A knowledge of the mutual liquid solubility of zinc and lead is of importance in various phases of zinc metallurgy. The determination of this solubility has been the subject of numerous investigations, but unfortunately the results vary widely, particularly at higher temperatures, and it has been impossible to decide what data are most reliable. It was decided to investigate the matter and in view of the disagreement in the published results, it was felt necessary to take rather unusual precautions to insure the reliability of the data. For this reason determinations were made by four different methods, and the procedures of several of the previous investigators were duplicated. The previously used methods can be divided into two classes: methods involving freezing the entire melt and taking samples of the lead-rich and zine-rich phases in the solid state,l,2 and methods in which the samples are taken while the bath is liquid and at the desired temperature.3,4 Data obtained by methods involving freezing the entire melt show much lower solubility of lead in zinc than methods in which the liquid is sampled at temperature. The latter method was used by Spring and Romanoff5 and by Hass and Jellinek.6 The results of these two investigations are in agreement at temperatures near the melting point but at higher temperatures Hass and Jellinek find a higher mutual solubility. The low-temperature section of the zinc-lead equilibrium diagram is given by Peirce and Anderson.7 The diagram is based on the data of Hodge and Heyer,8 Arnemann,9 and Peirce.10

SOME years ago we collated all laboratory data then available to us on the distribution at equilibrium of manganese and of sulphur between metal and simple slags, and used the results in setting up an equation, which proved to be in accord with determinations of the distribution ratio of manganese and of sulphur between liquid steel and open-hearth slag, over a wide range of operating conditions. We now present an outline of our calculations and inferences on these two closely related questions, which are of especial importance because of the advisability of conserving manganese wherever possible. In general, our results show that in the open-hearth furnace equilibrium between metal and slag, with respect to both manganese and sulphur, is substantially attained during the finishing period of the heat, or in about a half hour to an hour after any additions were made. This implies that the end result will be identical whether manganese is added as alloy or metal to the liquid steel or as oxide to the slag. The proportion of total manganese retained by the steel is favored: (I) by use of the minimum amount of lime, consistent with other operating limitations, required to give a lime-silica ratio of about 2.4, which usually corresponds to a minimum practical slag volume; (2) by a high concentration in the slag of MnO relative to FeO; (3) by high operating temperature. Absorption of sulphur by the slag from the liquid metal is favored: (I) by large slag volume; (2 by a high concentration of active (or "free") lime and of manganese oxide dis) solved in the slag; (3) by low concentration of silica, iron oxide, and phosphate dissolved in the slag. The activity of each of the several components, although it is not known precisely, is approximately equal to the concentration of each component expressed as its mol fraction; that is, as the ratio of the number of mols of the given component to the total number of mols of all the molecular species present in the metal or slag, as the case may be. Single crystals of copper and silicon-iron were cold rolled in orientations chosen to produce individually the major components of the poly crystalline deformation texture. The orientation dependence of the recrystallization kinetics was studied relative to the primary recrystallization textures of these specimens. It is not possible to rationalize the poly crystalline re crystallized textures on this basis. The results suggest an important role of the interaction of adjacent crystals during the deformation of aggregates. BRICK and Williamson1 first noted evidence that the recrystallization temperature was different for straight-rolled and cross-rolled copper given comparable reductions. Michalak and Hibbard2 investigated quantitatively the effect of rolling procedure on the kinetics of recrystallization of cold-rolled copper and found that material cold-rolled the same amount by straight-pass, cross-pass, and compression-pass techniques developed different deformation and recrystallization textures, different 1-hr recrystallization temperatures, and different recrystallization kinetics. However, the temperature dependence of the rate of recrystallization was essentially the same for all techniques. Similar results were obtained on iron. Dunn and Koh3 in studying the recrystallization textures of cold-rolled silicon-iron single crystals reported large differences in the