In making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I have tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has more of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 1 1/2 - inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer-is blown with

MANY nonferrous smelting plants have recently adopted natural gas as fuel with resultant economies, both in cost and efficiency of utilization. Not only has this fuel been used for roasting, reduction, sintering, drossing, and smelting, but also for power. All of the three big smelters near Salt Lake City, Utah, have been changed over from coal and oil firing to gas. Among these is the plant of the International Smelting Co., Tooele, an Anaconda subsidiary, smelters of both copper and lead ores. In the roasting division at Tooele are 32 MacDougall six-hearth roasters, each 16 ft. in diameter and 19 ft. high. Two gas burners are installed on each furnace. These burners are of the single-valve, automatic gas-air proportioning type using high-pressure gas at 10 lb.

Standard testing methods are described that are presently used for the selection of grinding equipment. Correlation between laboratory batch grinding tests and pilot plant continuous tests are established by means of particle size distributions and flotation results. Conventional and autogenous grinding circuits are discussed showing the relationships of the controllable circuit parameters.

The hardenability effect of molybdenum has been evaluated by a number of investigators, including one of the present authors.1,2,3,4,6 Considerable discreMncy exists, however, among the results of these various investigators, and two of them, Brophy3 and Kramer,4 have indicated that the apparent hardenability effect of molybdenun would vary, depending upon the other alloying elements in the steels being considered. The results of previous, unpublished work conducted at the Duquesne Works Laboratory of the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation also have indicated significant differences in the hardenability effect of molybdenu~n in nickel and in chromium steels. The present investigation was undertaken in an effort to establish the mechanism governing this difference in the hardenability effect of molybdenum. This work involved both end-quench hardenability and isothermal transformation tests on two series of steels of varying molybdenum content. One steel contained 3 pct nickel and the other 1 pct chromium. It was hoped that such studies would shed further light on the mechanism of this behavior. Materials and Experimental Work MATERIALS The chemical compositions of the steels used in this investigation arc shown in Table 1. These steels were furnished by Battelle Memorial Institutc in the form of 100-lb induction furnace ingots. The top half of each ingot was forged to 1 3/8-in. square billets and then rolled to I-in. round bar stock for isothermal transforma- tion studies. The bottom half of each ingot was forged into approximately 1 1/4-in. rounds for end quench tests. All of the steels were normalized from 1650°F and tempered at 1100°F before nlachming to end quench or isothermal samples. END-QUENCH TESTS standard l-in. diam end-quench tests were made on each of the steels. The test bars were austenitized at 1600°F for 30 min,, quenched in a standard Jominy jig, and hardness surveys were made in all tests. The 95 pct martensite point was deterInined from hardness values5 and cheeked by metallographic examination. The jominy distance values for 95 pct martensite were converted to hardellability values in terms of ideal diameter (Dl), using a revised carve for the relationship between Jominy distance and ideal diameter. This curve was based on the cooling time from the A1 to the bainite nose temperatures rather than on the usual criterion of half-temperature time. The cooling rates as determined by Russell and Williamson9 were used as a basis for this relationship. The derivation of this curve is described in detail in the appendix. ISOTHERMAL TRANSFORMATION STUDIES Samples for the isothermal transformation studies were quarter sectors of 1/16.is-in. thick slices from the 1-in. round bars. All samples were austenitized for a total the of 15 min., transferred rapidly to a lead bath for isothermal transformation, and brine quenched from the lead bath. A time of 3 see was allowed for the sample to come to the temperature of the lead bath, and this time was not included in the isothermal transformation times. Each sample was examined metallo-graphically at a magnification of 100 diam. The per cent transformation was estimated by comparison with standard micrographs, and the values were plotted against the on log/log coordinate paper. At least 4 and as Inany as 10. points were plotted for each steel. A line was drawn through the points for each steel, and the times for 5 pct transformation were obtained from the plot for each steel. Isothermal transformation diagrams in terms of 5 pet total transformation, covering the temperature range of 800 to 1200°F, were determined in this manner for an austenitizing temperature of 1600°F. The times for 5 pct transformation at the bainite nose for austenitizing temperatures of 1800 and 2000°F were also determined in the same manner. These times for 5 pct total transfor-

