THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

Continuous mining machinery provides the coal industry with one way to compete for a larger share of the total energy market. Various types of machines are discussed and some of the problems with continuous miners, encountered by operators, are reviewed. Equipment manufacturers are working with mine personnel to provide solutions for problems that arise. While coal production over the past 25 or 30 years has been on a horizontal plane, coal's share of the total energy market has declined. To participate more effectively in this total energy market, it is necessary to produce coal more efficiently. It is the obligation of all management, employes, and mining departments to gear the deep mining industry to the rapid progress and changing of today's modern industry. This can be accomplished in the near future with the selection of the proper type of continuous miner best suited to each operator's individual situation. In most mining operations there is tremendous incentive to undertake the continuous mining program. It can reduce the size of the mine greatly by permitting a minimum of working places; it makes pillar recovery work more efficient from the standpoint of overall cost, amount of coal recovered, and safety. The work force can be reduced materially permitting closer and more efficient supervision. It simplifies maintenance because equipment can be more readily standardized. The trend of the coal market favors the use of continuous mining machines. Although there appears to be a general feeling that continuous mining is still a relatively new program and will be slow in replacing conventional mechanical equipment, the fact is that tremendous strides have been made since the first machines were installed in 1948. This program is advancing at approximately the same rate that mobile loading machines replaced hand loading. From 1948 to 1955 there were approximately 450 continuous mining machines in service. In October 1959, a survey revealed that there were more than 700 continuous mining machines in service. Many operators have expressed a desire to undertake this program, but they feel that they could not do so at this time because of one or more of the following reasons: 1) the thickness of their coal seams, 2) seam characteristics, 3) soft bottoms, 4) bad roof conditions, 5) size consist, 6) insufficient flexibility in machines, 7) difficult ventilation problems, and 8) high maintenance costs. With the realization on coal about the same today as it was in 1948, or slightly less and since coal is still failing to participate to a greater degree in the total energy market, it is not surprising that the coal industry is desperately exploring more economical methods for deep mining. The manufacturers are aware that the coal industry is willing to invest in continuous miners if the equipment is built for maximum flexibility, will produce higher tons per man, and assure long life between overhaul programs. CONTINUOUS MINING MACHINES Before discussing details regarding the selection of a continuous miner, let us have a preview of some of the continuous mining machines which are available to the coal industry today. Jeffrey Manufacturing Co.: The machine shown is the Jeffrey 76 A.M. Colmol. This is their most widely used miner, and has been particularly successful in central Pennsylvania and in high-wall mining in western Kentucky. One of the outstanding features of this auger-type miner is its portability. The entire mining range can be changed from its lowest point to the maximum height without stopping the mining operation. Jeffrey 76 B.M. Colmol: This machine is similar to the 76 A.M. model; however, it is built bigger and stronger for a mining range of 50 1/2 to 72 in. This is the model that is now available (Fig. 2). Jeffrey has added two arms to the top row, omitted the odd arm in the bottom row, thus permitting a 50 pct larger throat opening. This eliminates one

