Wrought iron and steel have been prepared from limonite, hematite, and magnetite ores by gaseous reduction, compacting and squeezing the resulting product at high temperature and finally melting the wrought iron so formed. The structure, analyses, mechanical and magnetic properties of the products are given. It is found that the structure of iron ores is best studied by subjecting them to gaseous reduction and using metallographic technique on the resulting sponge iron. In this way the cell structure of iron ore is clearly shown. The wrought iron made by heating compacted sponge iron to 1450" C., and forging, shows a cell structure inherited from the ore. This cell structure is further preserved in melting and casting the wrought iron. The probable relation of the properties of the materials to this inherited cell structure is discussed.

Although present electrolytic zinc manufacturing processes are aimed at the direct wet process recovery of the metal, and, with this end in view, several industrial scale patents have been applied for during the last few years, the object of this paper is to enhance the possible metallurgical interest in the conventional recovery of zinc and other metals from leaching residues. Therefore, its main end is the description and discussion of the recovery process of zinc, lead and cadmium from leaching residues. Fundamentally, the process consists of the following: Flotation processing to recover the non-roasted blende still contained in the residues. Pyrometallurgical processing of flotation tails in low-shaft furnaces (kilns) and open-flame rotating furnaces and the ensuing recovery of zinc, lead and cadmium as a mixture of their oxides through volatilization.

The experimental work reported herein firas inspired by the publication of a paper by Grange and stewart, in which it was suggested that at low chromium contents the effect of this element on the Ma point was greater than at higher chromium contents, It was argued that, if a small increase of chromium in solution in austenite caused a sharp lowering of the M, point, it might lead to an explanation of occasional unsolved stress cracking of SAE 52100 during heat treatment. Commercial hardening is carried out at temperatures of incomplete solution, leaving carbides available to enrich the austenite during any inadvertent increase in temperature, such enrichment of the austenite in chromium content would lower the M, point nearer room temperature where cracking is more likely to occur. According, it was decided to investigate the effect of chromium, in quantities between o and 2 pet, on the M, point of commercial steels. Fig I summarizes the data available on chromium steels. For purposes of comparison, the M, temperature values were corrected by means of the Grange and Stewart formulas to (I) Hypoeutectoid compositions: 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese (z) Hsereutectoid compos-sition': 1." pet carbon and O.35 pct manganese. Only the steels having compositions reasonably close to these corrected values were included, because large adjustments inevitably introduce increased error such as are experienced in using the formula. The straight lines of Fig I were drawn by the authors. These data obviously do not settle the question Of the effect Of chromium On the Md Oint, particularly at low chromium contents. While it is fairly well established that chromium causes the M, to be lowered when present in quantities of I pet Or more, Grange and Stewart1 have suggested that in small amounts (less than 1 pet) it is more effective in lowering the Ma point, while Klier and Troiano2 have suggested that in small amounts it is less effective in lowering the Ma point. Payson and Savage3 concur with Klier and Troiano and further suggest that the effect is not linear at these concentrations. Rose and Fischer4 report that small amounts of chromium actually raise the Ma point of a 0.20 carbon steel. Material Two series of 35 Ib induction heats were melted for this work, the analyses of which are given in Table I. One series was aimed at 0.50 pct carbon and 0.80 pct manganese with chromium additions in 0,25 pet increments from o to 1.5 pct with a single heat at 2.0 pct Cr. This series was considered necessary because the commercial heat treatment of SAE 52100 does not generally introduce more than about 0.60 pct carbon in solution in the austenite. The high