CHARLES H. FULTON, chairman, presided at the first session of the Mineral Industry Education Division on Wednesday morning. Reporting for the program committee, Edward Steidle, its chairman, pointed out that its function was not to arrange programs for meetings but to plan a program for the Division to follow in the development of its activities. This was appropriately followed by presentation and discussion of his paper, "Basic Trends in Mineral Industries Education," which, being available in printed form, was only presented in oral abstract. Jay A. Carpenter submitted interesting written discussion that was read, in his absence, by A. M. Smith. Most of the morning was devoted to the discussion of the paper, which was too extensive and ranged too widely to attempt to report in much detail. H. T. Mann, H. P. Hammond, Cadwallader Evans, C. H. Fulton, T. T. Read, D. F. McFarland and P. B. Bucky joined in the discussion, Mr. Hammond making a plea for more unification in mineral industry education, saying that in the study he made for the Society for Promotion of Engineering Education about 35 different curricula preparatory to work in the mineral industry were discovered to exist. He felt that most of the needs of the mining industry could he met by men who had had four years of engineering training of good enough basic quality to permit them to advance along special lines. However, there was apparently a growing demand, as reflected by the increasing number of candidates for the Master's degree in engineering, for men with more thorough training in the fundamentals.

Tars paper reviews the industrial trends and changes in educational concepts that have led to the development of the modern petroleum engineering curriculum. A trend toward emphasis on engineering fundamentals is noted. While most universities are committed to the traditional four-year engineering program, it is agreed that more than four years is necessary for academic preparation of the petroleum engineer in all phases of his profession. The author proposes a coordinated program of undergraduate and graduate training that will permit of adherence to the general pattern of the present four-year engineering course, with provision for extension of the program into specialized graduate courses of professional character. In the latter, emphasis may vary with the interests and objectives of the individual student. A specific undergraduate curriculum is proposed in which upward of 80 per cent of the available time is devoted to engineering fundamentals. A broad survey of the professional field is afforded in courses grouped in the third and fourth undergraduate years, but detailed treatment of the professional aspects of petroleum engineering is reserved for the graduate program. INTRODUCTION Of necessity, engineering curricula must ever be changing to reflect the new techniques, the changing concepts that are presented as the engineering industries develop and unfold. Particularly is this true of the younger engineering curricula representing comparatively new and rapidly changing industries such as the petroleum industry. Institutions that planned their petroleum engineering curricula a decade or two ago now find that the petroleum industry has become vastly more technical in its requirements. En¬tirely new methods and techniques have come into vogue and must be given place in the curriculum, and some of these are of a character that demands changing emphasis in the fundamental preparatory subjects. College and university faculties cannot complacently assume that curricula in this field that were considered appropriate 10 or 20 years ago still reflect the needs of the industry that they are designed to serve. If they do, their graduates will be poorly equipped to meet the requirements imposed upon them by a rapidly changing industry. Perhaps it is not too much to expect academic authorities to anticipate the trends of industry and equip their graduates with what they will need to attain leadership 10 or 20 years after graduation. Whether or not this desirable objective is possible, there is no excuse for allowing curricula to fall behind the current needs of industry. DURATION OF CURRICULUM The majority of our engineering schools and colleges still adhere to the four-year curricula and there appears to be a definite sentiment among many engineers engaged in industry that work should be so planned that the engineering student may secure the essential academic preparation for his profession in a terminal four-year program. FEW mining engineers-noted as the profession is for migratory predilections.--can point to as varied a record as Scott Turner, director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and newly elected vice-president of the Institute. His record as printed shows that from the time of his graduation from the Michigan College of Mines in 1904 until he went to the Bureau in 1925, he worked for 21 different companies. Geographically the record is no less imposing, although one reason for this is the fact that he was field engineer for several exploration companies. Virtually every important mining state in the Union is represented in addition to Canada, Alaska, Panama, and several countries each in South America and Europe. In addition to all of the common metals he has mined tin and coal. He opened and operated for five years a group of coal mines in 73" 13' S. Lat., on the Island of Spitzbergen. This was 825 miles north of the Arctic Circle on No Man's Land, where Mr. Turner claimed and maintained pos- session under the American flag of an area of 600 square miles. Incidentally, he was a survivor of the ill-fated Lusitania, sunk by a submarine in May, 1915.

