The conditions affecting the supply of casinghead gas, the different degrees of productivity, the difficulty of determining the quantities utilized, and the evaluation of the gas in casinghead-gasoline units and related data, having an economic bearing on the industry as a whole, are important questions and offer an interesting field for study. Casinghead-gas data have been gathered in some of the oil fields of Oklahoma where testing work has been done regularly and the volumes of casinghead gas were available. The area covered embraces 219 scattered leases in 29 townships, with a total of 18,039 acres and 1921 wells. The accompanying table gives specific locations of the areas under consideration, number of leases, range depth of wells, average age of production, sand depths and oil production data. The results of this investigation are set forth in the accompanying charts, showing volumes of casinghead gas in 6-month periods from Jan. 1, 1918, to June 30, 1921, when full record was available, production of casinghead gasoline, average productivity of the gas in gallons per thousand cubic feet, average price of the gas and the market price of the casinghead gasoline. The cases enumerated in the table and the data shown in the graphs do not represent the greater part of oil or casinghead gas production from any one township, nor are the leases contiguous. The properties in each township, however, may be considered as typical of general conditions, such as the date of completion of wells, depth, character, and thickness of oil sand, time of pumping, present oil production, Vacuum carried on wells, and usual operating practices. It was deemed advisable to subdivide the time into 6-mo. periods, as it was impracticable to make the tests more frequently, furthermore 6 mo. is probably the minimum period within which there would occur a noticeable increase in the productivity of the gas. It must be remembered that the figures on volumes are subject to the usual irregularities and relative inaccuracies of meter measurenlents of gas under varying degrees

The accompanying figures show a jig arranged for separating the middle product or middlings obtained in the concentration of certain ores, minerals, coal, etc. In the preparation for sizing, prior to jigging, of ore-bearing minerals, coal, etc., with their impurities, it is generally desirable to avoid reducing them to unnecessarily small sizes. Where the impurities adhere to the mineral particles or are disseminated through its mass, it is generally necessary to crush to such a fineness as will unlock the minerals from the gangue. If a considerable proportion of the material consists of mixtures of the minerals and gangue, each in large size, and a lesser proportion consists of a mixture of the two, in smaller sizes of various dimensions, it is not always desirable to reduce the whole to such size as would be required to liberate completely the pieces of ore and gangue in the finest mixtures. An approximate mathematical solution is found for the problem of unidimensional solidification of a slab of a binary alloy with time-dependent surface temperature. For the model considered, the solid skin does not form until the liquidus front has moved a certain distance. This distance depends on the rate of cooling and can be as large as half the thickness of the slab when the cooling rate is small. Assuming that the THE process of unidirectional solidification of binary alloys with constant surface temperature was analyzed by the present authors in a recent paper.' In the previous analyses, the surface temperature was considered to be lowered instantaneously, at the beginning of solidification, from its initial value to some surface temperature decreases linearly with time and that the solidus and the liquidus lines are straight, calculations are made of the temperature and concentration distributions, movements of the liquidus and the solidus fronts, as well as changes of temperature, solid fraction, and solute concentration of the liquid at the center of the slab. arbitrary temperature, lower than the solidus temperature. Although the solution of the problem for the case of constant surface temperature has some practical applications, instantaneous changes of temperature are physically impossible. T'HE Columbia Section of the A. 1. M. E. took charge of the Western Mining Convention on Oct. 3, and the meeting was held under their auspices. W. L. Zeigler, chairman of the Section, called the session to order. The first paper on the program, "Lead Refining Practice at Bunker Hill Smelter," was presented in per-son by the author, A. F. Beasley, superintendent of the smelter. He pointed out the differences in the refining practice at Bunker Hill from other American refineries. The Bunker Hill plant was the first to adopt the liquation process for silver skims as developed in Australia. Details were given of operating practice with results. F. F. Colcord questioned the author in regard to the kind of metal best suited for kettles, which was said to be cast iron.

IN spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which compli-cate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modifica-tion does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions.

The occurrence of rock bursts in deep metal/nonmetal mines presents a major hazard to their safe and economical operation. As part of a Bureau of Mines program to reduce rock bursts in deep vein mining, a project was conducted in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District of Idaho to evaluate and demonstrate the mining of a destressed sill pillar using undercut-and-fill methods. A 50-ft sill pillar in a burst-prone area was preconditioned by drilling and blasting vertical holes in the ore. After raises were driven through the destressed pillar to the level above, it was mined by the undercut-and-fill method. The conclusion from this demonstration is that the combination of ore preconditioning and underhand mining resulted in greatly improved rock burst and ground control, allowing safe and efficient mining of a potentially hazardous, burst-prone pillar.

