A study of the relationship between undercooling for nucleation and structure in Sn-Cu alloys with 0.1 to 5 pct Cu has shown that in hypereutectic allojls the halo of tin that surrounds the primary crystals of Cu3Sn5 is larger, the larger the undercooling for nucleation o,f the tin. This increase of halo size results in a decrease of coupled eutectic, and, in alloys far from the eulectic composition, may produce its complete disappeavance, with the formation of a divorced eutectic structure. This was confirnred by the excrrnination of other alloys in which divorced eutectic slructuves are formed, and leads to the conclusion that they ave only an extrenle case of halo forrtzalion , which results when the two phases freeze one at a time and solidification of the first is completed Defove the second starts. It was also found that under proper conditions of nucleation all types of eutectic structures can be formed in the sartte system , and therefore divorced eutectics, like normal and anomalous, are not characteristic of the syslett~, but are mainly controlled by nucleatiorz. Dizlovced eutectics are formed when the phase that tutcleates the eulectic vequires a large undevcooling for ils nucleation and when the cotnpositiorz of the alloy is far from the eutectic., on the side of the primary phase that does not nucleate the other phase. It is recommended that the tevm "divorced" be used in preference to degenerate because it is more desct-iptice of the morphology and mode of forinalion of the structures. ThE variety of structures found in eutectic alloys has been extensively investigated and classified. The most accepted classification is the one by ~cheil,' in which three different types of eutectic were distinguished: 1) normal, 2) anomalous, 3) degenerate (divorced). ATornlal eutectics are typified by the simultaneous growth of the two phases ("coupling") by which the two phases appear as interpenetrating crystals. The presence of a crystallization front, in which the two phases grow side by side, creates the eutectic grains, with the boundaries where the fronts meet. The presence of eutectic grains is the .distinguishing feature of a normal eutectic, according to Scheil. Straumanis and Brakss2 examined the Cd-Zn system and showed that there was a crystallographic relationship between the phases. Later, others4 also investigated additional systems and found definite crystallographic relationships in the coupled eutectics. The anornalous eutectic shows much less coupling than the normal; the two phases are intimately mixed but 'grow without a uniform crystallization front—a consistent crystallographic relationship— and the eutectic grain is conspicuously absent. As in the normal eutectics faster rates of growth result in a finer structure, but there is not the typical uniform spacing of normal eutectics. The degenerate eutectic shows no coupling; in fact the two phases attempt to minimize their area of contact and to form separate crystals. It has been suggested5" that slow cooling may favor this type of structure. Scheil believes that normal eutectics are formed when the two solid phases are present in more or less equal proportions, whereas both anomalous and degenerate eutectics form when one of the phases is present only in small amounts. spengler7 extended much farther this qualitative relationship between the eutectic type and the ratio of the two phases, and added a relationship to the melting point of the constituents. On this basis he proposed two equations for determining into which of Scheil's classifications an alloy belongs. The first equation is: where TI is the melting temperature of the lower-melting component, Tp of the higher-melting component, and Te the eutectic temperature. The second equations is: where is the volume percent of the lower-melting phase and $2 of the higher-melting phase at the eutectic composition. If 0 and/or 4 are in the range 0.1 to 1, a normal eutectic is formed; if in the range 0.01 to 0.1, anomalous; if less than 0.01, degenerate. Although the examples given by Spengler show a good agreement with the formulas, chadwick found that the Zn-Sn eutectic is normal to all growth rates, even though the volume ratio is 12/1, and Davies9 reports that the A1-AlgCo2 eutectic is normal, with a volume ratio of more than 30/1. Many more discrepancies of this type can also be found. Neither Scheil nor most of the other investigators have considered nucleation as a factor in the formation of divorced eutectics. The year 1939 in Kansas, with a production of 57,944,300 bbl. from 19,669 wells, shows a slight recession from the peak of oil production reached the previous year, when slightly over 59,000,000 bbl. of oil was marketed. The previous peak had been reached in 1917 with 45,451,000 bbl. marketed. Another still earlier peak had been reached in 1904, when slightly less than 5,000,000 bbl. was produced and sold. The production of gas probably reached a new peak during 1939 with a total of over 69 billion cubic feet. Between the peak of the year 1908, when over 80 billion cu. ft. was produced, and that of 1939 the production dropped to 16 billion cu. ft., in the year 1921. During the year 1458 wells were drilled. This figure is somewhat lower than that given in several trade journals, because it does not include wells that were deepened or recompleted in a different geological horizon. Nearly 75 per cent (1029) of the total number of wells were completed as commercial oil wells (824 in western and 205 in eastern Kansas). The commercial gas wells completed number 71, of which 24 are in eastern