THIS account of a contrivance which has been found serviceable in practice may be of interest to engineers, and' especially to those engaged in hydraulic mining. In that process, one feature which seems at first sight to possess little significance, is highly important in its effects, namely, the regular supply of water to the " giants." The chief condition of this regularity is an even flow in the pipe-line from the penstock to the nozzle. This, of course, requires that the penstock be kept full. Any considerable surplus of water, overflowing at the penstock, is a simple waste, unless it be otherwise utilized in the sluices. At all events, it does not affect the delivery of the nozzles. But a deficiency at the penstock may admit air into the pipe; and this may produce hydraulic recoil, injuring the line by incessant vibrations, giving rise to leaks, and even to blow-outs, and (when a partial vacuum exists at the time of the fracture the collapse of the pipe. An accident of this sort in our main pipe-line, occasioned partly by a settling of the ground and partly by the presence of air in the pipe, led to the employment of the device here described. The line referred to is made of 30-in. pipe, successively reduced to 18 and 15 in. in diameter, for the supply of two giants. By reason of the causes above mentioned, the 30-in. pipe burst more than 1,400 ft. from the penstock, and, despite the air-valve, the 30-in. pipe was collapsed to such a degree that one length of it, next to the penstock, was squeezed together and positively swallowed by the main pipe, through which it traveled for 750 ft., piercing through a short elbow on the way. This remarkable result was undoubtedly the effect of the vacuum suddenly produced when the pipe burst.

No one who knows the conditions of altitude, difficulty of access, shortness of working-season, etc., under which the work of the U. S. Geological Survey in the Rocky Mountains is carried on, can fail to be impressed with the magnitude and accuracy of the results obtained. Yet, in the necessarily brief time given to any one district, maily minor features must remain unregistered. The purpose of this paper is merely to place on record observations, made during nearly eighteen years, of local phenomena in themselves unimportant, which, however, if collated with similar memoranda from neighboring regions, may lead to something of value. The Telluride quadrangle in southwest Colorado is a tract of fifteen geographical minutes on a side, the NW. corner of which is in Long. 108º W., Lat. 38º N. Topographically it is essentially a lofty horseshoe, some of the peaks of which rise more than 14,000 ft. above tide, the interior (with an average altitude of 9000 ft.) being the eastern edge of the rolling Colorado-Utah plateau, and, in its turn, deeply cut by the canons of the San Miguel river and its tributaries. The range-summits are mainly igneous rocks, partly intrusive (such as massive " stocks" and laccolites, left bare by superior erosion), but mostly bedded volcanics of an average vertical thickness of 3500 ft., which change with changing height from andesite to rhyolite. The lowest series of these volcanic rocks, known as the San Juan formation, lies conformably upon the sedimentary San Miguel conglomerate, which dips gently east., and is attributed provisionally to the

TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.

The chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. In the first part of the investigations the reaction rate of the chlorides of sodium or calcium with gas mixtures of SO,-0, or SO ,-O2 ,-SO , was measured. The rate for reactions with gas mixtures SO2-O2 is ThE chloridizing roasting of ores is applied when metal sulfides and oxides are to be converted into soluble or volatile compounds. At present the process is mainly applied to produce nonferrous metals which occur in pyrite cinders in small concentrations. Thereby the nonferrous metals are converted into water-soluble, acid-soluble, or volatile compounds whereas all the iron remains as insoluble oxide. The chlorine required is either obtained from the admixed chlorides of sodium or calcium or added in the gaseous state. The reactions occurring during the roasting process can be divided into two groups: solid-solid reaction and gas-solid reaction. The reactions between solids proceed by means of solid-state diffusion and are therefore of low velocity. The heterogeneous reactions between solids and gases of the roasting atmosphere5 are high-velocity processes and determine the velocity of the chloridizing roasting. These gas-solid reactions shall be the subject of the paper presented. In order to investigate the still little-known processes which occur during the chloridizing roasting 6-' the complex reaction is split into several partial steps. First the reactions of NaCl and CaCl, with gas mixtures of SO2 and 0, have been investigated at temperatures between 500" and 600°C by measuring the weight increase of the samples. The gas mixtures used in this series of experiments had first variable compositions, then the amount of SO 2 had been increased. Furthermore the influence of Fe 2 O3 admixtures upon these reactions, the behavior of pure Fe 2 O3 with the gaseous reactants, and the chlorination of the sulfides of lead, copper, nickel, and zinc have been investigated. FORMATION OF GASEOUS CHLORINE Pyrite cinders are never completely roasted and therefore contain still a small amount of sulfide sulfur. When heated again in air, this sulfur is converted into SO,. Accordingly the formation of chlorine can first be described by the reactions: dependent on the composition of the gas phase. If more than 1 pct SO 3 is added to the roasting gas, the reaction rate is determined only by the concentrations of the SO,. In the second part the reactions between chlorine and metal sulfides are discussed. The rate of formation of gaseous chlorine is higher by me order of magnitude than is the reaction rate between ZnS and chlorine. The reaction rate of NiS and PbS lies considerably below that of ZnS. The conversion rate of both pure Fe 2 O 3 and Fe 2 O 3 containing NaCl or CaCl2 when reacting with SO2-O2, mixtures with and without SO3 portions was measured at temperatures of 500", 550°, and 600°C. The weight increase of pressings was determined by means of a spiral balanceg and the reaction rate calculated therefrom according to Eqs. [ll to [31 and [5] to [7]. The prepared samples were suspended on a platinum filament in a vertically mounted tube of mullite (ID 4 cm, length 110 cm) which could be heated by a resistance tube furnace. The platinum filament was tied to the lower end of the spiral balance. A supremax glass tube (length 70 cm) was mounted gas-tight on top of the reaction tube. The unit was sealed up at its top by a ground-in stopper which was holding the spiral balance with the sample. The spiral balance therefore hung outside the high-temperature region of the furnace. Fig. 2 shows the experimental arrangement schematically. While lowering the sample into the reaction tube pure nitrogen was flowing through the reaction zone providing a protective atmosphere. After the sample had reached the reaction temperature within approximately 1 min, the protective gas was replaced by the sulfur dioxide-oxygen reaction mixture. FLOTATION practice in Idaho is now about 13 years old. The advance has been steady during these 13 years. The operators have been alert to take advantage of the newest developments and they have themselves made a constant effort to improve their work. The metallurgical improvements are clue to the development of (1) better equipment, (2) better reagents, and (3) better understanding and control of the process. During the 8 years which the writer has been in this district, there has been continuous experimentation by several companies to improve the ore dressing by flotation methods. Gravity concentration has fought hard to hold its place, and although it is true that gravity processes have been improved during this period, nevertheless, in several of the important mills of the district the few tables that managed to hang on have finally given way. On the straight-lead ores, tables and jigs are still used; and, due to better classification, their hold on this job has been strengthened.

