The wire textures for cold rolled and recrystallized iodide titanium and the sheet textures for this material produced by cold and hot rolling, and recrystallization at a series of temperatures were determined. &apos;The effect of the a + ß transformation on the sheet texture was noted. UNTIL recently it was believed that all hexagonal close-packed metals deformed by slip on the basal plane, (0001), and that rolling should tend to rotate this slip plane into the plane of the rolled sheet. The pole figures of cold rolled magnesium&apos; are satisfactorily explained on this basis. There is a tendency for the <1120> directions to align parallel to the rolling direction, and the principal scatter is in the rolling direction. Zinc% as a rolling texture in which the hexagonal axis is inclined 20" to 25" toward the rolling direction. Twinning is believed to account for the moving of the basal plane away from parallelism with the rolling plane. The texture of beryllium3 places the basal plane parallel to the rolling plane with the [1010] direction parallel to the rolling direction, and the scatter from this orientation is primarily in the transverse direction. Cold rolled textures reported for zirconium&apos; and titanium5 how the [1010] directions to lie parallel to the rolling direction and the (0001) plane tilted by approximately 25" to 30" to the rolling plane in the transverse direction. Rosi has recently reported that the mechanisms for deformation in titanium are distinctly different from those commonly reported for hexagonal close-packed metals. The principal slip plane is the prismatic plane, {1010), with some slip also occurring on the pyramidal planes, (1011). However, there is no evidence for basal slip. The slip direction is reported to be the close-packed digonal axis, [1120]. In addition to the twin plane commonly reported for metals of this class, {1012), Rosi found the twin planes (1122) and {1121), with the dominant twin plane being (1121). Information regarding the recrystallization and hot rolling textures of hexagonal close-packed metals is limited. Barrett and Smigelskas report that rolling beryllium at temperatures up to 800°C and recrystallization at 700°C produce textures not differing from the cold rolled sheet texture.3 McGeary and Lustman find that hot rolling at 850°C produces the same basic texture in zirconium as rolling at room temperature.&apos; These investigators also report that the texture for sheet zirconium recrystallized at 650 °C differs from the cold rolled orientation inasmuch as the [1120] direction, instead of the [1010] direction, is parallel to the rolling direction. In the case of titanium, it is not possible to deduce which direction is preferred in the recrystallized state from the pole figures presented by Clark." The purpose of this paper is to report an extensive investigation of the preferred orientations in iodide titanium. Since the deformation mechanisms for titanium are different from those commonly given for hexagonal close-packed metals, it is not surprising to find distinct differences between the textures of titanium and other metals of this class. Materials and Methods This investigation was carried out on iodide titanium obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co. with an analysis as follows: N2, 0.002 pct; Mn, 0.004; Fe, 0.0065; A1, 0.0065; Pb, 0.0025; Cu, 0.01; Sn, 0.002; and Ti, remainder. The crystallities of titanium were broken from the as-deposited bar and melted to form 20 g buttons on a water-cooled copper block in a vacuum arc-furnace. Hardness tests conducted on the material before and after melting differed by only two or three Vickers Pyramid Numbers, indicating no or insignificant contamination. The buttons were hot forged, ground, and etched to sizes and shapes suitable for the rolling schedule, and vacuum annealed at 1300°F. Specimens for determination of the wire textures were reduced 91 pct in diameter to 0.027 in. in 24 steps using grooved rolls. In order for the orientation of the central region to be studied, portions of these wires were electrolytically reduced to a diameter of 0.005 in. using the procedure described by Sutcliffe and Reynolds.&apos; The sheet textures were determined on titanium cold rolled 97 pct to a thickness of 0.005 in. A reduction of approximately 10 pct per pass was used, and the rolling direction was changed 180" after each pass. Specimens used for determination of the recrystallized textures were annealed in evacuated quartz tubes at 1000°, 1300°, and 1500°F. The grain size of the 1000°F specimen was sufficiently small to give satisfactory X-ray patterns with the specimen stationary. However, it was necessary to scan the surface of the other recrystallized specimens. The microstructure of each annealed specimen was that of a recrystallized material. The diffraction rings all showed the break-up into spots typical of recrystallized structures.