Kansas and 47 in western Kansas. The remaining completions include 154 dry holes in eastern and 204 dry holes in western Kansas. Based on daily potential capacity the new discoveries of the year accounted for a cumulative initial production of 264,000 bbl. in eastern and 1,158,827 bbl. in western Kansas. It is interesting in this connection to note that the number of wells completed in the state rose gradually to a first peak in 1904, when 2782 were drilled. The number dropped off rapidly to 368 three years later, but rose to the second and highest peak in 1918, when 4671 wells were completed. In the period between 1904 and 1912 more gas wells than oil wells were completed. Between the high peak of 1918 and the somewhat lower peak of 1937, the low point was reached during 1931 with the completion of only 470 wells. In the matter of new pools discovered, Kansas again ranks high. The exact number depends somewhat upon the interpretation of a "new" area—whether it should be called a new pool or a long extension of an older pool. INTRODUCTION The United States has an abundance of coal reserves in thick seams. Most of these resources are in the West. Surface mining operations in thick seams are highly efficient, particularly in the West, but methods for mining thick seams underground are very limited. The percentage of resource recovery in deep mining of thick seams is often as low as 30 percent. It is estimated that there are 45 billion tons of coal reserves for underground mining in seams greater than 10-ft thick in the western states alone. With such a large available reserve base and low rates of recovery, the need to develop the technology to mine these thick reserves is quite evident. As the definition of a thick seam varies widely from country to country, a thick seam is defined here as any seam where the height is such that it is not minable in a single pass with available mining equipment.

Triaxial compression tests have been performed to determine the strength characteristics of limestone, sand-stone and shale rocks subjected to controlled stress conditions. This control tuns exercised by varying the liquid pressures within and around a plastic-encased rock specimen. The pressure in the pores of the rock was varied throughout the range from atmospheric to 15,000 psig; the external pressure was changed over the same range with various positive pressure differences between is and the intertnal pressure. The data show that the rock strength increased and the mode of failure changed as the pressuire. surrounding the rock became greater than the pressure in the pores of the rock. These observations and the resu1ts of microbit drilling experiments indicate that the increased rock strength under pressure may bc an important effect in reducing drilling rare, but that other factors are probably of even greater importance. INTRODUCTION A large part of the research conductcd to reducc thc cost of drilling is directed toward improving present drilling technology and dcveloping new drilling methods. In spite of the fact that drilling is essentiaIly the act of making rocks fail, many details of the mechanism of failure are not known. It seems probable, therefore, that continuing studies of the fundamentals of rock failure can lay a foundation for future improvements in drilling technology. One of the factors which affects rock failure is the stress applied to the rock. This effect has been known for many years.'.'.; As an example, stress studics have been published by engineers' concerned with the strength characteristics of concrete in large dams. More recently, a number of investigators4-12 have explored the effects of stress on the strength of geologic formations and the geologic implications of their findings. During the last few years some research'" on rock strengths has also been conductcd in an attempt to gain additional insight into the factors which affeet rock drillability. In detcrmining the strength characteristics of rocks under different stress conditions, investigators have conventionally used triaxial compression equipment. wherein a jacketed rock cylinder is uniformly loaded from all directions and then compressed longitudinally. The results of this work have demonstrated that the mode of failure (brittle or malleable) is dependent upon the loading pressure, and that the strength of the rock increases as the loading pressure increases. These results clearly manifest that the stress, which is determined by the loading pressure, affects rock strength, and this implies that rocks under stress should be stronger and hence harder to drill. During the drilling of a porous rock the stress conditions are determined not only by the pressure surrounding the portion of the rock undergoing failure (confining pressure) but also by the pressure of the interstitial fluids within the rock (pore pressure). The importancc of both these pressures on the drilling rate of rocks has already been demonstrated by a number of investigators. Murray and Cunningham" found in microbit drilling expcriments that at constant pore pressures the drilling ratc decreased as the hydrostatic pressure surrounding an unjacketed, impermeable rock increased. Later Eckel" found that for jacketed Iimestone specimens the differcnce between hydrostatic (wellbore) pressure and formation (pore) pressure had an important effect on drilling rate. These observations of the effect of pressure on drilling rate emphasize that for drilling studies triaxial compression tests should be conducted under conditions of confining and pore pressure which simulate conditions