Western Australia is the home of much that is new and interesting in the gold-mining industry. Some of the gold deposits are outranked for size and value by nothing yet discorered, while the value of the ores is, in many cases, rivaled only by their complex character. As in all parts of the world, many of the ore-bodies occur in ways which tax the skill of the miner in following them; and among these the writer considers the case of the East Murchison United more interesting than the average. This is one of the leading gold-mines of the colony in point of production, and is situated near the town of Lawlers, in the East Murchison district. The country for several miles around the mine is mainly granite, and the line of outcrop on which this mine is located can be traced for a long distance. As will be seen from the accompanying plan (Fig. I), there are, at the water-level, two nearly parallel veins running slightly north of west. Structural Features.—The most striking peculiarity of these veins, and the hardest to understand, is their tendency to send out horizontal stringers or side-veins. These vary in size from a veinlet an inch thick to a veil] several feet in width, and they extend with great persistence into the wall-rock on either side of the vein. This tendency is shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The usual signs of a movement of the wall-rocks, such as a ribbon-structure of the quartz and a well-defined gouge or seam of clay along the walls, are in many places lacking, while in other places they appear strongly marked. They seem more in evidence below water-level than above. It is a commonlly accepted idea that when a gold-bearing vein loses in width, it often gains in value. In this instance, however, the direct opposite is the case; for in many stopes it has been possible to leave the narrow portions of the vein to act as pillars, and to extract only the wide portions, which are

Many mining engineers considering in place leaching for the first time are uncertain as to how to evaluate ore bodies for potential leachability. Evidence presented in this report emphasizes the critical role of permeability in such evaluations. Whether an engineer is considering leaching "tight" formations typified by the porphyry copper deposits of the southwest or the permeable uraniferous sandstones of Texas and Wyoming, permeability measurements are the keystone of any testing program. Permeability tests range from cheap and easy to highly expensive and sophisticated operations. Constant head, variable head, and pumping tests all have application in evaluating ore bodies for in-place leaching. Costs of these tests will not unduly deflate the pocketbooks of most mining companies. The basic procedures for selecting and running these field tests--including preparing suitable wells--are reviewed for the benefit of newcomers to in-place leaching.

This paper presents a method whereby the amount of misplaced material and the difficulty of the separation can be used to compare coal cleaning equipment of all types, from effectiveness and capacity standpoints. The correlations presented do not include all types of equipment currently available, but the method can be used to evaluate any make or type of coal cleaning equipment, both old and new. THE relative performance of coal washing equipment, or the effectiveness with which any type or make of equipment removes impurities from coal, has been most difficult to evaluate in the past. The most widely used yardstick is the Frazer and Yancey efficiency formula developed in 1922,' but Yancey in a later article states that "washers treating coals of different density composition or operating at different densities of separation cannot be compared directly on the basis of this criterion."' Prior to and since 1922, a variety of other methods has been used for comparison purposes, including the distribution curve, the error area, and the "ecart probable" or probable error. Yancey and Geer in discussing these methods conclude, "Performance can be evaluated in a number of different ways, with the choice of the proper method to use being dictated by the objectives of the investigation and the data available."' It is true that performance can be evaluated in a variety of ways, but if the equipment is to be evaluated on an effectiveness basis, there should be only one universal comparison method. Varying methods have been used because one universal comparison method has not been found or developed. In the article previously quoted, Yancey and Geer state in clear terms the primary concept for a universal comparison method: "One of the simplest, and certainly one of the most obvious evaluations of washery performance is the quantity of sink material in the washed coal and the float material in the refuse. If the washery products are tested at the density at which the washing unit is operated, the sink in the washed coal and the float in the refuse represent material that has been misplaced." The quantity of misplaced material was used as a criterion of washery performance by Lincoln in 1913," by the United States Bureau of Mines in 1938,' by Hancock in 1947," and by the national French research agency Cerchar in recent years.' In 1950 Andersone proposed the use of this criterion as an efficiency value to replace the Frazer and Yancey formula. However, none of the above-mentioned investigators used the misplaced material concept in a manner that would provide universal coal-cleaning equipment comparisons. The Correlation Theory The ideal coal cleaning process would treat all sizes and would make a perfect separation at any given specific gravity. All material lower in density than the desired value would report in the coal product and all material higher in density would report in the refuse product. Unfortunately, no known cleaning process achieves this goal and there seems little likelihood that any process yet to be invented will do more than approach it. When coal is treated in volume under operating conditions, it is impossible to avoid mechanical entrapment, fluctuations in throughput and effective gravity of separation, and the creation of turbulent currents, even when a true heavy-liquid bath is used and the feed is closely sized and contains little intermediate gravity material. This being so, it is possible to appreciate the difficulties inherent in trying to obtain a perfect separation when treating a wide range of sizes and a feed containing high percentages of intermediate material, using turbulent currents to help create the effective separation gravity, under operating conditions which normally tend to be on the overload side. When coal is separated from refuse in any coal cleaning equipment, some refuse always reports to the coal and some coal to the refuse; the writer therefore assumed that there should be a relationship between the total amount of misplaced material produced by any given piece of equipment and the difficulty of separation as represented by the percentage of near gravity material in the feed. An on-stream particle size analyzer (PSA) based on the sedimentation principle has been developed to the commercial prototype stage and tested at a concentrator. The current instrument gives a direct reading of the weight % finer than any two sizes, although the capability exists for providing a complete size distribution through the sieve and sub-sieve range. The readings obtained at intervals of about 10 minutes are derived from 0.5-L samples of slurry cut from the monitored stream. The accuracy of the PSA meets the requirements of process control.

