In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

The recrystallization and grain-growth phenomena of cold-worked metals have considerable industrial importance because of their role in the fabrication of metals. For this reason, and because of the general academic interest in the subject, these processes have received considerable attention since the time of J. E. Stead's paper1 on The Crystalline Structure of Iron and Steel. There are considerable differences of opinion regarding the theory of recrystallization and grain growth and also differences in the observation of the modus operandi of the processes themselves. The value of many of the existing quantitative data on grain growth is decreased by the failure to distinguish between the grain sizes just after complete recrystallization and those resulting from coalescence. For this reason also, the value of the diagrams of stable grain sizes, like those produced by Bass and Glocker2 and Czochralski3, is lessened in so far as an interpretation of the facts of recrystallization is concerned. It is hoped that the data presentcd in this paper will help to clarify and to simplify the facts relating to recrystallization, and at the same time will show that some of the present-day conceptions are untenable. A paper on the theory of recrystallization, with additional data, will be completed in the near future by the writers. Since the literature on the subject has been adequately and frequently reviewed, the only referenccs to it in this paper will be those necessary in the discussion of the data presented.

Improved apparatus, methods, and experimental techniques for determining the capillary pressure-saturation relation are described in detail. In this connection a new multi-core procedure has been developed which simplifies the experimental work in the study of relatively homogeneous reservoirs. The basic theory concerning the Leverett capillary pressure function has been extended and has been given some practical application. Some discussion is presented to indicate the relationship of relative permeability to capillary pressure, and to provide a new description of capillary pressure phenomena by introducing the concept of the psi function. INTRODUCTION For the purposes of this paper the capillary character of a porous medium will be defined to express the basic properties of the system, which produce observed results of fluid behavior. These basic properties may be classified in the following manner, according to their relationship to: (a) The geometrical configuration of the interstitial spaces. This involves consideration of the packing of the particles, producing points of grain contact, and variations in pore size distribution. The packing itself is often modified by the secondary processes of mineralization which introduces factors of cementation, and of solution action which causes alteration of pore structure. (b) The physical and chemical nature of the interstitial surfaces. This involves consideration of the presence of interstitial clay coatings, the existence of non-uniform wetting surfaces; or, more generally, a consideration of the tendency towards variable interaction between the interstitial surfaces and the fluid phases saturating the interstitial spaces. (c) The physical and chemical properties of the fluid phases in contact with the interstitial surfaces. This involves consideration of the factors of surface, interfacial and adhesion tensions; contact angles; viscosity; density difference between immiscible fluid phases; and other fluid properties. Fine grained, granular, porous materials such as found in petroleum reser~oir rock possess characteristics which are expressible by (1) permeability, (2) porosity, and (3) the capillary pressure-saturation behavior of immiscible fluids in this medium. These three measurable macroscopic properties depend upon the microscopic properties enumerated above in a manner which defines the capillary character. Systems of capillary tubes or regularly packed spheres may be thought of as ideal and numerous references can be cited in which exact mathematical formulations are developed to show the relationships governing the static distribution and dynamic motion of fluids in their interstitial spaces. The capillary character of non-ideal porous systems such as reservoir rock also is basic in determining the behavior of fluids contained therein; although, in general, the connection is not mathematically derivable but must be approached through indirect experimental measurement. This paper gives consideration to the evaluation of petroleum reservoir rock capillary character. The methods employed may be applied to the solution of problems in other fields, and the conclusions reached should contribute to the basic capillary theory of any porous system containing fluid phases. In this paper, a modification of the core analysis method of capillary pressure is employed and it is intended to show that the capillary character of reservoir rock can be expressed in terms of experimental quantities. A very general method of interpretation correlating the capillary pressure tests with fundamental characteristics such as rock texture, surface areas, permeability, occasionally clay content and cementation is introduced. Eventually an attempt is made for establishing a method of deriving relative permeability to the wetting phase from capillary pressure data. The experimental evaluation of capillary character must be approached in a statistical manner if reservoir properties are to be inferred from data on small cores. This is implied by the heterogeneous character of most petroleum reservoirs, and suggests that considerable intelligence should be applied in core sampling. Finally, this paper supports the view that once the capillary character of a given type of reservoir rock has been established by core analysis, fluid behavior can then be inferred in other similar rock. Although no great progress has been made in establishing what variation can be tolerated without altering the basic fluid behavior properties, evidence will be presented to indicate that certain reservoir formations are sufficiently homogenous with respect to capillary character that the data obtained on one core will be useful in predicting the properties of other cores of similar origin. Tests have shown that cores under consideration can vary widely with respect to porosity and permeability and still be considered similar in capillary character. INTERGRANULAR corrosion in corrosion-resistant chromium-nickel steels has been widely discussed in the last few years. So far as the author knows, nothing has been published which definitely shows that this tendency can be eliminated, although suggestions have been made that a remedy is possible if certain specifications are satisfied. Strauss, Schottky and Hinueber1 suggested an increase in chromium content to an extent that would prevent the impoverishment of chromium on carbide precipitation sufficient to cause impaired corrosion resistance in the matrix. Pilling2 suggested an increase in nickel, so that the stability of the austenite matrix would be increased. Aborn and Bain,3 say that "intergranular attack-may be eliminated by preventing carbide precipitation (e. g., by lowering the carbon content or somehow raising its solubility) or by precipitating it permanently under conditions which will not remove chromium from solid solution so drastically at any points." In a later paper Aborn and Bain4 state that many different metallic elements, tungsten, vanadium, copper, aluminum, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium, have been added in small per-centages to increase the stability of these alloys, but that it has been reported that according to the copper sulfate test these added elements act only to retard the intergranular corrosion, and that increased nickel and chromium contents have similar effects. Newell5 showed that the lower the quenching temperature before reheating, the less severe was the intergranular attack.

