New techniques in the magnetite and heavy media beneficiation industries demand more efficient magnetic dispersion and flocculation of the finely ground particles. Demagnetizing coils must produce several major effects, such as improving classification and screening efficiency, decreasing moisture content in filter cake and improving separation selectivity and green pellet properties. Likewise, magnetic flocculators must increase filtering rates and the settling rates of solids, improve magnetite recovery and produce cleaner water. To improve the design of equipment and to conduct tests leading to the optimization of such dispersion and flocculation, a program was initiated at Eriez Magnetics. The major conclusions reached are: 1. Laboratory and plant scale tests conducted on magnetite products show that a demagnetizing force of 450 rms oersteds at 60 cycles for 1/20- second duration will depolarize natural magnetite particles coarser than approximately 10 microns. This has been found satisfactory for most applications. 2. Effective flocculation of magnetite was obtained when a slurry with more than one percent magnetite was exposed for a period of approximately 1/15 second to a 600-gauss field. 3. The cost of demagnetizers (or flocculators) increases rapidly for larger diameter pipes. In order to reduce the cost, narrow rectangular sections are recommended for magnetic flocculators. 4. For minimum operating cost, permanent magnetic flocculators are ideal, chiefly because they do not require any maintenance and have no operating cost. 5. A newly designed electro-demagnetizing coil with high heat dissipation and a nonmetallic core provides high efficiency and long life. 6. The increased use of sintering for the beneficiation of iron ores and the reclaiming of flue dust creates a lively interest in sintering costs and economics. The character of material sintered and geographical location of plants so radically alter sintering costs and economics that it is well.to understand at least the basic elements which control such changes. The following cost factors are believed to be roughly approximated for large-scale Dwight-Lloyd continuously operated sinter-machine installations located anywhere. A survey of 25 novel drills has shown that spark drills have potential for drilling oil wells and blastholes at higher rates than rotary drills. Available laboratory and field data were extrapolated to drilling rates of 70 to 280 fph for full-scale spark drills. Most of the data used in these extrapolations were from small-scale laboratory tests at atmospheric pressure. Accurate extrapolation of the small-scale spark drill tests to full-scale field drills was complicated by the fact that the effect of fluid pressure in the well bore and the effect of spark size were not known. In order to answer these questions and to more accurately evaluate the potential of spark drills for drilling blastholes and oil wells economically, a high-voltage spark discharge system was assembled. This equipment produced powerful sparks (10,000 joules) equivalent to those that would be used on a 100-kw full-scale field drill. These sparks are 100 times more powerful than those previously used on spark drills, thus eliminating extrapolation of the spark size. In addition, a pressure chamber was modified to enable using these sparks to produce craters in rocks at fluid pressures up to 15,000 psi, thus eliminating extrapolation from atmospheric pressure to the high pressure existing in deep oil wells. These tests have provided considerable information for more accurately evaluating spark drills for oil-field drilling. Injection of gas to increase oil recovery has been considered for almost all important discoveries during the past ten or fifteen years. However, the number of gas injection projects having sufficient history and data is too limited to permit valid generalities of effectiveness of gas injection. Management and engineers are faced with a difficult problem of selecting those reservoirs which are susceptible to profitable application of gas injection. Injection of gas to maintain high pressure favors some factors affecting reservoir performance such as viscosity, surface tension, and formation volume factor of oil by keeping gas in solution and favors some operating features such as extending flowing life of wells and storing part of the produced gas for future use or sales. Injection