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

SOME eight years ago I became interested to a considerable extent in one of the well-known deposits of sulphury iron ore in New Jersey, and, as a consequence, soon became interested in the subject of the elimination of the sulphur. On investigation I found that no department of pig-iron manufacture had received less attention than that of roasting or calcining ores for the elimination of sulphur, carbonic acid, water, etc. My first devices to eliminate sulphur were naturally in the lime-kiln line, with solid fuel mixed with the ore, in the same way as common lime is burnt with small coal. While this process will succeed tolerably well for carbonates or calcareous ores, even though they contain sulphur as sulphates, I soon found it would not answer for our magnetites, which are very hard and dense, carrying from 2 to 5 per cent. of sulphur as pyrites, and become very sticky as soon as any attempt is made to roast them at a high heat. Some laboratory experiments developed the fact that the nearer the gaseous current surrounding the hot ore approached in composition pure atmospheric air the more rapidly the sulphur was oxidized, while in an atmosphere composed largely of carbonic oxide, carbonic acid, and nitrogen, it seemed almost impossible to reduce the sulphur more than one-half, which was a confirmation of the well-known fact that just one-half of the sulphur in pyrites volatilizes very easily, and that the trouble is mainly to remove the remainder. It was thus apparent that the atmosphere surrounding the ore was of as much importance as the temperature. This led to the trial of a kiln to heat the ore by conduction through the brick. It was divided into ore-chambers, which were surrounded with flues, through which the products of combustion of gaseous fuel passed without coming in contact with the ore. We did not, however, succeed by this arrangement in getting more than a cherry-red heat, which, of course, was too low to accomplish anything. I had at this point become convinced – 1st. The increased service demands on some of the products of the National Mallcable Castings Co. prompted it about eight years ago to investigate the electric furnace, both in America and in Europe. The process had already been sufficiently developed in Europe to lead us to believe that the electric furnace would most nearly meet our requirements. After further investigation and consultation with the highest authorities on the subject, we decided upon the Heroult type as the simplest and most practicable. In 1910, we built a furnace of this type, of 300 Ib. capacity, for experimental purposes, and although it was crudely constructed the quality of the material we were able to make justified the installation of a 6-ton Heroult furnace in 1912. This furnace has three electrodes, 17 in. in diameter, uses three-phase, 60-cycle current, and is equipped with Thury regulators, which give US good regulation and a uniform load on the line even when cold melting. The power factor of the furnace is 04 per cent. Since July, 1912, the furnace has been in continuous operation, producing up to the present time over 20,000 tons of both carbon and alloy steels of varying analyses and of exceptional quality. Both cold-and hot-metal charges have been used, with a power consumption of about 150 kw-hr. per ton in the case of hot-metal charges and from 500 to 600 kw-hr. per ton in the case of cold charges. The electric energy consumed varies according to the final analysis of the steel and the amount of refining required. Too much cannot be said about the refining possibilities of the electric furnace, for no other method of steel manufacture can compete with the electric in this respect. In proper operation lies the whole secret of success. That steel has been made electrically means nothing, for when the furnace is operated under oxidizing conditions the quality is no better than that of open-hearth material; but when properly made, electric steel is as good as

A variation of the longwall retreat system using friction props developed in coal mining is used extract a sedimentary manganese deposit at the San Francisco mine, Autlan, Jalisco, Mex. The Compania Minera Autlan, operating the mine, is partially owned by Bethlehem Steel Co. Roof control problems under a number of mining and strata conditions that defied uniform theoretical approaches led to a variety of experimental approaches that subsequently resulted in practical mining systems. Geologically, the area is one of considerable volcanic activity. The rocks are nearly flat-lying to moderately dipping conglomerate, tuff beds, inter-bedded porphyritic sills and felsitic lava flows. The formations overlying the manganese horizon are badly fractured and vary in thickness from 50 ft at the collar to 1400 ft in the deeper parts of the mine.

SILICOSIS is a term known to almost everyone today. Yet, in spite of a great deal of study, much is still to be learned regarding the disease. Government organizations are still continuing their investigations, begun near Joplin, Mo., 25 years ago. Work is also being done in several universities, as Harvard, Pennsylvania, Rochester, and Toronto, and at least two private organizations, the Air Hygiene Foundation of America, Inc., and the Saranac Laboratories for the Study of Tuberculosis, devote most of their time to this subject. Similar studies have been and are being made in many other countries.