PALLADIUM has been used for jewelry for many years, particularly in conjunction with gold. This use increased in amount during the war, as palladium and gold were only moderately used for war purposes while demands for platinum and some of the other members of the platinum group were so great that their use in jewelry was prohibited. Palladium hardened with a small percentage of ruthenium has the necessary technical properties and appearance for good jewelry, and it is sufficiently rare to be desirable for luxury items-at least 100 times as rare as gold. Although both visual and spectrophotometric examination demonstrated that the color of palladium was almost the same as that of platinum, a few jewelers found the surface of palladium, even after some polishing, rather dark in areas that had been repeatedly heated during the soldering necessary to assemble certain types of handmade ornaments. This phenomenon is not to be confused with the thin, bluish oxide film that can be produced by heating in air over the range 400° to 800°C., as that film is easily reduced by dipping in warm 5 per cent formic acid or in warm methanol. It was suspected that the difficulty arose from heating in atmospheres that were alternately oxidizing and reducing, as Wise and Vines1 had found that this opened the grain boundaries of palladium and palladium-silver alloys in the same manner as in pure silver, as reported by Martin and Parker.2 This damage is caused by the reaction between oxygen in solid solution in the metal, acquired when heated under oxidizing conditions, and hydrogen diffusing in from subsequent heating under reducing conditions; the steam cannot diffuse out and therefore builds up sufficient pressure to disrupt the metal near the surface. Copper and various other metals can be damaged similarly, but platinum is nearly immune; therefore the problem was new to the platinum jeweler. Sulphur in the fuel gas also can cause trouble but did not appear to be dominant in the present instance. Metallographic examination of both pure palladium and ruthenium-palladium showed that the usual torch using oxygen and city gas as normally operated did in fact cause the surface and subsurface damage that had been observed, and also disclosed that a reducing flame caused more damage than an oxidizing flame and was very damaging even in the absence of any intentional swing in atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing (Fig. 7); besides the surface damage, there was serious loss of ductility. A full explanation of the mechanism of attack is not evident at the moment, but may be allied to the attack that occurs on heating catalytically active metals in nonequilibrium atmospheres.

Equilibrium H2S/4 ratios were determined as functions of temperatunz and composition in a hydrogen recirculation apparatus. A high-temperature solid solution exists in the range two-phase regionfrom TiS 1.96, to TiS1.30, Various thermodynamic quantities were calculated from the data. COMPOUNDS in the titanium -sulfur system have not receiyed much attention in the past, probably because they do not occur naturally in the earth's crust. However, titanium-sulfur compounds have been used in various metallurgical processes. The U.S. Bureau of klines' studied the formation of ti- tanium-sulfide mattes from charges composed of rutile, pyrite, and carbon, with the resulting sulfide matte being chlorinated to form titanium tetrachlo-ride. Fishel, Roe, and Ellis' investigated the de-sulfurizing action of titanium in steels, and Schwarz and Koster studied the preparation of metallic titanium from the sulfide using aluminum and magnesium reduction. The thermodynamic properties of some of the compounds present in the titanium-sulfur system may prove to be of some use in the consideration of future processes using these sulfides, and would

The subject of the supply and the quality of the iron-ore and coke of this State has suffered exaggeration and misrepresentation in both directions. Unsophisticated persons have made extraordinary reports of quality and richness, which could not be supported by facts; while, on the other hand, experts have selected inferior samples, and upon the average of these, which was not by any means the average known to our practice, have based comparisons favorable to other States. Our furnace-records give much better testimony as to the run of our ores, the calorific duty of our coke, and the burden and blast which it will bear. Some of them show poorer ore-mixtures than others; but it is safe to say that the Birmingham furnaces produce from 40 to 60 per cent.. of iron from a mixture of equal parts of the leanest and the richest ores, as classified in large quantities. And certain performances on record here, while they do not represent the regular or average practice, ma: be fairly urged as proof of excellence of raw material, since they would otherwise have been impossible, even as exceptional achievements. Thus oue of our furnaces has made iron with 2500 pounds of coke to the ton of 2300 pounds (Mr. Stratton, 1888); another, with a ton of coke to the ton of iron (Mr. Gordon, 1888); another, with 1.27 ton of coke to the ton (2300 pounds) of iron, the product in the last case being from

