WHEN a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibili-ties of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or 1/4-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1.) The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands.

Six months out of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut down a multi-million dollar plant besieged with -40°F temperatures and a 40 mph wind. It takes only one man-door improperly latched to feeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later, the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Some important things must be remembered in plant design for cold and remote areas. For one thing, everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore be kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas, on the other hand, must be adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles, for instance, have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50°F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze UP.

As the conflict between the mineral industry and preservationists steadily increases, it becomes urgent to determine as precisely as possible the costs of developing vs. not developing our domestic mineral resources so that enlightened mineral policy decisions can be made. A simple discounted cash flow equation is suggested as an approach to assigning a public-interest dollar value to mineral resources. Present value of a piece of land underlain by a mineral resource is taken as equal to the discounted cash flow derived from the resource corrected for present and future surface land values. The equation is effective as a base for mineral aggregate resource planning for metropolitan areas if transportation cost differences are substituted into the cash flow component. Suitably modified, the equation can be fitted readily into an existing computer simulation program for aggregate mineral resource planning in metropolitan areas. However, because of the lack of accurate input, the equation is less effective for other mineral commodities such as base metals and coal. Nevertheless, within a somewhat philosophical context, the equation still has utility and is effective in defining the problem of public interest values for minerals other than mineral aggregates.

In this paper it is suggested that the degree of contiguity (or contact) between adjacent grains be described by three parameters which can be rigorously determined from measurements on a random plane of polish. An expression is also derived for the number of contacts per unit volume and it is shown that this quantity can-not, in general, be estintated from measurements on a random plane. IN a recent contribution1 Gurland has proposed various parameters for describing the degree of contiguity (or contact) between grains of the same phase in an alloy. To relate these parameters to measurements on a random two-dimensional section, it was necessary in most cases to make some assumption about the form of the structure. Since Gurland was specifically interested in sintered carbide structures, he chose, quite reasonably, to assume that the grains were constant-size spheres and that all the intersections were flat areas of constant radius. Since, as we will show, the relationships between the parameters and the measurements are strongly dependent on the grain shape and size distribution, it is evident that these assump tions will not be satisfactory approximations for a