underground. In the past, triaxial tests have been made under conditions which do not reproduce those underground. In particular, most of the tests on porous materials have keen made at varying confining pressures but with atmospheric pore pressures. In only one group of tests' was any data on the effect of pore pressurc reported, and these few data were on materials not representiltive of those encountered in drilling earth formations. The research described herein was initiated to deter-mine the importance of both internal pore pressure and confining pressure on failure characteristics of limestone. sandstone and shales. Triaxial loading equipment was used to obtain strength data at pressures up to 15,000 psig. An additional objective of this research was to apply these results to drilling rate studies by comparing them with the previously published drilling data of Murray and Cunningham" and of Eckel12. The work reported here is but one step in determining and evaluating the fundamental mechanisms which control drilling rate. FOR nearly a century, the Corocoro deposit has been renowned among geologists from the fact that it shares with the Lake Superior deposits of the United States the distinction of being the only important copper districts where native copper is worked commercially. The Corocoro district, named after the city of Corocoro, the capital of the Province of Pacajes (Department of La Paz, Bolivia) is situated towards the western edge of the Bolivian high plateau, at an altitude of a little over 13,000 ft. The most interesting part of the district is that immediately surrounding the city of Corocoro, at a distance, by railway, of 65 miles from La Paz and 210 miles to the Chilean port of Arica on the Pacific Coast. The climate of the region is that of the semi-desert, dry and relatively cold, with big differences of temperature between day and night. The rainy season begins in December and ends in March. The cupriferous lodes of Corocoro have not attracted as much interest as the silver mines of Potosi but they have been known for a long time. In the precolonial period the Indians were using the charquis, or natural native copper sheets, to make small brass objects, and the beautiful pale green brochantite of the outcrops as a source of green pigments. During the colonial period, the oxidized ores of the outcrops were worked for copper, which was used by the mint at Potosi for making currency. The native copper ores were neglected because the Spanish miners were at a loss how to concentrate and smelt them. About 1830, work by rudimentary processes, which were improved little by little, was begun on the native copper ores. The total production of native copper in the following hundred years amounted to 100,000 tons. This native copper, which was remarkably pure, was much appreciated on the European markets before the introduction of electrolytic copper. It was useful for making special ornamental brass or bronze and the granular concentrates of native copper, called barrilla, containing 80 to 85 per cent copper were suitable for making copper sulfate by direct oxidation and subsequent leaching with sulfuric acid.

The Ti-Pb diagram was investigated in the region 0 to 58 pct Pb and from 500°C to liquidus temperatures. Three reactions were encountered: I—ß?a+Ti Pb at 725 10°C; 2—ß+L?Ti4Pb at 1305+ 10°C; and 3—the possible eutectic L-+Ti,Pb and y between 1200" and 1300°C. LEAD-RICH alloys have been investigated by Nowotny and Pesl,' who used sintered compacts and studied the region from 37.5 to 100 pct Pb by X-ray diffraction analysis. The only phase found in addition to titanium and lead was the hexagonal compound Ti Pb. Alloy systems of lead with metals of the transition group, such as iron, chromium, tungsten, cobalt, nickel, or manganese, generally show little liquid or solid solubility.' Craighead et al.,3 however, indicated that lead is soluble in a and ß titanium to at least 2.1 pct. They also found that approximately 50 pct of the lead added was lost during the arc-melting of Ti-Pb alloys. In the present investigation, are-melting also was used to prepare Ti-Pb alloys and similarly large lead losses were encountered. Experimental Procedure Alloy Preparation: Considerable difficulty was encountered in the melting of the Ti-Pb alloys and a number of experiments were performed before the method described was developed. Alternate layers of lead and titanium were wrapped with titanium sheet and compacted. This "sandwich" was annealed at 300" to 350 °C and was melted according to the procedure described by Cadoff and Nielsen.' Using a low current, 150 amp, and an argon atmosphere, four to eight 10 to 20 sec melts were made on each alloy, with the button being turned over between each melt to insure homogeneity. In the high lead range, the preliminary sintering was found to be of doubtful value and was eliminated. In the region above the nominal composition of 70 wt pct Pb, the alloys prepared in this manner always consolidated into two phases. The outside appeared to be composed entirely of lead and the inside was a Ti-Pb alloy. In order to determine whether this phenomenon was caused by a miscibility gap, master alloys with a nominal composition of 40 wt pct Pb were machined and mixed with various percentages of lead sheet. This mixture was compacted and melted in the same manner as the other alloys. Although these alloys were not homogeneous, they did not show the layering that was observed

