The purpose of this article is not only to describe the plant and method of cyaniding the Treadwell concentrates, but to present some of the results of the experimental work obtained in the past three years for the Alaska-Treadwell Qold Mining Co., at Douglas Island, Alaska, under the direction of F. W. Bradley, Consulting Engineer, and Robert A. Kinzie, General Superintendent, of the affiliated companies. At the time the experimental work was undertaken the concentrates were being shipped to the smeltery at Tacoma, Wash., and the cost for treatment of 3-oz. (gold) concentrates was $11.95 per ton, divided as follows : Smelting-charges,......... $4.00 Loading, freight, insurance, etc., . 2.89 Interest due to time loat in transit and in settlement,... 0.05 Loss due to settlement for 95 per cent. of the gold at $20 per ounce, 6.01 Total,...$11.95 From the experimental work described later, it was estimated that 96 per cent. extraction could be made by treatment on the ground, and that the cost, when treating 80 tons per day, would be $3.25 per ton, divided as follows : Per Day. THE manganese ore deposits of the Gold Coast, British West Africa, occur in very ancient rocks, of both sedimentary and metamorphic types. In. certain respects they strongly resemble those of India and Brazil, as contrasted with those of Tertiary age in Georgia. Viewed from the present condition of the maganiferous rocks, the oldest deposits are in the sediments. Later than these are the progressively metamorphosed representatives of these sediments; youngest are the products of decay and degradation with the concentration of manganese oxide of both areas. The oldest occurrences are in argillaceous and siliceous phyllites and slates, which show only a moderate amount of metamorphism. They belong to a series which also includes mudstones, sandstones, grits, conglomerates and subordinate limestones, with tuffs and lava-flows largely of basic types. To this series I have given the name Birrim. Its age is unknown, for no definite fossils have been discovered in it. As the characteristics of these non-fossiliferous strata at many places are the same as those of strata in many parts of the world that are suitable for the preservation of fossils and that contain them, it is assumed that the Gold Coast deposits are pre-Cambrian. These rocks of the Birrim series have normally a northeast-southwest strike and are folded, but not to any very great degree except in certain belts., From the Eastern Province of the Gold Coast they may be traversed across their strike for more than 600 miles to the extreme northwestern corner of the Northern Territories. Thence. they probably extend much further into French Territory.

UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction. It is taken for granted that the graduate will have a good understanding of English, mathematics, mechanics, electricity, chemistry, physics, geology, and surveying, in addition to his major courses in mining. Somewhat belatedly, industry hopes he will have had at least an introduction to the subject of labor relations, the importance of which is only too clear at present. The coal industry expects, of course, that students in mining engineering will be taught the strictly mining subjects by men who have had practical experience in the mines and who keep themselves well informed in regard to current methods. While the undergraduate is subject to the control of members of the teaching profession, industry expects him to be trained in certain ways that are not a part of his textbooks, but can be made an inseparable part of his development by the skillful supervision of his teachers. Of the desired characteristics, dependability is of the utmost importance. Probably most employers would overlook certain short-comings if the young graduate demonstrated that he was thoroughly dependable. If he always appeared at the right place at the right time with the proper equipment, he would soon be well established as a welcome member of his organization. The graduate who gets a reputation for being undependable will have little opportunity for advancement. Closely allied to dependability is loyalty. Athletic teams and social groups in college tend to develop loyalty which may well be carried over into industry. This does not mean that the graduate has to be satisfied with customary practices. The average manager is glad to see the graduate make constructive criticism as long as he demonstrates his loyalty at the same time. It is important that his loyalty keeps him alert arid ready to take helpful action for the benefit of his organization, and especially to stand with it during times of stress. With or without an introduction to labor relations in college, the graduate is expected to develop ability in this most important field. Beginning with himself, he will find it essential to deal agreeably with his immediate associates. Getting along in friendly fashion with his own small group will be a great help as his responsibilities increase and he is required to deal with larger numbers of persons. On a higher scale, his interest in his community may grow at the same time by voluntary work in any one of a great number of useful activities. Industry expects the graduate engineer to be a mature man at the time he gets his first job. Supposing that he has better than average intelligence, industry expects him to continue to grow intellectually and to fit himself for responsible jobs when they are offered to him. For this reason, employers are apt to look over his college record to see what he did that would indicate his fitness for leadership. There is interest in knowing what he did beyond the requirements. As evidence of his mental growth, it is expected that the graduate will do independent thinking; that he will not take too much for granted. When he reads a report, he should develop the ability to see whether the subject is new or whether it is just a description of an old method that has been superseded by something better. For the same reason, the graduate should be able to accept conditions that have been arrived at by sound experience rather than cling to something else that seems better in theory. In this connection, it may be remarked that the ability to operate successfully a personal budget will be noteworthy, as it may be assumed that a man who knows how to conduct his own affairs will be prepared to assume the larger responsibilities of industry. Membership in AIME will indicate to the employer that the graduate is interested in the mining industry as a whole. Therefore, it is good evidence of something more than a local outlook. Quite apart from college training and mental ability, the newly employed graduate will be expected to be willing to do hard manual labor for a time. This will give him an understanding of the actual conditions of work done by those he supervises later. He will gain their confidence and be able to see that the work is carried on in a safe and efficient manner. Part of this experience may be acquired in his summer vacations during his undergraduate career. Such work would make a favorable impression on a prospective employer, especially if the graduate showed a willingness to continue it until he was prepared for something better. To summarize, the man in authority in the coal industry will not quarrel with the professor of mining engineering over details of curriculum. He will be pleased if the school sends him graduates who possess a good foundation in the courses studied, and who may be depended upon to do their work faithfully and intelligently. Such men will be ready when the time comes to assume their places as leaders of an essential industry.

