The separation of hematite by hysteretic repulsion was first brought to the attention of the public in 1922, by W. M. Mordeyl. Three years later another paper2 was published and after another four years a third paper3 appeared in the South African publications. Certain data were lacking in these papers. In order to continue the work intelligently a knowledge of the shapes of the hysteresis curves for certain minerals was very necessary. This information was not available until the present year4. It was known that reduction of certain ores rendered them amenable to this process of separation but definite data in the form of curves showing exactly the effect of such treatment were lacking. Probably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines5"7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made? and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type. Specular hematite is usually considered nonmagnetic; that is, it is very feebly magnetic as compared to some other minerals. If specular hematite is placed in a steady magnetic field there is no apparent attraction. At the moment of closing the switch, however, some particles may be seen to move. INTRODUCTION This paper deals with the development of the sublevel open stoping (SLOS) method in lead orebodies at the Isa Mine of Mount Isa Mines Limited, during the last ten years. Open stoping in different forms has been used at the Isa Mine for many years. Prior to the period under review, stopes were small, pillars were not always recovered, and scrapers extracted the ore. By the end of the sixties, the use of load-haul-dump units was becoming more widespread. Wagner ST5's were the mucking units for the lead cut and fill stopes. Some of the open stopes in 5 orebody above 13 level had 100 kW slushers, but the more southerly stopes were the sites for the introduction of diesel front-end loaders for extraction. In the early seventies, new methods were used in the block of six stopes in 2 and 5 orebodies between 8 level and 13 level and a trial stoping project was undertaken in 7 orebody between 11 level and 13 level to determine possible stope dimensions for the extraction of the Racecourse orebodies below 13 level. By the mid-19701s, stoping was well underway in 5, 7 and 8 orebodies between 13 level and 15 level, using the 'triplet' system, incorporating cemented hydraulic fill to allow greater pillar recovery. As the eighties were entered, development of the Racecourse orebodies below 15 level commenced, as did preparations for 1 orebody in the upper levels of the north end of the mine. In both cases, the pillar recovery method has been changed to reduce the amount of cemented fill required for pillar recovery. GEOLOGY Most of the lead orebodies at Isa Mine lie chiefly to the north of the central shaft complex. They are bedded sulphide deposits in a host rock called Urquhart Shale, which dips at roughly 650 to the west. The main minerals are galena and sphalerite, with the silver mineral, freibergite, being contained in the galena. To the hangingwall of the sequence are the Black Star orebodies (1, 2 and 5) which are relatively wide, pyritic and with low to above average grade lead. The Racecourse orebodies (6 to 16) lie to the footwall, and have a large variation in width, low to high grade lead, and gradation in the lead to zinc ratio from north to south. Stope outlines are often determined by economic or engineering considerations rather than geological. The published extraction reserves are 56 million tonnes of primary ore, containing 150 grams of silver per tonne, 6.4% lead and 6.5% zinc. Traditionally, it has been regarded as lead ore, although the dominant revenue earner varies from time to time. In the Black Star orebodies, the ore and hangingwalls are more competent and open stoping has long been used. The major Racecourse orebodies which have been open stoped are 7 and 8 orebodies. This has been where the orebodies are wider (to the south) and where hangingwall conditions allow. This latter aspect has been greatly influenced by the presence of 'silica dolomite1. This tough, relatively homogeneous, non-bedded rock is, in fact, the host rock for the copper mineralisation at Mount Isa, and provides a competent hangingwall for some of the lead stopes. While the shale's bedding and jointing has a major influence on the ground conditions, there is a major fault system which causes local problems. The principal virgin stress direction is perpendicular to the bedding, but the local stress situation is complicated because of shielding by filled stopes in the hangingwall copper orebodies and because of the interaction between orebodies being extracted to the footwall. Most development on strike is mined with a 'shanty-back’, with the back being as close to normal to the bedding as possible. This is near parallel to most jointing and the principal stress direction. Figure 1 is a plan view of 14 level north, which provides a representative horizontal section through the orebodies. A typical cross section is shown in Figure 2. The narrow, parallel footwall orebodies can be seen to differ from the wider hangingwall orebodies.