The lack of Aryan roots for the names of metals commonly known among the Aryan settlers of Asia Minor, as well as the later colonizers of Europe, indicates that these races were generally ignorant of the use of metals until they came into contact with Semitic peoples. Practically all mining-terms in current use among the earliest Greeks resemble very strongly their distinctly Semitic equivalents, which can be traced all the way in a broad belt beginning in Lower Mesopotamia, and extending westwardly to the Syrian shores of the Mediterranean. The Greek word &apos;metallon," for instance, used indiscriminately to designate mine or ore, probably came from the earlier Semitic equivalent, " matal." Again, the Greek words " chry-sos " (gold) and " chalkos " (copper) seem to be descended from the Semitic forms " chrouts " and " chalak." It is a natural inference that primitive mining-methods were evolved by the dwellers in the mineralized areas of Asia Minor, from whom later Greek, Roman, and even North European miners obtained their first not.ions of the reduction of metallic ores, by

The distribution coefficient, k, of interest in zone refining is generally defined as the ratio of the solid to the liquid solubilities of one element in another at the normal melting point of the solvent. In practice, distribution coefficients are frequently calculated from solubilities at temperatures well below the melting point of the solvent, e.g., at a eutectic temperature. This is done because of the general lack of accurate data on the liquidus and solidus curves in most phase diagrams. The practice is equivalent to assuming that the liquidus and solidus curves are straight lines in the temperature range between the melting point of the solvent and the temperature at which data for the solubilities are known. It is recognized that the k values so derived may be in serious error; we have found evidence in recent zone-refining operations that a case in point is silicon in aluminum. The phase diagram found in the literature for silicon in aluminum indicates a eutectic on the aluminum-rich side at 12.5 at. pct Si and at 577°C,1 and a solid solubility of silicon in aluminum at this temperature of 1.59 pct.2 It also shows the liquidus and solidus as nearly straight lines from 577°C to the melting point of aluminum (660°C)1,2 The k value obtained from this data is 0.13. This is almost exactly the same as the k value (about 0.14)&apos; obtained in a similar way for copper in aluminum. Yet we have found by mass-spectrograph analyses* of three bars of zone-refined aluminum that copper is efficiently removed from aluminum by zone refining but silicon is not. Two of the three bars of aluminum were zone-refined in our laboratories, the other in the laboratories of AIAG Metals, Inc. The former two bars, designated bars PG2 and PG3, were 30 in. long by 1 in. in diameter during refining; each was processed in a high-purity graphite boat* and kept under refining stage of the process consisted of thirty unidirectional zone traverses at rates of about 1 to 2 in. per hr, with a zone length of 1 to 2 in. At approximately the middle of the refining period a 6-in. piece of the impurity-laden finishing end of the bar* was cut off and replaced with new start- ing material. Following refining, the purest 20-in. section of the bar (obtained by discarding approximately 2 in. of the starting end and 8 in. of the finishing end of the bar) was leveled and then analyzed. The AIAG bar was 16 in. long and about 1.2 in. in diameter; it was purified by eight passes of a 2-in. zone at a rate of 1.6 in. per hr, the bar being contained in a sintered alumina boat lined with loose alumina powder of the highest purity. Data for the silicon and copper contents of the three refined bars are given in Table I. Derived data for the efficiencies of the zone-refining operations are listed in Table 11. It is clear from these two tables that the copper is removed much more efficiently—by a factor of 10 to 50 times—from aluminum during zone refining than is silicon. For example, in bar PG3 the thirty zone passes reduced the copper content from 10 to 0.02 ppm, i.e., by 500 times, whereas the same treatment lowered the silicon content by only a factor of about 16. It seem virtually certain, therefore, that the distribution co efficient, k, for silicon in aluminum is well above that for copper and is very likely not much below unity. This also implies that the solidus line on the aluminum-rich side of the A1-Si phase diagram is very probably appreciably curved near the aluminum melting point since the phase-diagram data indicate such curvature is unlikely in the liquidus.

