At the dawning of the first century of AIME, mechanical handling of bulk materials was largely confined to movement of grain and light mill products by belt and screw conveyors, but grain handling experience inevitably led to the use of the belt conveyor for coal, ore and other heavier materials. In 1891, the first major U.S. conveyor installation for heavy minerals was completed at the Edison, N.J., plant of the New Jersey & Pennsylvania Concentrating Co. Functionally, this plant revealed its grain elevator heritage. Overlooked at the time of design or, perhaps more accurately, not fully recognized, were the dramatic differences between grain and minerals in both operating conditions of the system and the physical characteristics of the material to be conveyed. This inevitably caused problems, but from the ashes of these problems rose solutions. The Edison plant became a proving ground from which came two significant developments by Thomas Robins-the first conveyor belt designed specifically for impact loading and abrasive materials and the three-roll conveyor idler. As an installation with more than 50 conveyors in widths of 20-30 in. and belt centers of up to 500 ft, the plant was a landmark, for it established the belt conveyor as a vital method of trans- porting heavy, abrasive materials.

The estimated production of petroleum in the Dominion of Canada for 1931 was 1,582,000 bbl., an increase of 60,000 bbl. over 1930. Nearly all of the production came from Alberta, with a small quantity from Ontario, and a very minor amount reported from New Brunswick. At the beginning of 1931 it was hoped, and predicted, that a substantial increase in production would be shown for that year, but such was not the case, since Alberta did not show the anticipated gain. The production from Ontario and New Brunswick has not varied more than a few thousand barrels during the past 10 years and aggregated 124,000 bbl. in 1930, with 126,600 bbl. estimated for 1931. Unless new fields are discovered, production in 1932 will decline, with Ontario and New Brunswick showing little change and Alberta declining appreciably. Raphael PUmpelly, who became a member of the Institute in 1871, the year of its organization, and retained his membership for a long period, died at his home in Newport, R. I., Aug. 10, 1923. He is survived by a son, Raphael, Jr., and by two daughters, one of whom is the wife of Prof. Henry L. Smyth, of Harvard. Doctor Pumpelly was born in Oswego, N. Y., in 1835. He studied sciences and mining engineering in Paris and at Freiberg, later taking his Doctor's degree at Princeton. He was Professor of Mining at Harvard from 1866 to 1873. Doctor Pumpelly made geological explorations in many lands. In 1861-63, he conducted a scientific exploration for the Japanese government, and for two years thereafter carried on researches in central, western, and northern China and Mongolia. In 1864-65, he undertook a voyage of exploration across the Gobi desert, returning to Europe through Siberia. He was State Geologist of Michigan from 1869 to 1871; Director of the Missouri Geological Survey from 1871 to 1873; and Chief of Division, U. S. Geological Survey, directing the mineral industries division of the tenth census. He organized and directed the Northern Transcontinental Survey, 1881-84; directed the explorations inaugurating the iron ore industry of most of the ranges of Michigan and Western Ontario, 1897-1901; initiated and directed a physical-geographical and archeo-logical exploration of Central Asia under the auspices of the Carnegie Institution of Washington, 19034.2.