The effect of pressure on the extension of the ? loop in the FeSi system has been determined by means of metallogvaphic studies and hardness measurements performed on a series of high-purity Fe-Si alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 at. pct Si, respectively. These mensurements, performed at 42 kbar and temperatures up to 1200oC, indicate that the ? loop is expanded to about 10 at. pct Si at 42 kbar as opposed to a maximum extension of 4 at. pct Si at 1 atm. Comparison of the experimental results with thermodynamic predictions of the pressure shifts yields satisfnctory results. DURING the past few years, several studies have been performed in our laboratory1-' in order to determine the effect of high pressure on phase equilibrium in pure iron and iron-base alloys. The purpose of these studies has been to elucidate the effects of high pressure experimentally and to compare the observed results with predicted pressure effects derived on the basis of known thermody-namic and volumetric data at 1 atm. These studies have included work on pure iron2,5,7 as well as Fe-Ni,1,5 Fe-cr,l,5 and Fe-c4-6 alloys. In addition, Tanner and Kulin3 have reported results of pressure studies on two Fe-Si alloys containing 2.0 and 6.25 at. pct Si. At the time of this latter study, no detailed information was available concerning the difference in volume between the a (bcc) and ? (fcc) phases in the Fe-Si system as a function of silicon content. In order to compare their observations with calculated pressure shifts, Tanner and Kulin were forced to assume that silicon had no effect on the difference in volume between a and ? iron. The resulting discrepancy between their calculation of the a/? phase boundary at 42 kbar and the observed results led them to the conclusion that silicon additions probably decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. Recently: Cockett and Davis8,9 have reported de- tailed studies of the lattice parameters of a series of Fe-Si alloys at temperatures ranging from 20" to 1150°C. These measurements, performed on alloys in the bcc and fcc range, show that silicon does indeed decrease the difference in volume between a and ? iron. By correcting the calculations of Tanner and Kulin in line with the observed effect of silicon they were able to show improved agreement between computed and observed pressure shifts.' The present measurements were undertaken to provide additional corroboration of this effect, by extending the range of composition, in addition to exploring a situation where large extensions of a ? loop could result in impingement of the ? field with an ordered bcc phase (based on Feo.75Sio.25). I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS The alloys investigated were obtained from Dr. F. Kayser of M.I.T. They were prepared at the Ford Scientific Laboratory by vacuum melting electrolytic iron and high-purity silicon. The melts were poured under an argon atmosphere into hot-topped steel molds. Subsequently the ingots were hot-worked down to 1/2-in.-diam rods. Three alloys containing 7.5, 11.0, and 13.9 pct Si were studied. Carbon, regarded as the principal impurity, analyzed at, or below, 0.001 wt pct for all of the alloys. Prior to pressure-temperature treatment, the rod was annealed for 24 hr in vacuum at 1000°C, water-quenched, and subsequently machined into 0.100-in.-diam by 0.100-in.-long specimens. Subsequent to machining, the specimens were again annealed and then examined metallographically. They were found to exhibit a clear coarse-grained ferrite similar to Figs. 10 and 110 of Ref. 1 and Fig. 2 of Ref. 3. Subsequently, specimens of each alloy were equilibrated at 42 kbar at various temperatures in supported piston apparatus.1,3,4,6 Three specimens, one of each alloy, were wrapped in platinum and exposed simultaneously. The pressure-temperature cycle consisted of increasing the pressure from ambient to 42 kbar at 25oC, heating rapidly to the desired temperature, holding for 15 min, and quenching to 100°C, followed by slower cooling to 25°C and pressure release. Polycrystalline tensile specimens of various Zr-0-H alloys have been tested at 298°, 178°, and 77°K. Solute oxygen and hydride precipitates in quenched alloys made individual contributions to the yield strength at 0.2 pct strain which combined to produce a resultant strength increment, a,., Ductility changes which were ohserved can he interpreted in terms of the various oxygen and hydrogen concentrations, testing tem -peratures, and dispositions of the hydride. ADDITIONS of oxygen in solid solution were known to increase the yield and tensile strengths of polycrystalline zirconium as early as 1951.' More recently, the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) for prism slip in zirconium single crystals was also shown to be affected by the solute oxygen impurity.' This latter work also demonstrated that large increments of strength could be contributed by the finely dispersed zirconium hydride precipitates that are present in quenched Zr-H alloys.3 It was concluded that the combined strengthening due to alloying could be expressed by where to is the increase in the CRSS due to solute oxygen alone and TH is the increase due to finely dispersed hydride precipitates. Eq. [I] is analogous to one used to express the combined strengthening effects of work hardening and neutron radiation damage.4 Eq. [1] was verified only indirectly and for only small amounts of the impurities—up to 0.14 at. pct 0 and 0.63 at. pct H. The present investigation was undertaken to obtain a more direct verification of the validity of the form of Eq. [1] for this system and also to determine the combined effects of oxygen and finely dispersed hydride precipitates on the tensile strength and ductility of polycrystalline zirconium. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Tensile specimens were machined from the same rolled billet of Kroll zirconium used in the earlier study.' These measured 38 by 4.7 by 0.5 mm and had 10-mm gage lengths which were 2.8 by 0.5 mm. Each specimen was ß-annealed in vacuo at 1173°K for 15.5 hr and a-annealed at 1073°K for 4 hr to D. G. IMD______________ give an equiaxed structure with grain diameters averaging 0.06 mm. Oxygen was added by allowing the metal to react with a known quantity of oxygen during the 0 anneal and known quantities of hydrogen were added during the a anneal. Each alloy was encapsulated in Pyrex under vacuum, annealed at 873°K for 4 hr, quenched into ice water, and polished by immersion in a solution of 46.75 vol pct H2O, 46.75 vol pct concentrated HNO3, and 6.5 vol pct HF (49 pct) at 298°K. Special heat treatments given to a few specimens are described in the results below. Tensile tests were done on an Instron machine and were begun within 20 min after the quench, except where specified otherwise. Tests at 298°K were in air, at 178°K in acetone, and at 77°K in liquid nitrogen. All tests were at a strain rate of 8x sec-1. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Yield Stress at 298°K. The compositions of alloys and the corresponding yield stresses (0.2 pct strain) are given in Table I. A plot of the yield stresses of the oxygen alloys, A, B, C, and D, indicates that varies linearly with CO1/2, where Co is the oxygen concentration, Fig. 1. This is in accord with Fleischer's6 theory for solution strengthening if the oxygen atoms do not cluster, or the cluster size remains constant with increasing oxygen concentration. In Fig. 1, it appears that if one could prepare some oxygen-free zirconium its yield stress would be very low. Therefore, we shall assume that for the oxygen alloys is equivalent to O0, the strength increment contributed by the presence of oxygen. The relationship between0.2and Co is expressed by 0.2 = 31.3 CO1/2, when the yield stress is in kg per sq mm and the concentration is in at. pct. Each of the hydrogen alloys, Al, A2, A3, and A4, contained 0.081 at. pct 0 as an impurity. In Fig. 1, it appears that this small amount of oxygen makes a significant contribution to the strength which cannot be ignored when we evaluate the contribution of the finely dispersed hydride. Let us assume the validity of the following equation: a0.2 = (a2o+a2R)1/2 [2] which is analogous to Eq. [I] for single crystals, and calculate values of UH for the hydrogen alloys by using the experimental values of 0.2 and o (0.081 at. pct) = 8.9 kg per sq mm. At the present time, the mine-owner has a number of patent crushers to choose from, when contemplating the erection of a mill; and a number of new ones are yearly brought to notice. We all know that the stamp-mill is the old standard; but several of the patent crushers, especially of the roller-type, are not without their merits. Having had a working experience, extending over a period of four years, with the " Bryan roller quartz-mill," working alongside of stamp-batteries, I take pleasure in giving to the members of the Institute the benefit of my experience with this mill.*