annealing temperatures and times required to recrystallize specimens of different orientations cold-rolled the same amount. Liu4 and Liu and Hibbard5 utilized the concept of different recrystallization temperatures for different orientations of cold-rolled crystals to rationalize the difference in recrystallization textures found in various face-centered-cubic metals. Their explanation predicted a significant difference in the recrystallization kinetics of deformed (110) [112] crystals as compared to (358) [352] crystals, and, in fact, Liu4 reported evidence that this difference existed at least qualitatively. Verbraak6 who rolled and recrystallized a series of copper single crystals found that the double (112) [111] rolled orientation is related to recrystallized cube texture formation. The effect of rolling intensity on the relative amount of cube component suggests an important role of recrystallization kinetics. Walter and Hibbard7 while trying to relate the behavior of rolled and recrystallized single crystals of silicon-iron to the behavior of polycrystal-line silicon-iron again noted that differences in recrystallization kinetics were necessary to rationalize their results. The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain quantitative kinetic data on the recrystallization of single crystals of both copper and silicon-iron rolled to initial isolated individual orientations corresponding to those found in the polycrystalline deformation textures. These data might indicate the importance of the deformation orientation, i.e. the range of available nuclei, the deformed matrix orientation into which these nuclei grow, and the orientation dependence of their growth rate during primary recrystallization on this texture. The problem of heat treating high-speed steel becomes more and more important as the design of cutters becomes more and more complicated in increasing the efficiency of mechanical operatioqs. Hundreds of dollars are spent in the design and manufacture of milling cutters of special form for rapid production of duplicate or interchangeable parts, and then, as the heat treatment is faulty on the one hand, or scientifically executed on the other, the tool fails after a few operations, or its efficiency is greatly increased. The practical operation of giving these complicated tools the right temperature necessary to bring out the best cutting qualities, and at the same time bring-the tool out "clean," is a difficult one and calls for no small amount of skill. In order to be on the safe side the average tool hardener uses a temperature much too low to give the best results with the high-speed steel he uses. In the case of cutters which are finished to a given diameter before hardening, it is impossible to grind the tool after hardening, so that it is essential that the surface be protected from oxidizing or de-carbonizing. It is the aim of this paper to describe some experiments on hardening high-speed stee1, in which metallographic means were used to determine the correct hardening tempcratures. The accompanying table and plates show the results of hardening experiments on five different high-speed steels. ALTHOUGH gold is one of the rarer metals, it is widely distributed; it is found on all of the continents and in each of the grand metallogenic provinces of the earth. It is prominent particularly in the shield areas of the earth; these areas have produced a large part of the world's lode gold and in most of them gold lodes are more important than the lodes of other metals. The Scandinavian shield is the only one that has not produced much gold. Nearly all of the world's gold has been derived from lodes and from sands and gravels where gold placers formed by the destruction of lodes. The gold derived from magmatic segregations, from pegmatites and from contact metamorphic deposits is quite subordinate to that derived from auriferous lodes. The lodes include all veins and related deposits that are formed by hot waters that move along fissures or other openings and that deposit vein matter in the fissures and by replacement of the country rocks along the fissures. All of the shield areas of the earth are characterized by large areas of granitic rocks including granitic gneisses, granodiorites and other acid intrusives which here are included in the general term "granite." The granites are intruded into schists, ancient lavas and other rocks which here are designated as the "invaded" rocks. The granites are parts of what once were great batholiths: that is, they are the remaining portions of great deep-seated bodies that slope outward, have very irregular roofs and so far as known have no floors but extend downward to great though unknown depths. Some of them are scores or hundreds of miles across and contain islands or "roof pendants" of the invaded rocks at places where the roofs of the batholiths were low-that is, where erosion has not yet completely unroofed the batholiths.