The photograph, Fig. 1, shows the apparatus a little less than half size, consisting of a filtering-flask fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a bent glass tube, and an extraction-thimble fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a glass tube of 0.25-inch bore. Both tubes are connected by a short piece of rubber tubing. A section of a thimble is shown in the photograph ; the tube extends to within & in. of the tapered end. The object of using the thimble is to remove the acid from the beaker after all the copper has been precipitated. Time is saved, the copper is not exposed to the acid alone, and there are none of the losses attending ordinary filtration. I have accomplished these results by means of a piece of perforated platinum fastened in the end of a (0.25-in. bore glass tube and a filter-mat of asbestos, but after my supply of proper length fiber became exhausted I could not replenish it even after purchasing 14 lots from four different dealers. The above apparatus may be used to remove at least seven-eighths of a supernatant liquid from a settled precipitate without disturbing the latter. The application of the thimble is best shown by partly outlining the assay for copper, as follows: Dilute the acid solution of copper and other sulphates to 150 cc. in a 200-cc. Jena beaker, place on a hot plate, add 2 drops of concentrated HCl, then place a strip of aluminum in the beaker (this may be bent or straight, as desired). Connect the apparatus, as shown in Pig. 1, with a filter-pump having a strong suction. When the copper is precipitated, remove the beaker from the hot plate and insert the extraction-thimble alongside the strip of aluminum. The acid solution will be drawn through the porous tube. Knowledge of the theory underlying the behavior of mixtures of fluids in reservoir rocks is essential to the proper solution of certain types of problems in petroleum production, but is as yet incompletely developed. The object of this paper is to show the application of well established thermody-namic and physical principles to these problems, and thus to assist in the development of the basic theory. For convenience the problems to be considered here may be divided into two groups: 1. Static problems, involving only the static balance between capillary forces and those due to the difference in densities of the fluids; i.e., gravitational forces. 2. Dynamic problems, involving analysis of the motion oi mixtures of immiscible fluids in porous media under the influence of forces due to gravity, capillarity, and an impressed external pressure differential. Capillary Equilbrium in Sands Under this heading the static type of problem will be discussed and the results of experimental investigations on the capillary properties of unconsolidated sands will be presented. Although the discussion of this section is, in a sense, prefatory to the treatment of problems of mixture flow, the concepts developed here have considerable intrinsic importance apart from their ap-plication to flow problems. For, it is reason-able to postulate that the reservoir fluids are, owing to their long existence in undis- turbed mutual contact prior to exploitation, in substantial equilibrium. It follows that their distribution in the reservoir at the time of tapping should be entirely predictable from the theory of capillary equi librium, provided certain experimentally measurable properties of the reservoir rock are known. Knowledge of the distribution of the several fluids in the reservoir is, ol course, helpful in the estimation of reserves and in other problems. It is to be emphasized that throughout the discussion of capillary statics it is assumed that the fluids are in equilibrium from the capillary standpoint. Thus, water, where it is referred to as being in a reservoir, will be understood to be interstitial water, present at the time of drilling the reservoir, commonly termed "connate" water. The theory developed here is perfectly general for any porous solid, whether a carefully prepared unconsolidated sand or a natural sandstone from an oil reservoir. At present, however, only problems involving clean, unconsolidated sands can be made to yield numerical solutions, since only such sands have been adequately investigated experimentally. Experimental evaluation of the pertinent properties 01 natural reservoir rocks will permit the extension of the numerical treatment to problems involving these materials. We shall now consider in some detail the static equilibrium of fluid mixtures in porous solids: that is, the manner in which the reservoir fluids are distributed vertically whell the Forces due to capillarity are just balanccd by those due to gravitation.

