Vapor transport experiments have been carried out in order to determine the saturation solubility of carbon in cobalt and nickel with respect to graphite over a large temperature range. Some of the uncertainty existing in the thermodynamics of these systems has been removed and accurate estimates of the heat and entropy of solution of carbon in nickel and cobalt have been deduced. The relatitle partial entropies of carbon are considered to be predominantly vibrational in origin. ALTHOUGH the thermodynamic properties of solid solutions of carbon in cobalt and in nickel have been investigated previously, the results of these investigations show a marked lack of agreement amongst themselves. In this investigation simple vapor transport experiments have been undertaken in order to measure the temperature variation of the saturation solubility of carbon in nickel and cobalt with the object of removing to some degree the uncertainties in the thermodynamics of these systems. In the case of the C-Co system, early measurements of the saturation solubility of graphite in Co show results at the same temperature differing by almost an order of magnitude.1-5 Recently Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert6 measured the equilibrium between CH4-H2 mixtures and C-Co solid solutions at five temperatures ranging from 850° to 1050°C. Their values of the activity of carbon in the solid solution, deduced from a knowledge of the chemical potential of carbon atoms in the gas, varies linearly with composition at each temperature and the authors concluded that the solutions were Henryan. The saturation solubilities deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's measurements are in good agreement with the solubility determined at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson7 and the value at 1000°C deduced from the measurements of smith8 on the equilibrium between CO/CO2 mixtures and C-Co solutions. The object of this investigation was to check the results of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert and also to extend the range of solubility data to higher temperatures. In the case of the C-Ni system, there is fairly good agreement between the values given by schaefer9 for the saturation solubility of carbon C, in nickel, the value given at 1000°C by Rao and Nicholson,7 and that deduced from Smith's8 measurements of the equilibrium between C-Ni solutions and CO/CO2 mixtures at 1000°C. The values of C, deduced from Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's6 measurements of the carbon activity in nickel are also in fairly good agreement. However, there is a large discrepancy between the above set of measurements and those of Lander, Kern, and Beach," who measured the carbon solubility of nickel in equilibrium with graphite by depositing an excess of graphite on the surface of Ni-foils from a gaseous mixture and subsequently diffusing in the carbon. These results are considerably higher than those mentioned above. The determinations6 of carbon activity a, in nickel from the CH4-H2 equilibrium showed that at all the temperatures investigated, the ac-values varied linearly with concentration up to about a, = 0.6 and then began to increase with concentration much more rapidly. On the basis of auxiliary experiments in which C-Ni solutions were equilibrated with graphite, Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert concluded that their CH4-H2 solid equilibrations at high values of a, were spurious and a, behaved linearly with composition up to the saturation limit (a, = 1). The short linear extrapolations of Schenck, Frohberg, and Jaspert's a, data yield values of C, in good agreement with those of Lander, Kern, and Beach." The solubility data for nickel discussed here is presented in Fig. 1 in the form of plots of ln[Cc/(l - 2cc)] vs 1/T. The discrepancies mentioned are clearly seen. A cathode sputtering technique is described which elin7inates the need for ultrahigh vacuum in preparing thin films of materials sensitive to gaseous impurities. This technique uses a fraction of the atoms sputtering within an anode container to getter actice gases, such as HzO, Oz, and Nz. The gases alzd gettering metal are deposited on the container walls, thus shielding the coating zone of the system from contamination. The use of the method for preparing superconducting-normal metal couples such as Ph-Cu and Ph-Pt is described, and the properties of the individual and composite films are given and discussed. GETTER sputtering is a method which greatly simplifies the preparation of thin films in cases where composition control is critical. A major difficulty with conventional sputtering and other vacuum-deposition techniques is the contamination of the forming film caused by residual gases, such as H20, CO, Oz, and Nz, in the coating equipment. The difficulty arises from the fact that even when the residual pressure in the system is as low as 1 x 10"6 Torr, with a deposition rate of 10A per sec, there are as many contaminating gas collisions with the substrate