IN reviewing the aerial cameras produced in different countries, it becomes apparent that in nearly all of them an attempt has been made to secure the greatest possible angle of view. This angle, of course, is determined by the objective. The objectives most commonly in use in aerial cameras have a maximum angle of 65º. The objective developed for this new Zeiss camera combines freedom from distortion and brilliant definition, with an angle of 95º. Aerial mapping, it is claimed, has been placed on a different economic basis, and new possibilities presented, particularly in connection with automatic stereoscopic plotting instruments, to which some short references are made. One way of enlarging the angle of view is to couple several instruments with their axes convergent, thereby producing a multilens camera. Typical of cameras of this sort in the United States is the Bagley four-lens camera, which later was developed into the five-lens camera (T3-A) of the U. S. Air Corps. More recently, in order to get away from the unfavorable Maltese cross image field of the five-lens camera, and to obtain a more practical form, two five-lens cameras were combined. By using them in tandem and rotating them by 45º relatively to each other, a ten-lens camera was produced, covering an octagonal ground area, with a total angle of view of 140º. Similar designs have been evolved in other countries. In all of them, however, a number of difficulties have arisen, quite apart from their large weight and high cost. Because of their complex mechanism, numerous shutters and magazines, and the high precision with which these parts must be interadjusted and synchronized, these cameras are far from dependable Moreover, a multilens camera by itself does not yet constitute a complete outfit for producing pictures suitable for photogrammetric survey. Because all the component pictures, except the central one, are obliques, it is always necessary to employ rectifying apparatus which transforms the marginal views to the perspective of the central one. Development in the upper Texas Gulf Coast during 1944 resulted in the discovery of 19 new fields as compared with 11 during 1943. These discoveries include 10 oil fields, one dry gas field, and eight gas-condensate fields. Drilling During the year 590 wells were drilled as compared with 418 drilled during 1943. Of these operations, 485 wells were drilled in proven fields, with the following results: 281 oil wells, 22 condensate wells, one dry gas well and 141 dry holes. The remaining 105 wells were wildcats, of which 19 were producers. The geological distribution of these discoveries was as follows: In 1944, production amounted to 178,-522,630 bbl., which was an increase of some 31,670,384 bbl. over the 1943 figure of 136,852,246 bbl. These figures include both condensate and oil production, as separate figures are not available. Wildcatting in the area was more successful during 1944 than in 1943 as the following comparison of number of wells drilled illustrates: Discoveries during 1944 Smith Point, Chambers County.—Standard Oil Company of Texas completed its No. I State, sec. 109, on Feb. 15, 1944, in a Frio sand at 8135 to 8146 ft. The well flowed 250 bbl. of 42º gravity oil through an 1/8-in, choke. Gas-oil ratio was 800 to I; tubing pressure, 1100 bbl. Four other oil wells and one gas well were completed during the year. This discovery does not appear to be of major importance. The producing area lies on the upthrown side of a large fault. North Winnie, Chambers County.—Sun Oil Co. completed No. I P. E. Dougherty on Apr. 27, 1944, from the Frio, through perforations at 8757 to 8759 ft. The initial production was 154 bbl. of 38.3º gravity oil through an 1/8-in. choke. Gas-oil ratio Was 2526 to 1; tubillg Pressure, 2280 1b.; casing Pressure, 1225 lb.; total depth, 9519 ft. Three other wells were drilled during the Year. This discovery is on the downthrown side of the major Winnie Stowell fault, and increases in magnitude the already large producing area along this fault. A SEARCH through the available literature shows that the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has not been systematically studied. This seems rather odd because all three elements are fairly abundant and have better than average corrosion resistance; however, they have high melting points, which makes experimental work difficult. Cobalt and nickel form a continuous series of solid solutions and each metal dissolves about 7.5 per cent silicon. Many ternary alloys have been studied and the results have been published in a great many different ways, but to present such data in a short but clear and understandable manner is still a problem. The following pages describe the results of the study of 76 alloys from which the partial ternary diagram (Fig. 1) of the cobalt-nickel-silicon system has been drawn. The alloys were chosen according to the plan in Fig. la by taking definite ratios of cobalt and nickel, such as 70 Ni, 30 Co or 40 Ni, 60 Co, and adding silicon in various percentages. Each section was studied in detail by means of thermal analysis and microscopic examination, but only two of these detailed sections were thought necessary in the point perspective drawing to give a comprehensive picture of the liquidus, solidus and solid transformations that take place over the temperature ranges studied. Complete thermal analyses and microscopic data are given in Table 1.

A prediction is made of the airflow at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Laboratory with a ventilation computer program that accounts for fan-driven forced ventilation and temperature-induced natural ventilation. There was substantial agreement between measured and predicted airflow rates. The capability of the program is demonstrated as a planning aid for ventilation under emergency conditions in a multilevel coal mine. Smoke spread in a multilevel mine is analyzed following the occurrence of two events, the failure of the main exhaust fan and the development of a fuel-rich fire in a passageway.

The solubility of niobium carbide in y iron has been determined for the temperature range 1000" to 1300°C from the carbon content of a series of Fe-Nb alloys equilibrated with hydrogen-methane mixtures. The pre-production interval, beginning with the recognition of an orebody's best potential and ending with significant production, contains time-dependent conditions well appreciated by miners but not always understood or appreciated by the landowners, investors, and legislators with whom a miner must deal. The expression persists, even outside of Western fiction, that someone has "found a mine." From a slightly more knowledgeable position, the question is asked "How long does it take to make a mine?" and an all-encompassing answer is expected. By scanning the discovery and development history of hundreds of mines and rejecting those which involve rehabilitation or expansion of older mines, some generalizations can be attempted. It should be kept in mind that while physical conditions involving the geology of the orebody and the geographic surroundings do not change markedly with time, technologic and economic conditions do change from year to year. The new methods, facilities, markets, land tenure, and politics form a pattern in which today's mines are made and which do sometimes modify the pre-production interval.

Brazil is one of the most outstanding examples of economic development of our time. Its amazing growth record is substantiated by a GNP which has increased at an average rate of 92% for the period 1968-1970 and estimates for 1971 range from 11.7-12.5%. Hence, this growth, coupled with a more relaxed attitude of the Brazilian government towards foreign participation in business opportunities and the remittance of profits out of the country, has caused many exploration companies to reevaluate the potential of Brazil. Despite recent press notices and publicity, Brazil is still not a mining country in the tradition of Canada or Australia. It is still basically an agriculture and manufacturing country.