ONE of the most important problems facing the petroleum industry is the profitable recovery of oil that is left underground by the ordinary methods of production. It is true that vast quantities of oil are being recovered from fields previously considered depleted by the pressure restoration method, the most widely applicable -and most successful means of obtaining greater recoveries that has thus far been, developed. But notwithstanding the progress that is being made in the field applica¬tion of this method there is urgent need for a better understanding of the fundamental principles that are involved. To meet this need the Petro¬leum Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines at Bartlesville, Okla., during the past two years has conducted a series of intensive laboratory and field investigations. The larger part of the work has been carried on in the laboratory to supply the much needed information upon fundamental principles, information which few if any of the oil companies are in a position to supply for themselves. In all of this work the Bureau is endeavoring to correlate the results of laboratory investigations with those in the field, using the results of one to guide or check the other. This paper is primarily a progress report, briefly outlining the Bureau's methods of study, the laboratory and equipment in use, the preliminary problems that had to be solved in order to attack the major problems at hand, the methods of attacking some of the major problems, and some of the results of the investigations to date.

The following paragraphs have been extracted from a recent publication of the U. S. Department of Commerce; Miscellaneous Series, No. 65, " German Trade' and the War, " which portrays the industrial, commercial and economic conditions of Germany, at the present time, and has been compiled largely from sources published in Germany. Iron and Steel The Krupp company, the greatest of the German munition works, was faced at the outbreak of the War with the disappearance of its great international business, but this was amply compensated by orders from Germany and her allies, and the activity of the company has been greatly extended. The general meeting of December 1914, voted an increase in the capital to 250,000,000 marks. The gross profits of the company, amounting to 61,900,000 marks in 1912-13, have been more than doubled during the war. The gross profits were 128,260,000 marks in 1914-15 and 143,360,000 in 1915-16. Large sums have been written off; 10,000,000 marks have been placed in the pension fund during the war, and 5,000,000 were appropriated for workmen's dwellings in 1915. Thirteen million marks have been devoted to war assistance in the last three years. The assets of the company were valued at 967,000,000 marks at the end of 1916. For the year 1916-17, the company paid a dividend of only 10 per cent., but set aside 85,425,000 marks for depreciation. The Bismarckhütte in Upper Silesia, capitalized at 16,000,000 marks, with a bonded indebtedness of 7,907,500 marks in 1913-14, reported 3,912,000 marks of net revenue from operation for that year. During the three years of war the revenue increased successively to 8,077,000, 11,805,000, and 16,994,000 marks. While the capital remained unchanged, and the bonded indebtedness was but slightly reduced, the dividends paid during the last four years were increased from 9 per cent. in 1913-14 to 15, 25, and 30 per cent. during the war. During the year 1916-17 the amount written off, chiefly on the works and plant account, was 10,553,000 marks, or nearly as much as the total set aside during the three preceding years. The turnover for that year reached a sum many times the amount of the capital. At the end of 1916 the company's shares were quoted at 275, as against 144 at the end of 1913.

When faced with excavating vast amounts of overburden at its surface coal mining operation in Centralia, Wash., the Washington Irrigation and Development Co. (Widco) chose to utilize a bucket wheel excavator and shiftable conveyor system. In the early 1970s, Widco-a subsidiary of the Washington Water Power Co.-held reserves of sub-bituminous C coal estimated at some 180 million tons (200 million st). Subsequent investigation of the overlying land formations revealed the need to excavate millions of bank cubic yards of material as part of the mining plans.