as there are with film-forming metallic atoms. It is not surprising, therefore, that with reactive metals, such as tantalum and niobium or with semiconductors, such as silicon and germanium, films with properties far different from the starting materials are obtained. In the case of niobium and tantalum, deposited either by sputtering or vacuum evaporation in systems with reactive gases at pressures of the order of 1 x l0-' Torr, the loss of superconductivity is traceable to interstial oxygen or nitrogen. On the other hand, working in vacuum of the order of 1 x l0-" Torr, Marchand and enema' have shown that superconducting films of tantalum with properties approaching those of bulk material are possible. At this level of gaseous impurities -lo6 metallic atoms arrive at the substrate before a contaminating collision occurs again assuming a deposition rate of 10A per sec. It is evident from the above that any successful vacuum technique requires the elimination of reactive gases from the region of the system where coating is occurring. Getter sputtering accomplishes this using conventional vacuum equipment with residual pressures in the 106 Torr range. In fact? vacuum systems with residual pressures of lo-" Torr are adequate for most purposes. With this method, sputtering is confined within an anode can and, by geometric design, sputtering itself is used to purify the argon at the lower and upper parts of the system by the gettering action of the reactive metal. In consequence, the central region of the system where coating occurs is shielded from gaseous contamination. Getter sputtering is particularly useful for the preparation of alloy and compound films. With this method, if a cathode of homogeneous composition is bombarded with high-energy argon ions, transfer of material to the substrate having the same composition as the cathode will occur. This is true after an initial equilibration time, even though the constituents of the cathode may have different sputtering rates. During equilibration, the surface of the cathode changes composition due to differences in sputtering rate, but mass conservation demands a steady-state condition such that the atoms sputtered from the surface have the same composition as the cathode material from which the surface is generated. The: mysterious Lake Erie price for iron ore, established each spring, determines the maximum price that will be paid during the following season for ore of Mesabi Non-Bessemer base grade. This price is important to the ore producers, hut since most of the ore in the Lake Superior district is owned or controlled by consuming interests, the really important question to them is not the price of ore but how much it will cost them to mine and transport their season's requirements to their furnace plants. However, a few million tons are actually sold each year, and considerable quantities are traded for mixing purposes, and the negotiations lor these sales and trades usually begin with some reference to the Lake Erie price. There is no difficulty with the Lake Erie price itself or with the manner in which it is established, but the system prescribed for determining the values of ores that are not exactly base grade is incomplete. The Lake Erie price takes into consideration only the iron and phosphorus contained in the ore, but when the ore producer is negotiating a sale or trade, he is confronted by the fact that his ore must he studied and the price adjusted, not only on the basis of the iron and phosphorus analyses, as specified by the Lake Erie price, but also on the basis of silica! alumina, manganese, structure, etc. The vague and unsatisfactory methods used in making these adjustments bear some relation to the manner in which the ore is supposed to act in the blast furnace. The ore producer may not understand all of the idiosyncrasies of the blast furnace, but if the smelting-plant operators have a system more accurate than the Lake Erie price method for determining the relative values of different ores, why not pass this information on to the ore producers, so that they can make use of it and perhaps modify their practice in such a manner as to benefit both themselves and their customers? There is a lack of understanding and appreciation between these two groups that may, to some extent, be unavoidable, but in the interests of efficiency and conservation rules that are more accurate and complete than the Lake Erie price method in use at the present time should be established for the guidance of the ore producers. Recently a paper was read before the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, by Mr. G. W. Hewitt, Manager Production, Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Department, Wheeling Steel Corporation, in which he explained how his company determines the relative values of different grades of Non-Bessemer ore. This is a very important paper, perhaps not so much on account of the actual calculation methods described as because of the fact that premiums and penalties are shown on Non-Bessemer