of gas at low pressure involves lower compression ratio, or at least a single gas-gathering system, larger displacement volume in the reservoir per unit of gas handled, and permits effective utilization of the naturally existing energy and agent for oil displacement that is gas dissolved in oil. Each program is thus a compromise to meet optimum economic conditions while striving to attain maximum recovery of this important nautral resource. The statement has often been made that pressure maintenance would greatly increase oil recovery by permitting abandonment of formation oil inflated with gas in solution rather than abandonment of the same liquid volume of tank oil, if the same terminal oil saturation could be attained. Simple calculations indicate increases in oil recov- ery as high as one hundred per cent on this basis for high formation volume factor oil encountered in current deep drilling. IN any line of human activity logical handling requires an amount of attention to each phase that is in keeping with the importance of that phase. In the complex and rapidly changing field of modern ferrous metallurgy it is difficult to allot the proper degree of attention to the various subjects, and it is not surprising that one or more subjects of major importance should for a time be neglected. Bessemer steel is a good example of a neglected subject. It is largely taken for granted, inferior physical quality is assumed for it, and there is a lack of interest in its technical development and commercial application. Availability of supply is limited. In spite of this technical indifference, limited source and lack of commercial exploitation, bessemer steel con-stitutes a large volume of tonnage in daily use. There is a fairly prev-alent idea even among technical people that bessemer steel survives mostly because of low cost and by reason of a dwindling residue of applica-tions sufficiently common to permit of its use. The difference in cost between bessemer and open-hearth steel is governed largely by the relative cost of manufacture of pig iron and the market price of steel scrap. During the past four years there have been long periods of time during which the price of steel scrap was low enough so that open-hearth steel was considerably lower in manufacturing cost than bessemer. As to application, it may be pointed out that thousands of tons of this material in the form of bessemer screw steel are applied for moving parts in automotive and other equipment. Some forging work and considerable heat treating, particularly carburizing, is performed on this grade.

THE application of aviation to mining and petroleum operations, on the basis of economy and attainment, has become a demonstrated fact. According to Dominion Government records, 30. Canadian companies engaged in air transportation with northland mining camps, carried 13,000 tons of freight in 1935, and in 1936 carried 16,000 tons. In addition, many mining companies used planes to transport prospectors with canoes, outboard motors, gasoline drums and supplies to remote locations, and one company maintained a plane to take radium-bearing ore from its mine on Great Bear Lake nearly 1000 miles south to the rail-way at Waterways, Alberta. Heavy pieces of mining machinery weighing 2 tons are being carried by Ford trimotor planes over the Andes, at an altitude of not less than 15,000 feet. At Bulolo, New Guinea, 17,500 tons of disassembled gold-dredging equipment has been flown over inaccessible terrain, while supplies and building materials for a, community of 1000 whites have been transported by airplane. A 31..4-ton shaft was carried on one notable trip, while at another time an automobile, 2 tons of rice and a large safe went over the mountains in one plane. Fig. 1 shows an electric generator that was carried by plane to Bulolo. Many large American oil companies operated fleets of planes during 19:36, ranging from fast, luxurious air liners for executives to elaborate geological prospecting units, ambulance planes, freight carriers and pipe-line repair crews. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, commercial firms photo-graphed 16,291 square miles during 1935, while the Government compiled from aerial photographs by the Geological Survey in the United States 85,544 square miles. It was found that information could be determined in a fraction of the time required by surface methods.

