, the first century of AIME has ended with far more problems than it began. Paradoxically, most of these problems have arisen not because, the industry has been unsuccessful, but rather because it has succeeded too well. Whatever the public demand for minerals over the past 100 years, it has somehow been met-and met at a price well within the public's ability to pay for the products. But as AIME moves into its second century, the past successes of mining and exploration are beginning to levy a tax on the future. Prospectors have already found most of the rich and ready ores, and miners have dug them out. New mineral assets grow progressively harder to come by, and as they do, the need for them grows inversely more pressing. How and where and at what cost can adequate supplies be found? How and at what cost can they be mined from heretofore inaccessible recesses deep underground and under the seas-or from vast surface tonnages containing only minor values? And once they are found or won, how can these assets be husbanded for generations to come? How also can they be extracted without injury to the land, air and water on which we and our successors must depend? And what constructive use can be made of the incidental materials now treated merely as wastes-sometimes at great expense?

SOMETIMES the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers appears to be a strictly technical society, and if so my paper should deal with the technical operations of finding and producing gold. But I have not been engaged in practical gold mining since 1910. What I have been doing mainly for the last 25 years is to try to figure out what the income of a mine-gold, or any other-would be worth to an investor. So I have been in contact with gold mining, in one way or another, for some 42 years. I say that with a purpose. In that time the industry has been through one of its cycles. The value of gold mines is very dif¬ferent at different points in one of these cycles. For this reason the cycle of gold mining is a highly practical study. The cycle of gold is a more or less rhythmical change in its value or purchasing power measured in the grand average of other commodities, which is the same thing as its price. Taking the price of gold in 1897 as a stand¬ard, a dollar at that time declined to 55c. in 1913, to 26.8c. in 1920, and since then it has risen to 47.4c. in 1930 and to about 64c. in 1932. It is worth about 21/ times as much now as it was in 1920, but less than two¬thirds as much as in 1897. When this change is applied to the value of a gold mine still greater differences are evident. The cost of producing gold is of course measured in labor and other commodities, and as that cost goes down the margin of profit measured in the gold itself increases. Thus a mine which might make only 10 per cent profit in 1920 on its gross output may easily make 25 per cent now. The stockholder gets 2 ½ times more gold that is worth 2 1/2 times as much in purchasing power, therefore the real value of his holding has risen by the one factor multiplied by the other, giving him 61/4 times as much goods or services as he had in 1920.

Introduction In the U.S., about one-quarter of the fuel oil and natural gas consumption is associated with power production in utility and industrial boilers and process heat needs in industrial furnaces. Coal has been an attractive candidate for replacing these premium fuels because of its low cost, but there are penalties associated with the solid fuel form. In many cases pulverized coal in unacceptable as a premium fuel replacement because of the extensive cost of retrofitting an existing boiler designed to burn oil or gas. In the cases of synthetic fuels from coal, research and development still have a long way to go and costs are very high. Another option, which appears very attractive, is the use of solid coal in a liquid fuel form - coal slurry fuels. Occidental Research Corp. has been developing coal slurry fuels in conjunction with Island Creek Coal (ICC), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Both coal-oil mixtures and coalwater mixtures are under development. ICC is a large eastern coal producer, engaged in the production and marketing of bituminous coal, both utility steam and high quality metallurgical coals. There are a number of incentives for potential users of coal slurry fuels and in particular for coal-water mixtures (CWMs). First, CWM represents an assured supply of fuel at a price predictable into future years. Second, CWM is available in the near term; there are no substantial advances in technology needed to provide coal slurry fuels commercially. Third, there is minimal new equipment required to accommodate CWM in the end-user's facility. Fourth, CWM is nearly as convenient to handle, store, and combust as is fuel oil. Several variants of CWM technology could be developed for different end-users in the future. One concept is to formulate slurry at the mine mouth in association with an integrated beneficiation process. This slurry fuel may be delivered to the end-user by any number of known conveyances such as barge, tank truck, and rail. Slurry fuel would then be stored on-site and used on demand in utility boilers, industrial boilers, and potentially for process heat needs or residential and commercial heating. An alternative approach is to formulate a low viscosity pre-slurry at the mine mouth and to pipeline