This paper is intended only to give a preliminary account of experiments made, and conclusions reached, concerning the treatment of certain refractory low-grade gold-ores, the profitable reduction of which may furnish a useful guide to the solution of similar mining and metallurgical problems, not only in the gold-bearing belt of the Southern United States, but perhaps in other regions also. It must be regarded as simply a " report of progress," preceding a more elaborate and conclusive report of regular practice. The mines of the Hillabee Gold Mining Co. are located upon what is generally known locally as Hog Mountain, on the northern edge of Tallapoosa county, Ala., about 15 miles from Goodwater and 14 miles from Alexander City, stations on the Central of Georgia railway. Gold has been known since 1839 to exist on this property, where it was discovered in that year by a man named Johnston. The property was worked for placer-gold by the old miners, and there are now the remains of four attempts to operate it by stamp-mill and plate-amalgamation. The present owners purchasid it in 1896, and since that time they have experimented at frequent intervals, in order to devise a process that would satisfactorily recover the gold. In 1903 regular operations were begun. Geologically, the mountain consists of an intrusion of what has been pronounced true granite in altered sedimentary slates. The cooling of the granite produced shrinkage-cracks, which have become veins. There is considerable question as to the period of the slate formation; but it is undoubtedly, in my opinion, of Carboniferous age. Up to 1909 the American public had little knowledge of, or interest in, potash. Some remembered that it had to do with soft soap and sore throat, but further they knew not. In 1909-10, the German-American potash war, and the publicity attending hostilities, brought home to America the knowledge that potash was an important article of commerce; that Germany monopolized its production and distribution, and exercised all the prerogatives attending complete control. The present war, with its transportation embargo, has again directed attention to Germany's strength as a potash producer and her present unfortunate situation as a distributor. As a consequence, the search for potash takes on new life and it again becomes a subject of general interest. My first knowledge of potash came from a study of the German potash exhibit at the World's Fair in 1893. This investigation led to the recommendation that Armour & Co. engage in the manufacture of commercial fertilizers and the fertilizer branch was organized early in 1894. From then to now "potash" has been a live subject. Two and eight-tenths per cent. of the earth's crust consists of potassium oxide. It is an important constituent of feldspar, granite, and other igneous rocks. Potash is valuable commercially in a water-soluble form. In igneous rocks it is locked in so tight that it is of little value and no utilization in a commercial way has been made of these insoluble forms. Potash in water-soluble form is found in large deposits in Germany; in smaller deposits in Austria and Spain; and in brines in some of our Western arid basins. The deposits in Germany, Austria, and Spain are concentrations from sea waters containing potash derived from the decomposition of potash-bearing rocks.

IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

SINCE the equation of continuity governing transient flow of gases through porous media cannot be integrated mathematically into a simple usable expression free from series terms, empirical and approximate equations have been advanced relating cumulative production and future production rates from gas reservoirs with time. In order to check the accuracy of these empirical equations and to obtain an insight into the initial conditions pertinent to the solution of the fundamental equation of continuity, experimental work has been conducted on a vertical 2-in. tube, 91.6 ft. high, packed with unconsolidated Wilcox sand. The results presented in graphical form show the accuracy of the approximate relations. Data from unsteady-flow runs on the 2-in. experimental tube are presented graphically, and are applied to obtain an equation for this specific case, and are offered as an aid in future investigations of this basic equation. The close agreement between equations calculated for steady-state flow and the experiments indicates that the decline of actual gas reservoirs may be treated by an application of these equations without serious error.

IN recent years the Homestake mine has been served by three shafts, the B. &. M., the B. & M. No; 2 and the Ellison, supplemented by an inside shaft, the Milliken, extending from the 2000-ft. level to the 3200-ft. level. In 1932, when a new operating shaft was under consideration, the bottom of the mine was at the 3200-ft. level. The B: & M. and the B. & M. No. 2 shafts were down to the 1550-ft. level and the Ellison was being deepened from the 2600 to the 3200-ft. level. All ore was hoisted at the B. & M. and-Ellison shafts. Levels below the 2600 level, which were under development only, were served by the Milliken shaft. Below the 1550-ft. level, the mine was served only by the Ellison shaft from the surface. Within a few years, when ore reserves above the 1550-ft. level would be depleted, operation would be limited to the Ellison shaft and the auxiliary underground shaft. The Ellison shaft alone was not adequate for hoisting the entire output from the deeper levels and also handling all men and supplies. Further-more, assurance of safety and uninterrupted operation required- two fully equipped shafts to the deeper levels. Therefore a new operating shaft was authorized in November, 1932, and was named for A. J. M. Ross, the mine superintendent.