The flotation and adsorption behavior of ilmenite, monazite and zircon have been studied with sodium oleate as the collector and pH as the principal variable. The maxima in the flotation and adsorption properties of any of the above minerals fall within similar pH ranges. The bell shaped pH versus adsorption magnitude (r) curve is explained on the basis of collector concentration (Co and the concentration of hydroxyl ion (COH-) acting as the depressant. An equation of the type: 1 =KiCor~K2 Coh-/Coi-is proposed to account for the experimental data. The beach sand deposits along the sea coast in Southern India contain ilmenite, monazite, zircon, rutile and sillimanite as valuable minerals while quartz, garnet, shells and traces of hornblende form the gangue. A typical composition of the deposits is reported to be as follows:' Ilmenite 75%, Zircon 4-6%, Rutile 3-4%, Monazite 2 - 4%, Garnet 2 - 5% and the rest 8 -10%. Selective flotation of beach sand constituents has been reported by many workers.2-4 The fatty acid soaps have been invariably used as collectors. It is seen that all the valuable constituents of the beach sand are efficiently floated by soap collectors such as sodium oleate. In order to selectively float the beach sand constituents, it is necessary to use some depressants such as sodium silicate.3 The physicochemical parameters that govern the flotation of these minerals are yet to be studied in detail. In the present article, the findings on the parallel studies on the flotation and adsorption of the systems — ilmenite-sodium oleate, monazite-sodium oleate and zircon-sodium oleate — are being reported. The authors of the previous comment stated that Dorn and Rajnak33 and others34-40 concluded that "agreement with this function [(t'/tp) -f(Un/2Un) = T/Tc} may be used as a criterion for that (the Peierls) mechanism of deformation". In contrast, however, Dorn and Rajnak33 and others34-40 never made such a statement. In order to clarify the issues involved it is appropriate to recapitulate the conditions that must be satisfied in order to suggest that some deformation process might obey the Peierls mechanism: 1) Within permissible variations due to changes in the slope of the Peierls hill the T*/Tp - T/Tc relationship must be obeyed. Although some mechanisms, e.g.. solute atom stress field, recombination of dissociated partials in bcc metals, intersection of dissociated dislocations, and so forth, give about the same t* - T relationship, other mechanisms, such as cross slip, disruption of attractive junctions, climb, motion of jogged screw dislocations, and so forth, give distinctly different t*-T relationships. On this basis some distinction can be made of the various mechanisms. 2) An important feature of the Peierls mechanism concerns its physical origin based on the nucleation of pairs of kinks. The value of T* at 0°K increases with the density of dislocation (i.e. , cold work) for the intersection mechanism and it increases with the square root of the atomic fraction of solute atoms in the solute atom interaction mechanism. In contrast the value of t* at 0°k, for the Peierls mechanism which depends only on the line energy and the shape of the Peierls hills. is independent of cold working and the square root of the solute atom concentration. These differences have been employed by various investigators for elimination of a few other possible mechanisms. On the other hand it is not possible to eliminate all mechanisms, e.g., the recombination of dissociated dislocations in bcc metals, and so forth, on this basis alone. 3) Further discrimination between possible mechanisms is based on the activation volume. EVIDENCE has been accumulating in recent years, in part from the work of the Coal Research Laboratory, that coals belong to a family of natural polymers and that even in complex reactions the differences between coals are quantitative and not qualitative. This point of view leads to the expectation that if a series of coals were subjected to a closely controlled set of experimental conditions the results obtained should be related to the chemical analyses of the individual coals. The data accumulated over the past 10 years by the Bureau of Mines in its "Survey of Coke-, Gas-, and By-Product-Making Properties of American Coals," in what has come to be recognized as the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (BM-AGA) carbonization assay test,1-12 offer an unusual opportunity to check this conclusion. The present paper reports an analysis of the data on the first go coals and coal blends-including coals numbered I to 55b, inclusive -which have been carbonized according to a standard procedure at intervals of 100°C. from 500° to 1100° in either or both 13 or I8-in. cylindrical retorts." In Table I are given the name of the seam from which the sample was obtained, the analytical data used, and the reference to the original publication of the Bureau of Mines. The coals range in fixed carbon from 46.2 to 79.0 per cent, in volatile matter from 15.4 to 41.3 per cent, in ash; from 2.1 to 15.9 per cent, in moisture from o.8 to 19.7 per cent, and in total sulphur from 0.40 to 4.44 per cent; therefore the entire gamut of bituminous coals is represented. The petrographic nature of the individual coals is not considered in the following analysis, although both "normal" bright coals and splint coals are included in the samples studied. For information on the petrography of the coals and for further information characterizing the coals the original papers should be consulted. Although the coals that are included extend over the whole range of bituminous coals, they do not cover this range entirely adequately. In particular, only 13 of the go coals have moisture contents greater than 3 per cent. This concentration at low moisture values means that the effect of moisture, which is an important factor, cannot be determined with as much certainty as would be desirable. All the coals were not tested at every temperature and in both retort sizes. Only the first 30 coals were tested at 1100°, and only about 50 at the other temperatures, except at 900°, where nearly all of them were included. In the accompanying tables the actual number of observations entering into each correlation is given. In this study equations are given for calculating analyses, yields, and properties of coke and by-products from the coal analyses. To decide whether these equations are satisfactory it is necessary to know the accuracy with which these quantities were measured in the assay tests.