Processes employing 'controlled at-mospheres in the heat-treatment of metals and alloys are now well established on an industrial scale, and the general principles involved and the advantages to be gained in the use of the technique have received considerable publicity over a period of years. During this time the greatest emphasis has been on the establishment of the process in industry, the main effort being devoted to development work on various types of atmospheres, their useful fields of application and the design of suitable heat-treatment furnaces in which they are to be used. The various types of controlled atmospheres are fairly well standardized, but there still remains a considerable field for the investigation of related problems, in connection with both the gas-generating equipment and the surface chemistry of the heat-treatment of metals, especially in complex controlled atmospheres. This paper describes certain investigations of this nature that were carried out in England up to 1939. The development of processes employing controlled atmospheres has been asso-ciated to a very large extent with the heat-treatment of steels, both because of the major importance of steel in industry and the many diverse and dificult prob-lems of surface chemistry involved when steels of such a wide range of composition are heated in the presence of active gases. Controlled atmospheres such as disso-ciated and burnt ammonia or charcoal gas are used in the heat-treatment of low-carbon and high-carbon steels, but from certain points of view a suitable atmosphere generated by the partial combustion of city gas is to be preferred. Both the ammonia derivatives are comparatively expensive, and even if the burnt ammonia is regenerated, thereby reducing operating costs, the capital expenditure of the gas plant may make it prohibitive for the smaller type of furnace installation. Charcoal-gas generators are not without their operating difficulties especially those associated with the quality of the charcoal, clinker formation and the removal of carbon dust from the generated gas. City gas has the advantage of being comparatively cheap and "on tap" in most if not all industrial centers. The use of raw city gas as a protective atmosphere in the heat-treatment of steels has been described,' but it presents certain difficulties because of its complex composition and its explosive nature when mixed with air. These factors, together with the tendency toward sooting at elevated temperatures, arising mainly from the hydrocarbon gases present, all militate against its use as a protective atmosphere in industrial furnaces. IN the Parkes process of lead refining, after desilverization has been completed by means of the addition of zinc, there remains in the lead from 0.5 to 0.6 pct zinc. At this stage in the refining operations virtually all impurities are reduced to refined lead specifications except zinc and antimony. All excess copper, nickel and cobalt have been removed by the zinc additions. The silver remaining should not exceed 0.1 oz per ton. It then remains only to remove the zinc and antimony in order to produce refined lead. At the Herculaneum plant of the St. Joseph Lead Co., practice formerly was to complete the refining by means of oxidation in a reverberatory furnace. This process consisted of heating the lead to 14000 to 1500°F and allowing it to come in contact with excess air passing over the surface of the lead and periodically agitating the bath of lead with air. This procedure not only resulted in the loss of zinc but of a considerable quantity of lead converted to the oxide in the form of dross and fume. The fume, collected in the baghouse, together with the dross was returned to the blast furnace, thus adding appreciably to the circulating load on the blast furnace and refinery. In addition, operation and maintenance of the reverberatory furnace was expensive and required the performance of disagreeably hot and somewhat hazardous work. The process of dezincing with high vacuum was developed at this plant as a substitute for the oxidation process and finally led to lower operating costs, the practical elimination of dross and fume and the direct production of metallic zinc, which is very suitable for re-use in the desilverization process. Essentially this process consists of subjecting the lead to high vacuum, in a kettle provided with means for heating, a bell-shaped member open at the lower end so constructed that it can be immersed in the molten lead, and means for evacuating the interior of the bell and for sealing an agitator. Metallic zinc is thus produced and collects on the upper cooled part of the bell member. This metallic zinc is periodically removed and re-used in the desilverization process. The process is quite simple. It is conducted at a low temperature, thus permitting the use of iron equipment, and shows a material saving in refining costs over the old method. EQUIPMENT AND ITS USES Dezincing Machine.-The equipment employed in this process consists of a dezincing machine, a steel kettle of 120 tons capacity, a vacuum system and equipment for handling the dezincing machine (Fig I). In certain areas of the New Cornelia pit, considerable secondary blasting is necessary to reduce oversized boulders, formed from primary blasting, to pieces which will pass the 41/2-cu yd dippers on the shovels. Some of the boulders are 'dobied, but when time permits they are blockholed and blasted. In most instances one hole drilled to a depth of 2 to 3 ft and blasted with 1/3 to 1/2 of a stick of powder will break a boulder satisfactorily. Blockholing is normally done by using a jackhammer of the 55-lb class, 1-in. round drill steel, and detachable steel bits, 2-in. gauge when new. A bit change is usually made after the completion of each hole. The use of light drilling equipment in blockholing is desirable, both from the standpoint of safety and ease of doing the work, and when it was seen there was a possibility of using a lighter jackhammer through the use of tungsten-carbide bits and at the same time get at least the same drilling efficiency as with the standard equipment, it was decided to test tungsten-carbide bits. The claims for long life of the bits and footage drilled before resharpening gave hopes of eliminating much of the delay time in changing bits which is unavoidable with the use of steel bits. and thus gain in actual drilling time.