it for a considerable distance, finishing up slurry formulation near the end-user's plant. Finally, at the other extreme of manufacturing alternatives, washed coal would be shipped to a CWM manufacturing plant just outside the end-user's gate. Depending on fuel specifications and locations of the mine and end-user facility, any of these alternatives may make economic sense. They are all achievable in the near term using existing technology or variants thereof. The Coal-Water Mixture CWMs contain a nominal 70 wt. % coal ground somewhat finer than the standard pulverized ("utility grind") coal grind suspended in water; a complex chemical additive system gives the desired CWM properties, making the suspension pumpable and preventing sedimentation and hardening over time. Figure 1 shows the difference between a sample of pulverized coal containing 30 wt. % moisture and a CWM of identical coal/water ratio. The coal sample behaves like sticky coal, while the CWM flows readily. The combustion energy of a CWM is 96-97% of that associated with the coal present, due to the penalty for vaporizing water in the CWM. Potentially any coal can be incorporated in the CWM, depending on the combustion performance required and the allowable cost. CWMs are usually formulated using high quality steam coals containing around 6% ash, 34% volatile matter, 0.8% sulfur, 1500°C (2730°F) initial deformation temperatures, and energy content of 25 GJ/t (21.5 million Btu per st). Additional beneficiation to the 3% ash level can be accomplished in an integrated process. There are a number of minimum requirements which a satisfactory CWM must meet: pumpability, stability, combustibility, and affordability. In addition, a CWM should be: resistant to extended shear, generally applicable to a wide variety of coals, forgiving/flexible, and compatible with the least expensive processing. It was found that a complex chemical additive package and control of particle size distribution are necessary to achieve these attributes simultaneously, while maximizing coal content in the slurry fuel. Formulation of Coal-Water Mixtures A major consideration in the manufacture, transportation, and utilization of a slurry fuel is its pumpability, or effective viscosity. Most CWM formulations are nonNewtonian, i.e., viscosity depends on the rate and/or duration of shear applied. Viscosities reported in this paper were obtained using a Brookfield viscometer fitted with a T-spindel and rotated at 30 rev/min, thus they are apparent viscosities measured at a shear rate of approximately 10 sec-1. The instrument does reproducibly generate a shear field if spindle size and rotation rate are held fixed. By observing the apparent viscosities of several slurries at fixed conditions it is possible to obtain a relative measure of their viscosities for comparison purposes. A true shear stress-shear rate relationship at the shear rates at which the CWM will be subjected in industry may be obtained using the Haake type and a capillary viscometer. These viscometers are used for specific applications. However, for comparison purposes, apparent viscosities are reported.

DURING an investigation of solid-solution hardening of nickel by carbon,' we found that there were no reliable data on the dilating effect of dissolved carbon on the unit cell of nickel. Bernier2 reported an increase in lattice parameter of nickel (3.523A) when an unknown amount of carbon was introduced into solid solution (3.536A). Similarly KG, Tsien, and Misek3 found an increase from 3.523 to 3.531A when nickel was carburized. strong4 studied the variation of nickel lattice constant as a function of dissolved carbon. However, in his case carbon was introduced into nickel by solidifying the melt at 65 kbar. Therefore, his carbon concentrations were much above the highest equilibrium solubility limit5 (2.7 at. pct C at 1 atm). Knowledge of the lattice mismatch between solute and solvent is essential in understanding the mechanism of solid-solution hardening. Therefore, we decided to determine the dilation of the nickel lattice by carbon under the more usual conditions of atmospheric pressure. The material used was Inco Electrolytic Nickel of 99.95 pct purity, as specified by the supplier. The impurity contents in wt pct were: Fe, 0.01; Cu, 0.01; Co, 0.03; 0, 0.005; C, Si, S, N, trace. To this base material various amounts of AUC-grade high-purity carbon were added during vacuum induction casting. Ingots, 2 in. in diam, were heated in a muffle furnace at 1000°C for i hr., hot-rolled to 1/2-in. thickness, and quenched into brine. All ingots with carbon concentration greater than 0.98 at. pct were enclosed in a cast iron box during the heating to minimize decar-burization. Small pieces were then either swaged down to 0.028-in.-diam wire or cold-rolled to 0.010-in.