The McDermitt mine was found as a separate mercury ore-bearing occurrence approximately 305 m (1000 ft) northeasterly and in a different geologic setting from the old Cordero mine, which had been the district's major producer. The following briefly describes the discovery of the new deposit and the Placer Amex lnc. involvement. The Cordero mining property was under lease by Sierra Mineral Management from the owner Fred H. Lenway in February 1971, when the property was brought to the attention of Placer Amex Inc. (known at that time as American Exploration and Mining Co.) by Richard F. Hewlett of Sierra Mineral Management. The property was first examined by Amex geologists in the spring of 1971, who reported favorably on the project. During that year, Sierra Minerals Management had retained Dr. Larry Walters as a consultant. He proceeded to drill test mercury soils anomalies which he had found northeast of the old Cordero mine in an area overlain by recent alluvium and gravel. An area known as the D area was subsequently blocked out and ascribed a tonnage of about 18 1 kt (200,000 st) which occurs in the vicinity of the eastern edge of the currently defined McDermitt ore body. This mineralization was found in flat lying mercury-bearing lakebeds, unlike the steep structurally controlled ore which was mined in the old Cordero mine. It became apparent to Placer Amex that since the chances of much more extensive ore were good in such a geologic environment, additional exploration was warranted. A joint venture was formed in October 1972 by American Exploration and Mining Co. and Sierra Mineral Management to further explore the Cordero property. The project exploration was fully funded and managed by Amex. Sampling began by Placer Amex in the D area where an open trench had exposed the lakebed ore. Visible cinnabar could not account for the high-grade mercury assays taken from the trench, and an unknown mercury mineral was suspected. Subsequent work established the presence of a chlorine-bearing mercury sulfide which may have enriched the lakebeds as a secondary supergene mineral. Early identification of the mercury-bearing mineral corderoite (Hg3Cl2S,) aided in the geologic concepts for the ore occurrence and was helpful in exploring for the expansion of the D area. Corderoite was found occurring with cinnabar in the lakebeds, and in places it is a major contributor. Specimens of the unique ore were given to Dr. Eugene E. Foord and Dr. Pieter Berendsen at Stanford University, who subsequently identified the chemical and crystallographic makeup of the new mineral and described it for the first time as a naturally occurring substance. Metallurgical work on mercury recovery from the newly described mineral was carried out by the Placer Development Ltd. laboratories in Vancouver, and an acceptable recovery system was worked out together with a planned mill design. Step out drilling from the D area by Placer Amex Inc. encountered extensive flat lying lakebed ore. The McDermitt ore body, as subsequently defined by drilling, was found to contain 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of open pittable ore, containing approximately 5 kg/t (10 lb per st) Hg. The ore body gently dips to the north and is found lying mainly in claybeds just above an opalite breccia blanket which overlies the earlier volcanics. Some ore is also found in the opalite breccia. The mine and mill were constructed under an operating joint venture with Placer Amex Inc. and Sterling Mineral Ventures, and production began in June 1975 at the rate of 20,000 flasks per year. The mine is currently in progress.

The recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Mur-freesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.—The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett,' but they did not class it as dia-mondiferous, although Branner suggested that it might be. Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. Colorado today is the largest coal producing state west of the Mississippi River. Developments around Denver began about 1860, and the building of railroads created a good market for the new industry. The development of the smelter and steel industries near Pueblo increased the demand. The available records are not complete, and all the data found are shown in Table 76. [ ]

Obsolescence in the mineral world is virtually nonexistent if the term is taken to mean that a mineral commodity, once established in commerce and industry, subsequently has fallen into disuse. We are living in an age of minerals. Each generation puts an increasing array of mineral-based commodities, in larger quantities, to more uses than ever before. Bastnasite, a museum mineral and a collector's item a few years ago, is now produced in quantity at Mountain Pass, Calif. Uranium, a minor byproduct of vanadium mining in the Rocky Mountain plateau area before World War 11, has grown to be a leading mineral product in several western States. And finally the total quantity and value of minerals both in the United States and in the World establish new records almost yearly. Surely the mineral industry as a whole is not obsolescent in our economy. Nevertheless, there are particular uses for particular minerals that are obsolescent and some applications have been supplanted entirely. Tin does not occupy the prominent place in foil manufacture that it once did, and the schoolboy's slate left most classrooms before the oldest of us were born.

Used in combination with conveyor belt haulage, bucket wheel excavators offer unusual possibilities for low excavation and haulage costs. Originating in Germany, these machines are now in use or on order for Australia, Northern Rhodesia, the Belgian Congo, Italy, Yugoslavia, France, Belgium, Indonesia, and the Union of South Africa. A diamond mine in South Africa that has been using German bucket wheel excavators since 1928 purchased American cable-way excavators and American scraping equipment after the war. Operating cost for this equipment was double that for the bucket wheel machines operating in the same mines with crawler-mounted stackers. Machines built and operated in the U. S. are, as far as the writer knows, confined to the northern Illinois coal field, where they are used in conjunction with large shovels to strip overburden too high to be reached by the 30 to 40-yd shovels. Their long stacker belts can deposit the spoil far enough behind the coal face to avoid slides, in such a manner as to make reclaiming the land easier. These large, specialized machines are now being made by Bucyrus-Erie Co. but are not adaptable to many open pit mining situations.

