THE interplanar angles for hcp metals vary with c/a ratio, and therefore must be computed separately for each particular metal or alloy. Manual computation of these angles is laborious and time consuming, and for this reason computer programs have been developed to accomplish this task.1"3 However, these programs have certain disadvantages. For example, they require prior knowledge and understanding of ALGOL or FORTRAN languages. Further, they will not print out specific angles but instead give all angles between given limits—thus program2 prints out a total of 26,649 angles between planes with indices and in the range from (4 4 4) to (4 4 4) for any given c/a ratio. The purpose of this note is to present a simple and inexpensive computer program for accomplishing this task. This program is written in BASIC language4 which does not require any prior knowledge of computer programming, and is ideally suited for nonprofessional programmers. It also provides flexibility for the user by allowing him to select any indices for as many or few planes as desired for any given c/a ratio. THIS paper presents briefly some of the principal results of 3 ½ months field work during the summer of 1938 in the Chichagof mining district, southeastern Alaska. The report is preliminary and presumably will be followed later by a more complete report to be published by the Geological Survey. The paper is concerned principally with the structural geology of a block of steeply dipping graywacke as revealed underground in the Hirst Chichagof and the Chichagoff mines, the two principal mines of the district. The two mines have produced about $16,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The attitude of the graywacke, which is locally cut by dikes and sills of aplite, is remarkably uniform and trends about N. 62° W. The average dip is about 67° SW. The graywacke is cut by large faults, the best known of which are the Hirst and the Chichagof, whose average trends are about N. 30° W. and average dips about 75° SW. The faults at some places split into the bedding of the graywacke and at others are deflected from their normal trends for considerable distances along the bedding. The relative movements along the faults was northwest and up at about 30° for the south-west or hanging-wall sides. The ore bodies are elongate quartz lenses in the faults. Most of the quartz is mineralized but locally large quartz masses are too low grade to be mined. The emplacement of the ore bodies appears to have been structurally controlled in large part by the intersections of the faults with the bedding surfaces. Places where the faults split or are deflected appear to have been particularly favorable places for ore deposition. There has been some post-quartz movements along the faults but it is thought that such movements have not been extensive enough to greatly modify the original positions and shapes of the ore bodies.

INTRODUCTION. IN a previous paper upon the enrichment of mineral veins by later metallic sulphides,† the writer has shown that certain masses of rich ores, such as are found in many mines, either near the water-line or as bonanzas in depth, are of secondary origin, and are due to a leaching of lean ore and the concentration of the material by reaction between the solution and the unaltered ore below. The geological and mineralogical evidence is believed to form an adequate basis for a chemical and physical explanation of the phenomenon. In the present paper the writer will give a brief synopsis of this theory, and will apply it more particularly to deposits of the precious metals, laying special emphasis upon the dependence of such enrichments upon the presence of iron sulphide (as pyrite, etc.) in the primary ore, and upon structural features which control the circulation of the enriching solutions below the water-level. It is believed that many, though not all, of the bonanzas and pay-shoots of rich sulphide ores, especially those carrying gold and silver, which are encountered in ore-deposits, are of such secondary origin. Apparently it is essential that the occurrence and structural relations of such ore-masses should be understood, as the success of the mine is often dependent upon the finding and extraction of these ores. A legitimate deduction, too, is that such ore-deposits decrease in value with depth. As my own studies have been mainly in Montana, my illustrations must be drawn from the ore-deposits of this and adjacent States, with such as I have noted in hurried visits elsewhere. The technological study of the treatment of gold and silver ores has been largely responsible for the phenomenal strides which have marked the progress in this branch of metallurgy during recent years. In no other application of science to industry is system more imperative at every stage; correct formulation of result is only second in importance to efficiency of operation. Progress in method, on the other hand, is mainly due to individua1 initiative aided by the work of technical journals and metallurgical societies. There still remains a field for profitable discussion, and it is my intention to deal with some inconsistencies of expression common to a number of writers on the subject; and also to draw attention to the false impressions created by a statement which may, possibly, be only unintentionally misleading. I also take the opportunity of tracing the source of both metallurgical and economic result; and would question the desirability of the methods usually employed in arriving at a final statement. In the first place, I wish to deal with the question of extraction. This term may mean anything or nothing, and it is often used to mislead. In a report of a mining engineer as to the result of operations subsequent to the remodeling of a treatment plant prominence was given to the statement that the extraction had amounted to 91 per cent. On examination it was found that only a small percentage of the so-called extraction was calculated on actual bullion return, a proportion being figured from the gold left in the zinc boxes, and not recovered. In addition to this, a proportion of the extraction was said to be due to gold in concentrate. As there was no conrcentrating apparatus on the property and as concentration did not form a part of the scheme of treatment the matter was investigated, with the result that the concentrate, of lower gold content that the original ore, was found to be the result of an inegcient pumping system which failed to provide for the whole of the battery product delivered to it. The balance was stacked and, although itself of no marketable value, the gold content was allowed to form a basis of extraction figures. The illustration may be extreme, but it will serve to show to what lengths an engineer may go in the mutilation of the most vital term in metallurgical technology.