The word asbestos is a broad term that has been accepted and applied to a number of fibrous mineral silicates found in nature. They are incombustible and can be separated by mechanical means into fibers of various lengths and thicknesses, but differ in chemical composition and other properties. It is generally recognized that there are six varieties of asbestos; the finely fibrous form of serpentine known as chrysotile, and five minerals of the amphibole group, i.e., amosite (not fully recognized as a mineral species name but accepted in asbestos terminology), anthophyllite, crocidolite, tremolite and actinolite. (Figs 1-4.) Physical and Other Properties The structures of asbestos fibers have been studied intensely in recent years. X-ray diffraction patterns 1 to 15 have been used as a means of identification and classification. The amphibole group structures have been fairly well established while the serpentine group has been the subject of many investigations during the past six years. Low-angle X-ray scattering techniques5 have shown that the chrysotile fibrils are "hexagonally close packed" and parallel to each other, having cross-sectional diameters varying from 180Å* units to 300Å units, while the amphibole fibers are many times larger in cross section. The electron micrographs of chrysotile asbestos (Figs 1-4) have also indicated that the fibrils might be in the form of a hollow tube. This point has been the subject of considerable controversy by a number of investigators.7 to 16 Density measurements17 made on a sample of high quality Arizona fiber did not indicate that the fiber had a hollow tube structure; however, the so-called "sheet structure" of the fibril could be distorted in such a way that it gives the appearance of a hollow tube in the electron microscope. It is of interest to quote one investigator, F. L. Pundsack,17 in this connection: Although the empirical composition of chrysotile is 3MgO.2SiO2.2H20, the true unit cell[#] composition is best represented as Mg12(OH)16Si8O20. This cell has dimensions of a= 5.3Å, b = 9.2 Å, and c = 14.6 Å where the "a" direction is the fiber axis. The calculated density of this unit is 2.56 g/cc, a value in close agreement with experimentally determined density values for chrysotile. IN concentration of certain ores by soap flotation, prevention of quartz flotation is desired; the contrary is true in treatment of some oxide iron ores. Experimental study of the flotation of quartz goes back at least a quarter of a century.' Clean quartz does not float with fatty acids or soaps but does float when activated by one of many metallic salts. Control of pH is important. Broadly speaking the problem of quartz flotation has been approached from the empirical side, as was the related topic of flocculation or dispersion of quartz suspensions? Empirical studies indicated the existence of critical relationships between the additions of collector and activator. These additions were not stoichiometric for the formation of soaps of the activator cation. For example, Gaudin and Rizo-Patrona found optimum quartz flotation at pH 10.6 using barium activation and oleate collection when the molar ratio of oleate to barium was 1 to 1 instead of 2 to 1, as would be called for formation of Ba(OL),. Cooke and Digre" ' found that if calcium is the activator, a minimum quantity of that agent is required for effective flotation when the pH is 11.5. In other words, if the concentration of Na' exceeds 10 -2.5 mols per liter or if the concentration of H exceeds 10-11 mols per liter, the concentration of Ca++ in solution required for quartz activation is increased. This suggests that H+ is much more effective than Na+ on 10-2.5 quartz, perhaps in the ratio ofp or 108. Schuh- mann and Prakash6 studied anew the activation of quartz by barium, calcium, aluminum, and ferric iron. Salts of these metals are activators provided they are in stoichiometric excess over the collector used with them. Alkaline-earth salts are effective only in alkaline circuits. Important as they are in giving data on the effect of various agents on quartz, all these studies fail to give information on the detailed structure of the quartz-solution interface. A beginning in this direction was made by Gaudin and Chang,? who measured the adsorption of radioactively marked barium and laurate ions at quartz surfaces, and by Gaudin. Spedden, and Laxen,8 ho measured the adsorption of radioactively marked sodium at quartz surfaces. Work has also been done by Bell0 n measurement of the adsorption of sodium ion and chloride ion at quartz-solution interfaces. In all these experimental measurements of adsorption, the solid was centrifuged or filtered from the bulk of the liquor with which it had been associated; and the composition of the solid surface was ascertained by analysis, after allowance was made for the ionic composition of the liquor included with the centrifuged solids on the assumption that it is identical to the bulk liquid. Adsorption measurements give only the total amount of collector adsorbed at the quartz-solution interface; they give no indication of the distribution of these adsorbed ions at the interfacial layer. It is the ionic structure of the solid-solution interface and its importance to flotation that is the subject of this paper. The structure of this interfacial layer can be investigated by means of electrokinetic methods so that by combining electrokinetic studies with adsorption measurements, a more complete picture of the quartz surface may be obtained. ELECTRICAL investigations carried out in regions containing sedimen-tary rocks showed that sediments generally are good electrical conductors, a fact which at the