A method is described for producing single crystals of high-purity beryllium, Be-4.37pct Cu, and Be-5.24 pct Ni. These crystals were prepared for testing in compression parallel to the [0001] by orienting and lapping to within ±3' of arc of the (0001). Microstrain testing apparatus is described along with c axis compression results for ingot purity beryllium, twelve-zone-pass material, and the above-mentioned alloys. Results show no measurable plasticity for the ingot purity material from -196" to 400°C, although some surface traces of (1122) slip was observed at 200°C and above. The twelve-zone-pass material shows substantial microstrain plasticity at 220°C with slip on (1122). Both alloys show significant plasticity at room temperature and above with slip also on (1122) planes. THE two slip systems which normally operate during the plastic deformation of beryllium in the vicinity of room temperature are:' basal slip (0001)(1120) and prism slip . Pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane has been reported for elevated temperatures,'-a but occurs near room temperature only at very high stresses.~ A summary of the available data on the effect of temperature on the critical resolved shear stress for slip on these systems has been compiled by Conrad and Perlmutter.~ It has been postulated6'7 that one of the principal factors contributing to the brittleness of poly crystalline beryllium at temperatures below about 200°C is the difficulty of operating pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane. Hence, detailed information on the operation of such a slip system is important to understanding the brittleness of beryllium. The operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is best accomplished in beryllium by compressing single crystals in a direction parallel to the c axis. In such a test the resolved macroscopic shear strzss on the basal and prism planes is zero and (1012) twinning which is favored by tension along the c axis does not occur. Hence, in c axis compression of beryllium the normal deformation modes are inhibited and the operation of pyramidal slip with a vector inclined to the basal plane is favored. In the present investigation, c axis compression tests were performed on beryllium single crystal as a function of temperature (77" to 700°K), purity (commercial and twelve zone pass), and alloy content (4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni). Presented here is a description of the test techniques employed and the gross mechanical behavior observed. A detailed analysis of the slip traces developed on the surfaces of the deformed specimens during these tests and the results of electron transmission studies of the deformed crystals are given in a separate paper.B PROCEDURE 1) Materials and Preparation. Single crystals about 1 in. diam were prepared of the following materials: commercial-purity beryllium, high-purity beryllium, and two beryllium alloys, one with 4.37 wt pct Cu and the other with 5.24 wt pct Ni. The commercial-purity single crystals were obtained by cutting specimens from large-grained ingot of Pechiney SR material, which is approximately 99.98 pct pure. The high-purity crystals were prepared by floating-zone refining (twelve passes) a rod (7 in. by 1 in, diam) of Pechiney SR grade cast and extruded beryllium. Although an absolute chemical analysis of the zone-refined material was not established, mass spectro-graphic analysis, emission spectrographic analysis, and y activation analysis indicated that it contained in atomic fractions about 5 to 10 ppm each of carbon and oxygen, 1 to 5 ppm each of nickel and iron, and about 1 to 2 ppm of copper, with the remaining residual impurities being less than 1 ppm. Further indication of the purity of this material is provided by the critical resolved shear stress for basal slip, which was approximately 300 psi. The starting material for the alloy single crystals was 1-in.-diam floating-zone-refined (six passes) rod of Pechiney SR grade beryllium. Two such rods were wrapped respectively with sufficient weight of wire of high-purity copper (99.999 pct) or nickel (99.999 pct) to yield a 5 wt pct alloy. A seventh floating-zone pass was then applied to each of the rods to accomplish the initial alloying and an eighth pass for homogenization. Analytical samples were taken from regions of the rod immediately adjacent to where the mechanical test specimens were cut; these indicated 4.37 wt pct Cu and 5.24 wt pct Ni. 2) Crystal Orientation. To avoid the occurrence of basal slip during c axis compression testing, it is necessary to load the crystals as nearly parallel to the c axis as possible. Preliminary c axis compression tests indicated that plastic flow and/or fracture occurred at stresses of the order of 300,000 psi; hence on the basis of a critical resolved shear stress for basal slip of 300 to 400 psi, the maximum crystal misorientation permitted is about 4 to 5' of arc. The value of carbon ratios in determining the boundaries of possible oil deposits appears to have passed the hypothetical stage. The theory that the ratio of fixed carbon in pure coals is an invariable index of incipient metamorphism in both surface and underground rocks and that it may be applied in defining the limits of petroleum, advanced by David White,' has been received with keen interest by many petroleum geologists. Detailed isocarb maps have been prepared of the Pennsylvanian area of North Texas and Eastern Oklahoma by M. L. Fuller.² A similar map of the coal-bearing area of West Virginia is given here. An isocarb3 is a line showing an equal fixed-carbon percentage, pure coal basis; the term has been proposed by David White to supersede a less expressive nomenclature. The term carbon ratio is applied to the pereentage of carbon in pure coal after water and ash have been eliminated. As a comparatively small number of analyses have been made on this basis, it is usually necessary to compute the ratio by dividing the fixed carbon of the proximate analysis by the sum of the fixed carbon and volatile matter of the same analysis. Many thousands of proximate analyses have been made by the West Virginia Geological Survey, covering nearly every county in which coal is found. Numerous others have been made by the U. S. Geological Survey and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, but as uniformity of results is best secured by adhering to one set of analyses, the tests of the West Virginia Survey have been cxclusively used.