JOHNSON, JR., New York.-It seems to me that it ought to be somebody's job to tie these notch tests with the reversed-stress tests, because the thing that causes failures in structures, in a great majority of cases, is where the material is stressed repeatedly up somewhere near the elastic limit, and the repetition of that stress seems to bring about what I suppose you may call a growth of crystals and that eventually develops into a break. It seems to me that it would be of the greatest value if there could be a coordination of the results of a shock test of some kind with the reversed-stress test, so that we could be sure that a material that had shock-test resistance would have reversed-stress resistance. H. F. MOORE,* Urbana, Ill.-The question raised by the speaker concerning the correlation of results from impact tests of notched bars with the results of repeated-stress tests is a very complicated one. Impact on a specimen sends energy into the specimen, and if the specimen absorbs this energy without fracturing there must be developed both stress and elongation. AT THE end of the year 1914, the main North Star incline shaft had reached the 6300-ft. level, and encountered a vein dipping Southwest, or, exactly opposite to the North Star. Subsequent development failed to find the North Star vein continuing beyond this intersection, so the 6300-ft. level proved to be the bottom level of the North. Star vein, and very little ore was found below the 5300-ft. level. The new vein was called No. 1 vein. Development work carried on for the next 10 years discovered a third vein, called No. 2, branching off about 1200-ft. to the east, with a North-south strike and a west dip. No. 1 vein had about 900 ft. of backs above the 6300-ft. level before reaching the boundary line of the property, and No. 2 vein died out about 800 ft. above. During these 10 years, the money spent on development was increased from $54,000 in 1914 to $184,000 in 1924; the ore reserves steadily diminished until it was evident that the mine must close down unless by some means a large tonnage of ore could be developed quickly.

CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, Ill.-Mr. Young was kind enough to' allude to the development of a mine in which I am now engaged. Several months ago the Burlington Railroad decided to open a mine in the field Which they own in Franklin County containing some 15,000 acres .(6070 ha.) of coal, ranging in thickness from 8 to 12 ft. (2 to 3.6 m.). This proposition in itself is attractive to any mining engineer, but with the backing of a large company I saw an opportunity to do some novel work in the construction line, and for several months I have been investigating and working on the problem of developing what I hope will be the largest and best equipped mine in the State of Illinois. The shaft will be sunk at a place where the coal lies at a depth of 600 ft. (182 m.) and conditions both of the surface and of the coal are ideal in every way; the seam is almost level, and we had only 7 ft. (2 m.) of surface clay to go through. We are going to hoist by skips in order to reduce the rope speed. I believe that is a long step in the direction of economy, because we not only double the output of the mine by hoisting the contents of two cars atone time, but we reduce the proportion of dead weight. In our case there will be 20 tons of coal and 18,000 lb. of skip, or 55 per cent. net and 45 per cent. tare. That, of course, necessitates less than half the rope speed for the same tonnage, and we all know that speed means power and power means cost. Skip hoisting permits the use of solid-end gate cars, which is an advantage. The cost of these cars will be in the neighborhood of $250 apiece; They are well built, with roller-bearing wheels of the most up-to-date type, spring draw-bars, and refinements of-that character which are necessary to move the loads most advantageously.