Alexander Parkes patented in England in 1851-52-53 a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, making use of the greater affinity of silver for zinc than for lead, discovered by Karsten in 1842. The efforts in England to develop it commercially were not particularly successful, nor was the attempted introduction into the United States. This last was not surprising, as it was about the beginning of our Civil War, and at that period there was very little lead-bullion produced in the United States and there was no field for the process here. There was at that time on Staten Island an establishment that pattisonized lead, probably from Rossie, N. Y., and Chester, Pa., and possibly some Spanish lead, but the production of lead-bullion in the Far West had not yet begun. In 1864, Edward Balbach, of Newark, N. J., patented in this country a process for desilvering lead by means of zinc, and in 1867 Edward Balbach, Jr., patented a " movable black-lead retort with a neck, placed in a furnace," for the purpose of distilling the alloy of zinc, lead, and the precious metals. A brief comparison of the Parkes and the Balbach processes is interesting. The Parkes process as practiced in England consisted in stirring into silver-bearing lead, melted in a kettle, from 1 to 2 per cent. of zinc, cooling, skimming the alloy of lead, zinc, and silver that rose to the surface, liquating it in an iron retort, distilling the residual rich alloy in fire-clay retorts, thus regaining the zinc, and refining the desilvered lead at a low heat in a shallow cast-iron pan that formed the hearth of a reverbera-tory furnace. AT the first meeting of the Institute, a paper was read by Mr. Rothwell, calling attention to the importance of at once considering the great waste of anthracite coal under the present system of mining and preparing that fuel for market, and a committee was appointed to examine and report upon the method now in use. About the time the committee were selected, a general resumption of work, after the long strike, took place in the coal regions, and the members of the committee have not in consequence had as much leisure to devote to the study of the question as its importance de¬mands. In the present preliminary report we shall merely sketch out the plan which we propose to pursue in our investigations, so that when our fellow-members are called upon to assist us in our work by fur¬nishing statistics, etc., they may understand more clearly for what object our inquiries will be made. As one of the most practicable methods of obtaining the informa¬tion requisite for an intelligent consideration of our subject, we pro¬pose to send, from time to time, to members and others interested in the mining of anthracite coal, printed sets of questions relating to points under consideration. We would here impress upon our fellow¬-members the importance of filling up these papers as far as they can from their own knowledge. We would, of course, wish each ques¬tion to be answered as fully as possible, but we do not expect every one to answer them all. One question well answered would be of more use to us than the whole paper filled up with answers, many of