In a paper read at the Lake Superior meeting, August, 1580, an account was given of the successful use of Rendrock. and Monaky powder upon a .scaffold- and salamander in the furnace. On April 5th, 1881,&apos; the same trouble called for like treatment, which, though not so immediately successful, was on the whole more instructive than the first trial, and points, I trust, to a reasonably sure remedy for all such difficulties. Up to December 4th, 1880, foundry and mill iron were made from Old Bed and Sew Bed magnetite, and Kearney red hematite, when a return was made to Bessemer iron, from an inferior quality of New Bed ore as compared with that used during first blast. January lath, 1881, New Bed, Chateangay, and East-shaft, a newly-opened Bessemer deposit of Messrs. Witherbee, Sherman $ Co., were first used, and continued up to February 13th, on a fuel charge of 80 per cent. anthracite and 20 per cent. coke, the product on the three ores being about 10 tons more per day than on New Bed alone. From this time until March 11th all coal was used, and New Bed, Chateaugay, and East-shaft ores, up to February 224 and from that date Chateaugay and New Bed, the product falling off 9,8, tons per day as a result of not using coke. It is fair, however, to state that the furnace was not in good condition during this period, being over-burdened, and the New Bed ore was, temporarily, uncommonly poor, for reasons of no particular interest here. STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer- consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority&apos;s research program has led to quasicommercial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee&apos;s phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in-lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

EXAMINATION by the differential thermal analysis technique of a large number of samples of soil and other clays from various parts of the world has demonstrated that the occurrence of cold-precipitated hydrated ferric oxide (the identification of which in soil clays has previously been reported5) is not confined to any limited locality; e.g., it has been found in varying amounts in clays from Britain, France, South Africa, and Mexico. The conditions necessary for its formation have not yet been elucidated in spite of the number of samples examined, and, since this mineral is so easily prepared in the laboratory, it has been considered that a study of its constitu¬tion and of the conditions under which it could be prepared might. lead to a better understanding of the factors involved. These experiments form the subject of this short paper, and while they do not supply a definite answer to the mode of formation of this mineral in nature, they may, it is hoped, add something to our knowledge in this direction. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Materials Employed The a-Fe2O3.H2O (goethite) and B-Fe2O3.H2O (Weiser and Milligan") were obtained from the Department of Geology, University of Aberdeen, and Rothamsted Experimental Station, respectively. The beta material had been prepared by the method described by Fernelius.1 y-Fe2O3.H2O (lepidocrocite) was prepared at the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research by the method of van Schuylenborgh.6 The method employed for preparation of the cold-precipitated hydrated ferric oxide* was as follows: 1: 1 NH4OH was added (moderately fast with rapid stirring) to a solution of 5 grams FeC13.6H2O in 250 ml distilled water at room temperature (ca. 15°C) until red litmus turned blue, and then 2 to 3 drops in excess. The resultant precipitate was filtered off on a Buchner funnel and washed free from Cl- with distilled water. Previous experiments having shown that drying over P2O5 at room temperature or drying at 105°C in the oven did not significantly affect the thermogram,5 samples were nor-

Two distinct types of depth-dependent variations in texture have been observed in niobium cold-rolled various amounts up to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness. These nonuniformities are thought to be the results of nonhomogeneous plastic dewmation during rolling. The first type is characterized by a zone at intermediate depths that tends to lack certain strong orientations which are present in the surface and center layers of the rolled stock. This type of texture modification seemed to be associuted with "high" body rolling and may be related to the shape of the zone of deformation in rolling. The second type of texture inhomogeneity found involved the formation of a unique texture in the surface layers of heavily rolled strip. High fiiction forces between work piece and rolls appear to be needed to generate and maintain this texture. We believe that this unique surface texture results from a shear mode of deformation in the surface layers. THE evolution of texture in both the surface and center regions of cold-rolled niobium as a function of increasing deformation from 43 to 99.5 pct reduction in thickness was reported in a previous paper.&apos; It was noted that for strips rolled between 95 and 98 pct reduction a distinctly different texture appeared in the surface layers which was unlike the center texture. Certain other layer to layer textural variations were also detected during the experimental phase of that work but were not described in the paper. Surface textures have been reported previously for the bcc materials iron and Steel2-4 and are well known in the fcc metals.5 It is usually stated that these are shear textures which arise under conditions of high friction between specimen and rolls. Work by Mayer-Rosa and Haessner5 n niobium rolled under conditions presumed to be high roll friction gave no indication, however, of a surface texture in that material. This is indeed puzzling in view of our results.