INTRODUCTION The Endako deposit was first explored in 1926, but development waited until the early nineteen sixties. It first came under the control of Placer Development in 1963, and early in 1964 a decision to bring it into production was reached. The deposit is located near the geographic center of British Columbia, and is served by an east-west communication system including a paved highway, mainline railway and good telephone, teletype, and computer facilities. The plant area is shown in Figure 1. The operation is known as the Endako Mines Division of Canex Placer Limited of Vancouver. First production was achieved in June, 1965, at a nominal rate of 10,000 tons per day, but it soon was closer to 15,000 tons per day. In 1967, two new grinding and flotation, sections brought capacity to the present rate of approximately 27,000 tons per day. With mill heads of around 0.15 percent MoS2, production is about 14,000,000 pounds of molybdenum per year. A flowsheet of the operation is given in Figure 2. A legend for this flowsheet is given in Table 1. Published ore reserves are estimated at 214,500,000 tons at an average grade of 0.143 percent MoS2. Since the original paper, two methods have been introduced to compute the parameters of the three parameter size distribution equation: [ ] Both of them are based on graphical means, which are time-consuming and of little statistical significance. A program has been developed, using the Gauss-Newton method to compute by nonlinear regression analysis the parameters of the equation. Although the method is quite general in curve-fitting applications, it does not appear to be used in the field of size analysis, and a brief description is given. As applied here, the Gauss-Newton method involves the minimization of the least squares: [ ] where n is the number of sieves used. The types of substructures developed during high-temperature creep of (110)[001]-oriented polycrys-talline Fe-3.1 pct Si were examined by electroetching of dislocation sites. Edge dislocations were observed to accumulate adjacent to grain boundaries and poly-gonize perpendicular to their glide planes to form a "Pile-up" of nearly parallel tilt boundaries. The dislocation density developed within the grains during steady-state creep was found to increase with increasing stress. The formation of periodically spaced groups of edge dislocations along grain boundaries was observed, and it was proposed that these formed to relive bending stresses at grain boundary shear .faults. Grain boundary serrations developed at these faults, and it was suggested that this was a result of localized grain boundary migration at the polygonized groups. THE authors have conducted a series of high-temperature creep tests on (110)[001]-oriented poly-crystalline Fe-3.1 pct Si sheet. The creep specimens were examined at various stages of creep by means of electrolytic etching of dislocation sites using the chrome-acetic acid solution developed by Morris.' Hibbard and Dunn2 have demonstrated that the etch pits produced with this technique correspond to single dislocations. It is the purpose of this paper to present and discuss the dislocation substructures which were formed during high-temperature creep at constant stress. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The polycrystalline Fe-3.1 pct Si sheet employed in this study contained a (110)[001] texture. The paper discusses the effect of aeration and agitation on grade and recovery of molybdenite. A series of factorially designed flotation tests were carried out in a "Leeds Automatic Laboratory Flotation Cell." Analysts of flotation results indicate that molybdenite has fast floating and slow floating components. The rates of fast floating components, which do not create a problem inflotation, could be varied by changing agitation or airflow rates. However, the rate of slow floating components was stable and was only a function of residence time. Aeration has a significant effect on the grade of MoS2 and only a slight effect on the recovery of MoS2. Agitation has a slight effect on the grade, but does not effect the recovery of molybdenite. The implications of the results on the design of flotation cells and control and optimization of the existing circuits are also considered.