THE several studies concerned with the annealing of thin nickel films have largely been restricted to films of a single thickness.1-4 It is well-known, however, that both physical and mechanical properties depend upon film thickness.5, 6 The strength-thickness relations found in vapor-deposited nickel films in the annealed and as-deposited states, as an example, are at least partially due to the density and arrangement of imperfections within the films.7, 8 For these reasons, the annealing characteristics of thin nickel films as a function of thickness were investigated. Electrical resistance was chosen to monitor annealing behavior since resistance changes are partially dependent upon defect structure. In addition, the equations predicting film resistivity as a function of thickness are already available.9, 10 Further advantages afforded by electrical-resistance measurements are its adaption to continuous readings during annealing and its relative simplicity. Nickel films were vapor-deposited, at average rates of 60Å per sec, on Vycor substrates held at room temperature in vacuums of about 10-5 torr. Afterwards, deposition-thickness measurements were made using a multiple-beam interferometric technique. A more detailed description of deposition procedures and the interferometer appear elsewhere.7, 8 The four-probe method was employed in measuring electrical resistance since this technique measures film resistance without contributions from lead wires and contacts. Resistance measurements were made before, during, and after annealing to temperatures of 700°C under vacuums of approximately 10-4 torr. Measurements were made every 25°C or more often when necessitated by unusual resistance changes. Cooling and heating rates were maintained at approximately 5°C per min. Anticipating the availability of tiltmeters suitable for use in boreholes, this article proposes a method of using one or more of these meters to determine in situ stress distribution before and after mining operations. Several ways of using relief techniques to measure in situ stresses in rocks have been developed. These techniques, summarized by Merrill,1 involve measuring deformations which take place when a specimen of rock is wholly or partially isolated from the stress field in the surrounding rock. Measurements of rock deformation caused by stress relief from mining operations can, in principle, also be used to estimate in situ stress distributions. Müller2 has mentioned experiments being carried on in Austria with a "deformation indicator" to determine the tilting of holes drilled before a mine opening is made. Similar work using borehole extensometers has been reported by Potts? and Duvall4 has called attention to the possible use of tiltmeters in making these measurements. Considerable attention is now being paid to the use of tiltmeters in detecting rock deformation associated with fault movements, earthquakes, earth tides, etc. The instruments used for these measurements have usually been of the mercury tube, water tube, or quartz fiber type, but because of their large size, and/or fragile nature, such instruments would not be suitable for use in mining stress measurements. Recent instrumentation developments, however, give promise that rugged, sensitive tiltmeters small enough for use in boreholes may soon be available.' In anticipation of these developments, this article presents a number of calculations of the possibility of using one or more tiltmeters emplaced in a drill hole prior to mining operations to determine the in situ stress distribution both before and after a mining operation. Dimension stone is a term applied to stone sold in blocks or slabs of specified shapes and usually of specified sizes, contrasted with crushed, broken and pulverized stone covered in another chapter. Dimension stone includes cut stone, rough building stone, ashlar,* rubble, monumental stone, paving blocks, curbing, flagging, and many types of ornaments and novelties carved from stone. Riprap-large, irregular blocks used for shore protection-is classed with crushed and broken stone. Composition, Varieties, and Properties Dimension stones are of many kinds. The principal varieties are granites, trap rock (diabase, basalt, and gabbro), sandstone, limestone, and marble. Slate is covered in a separate chapter. Granite is a visibly granular crystalline rock consisting essentially of feldspar, quartz, and mica or hornblende. The basaltic rocks are darker in color than the granites. They contain little or no quartz and consist largely of plagioclase feldspar, augite, pyroxene, and hornblende. They are classed commercially as black granites. Limestone consists essentially of calcium carbonate. Dolomites and magnesian limestones used as dimension stone are classed with the high-calcium limestones. Marble is a crystalline form of limestone, but in the trade, any carbonate rock which will take a polish is called a marble. Many limestones which are fossiliferous but which will take a polish are sold as a decorative stone for lobbies of hotels and office buildings. Sandstone consists essentially of silica in the form of sand grains cemented into a coherent mass. Although rock occurrences are numerous and widespread, the exacting requirements of use condemn all but a small fraction of them for commercial use as dimension stone. No deposit that has closely spaced joints or planes of weakness can be used because sound blocks of moderate to large size are demanded. Uniform texture and grain size, constant and attractive colors or color pattern, and freedom from impurities that may cause stains or deterioration usually are demanded. Hardness is