The United Verde Copper Company's mine is at Jerome, Ariz. The orebodies arc of the schist replacement type, the main sulfide mass being a large lens-shaped body approximately 7 acres in cross-sectional area. In general, the mineralization is found along the iron schist contact, with the orebodies extending about 1000 ft. along this contact and varying from a few feet to 250 ft. in width. Three types of ore are mined; schist porphyry and the so-called "heavy" or "massive sulfide" ore. Approximately 50 per cent. of the total tonnage mined at present is of the latter class. A representative analysis of this ore indicates 42 to 46 per cent. sulfur. Because of the high sulfur content, blasting in this ore is an extremely hazardous operation. not only does it endanger the lives of men who may be in the mine at blasting time but it also becomes a potential fire menace when timber is in close proximity to shots being fired in these massive sulfides. The origin of the fires of 38 years ago, embers of which are glowing to this day, may perhaps be attributed to dust explosions due to blasting in the massive sulfides of those early square-set stopes. Dust Explosions Dust explosions in coal mines are a common source of mine disasters. That such explosions may be of common occurrence in metal mines is not generally known, but it is known that metal-mine dust will explode and such explosions have been investigated by the U. S. Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station. Samples of "heavy sulfide" ore from the United Verde mine were used in the tests. After studying the results of the tests it was concluded1 that: 1. Dust explosions were initiated in sulfide ore dust in the gallery with a charge of as low as 75 g. of 60 per cent. gelatin dynamite. 2. The exploding dust generated considerable pressure.

FORMAL theories of yielding and flow have been developed to describe thermally activated plastic flow in metal crystals.'-" hey are all based on Becker's' original idea that thermal fluctuations aid the applied stress in overcoming internal barriers to flow and lead to the following relation. where j is the strain rate; C is a constant which includes a frequency factor, the entropy, the number of flow units, and the amount of strain associated with each successful fluctuation; E(T) is the activation energy associated with flow, and is a decreasing function of the applied stress, 7; k is Boltzmann's constant; and T is the temperature in OK. The various theories differ mainly in the model chosen and in the nature of the relationship between the applied stress and the activation energy. Beckerl and Orowan' suggest a relationship of the form E a(Ti — t)2, where .ri represents the stress required for flow without the aid of thermal fluctuations; Kauzmann,3 Cottrel1,5 and Seeger6,7 suggest E a(t — t) ; Fisher8 suggests E while Cottrell and Bilby4 suggest a more complex relationship between E and 7. Additional data are needed to test these various theories., esweciallv- in view of Dorn's9 ork. which indicates that the activation energy for creep is independent of the stress and strain. The present paper presents the stress-strain data derived from incremental loading of magnesium single crystals in tension and direct shear, in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K. Incremental loading was employed in order that the creep component of the strain could be determined. Stress-strain curves of aluminum10-13 and copper" single crvstals. derived from incremental loading tests, have been found to be in agreement with those obtained by the more conventional constant strain rate or loading rate tests. The sampling of disseminated copper deposits has been describeu often but the method of combining assays to give the true shape and value of the orebody as it will be mined has received less attention. As the ore mined during five or ten years at several of the great disseminated properties has averaged materially lower in grade than the published estimates, the question of the sampling and estimating of these orebodies seems timely. In this paper, attention is given particularly to factors that may cause errors in the final estimate. Sampling of diamond-drill holes, churn-drill holes, and underground workings is briefly described in the first part of the paper; then the method of combining assays to give the average grade and tonnage that will be mined is taken up in some detail. The necessity of study of the geology of the deposit and of probable costs is emphasized. Finally, the methods of calculating tonnages are outlined. DlAMOND-DRILL SAMPLING There are three main requisites for accurate diamond-drill sampling. First, the core should be removed and the hole cleaned out at the beginning of every sampling interval, usually 5 ft. (1.5 m.). After the rods are let down, water should be run through them until it becomes clear. The water must be clear before drilling starts. 'In this way the material knocked down from the sides of the hole by the descending rods is washed away, instead of being left to salt the sludge sample. The second requisite is to save all the sludge and all the core from every sampling interval. Where the material is uniformly heavy, the cuttings will settle suffciently in a box, through which the sludge flows s1owly.l Where part of the material is too light to settle readily, the sludge should be run into barrels, and allowed to settle until the water becomes clear. Then the clear water is siphoned off, and the sludge evaporated to dryness over a slow fire, sacked, and assayed.2 To obtain