present time is used for structural investigations by electrical methods. It is of fundamental importance, not only for these investigations but also for electrical prospecting in general, to know the electrical properties of various soils and rocks. It will be useful, there-fore, to discuss this question with the hope that the general points of view discussed in this paper will perhaps be, completed by further observations and determinations of material from various localities. This paper is based principally on the study of literature, and the purpose is primarily a discussion of the main factors that determine the electrical conductivity of soils and rocks. It will follow, however, that the factors discussed here also frequently decide how far a certain orebody can be regarded as a good electrical conductor compared with the sur-rounding rocks. All-rocks are more or less porous; and the pores are filled with liquids and gases. Their electrical conductivity, therefore, depends on the following factors: 1. The electrical conductivity of minerals composing the rock. 2. Electrical conductivity of the liquid filling the pores. 3. Proportion of the volume of liquid filling pores of the rocks to the solid rock material. 4. Shape of the pores. 5. Arrangement of the particles of gas and liquids. 6. Temperature. Dry minerals, with the exception of certain ore minerals, are complete nonconductors from the point of view of applied geophysics; in the present investigation we deal with rocks which have no conducting minerals, and factor 1, therefore, is not important. The same is true of soils. The liquids contained in soils and rocks in most cases are waters, some-times oil. As oil is a nonconductor of electricity, the impregnating waters will determine the electrical conductivity of soils and rocks.

Significant technologic advances were made in open pit mining during 1973. The industry faced mounting problems on one front where expansion of stripping activities encountered enlarged public resistance and on another where manpower and materials were in short supply. These challenges, along with the challenge and opportunity to meet the increased demand for mining products including materials for energy production, placed a premium on technical developments and their application. The demands on technology also included the providing of facilities and methods to economically extract minerals from deposits of lower grade, lesser accessibility, and where other uses of land approached the value of its minerals. Detection of Failures in Slope Walls The Bureau of Mines has undertaken research directed towards providing a mine operator with the opportunity to take corrective action before a potential slide becomes a problem.

This paper presents some high-temperature properties of copper-zirconium conductor alloy compared to copper-chromium alloy. Definite superiority of the copper -zirconium alloy over the copper-chromium alloy at high temperatures is shown. RECENT investigations have shown that cold-worked copper-zirconium alloy possesses good room-temperature strength, ductility, and conductivity and maintains most of its strength at temperatures up to 450°C (840°F). As a result, this alloy is now used for many applications, such as commutator segments, resistant welding wheels and tips, rectifier bases, electrical contacts, and so forth. Early investigations1-3 have shown that the maximum solid solubility of zirconium in copper is close to 0.15 pct and the alloy containing Cu-0.10-0.15 pct Zr exhibits the optimum mechanical and physical properties. Results2 have also shown that the alloy has better elevated temperature strength and ductility than copper-chromium and copper-silver alloys. The present investigation was undertaken to learn more about the elevated temperature properties of copper-zirconium alloy and to compare these properties with those of the copper-chromium alloy. WORK PROCEDURE The commercial copper-zirconium alloy, Amzirc was selected for this investigation. Because this alloy is composed of oxygen-free high-conductivity copper and 0.10-0.15 pct Zr, it was believed that possible disturbance from impurities would thus be negligible. Copper-chromium alloys used in this investigation contained 0.40 and 0.70 pct Cr and balance copper. The Cu-0.40 pct Cr alloy was a commercial brand, whereas the Cu-0.70 pct Cr alloy was made from OFHC copper and Cu-5 pct Cr master alloy. It was made in a graphite crucible under argon gas cover and cast. In the preparation of specimens, all three alloys were treated to give the optimum properties; thus the Cu-0.15 pct Zr alloy was solution annealed at different temperatures to determine the desirable solution annealing temperature. It was then cold worked and aged at 375" to 400°C (705" to 750" F). A solution annealing temperature of 1000°C (1830°F) was selected for the copper-chromium alloys because this temperature is widely used in commercial practice. The same alloy was aged at 450°C (840°F) after solution annealing and cold working. It was found that the maximum precipitation hardening of the copper-chromium alloy occurred at this temperature. When aged after solution annealing, the aging temperature was 500°C (930"F) for both alloys. The following properties were determined: 1) Tensile properties as a function of temperature. 2) Effect of solution annealing temperature on high-temperature tensile properties. 3) Stress to rupture strength at 350° and 400°C (660"to750°F). 4) Impact strength. 5) Electrical conductivity and resistivity as function of temperature. 6) Thermal expansion.