Marked improvement in the serviceability of sucker rods has been effected in the last two years, partly because of the insistent necessity for greater economy in the operating costs of crude oil production growing out of the general industrial depression and partly because many of the recently developed fields have imposed more severe operating conditions upon both surface and underground equipment. The latter is particularly true of Kansas, where practically all of the oil produced is associated with damaging amounts of hydrogen sulfide brine and where the method of establishing potential production demands equipment capable of being operated at maximum capacity without interruptions. The decline of flush production in the Oklahoma City field created new problems in deep-well pumping on a scale heretofore unequaled and the increased proportion of water it has been necessary to produce in the fields of the Greater Seminole area presented conditions that were acutely in need of betterment. The problem in the latter fields was complicated by the shift towards sulfide characteristics, which accompanied water encroachment, and it is probably true that nowhere, at the present time, are pumping conditions generally as severe as in this territory. The Mid-Continent district, therefore, has become the proving ground for the numerous materials that have been proposed for sucker-rod fabrication. The information that ultimately will be obtained from an unprecedented amount of field experimentation will pay ample dividends when the decline of East Texas increases the demand for the vast reserves of sour crude in West Texas. It is a rare occurrence in industry that the use of such a simple piece of equipment as a sucker rod presents so complicated a problem for solution. As proof of this, it is only necessary to consider the numerous types of sucker rods on the market at the present time and contrast this condition with that of less than four years ago, when it was the common aim of manufacturers to develop a single sucker rod for all conditions of

The quenching technique has been used to study phase relations in the composition area 2FeO.SiO2-FeO-SiO2-MnO.Si02-ZMnO.SiO2 of the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions such as exist in a gas mixture consisting of equul parts of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. Liquidus and solidus temperatures of most mixtures in the composition area studied are in the range of 1173° to 1345°C. EQUILIBRIUM relations existing among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon are of particular interest in two areas of steelmaking: slags and ingot inclusions. Mixtures of these oxides represent about 90 pct of the slag in the acid steelmaking process, and so dominate the chemistry of the whole refining process. These constituents also play an important role in the early slags existing at the time of the "lime boil" in the basic open hearth process. If these slags are liquid, they "wet" the lumps of lime rising from the bottom of the bath, and react with them. A liquid slag rich in CaO is then formed at the very beginning of the refining. Because the temperature is still low, all conditions for a good dephosphoriza-tion are fulfilled at this stage of the operation. Metal deoxidized with ferromanganese or silico-manganese is likely to contain, as inclusions, phases made up from among the oxides of iron, manganese, and silicon. A knowledge of stability relations existing among the phases present in this system, therefore, enables one to predict the hardness of the inclusions encountered. Moreover, because the shape of the inclusions in steel has a profound influence on the physical properties of the metal, it is important to establish whether or not the oxidic material is present as liquid or crystalline phases during heating and rolling of the steel (-1150 to 1350°C). A knowledge of melting relations in synthetic mixtures of iron oxide, manganese oxide, and silica will give a clue to these problems. Methods for determining such relations and the results obtained are described iln this paper. I) PREVIOUS WORK A number cf previous studies have dealt with the three "binary"* systems bounding the system iron oxide-mangar,.ese oxide-silica. The system iron oxide-silica was studied by Bowen and shairerl in 1932. Their data were obtained by equilibration of mixtures in contact with metallic iron. Phase relations for the system iron oxide-silica ill atmospheres of different oxygen pressures car1 be derived from data on the system FeO-Fe2O3-SiO2 as determined by Muan.2 The diagram shown iri Fig. l is a section of this system in an atmosphere of CO2 and H2 in ratio 1:l. The system manganese oxide-silica has also been the subject of several investigations. Most of the early studies suffered from a lack of proper control of the atmosphere under which the equilibrations were carried mt. Phase diagrams for the system at two well defined levels of oxygen pressures have been determined recently. Glasser3 determined stability relations in an atmosphere consisting of carbon dioxide and hydrogen in ratio 5:1, diagram Fig. 2, and Muan4 studied phase relations in the system in air.