IN THE marketing of mineral products, it is always highly desirable for both the producer and the consumer to be able to discuss things in a common language, and this can only be done if there are standard methods for expressing the properties of the raw materials. Having developed such a form of expression, the next step would be the making of specifications, which may serve as a basis for selecting raw materials. Considering the large number of non-metallic minerals that are used, there are not a few for which there are no standard laboratory tests to be used in determining their properties, or even standard specifications on which grades or market price may be based. Indeed in many cases the consumer simply requests the producer to submit samples, and rejects or accepts them without any explanation. Could the producer know in advance just what the consumer needed, time and money might often be saved. It appears to the writer that it is of the highest importance to devise standard laboratory tests wherever possible, as this enables the consumer to state definitely what he needs, and is of great assistance to the producer. It should also work to reduce misunderstandings and disputes. 'In the case of sands, we find that they show a wide variation in their character, ranging from those that are so coarse as to be of gravelly nature to those that are so fine that they might be classed as silt; and from very clayey ones to those that are practically free from clay. For this wide range of sands, we have a corresponding variety of uses, which are based mainly on the physical properties of the sand, although these are not always very definitely stated. The chemical composition need rarely be considered, if the sand is of siliceous nature. To determine and express these properties there should be standard tests, which are to be followed in all cases where the material is tested in the laboratory.

MUCH discussion has occurred as to the use or uses which might be made after the war of either or both .of the large diameter (24 inch and 20 inch) War Emergency pipe lines built by y the United States Government during the war, to move crude petroleum and refined products such as gasoline and light distillate fuels. Indeed, the disposition and future use of these lines constitutes, in the minds of many people, one of the most important problems of postwar readjustment in the Oil Industry. The two lines, running from points in Texas to the New York-New Jersey-Philadelphia area, were constructed only because of the inability during the war to continue normal ocean tanker movements from the Gulf Coast to the East Coast. Physically they could continue after the war to move crude or refined products, and it appears that lines of such large diameter as these, if operated at or near capacity, could move these liquids at costs per barrel which might be considered in the same general cost range as for tanker movements.1 If, therefore, we were to look forward at the end of the war to a shortage of tankers, it is probable that the continued use of these pipe lines for petroleum movements to the East Coast would be worth considering, as against building new tankers to take over the movement, provided there were no other economic or national defense reasons for restoring tanker fleets and no other better use for the pipe lines. Because of the extensive tanker construction program which has been and still is in progress, and because of our Navy's marked success in combating the submarine problem, it appears to be quite possible, however, that instead of a shortage of tankers at the end of the war, we may have a surplus instead. If this should turn out to be the case, then there would seem to be considerable doubt that these lines would continue to be used for moving petroleum or products to the East Coast at the expense of tying up tankers. It would hardly seem probable that the owner of any such tankers would ship via one of the large lines at the expense of tying up one of its own tankers, unless the pipe line tariff rate charged was lower than the out-of-pocket cost of operating a tanker as against the out-of-pocket cost of keeping it tied up. And considering that a substantial part of the cost of operating a tanker goes on even when it is tied up, it is very difficult to figure out how any pipeline tariff could be established that would be low enough to compete with individually owned tankers that otherwise would be idle. Certainly a pipe line tariff rate high enough to cover direct costs plus even a low rate of depreciation and return on the investment would be far above the out-of-pocket tanker operating costs. In view of these considerations, it has seemed desirable to examine with some care some of the various alternatives that have been suggested as to other possible uses to which these lines might be put. One of these is for transportation of natural gas to the New York-New Jersey Philadelphia area. This Eastern area, located at the destination of these lines, contains the heaviest concentration of population in the United States, and is not now served with natural gas. At the other end of the lines lie the greatest discovered natural gas reserves in the United States, if not in the world, and many

THE handling of native labor is offering an interesting problem that requires diplomacy. It is difficult to induce many of the men to leave their villages and enter into regular work. They do not feel the necessity of manual labor other than to obtain sufficient money to pay the annual hut tax and to buy a little clothing. The ground provides mealies (corn) which means food and beer, he hunts and catches fish, so why work? But gradually, as the native becomes more civilized, his wants increase and his ideas change; he now needs money to supply his desires and eventually he must work more. So in time it is hoped that the labor market will be better supplied.

