Many operational problems in mine haulage cannot be solved economically by conventional analytic or trial and error methods. However, a method of probabilistic simulation, which is based on the fundamental assumption that many of the variables governing any physical system are probabilistic, has been adapted to certain areas of operations research in coal mine haulage. This paper attempts to illustrate how simulation can be used in basic haulage research and what kind of results can be expected. Optimization in this case is performed in terms of locomotive and car movement, as well as best utilization of men and equipment, and is approached primarily from the standpoint of scheduling of the main haulage. In many physical cases several probability distributions interact with each other in special ways, and it is not possible to solve for their combined effect in a mathematical equation. This is often true in the case of mine haulage, where such variables as number of empties or loads per trip, travel times, and number of cars or tons produced in a given time are probabilistic. By using a simple example of one secondary haulage segment of a large underground haulage system, this paper attempts to illustrate how simulation can be used in basic haulage research and what kind of results can be expected. Optimization in this case is performed in terms of locomotive and car movement, as well as best utilization of men and equipment. This is the type of preliminary research that will be needed as a first phase in any major haulage study, whether it be a relatively simple economic analysis or a plan for complete automation. We have had occasion to produce wire of Np-237 in small diameters for use in some chemical experiments. Since the mechanical metallurgy of neptunium has not been investigated extensively, it seems desirable to report our successful extrusion technique. Because of the neptunium activity and its attendant health hazard the experimental work was done in glove boxes and related equipment also used for Pu-239. At room temperature a phase neptunium' is a hard (Dph -355) orthorhombic metal of high density (p = 20.45 g per cu cm). a neptunium transforms2 to tetragonal ß neptunium at about 280°C and this in turn transforms to bcc y neptunium at about 577°C. The y phase melts at about 637°C. A temperature of 340° to 345°C was selected for the extrusion, this temperature being a compromise be- tween a possible advantage of working with the presumably more plastic cubic y phase above 577°C and the risk of having the neptunium react with the alloy steel die to form the low-melting Fe-Np eutectic. A 0.75-in.-long, 0.26-in.-diameter ingot of good-purity* Np-237 was extruded by the direct *C = 230 ppm, Pu = 200 ppm, thirty-five metallic elements below limit of detection by spectrographic methods. process through flat-face orifices to form several sizes of wire ranging from 0.010 to 0.030 in. in diameter. Molybdenum disulfide was used as the die lubricant. The extrusion was done in a vacuum of about 10-4 torr to reduce reaction of the neptunium with atmospheric gases. British workers3 at Harwell have extruded neptunium under similar conditions. The force required to extrude 0.010-in.-diameter wire at the rate of 4 in. per min was 6000 lb, as measured with an electrical load cell. Wire 0.020 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4700 lb at a rate of 2 in. per min, and wire 0.030 in. in diameter was extruded with a force of 4000 lb at a rate of 1.3 in. per min. The results of this experimental work have been sufficiently encouraging to suggest a new process based on the principle of simultaneous dissolution and adsorption of gold, applicable to certain ores and tailings that cannot be treated to advantage by countercurrent decantation or filtration. Applications for patents have been filed and The Dorr Company, Inc. has the exclusive right to license the use of the process. The purpose of this paper is to describe such a process, state its possible advantages and immediate field, and give some results obtained on a laboratory scale. Early Experimental Work In the early stages of the experimental work attempts were made to precipitate soluble gold from cyanide solutions with zinc and aluminum in ore pulps followed by flotation of the precipitated gold, but since the results were not promising enough to continue with these precipitants attention was directed to carbon. The first experiments with carbon comprised the addition of cyanide and alkali to the ore pulp, the addition of carbon at or near the end of the dissolving period, and the recovery of the carbon by flotation. With this method of procedure the assumption was made that carbon functioned as a precipitant of gold from cyanide solutions and as such should be added as are other precipitants, including zinc and aluminum; namely, at the end of the dissolution period. The assumption was then made that carbon functioned as an adsorbent, and that if such assumption proved to be correct, it could be added with success to the ore pulp at the time of adding the cyanide. The first experiment along this line was successful in that the feasibility of the dissolution of gold by cyanide and the simultaneous extraction of the dissolved gold by carbon in ore pulps was demonstrated, at least with respect to such treatment on a laboratory scale.