The importance of grain size and its control in wrought brass needs no lengthy discussion, since specifications so often make exact control imperative. Aids to this control are therefore of interest. The effect of a number of different elements on the grain growth of brass under various conditions of annealing has been reported in the technical literature. In particular, a paper by Cook and Miller1 a few years ago, with the discussion that followed, gave valuable information on the effects of iron, phosphorus, manganese, aluminum, aluminum plus nickel, and aluminum plus silicon. Price12 in his discussion of that paper, added a description of some commercial brasses that exhibited a grain-refining effect owing to the presence of 2 per cent A1 and 1 per cent Ni. Gibson and Doss3 have recently given data on the effect of iron on annealing high brass. No comprehensive study, however, has been given to the effect of additions of chromium. It has been the purpose of this investigation to determine the effect of adding various amounts of chromium to a plain cartridge brass, particularly in regard to the effect on grain growth in various annealing treatments after cold-working. Prepakation of Alloys Alloys of high-purity brass of 68.5 Cu, 31.5 Zn composition were made containing from 0 to 0.17 per cent Cr. These were produced in induction furnaces, using unlined graphite crucibles to hold the charge. The melts were cast into rectangular chill molds giving ingots about % by 3 by 10 in. in size.

JUST as I have taught you to refine silver in a small way and to make assays, so now I wish to teach you how to make cupeling hearths in place of these little cupels when you have silver in large quantities. This is done in four ways, as I have seen, but all are alike in the end and differ very little one from the other. There are some who make use of a furnace with a vault built with bricks above the cupeling hearth. There are some others who use in place of this an iron hood like a large cover. There are some others who use only heavy dry sticks of oak or some other thick wood. Others have certain long plates of terra cotta that cover the whole hearth in three or four pieces; the two of these that adjoin have [56] a hole in the middle that leads exactly into the middle of the cupeling hearth, and through this they put in the material and the lead, according to the practice I shall describe.

The key to successful liquid-liquid extraction is the solvent. First, and most important, it must be highly selective for the metal desired and yet reject other metal ions present; second, the ideal sol- vent is completely insoluble in the aqueous feed liquor; third, it has rapid phase separation and will not form emulsions; and, fourth, low cost is desirable, since losses occur even though the solvent is recycled. For this application a solvent known as DDPA (dodecyl phosphoric acid) was chosen since it closely met these requirements. DDPA is a long-chain alkyl phosphate developed for AEC by Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Dow Chemical Co., and the U. S. Bureau of Mines. The long chain contributes to low solubility in the aqueous phase and to high extracting power from acidic sulfate solutions, whereas the alkyl phosphates generally exhibit high selectivity for uranium solutions.

I wish to present to you a few thoughts on some of the phenomena and laws of iron smelting. Owing to the great complexity of the subject, to the great variety of points to be taken into consideration, many of which are very poorly understood, and to the meagreness and even conflictoriness of our information with regard to some of the most important laws which govern the subject, the fruits of such thoughts as I venture to offer you must be received as speculations, not as facts. Nevertheless, in discussing old phenomena from new standpoints, thus furnishing a metallurgical parallax, if I may say so, these theoretical speculations may have their value in helping to a clearer comprehension of the phenomena and laws we now know, and in suggesting new lines of inquiry. While an increase of height in blast furnaces is not always followed by increase in their power of production, experience proves that it tends to increase it; for while we have many cases of short furnaces producing more iron than longer ones, yet enormous productions, such as those of the Lucy and Isabella furnaces of Pittsburgh, and of the furnaces of Esch sur l'Alzette, in Luxembourg, have never been reached in short furnaces. We may safely infer that height is an element essential to great production, though of course not the only essential element, and that, in the case of high furnaces which are not capable of great production, some other essential element is wanting. Moreover, experience teaches that within limits increase of height tends to increase the producing power in a still higher ratio. This paper offers for consideration certain somewhat radical modifications in the iron-carbon diagram, these modifications being the result of the presence of notable amounts of alloying elements. When only small amounts of alloys are present, the standard iron-carbon diagram (Fig. 1) can be used with but insignificant changes; when larger amounts of alloys are present, however, it assumes a distinctly altered appearance. No comment is offered for the present except to call attention to the delta area, A4BM, which represents a region of mixtures of austenite and delta iron, just as area A3SP represents mixtures of austenite and alpha iron.