A study of the ground area surrounding the Getchell, Nev., gold mine mill tailings was conducted so that a better understanding of the effects of arsenic toxicity on Upper Sonoran vegetation could be obtained. The Getchell area was selected because of the known high values of arsenic currently contained in the tailings waste (1% or higher). Mill wastes as well as the scrubber product As2O3 are contained in the tailings pond. In order to determine the effect of the tailings disposal on the surrounding vegetation, plots and line-transect techniques were employed to obtain plant ecological information on the area surrounding the ponds, and also non-affected control plots. Data for percent ground cover, species frequency, and plant vitality as a function of distance from the tailings ponds were collected. THERE are two general approaches to the problem of increasing profits from an operation. One is to lower expense; the other is to raise income. Mechanical preparation of coal may be used for either purpose but a prudent consideration of many details must precede any decision lest the results be negative instead of positive. It is quite possible that any net gain will result from a combination of the two. Since mechanically prepared coal invariably is a better product qualitatively than a hand-picked coal from the same mine, it is a reason¬able expectation that the customer will be willing to increase the pro¬ducer's income by paying a higher price. Or there may be the possibility that a combination of mechanical mining plus mechanical cleaning will give a lower over-all production cost for the coal in the railroad car. More likely, there will be found a combination of these two factors. From the customer's point of view, the competitive delivered cost per B.t.u. considered in relation to such incidental factors as dust nuisance, handling properties, ash disposal, and ash fusibility determines what he will pay. In a bulk tonnage product such as coal, freight is a very considerable part of the delivered fuel cost, and obviously freight paid on incombustible ash has no economic attractions.

The Cornucopia district is situated in northeastern Oregon 25 miles from the Snake River branch of the Oregon Short Line R.R. and 75 miles northeast of Baker City, in the Wallowa Mountains. The formation is principally granodiorite, which has intruded much older rocks locally known as greenstone, and which are probably altered schists. In the upper horizons of the veins, greenstone is found as inclusions in the granitic mass. Both of these formations have been cut by numerous basalt, aplite, and porphyry dikes. Veins of the district are the result of faulting and the consequent crushing of the wall rock. The ore has been deposited irregularly along these faults and formed a lenticular type of vein. The ore varies in width from a few inches to 20 ft.; the average stoping width is about 5 ft. As the basaltic dikes are subsequent to the ore deposition, they are at times a hindrance in development and mining operations; on the other hand, a dike which has followed a vein as a line of least resistance often serves as a good mall in place of the crushed, rather loose granite. The veins generally strike northeast-southwest and dip about 35" to the west. Orebodies are from 100 to 300 ft. in length and about the same in height. The lenses are irregular; inclusions of wall rock are common in the ore and are a factor in reducing the grade. The ores are quartz, carrying some free gold near the surface, but the metals for the most part are in iron sulfides, sometimes associated with chalcopyrite. The gold and silver are in a mechanical combination with the iron, which requires find grinding to liberate them. The ratio of silver to gold is 5 to 1, by weight. Development The Cornucopia Mines Co. owns, and operated until 1920, two mines and two mills of 100 tons capacity each. The sustained high costs and labor shortage, however, necessitated the abandoning of the Union mine, the oldest in the district. Two crosscut tunnels were then started, first, to cut the Last Chance vein at a much lower horizon and, second, to prospect two parallel veins. The ore from the Last Chance vein will go to the old Union mill and the ore from the new veins to the Last Chance mill.