ores for silica, alumina, phosphorus, and manganese. Measurements of the amount of water flowing in many of the larger rivers of the west have been made by the United States Geological Survey, and by this means the daily discharges of these rivers have been computed for a period of over two years. These measurements have been confined mainly to that part of the country commonly known as the arid region, where the rainfall is insufficient for the needs of plants most useful to man, and the supply of water, not only for agriculture, but also for mining and all other purposes, falls below the demands made upon it. In such localities flowing water has a great value, for without it many industries are impossible. Experience has shown that in the western part of the United States, over an area a little less than two-fifths of the whole extent of the country, there are great bodies of fertile land enjoying a genial climate, and in every way adapted to the support of a large population, except in the one particular of water-supply. By utilizing the water available, portions of this rich land can be rendered valnable. In other words, the laud-values rest directly upon the prospects of a continuous artificial water-supply. The same is true of many mineral lands, which require for hydraulic mining, or for the supply of concentrating-works, stanip-mills, etc., a certain water-supply, and are impaired in value if this supply is inadequate or irregular. The pressure of this need upon the mining industry is not so widespread, or in the first instance so severe as upon agriculture; but as different regions become more thickly settled, and the two industries compete for a water-supply not sufficient for both, it, is probable that the miner will suffer. But he can snspend operations with less inconvenience than the farmer. Agricuitural land, if the watersupply is not continuous, becomes a desert; on the other hand, the profit of mining is greatly enhanced by the presence of agricultural

This paper describes a numerical mathematical model of the steamflood process that depends on fewer restrictive assumptions than models previously reported. The solution, however, is obtained economically. Example calculations are presented that, on comparison with experimental results, tend to validate the model. Results that expose certain process mechanics are discussed. The model describes the simultaneous flow of three phases — oil, water and gas — in one dimension. It includes the effects of three-phase relative permeabilities, capillary pressure, and temperature- and pressure - dependent fluid properties. Interphase mass transfer of water-steam is allowed, but the oil is assumed nonvolatile and the hydrocarbon gas insoluble in the liquid phases. The model allows heat convection in one dimension and two-dimensional heat conduction in a vertical cross-section spanning the oil sand and adjacent strata. The hydrocarbon-steam gas composition is tracked, but the effect of gas composition on water-steam phase behavior is neglected. The model is solved numerically in three separate stages. The three-phase mass balances are solved simultaneously using Newtonian iteration on nonlinearities occurring in the accumulation terms. The energy balance is solved separately by noniterative application of the alternating-direction implicit procedure. Separate solution of the composition balance is accomplished by straightforward solution of the finite difference equations. The method of effecting nonsimultaneous, stable solution of the mass and energy balances is the key to the success of the model. INTRODUCTION Mathematical tools as well as laboratory and field experiments are necessary to help us understand the complex steamflood process. A mathematical model can expose process mechanics and show the relative importance of process variables, but this ability is often limited by restrictive assumptions. Most known models of steam processes,l-5 with the exception of the model of Gottfried,6 are "simplified" in that they involve analytic approximations and require many restrictive assumptions. The primary utility of these methods lies in the routine use as an aid in engineering design. By contrast, the comprehensive model presented here is numerical and requires far fewer restrictive assumptions. It finds its primary utility as a research tool. It serves as an aid in understanding the nature of the process, in interpreting laboratory experiments and in evaluating and developing simpler mathematical models for engineering design. The major reason why previously presented models have been confined to the "simplified" class is evidenced by the one published exception. In 1965, Gottfried6 presented a numerical model for the combustion process of which the steam process is a subset. The result is a comprehensive tool (though it neglects capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction) that is troubled with convergence problems and that requires 2 to 3 hours of IBM 7094 time to complete a calculation. Though our present