Normally metal powders cannot be ground to sub-micron sizes because of welding and agglomeration phenomena. Through the use of selected grinding aids and grinding fluids, nickel and other metal powders have been ball-milled as fine as 0.1 It was found that certain inorganic salts are more effective grinding aids for metal powders than conventionally used surfactants. METAL and alloy powders are used to produce reagents, pigments, coatings, solders, brazes, and parts for industry by powder metallurgy techniques. They are also combined with refractory compounds to produce cermets and dispersion-hardened products. One of the interests at the Lewis Research Center has been to explore the potentialities of the dispersion strengthening process. Since the work of Ir-mann, many investigators have shown that the strength of dispersion-hardened products may increase with decreasing interparticle spacing.24 One approach to achieving small interparticle spacing is to combine fine refractory compounds and metal powders, preferably below 1 in size. In attempting to obtain fine metal powders, it was found that until very recently the best that could be obtained from commercial suppliers, particularly of ductile metals, was about 1.0 . Interest was therefore developed in providing finer metal powders for dispersion-hardening studies. Information obtained from the literature, from others working in the field, and from prior experimental work performed at NASA, led to a consideration of ball-milling as a technique to produce the desired materials. Some of the variables associated with ball-milling are the size, material, and nature of construction of the grinding container; the nature and amount of the grinding material and material to be ground; and the nature and amount of the grinding liquid and grinding aid, if employed, and the grinding time. In all ball-milling, welding and agglomeration can oc- cur as well as grinding. Because of the tendency of ductile metals to weld together, they are difficult to grind.5 The ultimate particle size obtained on grinding is generally the one at which the rate of grinding becomes equal to the rate of welding. To help delay welding and thus obtain smaller particle sizes, grinding aids are often employed. The principal objective of this investigation was to produce submicron metal powders by ball-milling the powders with selected grinding aids and grinding fluids. A secondary objective has been to attempt to explain the variations observed in grinding behavior by considering possible grinding mechanisms and correlating various parameters with grinding effectiveness. Three groups of ball-milling experiments were run; one in which the grinding aid was varied, a second in which the grinding fluid was varied, and a third in which the material being ground was varied MATERIALS, APPARATUS, AND PROCEDURE In the first group of experiments in which the grinding aid was varied Inco Carbonyl Grade B nickel powder initially 2.5 (all sizes refer to average particle size as measured by Fisher Sub -sieve Sizer) was used as the material being ground and 200-proof ethyl-alcohol as the grinding fluid. Surfactants, representative of typical organic structures, were selected as grinding aids. Inorganic salts used as grinding aids were chosen on the basis of the size and valence of their ions. Water soluble salts were used in order to facilitate their removal from the slurry after grinding. In the second set of experiments, grinding of the 2.5- Ni powder was tried in four different grinding liquids; water, cyclohexane, n -heptane, and methy-lene chloride. In this study seven grinding aids selected from those tried in the first group of experiments were employed. In the third group of experiments 200-proof ethyl alcohol was again used as the grinding fluid to mill Cu, Cr, Fe, Ag, and Ni powders of various initial particle sizes' All mill charges contained 300 ml of grinding liquid and 3000 g of 1/2 in. stainless steel balls. A new theoretical treatment has been obtained for the behavior of pattern waterflood injection wells when closed in. Two cases are treated: Case I where oil and water are assumed to have the same properties, and Case 2 where they arc different. In applying the method, one plots log (p — p,) vs closed-in time, where p is well-bore pressure at any tims and p, is static pressure. The value of p. is determined by trial and error as that value which makes the plot linear at large time. A value for the permeability-thickness product can be determined from the intercept of this linear part, and a value of the skin factor from the injection pressure at time of closing in. Application of the method to data from water floods at three fields seems to give reasonable results. For the case of unit mobility ratio, it is proved that this new method should give the same value for permeability-thickness product as the conventional pressure build-up method. In