THE two chemical compounds, natural sodium carbonate and sodium sulphate, in their anhydrous condition are dealt in as "soda ash and "salt cake”-names from an earlier day that are not as precise as the present accepted terminology. Once a large part of the sodium carbonate recovered was in the ash of seaweed, so it was logically called soda ash, and the corresponding potassium carbonate, once mainly recovered from wood ashes, was called potash. The term "salt cake" was applied to the sodium sulphate resulting from interaction of sodium chloride with sulphuric acid or sodium bisulphate, to form hydrogen chloride gas and an anhydrous cake of sodium sulphate. It was called "salt cake" and also "glassmaker's salt cake" because much of it was used in the production of glass. The two salts occur in nature in a variety of forms, but whereas an- hydrous sodium sulphate (thenardite) is fairly common, the anhydrous normal sodium carbonate, Na2CO3, is almost never found in nature. The monohydrate (thermonatrite), Na2CO3.2H2O, is seen occasionally, but it is never a major constituent in natural "soda" deposits. The high solubility of normal sodium carbonate is one reason for this. While both compounds occur widely in brines, the solid salts found in nature are usually trona (Na2CO3.NaHC03.2H2O) and thenardite (Na2SO4). The natural brines containing workable quantities of the two sodium salts are largely found in the arid and semiarid portions of the western United States and other countries. The classical discussion of the resources of these brines are those of Clarke,5 Chatard.4 Packard,19 Gale,11 and Wells.28 From North Dakota to California and from Arizona to the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, saline lakes, dried-up lakes, playas, and similar land-locked depressions contain accumulations of saline matter. Peru is divided into three regions—the coast, the ~ierra, or high mountainous region, and the " montaiia," or forest region of the Amazon basin. The Coast.—The coast is an arid region. No rain falls excepting in the extreme northern part, which borders the Gulf of Guayaquil. There is, however, a slight precipitation in the form of mist (gcirua), which occurs on the coast hills during the so-called winter months. The aridity of the coast is due principally to the antarctic, or Humboldt, ocean-current, which, being cold and having a temperature lower than that of the land, absorbs rather than produces vapors. The coast mists occur during the season when the land is relatively cold. N ear the Gulf of Guayaquil the antarctic current diverges from the coast, so that in the Tumbes valley and adjacent country the conditions in the summer months are such as prodnce rains. In the remaining valleys of the coast, agriculture is made possible only by means of irrigation, and is accordingly very limited in extent, although rich and varied. In the northern and south-central portions of the coast, plains extend inland from the sea, while in the southern part there is a coastal plain separated from the Pacific by a range of coast hills. Between the northern and south-central plains, as well as between the south-central and southern, the foothills of the sierra descend to the seacoast. The Sierra.—The sierra embraces the high land dominated by the lofty cordilleras of the Andes. In the southern part of Peru there are two cordilleras, the western and the eastern, which enter from Chile and Bolivia respectively, and inclose between them the Titicaca Lake basin. To the north of Lake Titicaca these cordilleras unite in the knot of Vilcanota, south of Cuzco. THIS paper describes the milling practice and operating results of the recently installed heavy-media separation plant of Barton Mines Corporation, the world's largest producer of garnet. This pioneer application of heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes for the beneficiation of a nonmetallic ore is unique in many respects, the details of which will be apparent from the following presentation. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ORE The property is on Gore Mountain, 5 miles west of the village of North Creek, New York, and 11 miles by road. The altitude of the mine is approximately 2800 feet. The valuable mineral, garnet, occurs in a surface deposit, the ore body being about ¾ mile long and varying in width from 50 to 300 ft. The garnet, principally almandite, Fe3A12 (Si04)3, occurs in a metamorphic rock of uncertain origin. The gangue mineral is principally hornblende, which constitutes from 40 to 80 per cent of the rock. The remainder of the gangue is divided between plagioclase feldspars and hypersthene, with smaller amounts of biotite, apatite and pyrite. The garnet content of the ore body varies from 5 to 20 per cent of the mass and averages about 10 to 12 per cent. The garnet occurs as crystals, mostly imperfectly developed, known locally as "pockets." These crystals vary in size from a fraction of an inch to a foot or more in diameter. Occasionally crystals have been found up to 30 and 36 in. in diameter but they average 4 to 6 inches. Nearly every crystal of garnet is surrounded by a rim of coarsely crystalline hornblende. The quarry faces are striking in appearance, showing crimson-red garnet crystals with their coal black rims scattered over a grayish black background. The specific gravity of the garnet is 3.8 to 4.1 while that of the hornblende ordinarily is 3.07 to 3.24. Some specimens of very dense hornblende have been found with a specific gravity as high as 3.40. The garnet crystals are laminated in structure, and readily cleave into flat, tabular pieces with sharp, chisel-like edges. Even when crushed to a very fine size, the garnet retains this flat, sharp, slivery grain shape. This characteristic, together with its hardness and toughness, gives it its value as an abrasive. FORMER OPERATIONS Mining operations have been carried on for 60 years. Until 1023, only the oxidized (soft rock) section of the ore body was mined. The oxidation, which affected the garnet only slightly, made possible the removal of the garnet from the rock by hand after it was blasted down, using small hand picks. The quenching technique has been used for- a study of phase velntiorzs within the composition triangle 2CaO.Fe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3 Fe2O3 of the system Ca-Fe-O. Desired total compositions of sanzples were attained by weighing of starting materials in required proportions and keeping them in sealed 80 pct Pt 20 pct Rh tubes during equilibration .runs. The liquidus surface has been delineated. the existence of two ternary compounds has been established, and seven ternary inwariant situations have been determined. ONE unit within the research program on refractory oxides in progress in our laboratories is the study of phase relations in the system Ca-Fe-Si-O. The present paper deals with the ternary system 2CaOFe2O3-FeO.Fe2O3-Fe2O3, which is only a small part of the enormously complex quaternary system. Many of the phases occurring in iron ore sinter products have compositions which can be closely approximated within this ternary system, and a knowledge of stability relations existing among these phases may be expected to be a useful guide for improving sintering operations. Two fundamentally different experimental approach es are commonly used in studies of systems containing iron oxides, both permitting control of the oxidation state of Fe. One method consists in keeping constant the oxygen partial pressure of the gas phase in equilibrium with condensed phases (liquid and crystalline). In the other method, which is the one used in the present investigation, the total composition of condensed phases is kept essentially constant by keeping the samples in a gas-tight container. The details of this experimental procedure will be described in a later section. PREVIOUS WORK Extensive studies of phase relations in the bounding binary system FeOFe2O3-Fe2O3 have been reported by Greig, Posnjak, Merwin, and Sosman,' by Darken and Gurry,2, 3 and recently by Phillips and Muan.4 A diagram summarizing the results of these studies is shown in Fig. 1. The withdrawal of gas and/or oil in appreciable quantity from a natural oil reservoir causes the pressure within the reservoir to diminish, and if the oil is completely saturated with gas, this dissolved gas begins to evolve from solution. The liberation of gas from solution in oil causes the oil to change in several ways, the principal changes being: (1) reduction in volume or "shrinkage"; (2) increase in specific gravity (decrease in degrees A.P.I.); (3) decrease of energy in the oil; (4) increased viscosity; (5) increased surface tension. As the writer's investigations have been concerned more with the first three items than with changes in viscosity and surface tension the following discussion relates particularly to the volumetric shrinkage of the oil, to the increased specific gravity, and to the decreased energy in the oil, each caused by the liberalion of dissolved gas. One of the most surprising facts that have developed in the study of high-pressure well-head and "bottom-hole" samples is the great reduction in volume that occurs in some oils when the naturally dissolved gas is liberated. High-pressure samples taken from well heads in the Oklahoma City, Kettleman Hills and Ventura, Calif., fields decreased in volume from 11.2 to 40.5 per cent when the dissolved gas was liberated in reducing the pressure on the sample to atmospheric. The amount of shrinkage an oil undergoes when gas is liberated depends upon the quantity of gas liberated and also upon its composition. A given volume of the heavier gases, propane and butane for example, will occupy more space in the oil than an equal volume of methane. The reason for this probably is that the molecules of the heavier gases are larger than those of the lighter gases. When gases are not in solution, and particularly when they are at low pressures, the distance between the gas molecules is so much greater than the dimensions of the molecules themselves that the mere size of the molecules has little effect upon the space occupied by the gas, Avogadro's hypothesis, which in effect states that all gases under the same conditions have the same number of molecules per unit volume, relates to this phenomenon. An analysis of bolting reinforcement of several large [approximately 18 m (60 ft) cube] pillars was performed. The many overcoring stress profiles in pillars at the mine were used to produce generalized stress distributions at various stages in pre- and post-failure. A complete stress-deformation curve was estimated from this data. The effect of pillar bolting on the load-deformation behavior was extrapolated from the observed unbolted behavior. Bolting can increase pillar strength by up to 10 percent. The effect of bolting on general mine stability was examined with a short computer analysis. The computer model was calibrated against measurements performed at the mine, and produced good agreement between measured and modeled stresses. The analysis indicated that bolting increases the bolted pillar safety factors in the event of additional pillar failure by a small amount (approximately 5 percent). Progressive pillar failure is unlikely, because arching transfers most load from yielding pillars to large unmined abutments rather than to the smaller panel pillars.