THE remarkable outflow of natural gas recently developed in Western Pennsylvania, and along the valley of the Ohio and its tributaries, has called attention to an important series of patents for improvements in glass-fnrnaces and the manufacture of glass, which the brothers Siemens have made since 1872. The basement-patent of this series, is No. 127,806 of the U. S. Patent office, and is of date June 11th, 1872. This has been followed by eleven other patents (including one re-issue), all for improvements in glass-furnaces, or methods of manufacture, of which the latest is of date July 11th, 1882. Nine of these patents were issued in 1880-82. The following is the list of these patents, in order of dates, viz.: 1872. June 11th. No. 127,806 (U. Kansas continued holding, for its seventh year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The crude-oil production, according to purchaser's reports to the State Corporation Commission, was 40,008,940 bbl.; as assembled by the Oil and Gas Journal, 41,305,768, and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 41,942,000 barrels. Increase of production from 1932 was largely due to greater stability of the industry, and increased return of demand for Kansas oil, caused by the addition of Federal assistance in national production regulation which reduced illegal production, of some areas out of Kansas, that had been destructively competing with Kansas crude or its refined products, at less than cost of production. Prices continued to advance from the lowest level of 25c per barrel during part of May and June, until by the end of September 36" gravity crude had reached $1 per barrel and continued at this price the remainder of the year. Price stability, for a period greater than in previous years, has brought renewed confidence to those producing oil and has led to renewed interest and increased purchases of Kansas leases. Drilling was confined chiefly to the number of wells necessary to protect from offset and other drainage in the field and to meet the requirements of expiring lease contract deeper areas in Mid-Continent, are an added inducement to exploration. The renewal of interest in the search for new fields in Kansas is already apparent and 1934 will probably see more wildcatting than for several years. This is due both to the expiration of leases on large blocks and to actual demand of the industry for new fields. Exploration for favorable areas is being actively conducted by the various methods of surface, subsurface and core drilling and geophysical work. Much of western Kansas cannot be mapped by surface study and geophysical exploration has been of considerable assistance and has led to a large use of the seismograph. Several companies are conducting seismograph surveys and leasing on findings already secured. Development under the more favorable conditions of 1933 can be readily seen by the comparison of the following reports for the last weeks of December in the respective years.

IN endeavoring to put the art of the steelmaker on a more scientific basis, as a means of securing closer control of the product, we must be severely critical of the basis of any theory we use. In particular, we must be careful to distinguish between factors that are primary and those of only secondary importance. The concentration relations that determine the slag-metal equilibria, which are usually more or less closely attained, are of course of primary significance, but a clear picture of the whole process requires that the actual rates of the several reactions be taken properly into account. At the high temperature of the steelmaking furnace, all reactions might be thought to be very rapid, but some of them in fact are not; the essential causes of this condition are important to a proper understanding of the process. This paper aims to present, and to justify, the viewpoint that the most significant reaction is the oxidation of carbon in the metal, the progress of which determines the oxygen pressure levels in slag and metal and produces stirring effects, all of which influence the course of the process as a whole. REACTION RATES AT STEELMAKING TEMPERATURES General experience in reaction rates makes it almost certain that at steelmaking temperatures equilibrium is attained practically instantaneously when the reactants are well distributed in a single liquid phase -that is, in the so-called homogeneous reactions. The actual slowness of some of the reactions in the open-hearth furnace must therefore be attributed to a relatively slow rate of diffusion within the slag or metal phase, which limits the rate at which the reactants can meet each other in the liquid steel or at its surface. That the reactions can be made to go with great rapidity, by proper mixing and stirring of the reacting phases, is indicated by the following illustrations: I. In the Bessemer process there is intimate contact between air and the whole mass of metal, and the reactions are complete in a few minutes. 2. Perrin1 has demonstrated that by pouring liquid steel into slag contained in a deep ladle, and thereby producing almost a slag-metal emulsion, the phosphorus or oxygen content of the steel is adjusted immediately. 3. Barret, Holbrook and Woods observed a quite rapid rate of desulphurization when powdered calcium carbide was stirred vigorously into liquid iron. 4. When a spoonful of liquid steel is poured into a mold containing aluminum wire, the formation and precipitation of alumina occurs in the fraction of a second required to freeze the surface layer of the tiny ingot. The first three examples all show that any means of increasing the effective surface between slag and metal and promoting intimate mixture of the reacting phases, thereby obviating the limitation imposed by diffusion, will enhance the speed of the steelmaking process.