A plate of an 18 pct Ni (250 grade) maraging steel was homogenized, cold rolled, and re crystallized to produce a fine grained, homogeneous structure. The strength properties were then measured as a function of cold rollinq prior to aging. Material in the solution heat treated condition exhibited substantial strengthening from cold rolling. The strength increase and the rate of strengthening were proportional to the amount of cold work. This benefit, of up to 50 ksi, was retained during aging for 3 hr at 900°F. The structures produced by cold rolling and aging have been systematically investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The dislocation debris produced by cold work influences the morphology and distribution of precipitate particles as well as the rate of precipitation. An essential feature of the high nickel maraging steels is a martensitic transformation from y to a with the resultant production of a supersaturated bcc solid solution. This solution decomposes to form precipitates during a subsequent aging treatment.' The martensitic transformation in low carbon Fe-Ni alloys and the mechanical properties of these alloys have been studied extensively.2"4 The carbon content of maraging steel is kept very low to avoid the embrittling Fe3C phase and to minimize the acicular, or twinned martensite common to high carbon steels. Maraging steels are usually strengthened only by heat treatment, but cold working is also quite effective in this respect as was shown by Decker, Eash, and Goldman,' Kula and Hickey,5 and the present work. There is, however, some disagreement between the present results and those of Kula and Hickey. Because of their unusual combination of strength and toughness, the maraging steels are suitable for applications where reliability at high stress levels is required. The strength level is achieved through a combination of solid solution hardening,' substructure hardening,3 and precipitation hardening,6 of which the last is the most important. The toughness of these steels has been reported to be a result of the absence of brittle grain boundary precipitates,7 and the fact that the matrix is a massive martensite rather than a twinned martensite.' One of the problems in the manufacture and use of maraging steel has been its tendency to develop laminations in sheets parallel to the rolling plane.9,10 The present investigation was intended to determine whether or not an improvement in the microstructure of this steel by thermomechani-cal processing would improve mechanical properties. I) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES A plate ($ in. thick) of an 18 pct Ni-250 grade maraging steel* was obtained and examined metallo- "Analysis, wt pct: 18.1 Ni, 8.6 Co, 5.3 Mo, 0.4 Ti, 0.07 Mn, 0.05 Cr, 0.05 Si, 0.002B. 0.1 Cu. 0.05 Al. 0.002 Zr, 0.016 C, balance Fe. graphically. It was found to contain laminations as described by previous investigators. This plate was then annealed at 2100°F for 24 hr to promote homogeneity. Pilot studies on small coupons had shown that this was the minimum temperature required to accomplish homogenization in 24 hr. Since this treatment caused excessive grain growth, the steel was subsequently cold rolled and recrystallized. Cold rolling was accomplished at about 5 pct per pass to a total reduction of 66 pct. The standard solution annealing treatment (1 hr at 1500°F) was adequate to cause recrystallization of the cold worked steel. The recrystallized steel was then cold rolled and ground by various amounts to produce specimens with uniform thickness and selected amounts of cold rolling. All tensile specimens with less than 90 pct cold reduction were ground to a thickness of 0.050 in. Specimens with 90 pct cold reduction were 0.025 in. thick. All