THE Hog Mountain mine is a pyritic-gold property in the north central part of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, at an elevation of 800 ft. in the southern Appalachian region. It is 13 miles by a good secondary road from Alexander City, a station on the Central of Georgia Railroad. Since its discovery in 1839, the mine has been worked intermittently. The records of past operations are few and are scattered over a long period of time; however, available information indicates a production of approximately 12,000 oz. of gold prior to the present company's activities, which started in 1933. Additional 7844 oz. has been produced under the direction of the present management. The ore from stopes has averaged 0.200 oz. gold per ton; the ore from development, 0.136 oz. gold per ton. Silver, copper, iron and sulphur are also present but to date are of minor importance. The grade of ore in comparatively narrow veins makes necessary extreme vigilance in the methods of mining. Geology Wall Rock.-Hog Mountain consists of a quartz-diorite intrusion approximately 5000 ft. long by 1200 ft. wide. Its resistance to weathering, as compared to the surrounding schists, has led to the formation of a conspicuous ridge rising 400 ft. above the adjacent country. All the mining operations are confined within the limits of this quartz-diorite formation. . Except where there is excessive shearing, either parallel or at flat angles to the quartz veins, all the walls of the stopes within the limits of the veins are strong enough to make timbering unnecessary. Where shearing exists, there may be a sloughing off of the walls, especially in the process of drawing the ore. When this occurs, stulls are placed in the stope, either while the stope is advancing, or while ore is being drawn from a completed stope. In general, very little timber is required. Veins.-The quartz veins have been deposited along fracture planes in the quartz diorite. There are 20 principal veins, all of which are roughly parallel and strike at right angles to the long axis of the formation.

THE second operation in the art of casting, and one of the greatest importance, is that of melting and thoroughly liquefying the materials of which you wish to make your casting. On this operation depends the whole outcome of your intentions and the perfection of your work. Without it, even though you had a great abundance of moulds and vast quantities of bronze, your desires, labor, and expense would all be in vain. In this operation I find on consideration that, in addition to experience, there are three necessities-perhaps indeed four-that must be provided without fail. The first is the furnace or other agent which contains the fire and the metal brought together. The second is the wood or charcoal which is the necessary and proper nutriment of the fire, from whose virtues are derived the greater or lesser forces which, according to their kind, are ready to effect what is required. The third is to have the materials disposed to easy fusion by means of corruption, alloying, or by their own nature. The fourth, as the motivating cause of the whole, could perhaps be listed as the first-this is the ingenuity and good judgment of the worker, together with the bodily exertions not only of himself but also of his helpers in addition. For, besides a certain ordinary caution, it is necessary to pay particular attention, first, to see that the furnaces, machines, ladles, hearths, refineries, and other kinds of instruments or similar vessels be made so as to dispose the metals for melting, and, when melted, that they easily maintain them so. These should also be prepared in such a way that they cannot be injured by the fire, for if they should be damaged the operation would fail. In order to do this, it is first necessary that you arrange the instruments with forethought and action so that the power of the fire can operate. Fire operates on things only when brought together with them in long-continued operation, or when driven by a great force of wind. It burns many things and softens others, but it makes the metals as liquid as water.