Ingots of four steels (1045, 1080, Ni-Mo-V, and Ni-Cr-Mo-V) were cast at pressures varying from about 1 to 760 mm of mercury, so as to obtain a range of hydrogen contents in each steel. The susceptibility of these steels to flaking was evaluated by cooling hot-rolled blooms at a range of cooling rates, varying from water quenching to slag cooling, and studying the occurrence of flaking as a function of cooling rate. The steels exhibited differences in susceptibility to flaking, and a tlzreshold value for hydrogen content for each steel was found, below which the susceptibility was very low and above which the susceptibility increased markedly with increasing hydrogen content. Mechanical property evaluations, metallogvaplzic exantinations, and X-my diffraction determinations o,t retained austenite were made on samples from the blooms. A mechanism of flaking which is consistent with the observed behaviors, the effects of hvdrogen content, and the differences in susceptibility among the steels investigated is postulated, based on the results of mechanical property evaluations and metallographic and X-ray diffraction studies. ThE important role of hydrogen as a factor in the occurrence of "flakes" or "hair-line cracks" in steel has now been established by many investigations. These have included investigations by steel producers and forging manufacturers, to whom the prevention of flaking is a very real and serious problem, and many research studies aimed primarily at establishing the mechanism of this behavior Several investigators3 have reported that steels cast at reduced pressures (absolute pressures of about 1 mm) not only are low in hydrogen content but are essentially insensitive to the formation of flakes. These investigations have shown that a general relationship exists between hydrogen content and susceptibility to flaking. The difficulty of obtaining suitable samples of steels of a given composition with the desired range of hydrogen contents, particularly in the relatively large sections in which flaking most commonly occurs, has been the principal obstacle to quantitative evaluations of these relationships. Steels with intermediate hydrogen contents between 1 ppm, and the 4ppm or higher of air-cast steels are generally not available in commercially produced steels. Laboratory procedures, in which the hydrogen is introduced into solid steel samples by heating in a hydrogen atmosphere under pressure, generally involve a limitation in the size of the sample which can be treated, and thus are not representative of the behaviors in large sections. The availability of a facility at the South Chicago Works of U.S. Steel, in which several ingots could be cast from a single heat of steel at total air pressures ranging from 0.25 to 760 mm of Hg, has made it possible to overcome this obstacle and to obtain ingots of a given steel covering the intermediate range of hydrogen contents desired. These ingots, furthermore, are of a size suitable for the production of product with section sizes large enough to be representative of the products in which flaking most commonly occurs in commercial production. In these experiments, this facility was used to study the relationships between hydrogen content and the susceptibility to flaking of four steels, two plain carbon steels at 0.45 and 0.80 pct C and two low-carbon alloy steels representing a medium and a rather high hardenability level. These flaking studies were supplemented by evaluations of mechanical properties and by metallographic studies on samples from the blooms, in order to obtain pertinent information on the factors other than hydrogen content which influence the susceptibilities of these steels to flaking. Based on the results of these tests, a mechanism for the initiation and propagation of the flaking cracks, which is consistent with the observed behaviors, is postulated. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steelmaking and Conversion. To provide material for the investigation, five 29- by 35-in., hot-topped, big-end-up ingots were cast from each of four 80-ton, basic electric-furnace heats of four different steels (a 1045 steel, a 1080 steel, a Ni-Mo-V steel, and a Ni-Cr-Mo-V steel). A double-slag practice was used on all steels and the two plain carbon steels were Si-A1 deoxidized with an addition of 2 lb of A1 per ton, while the Ni-Mo-V and Ni-Cr-Mo-V steels were deoxidized only with silicon and

