LONGHOLE drilling with a heavy type percussion Leyner drill, jointed steel rods, and a tungsten carbide insert bit was investigated while drilling and working a quartz barite brecciated rock. Procedure and practice were developed and its suitability for tackling pillar and sill recovery proven and extended to regular stoping at Torbrit. Torbrit, as the name implies, is a contraction of the Toric property and the Britannia Mining & Smelting Co. Ltd., the former owners. This silver property, with minor amounts of lead, zinc, and rarer sulphides of little or no economic value, was discovered in 1916 from an outcrop in the Kitsault River, 18 miles north of Alice Arm Post Office, in the Portland Canal Mining District, B. C.

THIS paper describes part of a series of density measurements on low melting point metals being undertaken at the Mines Branch, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa, Canada. This program has received support from the Canadian Zinc and Lead Research Committee and the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization. Examples of the type of work being done have already been given in earlier papers' , which deal with the densities of lead, tin, and some of their alloys. Densities were measured using a graphite pyc-nometer by a technique which has already been described." The cadmium and indium, supplied by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada were of 99.999 pct purity. Density determinations on indium, as for lead and tin,1,2 were made under a vacuum of about 5 x 10-6 torr because the oxidation and vaporization characteristics of the metal do not create experimental difficulties. This contrasts markedly with cadmium which, even at the relatively low temperatures of our experiments, has a high vapor pressure and a strong oxidation potential. To suppress the harmful effects of these properties, determinations on cadmium were made with success under an atmosphere of argon, the technique having been previously established in this laboratory for measurements on zinc.3 The densities of cadmium and indium are listed in Table I and plotted in Figs. 1 and 2. From the graphs, it is readily observed that the densities of both metals vary linearly with temperature. This relationship expressed mathematically is of the form:

The salt deposits of the Mississippi Embayment region present a problem of origin so genetically related to the larger problem of the stratigraphy and structure of the region that a discussion of the one necessarily involves or assumes an understanding of the other. For this reason, I shall summarize briefly our knowledge of this region, emphasizing the facts related to the subject of this paper. In so doing I shall make liberal use of the reports of the National and State surveys. Geographically that section of the United States known as the Mississippi Embayment region represents a great V-shaped area, extending from near Cairo, Ill., to the Gulf of Mexico, and including Louisiana, eastern Texas, all that part of Arkansas bordering the Oua-chita and Ozark mountains, western Tennessee, Mississippi, and a part of Alabama. This great section Professor Harris has described as structurally a pitching trough, its medial line being well represented by the Mississippi River. Outcropping along the border of this area are the Cretaceous and Tertiary formations, unconformably laid down on the hard Paleozoic rock sheets that show more or less plication, deformation, and faulting, depending upon their proximity to the nearby major uplifts. East and west of the Mississippi River the Cretaceous and Tertiary beds dip river- and coastward at angles greater than the slope of the land. "Waters entering along the outcropping edges of the Tertiaries and Cretaceous and following bedding planes southward are soon thousands of feet beneath the surface." As the sedimentation of the region progressed, faulting and slips occurred along planes of pre-Cretaceous weakness. Whether these movements were genetically related to the loading of this V-shaped area, as Professor Harris seems to think, is a question still to be settled. The accompanying map, Fig. 1, was taken from Bulletin No. 7 of the Louisiana- Geological Survey. It shows the regional distribution of the salines, as well as an alignment of the domes, which has been assumed to indicate faulting.

An aircraft, manned by Canadians and crammed with modern scientific instruments, crisscrosses over the dense rainforests of tropical Surinam at Y4 kilometer intervals, prospecting for valuable mineral deposits. Mill head samples of Burmese lead and zinc ores arrive at a Colorado laboratory for analysis and experimentation to determine the best milling and ore-dressing techniques. At the new Institute for Applied Geology in Manila, Philippine mining engineers receive instructions from a Finnish petrologist. These scenes illuminate only a fraction of the exciting work in the mining and metallurgical fields being carried out by the United Nations Special Fund.