A number of articles have been published, notably those by R. S. Handy, R. T. Hancock and A. P. Watt in Engineering and Mining Journal, dealing with the calculations involved in ore dressing. These publications demonstrate both the importance of the subject and the lack of success in developing a generally recognized method for comparing enrichment effects. Considering that we may wish to compare enrichment results on similar or dissimilar ores, that we may desire to make the comparison on the basis of either the absolute or the economical efficiency, and that the number of factors upon which the result depends is large, the question arises whether it is possible to set up a positive method for such calculations. In the following pages it is our aim to show that a sure, complete and successful way to overcome existing difficulties has been found. RECENT lead-smelting techniques have tended toward use of high-grade concentrates with minimum amounts of flu, accompanied by profitable employment of roast reaction.1-5 In order to better understand these smelting processes, thermodynamical calculations have been carried out on the Pb-S-0 system, and the results obtained have been presented in isothermal reaction diagrams in which log Ps, and logPo, were the axes. The diagram thus constructed seems to be more convenient to grasp the equilibrium aspect than those published hitherto.6-8

As part of an ongoing research program, the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is monitoring surface subsidence over six longwall panels at three Utah coal mines. These sites are characterized by mining depths of 244 to 610 meters (800 to 2,000 ft .), thick and massive sandstone layers in the overburden strata, multiple seam mining, extraction heights of approximately 1.8 to 3 meters (6 to 10 ft.), and rugged surface topography. Maximum subsidence, angle of draw, timing relative to mining, horizontal strain, and rate of subsidence development are being determined and correlated with mining and geologic variables. Results to date indicate the maximum vertical subsidence over the monitored panels ranges from 0.6 to 0.9 meters (2 to 3 ft.). The major factors controlling the amount of subsidence are the panel dimensions and the status of adjacent panel mining. Only minor surface cracking at the panel ends was evident at any of the sites. In all cases, there was a time lag of several months between the start of mining and subsidence at the surface. As subsequent panels are monitored and additional data become available, better estimates of the effect of various site characteristics on the subsidence will be possible. Ultimately, improved prediction capabilities will allow mine operators in the West to evaluate the potential for subsidence-related damage which could affect the current or future land use above the mine.

Single bit-tooth penetration experiments under static load were conducted on six rocks at confining pressures of O to 5,000 psi using sharp wedge-shaped teeth with included angles ranging from 30 to 120° In general, the force-displacement curves for all rocks exhibit an increasingly nonlinear and discontinuous behavior with decreasing confining pressure. The confining pressure at which a rock exhibits a macroscopic transition from predominantly ductile to predominantly brittle behavior during penetration vmies from about 500 to 1,000 psi for the limestones to greater than 5,000 psi for dolomite. The correlation between calculated values of force per unit penetration based on plasticity theory and experimental values is quite encouraging, even at confining pressures as low as 1,000 psi A qualitative correlation between volume of fragmented rock per unit energy input for a single bit-tooth and drilling rate for microbits appears to exist over a confining pressure range of 0 to 5,000 psi. INTRODUCTION Laboratory experiments utilizing a small-scale drilling apparatus have demonstrated that penetration rates are reduced considerably as a result of increasing the confining pressure from atmospheric to a few thousand psi?-3 This undesirable situation can, in general, be attributed to a combination of decreased efficiency of chip removal at the bottom of the borehole, increased rock-failure strength, and a possible change in the mechanism of chip generation and rock fragmentation with increasing confining pressure. To more fully understand the principles underlying the last circumstance, it is the purpose of this investigation to experimentally study the mechanism of single bit-tooth penetration into dry rock at low confining pressures and, in particular, to establish the confining pressure at which the penetration mechanism may undergo a brittle to ductile transition for various rock types commonly encountered in drilling. Confining pressure as used here refers to the differential pressure between the borehole fluid pressure and the formation-pore fluid pressure. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Using an experimental apparatus previously described: a single, sharp wedge-shaped tool was forced under a "statically" applied load into an effectively semi-in finite dry rock sample subjected to a prescribed confining pressure. To prevent the invasion of the con fining-pressure fluid into the pores of the rock sample during penetration, the exposed surface of the rock was jacketed with a layer of silicon putty.