ALL technical men who are planning to visit the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago this summer-and all reports indicate that it will be worth visiting-should try to be there during Engineers' Week, beginning June 26. At that time most of the national engineering societies of the country will hold important meetings in that city. Engineers will thus have an opportunity not only to see the Fair at a time when special programs have been arranged for their benefit, but will have the opportunity to meet their professional brothers and to attend technical sessions of direct interest to them. The A.I.M.E. headquarters will be at the Stevens Hotel, and it will be to the interest of every Institute member who expects to attend the Fair at that time to secure his accommodations as promptly as possible. MY FIRST paper dealing with the theories of the hardening of steel by rapid cooling was published in the Transactions of this Institute in 1896-30 years ago-under the title "The Microstructure of Steel and the Current Theories of Hardening;" hence, also, the title of the present paper. It was extensively discussed and was, I believe, one of the starting points of many subsequent papers and discussions of the same subject, discusssions which at times became almost violent and which led to the formation of different schools such as the "Carbonists" and the "Allotropists." Some of the older members of the Institute, who took part in the debate or who were interested observers, will, I am sure, have kept a vivid remembrance of it. The controversy gradually quieted down, apparently for lack of ammunition, without any side acknowledging defeat. Recently, however, interest in it has been revived through the claims of some that these vexed questions had at last been solved. In an effort to ascertain if possible the prevailing view of those best qualified to express an opinion a questionnaire was submitted to the following gentlemen: J. 0. Using published surface-diffusion (D,) data and published sintering equations, it is shouln that surface difusion should dominate the neck-growth stage of intering for all materials in which D, has been measured (six metals and A1as). Also, grain boundary diffusion can be expected to contribute appreciably to shrinkage and possibly to neck growth below some critical temperature of the order of 70 pct 01- the absolute melting temperatuve. In view of the widespread conclusion in previous sintering work that volume diffusion dowzinates neck gvowth, experiments were conducted using spherical copper powders to test this conclusion. Scaling studies on neck growth at 950°and 1020°C clearly demonstrated that suyface diffusion dorninates. Kinetic studies on shrinkage gave more equivocal results that indicated an increasing role of' grain boundary transport at lower temperatures. Five diarszeters from 100 to 300 u were used in the scaling sludy and a temperature range of -650' 10 950 C was covered in the shrinkage studies. All experiments were conducted in dvy hydrogen. In 1949, Kuczynski published his now classic paper on the determination of the transport mechanism in sintering from the time laws of neck growth. In the interim, these laws have been applied to many systems and slightly modified by several authors. Essentially all these authors concluded that, for crystal- line materials, the dominant transport mechanism in neck growth is volume diffusion. This stems from the observation that the neck radius increases about as t"5 and that the activation energy approximates that for lattice diffusion. A related but independent series of studies stems from Mullins' rigorous analysis of the growth of the groove formed where a grain boundary meets a free surface." xperimental work stemming from this analysis has shown that for each crystalline material studied (Au, Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe, Pt, Al2O3) surface diffusion was clearly the dominant transport mechanism for groove widths up to the order 10 to 20 p. The ratio of the quantity of material being carried by lattice diffusion to that carried by surface diffusion increases linearly with the groove width, so surface diffusion is dominant for all widths under 10 to 20 u. The analysis of the relative contributions of surface and volume diffusion to grain boundary grooving, and to neck growth in sintering, shows that they are quite similar. Thus, using the available surface-diffusion data and the approximate equations of Kuczynski, or the more rigorous recent equations of Nichols and Mullins, 3 it can be shown that the small necks between particles must grow almost entirely by surface diffusion. The purpose of this study was to re-examine the basis for the conclusion that the neck-growth stage of sintering proceeds by volume diffusion. Using spherical copper powders, of several different diameters, precise experimental measurements were made of both neck growth and shrinkage. Application of Herring's scaling laws to the neck-growth data clearly indicated that neck growth occurred by surface transport, even though the neck radius increased as or Using the recent analysis of Mullins and Nichols as well as published data on surface diffusion, it is shown that the observed time law, as well as actual rate of neck growth, can be satisfactorily explained by a surface-diffusion mechanism.