Oil produced in Iraq for export during 1938 was 31,354,090 bbl., or a daily average of 85,901 bbl; This is an increase of 182,614 bbl., or 0.5 per cent over 1937. All oil exported was produced from the Kirkuk field. The Khanaqin Oil Company, Ltd., a subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, Ltd., continued to supply local market requirements from its Naft Khaneh field in the Transferred Territories. Slightly more than 32,000,000 bbl. was produced in Iraq, a small part of which was used in field operations. During the year 12 wells were completed and 9 wells were drilling at the end of the year. Of the completions, 5 were producers and 1 was an oil-water level observation well in proved fields, and 6 were listed as failures. Basrah Concession The outstanding event of the year was the granting, by the Kingdom of Iraq, of a 75-year concession embracing approximately 89,000 sq. miles to the Basrah Petroleum Company, Ltd., a British company with French and American participation. The concession covers all parts of the Kingdom, its territorial waters, islands, submerged lands, and its interest in the Neutral Zone separating Iraq and Saudi Arabia that

BECAUSE gold is a compound mineral praised by philosophers and all wise men as being of the highest perfection among all mixed minerals, and because of its great beauty, it is the universal opinion that it possesses extraordinary powers which are beneficial to man. THE Hercules mine is located in the northeastern section of the Coeur d'Alene district, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of the town of Burke, Idaho. Surface indications of the ore deposit were first discovered in 1886, but regular mine production was not started until 1902 and was continuous until April 1925, when the known ore had been extracted. Incomplete records show that from 1912 until operations were suspended the mine produced 2 1/2 million tons of ore containing 9.4 pct lead and 7.7 oz of silver per ton, together with an estimated 2 pct zinc, 0.3 pct copper, and 20 pct iron. This operation was the first in a series of mining enterprises culminating in October 1947 with the consolidation of Day Mines, Inc. In the same year it was decided to unwater the levels below the collar of the Hercules shaft in the hope of finding some indication of a recurrence of ore. The unwatering operation has been described in a previous paper.1 The initial exploration, following recapture of the workings, showed sufficient promise to warrant a detailed study of the mineralogy with modern techniques.

IT is customary to ascribe two general modes of occurrence to natural gas, namely shale. gas which, as the name indicates, is found in' shale, and reservoir gas, which occurs ill sandstone, conglomerate and dolomitic limestone. Both of these types are found in the Cleveland district. The shale gas has been produced on a small scale for a long period of years, probably dating back as far as 1883. Shale gas is a low-pressure gas, small in volume with variable pressure, and is limited to no definite horizon. It is generally independent of oil, may last for a long time, and is not dependent to any great extent on the structure of the rocks. There are many such wells in the district which range from 400 to 1,840 ft. in depth, although most have been completed at about 800 ft. This indicates that the wells pass through the Cleveland and Chagrin shales into the Huron or Portage shale of the Upper Devonian. During the last 2 years great interest has developed in a deeper-seated reservoir gas. What is commonly called reservoir gas is generally a high-pressure gas occurring in large volume at a definite horizon. Oil may, or may not, be associated with the gas, and in most regions in which reservoir gas is found, the geological structure is of great importance. This type of gas occurs in all large fields such as those of West Virginia which have been supplying Cleveland until the recent discovery of local gas at great depths in commercial amounts.