Long range expansion plans begun in 1966 by The International Nickel Co. of Canada, producer of over 50% of the free world supply of the white metal, are so mammoth as to give rise to the speculation that something might have to burst at the seams. From an annual level of capital expenditure of $35 to $70 million, the company jumped in 1967 to $145 million in new capital investment and will come close to $200 million in 1968. Inco expects to spend $700 million in the next five years, beginning in 1968, for new mines and surface facilities in Canada. The program involves the opening of nine new mines within the next 3 1/2 years, expansion of producing mines, and construction of new plants and modernization and expansion of established ones to process the increased ore production. Beyond this, the company is committed deeply in developing new sources of nickel abroad. Any one of these new projects, if proven economic, would necessitate expenditures of about $100 million or more. For Inco, the economic strain was relieved without a rupture this spring when Henry S. Wingate, company chairman, reported' at the stockholders annual meeting that $150 million had been raised by the sale of bonds. This marked the first time in 32 years that the company had gone into debt.

THIS paper is a companion to the one by George A. Morrison on Mining a Deep Limestone Mine in Ohio.[+] Barberton is 8 miles west of Akron, Ohio, and 23 miles south of Cleveland. The underground mining of limestone at Barberton constitutes the world's deepest limestone mine. The stratigraphy is as follows: 0-20 ft. Loam, clay, sand and gravel. Water bearing. 20-40 ft. Fractured. sandstone. Water bearing. 40-110 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water bearing. 110-314 ft. Sandstone with interbedded shale, slightly fractured. Water carrying. 314-2197 ft. Shale with occasional seams of sandstone, which varies in thickness from a few inches to 4 feet. Dry. 2197-2247 ft. Limestone. Dry. 2247-2742 ft. Dolomitic limestone. Dry. 2742-2767 ft. Salt. Dry. 2767- Dolomitic limestone. Dry. All of the strata dip to the southeast, about 0.5 per cent from the horizontal. The top 110 ft. of the crust is water-bearing. The rock strata are naturally fractured to a depth of 314 ft., sufficient to allow the passage of water. In the shaft-sinking operations, a stra was encountered at a depth of 520 ft., and flows of methane gas were pierced at depths of 1350 and 1952 feet. Specifications for the mine plant called for, in part, the sinking of two vertical shafts and a hoisting plant capable of producing at the rate of 300 tons per hour. No. I shaft is 550 ft. west of No. 2 shaft. Each shaft measures 8 by 17 ft. outside of steel. General features of the design (Fig. I) are: Principal set members, 6-in. H-section; connecting angles (studdles), 3/8 by 4 by 4-in. angle irons; spacing of sets, 8 ft. centers; spacing of bearer sets, generally, 160 ft.; bearers, of 12-in. I-beams. Each bearing set featured a concrete ring about the periphery of the shaft, steel to rock, and 8 ft. in height; permanent guides, 6 by 10-in. long-leaf yellow pine, 85 per cent heart. THE SHAFT-SINKING OPERATION The preliminary shaft-sinking work consisted of driving interlocked steel piling about the exterior of the shafts to depths of 35 and 32 ft., respectively, and of such horizontal dimensions as to ultimately permit the pouring of a concrete collar 2 ft. in horizontal thickness. Following the pouring of a shaft collar, a temporary wooden headframe for shaft-sinking purposes was erected. The head-frame, while ordinary, featured: (I) a storage pocket of 300 cu. ft. capacity with truck servicing facilities, and (2) pneumatically operated dump doors, which were actuated by the hoistman, thus caring for the dumping of the "ball-and-chain"