A SURVEY of the literature on bottom-cast practice gives but scant information as to some of the real facts concerning this most interesting method of steel manufacture, and some of the information available is very misleading.1 An exceptionally good description of this method of pouring or teeming is to be found in an English publication2 on the heterogeneity of steel ingots. Quoting from this paper: (a) With bottom teeming, the metal rises steadily and progressively in the mold with the minimum possible agitation, the main force of the stream coming from the ladle being broken down or retarded by the down gate or runner. Further, the stream of metal from the ladle, under these conditions of casting, is invariably main-tained at a much more continuous rate and is steadier than with top teeming. (b) In view of the facts referred to in (a) it follows that with bottom teeming the metal is not exposed to atmospheric oxidation to anything like the same degree as with top teeming. In this paper it is intended to detail briefly some of the advantages of bottom-cast practice and to discuss the possibilities of iron-oxide control in the basic open-hearth furnace. A description of the type of charge, ingot mold set-up, etc., is found in detail in an earlier paper.3

High-temperature heat contents of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb were measured over the temperature range 400" to 1450°K using a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Smoothed ualues of the thermal properties, H$ - H:9s, have been derived and are tabulated at even temperature intervals. The heats of fusion of the three compounds were determined as, respectively, 5707 *100, 7780 * 100, and 9800 5 3011 cal per g-atorn at the determined melting points of 797" l°, 985" * , and 1330" * 5°K. The calculated entropies of fusion are, respectively, 7.16 0.12, 7.90 * 0.11, and 7.37 * 0.23 cal per deg per g-atotn. The heat capacities increase substantially on tnelting in contrast to the behauior of structurally related germanium and silicon. Deriations from the Kopp-Neumann rule are negative for solid compounds and positive for the liquid phases. Previously obsevrrd "post melting" in InSb is confirmed. The high-temperature thermal properties of 111-V compounds are presently not well-established, despite the technical importance of these semiconducting cbmpounds. Uncertainties in available heats of fusion and heat contents have seriously hampered thermo-chemical evaluations' and thermodynamic analyses of phase equilibria2"" in these systems. This paper reports results of high-temperature heat content investigations of InSb, GaSb, and AlSb measured in the range 400" to 1450°K employing a diphenyl ether drop calorimeter. Similar measurements for InAs and GaAs will be reported in a following publication.~ EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Samples. High-purity samples of the compounds InSb and GaSb were supplied in the form of crushed crystal fragments by Dr. Carl Thurmond of the Bell Telephone Laboratories and in the form of single crystals by Dr. A. Strauss of the M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory. Single-crystal samples of semiconductor-grade AlSb were supplied by Dr. W. P. Allred of the Bell and Howell Research Center. Chemical analyses indicated that all compounds were stoichiometric to *0.1 at. pct, which is within the experimental uncertainties of the analyses. Samples were crushed, weighed, and encapsulated in evacuated, thin-walled, fused silica capsules. The capsules were nearly identical in external shape, 2 cm by 2 cm diam, but varied in weight due to differences in wall thickness. One sample of AlSb was contained in a thin-walled, high-purity alumina cup encapsulated in silica and used for heat content determinations of liquid AlSb. The capsule materials showed no visual evidence of reaction with any of the compounds. The sample and capsule weights are given in Table I. Calorimeter. A Bunsen-type calorimeter, similar in design to a previously described instrument6 but employing diphenyl ether (C6H5)'0 as the calorimetric substance, was used for measurements of heat contents above 300.0°K, the melting point of diphenyl ether. Heat input to the calorimeter caused isothermal melting of diphenyl ether, and the resulting increase in volume was measured by displacement of mercury from the calorimeter into a 200 cm horizontal, calibrated capillary, 1.25 * 0.01 mm diam, or into a weighed beaker. The advantages of diphenyl ether over water have been previously pointed out7 and include: i) an increase by a factor of 3.5 in sensitivity as measured by the ratio of the volume change to the enthalpy change on fusion, ii) the smaller required extrapolation from the melting point to the standard temperature of 298.17"K, and iii) the positive volume change on fusion of diphenyl ether in contrast to the contraction which occurs on fusion of ice. Diphenyl ether was purified by fractional crystallization to 99.95 mol pct as determined from the melting point depression with fraction crystallized. During assembly of the calorimeter, the ether was repeatedly outgassed under high vacuum to remove dissolved air. The calorimeter receiving vessel consisted of an 8-in.