In the Si-C-0 system at temperatures of interest in process metallurgy there are four stable condensed phases—silicon, carbon, silica, and silicon carbide (Sic). Silicon melts at 1683oK1 and shows negligible solubility for carbon and oxygen at 1700°K. However, silicon dissolves approximately 1.5 at. pct C at 2500oK.2 Carbon in the form of graphite remains pure and dissolves negligible amount of silicon.' Silica (crysto-balite) melts at 2001°K' and is essentially a stoichio-metric compound. Recently The Wall Street Journal featured a series of articles titled "The Dirty Work-Brutal, Mindless Labor Remains a Daily Reality for Millions in The US.-Mining Coal, Shoveling Slag, Gutting Hogs Pays Bills But Can Drain Spirit, Hope." The article was devoted to describing how tough and dangerous is mining (and some other jobs) and how rough life is for miners and their families. Similarly during the past few years some psychiatrists and sociologists have devoted increased attention to the attitudes and life styles of miners. Unfortunately most of their approaches have been neither scientific nor objective, and very little good clinical research has been done on the subject.

Recently modernized, the surface plant of the Outokumpu mine in Finland incorporates a number of ideas meriting close scrutiny from this side of the Atlantic. The mining methods make extensive use of concrete in some unusual ways. Design of the headframe and surface plant represents the latest thinking of European engineers and includes an integral Koepe hoist. The deposit is in eastern Finland, province of North Karelia, 30 miles west northwest of Joensuu and at 60'44' N, latitude. Pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite mineralization occurs in a shear zone in quartzite near a body of serpentinite. Two lenses have a total length over 12.000 ft, with remaining reserves of the 3 to 4 pct Cu ore estimated at about 15 million metric tons.

The molybdenite deposits at Climax, Colo., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 141/2 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. Winter sets in not later than Nov. 1, the snowfall is very heavy, and the ground remains covered with snow until June 1, and sometimes even later. From June 1 to Oct. 1, there is much rain and a little snow falls in the late afternoon nearly every day. In October, 1917, there was one of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards of the year. Being just on the divide, constant strong winds blow the fine, dry snow with such force that, during most of the winter, outside work of any kind is accomplished under most trying conditions. Within a few miles of Climax, some of the richest gold placers of Colorado occur. One of them, McNulty Gulch, was just across on the northeastern flank of Bartlett mountain. This mountain, therefore, was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulfur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902, several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 m.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. Gold was not found in paying quantities, but throughout its length the tunnel passed through a fractured silicified granite, showing a fairly uniform distribution of a fine-grained bluish mineral, which was finally determined as molybdenite. Startup of the 9000 tpd Sacaton concentrator is expected to increase Asarco's domestic copper concentrate capacity by 21%. The plant site is located due west of the mining operations, consisting of both crushing and concentrating facilities. Arthur G. McKee & Co. served as the prime contractor for the project. The Sacaton mineralization contains both sulfide and oxide ores. Primary mineral constituents are chalcocite, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, and minor amounts of silver and occasional gold. Sulfides are distinguished from oxides when more than half the total copper content is in the form of a sulfide copper mineral. While non-sulfide copper minerals are considerably less prevalent throughout the orebody, they tend to occur quite intimately with the sulfide minerals, particularly in the upper zones of the mineralization. For this reason the decision was made to treat all the ore in a flotation circuit using existing sulfidizing methods.

ORE control is a matter of planning and supervision based on a foreknowledge of the content and distribution of ore. The Inspiration orebody is predominately a copper-sulphide blanket, overlain by an oxidized zone of copper silicates, copper carbonates, and barren capping. Most of the ore is treated by leaching, and the optimum requirement of this method is the goal toward which the mining schedule is aimed. Both open-pit operations and underground mining are used. The problems of ore control at Inspiration are: I—maintenance of metallurgical balance, 2—conservation of oxide ore, and 3—mining out of the orebody at an average grade which parallels that of the reserve figure. Prior to the fall of 1926 all of the Inspiration division ores were treated by flotation, but the mixed ores of the Live Oak—Keystone section carried too large a proportion of copper in the form of chrysocolla for satisfactory flotation. For this type of mixed ore the leaching process now in use had been worked out, and the plant was put into operation in the fall of 1926. The process is known as the ferric sulphate leach, and the leaching solvents contain both ferric sulphate and free sulphuric acid. Sulphide copper in the form of chalcocite is leached by the ferric sulphate, and the oxidized copper minerals are dissolved by the sulphuric acid. From the beginning of operations to the present time the plant has treated some 67 thousand tons of ore having an average copper content of 1.142 pct, of which 0.605 pct has been in the form of oxidized copper minerals. The plant is currently being operated at the rate of 11,500 tons per day, 7 days per week. However, this tonnage is produced in 6 days of mine operation. The average current grade is approximately 1 pct copper, of which about 50 pct is present as oxidized or acid-soluble copper. Close control of metallurgical procedures is a vital factor in operation of the plant and is in turn dependent upon careful regulation of feed. An excess of sulphide copper requires the presence of more ferric sulphate in the leaching solvents. On the other hand, an excess of ferric sulphate in the presence of a low sulphide feed seriously reduces the efficiency of electrolytic precipitation in tank house operations. This condition must be avoided at all costs. An additional factor must be considered. It is known that the sulphide content is predominant in the ore which remains in the reserve. To maintain the necessary sulphide-oxide proportion, so that the entire reserve will mine out at both a grade and a sulphide-oxide ratio that will be permissible throughout the remaining life of the property, it is obvious that the oxide reserve must be currently preserved to as great an extent as possible. Fortunately much of the oxide reserve is found in the open-pit operation. This happy circumstance adds flexibility to the procedure and makes it possible to maintain the close regulation necessary to insure best overall results, both mining and metallurgical. The two ore streams from the pit and underground operations join at the coarse-crushing plant, and proper control must be exercised before the ore reaches this point. The open pit is currently providing about 55 pct of the ore and underground operations the balance of production. Both operations are under a single superintendent so that the closely interrelated problems may be more readily controlled. The least flexible of the two producing units is the underground mine, where the mining method is block caving. Although a block of ground may be undercut and developed, characteristics of the material determine its caving action. The ore in the chutes must be drawn. The area currently mined from underground is in a zone predominately sulphide and is generally

Stress-strain data are reported for sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested in compression at diffevent strain rates in the telrlperature range from 70° to 873°K. Quantitative equations are given for the stvain-rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress and the initial rate of work havdening. The properties so determined are compared with results previously reported for metals. ALTHOUGH the effects of strain rate and temperature on the stress-strain characteristics of metals have been extensively investigated1,2 these effects have not been studied in detail in ionic crystals. In the only previous investigations on the effect of strain rate on the deformation of ionic crystals. Gilman and gohnston3 and Hulse and pask4 have shown that the yield stress of lithium fluoride and magnesium oxide at room temperature is proportional to the ninth or tenth root of the strain rate. CRYSTAL PREPARATION Lithium fluoride, sodium chloride. and magnesium oxide single crystals were purchased from the Har-shaw Chemical Co. The compression fixture and sample preparation have been described in detail previously.5 The detectable impurities in MgO were eight parts in 105 of Fe and six parts in 105 of Si; in LiF, six parts in 105 of Mg; and in NaC1, two parts in 105 of Fe and four parts in 10&apos; of Mg. The cleaved samples measured - 0.1 in. by 0.1 in. by 0.3 in. Prior to testing all samples were annealed at -0.8 of their melting point and cooled to room tempera- ture at 50 C per hr.&apos; Samples were strained at rates (<) of 0.1, 0.01, 0.002, and 0.0002 in. per in. per min. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Fig. 1 is a plot of the critical resolved shear stress a,. (extrapolation of slope of easy glide region to zero strain) of sodium chloride, lithium fluoride, and magnesium oxide tested at different strain rates as a function of temperature. In all crystals at all strain rates a, decreases with increasing temperature according to an equation of the type397 where uo is a stress constant, K is a constant, and T is the absolute temperature. The points in Fig. 1 are the average of six tests. It is evident that there is a break in the log 0,- temperature plots at a characteristic temperature T,. The constant K of Eq. The years immediately ahead-1961, 1962, 1963- will be critical years from every standpoint for the young engineer. In the next few years, he must learn to grow professionally. Most often, the rate and extent of this growth will be governed by his own initiative and perseverance. Habits and attitudes acquired during these early professional years relate very closely to, and even foreshadow, future accomplishments. The future goal of the young engineer is a moving target. It will change with professional growth, family requirements, changes in predominant interest, general economic and business conditions and geographic location. However ambitious and stead-fast in his goal he may be, the young engineer should not hesitate to adjust or change-for he really does not know initially what he is best fitted for and will not know until he has tried a number of things patiently and persistently.