Although it has been apparent to me for a long time that too great weight was currently given to the silicon-contents of foundry-iron, and that the theory of the control by silicon of the carbon-contents of cast-iron is unsound, or that, at best, the influence of silicon is too small to be of much practical value as a guide in foundry-work, it never seemed to me desirable to enter the lists against either the " silicon-fad " or the theory, for the reason that I had neither the time nor the facilities to prove my position, nor any better theory to offer. But since Mr. Summers has taken the step, it seems but right that I should give such facts as are at hand in support of his contention. At the same time I do not think these are enough to prove the case if the contrary proposition were not itself, as it seems to me, based on insufficient evidence. Both Keep's and Turner's conclusions seem to be drawn from irons carrying less than the normal amount of carbon; Turner's " base " being, moreover, a steel rather than a pig-iron, and both the white base and the ferro-silicon of Keep being so low in carbon that compounds of them would not give a material approaching the carbon-contents of a normal casting, and having, therefore, little value as showing the effects of silicon on foundry-irons, even if his samples were treated under the same conditions as those to which pig-metal is subjected in making castings.

The practice of the cyanide-process of gold-extraction has brought to light many important contradictions of familiar chemical analogies, which still obscure both the theory and the practice of the art with distinctions subtler and more difficult to make or follow than those which delighted the heart of the old-time metaphysician. Yet Nature herself has drawn these distinctions; and if we hope to succeed in this modern search for the Golden Fleece, we must be able to follow her through the winding labyrinth. There are so many phases of this question that I shall attempt to touch on only one of them at this time, but it is one that lies at the root of many others. In reviewing my paper on " The Solution and Precipitation of Cyanide of Gold,"* Mr. E. B. Wilson contends† that" in the solution of gold by means of alkaline cyanides the various reactions are determined, as to their order and intensity, by the relative position of the elements concerned in the electro-chemical series, or series of voltaic tension." In a modified form this statement is probably true. That is to say, the difference of electrical potential in any closed electrical circuit determines the nature of the reactions which ensue. But the matter is not so simple as Mr. Wilson assumes. Recent investigations show that the order of the metals in the electro-chemical series depends not only on the nature of the elements themselves, but also on the chemical composition of the solution in which they are placed; its degree of concentration; its temperature; and, in the case of gases, on the pressure. This study extends our information on solid-liquid slurries to the flow of sand in horizontal fractures. Inasmuch as this is basically an unsteady-state process, a comprehensive photographic study was undertaken in a 10-ft windowed cell to determine if the basic flow regimes described for steady-state flow in pipes applied to the subject process. Since the number of potential variables far exceeds the capacity of a single study, emphasis has been placed on the effects of sand concentration, oil viscosity and oil flow rate. The extensive photographic evidence obtained has proven very valuable in gaining an insight into the basic flow mechanisms. Being able to follow visually the flow characteristics that accompany the quantitative data is valuable in the application of the results. Although the use of dimensionless parameters was carefully investigated. it was found that the data obtained could be more easily, and as accurately, correlated by judicious use of the dimensional variables investigated. However, a study into the feasibility of scaling slurry flow was made in the event this technique is justified in future investigations. The data presented show that the pressure behavior observed in solids transport in pipes basically applies to slurry flow in horizontal fractures. The roles of the parameters are altered but a basic equivalence exists. The most significant correlating parameter was the oil viscosity (µo) and the bulk velocity of the slurry (vn), expressed as ''µv" product. The most significant correlation expresses the rate of advance of the sand as a function of the variables investigated. There are many practical ramifications of this phase of the investigation that should aid in better treatment design. Evaluation of sand advance rates provides a means of estimating sand placement efficiencies during a treatment and the resulting sand distribution in the fracture. The results show that sand placement efficiencies are low under typical treatment conditions. A brief description of the effects of overflushing is also included. INTRODUCTION The flow of sand-oil slurries in fractures is an area in which little basic knowledge is available. This stems to some degree from the fact that it is impossible to duplicate fractures at the surface. They occur in various shapes and sizes with an infinite combination of irregularities. Unfortunately, we can never "see" these fractures except in cores and by indirect means of measurement. In spite of this inherent difficulty, it is desirable to develop some basic concepts that will provide a better understanding of the sand transport mechanism. An insight into the problem is provided by investigations of fluid flow in rectangular conduits. Several studies on the flow of liquids in non-circular conduits1,13 show that a Reynolds number-Fanning friction factor relationship can be written if the hydraulic diameter is substituted for the regular diameter in a circular pipe. This hydraulic, or equivalent, diameter is taken as four times the cross-sectional area occupied by the flowing fluid divided by the wetted perimeter. Eq. 1 expresses an extension of this same work when applied to infinite parallel planes b distance apart.' Eq. 1 is a theoretical equation expressing the friction factor as a function of the Reynolds number for laminar single-phase fluid flow. This expression has been verified experimentally. The equivalent expression for a smooth circular conduit differs only in that the value of the constant is 16 instead of 24. Numerous studies have related friction losses to Reynolds number in both circular and non-circular conduits. These results are widely used and are not reviewed here. Huitt' investigated the effect of surface roughness on fluid flow in simulated fractures. He concluded that fluid flow in fractures may be treated