THE disastrous effect of two major wars on foreign economic health is giving American capital opportunities which might have not otherwise developed. At a time when discovery of major orebodies in the United States awaits fuller application of new geophysical tools and technical methods, U. S. investors must seek other fields where investment may be put to work. The unsettling effects of war have made it almost impossible for foreign nationals to develop mineral wealth, permitting Americans to enter at a time when U. S. mining, with a few exceptions, is in the process of expanding known orebodies and developing only a few new ones. Available capital, however, is not the only pre- requisite for entering the foreign mineral development field. The capital must be able to work in favorable economic atmosphere, a condition not easily satisfied in a world constantly in a state of political and social flux. In many countries, the political theory changes as often as the wind direction in March. Thus, the political stability of the form of government is of prime importance to the investor. In addition, a balanced budget and a moderate tax structure are important. Because in making foreign investment it is inevitable that one will have dealings with government officials, it is basic that they must be of high integrity. In countries filling the requirements, it will usually be found that the economic initiative of the individual is respected. Some of the broader relations between structure and ore deposition along the London fault, deduced from a thorough study of the geology of the eastern part of the Mosquito Range, should be of general interest to economic geologists. The first part of this paper is a generalized statement of the geology of the region in which the London fault is located; it may be supplemented by reference to several earlier publications by the writers and to the U. S. Geological Survey's Professional Paper 148, on the Leadville district. The second part deals with the structure of both the fault and the disturbed zone adjoining the fault. The third part discusses the salient features of the ore deposits, particularly emphasizing structural control. The two generalized maps are complementary to one another but contain too many data to show on a single small map. The London fault is between Leadville and Alma, and the ore deposits along it are said to lie in the Alma district. Field work in this district, during six summers since 1927, has been a part of the cooperative work of the U. S. Geological Survey, the State of Colorado, and the Colorado Metal Mining Board. The writers have made use of work by R. D. Butler, J. W. Vanderwilt and R. E. Landon. G. F. Loughlin and C. H. Behre, Jr., who have worked on the west side of the range, have contributed valuable suggestions. Mining men of the district have aided in many ways. General Geology Pre-Cambrian Rocks.—The oldest rocks in the district are schists, correlated with the Idaho Springs formation of the Front Range. Quartz-mica schist predominates, but other types occur locally; almost everywhere the rocks show considerable lit-par-lit injection. Intrusive into the schists are two varieties of granite, only one of which is widespread. It is a fine-grained, porphyritie, gray granite correlated with the Silver Plume granite of the Front Range. THE Boulder batholith of western Montana may be considered a uranium province: a regional geologic environment within which uranium is found in uncommon amounts. Reconnaissance examinations indicated that the Atomic Energy Commission should undertake an evaluation of the potential of this area for uranium production. The AEC has been assisted by the U. S. Geological Survey which has given priority to selected uranium-bearing areas in overall studies of the mineral deposits of the batholith and adjacent regions. Although no out- standing uranium deposits have been discovered, uranium ore has been produced from three widely separated deposits upon which most of the exploration to date has been directed. The intrusive mass referred to as the Boulder batholith occupies a strip of mountainous country about 18 miles wide between Butte and Helena, Mont., covering an area of approximately 1000 sq miles. Elevations range from 3500 ft along Prickly Pear Creek to nearly 9000 ft near Elkhorn Peak a few miles to the east. Except for a few flat-lying valley lands, the region is wooded with lodgepole pine and fir. Though mainly dependent upon mining ventures in the past, the area now is supported, outside of the Butte district, almost wholly by agriculture and some lumbering.

Illustrated guidebooks treating in a popular descriptive way of the geology and other features of the Western United States have been issued by the U. S. Geological Survey. They will be of much interest to mem¬bers in connection with the Arizona Meeting of the Institute and espe¬cially the guidebook of the Santa Fe Route, with side trips to the Grand Canyon, containing as it does relief maps, topographical and geological maps, covering the entire route of the railroad, illustrations from photo¬graphs and other interesting descriptions of this great country. The method of treatment is adapted to the lay-reader, although it includes much valuable and interesting technical information concerning the geographical and other features. The books are well indexed. These volumes sell for 50 c. each and may be obtained from the Superintendent of Documents, Washington, D. C. These guidebooks originally sold for $1 each, but the reprint edition has been reduced to 50 c. A list of the different guidebooks follows: Bulletin 611. AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. Kuczynski's formula has been derived for the case of nonspherical particles. TWO formulae of Kuczynski's type have been derived, one describing the increase in tensile strength, the other describing the progress of shrinkage of a powder compact. It has been strength,shown that the exponents of all three formulae each contain two magnitudes of different physical characters, viz, the geometrical factor a and the kinetic factor ß. The interrelationships between the three exponents