This discussion will be limited to malleable, commercially pure nickel and some high-nickel alloys, containing more than 50 per cent of nickel, which are produced by The International Nickel Company, Inc. at its Huntington works, West Virginia, from electrolytic nickel or from a nickel-copper sulphide matte. The principal sources of nickel are sulphides of nickel, copper and iron, which are found in the large deposit of pyrrhotite-pentlandite-chalcopyrite ores in the Sudbury area of Ontario, Canada. Pentlandite, a complex nickel-iron sulphide, is the nickel carrier. These ores are concentrated, roasted, and smelted to remove considerable iron and sulphur and to produce a nickel-copper sulphide matte. Separation of the component sulphides of this matte, followed by electrolytic refining, results in the production of electrolytic nickel and electrolytic copper; direct refining of a selected portion of the matte gives the nickel-copper alloy, Monel. FUNDAMENTAL OPERATIONS Melting of the metallic materials is done in natural gas-fired, acid furnaces of the open-hearth, or reverberatory, type, having capacities of 6 to 20 tons; in three-phase, basic, electric-arc furnaces, having capacities of 7 to 20 tons; and in basic, high-frequency induction furnaces having capacities of ½ to 3 tons. Malleable, commercially pure nickel is melted in the acid open-hearth furnace. The charge is sulphur-free, electrolytic nickel, containing 99.9 per cent nickel* and clean mill scrap. Monel, containing approximately two thirds nickel and one third copper, is produced by roasting the nickel-copper sulphide matte to an oxide, smelting the oxide with charcoal in a 20-ton, acid open-hearth furnace, adding clean mill scrap, duplexing to a 20-ton, basic, electric-arc furnace, and refining in this furnace with a lime-fluorspar, carbide slag. Inconel, containing nickel, 80 per cent; chromium, 14 and iron, 6, is melted in the 7-ton electric-arc furnace or the 3-ton induction furnace. The charge is electrolytic nickel, ferrochromium and clean mill scrap. These are the fundamental operations. High-nickel alloys are produced from one of these three materials by additions of suitable amounts of manganese, aluminum, silicon or copper. For example, the age-hardenable alloy, K Monel, is produced from Monel by the addition of approximately 3 per cent of aluminum, and D nickel is produced from nickel by the addition of approximately 4.5 per cent of metallic manganese. For conversion to rods, bars, sheet, strip, tubing and wire forms, by hot-working and cold-working operations, the molten materials are teemed into ingots ranging in size from 14 by 14 by 60 in., 3300 lb., to 36 by 36 by 48 in., 18,000 lb. All ingots are overhauled mechanically before hot working.