THE object of this note is to report briefly certain results of investigations on the Fe-In phase diagram. BISRA-high purity H-iron and 99.9 pct pure indium were used to prepare the alloys. The experimental techniques consisted of thermal analysis, optical metallography, and X-ray diffraction. A phase diagram based on the present results as well as those reported earlier by the author' is shown in Fig. 1. It is seen that the liquidus points fall on a smooth line which meets the monotectic isotherm at 1470°C. The liquidus extends up to 3.4 at. pct In. The phase boundary separating the two liquidus L1 and L2 is shown dotted. The experimental solidus meets the monotectic isotherm at -0.9 at. pct In. The 6/6 + L2 boundary drops steeply to the 6 + La/y + L2 boundary at -1350°C. In this region, it is impossible to detect satisfactory thermal arrests because of the steep phase boundary. The present diagram shows that indium lowers the temperature of the d/y transforma-tion and raises the temperature of the y/a transfor-mation. The y +d region is found to be very narrow. Indium gives rise to a restricted y field when alloyed with iron. The width of this field is between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. Details of the alloys containing 40 and 50 at. pct In have already been reported by the author' and the transformation temperatures of these alloys are included in Fig. 1. It appeared from optical metallography and X-ray diffraction that the room temperature solubility of indium in a iron is less than 0.28 at. pct since alloys of 0.28 at. pct In and above, slow cooled to room temperature, contained dark etching second phase particles situated both in the matrix and grain boundaries of the a-grains, see Figs. 2 and 3. These particles were identified to be unalloyed indium by X-ray diffraction. The lattice parameter of the a phase reached a maximum of 2.8672A at the indium level of -0.28 at. pct. The present diagram, Fig. 1, is in substantial agreement with that of Stadelmaier and Fiedler' except for certain differences in detail. For example, they found the monotectic composition and temperature to be 7.0 at. pct In and 1443oC, respectively, while the present work indicates them to be 3.4 at. pct In and 1470°C. The 6 + L2/y + L2 transformation is indicated in the present work to occur at -1350°C, whereas Stadelmaier and Fiedler find this to occur at -1320°C. They also claim that the width of the y field is 0.2 at. pct In while the present work shows the width to be between 0.4 and 0.5 at. pct In. 1) Indium, when alloyed with iron, gives rise to a restricted y field, the width being >0.5 at. pct In.

R. C. Gifkins (CSIRO)—In this paper evidence is put forward to support the idea of grain boundary shearing in aluminum at 4.2°K and the phenomenon is explained in terms of a low-temperature "equicohesive temperature". It is stated that these findings show that grain boundary shear cannot be ruled out in any situation by temperature arguments alone. We believe, from our own recent study of "apparent grain boundary sliding'' at temperatures below 0.45 Tm, that it can be ruled out on temperature arguments alone.45 Our experiments were made principally with magnesium and a Ms-A1 alloy ("Magnox A12"). Careful examination of offsets of marker lines or steps at grain boundaries produced by deformation at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) showed many of these to result from curvature over narrow zones along the grain boundaries. A significant residuum did, however, appear as a sharp offset or step. It was found that the mean value of this step rose to a small value during the first 0.5 to 1 pct strain and then remained at this level with further strain. Moreover, exactly the same values were obtained (at the same stress) at 75°C instead of 21°C. That is, in this range of temperature the "apparent sliding" was not temperature-sensitive. At 125°C and above there was sliding which increased with strain and which was temperature-dependent. When this temperature-dependent sliding was used to calculate the sliding to be expected at room temperature, this underestimated the "apparent sliding" by a factor of 104. The conclusion drawn is that the "apparent sliding" consists of shear localized in a zone of a width measured perhaps in microns, whereas it seems that true sliding occurs on the boundary surface.46 A model for such localized shear has been developed in general terms, following a similar model of Urie and Wain.47 Other strong evidence for low-temper- ature sliding has been based on the offsets of marker lines consisting of a substructure seen using the electron microscope to resolve these.48 We have repeated this work and found that the effects can be accounted for in terms of cracks in an oxide film which is produced when the substructure is etched up; these cracks form over zones of shear rather than at actual interfaces. However, in aluminum at room temperature (-0.3 Tm) there is no "apparent sliding" which is optically detectable. We suggest that, when the temperature is much lower (and possibly the rate of strain higher, too), as in the experiments of Chin et al., then aluminum behaves like magnesium at room temperature, and a narrow zone of shear develops to accommodate differences in strain across the grain boundary. Such a zone could well give rise to triple-point cracks. It is hoped to investigate these suggestions further. B. Y. Chin, W. F. Hosford, Jr., and W. A. Backofen (authors' reply)—It is interesting to have Dr. Gif-kin's comments, although it is somewhat difficult to reply in detail without the reference containing the work that he describes. Apparently though, he does find a low-temperature temperature-independent sliding that would seem to be related to the observations reported here. Perhaps some of the difficulty has semantic origins, growing out of the distinction between ('true sliding" and "apparent sliding".