model does not simulate combustion, it does consider capillarity and two-dimensional heat conduction and it overcomes the convergence and computer-time problems. MATHEMATICAL DESCRIPTION OF STEAMFLOODING FLUID FLOW The equations employed to describe three-phase fluid flow are of a familiar form. For a number of years many attempts have been made to use thermit in order to do away with piping in ingots. Some of these attempts were successful, while others did not give the expected results. Nearly every plant had its own method of using the thermit, and no special care was taken to study the results or to find the causes for lack of success. Formerly the principle of the process was to decrease the piping by introducing a can filled with thermit, attached to an iron rod, into the head of the ingot directly after it had been poured. In this case the thermit reaction took place in the upper part of the ingot, and it was thought that through the heat produced the head would keep liquid longer and piping thus be reduced. In other words, the aim was to keep the head of the ingot open by making use of the heat of the thermit reaction, which would thereby give the gases in the steel sufficient time to escape. This result can be attained by the application of a large enough quantity of thermit, but it would not be economical in general practice, and could only he used for high-grade material. Many steel-makers abroad and in this country have had this experience. The Th. Goldschmidt A. G., Germany, has, therefore, made a special study of this question with the cooperation of a well-known steel company, and has worked out a new method for the application of thermit for this purpose. The results obtained have been most satisfactory and reliable, and this process is now used in Germany on a large scale in many prominent steel-works. In September I contributed an article upon Columbite in the Black Hills of Dakota to the American Journal of Science. I had not at that time seen the paper by Professor Charles A. Schaeffer, of Cornell University, upon the occurrence of tautalite in the same region," or I would have gladly made reference to it. His analysis, proving the entire thence of columbic acid, shows that the specimen he analyzed, at least, should be called tantalite, and not columbite, if the distinction between these two closely related species is to be maintained. It is hard to say where the line is to be drawn, in such cases, between two minerals, when the specific characters and the composition are so nearly the same. If the name is to be determined by the relative amounts of tantalic and columbic acids, what shall we call the mineral when these acids are present in nearly equal quantities? Preference was given in this case to the name columbite, for the reason that the specific gravity, as ascertained by the ordinary scales at command, was nearer 6 than 7. As Professor Schaeffer had only one fragment by post, while I had an abundance from many places, it may yet be found that columbic acid predominates in some of the specimens. I therefore use the name columbite or tantalite indifferently. With this explanation I proceed to give a few observations upon the occurrence of the mineral with the tin-ore of the Black Hills. There are two localities, especially, where the mineral is found in the same dike or vein as the cassiterite: 1. at the Etta mine; 2. at the Bob Ingersoll claim. At the Etta it occurs in close association with albite and feldspar in crystals from one to four or five inches broad, and from one-quarter of an inch to three inches thick. One of the most significant developments in the iron industry in recent years has been the discovery and opening of enormous reserves of low-grade ore in eastern and northeastern Cuba. The two principal fields are the Mayari and the Moa, situated on Nipe bag, in the Province of Oriente. A less well-known district of the same type is that of Baracoa, at the east of the island, and another is in Csmaguey Province in central Cuba. In the comprehensive estimates of the iron-ore reserves of the world, published during the summer of 1910 by the International Geological Congress in Sweden,' these Cuban deposits are estimated at about 2,000,000,000 tons. Certain it is that the reserve is a large one. The Spanish-American Iron Co., the Juragua Iron Co. (Bethlehem Steel Co.), the U. S. Steel Corporation, and others have been active in this exploration. The Spanish-American Iron Co. has established a port for the handling of these ores at Felton, has built a railway 16 miles to the ore-fields, and has operied up deposits for steam-shovel mining. Its expenditures have reached an aggregate of about $6,000,000 in preparation for the handling of these ores. Shipment of the ore to Sparrow's Point, Md., has begun and may be expected to rise to a considerable amount in the near future.

The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11 mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. All freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting.