addition, the new method gives correct values for static pressure, whereas the conventional method does not, often indicating negative static pressures. The new method may be used in cases where the surface pressure persists after closing in as well as in cases where it does not. INTRODUCTION It is of considerable interest and importance to be able to determine the characteristics of the reservoir in an area surrounding a water injection well. Thus, if we can determine early in the life of an injection well that there is a considerable "skin effect", remedial measures can be started before a full-scale pattern flood begins. Similarly, if it can be shown that a gradual buildup of skin effect is occurring with time, measures to free the water of plugging material can be taken. Determination of static pressure in the water-injection well may show that the water is entering a thief zone and not the desired reservoir. Finally, determination of the permeability of the sand around the injection well will allow estimation of the future relation between injection pressure and rate. It should be possible to determine average reservoir permeability, skin effect and static pressure from pressure fall-off data. However, at the time we began work on this subject, it was thought that no adequate theory on which to base such determinations' was available. According to the conventional method which considers the reservoir to be filled with one fluid of small compressibility (see Van Everdingen, Joers2, and Nowak2), shut-in pressure is plotted vs log where is injection time, and At is closed-in time. The physical significance of injection time, may well be questioned in this case, since in a reservoir completely filled with a single fluid (as required by this theory) and with input and output rates equal, the pressure behavior after an initial transient is independent of t,. Attempts by our Tulsa area to use this theory led to negative values of static pressure in most cases. Because of these limitations of the method discussed above, it was decided to attempt to develop a new theory of pressure behavior in water injection wells, one which would apply when there is a gas saturation, as is so often the case in water floods. In the following treatment the assumptions and basic equations are given first, then the method of application of the equations. A complete example is given to clarify details of application. All difficult mathematics has been placed in the appendices so that the reader can follow the text without difficulty. However, if he wishes only to apply the results without knowing the basis for them, he can learn how to do this from reading only the sections entitled "Plotting of Experimental Results" and "Example." ASSUMPTIONS AND BASIC EQUATIONS Statement of Problem It will be assumed that a horizontal layer of constant thickness contains in its pore system a mixture of oil, gas and water. The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.

PYROPHYLLITE is a hydrous aluminum silicate (A12Si4O10(OH)2)1 that occurs in both the foliated and the massive forms. The foliated variety resembles talc in that it has a greasy feel, a pearly luster, perfect basal cleavage, and usually is white, although in some deposits apple green, gray, brown, russet, and nearly black specimens may be found. The massive deposits of pyrophyllite yield pearl gray to light tan aggregates, some of which are so friable that they may be crushed with the hands into a fine gritty powder. Frequently specimens of the massive variety are studded with crystals of radial structure. The mineral has a specific gravity of about 2.7 and a hardness of 1 on Mohs' scale.1 The chemical composition of commercial pyrophyllite reflects the mineralogy of the deposits, which, according to Stuckey,2 contain pyrophyllite and quartz, together with chloritoid, sericite, and a few other minerals of negligible importance. The latter, he says, "are noticed in but small quantities to the extent they might occur as accessory constituents of an igneous rock or as products of regional metamorphism or weathering. . . . Quartz is abundant everywhere except in the very best grades of pyrophyllite." Analyses of specimens from several deposits are listed in Table 1, showing that the silica content varies from 57 to 73 per cent and the alumina from 22 to 33 per cent. Oxides of iron and the alkaline metals are collectively present, with one exception, to an extent of about 1 to 1.5 per cent. SOURCES At present, North Carolina is the only commercial source of pyrophyllite, although the mineral has been found in small quantities in many parts of the world. THE Utah coal field to which the name Book Cliffs is applied runs in a northeast direction from Mt. Hilgarde, in Sevier county, along the escarpment of the Wasatch Plateau to the vicinity of Castle Gate, thence southeast along the Book cliffs, which lie to the north of and generally within