CHIEF among the varied problems facing the mine-manager is that of vein-structure and origin, which is highly important as a guide to successful discovery and development. If metalliferous deposits can be traced to the intrusion of waters along definite lines, then is there something tangible for him to study. But when he is told by a geologist that metalliferous deposits are due to some other cause, like magmatic differentiation, while not perhaps discouraged, he is impressed with a vague sense of new worlds to be conquered. In 1897, while manager of the War Eagle mine at Rossland, B. C., where, previously, the ore-bodies had not been supposed to occur as veins, I suggested to visiting members of the Canadian Geological Survey that, perhaps, the structure of the pyrrhotite-bodies of that mine, which had been proved to occur along well-defined fractures, might throw some light on the similar deposits of Sudbury, then held to be basic aggregations from the original magma. Later investigation has at least provoked discussion of this last deduction, questioning its correctness and suggesting that, perhaps, the deposits are actual veins. The following extract from a paper by J. E. Spurr 1 is quoted, because it sets forth Mr. Spurr's theory of the quartz-occurrences of the Silver Peak mines, which will be discussed in this article. It also graphically describes the attendant geological features. '' The Drinkwater group of mines, which is the most important part of the Blair gold properties, and which has produced practically all of the million dollars' worth of ore, as above stated, may be taken as typical of the gold-veins which, though widespread and numerous, show a wonderful similarity of character. The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. THE autumn is the time that nearly all the special groups within the broad field of the Institute's activitives chose for their own special meetings. The big annual meeting in New York in February has its own special advantages, but to realize them involves sacrificing others. A meeting of a smaller group with the subjects brought up for discussion much more closely limited to a single field of interest has some advantages that a big general meeting cannot possibly have. And so the custom has gradually developed of having these smaller meetings in the autumn, at con¬venient places, so the men will not have to travel too far from the job to be present. Sometimes the meetings have for their field of interest a single phase of mineral technology, and are called divisional, and at other times they cover a diversity of topics that are locally important in that geographical area, and are then called regional meetings. Of the five meetings to be held this fall, four are divisional and one regional. Two of the divisional meetings are to be held in the same place at the same time, but with programs so arranged that they do not conflict.