similarly to fluid flow in circular conduits. This work, together with that of Nikuradse,' shows that surface roughness has no appreciative effect upon the resistance to flow in the viscous flow region. In the region of turbulent flow, surface roughness is a prominent factor. Hydraulic conveyance literature is another important source of information. Durand3 has attempted to organize systematically the variables involved in hydraulic-solid transport in pipes. He has classified the modes of flow into three types according to the size of the particles in the mixture— homogeneous mixtures, intermediary mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures. With the usual concentrations and flow rates used in hydraulic transportation, particles with diameters of less than 20 or 30 microns form eszentially homogeneous mixtures with water. The data show, however, that even small materials will tend to settle out under laminar flow conditions. Mixtures containing solids over 50 microns in diameter do not achieve total homogeneity even under turbulent flow conditions. Particles from 50 microns to 0.2 mm in diameter may be transported in fully suspended flow at normal transport velocities although the concentration in the vertical plane is not uniform. Above 2 mm in diameter solid materials are transported along the bottom of the conduit at a velocity substantially less than that of the liquid itself. Between 0.2 and 2 mm in diameter, the particles tend to be in a transition zone between heterogeneous suspended flow and deposit flow at normal hydraulic transport velocities. The sand sizes used in fracturing usually fall in this size range. The author calls attention to the increased mechanical cleaning of Utah coal between 1938, when no cleaning was being done, and 194.7, when more than 24 pct of the production was cleaned. The Pacific southwest increased 37 pct in population between 1940 and 191.7 while the United States showed only a 7 pct increase in the same period. it has been estimated that there will be an additional 15 pct increase in population between 1947 and 1950. The conclusion that more coal and more mechanicak cleaning capacity will be required appears to be well founded. Mr. Westerberg discusses the cco- nomic advantages of coal cleaning reflected in freight savings, in lower cost per million Btu, and lowered ash and sulphur content. In view of the limited occurrence of coking coals in the west it would be interesting to know whether significant beneficiation in coking strength can be expected from mechanical cleaning of Utah coals. Applications of rock mechanics to the design of engineering structures in rock involve the assumption that the stresses are due entirely to the present applied loads. For instance, it is assumed that the vertical normal stress in undisturbed rock free of topographic effects is equal to the weight per unit area of the overburden. In fact, vertical dilatational strains associated with stresses of more than 100 times the present overburden pressure have been measured by strain-relief methods on outcrops. 1,2 The notion of residual strain (stress) or latent stress3 seems unassailable; and indeed this has long been recognized by metallurgists. It is difficult, however, to assess the residual component of the in-situ state of elastic strain with conventional strain relief methods employed in mines or down boreholes. That is, in principle, the in-situ state results from the superposition of present applied loads (natural or man- induced) and potentially recoverable elastic strains (stresses) that exist in a given volume of material even though there are no external forces across the boundaries of the body (Voight,4 and Fig, 1). Accordingly, only in unloaded blocks can the true residual strains be measured by strain relief methods. Using X-rays, the elastic strains locked within the quartz grains or crystals of a rock can be measured. These strains are known to persist even when the rock is reduced to small chips but to vanish when the rock is disaggregated and the grains are powdered. Although we have just begun to investigate the mechanisms by which the strains are stored (see Preliminary Results), we believe that "pressure solution'' at grain boundaries, secondary cementation under load, permanent ("plastic") deformation, and temperature changes are possible processes. It becomes ever more important to civilization as the mineral wealth of the earth approaches exhaustion. I have therefore decided to consider a few of the more important problems arising in the training of the mining engineer, and especially those arising in America. , The Peculiar Nature of Mineral Wealth. Mining and Agriculture are the two fundamental arts. Without the latter our existence would be precarious; without the former, our civilization impossible. Agriculture furnishes that regular supply of food and raiment which leads to the growth of large communities in which cultivated leisure first becomes possible; while mining furnishes the metallic thread from which is woven that complex fabric we call civilization. But in these two arts the conditions for success are widely different. Most of the crops that the farmer reaps may be harvested year after year, and the proper fertilizers being added, he may continue the annual harvest indefinitely, while, as a result of cultivation, his farm becomes yearly more valuable. But the crop the miner reaps can be harvested but once in the history of the race. Our mineral wealth has taken unknown ages to mature in the bosom of the earth. The pH control system at Kennecott Copper Corporation's Nevada Mines Division concentrator consists of two independent systems, lime dilution and lime addition. Lime dilution is accomplished in a mixing tank where slaked lime and water are introduced proportionately. The desired dilution of the milk of lime is determined by the electrical inputs provided by eight pH probes, one per grinding section. The inputs are averaged and applied to a time base generator. The summation output of the time base generator determines the proportion of lime and water that are to be mixed and applies this input to a voltage sensitive switching device. The switching device provides a signal to one of two relays which will add either slaked lime or water, dependent upon the summation output. The entire cycle is based on a 2-min repetition rate to allow for sufficient mix time. Responsivity is controlled by maintaing a limited maximum solution level in the mix tank. Lime addition is controlled independently within each grinding section. The electrical input from the pH probe in a given section controls the solenoid valves which provide lime to each of the ball mills. The valves remain open within a time range capable of maintaining the pH of flotation feed at a given set point.