Gentlemen.-The Institute was founded 54 years ago "with the object of promoting the arts and sciences connected with the economic production of the useful minerals and metals and the welfare of those employed in these industries by means of meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate by means of publications among its members and associates the information thus obtained," At least once a year it is well to take stock of our assets, review our performance and determine how well we are now carrying out the purposes of our Founders. There can be no question as to the work the Institute has done and is doing in promoting the arts and sciences in the fields of mining and metallurgy. One needs only to contrast the methods, the labor and the costs of a half century ago with those now to visualize how far we have gone in the development of accurate technology and sound economics in mineral and metal production. The great mines, mills and smelters of the present, handling individually thousands of tons per day, would' have been impossible except for the accumulation of knowledge, the development of theory, and the improvement in practice that has characterized the period since the foundation of the Institute. The United States has prospered in the last half century greatly, and this has been due not merely to the possession of great natural resources, but to these resources being reduced to possession and put to work. The absence of customs barriers and the freedom of trade across the whole width of this great continent has been an important factor in the growth of our wealth. Unrestricted interchange of goods has permitted each citizen to draw on the resources of the whole country. However, these are but subsidiary causes of prosperity. The free interchange of scientific and technical data, by making the whole body of facts and theory available to each worker, has made this quick and unrivaled development possible. In promoting this free trade in knowledge the Institute may claim a large place without fear of denial. The .72 volumes of TRANSACTIONS, the special volumes, the bulletins and the other publications that have been issued, include a store of knowledge of the arts and sciences related to the production and use of metals and minerals not duplicated elsewhere. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. By independent control of temperature and water vapor pressure, it is shown that charge depends primarily upon relative humidity, not on temperature or water pressure alone. All the effects of temperature changes other than modification of humidity are apparently small. However, humidity control can be achieved through manipulation of the more tractable variable, temperature. Both temperature and humidity are important variables in electrical separations. Some of their effects have been described in general by Fraas1,2 and by Ralston.3 The influence of temperature and humidity may be considered a problem in industrial separations because humidity, especially, is not normally controlled, hence leads to unpredicted quality control problems. The problem is significant whether the separation is based on conductivity differences or on contact electrification. There is no doubt that water adsorbs from humid atmospheres onto mineral surfaces resulting in conductivity changes.'-8 An empirical relationship between conductivity and humidity is1.4-6,8 where a and b are constants peculiar to the substrate, and s and h are the conductivity and relative humidity respectively. Some authors have taken advantage of differences in a and b among minerals to make or propose electrodynamic separations in which h is the key control variable. Fraasl,2 reported that the charge developed on quartz and feldspar through contact with aluminum is sensitive to humidity, as illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. Coal mine bumps are normally associated with pillar mining under moderate or deep cover. Severe bumps at Sunnyside, however, have not been confined to pillar lines. Many have occurred in virgin development and in localities a long way from active pillar workings. As early as 1918 bumps in virgin territory were attributed to the faulted structure in the Sunnyside area.' Sunnyside is an old property, mined for more than 60 years. Both