The discovery of the Carlin deposit was the result of discriminating geologic research and prospecting devoted to the objective of finding a gold deposit that could be mined by open pit methods. By the late 1950s, Newmont Mining Corp. was becoming increasingly concerned about the trend of rapidly rising underground mining costs unless bulk mining methods could be applied. The desirability of finding an open-pittable gold deposit was apparent. The attention of Newmont geologists was directed to Nevada by the publication of two papers: "Paleozoic rocks in North-central Nevada" (1958) and "Alinements of Mining Districts in North-central Nevada" (1960), both authored or co-authored by Ralph J. Roberts of the United States Geological Survey. John Livermore, geologist of Newmont Exploration Ltd., attended a talk given by Roberts in Ely, Nevada in the summer of 1961. These papers and the address by Roberts gave details concerning the Roberts Mountain overthrust, a 483 km (300-mile) long, shallowdipping fault which pushed clastic and volcanic rocks of early and middle Paleozoic age eastward over younger marine formations. Subsequent uplift and doming with consequent erosion had locally removed the upper plate strata exposing windows of lower plate carbonate rocks. Roberts noted that the principal mineral deposits of the region, including gold, were associated with these windows which exhibited a preferred alinement. In the summer and fall of 1961 Newmont's exploration geologists John Livermore and J. Alan Coope began a systematic examination of gold occurrences associated with these windows, aided by further discussion with geologists of the US Geological Survey. Attention was directed to the Lynn and Carlin windows, particularly to those formations lying immediately above and below the Roberts Mountain fault. It was appreciated at the time that many of the gold occurrences in the region were unusual in that no colours were obtained even when panning high grade samples. A large number of rock samples were collected and analysed using fire assaying procedures, and background values for gold were established. This systematic rock sampling resulted in the identification of a distinct area of anomalous gold values, and a block of claims was staked in late October, 1961. These claims, plus an adjoining optioned 32.4 ha (80 acres) of ground, cover the main area of the present Carlin gold mine. Prior to snowfall that winter, one of the bulldozed assessment pits required to establish a claim's discovery exposed 24 m (80 ft) of mineralization assaying 0.007 kg/t (0.22 oz per st) gold. In the spring of 1962 a program of trenching, sampling, and geological mapping followed by rotary drilling was underway. Other properties in the area were acquired. The generally undistinguished nature of the dolomitic siltstones and silty dolomitic limestones hosting the micron-sized gold particles, coupled with the lack of visually associated guide minerals, made identification of the gold bearing areas very difficult. The entire drill column had to be assayed to ensure that values were not overlooked, as very often sections that might be assumed to be waste turned out to be high grade. On September 10, 1962 a high grade intersection of 24 m (80 ft) assaying over 0.03 kg/t (1 oz per st) gold was encountered in the third hole drilled. An expanded program of both rotary and diamond drilling led to the further delineation of the ore body. By December 1963, the exploration program had established an initial reserve of 10 Mt (11 million st) grading 0.01 kg/t (0.32 oz per st) gold. A 1.8 kt/d (2,000 stpd) processing plant was constructed and the first gold bullion was poured in May, 1965, just two years and eight months after the discovery hole was drilled. A university is a place to build minds and develop leaders. It provides the tools necessary for the development of new ideas which come from the inquisitive mind and is one of the stepping stones to management responsibilities for the truly ambitious. However, it is not always a financially sound investment! Lately, there have been several articles published on the economic advantages of a college education. These articles tend to average wages together according to education and years of service. Their tabulations generally include the chairman of the board, various vice presidents and plant managers and do not reflect the achievement of the average graduate. They consistently fail to include an analysis of the investment a college education requires. In reality, the bright high school graduate would make more real money over a 20-year period if he went directly to work "on the hill" than he would if he graduated from college. Furthermore, he would find little difference between his wages and those of the college graduate in the period from 20-30 years after high school graduation.