sight of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad,. to the Colorado line. The Book cliffs form the southern escarpment of the West and East Travaputs Plateaus, and vary in height from 2,000 to 6,000 ft. At the base of the Wasatch and Book Cliffs escarpments is a broad plain known as Castle valley. The coal beds outcropping in the escarpments along this valley are worked on the largest scale of any in the State, and this particular area is known locally as the Castle Valley coal field. Geology The Book cliffs are capped by the Tertiary-Eocene-formation, consisting of varicolored shales; buff sandstone, conglomerate, and subordinate thin beds of limestone. Different sections show diverse stratigraphy. This is mainly the Wasatch formation, and lies unconformably upon the rocks of the Upper Cretaceous. Fig. 1 is a generalized section of the rocks of the. Book Cliffs field. The Mesaverde formation contains the cliff-making rocks of the Book cliffs, and is composed of massive sandstone interbedded with sandy shales and beds of coal and carbonaceous shale. The sandstone has greater resistance to erosion and the formation is characterized by escarpment ledges and cliffs. The shale is commonly sandy and is drab in color, but where it is associated with the coal it is usually carbonaceous. The sandstone is generally buff, though occasionally it is white, and in places red. The bedding ranges from thin to massive. In the lower part. of the formation the sandstone is red in

The Glidden Co., a newcomer to the mining industry, will be putting on stream its Lakehurst mine and concentrator this spring. Ilmenite-bearing placer sands will be mined and concentrated in a spanking new combination gravity, magnetic and high-tension separation plant. Glidden, well known as a paint, chemical and food manufacturer, consumes titanium dioxide as pigment in its paint business. The commodity is produced at the company's Adrian D. Joyce Works in Baltimore from ilmenite purchased in India and Australia, The Lakehurst operation, handily located in Ocean County, N. J., will dampen any deficiencies in quantity or price which might occur from foreign suppliers. This objective is no overnight concoction of The Glidden Co., because the move at Lakehurst was preceded by an attempt to start up in Florida. That project was abandoned when it was found that the titanium dioxide values were largely in rutile-a mineral which does not lend itself readily to the digestion process of the Baltimore chemical plant.

On the basis of both laboratory and pilot-scale tests, a newly developed high-tension electrostatic process is technically and economically feasible for the production of iron ore superconcentrates containing 0.02 to 0.20% silica at iron recoveries of 85 to 90%. The process can be used to recover both a superconcentrate and a pellet-grade concentrate, from a feed containing middlings, and the system is not unduly upset from changes in feed structure and composition. The adverse affect of excess quantities of material finer than 30 microns, i.e., above 10% in quantity can be avoided by a desliming step. Finally, because of the cost of drying, the best feed for the process appears to be dry-ground ores as well as spiral, flotation, or magnetic concentrates.

THE diffusion of magnesium and silicon from the core into the high-purity coating of Alclad sheet is important commercially, and led to the use of a duplex product for the study of diffusion by means of spectro-graphic analysis of successive layers. It has been found that in the duplex materials the diffusion of magne-sium from an undersaturated aluminum-magnesium alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating is approximately of the same order of magnitude as the diffusion of silicon from a saturated aluminum-silicon alloy into its high-purity aluminum coating. However, if magnesium and silicon are both present in the alloy in the ratio of Mg2Si they appear to diffuse in the approximate ratio of this compound. Finally, if the alloy contains silicon in excess of the amount required by magnesium silicide, the amount of diffused silicon in the high-purity aluminum coating will also be in excess. The interdiffusion of metals in the solid state is of both scientific and technical interest, because it is helpful in the study of the alloy structure and in the solution of problems pertaining to the strength and surface condition of the fabricated product. W. C. Roberts-Austen1 carried out the first quantitative determination of the coefficient of diffusion of gold into lead. This classical experiment was followed by a series of investigations on the diffusion of metals and nonmetals in iron and steel and in nonferrous metals and alloys. Recently the diffusion of copper in coated strong aluminum alloys was investigated by A. Burkhardt2. This appeared to be the first published investigation on the diffusion of metals into aluminum.