AT the present time, the coal industry is greatly interested in any method or machine that will cut the cost of producing a ton of coal, while at the same time producing a product of quality and grade suitable to the customer. Comparatively new and, as yet, little known, auger mining is proving a profitable method of coal recovery. It may be used for the production of low-cost, high-quality coal with equal success from both the hard-to-mine seams, those with banded impurities and bad roof conditions, and the more easily mined seams as classified according to conventional mining methods. A number of units are now in operation and production information is available that should be of particular interest to coal operators and of general interest to anyone associated with the coal-mining industry. Auger mining refers to coal extraction with large size augers capable of drilling to great depths and having a high capacity. Consideration of the equipment and methods used in drilling an ordinary shot-hole will give a picture of auger mining on a smaller scale. At present, auger mining is used largely for recovery of coal from the highwall after strip mining becomes uneconomical because of the type and the thickness of the overburden which must be moved. Coal augers have many of the advantages of present continuous mining machines, along with many more. The four distinct operations of conventional mining-—cutting, drilling, shooting, and loading— are eliminated and replaced by the combined operation of boring and conveying of the coal. The coal recovery auger is an adaptation of the horizontal rock drill used for drilling shot-holes to shatter and loosen overburden in strip mining operations. During the war the Becker County Sand and Gravel Co. of Summersville, W. Va., experimented with drilling coal with 6 and 9-in. rock augers. The results led to the successive development of the 20, 24, 30 and the 36-in. machines, the latter having appeared in the coal fields within the past six months. THE Institute of Metals Division of this Institute held a joint meeting with the American Foundry- men's Association on Oct. 5-9, at Syracuse, N. Y. The registration at this meeting was about 150. There were four meetings in all, three of which were in con- junction with the American Foundrymen's Association. This combination works out very nicely and gives the I Division a number of practical foundry papers that it would not get otherwise. The sessions were well attended and the discussion was active. The session on Monday morning was of a general nature and consisted of the following subjects : " Refractory Problems in the Non-ferrous Electric Furnace Casting Shop, " "Temperature Control of Non-ferrous Alloys," "Atomized Coal System of Non-ferrous Melting," "Material Handling in a Brass Foundry." On Tuesday morning, the session was on "Aluminum and Its Alloys." The paper on permanent mold castings created a large amount of discussion, in fact so much that it had to be renewed after the close of the regular program. Aluminum is assuming a more important place every year and adds greatly to the program as a whole. One of the most remarkable meetings that this Division has ever had was held on Tuesday at noon in the form of a Round Table discussion, headed by G. K. Elliott, chairman of the Division, Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Elliott divided the members present, numbering about 80, into groups as they were seated at the tables. Each of these groups suggested a topic for discussion. They were as follows : "Fluxes on Market ;" "Simplification of Alloys;" "Pyrometric Control;" "Effect of Gas- sing Metal and Control;" "Barium Sulfate Added to Electric Furnace to Create Slight Oxidation to Remove Aluminum and Silicon;" and" Nickel in Brass."

In order to render my descriptions more intelligible, I have compiled a general map of this section of Alaska, showing accurately the relative positions of the most important districts where valuable deposits of minerals have been discovered (page 819). Upon inspection of this map, it will be observed that the chief metalliferous belt in this mineral field is in close proximity to the mainland shore, the trend of which it follows for more than a hundred miles in a northwest and southeast course, while the mineral croppings on the adjoining islands are much shorter in extent, and more irregular with respect to their strike and continuity. This principal metalliferous zone, which I will call the main-land system of lodes, contains gold, silver and lead, besides traces of copper, zinc and iron, gold being found extensively in a free state and also associated with sulphur, and with many of the sulphides of iron, lead and other substances. On the line of this belt, as shown on the map, there are a number of distinct mineral districts. Beginning at the southerly extremity, they are named as follows: Sumdum, Snettishham, Grindstone Creek, Sheep Creek, Gold Creek, Lemon Creek, Montana Creek and Berners Bay districts, each deriving its name from the hay or creek on which it is situated. Harris mining district, as legally organized under the local customs, rules and regulations adopted by the miners of Juneau, embraces, within its exterior boundaries, Grindstone, Sheep, Gold and Lemon Creeks, and all of Douglas Island. The limits of this immense metalliferous horizon are becoming definitely known through the exposures made by prospectors. The belt, as now recognized, varies in width from one to several miles, the lateral measurement being greatest at Juneau in Harris district, where the famous Treadwell mine, with its slate foot-wall, marks the westerly boundary of the zone, while the eastern side of Silver Bow Basin, with a granite hanging-wall, defines its easterly border.