are stated. SOME years ago Kuczynski1 experimentally showed that the radius, x, of the area of contact between very small spherical metal particles and a metallic block is related to the time of sintering, t, by the following equation x = constant tk [11 where k has the value 1/5 or 1/7. Assuming that the metal particles were perfect spheres and the metallic block was perfectly flat, he derived the foregoing equation from theoretical considerations of the process of material transport in metals, and he showed that exponent k is different for different mechanisms of transport, e.g., k = 1/2 for viscous flow (according to Frenkel2), k = 1/3 for evaporation and condensation, k = 1/5 for volume diffusion, and k = 1/7 for surface diffusion. From this Kuczynski concluded that the mechanism of transport was either volume diffusion or surface diffusion, depending on whether the value of k, as found in his experiments, was 1/5 or 1/7. Subsequently. Cabrera8 corrected Kuczynski's calculations with regard to surface diffusion, showing that the theoretical value of exponent k is 1/5 for both volume and surface diffusion. He supposed that the different experimental values of k were due to slight differences in the shape of the metal particles. An exponential relationship similar to the aforementioned was found by Okamura, Masuda, and Kikuta,4 Masuda and Kikuta, and Takasaki8 when studying the rate of shrinkage on powder compacts during sintering. The authors measured the shrinkage by means of the fraction w = Vp — V./Vp — V,,,, where V,, is the volume of the green compact, V, is the volume of the sintered compact, and V,,, is the volume of the compact in its densest state. This fraction, w, they found, is related to the time of sintering, t, by the equation w == constant tm. [21 Further, Bockstiegel, Masing, and Zapf7 observed that the tensile strength, s, of sintering iron powder compacts can also be related to the time of sintering, t, by an equation of the foregoing type, i.e., s = constant tn. [3] For exponent n the values 0.28 (S=2/7) and 0.35 ( 2/5) were obtained, and the authors pointed out that there might exist a simple interrelation between exponent n as found in their experiments and exponent k in Kuczynski's equation. The authors supposed that 2k = n, since the strength of adhesion between a metal sphere and a block (as in Kuczyn-ski's experiments) must approximately be proportional to their contact area, p. x2. Theoretical Considerations This paper is an attempt to correlate the fundamental experiments of Kuczynski's type with the results obtained with powder compacts as represented by Egs. 2 and 3. In particular, the paper is to show how the rate of sintering is influenced by the geometry of the sintering particles and by the type of material transport. As the geometry of particles conglomerating in a powder compact is very complex, some simplifying assumption has to be made, of course, in order to adapt the problem to mathematical treatment. In the following paragraph a suitable simplification is introduced, and Kuczynski's formula is derived for the case of nonsphcrical particles. Relation Between Area of Contact and Sintering Time—As the face of contact between two particles in a sintering powder compact is not necessarily a circle (as in the case of spheres sintering to a block), Kuczynski's formula is modified as follows: Let the perimeter of the face of contact be described by means of polar coordinates R, 4, as shown in Fig. la, so the area of contact, f, is determined by f= 1/2 . A new and unique logging tool, called the Borehole Televiewer (BHTV), has been developed to inspect boreholes and to evaluate formations. Even though geologists and engineers have had only about 3 years' experience with the BHTV, the thinking of many of them has been radically influenced by the fascinating and revealing "log-picture" recorded with the tool. The BHTV fills a need for a logging tool that can produce a direct and descriptive record of the physical properties of the borehole environment. Although primarily developed to evaluate fractured reservoirs, the BHTV has been used successfully to solve a variety of problems related to formation evaluation and borehole inspection. Geologists and petroleum engineers have been confounded for many years by the problems of locating and evaluating fractures. Interpretation of the usual resistivity, acoustic or radioactivity logs, as well as the analysis of cores, for evaluation of fractured reservoirs is extremely difficult and often not definitive. This is understandable since analysis of cores from fractured formations has reported variously: (a) low porosity, (b) no effective permeability, (c) lack of any matrix oil saturation and (d) oil stains on fracture planes as the only indications of potential production.14 In recent years acoustic amplitude logs have been introduced and used with varying degrees of success to locate fractures.8'9'11"13 Conventional amplitude logs at best give only qualitative answers where quantitative ones are desired. The logs reveal nothing of the orientation of the fractures. In addition to these logs, various types of cameras, television, and rubber impression packers have been used for borehole inspection. (See Appendix.) The BHTV logging tool supplies both the quantitative and the orientation answers about fractures. The borehole can be filled with any homogeneous, gas-free liquid such as fresh water, saturated brine, crude oil or drilling muds. This tool takes an "acoustic picture" of the borehole wall. The resulting log is a representation of the borehole wall as if it were split vertically and laid flat. The log is oriented with respect to magnetic north. Any physical changes in the borehole wall are seen as changes in picture intensity. In this way, fractures, deformation or pits are reflected on the log. Tool Description The fundamental parts of the BHTV are shown in Fig. 1. A piezoelectric transducer probes the borehole wall with bursts of acoustic energy. A flux-gate magnetometer senses the earth's magnetic field and provides the means for determining the orientation of the log. A motor rotates the transducer and mag-