Your committee's secretary submits the following report, or summary, to the- members of the committee, in an endeavor to lay before them a general review of the information so far received and also his own knowledge .of the work as carried on at a number of plants, this being done in part to secure further information and suggestions from members and lead to a more effective means of furthering the work of the committee. It is suggested that more detailed data be compiled regarding engineering features involved, and that papers be contributed which will deal with the safeguarding of underground electrical installations. There are few operating companies which have not started a more or less systematic campaign to safeguard their employees from accidental injuries and unhealthful surroundings, but a great deal is to be gained by experience. All may welcome the advice and cooperation of those who have been actively engaged in the work and have demonstrated the results obtainable by organized effort, and it is, therefore, exceedingly gratifying to note the ready assistance and hearty cooperation rendered by the companies that may be truly termed pioneers in the movement. No solution of the safety problem is to be found in a strict standardization of methods, rules or devices, as' the various mining, milling and metallurgical practices present too' many conditions differing broadly in general principles, but some standard system embodying principles, already proven to be efficient should be created, which may be modified or elaborated to meet specific requirements of each individual. company, or to fit working conditions as they exist in the various mining camps throughout the country. An industrial plant is -primarily a business undertaking, therefore the economic side-of a safety or welfare campaign is of importance. Many small operators have been deterred from undertaking the work by their belief that it involved an expense beyond their means, and one that could not be counterbalanced by greater efficiency or saving along other lines. This idea is generally clue to a lack of knowledge of the actual costs of such work, and of the results secured by judicious selection of a method commensurate with the. size and nature of the opera-

The Convertol process was first described in Ger- many by Muschenborn1 in 1952. In the U. S. Fraser2 reported this new process in 1953, and Brisse and McMorris-resented the results of a Convertol pilot plant at the Alpheus preparation plant in Gary, W. Va., illustrating the mechanics of the process by a series of sketches. The purpose of the present investigation was threefold: 1) to determine the relative effectiveness of various oils and hydrocarbons for recovering coal by the Convertol process, 2) to ascertain the behavior of coal pulps in this process under various operational conditions, and 3) to compare Convertol with flotation in the recovery of fine coals.

WAGES in the United States, in spite of the wage freeze, have increased materially. Overtime payments have become standard practice in almost all industries. Now efforts are being made to place wages on an annual basis, and if this is adopted, it will result in an increase in the cost of production. Organized labor today is more powerful than ever before; union membership is large and steadily increasing, and in many instances membership in the union is a prerequisite to employment. The treasuries of many unions are strong as a result of the large membership and full employment. The unions, therefore, today are in a much better position than ever before to carry on long strikes. Politically, too, the unions are more powerful today than they ever were. On the basis of their strength, one may expect that some of the demands that the labor unions will make in the not distant future will be granted. It is, therefore, quite evident that before long, particularly when the curtailment in war production reaches about 40 per cent, this country will be confronted with a serious labor problem.

The allotropic volume changes of the ,metallic elements are reviezoed with the conclusion that in general atomic volume is conserved to better than 1 pct in such transformations. A table of the atomic volumes of the metallic elements is given and its use in considering the size factor in alloys is discussed. The importance of the concept of atomic-size factor, due to Hume-Rothery and coworkers,' is firmly established. Most attempts at quantitative formulations of this concept have employed the atomic radius (half some interatomic distance) as the measure of size and innumerable tables of such radii exist. This is probably, however, an unfortunate choice of parameter. Firstly, discussion in terms of interatomic distances requires a knowledge of the crystal structure. While this is known, except for a few cases, for the elemental structures, there are still many undetermined alloy structures. Secondly, except for the simpler structures, face-centered cubic (Al),* body-centered cubic (A2),* and hexagonal-close-packed (A3).* with ideal axial ratio, there is no unique in- teratomic distance, an m y decision must be made as to which distance, or which average of the distances, should be used. However, the most important point is that for metals the dominant bonding parameter can generally be expected to be atomic volume and not interatomic distance. This is perhaps most explicitly stated in the Wigner-Seitz cellular method.' In this approximation, cellular polyhedra of atomic volume v are replaced by spheres of radius Y,: 4/3 ?rs3 = v. That is, there is no reference to the interatomic distances. If atomic volume is in fact the dominant parameter, then in allotropic transformations we might expect to find atomic volume approximately conserved. For example, in the A1 ? A2 transformation we would thus have