A definite field of usefulness has developed for the brine-leaching processes of removing lead from ores and other products, so this paper reviews the developments, both in practice and in research, that have taken place since the publication of two earlier papers on this subject.' Several commercial plants are now in operation and a number of semi-commercial test plants have been operated in an effort to determine the limitations of brine leaching and to compare the results with other forms of treatment. Briefly, the brine leaching of lead depends on the fact that lead chloride and lead sulfate are soluble in saturated sodium-chloride solutions. In dilute brines, the solubility of the lead salt is less than in pure water; but in the strong brines, the solubility is greater than in pure water due, supposedly, to the formation of a double sodium-lead chloride. This is seen in Fig. 1, which shows the results of M. Demassieux2 on the solubility of lead chloride in sodium-chloride solutions of different concentrations and at three temperatures. The curves are not those given by Demassieux but are calculated from his results in order to convert them to units common in metallurgical work. The right-hand branch of each curve shows that if the solution is kept in contact with solid sodium chloride the lead chloride can be almost entirely displaced from solution, but that brines which are saturated with sodium chloride, but are not in contact with the solid salt, have a very high solubility for lead chloride. The diagram gives the analysis of the solution in grams of lead per liter, although the substance actually in solution is lead chloride. Book Review Mexico, TODAY AND Tomorrow. By E. D. Trowbridge, Detroit. The McMillan Co., New York, 1919, 353 pp., 7;2 X 5 in. $2.00. The first eight chapters are devoted to an historical narrative of the Mexican peoples from the earliest times to the close of the war with the United States in 1345. "In dealing with events antedating what may be termed modern Mexico" the author has "made no attempt at original research, and so far as concerns anything prior to 1900, the work here presented is a repetition, a reflection, of the findings of opinions of Fiske, Prescott, Bancroft, Luis Perez Verdia and other authorities." The remainder of the hook deals with Mexico during and since the Diaz regime. It is interesting throughout but is not always convincing or consistent. Social conditions are described in a way illuminating and possible only to one who is familiar with the peon and his hitherto seemingly hopeless position in reference to the wage system and church oppression. In fact, the author makes the hold accusation that the "primitive rather than immoral" condition of the peons in the matter of their marital relations is due to the disregard of the church for their welfare and capabilities. The true accounts of the Madero revolution and the Huerta regime read like fascinating medieval fiction. The reason given for men remaining in the Madero army is still the controlling one regarding any of the armies there. "They had horses, arms, all the food they wanted, money to spend and no work." The discussion of Mexican financial schemes is wholly from the Carranza viewpoint. To meet a monthly deficit of ten million pesos the author says "the government forced loans from the National Bank, and Bank of London and Mexico, and repeated the operation several times, finally practically exhausting their bullion and cash reserves. Hostile foreigners refer to this operation as the looting of the hanks! Drastic as this action was, there was good ground on which to justify it." However, that necessity knows no law is never an acceptable tenet except to him who applies the screws. The discussion of the economic problems and their solution is rather chimerical and presupposes a civil and national virtue in the present government not discernible except to one ultra friendly. The book is an interesting exposition of the very much involved situation from the viewpoint of approval of both the Carranza government and the attitude of the United States in its dealings with him. The editing of the book leaves something to he desired. P. E. B.

A series of aluminum single crystals was subjected to axially symmetric flow by drawing through dies. The orientation dependence of the drawing stress, which indicates the resistance to this type of flow, compares reasonably with predictions of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill. Measured lattice rotations likewise are generally consistent with theory. The most successful analyses of the plastic behavior of polycrystalline metal and its relationship to single crystal behavior are those of Taylor1-3 and of Bishop and Hill.4-6 The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical test of some of the basic assumptions involved in these theories. Both treatments apply to fcc metals and assume the shape change of each grain in a polycrystal to be the same as that of the polycrystal as a whole. Thus for a randomly oriented polycrystal extended under uni-axial tension each grain is assumed to undergo axially symmetric flow. dey = dez = -1/2dex, deyZ = dezx = dexy = 0 [l] where x, y, and z are a set of orthogonal axes, x being the tensile axis. Although [011.] oriented grains in bcc and fcc metals may depart markedly from this ideal behavior,7,8 the assumption is probably quite reasonable for most grains. Under a uniaxial tensile stress, ox, the work dW per unit