THE change in mechanical properties accompanying quench aging of carbon in a iron has been known for a number of years. Since the amount of carbon involved is rather small, however, no measurements could be made to correlate the property change with the state of precipitation of the carbide. Indeed, until a few years ago it was not plain which property might be used to indicate the state of the progress of precipitation. Some years ago the internal friction of solid solutions of carbon in a iron was demonstrated, and the use of this phenomenon to ascertain the amount of carbon in solid solution at any given time was developed. Shortly afterward the author made a number of measurements in which changes in electrical resistance, thermoelectric emf, and hardness were determined simultaneously with the internal friction (and hence with the precipitation) ? A little later Dijkstra and Wert measured the change in magnetic coercive force accompanying aging.' The present work was undertaken to inquire into the changes in yield strength accompanying aging. The work was done on specimens made of Puron. These specimens were 0.05 in. in diam and about 6 in. long. During the past few years the combination of continuous billet casting with in-line reduction has been studied and several machines have been built with this capability included in the design parameters. (1,2,3,4,5) In-line reduction and continuous casting in combination are obvious and attractive. As pinch rolls are already in place for the continuous casting operation, it can be readily seen that a redesign of the mechanical and electrical equipment of the pinch rolls is all that is necessary to have in-line rolling. There have been numerous in-line reduction experiments conducted by simply increasing the pinch roll pressure on existing machines. (6,7,8,9) These generally failed to produce quality billets and often resulted in internal metallurgical defects (Figure 1).

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of cold-working and annealing treatments upon the occurrence of preferred orientation in annealed brass wire. The subject has received less consideration than has the same phenomenon in annealed brass sheet or strip, and perhaps very properly so in view of the obvious and undesired results obtained in the forming or drawing of strip having preferred orientation, which results are in contrast with the lack of any spectacular visual evidence in wire. The factors of cold-working and annealing that control preferredness in strip are naturally expected to function similarly in wire. Indeed, one might expect the condition to be commoner in annealed wire, because the severity of the cold-working between anneals in commercial Practice is usually much greater for wire than for strip. For example, a wire that is to be finished in the annealed condition on a diameter of 0.040 in. is commonly subjected to a final reduction of 90 per cent between the last two anneals, the large reduction being accomplished in the successive drafts of a multiple-die machine. Wire for rivets, for instance, on 0.125-in. diameter, although given a slight reduction of about Io per cent after the final anneal, may have been given a prior reduction of 75 to 80 per cent. Barrettl states the fiber axis of annealed 70-30 brass wire to be [111], with some indication of [IOO] as a secondary fiber axis. Croft and Sachs2 have reported briefly on some differences in brass wire with random and with preferred orientations. They showed statistical plots of the twin-band angles with respect to the wire axis or direction of drawing as observed on an axial plane. They also pointed out that the resistance of the wire to corrosion-cracking when externally stressed and exposed to a mercurous nitrate solution decreased as the degree of the preferred orientation increased. Material and PRocedure All the wire for the investigation was processed from one portion as cut for extrusion from a cast billet of the following analysis: 70.13 per cent copper; 0.01 lead; 0.01 iron; 0.02, nickel; 29.83 zinc (by difference). The billet section, 8 in, in diameter, was extruded hot to 3/4-in. diameter, after which it was processed by alternate cold-drawing and annealing treatments as indicated in Fig. I. The earliest anneals in process were at about 1100°F. and the next to the last reductions by drawing were 58 per cent. The diameter of the finally annealed wire was 0.132 in. Semifinal anneals were at 800°F., 950°F. and 1100°F. and reductions of 47.5, 74, 83.5 and 89.5 per cent were employed in drawing to 0.132 in. The final anneals were at 87s°F., 1050°F. and 1250°F. and were

The discovery of oil in the Powder Wash stricture in northwestern Colorado late in the fall of 1936 is the most important development in Colorado since oil was first discovered in the Moffat dome in the same county in 1923. The Powder Wash structure gives promise of developing into an oil and gas field of major proportions and is of particular interest because the oil was found in Tertiary rocks of Eocene age, which heretofore had been productive in the Rocky Mountain region of gas only, and very few of the many structures of this kind have been tested because it was believed that oil production probably would be confined to rocks of Cretaceous age only, and these were, in most instances, at excessive drilling depths. Of the natural elemental surfur deposits of the world, volcanic deposits are not only the most spectacular, but probably the most widely distributed. As defined for the purposes of this paper, volcanic sulfur deposits include those associated with all phases of volcanic activity, including eruptive flows, and fumarolic and hot spring deposits. The line of demarcation between the latter and sedimentary deposits is not always clearly defined. Although volcanic sulfur has played an important role for centuries, serving as essentially the only source of sulfur, currently it is considered as purely marginal material. Volcanic deposits were relegated to this position by the advent of Frasch sulfur into world markets, which established sulfur prices and annual production levels with which volcanic sulfur cannot compete, Since early in the 20th century commercial interest in volcanic deposits of sulfur has been high only when premium markets are available. This occurred in the early 1950s and is the case at present. Considerable effort is currently being expended to establish new producers of volcanic sulfur, and to expand current operations or reactivate previous ones.