The meeting Was called to order by Vice-Chairman Albert Sauveur, Who introduced the speaker of the evening, Utley Wedge, of Ardmore. Pa. Mr. Wedge read a, paper on the chloridizing roasting of copper ores, Which lie illustrated With a stereopticon, and Which will be published in full by the Institute. After Mr. Wedge had closed his paper, Which was received with great interest by all the members. the following discussion took place: Professor Hofman said that iron was formerly thought to bo essential to the Henderson process, but that it is not absolutely essential. Mr. Wedge said that., as far as he knew, the presence of some sulphates Was an absolute necessity, and that lime ores can be worked satisfactorily, although lime has an effect on the subsequent leaching. He added that the low fuel consumption of the latest Wedge furnace is a result of direct application of the combustion gases to the ore. Ten per cent. of fuel Was needed with the muffle furnace. By direct firing lie has been able to reduce the fuel needed to from 2 to 4 per cent. In the latest types of furnaces the uses from the upper hearth are not used. There is doubtless some tem-perature at Which the loss from copper chloride volatilization becomes serious, but in practice on Rio Tinto ores troublesome losses are not experienced.. The copper apparently does not become volatile at the temperatures where we would expect that it would. There are doubtless ores in which there would be serious danger from losses from this source. The latest furnaces do not use the high temperatures that Were needed in the former single-hearth Wedge furnaces.

(written discussion?).-On studying this paper it has occurred to the writer that possibly it was the drilling of the test cores that produced the strains which affected in-juriously the authors' unrested bars. They found that the machining had only a slight effect, but did they also investigate the effect of the drilling by trying rest applied to the bloom sections before the cores were drilled from then? The writer has heard of a similar effect of rest after machining on test bars from castings, and it would seem more reasonable that the ductility was increased because the rests relieved strains pro-duced in chilling the test cores from the blooms, than because of any peculiar combination of solidification and rolling strains in the blooms which did not exist in smaller billets.