volume expended in producing an increment of axial strain dex is, dW=oxdex [21 Since this work is expended in slip, dw =STi dyi 131 where Ti and yi are the shear stress and shear strain on the active slip systems. In both analyses Ti is taken to be the same on all slip systems, and dependent only on the total prior shear strain on all systems, so dw = Tdy [41 where t is the shear stress required for slip and y is the sum of the shear strain yi on all slip systems. Combining 121 and [4] and defining M = oX/T The ratio M is a generalized Schmid factor. It relates the tensile stress required for axially symmetric flow, ox, to the basic shear stress, 7, and it also expresses the ratio of crystallographic strain, y, to the tensile strain, Ex It depends only on the orientation of the crystal. Taylor evaluated M for various orientations by finding the least value of dy/dEx which could satisfy the shape change. Bishop and Hill, on the other hand, found M by considering the relative work (1/T)dW/dEx expended by stress states which could activate enough slip systems to produce the shape changes. The results of both methods appear to be equivalent, although certain omissions were made in Taylor's original work. The orientation dependence of M, calculated by the second method,9 is shown in Fig. 1. Taylor used the average 2= 3.06 for all possible orientations to predict the tensile stress-strain curve (oxvs Ex) for a random polycrystal from the shear stress-strain curve (t vs y) of a single crystal. Changes in M from lattice rotation were neglected so points on the ox vs ex curve were simply taken at ox = 3.06t and e = y/3.06 from corresponding points on the t vs y curve. Recent extension of the analyses of Taylor and of Bishop and Hill to crystallographically textured metals has been used to relate plastic anisotropy to textures, and to predict the potential texture hardening that could result from texture control.9 Unfortunately there have been relatively few experimental tests of the underlying theory. Taylor found that the tensile stress-strain curve of polycrystalline aluminum did agree reasonably well with that predicted from a single-crystal T-y curve. Introduction The concept that the flow stress for plastic deformation of metals in the work hardening range is a function of the instantaneous values of the strain, strain rate and test temperature was promulgated by Ludwick' many years ago. This thought has been more or less a guiding principle throughout the immediate period of development and growth of mechanical metallurgy. It has been tacitly assumed or knowingly applied to many investigations on the plastic behavior of metals. Spurred by the theoretical interest and practical importance of the plastic behavior of metals, many investigators have attempted to determine empirical, semi-empirical, and theoretical equations2-l8 relating the flow stress with the strain, strain rate, and temperature. Although the applications of such equations have been extensive, the experimental verification of the existence of a mechanical equation of state is weak. Furthermore, some of the available evidence on plastic flow appears to suggest that no simple functional relation between stress, strain-rate, strain and temperature can exist. The mechanical equation of state demands that Where a = true stress = loadlinstantaneous area e = true strain _ Instantaneous gauge length ~ initial gauge length i = true strain rate T = temperature This formulation implies that da is an exact differential. Therefore the flow stress (a) is a function of the instantaneous values of the strain (c) the strain rate (i) and the temperature (T), independent of the previous mechanical or thermal history. Having reached a certain strain, strain rate, and temperature, by any path whatsoever, a definite and fixed value of the flow stress should be obtained. One check on the validity of the mechanical equation of state is easily obtained. Consider the following three tests on the stress-strain curve at constant temperature: A. Strain at rate :I B. Strain at rate it C. Strain at rate 11 to el and continue test at &. A graphical representation of possible results of such tests are shown in Fig I. If, for strains greater than el, test (C) data coincide exactly with the data from test (B), as shown in Fig ra, a limited verification of the mechanical equation of state is obtained for the range of strain rates from il to iz. THIS paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferrous metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties-and this we consider to constitute the elements of metal technology-might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary

The effects of autogenous grinding and conventional grinding on the floatabilities of copper-nickel sulfides from Duluth gabbro were investigated. At the same mesh-of-grind copper, nickel, and cobalt recoveries were higher and residual sulfur in the flotation tailings was lower with the autogenously ground pulps. With the ball-mill ground pulps the residual sulfur in the tailings could not be lowered to the level attained by the autogenously ground pulps even at increased levels of the collector addition. From mineralogical examinations of concentrate and tailings samples, an electrochemical interaction between grinding media and sulfide minerals was thought to have a greater effect on sulfide mineral flotation behavior than the breakage characteristics of the ore samples in these two types of mills.