Factors which influence the success or failure of a waterflood can seldom be determined in the laboratory. For this reason pilot waterfloods are initiated in a repreventative portion of the oil reservoir in question. For a pilot flood to predict quantitatively the recovery to be expected in a field-wide waterflood operation, the pilot area must behave as though it were confined (surrounded by similar areas). In this study, laboratory fluid-flow models were used to determine the simplest pilot pattern, for particular conditions of mobility ratio and initial gas saturation, that would behave as though it were confined. Pilot patterns studied ranged in complexity from a single inverted five-spot to a grouping of nine regular five-spots. Only the innermost producing well in each pattern was studied. Model results showed that the optimum number of wells in the pattern depends upon the oil-water mobility ratio and the expected oil-bank size. Unfavorable mobility ratios will, in general, require more wells in the pilot pattern than will favorable mobility ratios. Pilot patterns in reservoirs which contain a dispersed, flowable, free gas saturation will require fewer wells than for the under-saturated case. The single inverted five-spot pattern was found to be unsatisfactory for predicting behavior of fully developed waterfloods. In particular, it is possible that, in reservoirs which contain a flowable, dispersed gas phase, the oil bank will never be observed at the producers due to the large amounts of free gas which continue to be produced with the oil. INTRODUCTION One method which has been used to predict the performance of a waterflood is the pilot flood. The pilot waterflood is a flood which involves only a small cluster of the reservoir wells and is located in a small, representative portion of the reservoir. The object is that oil produced from the pilot can, in some way, be related to the oil recovery to be expected from a field-wide expansion of the waterflood. However, these field pilot waterfloods have often been unreliable in the prediction of oil recovery in a fully developed waterflood. This unreliability has also been demonstrated in several laboratory studies of pilot floods. Some of the investigators have shown that there are situations in which the pilot flood oil production is far too optimistic with respect to the oil recovery in the fully de- veloped flood. Others4-G have shown that the pilot results can also be pessimistic, especially if the pilot waterflood is initiated in an oil reservoir which has been depleted by primary recovery and is at very low pressure. The major reason for this unreliability of pilot water-floods is the migration of fluids into or out of the pilot area. By the well-known method of images, if straight lines can be drawn to represent vertical planes of symmetry in a porous medium which contains pressure sources and sinks (injectors and producers), then these lines are invariant streamlines, or lines across which there is no potential gradient, and therefore no flow. In an actual reservoir, these lines of symmetry can never be established exactly because of reservoir inhomogeneities and irregular reservoir boundaries. However, if the reservoir is relatively large and contains wells in repetitive patterns, these lines of symmetry are commonly assumed to exist for the pattern units sufficiently far removed from the reservoir boundary. Lines of symmetry for the five-spot injection pattern are shown in Fig. 1. Each five-spot unit in this figure can be considered confined with respect to flow across its boundary. In pilot floods this is not the case. The lines of symmetry for the pilot patterns investigated in this study are shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that the fluid within these pilots is not confined and is therefore able to migrate into or out of the pilot area. Intuitively, one can see that, if more wells are added to the pilot, the innermost unit tends to behave more and more like the confined pattern. However, there is a practical limit to the number of wells which should be placed in the pilot. This limit is usually determined by economic factors. It was the purpose of this study to use laboratory fluid-flow models to determine which of the previously mentioned pilot patterns will force the innermost producing well to behave as it would in a fully developed waterflood. Since fluid migration is influenced by initial saturation conditions and the mobility ratio, these factors were included in the study. The ultimate objective of this study was to develop data which would allow the operator to choose a pilot pattern and operating conditions that will yield a production history which can be applied directly as an estimate of the performance of each production well of the fully developed waterflood. BASIS FOR THE STUDY The basic problem of field pilot floods is the migration of the reservoir fluids into or out of the pilot area. This problem has been the subject of previously reported model studies on pilot floods. These studies have been concerned mainly with the development of arbitrary "correction factors" to be applied to the simple, unconfined pilot systems such as the single five-spot. Copper oxide ore may be leached at all sizes from run-of-mine down to pulp, and consideration must be given to all available methods in determining the most economical one. Heap leaching was evaluated in a pilot plant at Gaspe Copper Mines, Ltd. which was designed to simultaneously leach two 1200-ton dumps of ore. The plant was operated for two years, in part under severe winter conditions. Two modes of leaching were investigated: acid leaching in which sulfuric acid was added externally to the leach solution, and pyritic leaching in which pyrite concentrate was added to the dump and acid was generated in situ by bacterial action. The pilot plant operation is described, and the results are compared with laboratory data obtained in 6-in.-diam columns. It is concluded that pyritic leaching offers certain operating advantages over acid leaching when copper is recovered by cementation in that iron buildup in the solution is prevented.