-thick sheets. After the final cold reduction in area of 50 pct, the specimens were recrystallized by heating in evacuated capsules at 1100°C for 60 to 80 sec and then quenched into brine. INTRODUCTION In the intensive analysis of core samples from oil raservoirs, there is a recognized need for pore sizc distribution data. Such data, if collected with adequate precision and in sufficient quantity, should contribute to a better interpretation of fluid flow phenomena than is now possible from a knowledge of permeability and porosity data alone. It is hoped, for instance, that pore size distribution data may eventually provide a useful aid for predicting whether a water flood, or other secondary recovery methods. will he successful in a given reservoir.' Apparatus tor measurlng pore size distribution by mercury injection at pressures ranging from 0 to 2,000 psi have been described in the literature.2,3,4 All of these apparatus are somewhat complex and fairly expensive. Furthermore, the callbration of some of the apparatus is not always easy. Great difficulty, for instance, was experienced in obtaining reproducible pressure-volume correction data for the mercury pump shown in one of the references. An apparatus was therefore developed which was less complicated and less expensive than those of previously described designs. This apparatus is, in some respects, an improved version of a previously described low pressure apparatus' (maximum pressure 150 psi) which did not cmploy a mercury pump but instead used a precision bore glass tube for measuring the injected volumes. Tests were performed with the apparatus from vacuum to 2,000 psi and it was observed that the apparatus furnished reproducible pressure-volume correction data. In addition. it was noted that the maximum correction was small. precision of measurement was high. and operation of the entirc apparatus was relatively easy. Although the apparatus was designed exclusively for samples of 1 in. diameter and 1 in, length or smaller, it could be modified without much difficulty for larger samples, if desired. P. R. Kalischer.*—I should like to amplify a little one of the points made by Dr. Hensel, and rather violently disagree with him at the same time. He brought out the point that when the higher forming pressures are used on the green compacts there is a marked decrease in the density as sintered. We found that to be true and, of course, many of you notice that that is true with copper compacts also. But, in my opinion at least, it is not true that the expansion is due to entrapped air. We have vacuum-pressed both silver and copper compacts and obtained almost exactly the same numerical expansion as we secured by pressing in air. The powder, however, that is vacuum-annealed does show a slight decrease in expansion on sintering, but almost the entire increase on expansion can be overcome by very slow rates of heating. And it is our opinion that a majority of the expansion is due to dissolved oxygen in the discrete metal particles themselves rather than to entrapped gases. Another interesting observation that we have made is that often with silver or copper compacts it is desirable to silver solder or braze the compact into some part of a piece of equipment after completing powder metallurgical operations on it. If such a compact is sintered and coined, say a silver compact, given an initial forming pressure of 10 to 15 tons per square inch, and sintered, there is an adequate amount of shrinkage and it can be coined at about 50 or 60 tons per square inch and bring up the density nearly to theoretical. If, then, that compact is silver-soldered into some part of a fixture or a machine, it will expand very beautifully, and the only way that this can be overcome. as far as we know, has been to reanneal after the coining operation at a temperature higher than is to be used in any subsequent operation. In that way, a density very nearly theoretical can be achieved, but the coining operation cannot be carried to the excessively high pressures or expansion and bubbling of the compact will occur again.

IT has been suggested by a number of people that it would be worth while for some one to attempt to summarize or condense the proceedings of this symposium. This task has fallen to me as organizer and co-chairman. Its difficulty will be appreciated by anyone who attempts to read the whole proceedings. It is therefore with trepidation that I offer the following digest. In recent years there has been a renewal of interest in America on this subject of the cohesive strength of materials, and a growing appreciation of the need for a better theory of cohesion failure. The theories of elastic action and plastic action are well developed, particularly the former. The theory of plastic action is still in the course of development, but it is well along. Plastic action is terminated by cohesion failure and what is needed is a theory that will tell us when to expect the cohesion failure. In the past it has generally been assumed that cohesion failure will occur when a critical value of the maximum tensile stress has been reached. Many experiments have shown that this is not strictly true, and this symposium concerns itself with the failures of this simple hypothesis, and with the efforts that have been made to devise a more satisfactory theory. The most active contributor in recent years to knowledge in this field is Dr. McAdam, and he was asked to open the symposium with a summary or condensation of his papers and views. Undoubtedly it is presumptuous to attempt a still greater condensation, but perhaps it will be useful, because even his contribution to this symposium contains no summary, no concise statement of just what his contribution has bees. Dr. McAdam makes two main points. The first is that the cohesive strength is not a single valued quantity, but that it is a function of all three principal stresses and hence must be represented diagrammatically by a surface in a three-dimensional figure.