An investigation of the hydrometallurgy of Cu-Zn concentrates by The Dowa Mining Co. of Japan is described and a detailed flowsheet of the Kosaka hydro-metallurgical plant is given. Sufficient operating experience has shown that the Dorrco FluoSolids system has proven successful for recovery of both zinc and copper by roasting in a fluidized bed. At present, 2400 metric tons of concentrates per month are being treated and recoveries of 93 pct Cu and 65 pct Zn are being effected. A SURVEY of the Japanese chemical industry in 1949 revealed, among other things, that sulphur-bearing blast furnace gas from the Kosaka smelter of The Dowa Mining Co. Ltd., Kosaka, Japan, was being exhausted to the atmosphere as waste. In addition, it was costing that company an average of ten million yen ($28,000) annually for damages to the surrounding property caused by the sulphur dioxide in the gas. It was recommended by this survey that the gas be utilized for the production of sulphuric acid by the contact process. Mr. Kurushima visited the United States in May 1950 to investigate the engineering, construction, and operation of a contact acid plant. Any acid produced at Kosaka would necessarily have to be 98 pct H,SO, to prevent corrosion in railroad tank cars transporting it to the point of use. However, the production of 98 pct acid requires constant volume and SO, content of the gas. As the converter gas at Kosaka fluctuates in both volume and quality, it was decided to evaluate the smelting process with relation to other methods of recovery. This evaluation revealed a relatively new type of roaster, the Dorrco FluoSolids reactor, which was reported to be capable of roasting the copper sulphide concentrate in an excess of air with the production of an SO1 gas strong enough for acid production and a water-soluble copper sulphate calcine. The copper sulphate then could be leached from the roasted ore and electrolytic copper recovered from the leach solution in much the same manner as practiced by the Chile Exploration CO. for treating naturally occuring copper sulphate ores. Use of a reactor of this type would eliminate the need for a blast furnace and converter and, in addition, would effect savings in labor and fuel. The Kosaka ore is a microscopically fine mixture of copper, zinc, and lead sulphides. The lead and a small amount of the barite present can be separated by flotation, but any separation of copper and zinc proved extremely difficult. In blast furnace operation at Kosaka, zinc had been slagged off until a stockpile of about 12,000,000 tons containing 5 pct Zn had been accumulated. Mr. Kurushima felt that if any of the zinc in the concentrate was sulphat-ized and leached with the copper, it also could be recovered electrolytically. The Dorr Co., sponsors of fluidization technique in the metallurgical field, suggested that sulphate roasting be tested out on a laboratory scale and that, if successful, a commercial Dorrco FluoSolids system be constructed. They indicated that the results from such laboratory tests could be transposed to a commercial scale without pilot planting the roasting operation. It was therefore decided to send samples of flotation concentrate to the West-port Mill, laboratories of The Dorr Co., for testing. The objective of Mr. Kurushima's visit to the United States thus had changed from investigation of sulphuric acid plants to a fundamental examination of the hydrometallurgy of copper and zinc. MANY investigations are reported in the literature on the age hardening of Al-Mg-Zn alloys but most of them are concerned mainly with mechanical property changes. The present investigation was started to determine the structural changes in an AlMgZn alloy. The alloy composition was chosen in the existing phase diagram" so as to lie on the quasi-binary section Al-(AlZn)Mg Actually, it was found that the diagram as published was inexact at the lower temperatures and that the phase in equilibrium with aluminum at the lower temperatures is not the ternary compound. Technique The alloy used for the investigation was prepared from high purity materials and the resulting composition as determined by chemical and spectro-graphic analysis was: Zn, 6.17 pct; Mg, 2.13 pct; CU, 0.03 pct; Si, 0.009 pct; Fe, 0.005 pct; and the remainder, aluminum. An ingot -in. thick was cast, homogenized, hot and cold-rolled to strip 0.064-in. thick for dilato-metric and powder work, and to foil 0.005-in. thick for single crystal work. Solution treatment temperature for all specimens was 475°±5°C for periods of at least 1 hr, either in air furnaces or lead baths. Aging was done in oil or Pb-Bi baths controlled to within ±3°C. The aging was investigated at the following temperatures: room (30°), 130°, ZOO0, 260°, and 300°C. For the dilatometric study, the length changes were measured continuously, at temperature, using strips of alloy 10 in. long, shaped as channels to eliminate undesirable deflection due to bending. To compensate for thermal expansion and contraction due to the variations in the temperature of the aging baths, the dilatometers were built of the same alloy as the one being tested, with the same shape and size, but with material fully annealed. Gages on which 0.0005 in. could be read and 0.0001 in. estimated were used to measure the dilation. Length changes were also measured at room temperature. Strips approximately 10 in. long were solution-treated, quenched, and measured in a supermicrome-ter in which 0.0001 in. could be read and 0.00001 in. estimated. The specimens were immediately aged for a given time, remeasured, and then the cycle was repeated, including the solution treatment. The error of measurement with this technique was somewhat larger, but the results confirmed those obtained by continuous measurements. The sheet used for the dilatometric work was checked to determine grain orientation. Both X-rays and etching methods revealed a rather coarse grain size but only a negligible amount of preferred orientation. Thus, volume changes calculated from length changes are not invalidated by preferential orientation effects. Pieces of the sheet used for the dilatometric work were also used for the metal -lographic work. Filings for the powder X-ray study were produced from a homogenized piece of sheet. These filings were magnetically purged of iron, screened to 200 mesh, sealed in a Pyrex tube containing an argon atmosphere, and solution-treated. When quenching, the glass tube was broken, so that the powder dropped directly into cold water. After drying with alcohol, the powder was sealed into