Residual deposits occur both as products of weathering and as products of hydrothermal decay. Products of Weathering That climatic conditions affect greatly both the rate and the results of weathering, is shown in temperate, polar, arid, and tropical regions, each of which will be considered separately. Weathering under Temperate Climates The decomposition of any rock is accomplished by the removal of the more soluble bases, and a concentration of the relatively insoluble oxides of iron, aluminum, and silicon. By reason of its somewhat greater solubility, silica is much more subject to removal than iron and alumina. The two important residual end products of weathering are sands and clays, the former consisting essentially of quartz, and the latter of kaolin and limonite.l When such deposits are formed in situ, the sands and clays are not separated, but remain as mixtures, which can be more or less perfectly separated by treatment with water. In such a separation, the ferric oxide or hydrate tends, by reason of its fine state of division, to remain with the clays and silts rather than the sands. While ferruginous sandstones are everywhere common, they are rarely rich enough in iron to become an ore without secondary concentration. Since the silica of these sandstones is completely crystalline quartz, it is much less liable to removal by solution than are the more soluble forms of partly amorphous chert and jasper, which have been removed on so large a scale from the Lake Superior iron formations.2 Moreover, the iron cement of sandstones, which constitutes the chief iron content of these rocks, is often a result of later infiltration, and not of original sedimentation. EVER since his college days at the University of Iowa, the professional interest of Morris Morgan Leighton has centered on geology, and he now heads the State Geological Survey of Illinois. Just 52 years ago--on Aug. 4, 1887-he was born at Wellman, Iowa. He remained at the State university for his Master's degree, awarded in 1913. A two-year fellowship at the University of Chicago led to a Ph. D. degree, after which Dr. Leighton went out to Seattle as instructor in geology at the University of Washington during 1915-'16. He returned to Iowa as assistant professor of geology at Iowa State Teachers' College for a year, followed by another year at Seattle, after which he returned permanently to the Middle West, first as acting professor of geology at Ohio State and then, from 1919 to 1923, as assistant professor of geology at the University of Illinois and geologist for the Illinois Geological Survey. Of the latter organization he has been chief since 1923, with no present teaching duties. As a result of the successful work of the Survey, notably in non-metallics and in the initiation and stimulation of the recent oil activities in the southern part of the State, it is soon to have a new building with modern laboratory facilities.