Dick Hunt is known for having said, "Ore bodies are found but mines are made." This was certainly true of the Ertsberg-it was stumbled upon, literally, by a group of mountain climbers, but to develop it into a mine took 12 years of concerted effort. For more than a century, explorers had attempted to penetrate the jungles of New Guinea and climb the snow-covered Mt. Carstensz, named for a Dutch navigator who first saw it in 1620. But the first to succeed was the Colijn expedition which reached the 5030-m (16,500-ft) pinnacle in December 1936 after starting out from the south coast57 days earlier. Members of that expedition were A. H. Colijn and Jean Jacques Dozy, employees of Shell Oil Co., and Lt. Wissel, a pilot in the Royal Dutch Navy.

Falconbridge Nickel, the one-time subsidiary that grew up to swallow its own parent, Ventures Limited, in 1962, is not about to be left behind by rising nickel consumption. At a cost of several hundred million dollars, this Canadian firm has undertaken a series of new projects that will not only ensure its present share of the market, but also lead it into new areas of the nickel business. Although Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. was not formed until 1928, it actually had its start in 1917- 18 with the discovery of a large, good grade nickel- copper deposit in Falconbridge, near Sudbury, Ontario. However, due to several factors, financing could not be obtained and the orebody lay fallow. It was not until 1928, when the Thayer Lindsley interests bought the property from the original owner, that it was developed.

A spectrochemical method of slag analysis is descibed which utilizes fusion of the sample with a flux, then cooling and crushing to put all samples into a common form. The powder, is then fed onto adhesive tape and passed through a spark by means of a special device to provide very reproducible discharge conditions. Combined with a direct-reading optical emission instrument, this system provides speed and accuracy of antilysis heretofore unobtainable for. slag samples by any other method. THERE are many suggested methods for spectro-chemical analysis of slags. The most important are fusion-pellet methods and solution methods. In our company the fusion-pellet method has been used earlier, and is described by Lounamaa. W. H. Tingle and C. K. Matocha have made refinements of the pellet method.' A Committee of the British Iron and Steel Research Association has investigated different methods of spectrochemical analysis of slags. Its purpose was to formulate a method which would give the complete analysis in 30 min with an accuracy of ±3 pct. The committee recommends a solution technique, which was thought to correspond best to their requirements. The method to be described is a fusion-tape method. The sample is isoformed by fusion and grinding. The powder is analyzed with the tape technique. The tape machine and some of its applications are described earlier.4'5 The powder to be analyzed is continuously fed onto a moving adhesive tape, which passes through the spark gap. The sparks break through the tape and vaporize and excite the material to be analyzed. The most outstanding feature of the tape machine is its very high reproducibility. The concept of isoformation has been introduced earlier.= It means a pretreatment of the samples to make them uniform from the spectralanalytical point of view, i.e., cancelling systematic differences between the samples. The purpose of the isoformation is to reduce the influence of particle size, as well as chemical and mineral composition. Before describing the isoformation by fusion plus grinding, which is the purpose of this paper, a few words will be said about two other types of isoformations, i.e., grinding with buffer and ion exchange plus grinding as they have been considered during the application of the tape technique for slag analysis. Grinding with buffer might be a sufficient isoformation in some special cases, where the mineral composition is defined. The time of grinding must, however, be rather long, at least 5 to 10 min, even when using such an efficient mill as the Swing Mill from Messrs. Siebtechnik, Mühlheim, Germany. This type of isoformation is not recommended due to its limitations and due to the fact that the gain in time compared with the fusion technique is almost negligible. The principle of ion exchange plus grinding and some of its applications have been described.5 The following elements of interest in slag analysis can be determined in this way: Na, K, Cu, Mg, Ca, Ba, Zn, Pb, Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni. The very important element Si, however, cannot be analyzed with this method. Although the ion exchange isoformation for slag analysis cannot be looked upon as a routine method, it can be used for