man-made and natural conditions contribute greatly to bump occurrences, and loss of life and great destruction of workings have resulted from some unusual bumps in recent years. Before Kaiser Steel acquired the Sunnyside Mines in 1950, about 21 million tons of coal had been extracted. Large areas had been worked out and equally large areas first-mined. As demand for coking coal gradually diminished, extensive blocks were shut down, and during the low production period of the 1930's mining on a very limited scale was confined to a section of the property close to the coal tipple. Following purchase of the property Kaiser Steel developed the mines into a fully modernized operation. The worked out and first mined areas covered about four square miles extending five miles along the strike and up to one and a half miles down dip from the outcrop. The sections with favorable mining conditions and clean coal had been largely extracted under the selective mining system imposed by economic conditions and the lack of cleaning plant facilities. Large reserves remained on the fringes of the worked out sections and in areas under deep cover and difficult roof. There were also considerable reserves in first-mined areas. In recent years much of Sunnyside's daily output of 7000 to 8000 tons has been derived from the partially mined localities. Many bumps have occurred when pillars have been pulled within the first-mined areas and on the fringes. The bumps have been associated with retreating pillar lines backing up against old workings and pillar lines in old first-mined areas backing up against highly stressed oversized barrier pillars surrounded by smaller pillars. In some parts of the property the upper Sunnyside seam was extensively worked in the past, and sizable areas of old works overlie the present lower seam workings. Abutment pressures from barrier pillars and pillar remnants are transmitted to the lower seam, contributing to bumps and squeeze conditions. Cover: The terrain is exceedingly rough, and cover varies considerably over relatively short horizontal distances. For example, at No. 1 mine the 2000-ft cover line is ony 2700 ft from the coal outcrop, and at No. 2 mine the cover over the main hoisting slope increases from 1000 to 2000 ft in a horizontal span of 1200 ft. Cover over the present mining sections ranges from several hundred feet in the valleys to 2500 ft under the crest of the divides. A short distance ahead of Sunnyside's deepest development down dip the cover reaches 3000 ft or more.

The production of oil in Colombia during 1933 was at the lowest level since the completion of the loop of the Andian pipe line in 1927. The commercial production amounted to 13,157,641 bbl., all of which was produced from the Infantas and La Cira structures of the Tropical Oil Company. One of the most important developments was the discovery of what may be commercial production on the Colombian Petroleum (Gulf) Company's Tarra anticline on the Barco Concession in eastern Colombia near the Venezuelan border. This promises to become the second commercially productive area developed in Colombia and, perhaps, one of major importance. Applications made in 1931 for concessions under the new Colombian petroleum law were ratified covering the Putana application of the Tropical Oil Co. and others of local Colombian and French interests west of the Carare River. On none of these concessions has any development work yet been initiated. South American Gulf Oil Company The following information covering the activities of the South American Gulf Oil Co. was furnished by E. S. Bleecker, chief geologist of the company. Magdalena Valley.—No development work was undertaken during the year either on the Valenzuela property acquired from the Colombian Syndicate or on the lands obtained from the Leonard Oil Development Co. near the Sogamoso River. The Valenzuela property was relinquished and a portion of the material was removed therefrom to the Leonard property near by. Colombian Petroleum Co.—The Colombian Petroleum Co., controlled by the Gulf interests, pursued an active development campaign on the Chaux-Folsom or so-called Barco Concession in the Department of North Santander. The drilling of the first well was begun early in the year on the north Petrolea dome of the Tarra anticline and at 490 ft. a heavy flow of oil, gas and salt water was encountered. Deeper drilling, resulting in greater circulating distance and pressure, has directed attention to the advantages of the study of properties and control of rotary muds, which until recently have not had much consideration. One fundamental property of muds is viscosity, and viscosity is influenced by the quantity and character of colloidal material and can be controlled by chemical treatment. Colloidal Matter of Rotary Muds Two types of colloids are found in muds; the hydrophobic and the hydrophilic. Hydrophobic colloids do not associate intimately with water