FOLLOWING the discovery of diamonds in 1870 and the Witwatersrand gold fields in 1886 South Africa changed from a predominantly pastoral country with a scattered white population into a land whose economy came rapidly to be based primarily on mining. The total value of the mineral output of the Union in 1944 was approximately $493,000,000, to which gold contributed 84 per cent. Gold furnished some 33 per cent of the Union Government's total revenue in that year, and approximately half the country's population obtained its livelihood directly or indirectly from the gold mining industry. In any review of the Union's mining activities and in any consideration of the country's future, gold mining must occupy a prominent place. It is generally conceded that the present structure is not properly balanced and that an economy based on a preponderance of a single nonpermanent factor possesses potentialities of serious instability.

High-field critical transport current density (J) measurements at 4.2 °K as a Junction of applied magnetic field (H) were made on samples of cold-rolled and annealed columbium with H parallel to J. Microscopic examination of the samples revealed a well-defined planar fiber structure produced by the cold rolling. J was found to he lower when fibers are parallel to the direction of magnetic field penetration than when they are perpendicular. This effect may he a consequence of the interaction of flux movement with fiber boundaries. THE severe changes in microstructure brought about by cold working superconductors leads to profound changes in their superconducting behavior. In particular, the ability of a superconductor to carry a transport current with zero resistance (the maximum value of this current density will be called "J" in the presence of large external magnetic fields (to be referred to as "H") is greatly influenced by the microstructure. In the case of columbium, LeBlanc and Little1 and Autler et a1.2 have observed an increase in J due to cold work. LeBlanc and Little also observed an anisotropy in J in cold-rolled columbium strips, which Hake et al.3-6 have shown to depend upon the angle between H (H ? J) and the rolling plane. An increase in J due to cold work has been found in a variety of high-field superconducting alloys3'4'7-9 as has the anisotropy effect.10 First explanations of why cold work raised J invoked the idea that dislocations carried the high-field supercurrents,8,11 since cold working drastically increases the dislocation density and presumably the number of supercurrent paths. However, recent ideas on the nature of high-field superconductivity together with new experimental evidence reveal that the bulk of certain superconductors can remain superconducting in high fields while carrying high transport currents. These later developments have been discussed by Berlin-court and Hake12 and a comprehensive review has been prepared by Berlincourt.13 According to the ideas of Gorter14 and Anderson,15 one would expect that the influence of microstructure on high-field supercurrent density will depend on tine interaction between microstructure and penetrating flux and on the direction of the Lorentz

Fused alumina or silica crucibles were used as the containing vessel. X-ray powder photographs were taken with CrKcll radiation and the use of Straumanis type Norelco cameras of 114.6 mm diam. Crystallographic data for these compounds are shown in Table I. These results are in agreement with others of this series reported previousiy by Wernick and Geller.l The abnormally large atomic volume of Eu and Yb metal3 is manifested in EuAl2, and YbAl2, when one compares them with the compounds reported in Ref. 1. However, the behavior of Yb in the Ni compound is the same as that observed in Ni5Yb having the Cu5Ca structure.4 Thus, it appears that Yb has a valence closer to 3 only in the Ni compounds; i.e.. the 2s and Id electrons are lost to the conduction band.1,4 Europium in EuAl2 appears to have a valence closer to 2. In previous work.' X-ray patterns of ingots of NdCo2 indicated a multiphase material with faint indication of the presence of a phase having the MgCu2 structure. It was thought that NdCo2 formed peri-tectically from the melt, resulting in a multiphase system when cooled under nonequilibrium conditions. An X-ray pattern of a sample from a melt cooled more slowly than in past work showed that the major phase was NdCo2. The lattice constant, Table 1, is in excellent agreement with the value one can predict from the data of Ref. 1. One of the other phases was identified as Co5Nd. The author wishes to thank J. H. A reinvestigation of the lattice parameters of Ti-Sn alloys by the present authors has revealed consistently hiher c and a values than those obtained by Worrier. The difference is most pronounced in the c-parameters which are, therefore, used as a basis of comparison. This discrepancy was not due to air contamination, since precautions were taken to exclude this possibility. Specimens for Debye-Scherrer photograms were prepared by arc-melting 15-g buttons of Bureau of Mines titanium and 99.99 pct Sn, with compositions of 6, 8, 10, and 12 at. pct Sn. These buttons were forged under an oxygen-acetylene torch to 1/8-in. sq rods to produce relatively fine grained material. Scale and some surface were ground off, and the rods, after wrapping in molybdenum and titanium sheet, were vacuum annealed 15 min at 800 °C to remove hydrogen. Heat treatment of one of the samples at 875°C to produce ß and reveal a at the surface showed no surface contamination. Following the vacuum treatment, the specimens were wrapped in molybdenum and annealed for 1 week at 800°C under two atmospheres of argon. After water-quenching, the rods were ground so that the thickness tapered to 0.1 mm at the tips. The ground specimens were then recapsuled as previously and reannealed 1 hr at 800°C to remove cold work. The