If it had not been for the persistent cold wind, the sun blazing out of a cloudless blue sky would have made it one of those warm, idyllic early spring days which attract the socalled "snowbirds" to Northern Mexico for a vacation at this time of year. At a drill site perched on top of a rather exposed mountain we were installing a number of borehole extensometers in diamond drill holes. A Threading Problem For the uninitiated in geotechnical instrumentation, a borehole extensometer is a series of anchors installed at various depths in a borehole, each anchor being independently connected by a tensioned wire to a measuring device set in the collar of the hole. Any movement of the rock at depth is detected by the anchors and transmitted by the wires to the measuring device. Flexible plastic tubing is used as a spacer between the anchors and the measuring wires are run up the inside of the tube. At this particular site we were installing an instrument string nearly 1000 ft in length. Threading wire only 0.041 in. in diam through 1000 ft of plastic pipe is almost as difficult as getting the proverbial camel through the eye of a needle.

A PAPER recently presented before the Anthracite Section of the A. I. M. E. by S. J. Phil- lips, Mine Inspector, Fifth Anthracite District, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, covering the water hazards in the anthracite coal mines of the Lackawanna River Valley, was especially timely because the conditions there are duplicated to a large extent in the Wyoming Valley, which is traversed by the Susquehanna River with its many large tributary streams. Also, in the southern anthracite field, where there are a number of large creeks, similar pumping problems and mine water hazards will in time be presented if mining is continued to its conclusion.

PART I. INTRODUCTORY. § 24. INTRODUCTION.-This paper discusses the chief existing data as to the temperature, in iron-carbon alloys, of Ae.3, the upper limit of the transformation range when in equilibrium, as distinguished from Ac3, the temperature at which the end of the transformation is noted in heating up, and from Ar3, that at which its beginning is noted in cooling down. The former is in fact carried above Ae3 and the latter below Ae3 by lag. I touch incidentally on the influence of manganese on Ae3 (§ 29, p. 1102). The sections, tables, and illustrations, are numbered consecutively with those in the accompanying papers by Howe and Levy on Determination of, the Position of Ae3 in Carbon-Iron Alloys, and by Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon on Thermal and Microscopical Examination of Professor Howe's Standard Commercial Steels, to which the present paper forms a sequel. § 25. The contradictoriness of our present evidence is shown by grouping it together in Fig. 14. For instance, both Goerens and Meyer (Series 2) and Meuthen (Series 12) used practically stationary temperature, and thus reduced the influence of lag very greatly; yet Ae3 for 0.32 carbon steel according to the former investigators is 894°, but according to Meuthen it is at or below 770°, a discrepancy of 124° or more. In view of our ability to measure these high temperatures within a few degrees, the existence of such a discrepancy is as unwelcome as it seems needless. I attack the thankless task of bringing some order out of this chaos.

The less developed nations maintaining a free enterprise economy (to which this chapter is addressed) have real and substantial opportunities to lay a foundation for general economic progress by using their mineral resources. Most of these nations have mineral resources which could be developed. By seizing these opportunities, nations seeking rapid economic development can secure a source of foreign exchange earnings to finance the imports needed for growth and, at the same time, increase the technical knowledge and well-being of an important part of their population. History clearly shows the manner in which most of the currently industrialized nations have used mineral resources to support their development. Indeed, few nations have managed to achieve a high level of income without a firm base of mineral resource development. The main exceptions appear to be the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and New Zealand, and the last two have based their prosperity on a highly efficient agriculture. Economic growth in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, and Russia was importantly based on the use of indigenous mineral resources. Despite this record of accomplishment through mineral development, many of the currently less developed nations are not taking advantage of the opportunities available in the mineral field. Restrictive laws or practices in many such nations operate effectively to prevent development of mineral resources. This failure to grasp real opportunities for development is based on a series of arguments that the mineral field offers few substantial and attainable advantages. Among these, the following propositions appear the most important:
