SUMMARY FOLLOWING the discovery of Parke and Ham that deoxidation control of cast molybdenum can be predicated upon simple fractographic examination, a special study of that metal was undertaken to investigate those patterns ascribed to forgeability and nonforgeability. An elaborately developed system of cleavage patterns immediately rewarded the study; and they are reported here as a necessarily preliminary contribution calling attention to information which is both new in type and in origin. In general, the present observations confirm those of Parke and Ham, and Woodside; but they also disclose a wealth of detail and correlated phenomena which greatly expand the earlier information. For example, the oxide pattern of nonforgeability is found to be complex, perhaps involving as many as three distinctive patterns. And the nature of the carbide seems to be at least twofold. In addition, transgranular facets are here shown for the first time. Elaborately complex, but in a characteristic manner, these facets depict distortion in original crystal growth which provides truly extraordinary patterns. No carbide and oxide forms display themselves transgranularly, except in profile as exceedingly thin superficial films at the grain boundaries. Crystallographic features are also rare-a condition undoubtedly resulting from the great substructural distortion; but occasionally registrations are found of cleavage on {001}, and faulted areas believed to be Neumann-type deformation on {112}. INTRODUCTION Parke and Ham, 1 and again Woodside, 2 have reported that the forgeability of molybdenum cast by their vacuum-electric-arc process can be predicted with great dependability by a simple fractographic observation. They state that nonforgeability is the result of a grain boundary oxide which can be readily identified on the fracture facet at high magnification; and they convert the nonforgeable condition to a forgeable one by increasing the carbon content of the melt until the oxide structures subsequently observed in the fractograph become replaced by a second strongly marked pattern characteristic of carbide and coincidentally indicative of forgeability. Considerable importance immediately attaches to such observations: (I) because of their direct commercial application to one of metallurgy's inviting and relatively unexplored metals; (2) because of a general scientific curiosity regarding the nature of these characteristic markings; and (3) perhaps more important, because of

Many investigations have been made on the effect of the variables of pressure, sintering temperature and sintering time on the physical and microstructural charactcristics of metal-powder compacts. Severa1 such investigations have indicatcd that pressure is the least important of these three factors in an attempt to secure a dense. strong compact by a simple coltl-pressing and sintering procedure. However, it was felt that a further study of the effect of pressure on pressed and sintered metal powder compacts might prove interesting, for the following reasons: In work done in the past on the effect of pressure, temperature. arid time, the, metal-powder compacts were subjected to long sintering periods, and temperatures right up to the melting point of the metal were applied. It was thought that pressure might exert a more profound effect under short-time simtering and within narrower ranges of temperature. such as normally would be applied in large-scale production of metal-powder parts. 2. It was hoped that something further might be learned of the nature of the bond in pressed and sintered metal-powder compacts. 3. It was thought that interesting infor mation concerning the work-hardening effect of pressure on the crystal structure. of sintered metal-powder compacts would be obtained. Procedure Rectangular bars, 2 by 1/2 by 1/4 in. were molded from the following metal powders: Atomizcd till powder, 325-mesh Atomized aluminum powder, 325-mesh Reduced copper powder, 100-mesh Electrolytic iron powder, 100-mesh Atomized 70-30 brass powder, l00-mesh The, till powder was molded at various pressures up to 40 tolls per sq. in. This was the maximum, because at higher molding pressures there was considerable extrusion of tin into the die wall, jamming the die plungers. The tin specimens were not -in tered, as this phase of the work was- done merely to see how much a very sold metal could be compressed. The aluminum powder was compressed at various pressures up to 50 lons per sq in. Higher pressures could not be used because of extrusion into the die wall The compacts were sintered one hour at 000 in pure dry hydrogen. The copper powder was molded at vari-ous pressures up to 96 tons per sq. in. One set was sintered at 750°C., another at 050 C. for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. The electrolytic iron powder was molded at various pressures up to 00 tons per sq. in. and sintered, one set at Soo°C and one set at 1300°C for one hour in pure dry hydrogen. Extra 325-mesh specimens were also prepared to study the effect of reduced particle size on grain structure. The brass powder was molded at various pressures up to 96 tolls per sq. in. and silltered for one hour. one set at 65o°C. and one set at 800°C, in pure dry hydrogeu.

C., President of the General Mining Association of the Province of Quebec, occupied the chair, and, after welcoming the guests of the occasion in the name of that Association, introduced Mayor Desjardins, who expressed a cordial greeting for the city of Montreal. After appropriate acknowledgements from the President and the Secretary of the Institute, President Birkinbine delivered his presidential address. The first regular session of the Institute was held on Wednesday morning, February 22d, in the Physics Building of McGill University, where all succeeding sessions were also held. [ ] Even though we have a small audience, I am sure there are some here who are interested in sponge iron. It is a large subject, with a lot of economic interest, and one that will continue to grow in importance as the years go by and as the conditions that urge action in that direction increase. The authors have chosen to deal in this paper with one particular narrow phase of a long program of work by the Bureau of Mines. Before asking for any general discussion, I would myself like to ask Mr. Buehl if he would tell us just a little bit about the mechanism of discharge and the form in which the material was discharged; that is, when dolomite is added, what happens to the dolomite? R. C. Buehl (author's reply)-You are interested in the equipment that was used? H. W. GRAHAM-No, just the product. R. C. Buehl-The product was in granular form, of a shape very similar to that of the ore used. Using minus 10-mesh ore, the product is essentially minus 10-mesh, mixed with the coal and dolomite. It is then passed through a belt type of magnetic separator, which picks up the magnetic iron and allows the dolomite and coal to fall off. If the coal is sufficiently valuable, it can be separated from the dolomite and, provided the coal has a sufficiently low ash content, it can be reused. For instance, if a low-ash reducing agent like petroleum coke is used, it can be reused until all the carbon is consumed. H. W. Graham-That clears the point for me. Formerly great divergence of opinion existed in regard to the influence of copper in steel, as affecting its various physical properties. More recently the investigations of Stead,l Breuil,2 Wigham,3 Burgess and Aston: Ball and Wingham,5 Miiller; Dillner,7 and others have shown fairly good agreement in the major points. Copper steel has been shown by these investigators to possess special properties which make it valuable for certain uses. The general range of composition of the useful alloys of copper and iron, and of copper, iron, and carbon, has been quite definitely established, for the former by Burgess and Aston,8 and for the latter by Breuil9 and Stead.10 Stead11 has removed one difficulty in reconciling certain of the earlier data by calling particular attention to the influence 'of carbon in copper steels. Another point which caused confusion in the earlier investigations, particularly in regard to " red-shortness," was the presence of sulphur. Failure to note the presence of sulphur often led to attributing " red-shortness" to the presence of small amounts of copper. Turner12 has called attention to the fact that where copper exists in an iron ore it often occurs as the sulphide, so that the presence of copper in steel made from such ores might also, necessarily, mean the presence of sulphur. It is evident that the effect in this case might be quite different than where pure copper was added.

When mining operations were first instituted in the mines of the Miami Copper Co., at Miami, Ariz., the relatively hard character of the ground in the western section of the property made it seem advisable to use a wide shrinkage stope and pillar system. The system as finally evolved was applied to the mining of 2,300,000 tons of ore by the use of stopes and pillars each 50 ft. in width. Development, mining and extraction of this reserve has been continuously in progress since 1910, and the final stages of extraction are now reached. A complete survey of all phases of this system can therefore be made. Modification in working methods was obviously necessary, and the system to be described is believed to be typical of the best features. Development The preliminary work had three main objectives: The opening of a haulage level, the construction of a drawing-off level, and the driving of sublevels for use in stoping. In addition to these, some extra sublevel drifting was necessary to determine exactly the boundaries of the orebody, the general outline having been determined by churn drilling. This development was based on the requirements of stopes 50 ft. wide, with pillars 50 ft. wide between each stope. The length of these units varied from 200 to 500 ft.. Haulage Level The tramming level was 50 ft. below the floor of the stopes, and the tramming lines were run parallel with the long axis of the stopes. These lines were also beneath the middle of the stopes and pillars. Each line therefore served one stope or one pillar, this arrangement making it possible to load along an entire stope without switching or uncoupling. This advantage is apparent principally during the process of stoping when rapid drawing of excess broken ore is desirable. Results are reported of a study of surface dendrilic structure of an Al- Cu alloy solidified against a chill wall. Most primary and secondary "arms " in the surface dendritic structure are arranged orthogonally, giving the impression of strong preferred orientalion on the surface. However, no such preferred orientation exists and it is therefore evident the arms do not represent (100) directions. The primary arms are shown to be interseclions of a (100) plane wilh the chill plane, or, equally often. the projeclion of a (100) direction on the chill plane. Secondary dendrite arms are usually within a few degrees of 90 deg to the primary arm, independent of grain orientalion. Prirary, secondary, and higher-order surface dendrite arms almost always represenl intersections of (100) platzes with the chill surace, or pvojections of (100) direclions. Growlh of secondary arms is favored on the side of the primary arm where a (100) direclion points toward the chill surfAce a1 a Lou, angle. Surface dendrile arms are often observed to be bent. In these cases, the crystal lallice changes orientation; bending is concave to the chill surface. In a previous paper,' a technique was discussed whereby large grains can be obtained at a chill surface. The technique used involves quickly drawing superheated liquid A1-4.5 pct Cu alloy into a thin copper mold, so that the mold is full well before solidification begins. The chill surfaces employed are polished copper blocks coated with amorphous carbon. Shrinkage during solidification between dendrite arms and grains delineates both, without the need for polishing or etching of the cast surface. The grain structure of the chill surface was discussed in a previous paper;' in this paper, the dendrite arms within each grain are examined. Previous work on surface dendrites includes that of Edmunds, who studied the development of preferred orientation in zinc, cadmium, and magnesium.' In zinc and cadmium, he found that the surface region has a (0001) texture (parallel to the chill surface). Walton and Chalmers reasoned that, since the fast growth (1010) directions are in the basal plane, nuclei which have this plane parallel to the mold wall would produce larger grains than nuclei with other orientations. Hence, the texture observed is as expected.3 The same authors, in measurements on aluminum ingots, found no preferred orientation at the mold wall. However, the X-ray technique they used measured the preferred orientation in terms of grain numbers, not grain areas; larger grains were weighted equally with small ones. No preferred orientation is expected on this basis at the chill surface. In a later paper,' Edmunds stated that experiments show a random grain orientation at the surface in die cast aluminum; his technique, also used in his earlier paper, takes account of grain area. Little work has been published on the dendritic structure of metal chill grains. Recent work of Biloni and Chalmers on "predendritic growth" shows the change in morphology from spherical to dendritic during the initial stages of freezing, 5 but this work did not include detailed examination of the fully developed dendrites. Other pertinent work includes that of Lin-denmeyer, who investigated the growth of ice dendrites. 6 When growth was on a substrate, the dendrite axes were bent. The bend corresponded to a change in orientation of the crystal lattice and occurred in such a way as to align the basal plane to the substrate. DENDRITE STRUCTURE Fig. 1 shows the chill surface of a typical casting poured above the critical temperature necessary to produce coarse grains. A cursory examination of these grains shows that the surface dendrite arms within most of the grains are oriented roughly perpendicular to each other. One is tempted to assume that these are (100) directions and that, therefore, marked preferred orientation exists at the chill face. This, however, is not the case. Each of the grains in the casting of Fig. 1 was separately identified, Fig. 2, and its orientation determined by the Laue back-reflect ion method. Results are given in Fig. 3 and it is seen there that no preferred orientation exists. Even when grain area is accounted for, there is no significant preferred orientation. The relationship between surface grain structure and crystal orientation was then obtained by assigning X and Y axes to the casting surface, Fig. 1, and assigning the same axes to the stereographic projections of each grain. Thus, the visible surface structure could be compared readily with grain orientation. This was done for fifty-five of the grains of Fig. 1. Results of this study on three typical grains are described below, and some general observations given subsequently. Fig. 4 shows the structure and stereographic projection of a grain which lies near the (100) zone (with respect to the casting surface). The X and Y directions are marked on the projection, and the photomicrograph mounted with the same orientation. Poles of the stereographic projection represent crys-tallographic directions in the grain which point out of the casting, toward the chill. Two (100) directions are shown in Fig. 4. A line joining the center of the projection and a pole represents the projection of the pole onto the X-Y plane (chill surface). Two such lines are shown in Fig. 4 (solid lines). A line joining the intersection of a great circle with the circumference of the projection gives the trace of a crystallo-graphic plane in the chill surface; two such traces are shown (dashed lines).

At first blush one is tempted to say that iron-mines are like any other mines, and that principles governing miniug-property in general will apply to them. But there are certain considerations which seem to repay reflection. Gold and copper are more or less independent of transportation. The proof of this is that those metals are profitably mined and shipped from the remotest corners of the earth. Their value is determined by the cost of production on the ground. This is quite true of gold, not quite so true of copper, not at all true of iron. If New York were a. fishing-village and Chicago a swamp, Calumet & Hecla might still be a bonanza. The main element of its value is the 60 lb. of fine copper per ton which it produced for years. But the Mesabi Range is absolutely dependent upon the industrial activity in the United States. Iron-manu-facture in Europe would give it no value whatever. If Chicago and New York had a population of Peruvians or Hindus, the Hull-Rust mine would be as worthless a bit of landscape as any tundra in Alaska. I have discussed these facts more or less casually and dimly in my book on the cost of mining and in my report to the Tax Commissioners of Michigan.1 I shall try here to bring them out in more detail. I have already referred to some differences in the problem of mining as between the more precious metals, e.g., gold, and the less precious and more abundant minerals, like iron and coal; but it is interesting to note that the literature of the eco-

THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. INTRODUCTION A FEW years ago, gravel mining in the ancient river beds of Sierra county was the principal industry of the county. Operating drift mines were very numerous and many large hydraulic mines were in action. Eventually the State laws put an end to hydraulic mining, it being claimed that the silt carried down the streams to the valleys filled the rivers and caused winter floods, which were damaging to the surrounding farms. The ancient river deposits which could easily be found were, in the course of 40 years, worked out or practically so. The prohibition of hydraulic mining was a severe blow to the industry in general. The deposits were not developed and the gravel-mining industry practically stood still for many years. In Sierra county, nearly all the hydraulic mines were at the points where the ancient channels were exposed to view by reason of the modern stream erosion, or, in the miner's language, where the channels "enter" or "break out of" the ridges. The claims covering them also covered large areas in which were long segments of lava-capped channels, suitable for drift mines, and the points being hydraulicked were usually the controlling points of attack. Men who have followed hydraulic mining for any length of time seldom are content to work a drift mine. Knowing the great value of their deposits and feeling that they had been robbed by the State, these men have stubbornly held to their claims. The gold that is carried in these gravel channel deposits is more or less scattered throughout the depth and width of the deposit; the percentage that can be recovered by the process of drifting ranges from 50 to 75 per cent. of the total. In hydraulicking, practically all of the deposit is put through the sluices, and as the cost per cubic yard is only about 10 per cent. of the cost of drifting, the deposits, if classed as hydraulic mines, are much more valuable than if classed as drift mines; hence the old timers have held their claims (now worthless as hydraulic mines) at prices which the drift-mining industry could not stand; and such mines

Large cryslals of high-purily iron (99.996+ pcl) cannot be obtained by the usual strain-ameal technique. Repealed phase transformation by thermal cycling prior to crilical deformation improves the capabilily of cryslal growith but fails to yield satisfactory crystals. Imperfect columnar crystals can be produced by the phase-transition method. The addition of a small amounl (0.005 wl pet) of nilrogen IT was reported'-4 that for metals of very high purity the usual procedures of the strain-anneal technique fail to produce large crystals. This was eliminates practically all the difficulties in crystal growth by the normal strain-anneal procedures. An actual example is presented, showing that most parts of a strip have been converted into a large crystal by this method. The addition of nitrogen, which can be removed from iron with less difficulty, is believed to be more desirable than carbon additions for the same purpose. thought to be due to the strong tendency for recovery in the high-purity metals: hence the critically strained matrix undergoes polygonization instead of recrystallization upon annealing for crystal growth. The problem of unsteady-state condensate-gas flow through porous media leads to a set of second-order non-linear partial differential equations. Such a set of equations is numerically solved in the case of radial two-phase flow around a well, taking into consideration both the thermodynamical properties of the fluid and the mechanical properties of the reservoir. The fluid properties, reflecting the PVT relationship of the gaseous and liquid phases, are expressed by using the partial specific masses of the two main separator products in these phases. The flow properties of the reservoir rock are expressed by the generalized Darcy's law for the liquid phase and by a quadratic relationship between the rate of flow and the pressure gradient for the gaseous phase. The numerical solution of the equations for pressure and saturation US radius and time is worked out through programs written for a computer. The evolution of bottom-hole pressures, well productivities or- deliverabilities and effluent compositions with the depletion of the reservoir is easily derived. The application to the Saharian gas-condensate field Hassi R'Mel led to a better understanding of the drainage mechanism. A zone of fairly high liquid saturation develops around the wells, reducing the effective permeability, and represents a loss of condensible products in addition to the PVT-like retrograde condensation. lnside this zone, near the well, the deviation from Darcy's law for the flow of the gaseous phase governs the well deliver-ability. A back-pressure test has been computed and correlates with the field results. INTRODUCTION Two-phase flow of volatile hydrocarbons, like condensate gas or light crude oil, may be treated as the flow of a binary mixture by an arbitrary division of the chemical components into two groups. This is translated into two equations of mass continuity, which constitute a set of relation- ships for the pressure and the saturations vs the space coordinates and the time. The equations contain the laws governing the composition and the motion of the phases. The problem so defined is solved with the assumption that the compositions of the phases at any pressure are respectively the same as those observed in a PVT measuring cell under differential liberation. In a first series of computations, it was assumed that the flow obeys the generalized Darcy's law. A satisfactory representation of the retrograde condensation around the well was thus obtained. In addition, the trend toward decreasing effective permeabilities was obtained, and the computed composition of the effluent checked the laboratory values. However, it has not been possible within this basic assumption to represent the non-linear relationship between the production rate and the bottom-hole pressure drawdown as observed for gas wells in the field. Following the advice of A. Houpeurt it was decided to consider the relative permeability to gas as a function of the velocity of the gas Phase.1 The necessary physical determinations were made by E. COstaséque using a method devised by A. Houpeurt and R. Iffly. As numerical processing of the equations progressed, several difficulties were encountered which were overcome through collaboration with the computer manufacturer. This mathematical model of two-phase flow in porous media had been primarily intended for and extensively applied to the case of the Hassi R'Mel gas-condensate field, operated by SN Repal for SEHR, a joint subsidiary of SN Repal and CFP (A). The programs have also found their applications to forecast the behavior of several fields in the Sahara area containing light and volatile hydrocarbons. BASIC EQUATIONS We will consider a zone in the porous reservoir where the flow properties and the in situ composition of the fluids can be assumed to be uniform. IN the Leadville district toward the close of the "intermediate mesothermal period" of mineralization, there occurred a stage of ore deposition marked by a rather complex mineral association. As bismuth minerals formed in many places during this period, it is here called the "bismuth stage" for convenience of description. The minerals so far identified with this stage, listed roughly in the order of prominence, are: chalco-pyrite; several varieties of galena, differing slightly from one another in their small contents of silver, bismuth and tellurium; altaite; hessite; galenobismutite; alaskaite; aikinite; gold; tennantite; argentite; and perhaps sphalerite and arsenopyrite. With the exception of gold, the age relations of these minerals are difficult to determine. As shown in their descriptions, they all appear contemporaneous and hypogene. Gold may be in part contemporaneous, but most of it is distinctly later. Where minerals of this stage occur so that they can be mined alone, as at the Tucson mine, they constitute high-grade ore. Elsewhere their presence in small amounts has served to increase greatly the value of what otherwise would be low-grade pyritic or zinc-lead sulphide ore. The distribution of the bismuth ores corresponds closely to the distribution of gold ores, though not so general. It seems probable that most of the gold in the district was deposited during the "bismuth stage." These ores occur relatively near the supposed centers of mineralization in Breece and Printer Boy Hills or deep down along the Tucson-Maid fault, which is one of the well recognized channels of mineralization in the Iron Hill and Graham Park areas- Consideration of the high-grade nature of this mineralization and the fact that it appears to be found relatively close to the source of mineralization suggests that prospecting along some of the known channels, even deeper than they have yet been prospected, may offer hope of commercial success.

The present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said, by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have made it essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. The present work has been done in an endeavor to correlate and complete the data on the constitution of alloys of zinc with other common metals, dealing exclusively, however, with the zinc-rich alloys in which the zinc content is between 90 and 100 per cent. This investigation has included the systems lead-zinc, cadmium-zinc, iron-zinc, copper-zinc, aluminum-zinc, nickel-zinc, manganese-zinc, cobalt-zinc, tin-zinc, and magnesium-zinc. The important ternary system zinc-lead-cadmium and the zinc corners of other ternary systems have been investigated in connection with this work but will not be dealt with here. Zinc does not form a single homogenous zinc-rich solid solution over any considerable range of concentration with any of the metals mentioned. A limited range of solid solubility is said, by previous investigators, to occur in several cases and certain effects on the properties of zinc are attributed (with varying degrees of consistency among different writers) to the presence of certain other metals dissolved in zinc. The increasing use of rolled zinc and the possibilities offered by zinc as a casting alloy in certain fields have made it essential to determine precisely these equilibrium relationships. In carrying out this investigation reliance was placed chiefly on two methods, conductivity measurements and microscopic analysis. The first method proved valuable in determining the existence and extent of solid solubility. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the fundamental relationship between the net energy used and the respective product size throughout the entire range of sizes covered by crushing and grinding, and an attempt to find a sensible correlation between the existing theories. Walker, Lewis, McAdams, and Gilliland' have given the following differential equation of a general form for comminution: dE = -C§ [1] where E is the net energy required per unit weight in a certain process of comminution; x is the factor indicating the fineness of the product; n is the exponent indicating the order of the process, and C is a constant related with the material, units chosen, etc. H exponent n in the above equation is replaced by numerical figures 2, 1, and 1 1/2, the integrated form of the general equation leads to the well known fundamental theories represented by the law of von Rittinger,' law of Kick, and the third theory of comminution by Bond, respectively. The total net energies (E) from infinite feed size to a product of size x are as follows: The net energy required in a certain process of comminution is proportional to the new surface developed according to the law of von Rittinger, to the weight or size of the bodies treated according to the law of Kick, and to the length of the new cracks formed which initiate breakage according to the theory and explanation by Bond. On a logarithmic paper, where particle size is presented on the abscissa and energy consumption on the ordinate (see Fig. 21, all three relationships are represented by straight lines. The slope m of the line according to the law of von Rittinger is equal to -1.0; of Kick, 0; and of Bond, -0.5. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Rittinger has been presented, e.g., by Gross and zimmerley5 on quartz crushed in a drop weight crusher and evaluated for surface by the method of dissolution, by Dean on magnetite crushed by a similar method and evaluated for surface by the determination of coersive force, by piret7 and co-workers on a group of minerals crushed again by a similar method as well as by compression and evaluated for surface by permeability and gas adsorption methods, and by schellinger8 on a group of minerals ground in a calorimetric ball mill and evaluated for surface by gas adsorption. Experimental evidence in favor of the law of Kick seems to be scant in the field of comminution. On the other hand, in the field of mechanical engineering Kick's law seems to be of fundamental nature in processes such as cutting, pressing, shaping, and rolling of metallic substances. Experimental evidence in favor of the third theory has been provided by Bond." To a large extent, data are based on the vast amount of grindability tests performed in the laboratories of Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co. In addition to the devoted proponents of one or the other of the basic theories listed above, certain investigators have indicated that one of the theories might be applied for a certain range of sizes, while another theory might be used for other sizes. THE use of ball, rod and tube mills for grinding ore, cement and other materials has grown so rapidly during the past forty years that the world's annual consumption of ferrous grinding media for these mills is now estimated to be between one half million and one million tons per year. Ferrous grinding balls constitute the major portion of this tonnage. Obviously they represent sufficient value to justify thorough studies' of the factor sgoverning their performance. The selection of grinding balls is governed principally by: I. Quality (wear resistance, impact resistance, soundness, and the like). 2. Sources of supply and delivered cost. 3. Grinding characteristics or efficiency in the ball mill. This paper deals principally with the quality of ferrous grinding balls. In the study of these factors certain data relative to the fundamental nature of ball wear in ball mills have been obtained. These data are also presented and discussed briefly. THE DEVELOPMENT OF A SUITABLE WEAR TEST A study of the fundamental factors governing the quality of grinding balls has been hampered seriously by the fact that a competent test has, in the past, involved the purchase of several hundred tons of balls of a specific type which were then run in one or more ball mills for a period ranging from several months to several years' duration. Often, during the period of test, it became necessary to change operating conditions or the character of the ore fed, to the test mill with the result that the rate of ball consumption changed and the test figures became of little value. Under such circumstances, progress in the development of better grinding balls, has been necessarily slow. Economic factors and variations in the quality of balls produced by different sources of supply generally make it necessary for each mill operator to determine for himself the most suitable type of balls for his mills. In our own ball mill grinding operations at Climax, Colo., we were faced with this problem. After we had run a few large scale wear tests at considerable expense we decided to investigate the possibilities of a small scale wear test which would be capable of testing numerous types of balls within a relatively short time. The most important requirement of any test is, of course, that it give results which can be used to predict accurately the wear in full scale operations. It was known that Ellis and his associates1,2 had developed a method of testing grinding balls by small scale tests run at the Ontario Research Foundation. Ellis' method of testing was used as a starting point in our investigations. IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

There are those in the Colstrip, Mont., area who can still remember the opening of the Rosebud mine in 1923. For 35 years it was a steady employer of 80 or 90 residents who produced coal for the railroad. In 1958, though, mining ceased as diesel locomotives supplanted steam engines. The mine was purchased in 1959 by Montana Power, the parent of Western Energy Co., and production resumed in 1968. Long Construction Co. was chosen as operator of the mine equipment. At that time, reserves appeared virtually unlimited. The thick Rosebud seam coursed through alternate sections of railroad holdings and federal land-then came the federal moratorium on coal leasing in 1971. About the time Western Energy completed the special leasing procedure to extend reserves from an existing mine, a new federal monkey wrench was thrown into the works with passage of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977.

THE composition and quality of finished steel depend upon selection and proportioning of the raw materials of the charge as well as upon control of furnace practice. This chapter deals only with the raw materials of the basic open-hearth process that are important in determining the composition of the steel or slag. They are the metallic charge, oxygen-bearing materials, fluxes, alloying and deoxidizing additions, and certain refractory materials used for maintenance of bottoms. Other refractories, which may affect the slag composition, are discussed in Chapter 3. Wide variations are possible in the type and composition of charged materials but certain limiting relations among the elements of the charge must be observed. Since the process consists essentially of refining by the oxidation of undesired dements, a balance must be established between the sources of oxygen and the elements in the charge that are subject to oxidation (see Chapters 2 and 7). For example, if it is desired to use a high ratio of blast-furnace hot metal to scrap, it is necessary to add an oxygen-bearing material such as ore or mill scale to eliminate the excess carbon and silicon that are present in the hot metal. An example of the opposite extreme is the use of a metallic charge composed entirely of steel scrap. With this type of charge, it is common practice to substitute burnt lime for limestone as a flux and to charge some carbonaceous material such as coke to avoid an excess of oxygen in relation to the elements of the charge that are subject to oxidation. Elements such as copper and nickel, which are not oxidized or eliminated by, any other reaction, may be introduced into the charge only to the extent to which they are permissible in the finished steel. An example of adjustment of the charge for elements of this type is found in the use of steel scrap high in copper. In this case, metallic components of the charge other than the scrap should be low in copper, or a sufficiently high ratio of pig iron to scrap should be charged to dilute the copper from the