The rate of crack Propagation thvough a solid meta1 in the presence of a liquid metal has been calculated. The crack is assumed to propagate by solution of the solid in the liquid under the influence of an applied stress, with volume diffusion of the dissolved solute through the liquid controlling the propagation. The calculated velocities can be tens of centimeters per second or higher. THE embrittlement of normally ductile solid metals by liquid metals has been the subject of extensive study, as summarized in the book by Rostoker, McCaughey, and arkuus.' In experimental studies of liquid-metal embrittlement it is usually concluded that the observed crack-propagation rates are too high to be accounted for by diffusion processes. Diffusion is considered to be an unimportant factor and various other mechanisms are invoked to account for the experimental observations. The similarities of liquid-metal embrittlement to stress-corrosion cracking, to hydrogen embrittlement of steel, and to low-temperature embrittlement of bcc metals are frequently used as analogies for these mechanisms.1"3 The present paper assesses how rapidly a crack could propagate by a mechanism of volume diffusion through the liquid metal. We assume that the crack propagates by solution of the solid in the liquid at the crack tip under the influence of the applied stress and diffusion of the dissolved solute away from the crack tip. The model uses only macroscopic thermodynamic, kinetic, and elastic concepts. The calculations indicate that this dissolution-diffusion mechanism can give high crack velocities. In some previous treatments4'' of crack propagation in a liquid-metal environment the fundamental step has been the breaking of atomic bonds at the crack tip. The liquid greatly decreases the energy necessary to break these bonds. The present model assumes the crack is filled with liquid metal; the presence of the liquid is essential because diffusion through the liquid is assumed to control the rate of propagation. With proper modification this model could also apply to stress corrosion in a liquid environment. THEORY Consider a crack in a homogeneous elastic continuum, ignoring all the structural details of the solid. This neglects a host of metallurgical details which can be significant in the problem of liquid-metal embrittlement;' but this simple assumption is a useful approach in evaluating the role of diffusion through the liquid. The stress distribution around the crack tip establishes a gradient in the chemical potential at the tip, which causes a diffusion flux through the liquid away from the tip. The solid-liquid interfacial tension works against crack propagation, since propagation requires creation of interfacial area. From these two considerations we derive the diffusion flux, which then yields an expression for the velocity of the crack tip. The concentration of the solute in the liquid, C, is equal to the equilibrium concentration in the presence of an unstressed, flat surface, Co, plus the excess concentration due to the stress, AC(a), plus the excess concentration due to capillarity, AC(y): We calculate AC(o) and AC(y) and then obtain the diffusion flux. Consider (Fig. 1) a long flat crack of length 2L, thickness 2r, and tip radius r, where r remains constant as the crack propagates in the positive x direction. There is no stress ay in the y direction across the flat surfaces of the crack. The main results from a programme of theoretical work on various aspects of the pelletizing operation are presented. This paper is primarily concerned with the modelling of: (i) The balling drum operation. A model is outlined which clearly demonstrates the characteristic surging behaviour of the balling circuit. It is used first in a control analysis and, subsequently, in the design and testing of various control schemes. (ii)The grate-kiln-cooler induration process. Models describing each of the constituent processes are outlined and a composite model of the whole induration process presented. The main results from each of these models are discussed.

The term Boulder batholith was first applied in 1897 by W. H. Weed2 to the extensive mass of granite in western Montana within whose borders occur the ore deposits of Butte. In a general way this was known to extend from Helena on the north to the Highland Mountains near Butte on the south, and to be relatively narrow in its east-west diameter. Its intrusive relations to the surrounding sedimentary rocks, and its probable Tertiary age, were described by Weed, but in many ways his statements, based upon incomplete data, have required revision. Most notable of the errors of this description of the batholith were the failure,3 since corrected, to recognize the intrusive contact of the granite with the capping of andesite, and the complete absence of any reference to the many extensions of the granite beyond the somewhat narrow limits of its largest exposure.

We note with sincere regret the death of H. T. Chen,, who was killed by forest fire in the mountainous re-ion of Kokiu-Chang where he had been operating as Engineer in Chief of the Yunnan Tin Trading Co. Mr. Chen graduated in 1911 from the Department, of Mines, .University of California, being the first Chinese Government scholar in mining to attend that institution; and one of the first in America. He came of a distinguished family, many members of Which are in official life in Peking and in his native province of Hunan, all of whom are noted for their classical scholarship. He was himself a Hsiao-tsai or Bachelor of Arts, a coveted degree of the old literati class, Which he won under the Manchu regime when he was still a stripling. His mining work in Yunnan was carried on with only the most primitive facilities and in a distant province, but was, nevertheless, attended with great success and profit for his company. The region is infested with brigands and rebellious troops. who frequently turn marauders and prey upon the countryside, and Mr. Chen has had to go to the mines always with a large armed guard sometimes aggregating 150 men and some hundreds of miners, also armed. Two armed squads of men keep in touch with his base 'at Kokiu-Chang every day to get supplies and food, and it is feared that the brigands who have thus been prevented from plundering and mobbing his parties have started 'he fires to burn him out, with the disastrous result reported. Mr. Chen has thus given his life to his country in the attempt to win for modern China and Chinese civilization the raw materials of her new industrial life. He did so cheerfully and with full appreciation of the dangers that beset him, and China regards this as one of the most noble sacrifices of her young sons on the altar of patriotism. He is survived by a daughter of two years and by his widow who was also a graduate of the University of California and will be remembered by her classmates as Lucy Kong, 1912.