The Hugoniot curves were determined for Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct (13 at. pct) Si. The pressure of the transition increased as the silicon content of the alloy increased. Single crystals of 2.9 wt pct Si-Fe were also studied. The pressure of the transition was not dependent on crystallo-graphic orientation. All of the Neumann bands (mechanical twins) were attributable to (112) planes but not all of the {112} planes showed twin markings. A thorough study of the iron Hugoniot (the relationship between specific volume and pressure) under plane wave shock loading revealed a pressure transition at about 130 kbar shock pressure. The results of this investigation were reported by Bancroft, Peterson, and inshall1 in 1956. At the time of this discovery, it was felt that this was probably the a, to y transition normally found in iron and many of its alloys. Subsequently a number of iron alloy systems were surveyed in which the alloying element has a considerable effect on the normal a, to y transformation. The influence of carbon and nickel and/or chromium have already been reported.2,3 At the present time, there appears to be some doubt that this pressure transition is the usual a, to y transition In this study, Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct (13 at. pct) Si were chosen for several reasons. To the present, the transition has been found only in iron-base alloys which were originally in the a, phase (bcc). Secondly, the y loop at atmospheric pressure extends to only about 2.5 wt pct Si. If the transition were a, to y, then one might expect a rather drastic pressure effect for alloys containing more than 2.5 wt pct Si. Finally, single crystals of Fe-Si alloys large enough for shock loading studies are readily available thereby making it quite easy to determine the effect of crystal orientation on the transition pressure and on the twinning behavior of the alloy. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Fe-Si alloys containing up to 7 wt pct Si were produced by normal vacuum casting procedures. Single crystals of Fe-2.9 wt pct Si were purchased from Monocrystals Co., Cleveland, Ohio. The orientations of these crystals were determined and samples cut so that the shock wave would be parallel (to within 1.5 deg) to either the (loo), (Ill), or (112) principal orientations. Three distinct experimental testing techniques were used. First, the pin technique, described elsewhere,4 was used to determine the transition pressure for the polycrystalline alloys as well as for the (111) and (112) orientations of the 2.9 wt pct Si single crystals. Secondly, the recovery studies, described in detail in an earlier paper,2 were used for determining the effect of alloy composition and crystal orientation on the plastic II compression-plastic I rarefaction interaction zone for several specific shock pressures. Finally, measurements of pressures above the two-wave threshold were made on the polycrystalline alloys so that more complete Hugoniot curves could be constructed for this alloy system. The optical techniques described by Rice et al.5 were used to measure the shock and free surface velocities of the samples from which the Hugoniot data were obtained. This method is applicable only in the single wave region, since velocities are obtained from the measured total transit times of the disturbances through measured sample thicknesses.

A more complete determination of the chromium-rich portion of the Cr-Ni phase diagram was made, based in part on resistivity measurements. The existence of a eutectoid reaction at 1215°C,made,based in addition to the previously reported eutectic reaction at 1343°C, was confirmed. Metallographic studies, lineal analysis, and diffusion-couple evidence were utilized to support Metallographicand extend the findings of the resistivity measurements. Delineation of the a chromium solvus line shows that the maximum solubility of nickel in a chromium decreases rapidly from 25 wt pct Ni at the eutectoid temperature to 16 wt pct. Ni at 950°C. IN recent years alloys of high chromium and nickel content have become of more interest as better performance of metals at higher temperatures is sought. It has become increasingly important, therefore, that the Cr-Ni binary diagram, which is composed of two of the elements commonly found in many high temperature alloys, be known more accurately. In particular, the chromium-rich portion of this diagram has for a long time remained incompletely determined and has been reported in the literature with a great deal of conflicting evidence. In general, electrolytic chromium of nominal purity was used by most of the earlier workers, who, except for Jenkins et al., made no further attempt to purify the metal. In the present redetermination of the chromium-rich portion of the Cr-Ni phase diagram, every effort was made to use the purest component metals available and to retain this purity throughout the preparation of the alloys and their subsequent handling. Early work by Voss, Bain," and Phebus and Blake4 indicated