I had the honor to present to the American Institute of Mining Engineers at the Pittsburg meeting, February, 1896, a paper having the foregoing title, in which I said : " It has generally been accepted as a fact that cast-iron, under the influence of repeated shocks, becomes brittle, and will finally break under a blow which otherwise it would have withstood. It will probably surprise metallurgists, therefore, to learn that experiment disproves the supposed fact, and establishes exactly its opposite. " The result of about a thousand tests of bars of cast-iron of all grades, from the softest foundry mixtures to the strongest car-wheel metal, enables me to assert with confidence that, within limits, cast-iron is materially strengthened by subjection to repeated shocks or blows." In spite of its recognized irregularities, the cyanide-assay for copper has always been popular among volumetric methods, being easy and rapid, and reasonably accurate when the solution tested contains nothing but pure copper and ammonium salts. In order to secure this condition, however, especially in operati~ig on low-grade ores, tailings and slags of complex composition, it is the practice to precipitate the copper from the ore-solution,—usually by means of metallic zinc or aluminum. The copper thus precipitated in the metallic form must be dissolved again; and the separa tion is never, in practice, complete, since an appreciable amount of the copper remains behind in the first solution, and the second solution always contains some of the other metals of the gangue; so that the result is at best but partially satisfactory. In the case of plastic deformation by slip, von Mises&apos; showed that an arbitrary shape change of a crystal generally requires the activation of five independent slip systems. The selection of the five active systems was worked out by Taylor ,&apos; who hypothesized that, among all combinations of equivalent slip systems which are capable of accommodating a given imposed strain, the active combination is that one for which the sum of the absolute values of the glide shears is a minimum. Taylor analyzed the case of {lll}( 110) slip for fcc metals and applied the analysis to crystals undergoing axisymmetric flow, which approximates the shape change of an embedded grain in a polycrystalline aggregate deformed in tension (or compression). For the twelve equivalent (111) (110) slip systems, there are 384 independent combinations of five slip systems that satisfy the imposed strain.&apos; Taylor laboriously calculated the value of M = ZjIyj /E for each combination (although some were missed) and obtained the minimum M, hence the active combination, for a number of axial orientations distributed throughout the stereographic triangle. (yj is shear from slip on the th system and e is the tensile strain). Detailed contours of constant minimum M were recently obtained by Hosford and Backofen using a simplified but equivalent Bishop and ill&apos; analysis. Due to the numerous combinations of slip systems involved in the calculations, however, the full potential of the powerful Taylor analysis has not been exploited. For this reason, we have recently utilized techniques of linear programming to obtain solutions of the Taylor analysis for axisymmetric flow, for slip on {110)(< 111), {112)(111), and {123)(111) systems as well as mixed slip composed of these three systems. These slip modes are of obvious importance in the deformation of bcc crystals. Some of the salient results are summarized below. 1) Stress-Strain Data for Polycrystal. The value of M averaged over all axial orientations is the ratio of the tensile flow strength of a randomly oriented aggregate to the critical resolved shear stress for slip. This value enters importantly in theoretical deductions of the polycrystalline stress-strain curve from single-crystal data.2&apos;3&apos;5 Table I lists the values of Ma,, for the several cases of slip, as obtained by the present computer work. 2) Texture Hardening. Since the value of M depends on the axial orientation, the (tensile) flow strength of a specimen may be increased through texture control.&apos; An example of the computer results is shown in Fig. 1, where contours of minimum M have been computer-plotted for the case of mixed slip on {110}(111), {112)(111),and {123}(11 1) systems. It may be seen that, under axisymmetric flow, wires of (111) and (110) axial orientations are 50 pct stronger than those oriented at (100) .

Measurements of the quantity of xanthate abstracted from mineral surfaces and put into solution by an increase in the hydroxyl ion concentration were made. A residual xanthate concentration of 59.6 ppm was found in one case at a pH of 11.8. The abstracted xanthate is capable of acting as a collector on fresh mineral surfaces under proper conditions. It was learned that as the hydroxyl ion increased and the xanthate abstracted, the coarse particles lose their floatability first. A volume weight relationship based on percentage coverage was established and seems to offer a reasonable explanation of the cause of observed results.

The Interior Department has been in a state of disarray for many months. At first this was attributed to Interior Secretary Walter Hickel&apos;s inability to anticipate how his words would be interpreted by Press-Radio-TV. But then the already disquieted ernployees in the Department became aware that plans were afoot to take bits and pieces of the various antipollution programs from Interior; Health, Education and Welfare: the Atomic Energy Commission and other agencies and lump them together into a new Federal agency. Interior, many predicted, would be a shell of its former robust self. Hardly had this rumor started to add to employee uneasiness before the other big shoe hit the floor. The new rumor had it that the Bureau of Mines was being stripped of most of its research functions and that the Office of Coal Research and allied research groups would be abolished altogether.