Introduction The variations in crushing plant design seen during the past 30 years provide a valuable source of information and experience from which one can select the optimum arrangement for a specific requirement. The purpose of this paper is to examine some specific equipment configurations as they relate to operating efficiency, plant availability and final product size in the form of mill feed. Due to the varied ore properties, physical space limitations, size of ore body and financial resources, there is no single crushing or grinding flowsheet that is best. Since energy costs have risen dramatically during the recent past, it became obvious that significant savings are possible by selecting equipment and a circuit which offers low power requirements balanced with low wear metal and installed equipment costs. Relatively clear and measurable are the metal and maintenance costs and the ever increasing cost of energy. Metal costs in the form of crusher liners have not quite doubled in the last 20 years, while power costs have increased by a factor of four or five, depending on the region considered. Estimates made only a few years ago on the increased cost of energy are obsolete in view of the recent unstable conditions. Since power is therefore becoming the largest cost area, it behooves us to investigate potential cost saving methods in the form of lowering the KWH/Ton of crude. Crushing To reduce run-of-mine to mill feed requires reduction in a series of stages. The physical size and power requirements of a crusher capable of reducing hard rock vary depending on the application. Extended experience in most crushing plants show that a minus 19MM (3/4 in.) rod mill feed can be and is being produced in three stages of crushing. In the majority of cases, the last crushing stage is closed circuited using anywhere from 19MM (3/4 in.) to 14MM (9/16 in.) slotted openings on the sizing deck. In some copper concentrators, the mill feed is all passing 13MM (1/2 in.) using three stages of crushing and 14MM (9/16 in.) square openings on the closed circuit screens. It was felt by some that crushing to this fine size is only possible if the ore is friable and is relatively soft in comparison to the harder ores. SIR ROBERT HADFIELD, London, England (written discussion*).-We have in the past known so little about tungsten that an important paper such as Mr. Zay Jeffries contributes is most welcome. I have not much personal knowledge on the subject except as regards combinations of iron with tungsten. I put forward the results of my research on natural alloys in 1903,1 and so far as I know the facts there presented still stand. Singular to say, tungsten added to iron affects the electrical resistance less than any other added element. The following tables taken from research work by myself and Sir William Barrett may be of interest.

A key point in the design and operation of a modern mining operation is the construction of what is called an ore-body model or block model. This model is a representation of reality constructed from predicted information. The blocks involved are merely subsets of the overall model which allows manipulation of the contained information on a local scale. In general, block models enable mine planners to effectively select the most promising means of extracting the ore both physically and economically. The uses of a block model can be quite diversified, but one must realize that a single model that satisfies all curiosities and forms of expertise is difficult to construct.

THE Federated American Engineering Societies through its Executive Board has endorsed House Bill 5230, introduced April 26, 1921, which provides for- the completion of the topographical survey of the United States. Before this bill can be reported out it will be necessary for the House Committee on -interstate and foreign commerce to hold hearings. This will not be done unless the engineers of the country show interest -and demand action which should be taken immediately after the recess ends and Congress reconvenes this fall. Surveys and maps have been made in this country ever since Captain John Smith mapped Chesapeake Bay about. 300 years ago, but it is only in comparatively recent years that the need for accurate maps has been keenly felt by those engaged in the industrial' and commercial development of the country.