that the Ni-Cr binary diagram was a simple eutectic system with rather extensive terminal solid solutions. Later, Nishigori and Hamasumi," Tasaki, Weaver and Jellinghaus,' Matsunaga, and Jette, Nordstrom, Queneau, and Foote attempted to determine the limits of the phase fields. Except for Jette and coworkers, the other investigators agreed that the temperature of the eutectic reaction occurred between 1320" and 1340°C and at a composition of 50 or 51 pct Cr. There was, however, considerable disagreement as to the melting point of the chromium-rich alloys and the limits of the solid-solution fields. As a result of the studies of Jenkins et al., the liquidus and solidus curves up to 80 and 90 pct Cr, respectively, were outlined. In addition, the solid-solution phase fields at higher temperatures had been investigated and showed only two phases. The boundary of the chromium-rich a phase was not determined precisely according to these authors, but indications were that it tended to confirm the earlier work of Nishigori and Hamasumi. A more recent investigation by Taylor and Floyd,'" using X-ray methods, essentially corroborated the diagrams proposed by Jenkins et al., and by Wise and Eash (see Fig. 1). Again, no indication of a third phase in the chromium-rich portion of the diagram appeared. The earlier observations, however, are not substantiated by the modifications to the Ni-Cr binary diagram proposed by Bloom and Grant." THE production of sand in an oil well increases operating costs because of abnormal wear in subsurface equipment, the necessity for frequent cleanouts, and the need for a means of disposing of the sand. Moreover, removal of sand from the zone can bring about the creation of cavities from which bodies of formation, sand or shale, may slough into the hole, endangering the shutoff, impeding production or collapsing the liner. The procedure known as gravel packing is attracting attention as a means of controlling these factors and contributing to the productive life of a well. That gravel packing is now substantially beyond the preliminary stage on the Pacific Coast is reflected in the 191,000 bbl, of oil produced monthly by the 66 gravel-packed wells in 11 different producing sectors. REASONS FOR GRAVEL-PACKING Gravel packing, if properly carried out, can be expected to provide the following benefits: 1. Prevent the movement of sand and thus eliminate sand production and sand fills, and prevent the formation of cavities. 2. Provide a practical, relatively inexpensive, large-diameter hole, which will provide well-known theoretical advantages. 3. Support the walls of the hole by completely filling the space between the liner and the formation, regardless of its irregularities, and afford a support for liners. 4. Provide for more efficient pumping operations in wells by: (a) possibly utilizing the gravel as a gas trap in pumping gaseous fluids, (b). allowing deep submergence of the pump into the oil zone.

The mineral gypsum, CaSO4 + 2 H2O, has been used for many years as a sulphurizing and basic flux in several smelting-operations. Thus, in smelting oxide nickel-ore in the blastfurnace, it is commonly added to the charge to furnish the sulphur necessary for collecting the metal in a matte, and a base for slagging the siliceous gangue. In the concentration of lead-copper matte in the reverberatory furnace it has been used for years at Preiberg, Saxony,1 for a similar purpose, and for producing at the same time a copper-matte with less than 0.15 per cent. of Fe. The latest use gypsum has been put to is in the blast-roasting process of Carmichael-Bradford.2 The term " blast-roasting," given by A. S. Dwight3 to the Dwight-Lloyd method of roasting and agglomerating: is a happy generic term which covers the ground better than the " lime-roasting " of Ingalls5 or the " pot-roasting " of Austin: in that it leaves the operation independent of the character of the flux and the form of apparatus, and retains the characteristic feature of this class of processes—namely, that of using forced draft. In the Carmichael-Bradford process the dehydrated material, mixed with galena-concentrate, acts as a diluent and a flux. The process differs in this from the Huntington-Heberlein7 and the Savelsberg8 processes, in both of which limestone is used.

IN 1943 the petroleum industry completed a series of practical adjustments to the acute problems which dominated the scene a year earlier. The crisis in petroleum transportation from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast was met by the completion of overland pipe lines supplementing emergency haulage by tank car so pressure on consumers along the Atlantic Seaboard was appreciably relieved. Later in the year when the western Atlantic was largely cleared of submarines, the sharp reduction in the hazards of marine transportation permitted the resumption of coastwise traffic and imports from South America. Nationwide restrictions in the use of gasoline and fuel oils became necessary as military demands for all petroleum products mounted to high levels.