&apos; Thus we undertook additional experiments designed to study the stability of the surface texture for certain rolling variables. The variables investigated were the presence or absence of lubrication, amount of reduction per pass, and reverse vs unidirectional rolling. It is the purpose of the present paper to describe the kinds of depth-dependent textural inhomogeneities that we have observed in rolled niobium as well as to present the results of our recent experiments on the stability of the surface texture. Possible explanations for the depth-dependent texture variations will be discussed in terms of nonhomogeneous plastic deformation during rolling. EXPERIMENTAL Specimens cut from the niobium rolled to different reductions in the previous study1 were examined at various layer levels throughout the strip thickness for textural inhomogeneity. The specimen surfaces were either etched or machine ground and etched to remove material to a specific depth. Textures were determined by means of the Schulz X-ray reflection pole figure method with a Siemens texture goniometer and Cum X radiation. Since the important intensity peaks of the textures in niobium are usually located on the normal direction (N.D.) to rolling direction (R.D.) radius of the (110) pole figures, it was sufficient in many cases to scan only along this radius. At selected depths or where additional information was required the entire (110) pole figure was also obtained. In studying the stability and formation of the surface texture, experiments were conducted on 0.400-in.-thick, fine-grained, randomly oriented niobium specimens extracted from the same starting stock as that used in the earlier study.&apos; Two of these specimens were rolled at room temperature to a total reduction of 96.4 pct. One was rolled between cleaned and degreased rolls with no lubrication. The other was lubricated between passes with Welch Duo Seal vacuum pump oil. The rolling schedules of each were kept as nearly identical as possible. Drafts were of the order of 0.006 to 0.012 in. per pass. Other experiments consisted of rolling specimens at constant fractional reduction per pass, i.e., (ta- tb)/ta equals a constant where ta and tb are the entrance and exit thickness of the rolled stock, rather than at a constant draft, i.e., ta- tb equals a constant. Ten specimens were rolled at room temperature on a two-high, motor-driven rolling mill with 8-in.-diam rolls. These specimens were rolled to thicknesses of between 0.041 and 0.073 in. (82 to 90 pct total reduction) at approximately constant reductions per pass ranging from 9 to 45 pct. Kerosene was used as a lubricant. Half of the specimens were always rolled in the same direction while the other half were reversed end to end at each pass. The texture in the surface regions was determined with the X-ray technique described above. RESULTS The textural inhomogeneities noted in niobium rolled from fine-grained, randomly oriented stock 1.5 in. long by 0.75 in. wide by 0.40 in. thick can be classified into two types. The first may be discussed with the aid of Figs. 1 to 3. THESE ores occur in the Laurentian rocks in the town of Clifton, St. Lawrence County, New York. The Clifton Mining Company have opened these magnetites upon their estate of 23,000 acres, on the waters of the Grasse River, an affluent of the St. Lawrence, which flows for about nine miles across the estate, exposing a section of the formation, and affording ample water-power at numerous points. In approaching this district from De Kalb Junction, upon the Watertown and Ogdensburg Railway, the observer passes from the zone of the specular ores, which abound to a great extent in Jefferson County, across a belt of non-metal-liferous limestones, continuing for some miles intermingled with metamorphic rocks, and gradually giving place to heavy beds of granitic and porphyritic gneiss, the weathered surfaces of which present a gray and rough appearance, from the washing out of the feldspar; leaving the quartz very prominent, and completely disguising the real character of the rock, which, when freshly broken, has a lively reddish appearance from the predominance of flesh-colored and red feldspar. Beds of fine-grained quartzite appear also intercalated in the granitic gneiss. These are the dominating rocks of the magnetite region, but the magnetite is always found, so far as the speaker&apos;s observation extended, associated with beds of calcite, carrying hornblende, black and green, biotite, and brown garnet interspersed with yellow and magnetic pyrites. The strike of these rocks is about northeast, and their dip about 40° to 45° southeast.

(written discussion *).-The writer would first call attention to the fact that the mid-Continent field was credited from 1900 to 1915 with a production of about 641,000,000 bbl. of oil with-out any burdensome water troubles being reported. In fact, the authors say the conditions were not acute until about two years ago when the unusual conditions in the deeper oil fields were first encountered. The writer disclaims any personal knowledge of the district mentioned but, from the experience he has gained in directing drilling in various fields by both the cable-tool and the rotary methods and also in plugging and cementing wells, he fails to see how the analysis of water trouble given in the paper under discussion could be of any practical assistance in solving the problems so vaguely outlined. Possibly it might induce academic discussion, if not limited to practical operating conditions. A recent bulletin of the Bureau of Mines gives definite and practical statements that can be easily understood by one skilled in the art of drilling wells and heading off water troubles. From an operating standpoint subsurface knowledge must be based on logs of completed wells. Absolutely no one can have such knowledge as that indicated in Fig. 1 of the paper in question without drilling wells, and no one can question such facts when disclosed by the drill. Under classification of water the paper states "This water (primary) cannot be exhausted from the sands, but its encroachment can often be checked and so directed that wells need not be abandoned, until most of the available oil is secured." This is a live question to the writer. A couple of years ago he had some wells drilled and found the conditions comparable with sands A and D of Fig. 1 with B and C left out; but nothing in the paper, so far as can be found, indicates how this water encroachment is or can be checked or directed particularly under the High heads named.

