The surface tensions of liquid chromium and manganese were determined by a modification of the dynamic drop-weight method and found to be, respectively, 1700 * 50 and 1100 * 50 dynes per cm at their melting points. Molten drops were formed LITTLE is known about the surface tension of liquid chromium and manganese, even though they are technologically important metals and widely used in steelmaking. In the past, direct determinations have been hampered by their high reactivity on the lower end of a vertically held rod inductively heated under argon. The technique essentially reproduced surface tensions reported for liquid nickel and zirconium using static drop-shape methods. and vapor pressure. In this work, surface tensions were measured by the drop-weight method, using induction heating under argon. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Chemical analyses of rods used are given in Table I. Chromium rods were prepared from iodide-process crystals which had been are-melted, hot-extruded, warm-swaged, and centerless-ground.'

In connection with the reduction of hematite or magnetite to metallic iron, it appeared desirable to study the rate of reduction of each oxide to the next lower oxide under conditions which excluded all other condensed phases. For this purpose, pellets of Fe,O,, Fe,O,, and oFeOo were prepared. A gas train for the preparation of Ar-Hz-H20 mixtures was employed to establish a continuous flow of a controlled atmosphere over a pellet suspended on a balance. In this manner the following individual reduction steps could be studied: For example, pellets of hematite were reduced solely to magnetite by adjusting the gas atmosphere such that it was oxidizing to wustite. In other words, the reaction was complete when the hematite pellet had been totally converted to magnetite. The pellets were prepared from Baker Chemical ferric oxide. The ferric oxide powder was moistened and handrolled. Air sintering at 950°C produced Fe,0, pellets with a density of 3.65 g per cm3. The pellets ranged in size from 0.6 to 1.2 cm diam. GROWING use of basic slag in the agricultural industry is of special interest and importance to the iron and steel industry of the Birmingham district, providing an increasing outlet for this by- product. Such use of basic slag was first developed in England about fifty years ago where it soon became wide- spread. About twenty years ago the Tennessee Coal, Iron & R. R. Co. began its production in the United States after exhaustive tests had demonstrated its high value here as in Eng- land. It is particularly valuable on heavy clay and acid soils, improving their physical condition, increasing their alkalinity where that is desirable, and providing soluble phosphate and small amounts of manganese to soils deficient in these respects. Its use in agriculture is growing as its advantages are becoming more widely known.

MINING men in general- are a roving lot but not so Selwyn G. Blaylock. Immediately after graduation from McGill in 1899 he went to the Trail smelter and he is there today though he spent three or four years of his early professional life at other British Columbia mining centers. Either he sensed the great possibilities of the company of which he is now vice-president and general manager, or it sensed his; more probably both. Certainly the association was a happy and fortunate one.

Marco Polo brought the first borax to Europe late in the 13th century. It was especially treasured then for one of its many qualities-that of working with gold as a soldering flux. Georgius Agricola in 1556 gave it the name chrysocolla (which the Moors called borax)-literally, "gold glue." Deposits of borax have been elusive and widely scattered-first found only in Tibet and Italy, and, in 1836, at Iquiqui, Chile. Dr. John Veatch made the first California discovery in 1856 while examining a mineral spring east of Red Bluff. This "Borax Lake" soon supplied 90% of U.S. demand, but flooding and other production problems caused the scene to shift from Borax Lake to Little Borax Lake and then to Nevada in 1871. Early transportation was by "Twenty-Mule Teams."

The White River Shale Project has completed a 5,000-foot production decline and a 30-foot diameter 1,010-foot deep shaft into its oil shale orebody in the Uinta Basin of eastern Utah. This is the first major underground access into these Green River deposits in this basin and provides an opportunity to establish and monitor in-situ rock mechanics stations as input to the mine engineering and planning of this large opening, high-tonnage mine. This paper discusses the history, mine development, and rock mechanics planning for this project.

The competitive position of producers of industrial minerals depends upon the delivered price of their product. Freight charges are a major factor in the sales to consumers. A comparison of freight rates on movements of limestone and silica rock in the Pacific North-west shows a wide variance in mills per ton mile for like hauls, thereby favoring some localities over others.

An electrolytic zinc plant with a capacity of 90,000 tons/year went on stream in Kokkola, Finland, in late 1969. It is a standard electrolytic zinc process plant; however, it has been subjected to several process improvements and enlargements during its time of operation. A fluidized bed roaster treats 500 tons/day of zinc concentrates which also contain mercury. Since the mercury evaporates completely in the roasting process, a mercury removal unit has been added to prevent, contamination of sulphuric acid produced in the neighbouring acid plant. The same unit also removes selenium from the roaster gases. In a separate unit, about 6 tons a year of metallic 99.999% mercury is recovered. The neutral leaching, originally a batch process, has been converted to a continuous operation, and a residue treatment system comprising hot acid leaching and jarosite precipitation has been added. Purification comprises a "hot arsenic-zinc dust" step and a cadmium removal step with zinc dust, both operated batchwise. Purification residues are used to make about 200 tons/ year of 99.99570 cadmium in a process developed by Outokumpu Oy. The electrolytic precipitation of zinc carried out at medium current density gives zinc of 99. 995% purity.

A full survey of the laboratory and blast furnace tests carried out on two types of acid pellets is given. From the lab tests it appears that type B has a better low temperature disintegration index and a lower reducibility index than type A. The chemical composition and swelling indexes do not differ for both types. From the blast furnace test periods, carried out with a charge of 45% of pellets and 45% of sinter, it follows that both types of pellets lead to the same pig-iron production, blast furnace permeability, and blast furnace dust production. It also can be concluded that type B pellets cause a significantly higher coke consumption.

THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 395x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is 1/4xO-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed.