and are sensitive to small quantities of electrolytes. Hydrophilic colloids associate intimately with water, but are not so sensitive to electrolytes. The colloidal particles of rotary muds are derived from clay; In clay the particles may range in size from submicroscopic to macroscopic; a substance is a clay if the greater proportion of the particles are within the size limits prescribed for clay. The larger particles are inert and have no effect on the viscosity of normal hydrophobic colloidal muds. There are two theories accounting for the colloidal properties of clay-water suspensions: (1) the physical theory, that clay in water is a coarse colloidal suspension, and (2) Ashley's1 theory, that clay is a granular material with a colloidal gel surrounding the crystalline grains. The most important colloidal substances known to exist in clays besides the clay particles are: (1) colloidal silica, (2) colloidal alumina, (3) colloidal ferric hydroxide, (4) colloidal silicates, and (5) colloidal organic matter. Plasticity, a peculiar property of clay-water suspensions, is due to the colloidal particles. It is commonly (although not with strict accuracy) measured in terms of viscosity, and depends upon the amount and the state of flocculation of the colloidal matter present in the suspension. The term "survival" in the title means the preservation of a society in which men are free from the political and economic restraints that characterize totalitarian systems, be they communist, socialist or facist. It means the ability to withstand the enemy's offensives in the fields of propaganda, commercial competition and, if necessary, war. The temptation to substitute "victory" for "survival" is great but a realistic appraisal of the creeping socialism and demagoguery that pervade our time indicates that we may have to be content with survival in status quo. "Mineral strength" means assurance that adequate supplies will be available to meet all the contingencies of cold and hot wars. The overall mineral position of the U. S. viewed in the light of these premises is far from secure. It is true that we are the leading producing and consuming nation of the world, but the Soviet Union is gaining and the Sino-Soviet Bloc confronts us with a sobering potential. The emergence of the Common Market in Europe as an economic and political unit places a third independent entity into the competition. Our total mineral output continues on an up- ward trend but the reverse is true in certain strategic commodities. Moreover, consumption is moving ahead faster than production so that there is increasing dependence on imports which has significant adverse geopolitical connotations. There is widespread belief that our resources can at least maintain present levels of self-sufficiency during this critical period in world history, but social dreamers, the labor monopoly, and trade and taxation policies have discouraged aggressive activity in exploration and development, and access to essential foreign sources is threatened by a variety of circumstances. Our stockpiles, belatedly built up to achieve minimum protection against shortages in time of war, are under. political attack and threatened with partial destruction on the basis of what are at best uncertain assumptions regarding the new: look of global warfare.

GRIM, CHAIRMAN-Has anyone a particularly fruitful point to make or question to ask on any of the papers that have been presented at the two sessions held on Monday and one held this morning? GENESIS OF ENDELLITE T. S. LOVERING-I think we are all a little bit embarrassed when we are asked if we have any particularly fruitful point for discussion; I just have a point. I believe that yesterday Bates said that he had found endellite in only hydrothermally altered rocks-he did not find it in sedimentary rocks-but this morning I heard Victor Allen say something about it as the normal product of weathering, and I am confused. My question concerns the genesis of endellite. I want to know whether endellite is found as a normal product of weathering. I understood from the paper by Bates that it was not a product of weathering and in the paper by Victor Allen* endellite was said to be a product of normal weathering. Did I misinterpret these two papers? T. F. BATES-I did not intend to state or imply that endellite is formed only under hydrothermal conditions. We have been studying the North Carolina deposits extensively and I feel that they illustrate very well the result of normal weathering processes acting on pegmatitic material. The resulting clay seems to be largely endellite or halloysite, almost to the exclusion of kaolinite. I may have misled you in the statement I made toward the end of my talk, to the effect that of all the kaolinic clays we have investigated with the electron microscope, we have not yet found halloysite or endellite in samples from clay deposits that are definitely sedimentary in origin.