capillary tubes containing an argon atmosphere and then aged for the required times. In spite of all these precautions the three strongest lines of a( Al2o) appeared in all patterns, and were used as internal standards. By the use of these standards, accurate corrections for film shrinkage were obtained. For the back reflection patterns, annealed nickel powder was mixed with the specimen to act as internal standard. The recent application of lineal analysislt2 to the austenite-martensite reaction has made possible a quantitative study of the kinetics of this transformation during rapid cooling. Martensite range curves can thus be constructed to portray the onset of the reaction at Ma and its subsequent progress as a function of temperature down to and below the ambient. It now seems in order to investigate other aspects of the martensite transformation, using this quantitative method of approach. One of the least understood characteristics of the austenite-martensite reaction is that of stabilization which has been defined by Troiano and Greninger3 as 'la lowering of Ma, resulting from aging, without change in chemical composition of the parent solid solution." In other words, if the hardening quench is arrested at a predetermined subcritical temperature (TA) for a sufficient period of time, more austenite may be retained at a given lower Or reference temperature (Tr) than if the steel had been cooled directly and rapidly to Tr in the first place. For the purposes of the work at hand, the extent of stabilization produced by the isothermal treatment at Th is measured explicitly in terms of the excess austenite (6) that exists in the steel at T,, over and above the amount that is normally present after direct quenching to T,. T, is conveniently taken to be room temperature, but this choice is not essential and is sometimes undesirable. The holding temperature (TA) may be above or below M,, and still cause stabilization depending upon the themistry of the austenite. stabilization has been found to occur in the presence of bainite4 and of martensite6,6,7,8 as well as in the absence of either,g The phe-nomenon of stabilization is not concerned with (and may even be obscured by) ferrite formation or any other type of phase change occurring at T~ that alters the chemistry of the remaining austenite. Such a structural change would obviously influence the martensite transformation during subscquent cooling. Stabilization, however, is more subtle; it appears to manifest itself without detectable variation of the austenite composition, whether in the presence or absence of transformation products. There are relatively few direct references to stabilization in the literature. WHILE the literature in the United States on general polarographic technique is extensive, very little appears to be directly applicable to the analysis of flotation tailings. For this reason, it seemed worth while to present a few polarographic methods of ore analysis that have been in constant use in the laboratories of the Hercules Experiment Station for the past few years. At the time of our initial investigation of the polarographic method, there was little or no mention of its specific application to flotation tailings. It was therefore necessary for us to establish suitable conditions for the analysis of our flotation tailings and to consider possible interfering constituents. The polarograph, or dropping mercury electrode, method was discovered in 1925 by J. Heyrovsky and M. Shikata,1 of the Charles University, Prague. This method has since received extensive development and the literature contains many articles on the use of the polarograph for the quantitative determination of metals as well as anions, oxygen in solution, and reducible organic compounds. Kolthoff and Lingane,2 by the publication of their book, "Polarography," in 1941 did much to advance the knowledge and use of the polarograph. In chapter 25 of that book, methods for the polarographic analysis of brass, steel and iron products, alloys, and zinc ore are given. Aluminum,3 cadmium,3.4 cobalt,4 copper,3-9 gold,10 iron,3,11 lead, 3,12,13 molybdenum," nickel,4.8,9 tin,15 and zinc3,4,5,7 in ores have been analyzed by the polarograph. However, most of the work on tailing samples has been published in Russian journals and translations are not yet readily available. In this paper we will describe the method that was developed and used in our laboratory for the determination of copper, zinc, and lead in flotation tailings. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD The polarograph is an instrument for applying a potential to a mercury pool and a dropping mercury electrode separated by a solution, and for measuring the resultant electrical current. The procedure is essentially a small-scale electrolysis, in which the voltage required to reduce or oxidize the material identifies it qualitatively and the current measures the concentration quantitatively. Different constituents in a sample may often be determined simultaneously provided they reduce at sufficiently different voltages. An example is the determination of copper and zinc in the same solution. The reduction potentials are quite far apart, as shown in Fig. I. The polarographic method is particularly useful in the range of concentration between those normally determined by spectographic and chemical methods. In

INTRODUCTION Fineness is one of the main characteristics of powders and this parameter is the object of several definitions based on criteria connected with their uses as well as their determination methods. In trying to obtain the best reaction surface, fineness is characterized by the determination of the specific surface, but in other cases, particle size analysis is used. These two main methods are not, in fact, entirely independent and their complementary nature provides information concerning the morphology of the particles. In the case of a product formed by isodimensional spheres, the relationship between the specific surface and the diameter is well known: [S = 6 spd] where p is the specific weight of the material and d the diameter of the spheres. With no monodimensional spheres, but rather a granulometric distribution whose occurrences follow a mathematical law (1), the relationship is more complicated. The relationship between the specific surface measured by gas adsorption and the data of the particle size analysis is much more difficult to predict in the case of asymmetric porous particles, whose particle size distribution curves do not correspond to a known statistical law.