The term solution loss is discussed and defined. Examples are given showing that solution loss may either have a favorable or unfavorable effect on blast furnace performance. A theory is advanced explaining the contradictions encountered during earlier studies of the problem. MANY papers have been written and numerous theories advanced concerning the chemical reactions in the iron blast furnace. Richards, discussing the utilization of fuel in the blast furnace, said: "All the carbon burnt in the furnace should be first oxidized at the tuyeres to CO and all the reduction of oxides above the tuyeres should be caused by CO, which thus becomes CO,. This dictum is not Gruner's own words, but expresses their sense, and from the point of view of the present discussion, it is the correct principle upon which to obtain the maximum generation of heat in the furnace from a given weight of fuel." Richards also said the cubic feet of wind per pound of coke does not express how efficiently a furnace is running, but it will be shown later where Howland paid much attention to this figure. Richards pointed out a shortcoming of Grun-er's discussion in that Richards claimed there is not enough CO generated in a good working blast furnace to possibly combine with the oxygen of the ore, so some of it must be reduced by solid carbon. Mathesius2 made two important contributions. First, he wrote the direct and indirect reduction equations showing the heats of formation in each case and stressed that the indirect reduction reaction produces heat while direct reduction absorbs heat. Secondly, he substantiated Richards' conclusion that there may be a deficiency of CO gas and that some direct reduction is required, but he pointed out that "direct reduction in the hearth has often been confused with direct reduction in the stack, which more correctly should be termed 'premature combustion'." Then he said that "as this carbon is consumed partly by economical (direct reduction in the hearth) and partly by wasteful reactions in ever varying proportions, it is evident that the relation of this total carbon gasified above the tuyeres to the fuel consumption of a furnace cannot possibly have a direct bearing on the economy of furnace operation. The premature combustion of carbon (CO2+C?2CO) must therefore in all cases be considered a detrimental reaction." Johnson3 discussed this whole problem. Through experience Johnson found that when departure from Gruner's ideal working is considerable, the fuel economy is poor, and when the quantity of blast goes up, the fuel economy goes up in the same proportion. Johnson said that the wind per pound of coke is a measure of fuel economy, which will be shown to be wrong. Howland4 established the fact from operating data that there was no relationship between the coke consumption of a furnace and the percentage of coke burned at the tuyeres. But some of his calculations have led to questionable conclusions, such as "it is practically impossible to obtain low coke consumption unless we keep our wind low." Howland made an important contribution when, in his concluding paragraphs, he reached certain negative decisions as to why one coke works better than another. He said the reason one coke works better than another in a blast furnace is not because: 1—there is any difference in the percentage gasified at the tuyeres, or 2—there is any difference of wind required per pound of coke. Korevaar5 propounded a new theory on combustion which disagrees with Gruner because "as far as we can see, this is sufficient proof for the invalidity of Gruner's ideal, for if it was valid, the Low coke consumption should always be accompanied by a higher percentage of carbon burned at the tuyeres. This not being the case, we must deliberately give up our belief in Gruner's ideal." The part in italics will be proved to be wrong. Martin" contended that there was not enough reducing capacity in the blast furnace unless solution loss occurs. He came to a series of conclusions, such as: 1—The greatest efficiency of the blast furnace may not be attained when the reduction is performed entirely by carbon monoxide as demanded by Gruner's definition of the ideally perfect working of the blast furnace. 2—The so-called solution loss reactions, which should more properly be termed direct reduction reactions, promote furnace efficiency. 3—In modern blast furnace practice, the carbon consumption of the process is determined primarily by the carbon needed for reduction purposes, any thermal deficiency created by the reduction process being balanced in practice by the use of blast heat. From a practical standpoint further discussion of the theory of chemical reactions is of little moment. There is however one phase of the general theory of chemical reactions which is very important and that is the combustion of coke in the blast furnace. There is no question as to the importance of the part played by the retort in modern zinc smelting. A satisfactory retort should have properties that will result in resistance to slagging action and fire cracks, and have no tendency, or at least only a small tendency, to soften and bend under furnace heat. The life and cost of a retort also are extremely important factors. The trend in zinc smelting during the past few years has been toward longer retorts and .higher charge density. This is caused by the fact that the diameter is limited to 9 or 10 in. because of heat penetration difficulties in larger sizes. Consequently, increasing the length of the retort and density of charge offers the only practical means of increasing the amount of zinc produced per retort. The stiff-ness of a retort perhaps is the most important factor, as slag accumulates in the bottom of a retort which has sagged and very quickly cuts through, often ruining the retorts below. The development of the high-silica retort is a result of the demands made by the trend toward heavy charges. Materials Used for High-silica Retorts The materials used in the manufacture of high-silica retorts at East St. Louis are fireclay, grog and silica flour. Analyses are given in Table 1. The fireclay comes from the St. Louis district. The grog consists of clean firebrick culls, and the silica flour, a very high-grade material, is purchased in the form of a flour that has been ground through 140 mesh.