In connection with law suits between mining companies at Bingham, Utah, a few years ago, the writer made petrographic studies of more than 1400 rock and mineral samples in thin sections, and also careful studies of their field relations. In petrographic studies, even when an area is studied intensively, attention is commonly centered very largely on the unusual features of special interest, so that the relative abundance of rock types (or minerals or textures) can only be determined by a study of map areas outlined largely by field methods, and cannot be based directly on microscopic work. It is very uncommon, and usually impossible, to take samples at regular short intervals along and across formations. It is precisely because such methods were used at Ringham that the work presents a rare opportunity for determining, on a microscopic basis, the relative abundance of rock types and the continuity of gradations between rock types. At the same time, a study was made of the alteration of sediments under the influence of igneous intrusions, with results that are believed to be of interest and importance. • Sandstone-limestone Gradation The sedimentary rocks of the Bingham district are chiefly sandstones, with some beds of limestone, all now lying with their strike nearly east and their dip nearly north at an angle of about 30°, near the surface. The limestone beds are remarkably irregular in thickness in some places, but usually change very slowly in composition along the strike. However, the most interesting results are obtained from a study of a section across the beds at right angles to the strike. In some places, such sections show the usual alternation of pure sandstone with nearly pure limestone, in the simple manner assumed in most geological discussions.

The early work of Terzaghi1 showed that the true stress state of a rock can be expressed by the principle of effective stress. This principle states that effective stress is equal to total applied stress minus the pore pressure. Since the introduction of this principle, a great effort has been made to measure the pore pressure of rocks so that the true stress state can be determined. For clean, permeable sandstones, it is usually found that the effective stress principle can easily be applied. Direct measurement of the pore pressure is achieved with a hydraulic pressure device and the effective stress state thereby computed. However, for fine-grained rocks which contain large amounts of clay (referred to herein as shales), pore pressure measurements are usually quite difficult because of the adsorptive forces of the clay platelets, which produce negative internal pressures. No suitable device is known for measuring internal pressures of dry shales; the effective stress approach is therefore not feasible and data are usually presented in another form. As an example, data from compressive strength tests are presented as a function of rock wetness, rather than effective confining stress. The work of Belopoloskii2 and Colback and Wiid3 are examples of such data. It was pointed out by Lambe and Whitman4 that a better way must be found to express the effective stress of argillaceous rocks. The information presented herein is an attempt to fill that need. Various authors have been able to measure moderate negative pore pressures (0-240 psi) within rather wet, argillaceous rocks by means of various pore pressure devices. In 1961 Lambe5 resented information which shows that pore pressures in argillaceous rocks are indeed negative ; he presented values of suction pressure as low as - 14 psi. Likewise,

THE yield stress, o of low-carbon steel has been shown to vary with the average grain diameter, d, according to the relation1-3 where o is taken to be the lower yield-point stress Of is the friction stress on an unlocked dislocation, and ky is a constant. The interpretation2,4 of ky in terms of dislocation theory relates this constant to the stress to unlock a source across a grain boundary. cottrel14 predicted that ky would increase with decreasing temperature. This was observed to be the case by Adams and coworkers5 in their investigation of niobium (columbium). However, petch6 and Backofen: both working with low-carbon steel, found ky insensitive to temperature. In his work with high-purity niobium, Johnson' found ky equal to zero. Evansg showed that k, was essentially zero for niobium containing nitrogen in an appreciable concentration range. The present experiments were designed to check this apparent anomaly in the value of ky in another Group V metal. Yield points were determined as a function of grain size at several temperatures for tantalum and a tantalum-tungsten alloy. The material used was double are-melted tantalum and a double are-melted alloy of 90 pct Ta and 10 pct tungsten (by weight), both obtained as unannealed, swaged rod. The impurity content of the materials is given in Table I. The tantalum was annealed at 1325"C. in a vacuum resistance furnace using a tantalum boat. The alloy was similarly annealed at 1660°C. Annealing times varied from 15 min to 2 hr, depending on the desired grain size. Nominal pressure in the furnace was 3 X 10~4 mm of Kg. Metallographic examination showed that the annealing treatment produced grain sizes ranging frorn 0.021 to 0.200 mm in the tantalum, and 0.060 to 0.160 mm in the alloy. Tensile bars were made by centerless grinding the annealed specimen;, and then electropolishing to remove all grinding marks. The specimens were than pulled :it 2 1/2 pct per rnin in an Instron testing machine. The tantalum specimens were tested at 77", 195", and 300°K. The alloy was tested at 300°K only. All specimens exhibited a yield-point phenomenon at all temperatures. Typical load-elongation curves at the three test temperatures are shown in Fig. 1. The lower yield stress is plotted as a function of (grain size) in Figs. 2 and 3 for tantalum and the 90 pct Ta-10 pct W alloy, respectfully. Some unique hydrogeologic issues are inherent in the problems of siting, designing and licensing a mined geologic high-level nuclear waste repository. The problems involve hydrogeologically unfamiliar rocks for which little proven technology has been developed, long containment periods, elevated temperatures, and externally-imposed management constraints. In evaluating the existing national program, it should be recognized that hydrogeology is only one aspect of the total nuclear waste disposal problem, that the use of multiple barriers requires that the hydrogeologic system be considered in its entirety as a total system, and that engineering modifications can improve the isolation capabilities of certain barriers. Important research questions involve the mechanics of transport through dense fractured and unfractured rocks, methods for measuring vertical hydraulic conductivity, and a variety of geochemical questions. Current expectations for "high quality data" from either in situ or laboratory testing are unrealistic, and a modified approach to repository hydrogeology is needed. The dilemma is that the hydrogeological characteristics that make a potential host rock more satisfactory for respository siting are the same characteristics that are difficult to characterize and make the particular site more difficult to license. Finally, evaluation of the containment potential of any candidate site will become meaningful only with detailed underground exploration, mapping and testing in the host rock formations at the repository levels.