-long by 1:-in.-diam copper tube with twelve horizontal 3-in.-diam radiator "fins" for dissipating heat to the surrounding mantle of diphenyl ether. Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. To sum up, the standard method of development now in use at Desloge is as follows: The work is done on a two-shift cycle 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Two men known as development drillers comprise a crew on each shift. These two men arrive at their work about 7:30 to find a round blasted by the previous shift. After scaling down back and walls they proceed to the cleaning operation, using either a Joy loader and shuttle car, a drag hoist mounted on a slide ramp, or an Eimco Finlay to load into a 21/2 ton mine car. Cleaning may take from 2 to 4 hr depending on conditions such as length of round broken, length of haul, and other variables. After fitting up pipe and setting up columns and drills they are ready to drill a round which should measure 9 ft high x 11 ft wide and break from 5 to 7 ft advance. Development work in mines of St. Joseph Lead Co., Southeast Missouri, using trackless loading equipment shows definite advantages: Speed of cleaning, ability to work on steep grades and sharp crosscuts, good later tracking conditions, and possibility of wasting rock in old abandoned stopes. THE Desloge mine is one of a group of mines owned by the St. Joseph Lead Co., in the so-called Lead Belt of Southeast Missouri. It has been operating approximately 40 years producing a daily tonnage ranging from 1600 to 3800, depending on various factors. On an average, the present mine is 300 ft deep with an extreme extent of 2.7 miles by 1.7 miles. Most of the present mining is in the lower horizons of the Bonne Terre dolomite, a fairly soft rock requiring no support except occasional channel iron and roof pins. FOR reasons well known to mining engineers, wet grinding is quite universal in plants having to do with the extraction of metallic values from crude ores. In the processing of the nonmetallic and industrial minerals, dry grinding is the more common method. The crude materials usually contain less moisture than is required for wet grinding and the products usually are marketed in dry form; most of them as powders. To grind wet, therefore, would entail the addition of water and an expense for drying the product, which is not justified. Furthermore, the material would be a dried cake that would still have to be pulverized or disintegrated before use. For producing fine products, air separators have largely replaced the earlier practice of sizing with screens and bolting reels. Mills in which the air-separating feature is an integral part of the design are now commonplace. Mill designs are many and air systems have developed along various lines, but for the purpose of this discussion, only the fundamental idea need be emphasized the idea of using air for sizing and removing pulverized material from a grinding mill. About 20 years ago, when the use of mills equipped with air separation had become common practice, heated air or gas was introduced to such a system for the removal of moisture. The purpose of this discussion is to outline the developments and trends that have followed this experiment. It is an important development, for mills equipped with air separation are now universally used for pulverizing not only nonmetallic and industrial minerals, but a great variety of other materials. All such mills are essentially the same. Dried material is pulverized, removed by an air stream, trapped in a cyclone collector, and relatively clean air from the cyclone is returned through a fan to the mill. There is no theoretical need for a vent from the system. The practical need is to vent the air that leaks into the system, and, since the cyclone is not 100 per cent efficient as a dust collector, this vented air carries some dust with it. The initial attempt. at drying was made on a system like that described, by the addition of a furnace. The minus pressure within the mill draws hot gas from the furnace. Infiltration air, along with the drying gases and evaporated moisture, is vented as before. The first application was made to a mill used for pulverizing coal. The coal contained very little moisture, so very little drying effect was needed for the success of this experiment. Actually, some calculated efficiencies of over 100 per cent were obtained before due allowance was made for the conversion of mill power into useful heat. When moisture is low,, the heat obtained from the conversion of mill power is an appreciable part of that required.