(communication to the Secretary*):—Doubtless all engineers who have paid more than a casual visit to Russia have come into contact with that formidable document, the " smieta," or estimate of the Russian manager. It is an institution which seems to be inseparable from Russian mining-methods. As Mr. Shockley points out, the year's costs a agree very closely" with the figures of the smieta made at the beginning of the year. In cases which have come under my notice, I have been satisfied that there had been a good deal of " rigging" of accounts to this end. The sum spent by the manager was carefully kept down to the total of the estimate, because it was well known that no more money would be forthcoming, and when this is done it is not a difficult matter to see that the right amounts come under the right heads in the final accounts. I do not say that this is always the case, but I have come across notable instances. Looking at it from the Russian owner's point of view, I think that the balance of the argument is usually in favor of the smieta as limiting " impulsive indiscretion" on the part of managers. The Russian Mining Code of to-day leaves much to be desired, but this is thoroughly appreciated by the official world there, and great changes are spoken of for the future. In many, if not in most, cases the laws are interpreted liberally, and a great deal is left to the discretion of the district mining engineer or inspector, with whom it is necessary to keep in close touch. As Mr. Shockley points out, the officials of a mine, who are always Russians, are held personally responsible for accidents resulting to employees, quite independently of any compensation which may be made to the sufferer. This seems startling enough, but I have always found that a penalty is imposed only

The Texas Gulf Coast had a rather disappointing year in the type of oil fields found. Although 17 fields were found in the area during the year, as against 21 fields in 1938, no field of major proportion was discovered. Of these 17 fields, 11 were oil fields, 4 were gas and distillate fields, and 2 were gas fields. The wildcat activity for the year resulted in about 400 dry holes, although probably 10 per cent of these were edge wells close to proved areas. During the year, 1455 oil and gas wells were completed as compared to 1637 wells in 1938, a decrease of 11 per cent. Production for the Texas Gulf Coast area for the year was 100,253,937 bbl. as against 92,530,467 bbl. produced in 1938, an increase of 8 per cent. The daily average production was 274,668 bbl. for the 365 days in the year, although only 252 producing days were allowed by the Railroad Commission; that is, 69 per cent of the time as compared to 71 days shut in for 80 per cent of the time producing in 1938. The total number of oil and distillate wells producing at the end of 1939 was 9495 as against 8451 at the end of 1938—an increase of 1044 wells, or 12 per cent. Of these wells, 6547 were flowing and 2948 pumping, or 69 per cent flowing. At the end of the previous year, 66 per cent of the wells were flowing. New Fields Angleton, Brazoria County.—The Angleton field was discovered by the completion of Glen McCarthy's No. 1 Carr in October for an initial production of 180 bbl. a day of 50" gravity oil through 11/64-in. choke with 3400 Ib. on tubing. The field is 1½ miles east of the town of Anchor. The discovery undoubtedly can be credited to the reflection seismograph, since several companies worked the area from 1933 onward with this type of exploration. The principal block was taken by the Humble company in 1934. Two deep holes by Humble revealed the presence of structure, although both were dry. The Humble and Sun companies later contributed money and acreage toward the drilling of the discovery well. The production is from a sand in the Frio, about 1700 ft.