FRED HELLMAN, New York.-My experience with shovel mining has been restricted almost entirely to Chuquicamata as far as operation is concerned. We had there an unusual condition in that the rock is cohesive because of the salts in it, so that you can probably work higher banks than is possible in most places. Recently they have reduced the height of the banks and have found that lower bank affords better working condition than the higher bank. It took two years of experimentation to determine the best height of bank for that particular mine. Each mine should be considered by itself and, to state off hand the best height of bank. for any given mine is impossible. We worked the high banks in Chile without much trouble. We adopted high banks in the beginning in order to obtain the minimum expense in railway approaches at that time. The first plan was for 50 ft.; then to get production started with the smallest possible expenditure of money, the approach to the deposit was changed and the first bank had an ultimate height of about 180 ft. We worked that bank; quite success-fully, but I do not think that it could be done anywhere else.

INTRODUCTION THIS paper attempts a survey of the principles involved in the com¬bustion of blast-furnace gas in boilers and stoves. I do not expect to be able to give much information which is actually new, since the laws and methods of calculation pertaining to this problem are contained in a number of handbooks; but, so far as I am aware, they have nowhere been treated exclusively with reference to this one problem of gas economy. The road which I follow is less that of strictly scientific research than that of the practical engineer, faced by operation problems which require a. quick solution by easily accessible means without a prolonged search in scientific handbooks. For this purpose I give a number of tables and diagrams, as well as the results of many years' practical working experience as combustion engineer, which I trust will prove useful to my readers. HISTORICAL Considering the tremendous efforts made during the last 15 years to increase the efficiency of all kinds of power plants, it is highly surprising that until a comparatively very recent period, progress in the economical combustion of blast-furnace gas has been so slow. The explanation generally put forth, that fuel has been so cheap that it was hardly worth while to bother about this economy, will not hold good, for the greatest trouble was taken to improve the combustion of coal and to reduce the consumption of steam. The most plausible explanation appears to be the general impression, held as an accepted fact, that gas, especially hot, uncleaned, blast-furnace gas, was not a good boiler fuel. Many managers of high repute had tried unsuccessfully to improve the conditions of its use, and the dictum went forth that efficiencies of over 60 per cent., particularly with high loads, were impossible. This was the situation not only in the United States, with very cheap fuel, but also in Europe, where fuel prices are twice and three times as high.

While the advantages in the use of high-line siliceous slags in lead smelting which Mr. Bretherton discusses in this paper are obvious under certain economical conditions, he gives me credit for the introduction of such slags when it does not belong to me. It is true I did considerable experimental work, off and on, for the purpose of finding such slags, while at the Germania in 1877 and 1878, but I did not have occasion to introduce any such slags for regular work, because I had no ores which fitted the economical conditions for using high silica and high lime, except in isolated cases for very brief periods. On the contrary, the ores I had to treat were mostly very ferruginous and very low in silica, so that, economically, I was compelled to run nearly always on slags, which allowed me to use the abundant flux I had without cost. It was August Raht who first had occasion to establish and use for long periods a slag high in silica and line, and low in iron. This was when he was confronted with the task of smelting the. Horn-Silver ores at the smelting works at Franklin, Utah, with as little expenditure for fluxing material as possible. I was at that time in Leadville, Col., where, in the new works I had built, the Billings and Eilers smelters, I had occasion to use profitably many slags, but never anything as high in the earthy bases and in silica as Mr. Raht had to use.