THE history of the development of the strip in- dustry, mentioned in this paper, was covered in considerable detail by Stephen Badlam in his paper presented. before the American Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in New York last October. The description of progress in rolling strip there out-lined will be found good reading by anyone interested in the subject. Quoting from Mr. Badlam's paper, "For practically thirty years, we find no record of the use of the backing-roll principle, until in 1916 the Lukens Steel Co., Coatesville, Pa., put in a 206-in. plate mill of the four-high type. This was a reversing mill with two 32-in. working rolls and two 50-in. backing rolls and is today making the widest and heaviest plate made anywhere in the world." The functioning of this mill, though rolling hot plate, is, on account of the extreme width and thinness of plate rolled, quite comparable to the rolling of wide strip either hot or cold and was a considerable factor in demonstrating the marked advantages available with the four-high or backing-roll mill for thin accurate rolling. As the writer has brought out, a demand for a product, the rolling of which required the character-istics of the backing-roll mill, was broached by the In-ternational Nickel Co. This resulted in an inquiry of March, 1924, for the building of a mill capable of cold-rolling wide nickel and monel metal sheets or strip, as mentioned. It may be of some interest to note, that whereas the .six-roll cluster mill with plain bearings was built for this installation, the mill designed by the United En-gineering and Foundry Co. for this inquiry was of the four-high type with roller bearings on the backing-roll necks, being essentially the same design as the four-high roller-bearing mill built in 1925 for the Rome Brass & Copper Co. This Rome mill, to quote again from Mr. Badlam's paper, "fulfilled every requirement, and was the model on which succeeding mills of this type were built."

The pattern of the coal industry west of the Mississippi River, so far as its history is concerned, is entirely different from that to the east of the "Father of Waters." When the Louisiana Purchase was consummated, one of Jefferson's first thoughts was to ascertain what sort of a country had been purchased, and to that end he sent Lewis and Clark to ascend the Missouri River and to reach the Pacific Ocean if possible, but above all to bring back a report showing the character of the country, its mineral and other resources, inhabitants, etc. This first expedition was supplemented by others to various parts of the vast domain for the same purpose; years later, when transportation routes were necessary to hold and develop the western country, a number of expeditions were sent to explore possible routes for railroads. The records of nearly all of these explorers, as will be shown later, contain references to coal in many localities, the possible value of which was realized but its potential value remained dormant for many years until increasing population and methods of transport made markets available. Missouri was the first state west of the Mississippi in which coal was produced and the names of a number of places show that the French were familiar with the coal deposits there. Lewis and Clark, soon after they left St. Louis, passed "a remarkable Coal Hill on the Larboard Side, called by the French Carbonere, this hill appeares to Contain great quantity of Coal."1 This hill was about seven miles below St. Charles. No other outcrops were seen by them until they had passed the present limits of the state. The Louisiana Gazette of April 9, 1805 contained an article on "The Missouri," author not stated, which said, "the short stay we have generally made among the savage nations has prevented us from making those researches, which would have supplied us with a more extensive information respecting the various mines found on the borders of the Missouri; we know with certainty only those of iron, lead and coal." In 1806 Pike passed through Missouri on his tour to Mexico. On August 17th, along the Osage River he remarked, "here the river-bank is

Delay in classifying the war minerals claims geographically and by minerals' has resulted because a part of the claims is in the hands of the commission which is holding hearings at points easy of access from the mining districts. It was necessary for the commission to take many claims for use at these hearings. Twenty days will be allowed claimants to file typewritten or printed briefs based on the record made by the commission's findings. At the end of twenty days, the case will be finally submitted to the Secretary of the Interior. No new facts will be considered, those which have been submitted to the commission only being given consideration. The Attorney General has issued a decision whereby only such claimants as were directly requested by the government to start operations will receive consideration under the War Minerals Act.