* Electrical instrumentation incorporated into the apparatus yielded a graphical plot of force on the tool as a function of penetration or displacement of the tool into the rock during an experiment. During the course of the experimentation the following conditions were maintained constant: (1) pore pressure — atmospheric (i.e., the rock was dry); (2) temperature — 75F; (3) rate of loading — essentially static (approximately 0.002 in./sec); (4) bit tooth — a sharp wedge-shaped tool loaded normal to the rock surface; (5) rock surface — smooth and flat; (6) drilling fluid — hydraulic oil; and (7) maximum depth of penetration — approximateiy 0.1 in. In addition, each experiment was performed on a different rock sample so the rock surface is free of a layer of cuttings and of any previous indentation craters. The influence of the corners of a borehole was neglected, since each rock sample was cemented inta a section of aLuminum tubing to simulate a semi-infinite body. A method is presented in which the hydrocarbon weight fractional analyses of the well effluents from a true gas-tip-portion well and a true dark-oil-ring well furnish the basic data for determining the properties of any mixture of production from the two sources. The effect of injected gas on these properties can be computed. Comparison of similar properties of a given well effluent to the properties of mixtures of the basic well effluents will give the relative amounts of production from the two sources and injected gas. Presentation of Problem Oil fields having an area of gas-cap, or light-oil production, over the dark-oil area present a problem of increasing gas-oil ratios during the production of an oil well. The use of pressure maintenance in a field such as above, or a cycling project, wherein residue gas from an absorption plant is injected into the reservoir, adds to the problem, because a part of the increased gas-oil ratio may be due to the production of injected gas. The usefulness of a means to determine the amount of injected gas in a well effluent led to the development of a method in which well-effluent analyses of a true gas-cap-portion well and a true dark-oil-ring well furnish the basic data needed to determine whether injected gas of a known composition is present in a given well effluent. Development op Method The method presented herein is based upon the principle that if two fluids, or well effluents, having different properties are mixed in known proportions by weight, • the properties of their mixtures can be computed. Conversely, if these basic data are known, the properties of a mixed well effauent can be used to compute the relative amounts of each type of well effluent in the mixture. A convenient way of making these computations is to have the fractional analyses of the base well effluents and mixtures expressed in weight fractions The mathematical equations expressing the properties of mixtures will be developed for a two-component system consisting of the well effluents from the dark-oil ring and the gas-cap area. The added effect of injected gas, a third component, will also be developed. The following assumptions have been made in developing the method: 1. The gas-cap and dark-oil fluids exist initially in separate portions of the reservoir. 2. The fluids in each portion exist in a single phase at pressures above the saturation pressure for the dark-oil fluid. 3. The composition of each fluid is substantially constant throughout its respective portion of the reservoir. 4. Changes in reservoir pressure and temperature will not change the composition of the fluid entering the well bore. 5. The injected gas displaces original gas-cap fluid 100 per cent. •• 6. Trona ore at the Westvaco, Wyo., mine of FMC Corp. has been obtained by room-and-pillar methods since the mine began operation. The flat- lying, 10-ft thick trona (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H2O) is covered by 1500 ft of weak shale and sandstone, and extraction of pillars on the retreat quite often throws large amounts of weight onto development workings. Weak shales in the roof and floor fail rapidly, and the mine ribs slough to such an extent that mining often becomes very difficult. When this occurs, efficiency goes down, costs go up, and the risk to men and machinery increases greatly. Difficult mining conditions in the early '60s forced a re-evaluation of all presently known mining techniques in bedded deposits. Many room-and-pillar mining plans were compared with the system in use at that time, but none of them offered a better solution to the roof control problem. Longwall techniques were also seriously considered, but machinery was not available that would cut the hard trona seam and still maintain the productivity obtained from room-and-pillar sections. However, since roof control in the longwall methods appeared to be more satisfactory than that found in room-and-pillar techniques it was believed that a new technique using the longwall principle and based on rock mechanics should be tried rather than previously known pillaring methods.