a variable property. Granites and diabases are as hard as or harder than steel, while limestones and marbles may be scratched with a knife. The hardness of sandstone depends upon the degree of cohesion of the grains. Workability depends to a considerable extent on hardness, but the degree of hardness has little influence on use except where stones are subjected to abrasion as on steps or floors. "Texture" as applied to stone relates to the arrangement, uniformity, and size of the constituent grains. Stones are of many colors and thus can satisfy a variety of tastes. For monumental stone, a marked contrast between polished and tooled surfaces is preferred in order that inscriptions may be read easily. Strength requirements usually may be disregarded because any sound structural stone suitable in other respects is almost invariably many times as strong as would be required for any ordinary use. The pressure on the base course of the Washington Monument, Washington, D. C., is less than 700 psi, and highgrade granites, limestones, sandstones, and marbles will sustain a crushing load of 10,000 to 25,000 psi. The static, rapid, and shock-loading response of rock is of interest to many in the field of rock mechanics. For example, the effects of loading rates on strength and stress-strain characteristics of rock are quite important in defining input loading for use in the design of underground protective installations. Response data on rock subjected to shock loading over a wide range of pressures are also vital in the field of underground nuclear testing. In addition, material response is needed in design of shock-absorbing liners. A number of investigators have reported that ultimate compressive strength of rock increases with increased rates of loading.1-6 Wuerker3 stated that modulus of elasticity, obtained from sonic determinations, increased in some rocks by a factor as high as 4.5. It appears that only a limited amount of work has been done on comparing static modulus and modulus obtained from impact testing.6 Phillips4 showed that with increased rates of loading the deformation decreased. More recent work by Atchley and Furr5 showed that when moderate-strength concrete is stressed with increased loading rates, the axial strain at failure increased. One would expect this to occur if we think in terms of purely elastic materials. For example, if E is constant and maximum strength [amax], increases, the axial strain would also increase. However, in rock testing thus far we have worked almost exclusively with nonhomogeneous and inelastic rocks. From this fact alone the increase in axial strain with increased load application is noteworthy.

INTRODUCTION The Japanese dependency for mineral raw materials from foreign sources increased rapidly within the 20 years since the Korean war. During this 20 year period Japan has attempted to industrialize and develop her economy while depending mostly on heavy import of nearly all kinds of mineral raw materials. She has fabricated them using energy generated mostly by mineral fuel that are also imported. Fabricated goods are either used domestically to accelerate more fabrication industry or exported after adding more refinement or fabrication. In this paper iron ore as a major raw material for the Iron and Steel industry, three major base metals, copper, zinc and lead, and petroleum as a major energy source have been selected as examples to represent the general features of various kinds of mineral raw materials that are imported. Among other important mineral commodities for which Japan dependa upon foreign sources are: Aluminium, nickel and cobalt, potash and phosphorous 100 percent dependent and tin, tungusten, chromium and molybdenum over 95 percent dependent. IRON ORE Statistics for the important iron and steel raw materials, namely iron ore, coal and scrap iron are shown in Tables 1, 2 and Fig. 1. Iron ore is by far the most important and basic among these three commodities. There has been practically no steel or iron imported as a metal into Japan during this period. Iron ore, including aggregate such as pellets, and metallurgical coal are mostly transported in large ore cargo boats to the port where very efficient port facilities unload them directly at the steel mill site. Discussion of the paper of E. B. THORNHILL, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 104, August, 1915, pp. 1653 to 1670. D. B. HUNTLEY, Oakland, Cal.-About 15 years ago it chanced to be my lot to cyanide some mill tailings, assaying about $5 per toll in gold and, a few cents in silver. It was in southern Idaho, a. desert region where costs are nearly as large as in central Nevada. We knew that we had a lot of tailings that had been amalgamated and contained about 1 lb. of quicksilver per ton. We knew that we would dissolve some of the quicksilver when we cyanided them with say 0.25 per cent. cyanide solution. We figured (optimistically) that the cyanide would dissolve all of the quicksilver, and we thought to capture all of that, 1 lb. per ton; and we figured out profits as partly gold, partly silver, and partly quicksilver from the recovery in working those tailings. Actually, however, we did this: We had a battery of three large, old-fashioned silver-mill retorts. We retorted our zinc-dust precipitate, recovering about ¼ lb. of quicksilver per ton treated. That was only a loss of 75 per cent. of what we originally had, but still it was profitable by virtue of the conditions. I mention it partly to call attention to the crude old way of doing it, and partly to call attention to how chemical methods for recovering quicksilver have developed in the last 15 years.