Due to the seasonal nature of cash flows from operations, and the relatively low cost of funds this scheme was attractive. The paper describes the agreement with the bank, gives an example of the transactions, and describes other types of gold loans.

MY subject covers the effect that recent metallurgy has had on operations at the Utah-Delaware mine. This mine is the old Highland Boy mine of Bingham Canyon, Utah, one that has now been in operation for about 30 years. It was first operated by Messrs. Weir and Newhouse as a gold mine, under direction of the Highland Boy Gold Mining Co. The ore was oxidized gold ore and it was treated on the property in a cyanidation plant. During the process of development, sulfide ore was found assaying about 5 per cent copper. It proved to be the discovery of what is yet the largest sulfide copper orebody in the State. The first shipment was made in December, 1896. A smelter was built in Salt Lake Valley to treat this ore and not long after the property was sold to the Utah Consolidated Mining Co. From 1900 to 1924, the mine was a large producer of direct-smelting ore which averaged for many years 4.5 per cent. copper, then later dropped to 2 per cent. copper. During the years 1912 to 1920, direct-smelting lead ore was also mined. In 1918'and 1919 ore developments at depth showed a decided increase in silica content and a porphyry sill so closely associated with the ore that it was impossible to mine the ore clean and it was found necessary to build a copper flotation Eoncentrator at Tooele. The mill had a capacity of 1000 tons a day and made a recovery of 90 per cent., and would have been responsible for a continuance of profitable operations had it not been for a slump in the copper market and the necessary high cost of mining ore on the lower levels. RESULTS OF SELECTIVE FLOTATION In 1924 the mine was on the point of a shutdown which had all the earmarks of being permanent; it was being operated at a heavy loss and preparations were made to pull the pumps and salvage the machinery. The plant at Tooele was remodelled for selective flotation by the Inter- national Smelting Co. in order to treat custom ores, and incidentally to clean up a possible 10,000 tons of lead-zinc ore which it was thought possible to get in the Utah-Delaware before shutting the mine down. The blast furnace of the Columbia Steel Corpn., at Ironton, Utah, was put in blast April 30, 1024, and its operation has presented some interesting problems. The coke for the furnace is furnished by 33 Koppers Becker type ovens of 15 tons capacity each. The coal is shipped from the company's mine at Columbia, Utah, which is approximately 123 miles from Ironton, and is probably the highest volatile coal that is being coked for blast furnace use in this country.