The early history of coal in West Virginia is all included with that of Virginia in the few records available but for present-day readers it is much more convenient that the account of this area prior to the Civil War be grouped with that since then. West Virginia shares with Maryland in the first record of coal noted in the Appalachian fields. This was along the upper Potomac River, in the fall of 1736, and the data about it are given under Maryland, as most' of the development of the area was in that state. The next record of coal was left by John Peter Salley in his account of the expedition he made with Howard and others in 1742. (See p. 17.) The next reference found is that of Dr. Thomas Walker, in 1750, when he passed through the Pocahontas coal field. This has been described on page 18. Six years later, in March 1756, Capt. William Preston, who was with Major Lewis in his expedition down Big Sandy River, wrote in his journal: "Tuesday 2.... Moved down the branch and- came to the main creek where we camped. Put on half rations. Came into the Cole land; crossed the river 8 times."1 The party crossed from the head of Clinch River to Horse Pen Creek, then to Jacob's Fork and down it to Dry Fork of Tug River; the coal was seen in what is now McDowell County. The early settlers must have known of the presence of the great Pittsburgh bed in the northern part of the state, both along the Monongahela River and elsewhere, because the outcrops could easily be seen along streams in many. places. The report of the Commissioners for Adjusting Claims to Unpatented Lands, made in 1789, contains several references to coal in the names of streams, made years earlier. The earliest is one for 1,000 acres to James Walker, in Monongalia County, "adjoining his settlement on a branch of the right hand fork of Pappaw known by the name of the Stone Cole Lick made in the year 1773."2 Another of 400 acres in the same locality was settled upon in 1777.2 A third spoke of a tract "on the left hand fork of Stone Cole about three miles from the mouth," in 1783.1 Monongalia County then covered all of the northern

EVER since the first installation of wet-washing methods of coal preparation, the removal of the water added by the washing process has created serious technical and operating problems. The rapid development and widespread adoption of wet washing has necessitated a corresponding development of dewatering methods and equipment. The amount of water retained by coal varies with the size of the coal. The moisture that is largely on the surface of the particles is easily shaken off coarse coal; thus coarse coal can be dried comparatively easily and quickly. Fine coal presents a larger surface area than does coarse coal, so its capacity for retaining moisture is greater. In fine coal, moisture below about 5 per cent is held between the coal particles and its removal is difficult. Draining and drying of the finer sizes is a major problem at many washeries. Two common problems of coal-washing practice that are intimately connected with dewatering and drying are the clarification of washery water and the prevention of stream pollution. The first field has been studied from many angles, including the use of coagulating and settling agents followed by vacuum filters to remove the solids, and the use of sludge tanks with dewatering screens incorporated therein. In many districts, the disposal of sludges into streams has been stopped by law. The lack of space for impounding sludges has created problems of disposal in other districts. Reduction in moisture means a saving in freight costs as well as the elimination of difficulties in unloading and storing. Excess moisture in coal causes it to freeze in localities where severe climatic conditions prevail. Excess water in coals to be used in the production of coke and manufactured gas has a chilling effect on the walls of the oven or retort. Dryness of coal is important in producing good briquettes. Charles T. Malcolmson, Chicago, Ill.:—Mr. Blauvelt's admirable paper is a valuable contribution to the literature on briquetting of coal in this country. It should have a special significance for those interested in the commercial development of the coal-briquette industry. I believe that the data included in Mr. Blauvelt's paper will be particularly useful because they represent costs taken from a briquette-plant in actual operation. There are several points touched on in Mr. Blauvelt's paper which may bear comment in the way of emphasis rather than of criticism. IN 1839,1 Gerard, Troost, the first, State Geologist of Tennessee, reported the occurrence of zinc ores in East Tennessee, in connection with the iron ores at Embreeville; in 1844,2 he refers to the zinc deposits of East Tennessee, especially the apparently rich deposits occurring, in Jefferson and Claiborne Counties, while his ninth annual report is a ,description of the zinc deposits of Jefferson County and a description of the most improved processes by which zinc is extracted from its ores. Although. Tennessee has long known of the occurrence of its zinc deposits and has recognized their value, only during the last few years have these ores been successfully worked. As far as can be learned, prior to the systematic development of the Mascot district in 1911, no large-scale or successful operation of any of the zinc deposits was carried on. But in that year, after several companies had made considerable progress in developing the Mascot area and had proved. a relatively extensive body of low-grade sulfide ore, the American Zinc Co. entered the field. It introduced modern methods of prospecting and mining the ore and from the first was successful. Too great credit cannot be given this company for its pioneer work in a previously unimportant field. Throughout the history of its operations, the American Zinc Co. has confined its efforts to underground mining of the sulfide ore, sphalerite. This company has found that successful results in zinc mining in East Tennessee can be achieved only by expending large sums in prospecting and blocking out bodies of pay ore in sufficient magnitude for large-scale operations. At Mascot are located the mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee, the mines being situated along the Southern Railway in the Holston River Valley, Knox County, about 13 miles northeast of Knoxville. Considerable mining and prospecting had been done by several companies prior to the acquisition of this property by the, American Zinc Co.