In a continuous countercurrent exchange process, an alteration in any one of the operating conditions has a complex effect on the others, which can only be predicted by employing the transfer unit or the theoretical stage theory on a basis of trial and error. A simple method is described for illustrating diagrammatically the behavior of a counter-current system, the equations being simplified by means of a concept the maximum hypothetical exchange performance. An example based on a typical metallurgical system is given, in which a divalent metal is recovered from a dilute solution, the resin being regenerated continuously by a monovalent ion. Useful conclusions are drawn from a study of the theory. Practical methods for performing continuous ion exchange are discussed, and the development of equipment based on modified ore dressing jigs is described. A swinging sieve jig contactor is evaluated experimentally. DURING the last decade, the new synthetic ion exchange resins have been applied extensively in industries outside the field of water treatment, but there is no record of a continuous counter-current process operating on an industrial scale. Attempts have been made to devise a satisfactory process but many problems remain to be solved. The basic principles of continuous processes will be outlined, as well as the major problems in their operation and the progress made in the CSIRO laboratories toward the development of satisfactory industrial techniques. In the metallurgical field ion exchange resins can be used for various applications such as the recovery and concentration of valuable metals from mine waters,' the regeneration of pickling and plating liquors," the prevention of pollution by waste effluents and the recovery of the constituents from them," and the purification of valuable metals such as the rare earths by chromatographic fractionation on columns of ion exchange resins.7,8 . Turther applications undoubtedly will be found in the field of hydrometallurgy where the use of ion exchange resins would enable direct extraction of the desired metal ion from the filtered leach liquor or the leach pulp. For example, an ion exchange process has been described recently for the extraction of gold from a cyanide leach pulp." A continuous process would have advantages in many applications over the usual process employing a fixed bed and intermittent cycle. In a recovery process, it would yield a product stream of steady purity and concentration, it would waste less water in rinsing, and if the contacting apparatus were efficient less resin would be used, since each portion of the resin would be cycled as soon as it was loaded instead of lying idle until the whole bed was ready for regeneration. A very major advantage is that it would be simpler to control automatically. It is probable that continuous operation will be the key for really large scale applications of ion exchange. The flow sheet of a continuous ion exchange recovery-concentration process is illustrated diagrammatically in Fig. 1. Dilute liquor containing the valuable ion flows through the stripping section countercurrently to a moving bed of resin and leaves after a final contact with freshly regenerated resin. The resin leaves the unit almost in equilibrium with the incoming liquor and then flows to the regenerating unit where it is treated by a slow countercurrent flow of concentrated regenerant solution. The adsorbed ion is displaced from the resin and appears in the concentrated product stream. The resin then must pass through a rinse unit or section where regenerant entrained by the resin is washed back into the regeneration section by water. The regenerated and washed resin is then recycled back to the stripping section. I. Theoretical Operating Behavior of Continuous Ion Exchange Stripping System The simple theory of continuous ion exchange is analogous to that of solvent extraction and other diffusional transfer operations and is governed by the equilibrium relationship, the mass balance, the rates of mass transfer, and the contacting efficiency of the unit. Equilibrium Relationship—The relative affinity of two ions A and B, for a particular resin immersed in their solution, can be expressed by plotting compositions of the solution against compositions which exist in resin in equilibrium with those solutions, i.e. C/Co vs q/a where C, is the total normality of the solution, C is the normality of ion A in the solution, a is the total exchange capacity of the resin in gram equivalents

(written discussion?).-In this exposition of experimental data, the author infers, indirectly at least, that by the Charpy test information was obtained that led to the improve-ment of certain ordnance parts and that this improvement could not have been attained without the Charpy test. On examination of the data, however, it appears that the important point of the whole matter was that while the material had been accepted from the results of longitudinal tensile tests, it was really transverse ductility that was desired. The writer has no desire to attempt to detract from the value of the paper or to discredit the Charpy test in any way, but he would like to ask the author if he will not give more clearly his reasons for preferring the Charpy impact test for investigational and control work of this kind, over the more usual tensile test made in a transverse direction. The tensile test pieces are more cheaply made than the square notched impact bars; and from the former the limit of elasticity and the ultimate strength as well as, the ductility are obtained, while in the Charpy test only one property is measured. It does not seem that the author has shown a sufficient reason for favoring the latter test, when both it and the trans-verse tensile test served his purpose equally well in indicating the proper metal and treatment required for his special forging, and it is hoped that this reason will be given more clearly as a matter of useful general information.

Techniques for in-situ dewatering of tailings and slimes include evaporation, decantation, drainage under self weight, drainage by surcharging, and electro-osmosis. A promising technique for increasing drainage efficiency is a vertical, wall-drain system, which can be constructed in an impoundment concurrently with deposition of slurried tailings. The vertical drains, which can be constructed from sand or from the coarse fraction of a tailings stream, greatly speed the rate of consolidation of the fine tailings or slimes. The performance of a wall drain system and the semitidy of consolidation efficiency to certain variables or system parameters are examined. These parameters include the slime deposition rate, ratio of drain to slime permeability, drain width, and drain spacing.