A mining project is, at one and the same time, capital intensive and highly risky. Besides, because of its usual long projected life, the operating cost is more difficult to predict and offtentimes exceed, during the life of the project, the first investment manifold. The objective of this study was to evaluate the applicability of cost-capacity relationships as used in the chemical industry to mining operations and, when necessary, to develop new ones. With the aid of a computer library program available at the Computation Center of the Pennsylvania State University, the total investment in mining equipment was determined to vary exponentially with production capacity, and the scaling exponents for each class of equipment, i.e., drills, shovels, trucks and earth moving equipment, as well as for the total operation were calculated. Since the scaling exponent for the whole mining operation happened to be equal to 0.94, it was concluded that more significant economies of scale are achievable in processing plants than in mining operations. From the operating cost point of view, unit material cost was found to decrease more rapidly than unit labor for the same increases in production capacity. The analysis of cost centers revealed that drilling and blasting, which are materials-intensive operational stages, were the most favorable in achieving significant economies of scale. Hauling unit cost, on the other hand, decreased only slightly when production capacity increased.

The self-diffusion coefficient of chromium in various alloys in the iron-chromium system has been measured. A variation in Dofrom 10-4 for pure chromium to a maximum of 102 near 60 pct Cr appears with a range of activation energy from about 50 to 80 kcal per mol. The general pattern of behavior observed is not consistent with present theories of diffusion by a vacancy mechanism. Suggestions are made for further clarifying experiments. RECENT work on the self-diffusion of chromium,' ?-uranium2-4 and ß-zirconium,23, 26 has indicated that these elements have very low Do (10-3 to 10-4) compared to that conventionally expected for vacancy diffusion. Pound et al.5 have suggested that this may be due to ring diffusion being operative, and have proposed a model which gives Do of the correct order of magnitude. The essential difference between this model and Zener's earlier model6 is that whereas Zener assumes tight coupling between atoms in a ring to establish a vibrational frequency, Pound's model allows the atoms to vibrate essen- tially each in their own normal modes. The probability of each atom moving in the correct direction to cause a ring of n atoms to rotate by 2p/n must then be calculated as a "synchronal entropy" which may be -20 e.u. for a 4 atom ring. In iron, the latest determinations of self-diffusion yield Do in the range 18 to 522.7-9 The most accurate is probably that of Borg and Birchenall8 which is 118 ± 3. This value is not inconsistent with that expected for a vacancy mechanism. Since iron and chromium are very closely similar in size, are both transition metals, and their solution is thermodynamically ideal at temperatures of interest in diffusion, it appeared that a determination of self-diffusion coefficients, Do and Q as a function of composition would be of substantial interest to diffusion theory. The following measurements were made with this purpose in mind.