The Holden mine operated by the Chelan Division of the Howe Sound Co. is on the east slope of the Cascade Range in north central Washington on the south slope of Railroad Creek valley at an elevation of 3500 ft. The mine may be reached by a 40 mile boat trip from the town of Chelan which is at the southern tip of Lake Chelan, to Lucerne at the mouth of Railroad Creek and an 11. mile bus ride up Railroad Creek to Holden. A11 freight and concentrate is moved over this route to Chelan Falls on the Columbia River which is on the railroad four miles below the town of Chelan. The mine is now producing 2000 tons of gold, copper, and zinc ore per day which is treated in the Holden mill. Gold-copper and zinc concentrates are made, the first of which is shipped to Tacoma, Wash., and the latter to Kellogg, Idaho, for smelting. Ore is broken by long-hole blasting using the Noranda system which has been modified to meet local conditions. Until recently, blastholes have been drilled by diamond drills. Now a partial substitution of percussion drill holes, drilled with tungsten carbide insert bits, is being made. Geology The ore body occurs as a replacement deposit in a highly metamorphosed series of sedimentary rocks, mainly gneiss and schists, in a shear zone several hundred feet in width and of undetermined length. Commercial ore has been found in mineable widths of 25 to 100 ft for approximately 2500 ft along its strike. The commercial minerals are chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and gold. During the period of mineralization considerable silicifica-tion took place giving the ore an abrasive drilling characteristic. Following the period of mineralization, numerous dikes were introduced into the ore body. The earlier ones were of granite composition having a width of a few inches up to 80 ft. These were followed by much younger, fine grained basic dikes which usually do not exceed 2 ft in width. Development of Percussion Blasthole Drilling Equipment Test work with the 1½-in. tungsten carbide bit was carried on in development headings for several months early in 1947. The short life of the bits, because of gauge loss caused by the abrasive nature of the rock, prevented its adoption for this use. However fast drilling speed and ability to drill a long uniform hole suggested its use for drilling blastholes in competition with diamond drills as diamond costs were steadily increasing and exper-ienced drillers were difficult to obtain. The 1½-in. bit was the largest available at the time initial test work was started with sectional steel. The 1½-in. hole limited the diameter of the steel thread and coupling which could be used. Type F couplings were first used but because of the small thread section excessive breakage of the steel was experienced. Type H couplings were tried next. In order to use this coupling which is 15/8 in. in outside diameter, it was reduced to 1 3/8 in. giving 1/8 in. clearance between the coupling and the hole. Rod breakage at the thread was substantially reduced but some coupling breakage was experienced, however the overall performance was considered satisfactory (see Fig 1 for illustration of coupling and thread). Early test work with the 1½ in. bit indicated machines of piston diameters larger than 255 in. would cause inserts to loosen or break. It was found however that the additional weight of the sectional steel cushioned the blow enough to prevent bit failures when 3-in. Leyners were used. Rods used with the 1½-in. bits were 7/8 in. q. o. for sectional steel and 1 in. q. o. for all chuck pieces. In May 1948, 2-in. tungsten carbide bits became available and test work was immediately started. The 2-in. hole approximated the AX (1 15/16 in.) diamond drill hole which was being used exclusively for blastholes and permitted their substitution for diamond drill holes in a ring without alteration of pattern, burden, or explosives. The 2-in. bit also gave room in the hole for larger couplings and permitted the use of heavier rods and 3½-in. machines, increasing the