The value of the semi-coke thus produced would doubtless go far toward solving the problem of smoke prevention, and suggests the possibility of the substitution of a smokeless fuel for anthracite and so-called smokeless coals. Whether such coke would have any value as metallurgical coke is a question which cannot be answered for lack of any experimental data in the use of such material. THIS paper presents the design and operation of a frothmeter capable of measuring the frothing characteristics of pine oils and other frothing reagents. The experimental data show that the froth-ability of pine oil is governed by: 1—rate of aeration, 2—time of aeration, 3—height of liquid column, 4—chemical composition of pine oil, 5—pH value of solution, 6—temperature of solution, and 7—concentration of pine oil in solution. The effect of mineral particles on the behavior of froth also was studied, and the results can be found in a separate paper.' The results also show that the relative froth-abilities of pine oils in the frothmeter generally correlate with those in actual flotation, provided that other factors are kept constant. In addition to pine oils, the other well-established flotation frothers were tested, and the results are included. In this paper, compressed air frothing is the frothing process performed by means of purified compressed air, whereas sucked air frothing is the frothing process accomplished by purified air sucked into the glass cylinder by a vacuum system. The term vacuum frothing denotes that froth was formed by degassing of the air-saturated liquid under a closed vacuum system. Apparatus The frothmeter, shown in Fig. 1, is capable of re-producibly measuring the volume and persistence of froth as well as the volume of air bubbles entrapped in the liquid and is capable of being used for compressed air frothing, sucked air frothing, and vacuum frothing. Fig. la shows that for compressed air frothing, the apparatus consists of an airflow regulating system, 1-3; a purifying and drying system, 4-8; a standardized flowmeter to measure the rate of airflow from zero to 500 cc per sec, 9; and a graduated glass cylinder, 13; equipped with an air regulating stopcock, 10; an air chamber, 11; and a fritted glass disk to produce froth, 12. The fritted glass disk, 5 cm in diam and 0.3 cm thick, has an average pore diameter of 85 to 145 microns. The pyrex glass cylinder has a uniform ID of 5.588 cm and an effective height of 63 cm. The inside cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder was calculated to be 24.53 sq cm, or 3.8 sq in. For sucked air frothing, Fig. lb shows that the apparatus for compressed air frothing is used again, with the following modifications: 1—compressed air and its regulating system, 1-3, are eliminated; and 2—a vacuum system, 16, equipped with a vapor trap, 15, and a vacuum manometer, 17, is added. The vacuum system can be either a water aspirator or a laboratory vacuum pump. Any desired rate of airflow can be drawn into the glass cylinder, 13, by adjusting the opening of the air regulating stopcock, 10. The sucked air stream is cleaned by the purifying and drying system, 4-8, before entering the glass cylinder, 13. When this setup is used for vacuum frothing, the air regulating stopcock is closed. The frothmeter has been used for almost 3 years and has proved to give reproducible results, as illustrated in Table I. With a magnifying glass and suitable illumination, the frothmeter also can be used to study the attachment of air bubbles to coarse mineral particles.' Experimental Procedures Except where otherwise stated, the data presented were established by means of the compressed air method. The volume and persistence of froth were recorded respectively at the end of 4 and 6 min of aeration at a constant rate of airflow of 29.3 cc per sec, which is equivalent to 71.6 cc per sq cm per min, or 462.6 cc per sq in. per min. The aqueous solution for each test, containing 1000 cc of distilled water and 19.2 ± 0.5 mg frothing reagent, was adjusted to a pH of 6.9 0.2. The volume of froth is expressed as cubic centimeter per square centimeter and is equivalent to the height of the froth column (the distance between the bottom and the meniscus of the froth). The volume of froth was obtained by multiplying the height of froth by the cross-sectional area of the glass cylinder, 24.53 sq cm. Before each test, the glass cylinder, 13, was cleaned thoroughly with jets of tap water, ethyl alcohol, tap water, cleaning solution, tap water, and finally distilled water.