The Carol concentrator of the Iron Ore Company of Canada was completed in 1962 and through expansions .has become one of the largest iron ore beneficiation plants in the world with a new feed capacity of 147,000 It (149,350 mt) per day. The Carol ore contains specular hematite and magnetite having a bulk density of 166 lb/cu ft (2660 kg/m3) It is crushed to 7 in. (178 mm) for feeding to autogenous mills for subsequent concentration by Humphrey’s s spirals. Mine ore is loaded into 150 It (152 mt) trucks by 10 cu yd (7.65 m3) shovels and then, at a transfer station, is loaded into side-dump rail cars of 100 It (101.6 mt) capacity. Each train is composed of twenty cars and operates completely automatically as it hauls the ore to the primary crushing station, dumps its loads, and returns to the loading station, a 11.5 mile (18.5 km) round trip. The primary crushing station is composed of two 60 in. by 89 in. gyratories installed in 1962 and 1972. Neither crusher has a grizzly ahead of it. Rail cars are dumped into 300 It (305 mt) pockets which contain splitters for spider protection. What few oversize boulders which do not go through the crushers are drilled and blasted. Liners in the dump pocket and the crushed ore pokcet under the crusher are manganese steel. Both crushers are direct driven by 700 hp (5 15 kw) motors, and the hardness of the ore causes them to pull almost their full power. Crushed ore drops into a 160 It (163 mt) pocket equipped with radioactive level control units for low-intermediate, and high level indications. The low level unit stops and starts the apron feeder, the intermediate unit controls the feeder speed, and a high-level reading stops the car dumping. Apron feeders are 72 in. (1. 82 m) wide and are variable speed from 12 to 52 fpm (3. 7 to 15. 8 mpm). They discharge to 60 in. (1.52 m) wide takeaway belts. Crushing capacity, nominal and maximum for each crusher, is 4, 000 ltph (4. 064 mtph) and 4,600 ltph (4,674 mtph). The crusher eccentric is removed by a conventional cart which travels on removable rails. Mainshaft removal and maintenance is done by 65 and 75/10 ton cranes. Mainshaft replacement requires eight hours, a usual time, but concave replacement requires only sixteen hours, a result of a fine maintenance organization. Mantle relining is done at grade next to a repair track. Zinc is used for backing both mantles and concaves. Both the electrical rooms and the dust collectors are located below grade,

Petroleum production in the Mexican fields during 1932, estimated at 32,400,000 bbl., was only 564,000 bbl., or about 2 per cent less than the 1931 total. Production in the northern fields declined approximately 1,100,000 bbl., the Tehuantepec output showed a drop of 340,000 bbl. and the South fields gained 865,000 barrels. Wildcatting continued at a reduced rate, the only successful completion being Presa No. 2 well which at a depth of 1535 ft. produced about 7,000,000 cu. ft. of gas. This well is an offset to Alberca No. 1 completed during 1931. General conditions in the petroleum industry coupled with the additional burden of the 21c per bbl. duty on oil imported into the United States further discouraged development activity in Mexico during 1932. EARLY in the study of the low grade iron formations of Michigan, wide variations in their structure and texture became evident. Because of these variations no simple method of concentration is possible, and those portions of the formations that can be exploited profitably under a given stage of metallurgical progress and existing economic conditions must be searched for carefully. Both structure and texture of the formations have an important bearing on their amenability to beneficiation. By structure is meant the banding planes of easy fracture, the porosity, and the degree of leaching. Texture, which includes grain sizes, shapes, and degree of interlocking, determines the amount of grinding necessary to liberate the mineral grains. INTRODUCTION The Calumet Pumping Station, located on the south side of the Greater Chicago area, is part of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan to accomodate the city's wastewater. The Station consists of two parallel rock caverns, each 18 m high, 20 m wide, and 62 m long, located in Silurian dolomite approximately 91 m below the ground surface. The caverns are oriented N-S with a 24-m-wide pillar between them. Prior to construction, rock mechanics studies were conducted in an L-shaped test adit at the location of the west cavern. The purpo3e of the rock mechanic studies was to characterize the site, particularly the in situ stress field and deformation characteristics of the rock. This information, together with other physical properties of the rock and geologic data, was used to evaluate the stability of the preliminary cavern design, with particular emphasis on cavern orientation, rock reinforcement, and pillar stability. GEOLOGY OF THE SITE Stratigraphy The Chicago area is located on the Kankakee Arch, a broad, gently sloping arch of Paleozoic sediments. Rocks in the project area consist of Silurian dolomites unconformably overlain by Pleistocene glacial deposits. The formations of interest to this study are: - Racine Formation, inter-reef facies. This dolomite is gray- brown, silty, and compact. It contains occasional prominent bedding surfaces. The Racine Formation in the project area varies from 73 to 74 m in thickness.