THE prices of crude petroleum and its derivatives have shown an upward trend from 1915 to 1920, and a downward trend from 1920 to 1923, see Table 1. Over the former period, oil prices were dominated by the rapidly increasing demands and inflation incident to the war and its aftermath, while over the latter period oil prices were influenced at the outset by deflation and then by the conditions of overproduction that have characterized the past three years. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the broader features of the more recent price movements in the petroleum industry and to relate these features to basic economic conditions in the industry.

A scrubber of new design has been invented for the beneficiation of glass and chemical sands. The machine is described and its capacity and metallurgical efficiency compared with the performance of other sand cleaning devices. THREE years ago, when the Process Research Laboratory at Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. sought a remedy for the increasing cost of disposing of great quantities of spent sands from foundries, R. C. Edwards developed a continuous inclined paddle scrubber which removed a substantial amount of the charred coatings from the grains with a surprisingly small amount of degradation of the sand itself.&apos; The satisfactory results obtained on foundry sand, using this piece of equipment in conjunction with classification, suggested that a similar procedure could probably be applied to the cleaning of other sands, such as those required by the glass and chemical industries. This paper describes the flowsheet and the results of tests performed on impure natural sands. The four materials tested were silica sands obtained from widely separated geographical areas. Three of the sands tested contained various amounts of iron oxide and the fourth an excessive amount of calcareous bonding material. The iron oxide was present predominantly in the form of grain coatings, which were scuffed by the paddle scrubber, and in all cases a product was manufactured which would meet one of the sets of specifications imposed by the glass industry.&apos; The Edwards paddle scrubber used in these tests consists of a rubber-lined steel cylinder 18 in. in diam and 48 in. long, mounted on a frame so that its slope can be varied 5" to 35" from horizontal. This variable slope permits controlled flow of material through the machine. Rubber paddles rotate inside the cylinder and are secured to a center shaft 2 in. square, which extends through the entire length and is turned at both ends so that it can be supported by sleeve bearings centrally fixed in the end plates of the shell. At the upper or feed end it extends through the bearing on the end plate into a sheave, to which the motor drive is connected by means of Texrope transmission. The four sets of paddles mounted on the shaft, two in each set, are made of rubber belting, 1/4 in. thick, 9 in. wide, and 16 in. long. The two paddles in each set are secured on opposite sides of the square shaft, but in the same longitudinal position along the shaft axis. In other words, the two paddles in the set operate 180" apart. Each successive set is mounted 90" from the preceding one. One end of each paddle is bolted to the square shaft and the other weighted by a steel bar, lx1 1hx9 in. long, which is attached about Yz in. from the outer tip of the paddle. By centrifugal force at proper shaft speed, these weights force the paddle surface to rub smoothly against the rubber lining of the cylinder. During operation, the sand forces its way between the paddle face and the surface of the cylinder, providing the necessary abrading action as the pulp flows by gravity down the length of the cylinder. The electric smelting of manganese ore and the production of ferro-manganese did not exist as an industry, in the United States or elsewhere, previous to the outbreak of war in 1914. Ferromanganese had been produced, electrically, during times of high prices by two companies at Niagara Falls and by several European companies, but the production was spasmodic, and none was electrically produced when ferromanganese sold at from $35 to $40 per ton. Thus the electric smelting of manganese ore must be considered as a development caused by the high prices prevailing during the years 1916, 1917 and 1918, and the necessity of smelting domestic ore in order to fill the ferromanganese requirements of the steel industry of the United States, which increased from 189,088 tons in 1914 to 356,356 tons in 1918. The electric furnace is well adapted to smelting domestic ore because it can be located in small units near the source of ore supply. In 1918, the ferromanganese production of the United States was 333,027 tons, of which about 7 per cent., or 23,000 tons, was produced in the electric furnace. The electric furnace not only assisted materially in the development of a domestic-ore supply but made a considerable saving of coke, as it requires about 11/4 tons of bituminous or lignite coal per ton of ferromanganese compared with a blast-furnace consumption of 2.9 tons of coke per ton of ferromanganese. Some of the plants in the United States that smelted manganese orc in the electric furnace during the war and in 1920 are listed in Table 1. From early in 1919 to about February, 1920, little ferromanganese was produced in the electric furnace. During this period the price of ferromanganese (78 to 82 per cent. manganese) was about $100 per ton. During the first half of 1920, several plants resumed operation when the price of ferromanganese (76 to 80 per cent. grade) gradually increased to $200 per ton, delivered.
